THE 150th Rheola Charity Carnival celebrations are expected to be put on hold for another year.
Organisers say it is highly likely the traditional Easter gathering will be cancelled for a second consecutive year because of COVID event restrictions. The major community fundraiser for district charity, including Inglewood Districts Health Services, the Rheola carnival may be the latest long-running regional event forced to skip another year. Committee president Peter Mason said: “It’s looking very unlikely that we will be able to hold the carnival this year. “The current restrictions of the (State) Government for events are pretty onerous on volunteers,” he said. “They’ve already defeated bigger places than us and make it impractical for an event like ours to be held.” Mr Mason said Rheola or-

ganisers had reviewed the 19 pages of rules and guidelines required to followed prior to submitting an event application for government approval. “It’s really unlikely that we would get permission, even if we applied,” he said. Rheola’s committee is expected to make a final decision in coming days. The first charity carnival was held at Tyler’s Rush Cricket Ground. in 1871 on Queen Victoria’s Birthday and raised funds for the Inglewood Hospital. Five years later the carnival was moved to its now traditional Easter date. Last year was the first time in history the carnival had been cancelled. Among a slew of events across the Loddon and central Victoria cancelled in coming months are Wedderburn’s Detector Jambouree in March and Bendigo events including Scots Day Out, the Madison and Easter parades.
