THE first public camp sites on Loddon River grazing land have been named.

Five locations between Serpentine and Baringhup have been added to the Department of Environment, Water Land and Planning website amid fears for farm biosecurity and safety.

“They don’t have to tell us they are there. Gates could be left open and farm animals free to roam.

“All the onus is on us and not the Government or the campers.”

Two Loddon River sites are described as being 13km north of Bridgewater, one with parking in Wingfield Lane, and a third 7km south of town.

DEWLP says: “Crown water frontages are a public asset for Victorians’ recreational use and enjoyment. Crown water frontage licences do not provide an exclusive right or use by the licensee, and recreational use by the public is permitted.”

OW, this brings us to one of the greatest exhibitions of country hospitality yet seen in the increasingly longer life of OTF correspondents. Out at Calivil the other day, chatting to the Scotsman painting the hall mural and in drives Jan. Flips the boot open and there ready to devour were some of the most scrumptuous scones ... all washed down with a cup of tea, of course! We hear Jan has been making daily deliveries while the mural is artistically created.

E had Warren of Wedderburn on the phone recently about one of the quiz questions. Warren is a train buff and was quick to point out that our question on the first electric train in Australia may have just had a wrong answer. We headed off

to do some research - we found that Victoria claims the first ... trial that is ... on 6 October, 1918, while New South Wales (them of so-called premier state status) puts up the hand for the first electric train service that commenced running on the Illawarra line in June 1926. We’ll keep red rattling along for other dates but to be sure, the honour for starting the whole thing in the world was Robert Davidson (1804–1894), a Scottish inventor who built the first known electric locomotive in 1837.

WORK TO HOE A working bee at Bridgewater’s former railway

station on Saturday has seen beds prepared for a community garden after replacement sleepers were delivered to the site.

Volunteers spent the day cutting sleepers to size and building more than a dozen garden bed frames. The community hub sourced sleepers after more than 40 were allegedly stolen last month. Police continue to investigate the theft.

15th anniversary being planned PREPARATIONS have started for the 15th anniversary in July of Inglewood and Districts Community Bank.

A community party will be one of the events marking the formation of the local community bank.

Meanwhile, work has started on fencing at the old Bridgewater pioneer cemetery after a

bank grant to Bridgewater Cemetery Trust. The historic cemetery was neglected for many years but the trust is working to improve the amenity and aesthetics of the site.

And the bank has also approved a $35,000 grant to improve the bathroom facilities at the Rheola Pioneers’ Memorial Park Reserve.

No Belgravia penalty LODDON swimming pool manager Belgravia Leisure has escaped contract penalties for erratic opening days during the summer season.

A shire council spokesperson on Monday confirmed there had been no penalties applied under the swimming pool contract.

Belgravia was awarded to contract last September but struggled to recruit lifeguards to fill positions at pools in Inglewood,

Wedderburn, Pyramid Hill, Boort and Mitiamo.

The Melbourne-based company said COVID restrictions and lockdowns last year had hampered staff recruitment and training in early months of its three-year contract to management the five swimming pools.

Complaints were received throughout the season about erratic opening days for Loddon pools. The swimming season

also ended a day earlier than the scheduled Labor Day weekend Monday.

Concern for the future of swimming pools continues with some Mitiamo district residents telling last week’s Kooyoora Women’s Network dinner of their frustration at finding the pool closed and continuing fears in the community for the future of swimming pools.

Loddon Shire has announced it

will begin preparing a combined recreational open space and swimming pool strategy early in the new financial year and council has put future pool maintenance and upgrade funding from government as a key point in its election year priority document.

The Loddon Herald has been told that councillors are keen to see “friends of” groups formed at the pools before next season to better engage communities.

IN BRIEF Quick start plan CONSTRUCTION of a new science block, administration facilities and junior school upgrades at East Loddon P12 College would start next year, said member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan.

Ms Allan visited the school last Thursday after the State Budget included $12.754 million for the works.

“We’re not wasting a second getting these upgrades delivered – East Loddon P12 will attend a briefing session to begin the asset management planning process within two weeks, and architects will be appointed by the end of August, with construction starting in the second half of 2023,” she said.

“It’s so exciting to see East Loddon P-12’s redevelopment coming to life.”

Surge in cases THE Loddon on Tuesday recorded one of its biggest daily jumps in COVID-19 cases.

There were 23 new cases reported in local communities, according to State Government data, seven of the cases were in the Wedderburn district postcode.

The increase takes the number of active cases to 76.

Hall’s walls are awash with history THE walls of Calivil’s 1960s hall have been turned into an artistic panorama of the district’s history.

Scottish artist Shaun Devenney has spent every day for the past three weeks giving colourful life to the cement brick building.

With assistance from Jo Guthrie, the mural charts the district’s journey from European settlement and agricultural life.

The importance of irrigation, dairying and the big wheat crops of the 1930s are to the fore.

Shaun’s latest mural - he has three around Echuca - also shows the Calivil Pipe Band on ANZAC Day, golf, netball, football and lawn bowls and the CWA. The opening of the hall in 1960 is another scene from Calivil’s history given new life on the mural.

Rodeos held in the 1970s and 1980s are captured as is the flood of 2011.

And while history is prominent, part of one wall has been devoted to the future with images of youngsters.

Jo said a local committee formed for the project had raised funds and also received an Inglewood and Districts Community Bank grant, collecting old photographs to plan the mural’s images.

“We’ve also plans to put murals on the senior citizens’ building and at the East Loddon Lions Den,” she said.

Shaun is off to an arts residency in Spain this month before returning to Australia in July when the Calivil community will officially unveil the mural.

A MEETING tonight between Wedderburn SES unit volunteers and regional officials will seek to resolve the impasse after local members rejected the mandate to have a third COVID-19 vaccine.

Farmer hurt ENERGY Safe Victoria is investigating after a farmer, 67, was injured while spraying at Kinypanial on Monday when his equipment touched power lines.

Elegant backdrop and pride as nine debutantes step out

NINE debutantes were presented at Boort District Health’s seventh ball on Friday night.

The ball was a culmination of many training sessions for the girls and their partners.

Organiser Ros Lanyon said: “As with previous deb balls, it is the training, planning sessions, social interaction, dedication and enjoyment that make it a highlight of the year.

“From the concept of the theme, to the creation of the set, it has been a wondrous journey,” she said, Cheryl And Murray Chalmers again patiently taught the 18 young people all the dance steps.

The hall looked splendid decorated in sage green with dried flower arrangements – an elegant back drop for the fabulous evening.

Each debutante and her partner were accompanied by a flower girl or page boy when presented to the representatives of the hospital - Maree Stringer (social support and volunteer coordinator) and Lynette Clarke, Also in the receiving party were Cheryl and Murray Chalmers and the official flower girl Zoey Gooding.

Fire station deal close COUNTRY Fire Authority is finalising a site for the new Serpentine fire station.

The town’s volunteer brigade is currently based in a small shed erected in 1956 in Chapel Street without adequate storage room or meeting facilities.

Serpentine was one of three new stations announced in last year’s State Budget.

The brigade had been advocating over three years for a new station before the 2021 announcement.

A CFA spokesperson said: “CFA are currently in negotiations to finalise acquisition of a suitable parcel of land for construction of the Serpentine fire station, subject to town planning approval.”

The evening’s presentation concluded with the Pride of Erin.

There was a great crowd that came to support the event. All proceeds of the evening went to Boort District Health.

Organisers have thanked Boort District Health for its backing of the debutante ball and Boort Memorial Hall Committee for all its work.

LODDON primary schools have been asked to apply for the chance of receiving one of just 100 seedlings from the Lone Pine at Gallipoli.

Murray Plains MP Peter Walsh said the 100 seedlings from perhaps the most famous tree in the Australian story were being given away by the Friends of Gallipoli in 2023 to help celebrate the centenary of Turkey. He said trees would be allocated to the first schools to apply.

Draft Budget has $7.34 capital expenditure program Loddon Shire Council’s draft 2022/23 Budget (which includes the draft Fees and Charges Schedule) and the draft 2022/23 to 2031/32 Financial Plan, is being advertised for public comment.

Charges Schedule and draft Financial Plan is open until Friday 27 May 2022.

Council will meet to consider any feedback to the draft Budget, Fees and Charges Schedule and Financial Plan at the Council Forum on Tuesday 14 June 2022. It will then consider adoption of these documents at the Ordinary Meeting of Council on Tuesday 28 June 2022.

The draft Budget includes a rate increase of 1.75 per cent – in line with the Victorian Government’s Fair Go Rates System. Council remains debt-free, with no loan repayments, and a continued strong cash position.

There is a capital expenditure program of $7.34 million, which includes $3.4 million towards roads, $350,000 for urban and road drainage, and $426,000 for footpaths.

Additionally, there is a $400,000 allocation for works associated with the Building Asset Management Plan and full funding of Council’s ongoing commitment to community planning of $750,000.

Shire offers business free course

Melanie’s buy into country living FOUR years ago, Melbourne artist Melanie Young was travelling through country Victoria and making a sentimental connection to old gold mining towns.

It was the Tiny Towns Art Trail weekend and Melanie felt right at home seeing other artists displaying their creations.

Buying a home in Melbourne was out of the question.

“Then it occurred to me, I could buy something in the country,” Melanie said.

She wasted no time and arrived in Tarnagulla way ahead of other Melbourne people who have looked to country Victoria since the pandemic gripped and restricted lifestyle options and has also seen Loddon property prices increase 62.5 per cent in the past year.

“Melbourne was too expensive to live in and I wanted to have a better life so I moved to country Victoria four years ago,” she said.

Within two years, she had purchased an old store on the town’s Commercial Road that has become her home and studio gallery.

A CUSTOMER service excellence training course for Loddon businesses will be run next month.

Loddon Shire will run the free Institute of Excellence evening at Pyramid Hill College.

The evening covers understanding why a customer-centric approach will help win in business, effective feedback, online community management and brand reputation protection, how to grow a customer base through reviews and referrals and how to create smart collaborations.

Council said the training on June 8 was being offered faceto-face and would be free for all Loddon Shire businesses.

Melanie says: ”I love fabric as a medium you can touch.

It’s welcoming and people can interact and talk about it.”

From creating women’s clothes from men’s old suits when in Melbourne, Melanie is now inspired by the landscape of the Loddon when crafting wall hangings and other pieces

of art. “I’ve been inspired by the cockatoos in flight at Bridgewater, by the local landscape - the fauna, rocks, the colours at different times of day,” she said.

“The works are improvisation. There is no pattern or plan that I start with ... just an idea.

“With painting you start with a blank canvas and you work with a colour palette whereas with fabric, you work with what you have got.”

Irrigation channel works will take three months GOULBURN Murray Water’s $7 million maintenance and capital works program starts on Monday.

Over the next three months, more than 100 staff will be employed maintaining and desilting channels, remodelling channel banks, repairing and refurbishing structures bridge crossings, drainage culverts and flow regulators and treating weeds.

Infrastructure delivery services general manager Warren Jose said maintaining the channel delivery network was crucial to ensuring the system provided a reliable supply during the irrigation season.

“To ensure the program’s success, we will need to drain sections of the channel network,” he said.

“We cannot guarantee access to water from the channel network for domestic

and stock or irrigation purposes in this period so we have been encouraging our customers to plan for their winter water needs and consider filling their dams and tanks to guarantee a winter water supply.”

Tuesday was the last day to submit water orders to ensure delivery.

“When these channels are dewatered, we are able to treat submerged aquatic weeds which affect water flow, promote silting and cause issues with automatic regulators,” Mr Jose said.

“By treating these noxious weeds, it will help to ensure our channels and infrastructure are properly maintained and safe ahead of the next irrigation season while ensuring a more consistent water supply to customers.”

The irrigation season starts on August 15.

SERPENTINE Hotel is expected to be again pulling beers within weeks.

Owner Raj Sathia said a new leaseholder was currently securing staff to re-open the hotel.

Renovations had been completed “and they are expecting to reopen soon”.

Serpentine Hotel has not traded since early 2020.

Meanwhile, renovation and restoration works continue at Four Posts Hotel at Jarklin following its re-opening in December. The hotel is also acting as a local store and is now a pick-up point for your copy of the Loddon Herald.

Skin checks serious side of fun event

WHEN Loddon residents finish Sunday’s Run for Resilience in Bridgewater, organisers want them to also take a free skin check.

The Active Farmers event, expected to attract hundreds of people from local rural communities, aims to bring country people together for fun and wellbeing.

Organiser Claire Harrison said there was also a good health message for the event and her team had arranged for The Melanoma & Skin Cancer Advocacy Network (MSCAN) with Sydney-based dermatologist Dr Greg Crosland to offer free skin checks.

MSCAN’s Tamara Dawson said: “We know that too many Australians have missed their skin checks during the pandemic.

Thousands of skin cancers have gone undiagnosed, and this is a real worry. Skin cancer is Australia’s national cancer. It affects too many people, particularly those living in rural and regional Australia”.

“A Cancer Australia report noted that there were 3000 fewer surgeries for melanoma in 2020, and that’s just the first year of the pandemic. This means that many people don’t know that they have skin cancer.

“We want to avoid people presenting with more advanced disease, which becomes more difficult to treat.

“We’re encouraging everyone to get to know their own skin, learn how to do a self-skin examination and get suspicious lesions checked by their GP or dermatologist,” Tamara said.

was a fantastic opportunity for students to practice their customer service skills, prepare for their food handlers course, interact with adults from various backgrounds, practice their team work skills and generally contribute to the local community.”

Meanwhile, the college’s Years 9-10 outdoor education class has returned from three days of paddling, fishing and camping along the Murray River from Picnic Point to Echuca. A total of 80km was paddled.

Personal stories of conflict THE acclaimed Shrine of Remembrance touring exhibition Changed Forever: Legacies of Conflict will have one of its few major regional showings in Pyramid Hill.

The full exhibition will be erected in the town’s memorial hall from Monday.

“We are fortunate that our memorial hall can see the full exhibition on display,” said progress association president Andre Bewicke. “Many of the other exhibition locations have only been able to accommodate segments of this powerful exhibition.”

Andre said the progress association and hall committee was delighted to have secured the exhibition that tells stories of migrants who have resettled in Australia from war-torn countries and those of recent veterans of overseas service in the Australian Defence Force.

The exhibition explores the impacts of global and civil conflict in changing lives and shaping contemporary Australia.

Andre said curatorial talks, science and cultural walks would be presented during the exhibition’s five-week showing in Pyramid Hill.

The exhibition covers ADF involvement in Somalia (1992-94), Rwanda (1994), Bougainville, Papua New Guinea (1997-2003), East Timor (1999-2005, 2009), Solomon Islands (2000-2003), Sierra Leone (2000-2003), Afghanistan (2001-21), Iraq (20032009), Syria (since 2014).

Andre and hall committee president Andrew Scott will officially open the Pyramid Hill showing next week when MC will be local resident Adam Caspani, an Iraq veteran.

The two committees have raised funds locally and received a grant from Loddon Shire to host the exhibition.

Optimum window opens for trials SOWING trials will soon be planted by Birchip Cropping Group at Mitiamo, Eastville and Charlton as the optimum window opens for most crops.

The group says its program is well underway with about 30 per cent of the program already in the ground.

Operations Manager Genevieve Clarke said the ideal conditions had given the organisation’s trials program the perfect start.

“The soil is still warm and with the rain we have had we are already seeing some of our canola and early sown wheat at Nullawil out of the ground,” Genevieve said.

“This includes our time of sowing wheat trial which we would normally have to irrigate but the rain came at the right time which was great.

“Our canola is now in, the majority of which is part of the GRDC National Variety Trials located at Hopetoun, Diggora, Charlton and Birchip.

“Our safflower time of sowing trials at

Nullawil and time of sowing pulses at Mitiamo as well as some other trials are also in the ground.”

Further trials will be sown in the next few weeks at Nullawil, Kalkee, Mitiamo, Charlton, Diggora, Walpeup, Quambatook, Balranald, Hopetoun, Merrinee, Ultima, Kaniva, Colbinabbin, Eastville, Curyo, Warne, Watchupga, Birchip and in other areas.

“This week we will move into the optimum sowing window for most crop types which will mean we will have our work cut out for us,” Genevieve said.

“We have two sowing teams and the plan is to sow generally from the more northern sites to the southern sites.

“If, however we have a big dump of rain in the north for example, we will change plans and work around this, just as farmers do.”

The group is sowing about 130 trials this year with research spanning from Balranald to Kaniva from varieties to nutrition, herbicides and agronomics.

SHEEP MARKET MORE lambs were presented at Bendigo on Monday following the dearer trends that emerged in the marketplace last week.

Quality was mixed and inconsistent with many pen lots having a percentage of both good slaughter lambs and some lambs needing more finish.

More buyers were in attendance, however it didn’t translate into stronger bidding as they remained selective and didn’t always operate.

Prices for heavy lambs over 24kg cwt were generally $5 to $15/head cheaper with some of the bigger export lambs easing by up to $25/head.

Light lambs were softer but still received reasonable support from restockers and price corrections were not as harsh.

One pen of heavy export lambs off grain estimated at 36-38kg cwt topped the sale at $266 with the balance of the 30kg cwt plus lambs selling from $203 to $258 in an erratic market to average $236/head at a estimated cost of 700c/kg cwt.

Heavy lambs 26-30kg cwt mostly $190 to $228/head in another varied result that also produced an overall average of close to 700c/kg.

The neater trade weighted lambs were estimated at 720c to 750c/kg cwt, the main run of crossbreds in the 22-24kg cwt range averaging $175/head at 737c/ kg cwt.

Light weight lambs under 20kg cwt mostly $135 to $160 for the better framed types, with store buyers still prepared to support the better-bred lines of late drop spring lambs.

Merino lambs made similar carcass money to plainer crossbred lambs at 670c to 700c/kg cwt or $150 to $193 for the

general run of trade weights. Competition for heavy sheep improved driven-up demand from two main export companies.

Heavy crossbred ewes $195 to $230/ head. Heavy Merino wethers peaked at $226 and ewes at $214/head. General run of trade sheep with frame mostly $130 to $180 and light sheep $80 to $120/head.

Good runs of mutton were costing processors over 600c/kg cwt in a market that was erratic and difficult to follow at times.

Budget boost to grain track maintenance THE site of a Loddon train derailment last July has been visited by the State Government to announce its Budget promise of more funds for rail maintenance.

Ports and Freight Minister Melissa Horne was in Mitiamo on Thursday after the Budget included $181 million to “improve rail freight competitiveness and support the growing freight task that is vital to regional economies and supply chains”.

Workers spent more than two days repairing tracks after a grain train derailment at Mitiamo station last year.

Ms Horne’s announcement said works would be carried out on freight rail corridors across the state, with a focus on western, north-western, and metropolitan corridors, and the Benalla-Oaklands freight line.

The Government said Victorian freight volumes were set to nearly triple by 2051 with about $26 billion of locally produced and manufactured exports passing through Victoria’s commercial ports annually.

“The investment will support V/Line to continue vital maintenance, progressively improving load capacity and line speeds to significant rail freight and grain

“It builds on the Labor Government’s $83 million freight-improvement package introduced two years ago that has seen sleeper replacement, repairs to ballast and renewed level crossing equipment along almost 400km of critical rail freight lines.

“This investment has increased speeds across the rail freight network and expanded the network to support trains with larger freight capacity.

In addition, a further $3.5 million has been allocated to extend the Mode Shift Incentive Scheme (MSIS). The MSIS supports more than 170 freight industry jobs at

intermodal terminals in regional Victoria and removes the equivalent of 28,000 truck trips from the state’s roads every year.

“It also enables rail freight companies to make transport costs competitive with road freight and allows exporters to move their goods to port more efficiently.”

Ms Horne said MSIS was one of many Government initiatives helping move more freight onto rail, including the Port Rail Shuttle Network, on-dock rail at the Port of Melbourne and planning for the Western Interstate Freight Terminal in Truganina.

of nearly 50 per cent of existing interstate freight rail customers, providing access to the hundreds of warehousing and logistics businesses in Melbourne’s outer west.

“Rail freight is critical to generating strong economic growth across Victoria by ensuring our supply chains remain competitive and that hardworking Victorian farmers and producers can get their goods to market more efficiently and at a lower cost,” Ms Horne said. “Freight volumes are set to soar in the coming decade so this maintenance investment will improve load capacity and line speeds, ensuring we have the best track conditions in almost two decades.”

A VEHICLE biosecurity risk assessment has been released to help farmers decide if trucks require a clean down to prevent the introduction of pests and diseases before returning to farms.

Agriculture Victoria grains biosecurity officer Jim Moran said the checklist was produced for grain growers by the Grains Farm Biosecurity Program.

“The Vehicle Biosecurity Risk Assessment Tool is a quick reference guide for assessing a vehicle that has travelled off a property or is not stationed on a property,” Mr Moran said.

He said the checklist gave grain growers a quick assessment strategy to help them determine if a vehicle required a clean down before re-entering their property.

“For example, the checklist suggests key questions to consider when a vehicle either arrives or re- enters, such as: Where has the vehicle been and what is the likelihood it has come into contact with weeds or other pests?” Mr Moran said.

‘The Ghost’ and Dr Webster MONDAY night’s Loddon forum for Mallee candidates has seen hundreds of voters engage with political hopefuls.

Five candidates sat in Loddon Shire Council’s Wedderburn chambers for two hours making their pitch and taking questions on local issues and national policy ahead of the May 21 election.

The Loddon Herald organised forum had both a live and online audience and the event video has since had more than 300 views.

Candidates at the forum were Sophie Baldwin (independent), Claudia Haenel (independent), Chris Lahy (Australia Citizens’ Party), Sam McColl (Greens) and Stuart King (United Australia Party). Labor’s Carole Hart had accepted but had been knocked out by COVID. The Loddon Herald had been unable to contact One Nation candidate Vanessa Atkinson, who has been a described as one of the party’s “ghost candidates”.

She is believed to live in Queensland and there has been no response from the party’s head office to inquiries during the campaign.

Sitting MP Anne Webster declined the forum invitation.

COVID switch LAST week it was Labor’s Mallee candidate Carole Hart taken off the hustings with COVID. On Tuesday, sitting Nationals’ MP Anne Webster announced she had tested postive and will be confined to virtual campaigning for a week.

Housing summit WIN or lose, independent candidate Sophie Baldwin said she would host a Mallee housing summit. to discuss the impacts, needs and potential solutions to the housing crisis in the electorate.

UAP candidate Stuart King wants a 20 per cent income and company tax concession for people living more than 200km from a capital city to incentivise decentralisation and attract workers and industries to the regions.

Booths open PRE-POLLING for the May 21 election opened on Monday at selected Mallee centres including Maryborough.

Local and national issues on agenda TAKING Loddon communities into a child care oasis was a theme at Monday night’s forum as local and national issues were put on the agenda,.

Local options for either co-location with schools or a rebate encouraging businesses to open in the region have been put on the table in the last year.

Independent candidate Sophie Baldwin spoke of the plan for co-location at Wedderburn College. “We need to look at the model,” she told the audience in Loddon Shire chambers and online. “Let get on and get Loddon some day care, it’s desperately needed.”

Greens candidate Sam McColl said his party would invest $19 billion to make child care free and accessible. “Having a local centre is a high priority.”

Chris Lahy (Australian Citizens’ Party) said dramatic investment was needed in child care infrastructure in all council areas.

Stuart King (UAP) said co-location had been shown to work in other areas and was likely the most successful model for smaller communities. He called for innovation by sharing staff between child care centres and schools.

Claudia Haenel (independent) said the solution would be decided by sitting down with local parents.

There was also broad support from all candidates except Mr McColl to council’s proposal for business rebates to establish child care centres.

However, candidates were strong in their backing for investment in rural communities with the Loddon Shire advocating for projects that will lift population and economic growth.

Candidates also addressed the need for greater investment to improve local roads. Ms Baldwin said buckpassing between the three levels of government had

to stop with better roads needed for the $100 billion agricultural industry.

Mr King said the Murray Basin Rail Project had been a failure and had put more freight onto roads.

Mr McColl said the Green’s policy was to invest in good public transport and get cars off roads.

Fernihurst farmer Ken Pattison asked candidates for their stance on the diesel fuel rebate with Mr King saying the UAP policy was to scrap any tax diesel excise while Ms Baldwin said: “Farmers don’t get much help from anywhere so I think it imperative that that diesel rebate continues.”

Mr McColl said the Greens did not support the rebate for big miners.

Mr Pattison also questioned candidates on the future of live sheep exports with Ms Haenel saying negotiations would need to be based on what communities wanted while Mr McColl said the Greens were against live export.

Other candidates at the forum offered support for live sheep exports continuing with Mr King also calling for expanded local processing and Ms Baldwin saying should humane exporting should continue.

Ms Haenel said voters had to ask what sitting member Anne Webster could deliver for the electorate if she was re-elected and the Morrison Government lost power.

AS THE member for Ripon, I know firsthand how neglected and dangerous our roads have become.

Local drivers are being put at risk on unsafe roads while the Premier refuses to fix the mess he’s made in regional Victoria.

In a recent survey I ran, the number one issue identified by Ripon locals was the condition of our roads.

Whether heading to school, work, or medical appointments, living in regional Victoria means spending a lot of time on the road. Neglected roads are unsafe and putting up a 40kmh sign isn’t good enough.

Daniel Andrews must stop ignoring regional communities and come up with a plan to fix our roads.

Our roads have been neglected for years. In 2014 Daniel Andrews decided to axe the Country Roads and Bridges Program.

This program was a partnership between councils and the Victorian Government that ensured maintenance funding was directed where it was needed most.

In Ripon alone, cutting that program has slashed $56 million from local roads budgets.

STATE PERSPECTIVE

Without the Country Roads and Bridges Program, Ripon roads have steadily declined over the last eight years.

While the Premier was more than happy to cut the program, he has no plan to turn things around. Unlike the Andrews Labor Government, a Liberal Nationals Government would reinstate the Country Roads and Bridges Program.

This would be a huge boost for in the eight local government areas I represent.

I have had countless conversations with locals who have shared their frustration at the state of a local route and their fear that someone will get hurt.

Some regular road users are choosing to drive further to avoid notorious potholes.

The word pothole hardly seems fitting when some roads are so badly damaged that an entire section of bitumen is missing.

I have also heard from people who have sustained damage to their car by hitting concealed sections of damaged roads or swerving to avoid them.

With the cost of living the way it is, local families cannot be expected to foot the bill for more fuel or repairs to their vehicles simply because the Victorian Gov-

ernment refuses to act. As country roads crumble, Daniel Andrews is spending eyewatering sums on large infrastructure projects in Melbourne.

These projects, including the Westgate Tunnel and the Metro Rail Tunnel, have been mismanaged by the Andrews Labor Government. They are delayed and over budget.

Every new delay costs the Government money it does not have.

Taxpayers are now left with an estimated $24 billion bill for cost overruns on major transport projects in Melbourne.

This wasted money will mean higher taxes and less money left over to fix regional roads.

I am calling on the Andrews Labor Government to stop ignoring regional Victoria and start delivering safer roads.

Farmers know weed responsibilities, what is council program?

Sir, I just wanted to write to thank you for the fantastic paper you are producing. It is just so great for the community, and gives us all an opportunity to read about things going on that we otherwise may not know about. Like the weekly update from the Loddon Shire Council (April 28).

Unfortunately their piece on “Controlling weeds on private property” has angered me so much that I have blurted out my coffee and ranted at the dogs this morning.

How dare Loddon Shire Council tell the community that they must take “reasonable steps to remove regionally prohibited weeds and to prevent the growth and spread of regionally controlled weeds on their land”.

If they hadn’t noticed, it is the roadsides (that are apparently “actively” controlled by council) that has the problem with weeds.

Threatening farming families by opening the piece with legislative obligations just shows how little Loddon Shire knows about the farming community that they are supposed to represent.

Where staff from council will come and go, Loddon is full of generational farming families that have a huge respect for the land they are custodians of and manage.

By writing in their piece that council

has an annual roadside weed control program it begs the question, where is this program? Can we the community see it?

Can we get data on its success?

What are the most high risk weeds?

What happens if we call customer service to report weeds we identify?

Perhaps instead of writing articles regarding our responsibility - when there would not be a farmer in Loddon not aware of it - they could write about their program, and where we can expect to see the weed control program coming to a road near us soon!

Growlers and relics

WHEN Chas. E. Randell was town clerk of the Borough of Tarnagulla, tenders were for called for the construction of 46½ (more or less) of storm water channel.

Mr. A. Keogh was successful in winning that 1872 tender at £1500/0/0. It was intended to carry the water from the lead at the southern end of Tarnagulla with a pitched culvert, with substantial bridges at intervals from around Wayman Street down to Welsh Street.

The storm water then flowed under Welsh Street onwards through land that has been subjected to mining.

The Sandy Creek is next joined by a small creek that catches the water from the Growlers Hill mining area. Flowing onwards the water passes under the railway line, built 1888, under the bridge in Lytton Street as this was once the main Bendigo to St Arnaud road until more recent times, then on behind the rail station through land that has been dredged onwards past the cemetery where it is joined by another small creek.

The creek becomes nothing much more than a flood plain until it passes the Hard Hills diggings on under Tarnagulla road where it runs into a man made channel down to the Bul a Bul Creek.

This channel was once lined with vertical logs backed by redgum slabs however little remains of this relic which runs alongside the Rheola-Llanelly road down to the Bul a Bul Creek at Irishtown.

Although the Bul a Bul Creek was sometimes refered to as Sandy Creek I have generally not refered to the latter after its point of outlet at Irishtown bridge, Murphy’s Creek.

The Orville Creek is fed by water from the slopes of Mount Moliagul. The water runs down under O’Briens drive, near the old cemetery, then under the Wedderburn-Dunolly road at McIntyre, down through the paddocks under the Dunolly -Orville road before crossing the Rheola -Llanelly road near Quiripel lane.

This creek is joined by another unnamed creek that rises near the old gold rush village of Orville which crosses the Rheola-Llanelly road then on under McDonalds road before joining the Kangderaar Creek.

An unnamed creek roughly follows the Arnold West road from around Allens road down over the Llanelly - Arnold West road before merging with Simpson creek which runs from Corr’s corner over

the McIntyre-Inglewood road, down over the Kingower-Arnold road, on under McCamish and Arnold West roads before it joins the above unnamed stream.

The Simpson Creek then runs under the Rheola-Arnold road on under the Simpson Creek lane around to the Kangderaar Creek.

The floodwaters east of the Arnold West-Inglewood flow down from what is known as Cranes down past Schores Pitt Road or down past Mioline Road over the Dunolly-Inglewood road on towards the Bul a Bul Creek near the old Bul a Bul railway station.

Neither the Dead Log or Magpie Creeks have anything of significant interest however on the north bank of the Bul a Bul Creek, near the Dunolly-Rheola road, there was once a small pile of rocks, this marking the burial site of a woman and her children, they having died from the result of poisoning from drinking the water from the creek, it being contaminated by eucalyptus from the gum leaves.

The North Central CMA protects and enhances the integrity of our catchments, by working in partnership with communities to deliver enduring natural resource management outcomes.

The Project Officer will undertake the planning, delivering, and monitoring of water for the environment with the aim to rehabilitate and maintain high value wetlands and river systems mostly within the Cohuna and Gunbower area, of the North Central CMA region in collaboration with their team.

This is an exciting opportunity for a recent graduate or person with one to two years’ experience to contribute to understanding the condition and response of wetlands and waterways to water for the environment. This position will be instrumental in engaging with the local community and with Traditional Owners to ensure local expertise and knowledge is incorporated in the planning of water for the environment.

The successful applicant will demonstrate a passion for the environment and collaborating with community, with an understanding of ecological and hydrological processes relevant to wetland and river ecology.

Lanyon’s day of cup privilege DAMIEN Lanyon, was the one who took greatest advantage of conditions at Boort on Saturday, winning on 35 stableford points, and claimed this month’s Privilege Cup. Damien managed to finish three clear of a pack of players who tied second on 32.

In the end only two balls could be given out in the ball run though and so it was Kevin Linehan and Jamie Sutton, with the superior finishes to their rounds, that edged out the luckless Alister McDougal and Andrew Kane for them.

As for the nearest the pins, it

was good to see them spread out again with winners being Damien, Andrew, Scott Rollinson and Alister.

This week will be a stroke event.

INGLEWOOD There was a good turnout of golfers on Sunday given that it was also Mother’s Day. A strong performance from the field in what was a par event, with more than half posting scores that were even or beating par.

The best of those scores was Will McIntyre who continued his

great recent form with 3 up, to win from David Patterson with 2 up.

Patto even birdied the 17th, the second hardest hole on the course! Then to rub salt in the wounds of the rest of the field, also won the super pin on the 9th.

Blues cop a Lowe blow

LODDON Valley glamour side Inglewood will likely be without Alex Lowe for this weekend’s encounter against Marong.

Lowe went down injured in the second term against Mitiamo on Saturday.

The ruck rover has been among the Blues’ best in opening rounds, kicking eight goals.

But with his ankle injury still being assessed, Lowe is unlikely to be on the ground this week.

But despite his absence for most of the games against the Superoos, Inglewood came within seconds of knocking off the reigning premiers.

Inglewood had worked to a 11-point lead at the final break after the Darrell Billett-coached Blues blitzed in the third to score 6.2 to 1.3.

The thrilling fourth quarter went for 37 minutes as desperate play by both sides saw constant stoppages, turnovers and changing lead.

With not much more than a

minute to go, Lucas Matthews goaled for the Superoos and saw them take out a five-point win.

It was a massive turnaround though - when the two sides last met, Mitiamo were supreme to the tune of 166 points.

Saturday’s performance by Inglewood was its best of the season and while still to defeat a team higher on the ladder, the Blues in five rounds have established themselves as an emerging quality side in the league.

Jay Reynolds kicked four goals for Mitiamo and Carl Nicholson chipped in with three to be also named the club’s best.

Meanwhile, after coming so close it was finally the turn of Calivil to crack a win. and move up the Loddon Valley ladder when the Demons held Bridgewater goalless in the final term after trailing by less than a kick at earlier breaks.

The two sides are now separated by just 0.2 per cent with Bridgewater well off the pace.

Dogs are sitting ladder pretty PYRAMID Hill was able to record a comfortable victory over Maiden Gully at Mitchell Park, and maintain its unbeaten start to the season.

The thumping victory now also puts the Dogs on top of the ladder.

The opposition fielded a team that was a shadow of its former years but the Dogs were not deterred and rammed home goals on a consistent basis.

Nathan Fitzpatrick would have been happy with the fact the team kept applying pressure,

even with the result decided very early on. Another pleasing aspect would have been the fact 12 players contributed to the scorecard.

Bailey George, in the air and at ground level was at his best and finished with 10 goals. Ed Caburnay, Seb Relouw, Stephen Gunther and Billy Micevski all slotted through three goals, whilst Zac Dingwall in defence, and Ryley Dickens and “Dutchy” Holland were dominant at the stoppages. The reserves games was in many respects an “early replica” of the main clash. A 20-16 to 1-1 drubbing saw nine goalkickers for Pyramid Hill with Rohan Pollock’s eight-goal haul the highlight.

The Bulldogs introduced three new players and they fitted in seamlessly. The attack on the ball and quick transfer from defence to attack was the pattern that was repeated in the senior game.

Late surge seals game BRIDGEWATER has taken top spot on the under 18 football ladder but not without a huge final term effort against East Loddon Rams.

After upsetting Marong the previous week, Bridgewater for three quarters struggled to overcome the Rams.

The Rams were up by 15 points at quarter time, a point at the main break and five points heading into the final term.

Joshua Diss, Mason Hocking and Jye Rassmussen were showing strength and agility against the more favoured Mean Machine, evolution of the Rams’ plan and structure clear to see around the ground.

But Bridgewater’s defence lifted to hold the Rams to a single behind in the frenetic fourth quarter.

Bridgewater also found pathways forward, breaking through for three scoring opportunities that netted two goals and victory by seven points.

Dole, Pidoto and Pickering were among the best for Bridgewater.

Quick response builds match-winning lead BOORT scored the first goal against Wedderburn on Saturday but it would be another two quarters before the Pies matched it on the scoreboard at Donaldson Park.

The Redbacks quickly levelled the score in the first minutes and proceeded to build on their opening score and by the end of the term they had opened up a substantial 26-point lead over the Magpies.

Boort after the promising start were not able to build on that good start as they could only post one more major score for the term that being a result of a 50 for a Redbacks’ undisciplined comment towards the umpire.

The Redbacks suffered a major blow when full forward Ben DeAraugo left the ground.

The second term started the same as the first with the Magpies getting the first major score for the quarter with a goal to Levi Moss.

From the restart the Redbacks’ Tom Campbell marked strongly and kicked truly and the Redbacks were on the road again with the Sherrin entering into their attacking zone on a regular basis and by the quarters end they would post a further five goals.

Moss was again the player to kick the

major score for the Magpies his second for the term.

With the Magpies starting to look down the barrel of a big defeat as they went to half-time 45 points in arrears of the Redbacks, there were serious changes needing to happen in the second half.

With the break over and some changes being made by the Boort coaches in the endeavour to kick a respectable score, things again started well for the Magpies as the players accepted the need for a better commitment.

And with the first two goals of the quarter going their way this looked like it had put a good spark into their line up and they were starting to show that they were very capable of applying pressure and teaming together for the betterment of their team.

The Redbacks were a little rattled by the Magpies change around and it took them until well into the term before they could break through for their first major score and this was a snap by Issac Holt.

Boort dropped their guard a little and this allowed Tom Campbell, who was making a strong contribution to the Redbacks cause, to again mark strongly and score his third goal of the day.

At the final break, the Redbacks had retained their lead of around 40 points,

and this would put them in a good place to take out the game.

Boort’s effort in this term could have had them much closer but a solid second half of the term by the Redbacks prevented this from happening.

In the final quarter under way there was a strong commitment from both sides where both were applying pressure like the game was evenly poised rather than the reasonably large margin that separated the two sides.

The Redbacks had suffered some gameending injuries and they were down to zero on the bench, so all able bodies had to play out the game with no available replacements.

In what was the end of an entertaining game both sides broke even in the scoring department in this final term.

The Redbacks solid first half with Campbell, Rosengren, Guan and Lowry dominating set up their 40-plus points win and this win keeps them in touch with the three sides above them and keeps them a couple of games clear of those positioned outside the top four.

Boort will continue to improve, and they will trouble many sides in the coming weeks and from there with a boost in confidence supporters could see a notable change in the results.

Depth issues “After half time it was a matter of going back to our structure instead of chasing,” Hawker said.

“Yes it was probably as good as our mids especially have been all year.

“It was also great to blood yet another local lad in Alex Cockerell. He certainly didn’t look out of place.

“I think the biggest takeaway is if we play our style we are alright.

Finding a way through their aggressive zone will be something we will focus on.”

After the break, Wedderburn meets top side Donald and Boort takes on Sea Lake Nandaly.

Solid win without key players REDBACKS’ reserves were into stride quickly after the first bounce and controlled each quarter throughout the game against Boort.

With many contributors across all lines, the Redbacks had plenty of players showing form.

Robbie Tonkin and Ryan Butters across the centre found plenty of ball and continually put the Redbacks into attack where Gerald Riley and Chris Hargreaves finished off a lot of good work kicking seven goals between them.

Dylan Caruana up from the juniors and worked hard, found plenty of ball and will be the better for the run.

Jayden Leach continues to mark strongly and often at centre half forward and gives front line forwards plenty of

chances. Cam Steel in the ruck is finding more touch each week and Robert Whyman uses his pace to advantage, tackles strongly and often.

Sam Carroll, Finn Turnbull and Levi Sims defended well and made the Magpie forwards work hard for their kicks.

Boort’s old stager Nathan Gooding still takes plenty of marks and is key to the Magpies’ chances.

Dylan Hatcher and Cam McLaughlin provided support for Gooding.

Overall a good solid win by the Redbacks who were missing key players but will have to put up with that for a while now as injuries are starting to mount in both senior teams.

REDBACKS LOSE KEY FORWARDS

WEDDERBURN has lost spearhead Ben DeAraugo for the season.

The Redbacks’ forward injured his Achilles in the opening quarter of Saturday’s North Central league Loddon Derby against Boort.

“Our first thoughts are that he will miss the remainder of the season,” said coach Sam Barnes.

DeAragugo had kicked nine goals in the opening rounds, including one before leaving Donaldson Park on Saturday.

Adding to the woes, forward Louis Holt came off with an ankle injury early in final quarter and will be assessed this week “Our injury list is longer than most teams would like to have, which is really disappointing for the players involved,” said Barnes.

Among Redbacks still in the injury room is Feeny Medalist Jordan Hargreaves and Barnes says their returns are “still a few weeks off, so the depth of our list will be stretched over the next few matches”.

“They have all put in long pre-seasons for little reward in terms of games with COVID interruptions over the past few years. For those boys to miss out on games during the season is a cruel outcome.”

While Wedderburn won the Loddon Derby by 43 points, Boort played some of its best

Barnes said: “We played our style of footy in the first half and controlled the ball really well.

The forwards presented strongly and were able to convert accurately on the scoreboard.

“Boort made the most of our turnovers and errors in the sec-

ond half and turned the tables on us through their ball movement between the arcs.

“They competed well in the air and got numbers to the contest for ground support. Our structure and pressure really dropped away after half time, which was disappointing, as it gave Boort access to more space and time with the ball.

“We finished the game with no rotations through the bench, so it may have played a part in our poor second half.

“We won’t use that as an excuse, the boys have put in a huge pre-season and finishing games strongly should be a feature of our game.“ Boort coach Andrew Hawker said he thought the Pies had

learnt a lot from the previous week with structural set ups.

“I also thought we were okay in the first but lost our way in the second and went away from some challenges we had put in place,” he said as the Pies sit 1-4 heading into another league general bye this weekend.
