AN EVOCATIVE sculpture honouring district soldiers who served in World War One has been installed outside Serpentine Memorial Hall. For Robert Hooke and Brian Gladman, there are special family links to the new steel sculpture of a soldier, his horse, dog and family and its words “Thank you for our freedom”. THE FIRST STEPS By CHRIS EARL

PARENTS in two Loddon communities could have access to more childcare options from early next year. Business partners Mark Klose and Amy Sturman are preparing compliance documents to open an early years centre in Boort’s Godfrey Street. And Wedderburn College on

Monday received confirmation of a State Government grant of $225,000 over three years to establish a before and after-school care program. “We’re pushing for a February

opening, depending on approvals and are looking for staff,” said Ms Sturman, who trained in childcare in Britain before moving to Boort. “We initially looked at just running family day care in a house but there have already been 12 families inquire about childcare you can only have four children in a family day care house.” Wedderburn College principal Danny Forrest said the successful grant application for outside school hours care was “a great

first step”. “It’s not the end goal but it’s a start,” he said. “We will be offering working parents before and after school care five days a week.” The Wedderburn grant is among 145 school sites sharing in almost $10.7 million to establish a new outside school hours care services at their school from the beginning of 2022. Parents across the Loddon hav e been advocating for improved childcare services since July when the Keep Families Local

campaign was launched and a petition with more than 800 signatures was tabled in State Parliament by Ripon MP Louise Staley. Ms Staley has said she wants solutions for Loddon communities on the table by Christmas. The campaign, supported by the Loddon Herald, highlights the lack of childcare in the region and the impact on rural school parents and staff, businesses and families.
