FRUSTRATION and concern have emerged after a 10-day wait before a Loddon COVID exposure site was confirmed by the Health Department.

Serpentine Roadhouse was closed last Thursday afternoon and managers erected a sign saying it was a Tier One site.

Roadhouse owners Tasco told the Loddon Herald the company had been directed by the depart-

ment to give no details of exposure.

It wasn’t until late Friday night that the roadhouse was listed as a Tier Two site with two exposure days from early the previous week at multiple times.

Concerned Loddon residents took to social media, frustrated that news of the Serpentine exposure site had not been confirmed earlier, hours after staff had been tested and the roadhouse re-opening that day after a being deep-cleaned.

The Serpentine scare has not been the only concern for Loddon residents in the last week with an exposure site at Lake Meran sending several local families into isolation.

Exposure sites in Kerang have also put residents in home quarantine.

The lag in confirmation of local exposure sites comes as Victoria’s chief health officer Brett Sutton said this week that listing of Tier Two sites would be phased out.

10-DAY GAP BETWEEN EXPOSURE AND CONFIRMATION

Loddon Mayor Neil Beattie said that with cases and exposure sites emerging in central and northern Victoria, residents should take additional care, check-in and become vaccinated.

“Close to 90 per cent of our residents have now had their first vaccination. This has been a tremendous effort and will bring our communities nearer to being able to again enjoy the local lifestyle we cherish,” Cr Beattie said. “The sooner the better for our people and businesses.”

Meanwhile, latest crime statistics show police issued 25 fines in the area in the year ended June 30 for violation of public health orders.

And Sgt Zac Bull said local police had been involved in duties across the state in recent weeks, from the protests in Melbourne to Operation Sentinel on the NSW border and assisting with the hotel quarantine program in Melbourne.

LOCAL SITES DRIVE TESTING DEMAND NEWS of a Loddon exposure site had residents queuing to be tested in Inglewood and Boort on Friday.

Residents did not wait for official government confirmation of the region’s first COVID exposure site this year.

At Inglewood, the queue started forming more than 15 minutes before the official start time of midday where Cheryl Ugle (pictured) was on duty recording details of people arriving for the precautionary swab.

The Serpentine exposure site was only confirmed at 9.50pm Friday, more than 24 hours after the town’s roadhouse was closed for deep cleaning and staff tested.

Daily testing continues to be available at Boort District Health and Inglewood and Districts Health Service. Hundreds of tests have been conducted by the local health services in recent weeks.

FF the air this week went those people who are seemingly attached to their mobile phones 24/7 when all those social media sites again did not connect. Oh, the isolation from not tapping a phone key to catch up on the latest from self-proclaimed and self-professed authorities on law, medicine, news and influencing opinions. We had a few chuckle to us in the street about this on Tuesday morning, wondering if some of the social meltdown moments could lead to better forms of communications and connection. Indeed, one wryly remarked, perhaps pick up the telephone and talk or better still, catch up with a person for a chat - socially distanced, in a park not drinking alcohol, of course in these times of never-ending restrictions. We had to agree with him!

HEN we got back to the office (must try and squeeze another table into the room for a horizontal filing cabinet!), we had a look for some of the funnier contributions appended to social media. One tweeted: “If Facebook is down where will I get medical advice from a man sitting in a truck.” In the same “vein” was “lot of top tier vaccine scientists going to have a tough time with their independent research now that Facebook is down”. Or even more erudite was this one: “With Facebook and Instagram down, everyone is getting a taste of what it was like pre-2000 when the only thing you could do at work was your job.”

OME of our older readers may well ask what are these meme things the younger ones talk about so much these days. A meme is an image, video, piece of text, etc, typically humorous in nature, that is copied and spread rapidly by internet users, often with slight variations.

These graphics or videos can be quite sophisticated but are usually crude and raw - hardly in contention for the Archibald Prize, the portraiture art prize for painting, generally seen as the most prestigious portrait prize in Australia.

It was first awarded in 1921 after the receipt of a bequest from J. F. Archibald, the editor of The Bulletin who died in 1919.

Queensland artist Wayne Malkin claimed that title two years ago when he used the wooden end of the match as a tiny canvas, to create an oil painting of Barry Humphries’ alter ego Dame Edna Everage. The handpainted portrait measures 2.3mm by 2.3 mm or about the same size as the letter U on a 20-cent piece. He didn’t convince the keepers of records, Guinness though. The record keepers described it as “truly amazing” but would not publish the painting as an official record and without that blessing, the debate continues, including Turkish micro-artist, Mesut Kul, who claimed in 2017 that he had painted onto the world’s smallest canvas — a hair.

September rainfall turns out just right RAIN across the Loddon in recent days has given farmers the mid-spring falls needed for crop growth.

Victorian Farmers’ Federation Wedderburn branch president Graeme Nesbit said most areas of the Loddon had received about 50mm in the final days of September and early October. ““It was timely rain ... really good although it was left right until the last minute,” Graeme said.

“The cooler weather conditions are good for pasture growth and it will also give those late-sown crops that had been struggling the chance to catch up.

“This is ideal spring weather across the Loddon, from the northern plains to the southern highlands.”

Graeme said conditions meant that there would not be an early start to harvest this season.

“We’re certainly looking at

“They (weather forecasters) were predicting a wet spring and it look’s like they may have got it right. Rain at this time of year is always a bonus.”

Graeme said the rains may, however, create challenges for haycutters.

Council backs new-look residential subdivision A NINE-LOT residential subdivision has been approved for Inglewood.

Loddon Shire councillors last week backed the staff recommendation for the development in Nixon Street, A 40-lot subdivision had originally been proposed but was

withdrawn after objections from neighbouring landowners.

The revised application had one objection, citing dust from increased traffic, noise and landscape impact.

The land is in a township zone and approval includes removal of some native vegetation.

Schools adapt to year level staggered start YEAR 12 students have started a big six weeks and term four with their General Assessment Test this week.

The final weeks of their secondary education comes as Loddon schools begin a staggered return for students under the Victorian Government’s roadmap out of COVID lockdowns and restrictions.

Wedderburn College principal Danny Forrest said staff had provided additional online support for VCE students during term break.

“Students that have kept on top of their study will track all right,” he said of Year 12 students who have had their VCE years regularly interrupted with extended periods of remote learning.

Mr Forrest said the staggered return for year levels would be managed by schools.

Boort District School principal Lee-Anne Sherwell said students were excited to be returning to

school as were teachers but expressed reservations for the impact of staggered return on student wellbeing.

“Teachers want kids back because it the best way to teach,” she said.

She said parents had been fabulous in the response through every lockdown during the pandemic.

All classes are expected to re-

sume five days week at schools from October 26.

The Government has also announced that air purifiers will be installed in schools while all school staff must have had their first vaccination by October 18.

Mr Forrest said all Year 12 students and 99 per cent of staff at Wedderbun had received their first vaccination. “Everyone is doing their little bit,,” he said.

Vaccine mandate causes stir with business, federal MP THE “vaxed economy” mandate announced by Premier Daniel Andrews continues to attract a mixed reaction across the Loddon.

And local federal MP Anne Webster has launched a petition against the requirement for authorised workers to be fully vaccinated by November 28.

“While vaccination remains the safest and most important means for Australians to protect themselves and their loved ones from COVID-19, I cannot support the Premier’s overreach on Victorians.

Using coercive tactics and the threat of economic insecurity is wrong.” Dr Webster said.

“Mr Andrews has crossed an important line. Where the Victorian government should be encouraging vaccinations, he has begun coercing the public with an

economic exclusion notice,” Dr Webster said this week.

Few occupations have been left out of the vaccination order that also includes CFA volunteers.

Bridgewater Motel owner Helen Geri also spoke out against the vaccination mandate.

A post on the motel’s social media page saying it would accept visitors whether vaccinated or not has since been removed.

The State Government has announced a trial in several regional locations of the “double vaccination” economy, including Buloke and Greater Bendigo, covering hospitality and events.

Further details are to be announced on the trials, including a commitment by the Premier for a second stage later this year.

Town bid on care land LAND has been identified as a potential childcare centre site in Inglewood.

The town’s tourism development committee and neighbourhood house says a block behind the senior citizens’ centre and kindergarten in Grant Street would be the ideal location for a new centre.

Neighbourhood house manager Kim Hanlon said the block, owned by Loddon Shire Council, also faced onto the town’s primary school.

“It would be the perfect location to create a precinct that includes kindergarten and ma-

ternal health,” she said ahead of a meeting planned for the town next Thursday.

Kim said the meeting aimed form an eight-member working group and involve people from Inglewood, Bridgewater and Serpentine in collecting information

to push the case for childcare in the district.

It follows moves since May by a working group in Wedderburn and Ripon MP Louise Staley to find solutions for the shire’s childcare crisis. Less than a handful of places are available in Loddon communities, usually fully booked, and parents have been forced to travel to Bendigo, Kerang and St Arnaud to access care.

A petition calling for the State Government to address the Loddon crisis has been presented to Parliament by Ms Staley.

Kim said the working party

for Inglewood and surrounding districts would aim to engage health and education providers in learning the care needs of staff, local businesses and parents.

“There will be a lot of community consultation to give them a voice and gain the information,” she said.

Kim also said the working group would aim to build on the Loddon Shire feasibility study last year that provided data and options for future childcare in the shire.

“We (Inglewood) are a growing community,” she said.

Market miss for month INGLEWOOD Lions’ monthly market will miss October with COVID restriction uncertainty continuing to stop bookings from stallholders.

Club president Eddie Sydor said stallholders were still reluctant to attend while restrictions were in place and some areas remained in lockdown.

“We’re finding they just don’t want to move around ... people are unsure what is going to happen next,” he said.

“We’re waiting for things to open up so we can resume the market,” Eddie said.

Crime data shows spike in family violence cases FAMILY violence in the Loddon has soared more than 30 per cent, according to Crime Statistics Agency data released last week.

The 30.5 per cent jump for the 12 months to June 2021 saw 137 incidents reported,.

Ripon MP Louise Staley said: “Concerningly, over the reporting period there has been a 12 per cent increase in breaches of family violence orders, up from 82 in 2020 to 92 in 2021.

“Victim reports by the harm caused also demonstrate the high harm caused by family violence on victims.”

Across Loddon, 61.1 per cent of the most serious assaults reported were as a result of family violence.

Ms Staley said that Loddon residents’ safety was yet another casualty of the

State Government’s failed COVID 19 response. Daniel “Andrews has no plan to get worsening crime in Loddon under control,” she said. “(The data) confirms Loddon residents’ worst fears that Labor’s lockdowns have driven family violence to record highs.

“Labor’s failed COVID-19 response has taken family violence from bad to worse.

“We desperately need a new plan to reverse this trend.

“Daniel Andrews must act now to protect vulnerable Victorians from family violence and other heinous crimes,” Ms Staley said.

Data also showed an increase in drug offences for the period rising from 11 to 18 offences, property and deception offences rising from 177 to 190 and crimes against the person steady at 82.

Pink tinges are everywhere LODDON towns are turning pink this month as communities raise awareness of breast cancer charity McGrath Foundation.

Inglewood and Districts Health Service’s Cindy Gould said Pink Up Your Town banners and displays were also a reminder for people to have breast checks.

“Over the last 18 months with COVID restrictions, people may have overlooked having their regular check,” Cindy said.

Free breast screen checks are available for woman aged between 50 and 74 and should be taken every two years.

She said: “IDHS is again promoting Pink Up Your Town Loddon, an incredible initiative run through the McGrath Foundation in which communities come together to ‘pink up’ – not only to raise funds that support specialist McGrath Breast Care Nurses, but to create a visual show of support for local families experiencing breast cancer.”

While current COVID restrictions mean fundraising activities normally held in Loddon communities for PUYT are on hold, Cindy said support from local organisations and businesses was helping create a visible message this month.

Responsible pet ownership Every dog and cat over the age of three months must be registered with Council.

Existing registrations must be renewed by 10 April each year.

Dogs and cats being registered for the first time with Council are required to provide evidence that they have a microchip.

AN EPPING man has had his licence suspended after being caught travelling at 156kmh on the Wimmera Highway at Murphy’s Creek last week.

Police said the 22-year-old male from Epping was stopped after drawing police attention on the radar in the 100kmh zone.

Then man was issued an infringement notice suspending his licence for 12 months and ‘copping’ a $909 fine.

Roving Loddon Police patrols located a 50-year-old male from Strathfieldsaye travelling at speed on Thursday.

The man was detected doing 118kmh in the 100kmh zone on the Calder Highway, Wedderburn, before further checks also revealed him driving an unregistered vehicle.

He was issued with two penalty notices totalling $1272.

Not long after, a 27-year-old man from Norlane was stopped for speeding on the Bridgewater-Serpentine Road at Salisbury West at 117kmh in the 100kmh zone.

Further checks by Loddon police revealed the man to be driving while disqualified, in his employer’s vehicle, with two other fully licensed passengers alongside him!

Local police are investigating an incident between Wednesday and Sunday when unknown offender/s damaged a new 35,000-litre tank located at the Wedderburn Transfer Station.

Loddon Police are also investigating a burnt out vehicle on the Loddon Valley Highway, Yarraberb.

The vehicle had broken down and was in the process of being collected when it had been set alight overnight on September 13 between 10pm and 6am. Estimated value of damage is $10000.

It rained on their protest A HANDFUL of animal rights activists dodged rain on Friday as they protested plans for a kangaroo pet meat processing plant.

Organisers Glynn Jarrett and Michelle Mead were joined by four other Plea for Kindness Rally protesters to wave posters in Wedderburn’s main street, including outside the shire offices, before travelling to the proposed plant site at Inglewood Police patrolled High Street Wedderburn during the protest and checked the residency of protesters.

Mr Jarrett, a City of Greater Bendigo officer and former Animal Justice Party state election candidate, claimed there would be a stigma attached to the region if the plant employing 10 people went ahead.

“I lot of people come here for nature-based tourism,” Mr Jarrett said.

He said that while Loddon communities might have a different culture to that of campaigners for kangaroos, he hoped people would listen to protester arguments.

However, Mr Jarrett said he was not trying to impose a different culture on local towns.

Ms Mead said she had grown up in Korong Vale before leaving for study and employment.

She said her love of wildlife, kangaroo numbers and the targeting of alpha male kangaroos were driving her opposition to the permit application by Campaspe Meats.

“The creation of 10 jobs (processing kangaroos) is shortsighted,” she said. “Inglewood is perfect for ecotourism and tourism creates jobs.”

“Does Inglewood want to be known as a slaughterhouse for kangaroo. There are other options out there instead of killing kangaroos.”

Wendy James, a Ballarat animal activist, claimed the proposal would detract from town but “as a rule I directly don’t spend a lot of time around town”.

During their 30-minute protest at Wedderburn, only one car horn toot of support was heard.

And a group of locals in Inglewood, watching the main protest vehicle drive down Brooke Street to the abattoir at lunchtime, in chorus said the kangaroo meat processing plant would be good for the town.

On his death, sons Arthur and John Buchanan took control of the factories. G Munro & Co, Ballarat and Charlton won the public trial of reapers, binder, strippers and winnowers, held on the farm of JT Procter and H Bracken at Barrakee, on December 8, 1885, the well known and long established firm of Jos. Nicholson & Co., of Melbourne, being runner up.

The trustees of Munro & Co., Charlton were awarded first prize for their winnower. They were soon exhibiting their machinery at the Ballarat, Wimmera, Horsham, Talbot, Clunes and Ararat shows along with Charlton, winning prizes for their winnowing machine October 1884, Thomas Hendersons & Co., of Melbourne, being the runner up, first for their broadcast sower for grain, second

winnower, second horseworks, second chaffcutter and harrows 1886.

G Munro & Co., were awarded eight prizes at the September 1887 show for their grubbing machine, double furrow plough, winnowing machine, chaffcutter for horseworks, set of horseworks, harrows, cultivator and stripper whilst in September 1888 first prize for single horse buggy, and in 1889 these items were recommended for special prizes, truck waggon, set of bullock waggon wheels and bullock yokes.

It would appear that Alfred Dabron arrived in Charlton around early 1887, he taking employment at the foundry.

On August 1, 1887 Alexander Buchanan Munro, late manager of the Charlton branch, and his brother John purchased the agricultural, machine and implement makers, business from the estate of their late father George Munro. Alexander B Munro was to manage the Ballarat factory at Alfredton, whilst the Charlton branch was to be managed by long time employee James Forbes. The Charlton

factory was also recorded as Munro Implement Works in January 1892. The machinery, plant, tools and stock of the Alfredton factory were disposed of by auction in 1893 whilst around the same time the freehold buildings, machinery and plant of the Charlton branch was sold to Jas. Forbes & Co., trading as The Charlton Foundry Co. for £1500, it to concentrate on manufacturing winnowers, reapers, chaff cutters, strippers, ploughs and horse works however it was not long before the foundry was busy building waggons, Premier harvesters, ploughs and water carts, these being in great demand throughout the Commonwealth, the power for the foundry being supplied by an 8 hp steam engine.

The foundry won a medal for its farm wagon in September 1894. James Forbes, William John Bennett, Alfred Dabron and William Buchanan, trading as The Charlton Foundry Co. applied for a patent for improvements in and relating to the damp weather drum and tooth concave of strippers - September 1895, it being granted No. 12539 in July 1896.

A wind storm tore through Charlton it doing considerable damage by unroofing many buildings including the foundry in 1897.

Both Bennett and Buchanan had retired from the partnership by September 25, 1901 when Forbes and Dabron applied for a patent for improvements in and relating to the grain cleaning and threshing appliances for harvesters and winnowers, No. 18527, NSW No 11463, October 1902.

James Forbes, blacksmith, and Alfred Dabron, wheelwright, trading as the Charlton Foundry Company, dissolved their partnership on March 30, 1905, when Dabron purchased the interests of his partner.

Dabron had formed a partnership with John Biender by late September 1908, when they applying for a patent for an improved eccentric connecting rod, they continuing to conduct the business as the Charlton Foundry Company.

A notice appeared in The Age on March 9, 1928 with the business was listed as coachbuilders, agricultural implement and machinery makers.

I could not find any further news reports on the foundry but in its latter years repairs and maintenance work was undertaken until it finally closed in 1964.

GEORGE Munro established his blacksmith in Sturt Street Ballarat, described as a little above the botanical gardens, during 1870.

It was here that Munro concentrated on repairing mining machinery and brass castings until 1875 when he expanded into manufacturing agricultural machinery. It was also during 1875 that Munro opened a foundry at the corner of Learmonth and High streets, Charlton.

The Ballarat factory soon covered 1.5 acres of land, it employing around sixty hands, Munro selling his strippers, reapers and reaper mower machinery as far afield as Horsham, Benalla and Echuca.

The Ballarat factory had a steam hammer, three drilling machines, three selfacting screw- cutting lathes, and one large self-acting boring machine. A number of these machines were made on the premises.

Among the machinery there was also a boring machine, made on the premises, which was capable of drilling a bore from 1/2 inch to three feet and take in a body 5 feet high and 6 feet thick; and an American screw-cutting machine with a revolving disc, by the use of which there is no necessity of changing the dies which could be varied from 5/16 to 2 inches.

The moulding room was provided with a travelling crane, which could lift 5 tons. Mr Monro cast cylinders over a ton in weight.

The moulding fan for the blast furnaces was worked by a double cylinder engine which was also made on the premises.

The machinery was driven by a 20-horsepower engine, made by Walker Hickman, and Co., and the work done sufficient to keep nine forges employed, Munro was awarded first prize for a double furrow plough at the St. Arnaud Pastoral & Agricultural show in 1879.

Gilbert McGlashan, formerly of Learmonth, near Ballarat, and Melbourne, who had established his St Arnaud Foundry, blacksmith and implements works, North Western Road, opposite the entrance gates to the hospital, by July 16, 1880, was involved with George Munro, as they applied for a patent for a stripper on February 8, 1881, they being given No. 2960, however it was not until 1882 that McGlashan released his first stripper.

Little is known about the Charlton foundry except that Munro exhibited a range of his implements at the Charlton and Lower Avoca Pastoral and Agricultural Society shows where he won many

FEATURES FLOWERS OF OUR SPRING words and pictures by robert scholes SPRING is the wildflower season in the bushlands of the Inglewood/Kooyoora region of the Loddon Shire.

There is an almost unbroken stretch of forests running in an arch from north of Inglewood through to Kingower across to Wehla and south of Moliagul, The area consists of a range of nature conservation reserves, state park and state forest blocks.

It includes a wide range of forest and ecosystems types, containing a sometimes much underestimated diversity of flora and fauna. As spring progresses the bush is constantly changing.

In early spring we saw the bush dominated by the yellow of the many different local species of wattle blooms that come and go, followed by massive displays of the white of the Cypress Daisy bush as it flowers and dominates the landscape in some areas of the box/ironbark forests around Kingower. October is one of more interesting times to be out exploring this region as many of the smaller early spring flower species can still be found and the late spring flowering ones are beginning to emerge.

Up to 50 different species of orchids may be found across this region during this period along with a host of daisies, lilies, bluebells and numerous other flowering species.

The Friends of Kooyoora is a volunteer group which supports the various Land Management agencies across this area and conducts a range of conservation, educational and public awareness activities, tours and projects. Luke leads VFF team LUKE Hooke has been appointed the new general manager policy for Victorian Farmers’ Federation.

The appointment follows roles with the state’s peak farming body that have included stakeholder, policy and advocacy manager and acting chief executive officer early this year.

Luke worked as a farmhand over 10 years on the family’s Willera stud at Serpentine and has been an adviser to federal and state MPs, including Murray Plains MP and Nationals leader Peter Walsh.

He has experience in policy development and issues management in the water, climate, environment, animal welfare policy areas.

Luke holds a Bachelor of Laws/ International Relations, a Graduate Diploma in Professional Political Practice He is a member of the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria’s Youth Advisory Committee and a CFA volunteer.

His focus leading the VFF policy team is on ensuring a rigorous and inclusive policy development process and ensuring VFF advocacy is effecting change.

State dominates share of nation dairy exports A NEW report says Victoria’s dairy farmers experienced the best financial returns in more than six years as the sector continues to innovate and excel.

Minister for Agriculture Mary-Anne Thomas released the 2020-21 Dairy Farm Monitor report last week.

Agriculture Victoria’s Dairy Farm Monitor project is a collaboration with Dairy Australia to provide critical insight for industry into how the sector is tracking.

The annual report is a comprehensive financial and production analysis of 80 Victorian dairy farm businesses in south-western Victoria, Gipp-

sland and northern Victoria.

The quality benchmarking data in the report gives Victorian dairy farmers the ability to make comparisons and identify areas they could change to improve the productivity, profitability and sustainability of their businesses.

While average dairy farm profits were up across most of the state, dairy farmers in Victoria’s north posted the best results, taking advantage of favourable seasonal conditions to record the highest profits this region has seen for 15 years.

Since the last report, farm cashflows have increased from the previous year, with 94 per

cent of farms recording a positive return.

This financial rebound has enabled farmers to invest back into their businesses by repairing and upgrading infrastructure and machinery and improving pastures.

Victoria is a leading contributor to Australia’s dairy industry, accounting for 77 per cent of Australia’s dairy exports valued at $2.1 billion.

The gross value of milk produced in Victoria is worth $2.7 billion (2018-19). The sector supports almost 10,000 jobs with more than half of these workers located in regional Victoria.

SHEEP THERE was a big cut to numbers following extensive rain, with just 11,000 lambs and 4500 sheep at Bendigo on Monday.

Young lamb quality was still reasonable, although the yarding didn’t have the weight or polish of recent markets.

COVID-19 is in the news again, and three Victorian processing companies were affected and didn’t operate.

The market opened softly but gained momentum to close on a high with pens of trade weight lambs estimated at 1000c/kg cwt again late in the auction.

The overall price trend was firm to cheaper over the heavy classes of young lambs compared to a week ago, while medium, light and store lambs were dearer.

Some young lambs to the paddock lifted by up $20/head.

Most weights and grades of young lambs still recorded solid price averages of between 930c to 970c/kg cwt.

A few pens of heavy export young lambs sold from $290 to a top of $310, while old lambs with weight topped at $340/head.

Most of the lead pens of young lambs sold in a range of $240 to $280/head.

The average for the main run of fat score 3 and 4 crossbred lambs in the 24kg to 26kg cwt category was $250, while the 22kg to 24kg pens averaged $239/head.

Ballarat restockers increased their spend to a top of $237 for trade lambs to shear, while the more genuine sized store lambs lifted in value to between $170 to $193/head. Very small young lambs $130 to $155/head.

Heavy mutton was dearer, with big crossbred ewes from $230 to $270 on limited numbers and Merinos from $200 to $230/head.

The general run of trade and light sheep, however, showed a softer trend compared to last week at an estimated 600c to 650c/kg cwt.

Park cabins get a tick NEW cabins at Boort Lakes Holiday Park have been quickly filled with visiting seasonal workers and tourists.

Owner Wendy James said 12 of the 16 cabins have been installed as part of the park upgrade.

Wendy said the final four new cabins were expected to arrive on site within the next and a start made on connecting services.

“The feedback has been really good and they are in constant use by workers and were also very popular on the AFL long weekend,” she said.

“As soon as these new cabins were built, we had agriculture workers ready to book in

and they have enjoyed staying close to their workplaces in and around Boort.”

The upgrade received a $500,000 Government grant.

Boundary Bend Olives received $62,000 to build 12 new caravan sites with toilet and shower facilities for its temporary on-farm caravan park, which workers benefitted from during this year’s olive harvest.

Member for Northern Victoria Region Mark Gepp said: “The positive, progressive nature of this sort of development attracts further investment and brings confidence to the town and the surrounding communities.”

ter Mary-Anne Thomas made a second visit to Boort this year.

The minister had made the funding announcement and returned for what the Government said was an unveiling of the project. Neither local council nor the media were invited to attend the ministerial visits.

In a media release issued following her visit, Ms Thomas said: ““It’s fantastic to see the progress Wendy has made in growing accommodation options for Boort and the wider region – supporting agriculture businesses in her community to access the workforce they need.”

“We know how important it is for farmers to have suitable ac-

commodation options for their workers – locally and on-farm – to make it easier for them to recruit workers for the harvest season.

“Access to accommodation is a common barrier that prevents people taking a job in agriculture. These investments in locally-led solutions will have a positive flow on effect for the entire community.”

The 16 new cabins and six ensuites for existing caravan sites, will provide accommodation for up to 77 workers to support the region’s agriculture industry.

The development is part of the Seasonal Workforce Accommodation Program.

Pantry, op-shop remain closed HELPING Hands Mission say its goal is to continue operation of the op-shop and community pantry at Bridgewater.

Chief executive officer Melanie Kent said all mission sites in Victorian had been since lockdowns earlier this year.

“We are working towards solutions at Bridgewater,” Melanie said. She said with facilities closed in Melbourne, it had not been possible to open the local op-shop.

Meanwhile, community donations of pantry items have been left at the town’s former railway station on several occasions recently.

Kane finishes in strong form BOORT Golf Club wrapped up the 2021 season with a parthree event on Saturday.

Eleven golfers contested the where handicaps were not used directly for scoring, but higher handicapped golfers hit from tees close to the hole, while lower handicapped golfers hit from further back.

Stroke scores were then converted into stableford points.

In the end, recent rain and extra growth proved to be a chal-

lenge for all, with club champion Andrew Kane turning in the best score of the day with 29 points from the back marks.

Tim Lanyon and Stuart Tweddle then rounded out the top three on 25 and 22 respectively.

Nearest the pins were also up for grabs on every hole, with Doug Couper and Andrew claiming two each, while Scott Rollinson, Ray Taylor, Alister McDougal, Kevin Linehan and Jamie Sutton won one each.

Jamie was the only player of the day to hit a tee shot onto a green, while Stuart’s chip in on the third was the only two of the day.

The men’s major trophy presentation was then held, with Andrew taking home the A Grade championship, Damien Lanyon the B Grade championship, Shayne Morris the Weaver Cup, Doug Couper the singles’ knockout, Stuart Tweddle the

Wimmera-Mallee trophy for the three best stableford scores of the year.

Kevin Linehan received the Mercer Cup for the three best nett scores of the year.

The club’s annual general meeting will be held next month.

Boort’s annual tournament was aborted by COVID lockdowns, a similar experience for major play that had also been scheduled for Wedderburn and Inglewood.

Hopes to expand local Active network LODDON’S sole Active Farmers’ program co-ordinator Claire Harrison is hoping a new scholarship program for the national network will see more people across the region connecting for physical and emotional fitness.

Claire, who runs the Active Farmers program based at Bridgewater, said the estab-

lishment of more programs in Loddon communities would further lift local fitness and engagement.

Active Farmers with partners FIT College and Hutcheon and Pearce have offered six $7000 scholarships to put more trainers into rural areas.

Darts tournament stays on list LODDON Darts Association remains hopeful it can conduct the annual Wedderburn White Twenty tournament in December.

The tournament is offering $5500 in prizemoney, a round-robin format with five players a team, plus up to three reserves.

Other major tournaments planned by the association have been cancelled this year by COVID restrictions.

Skiing season plans BOORT Ski Club will celebrate its 60th anniversary when the 2021-2022 season starts.

Secretary Kane Collins said the December 29 event would usher in a season with major tournaments in February and March.

The club’s annual meeting and presentation of 2020-2021 season trophies will be on New Year’s Eve.

Blues eye boom for recovery INGLEWOOD is pinning its future on strong community connection for a rise up the Loddon Valley Football Netball League ladders.

After a winless season and huge defeats for the Blues - eight wooden spoons in nine season - club leaders have turned their focus to future seasons with release of a five-year plan - The Next Boom.

The plan advocates greater interaction between football and netball teams and between senior and junior teams with greater family connection and participation.

Under the plan, Inglewood also wants to build a strong junior development program to produce future senior players for the club.

The Next Boom also sees the club wanting to build on its history as one of the oldest continually operating football clubs in Australia formed in 1876, one of the 12 foundation clubs of the Victorian Football Association, foundation club and inaugural premiers of the Loddon Valley Association in 1903 and foundation club and inaugural premiers of the Loddon Valley Basketball (netball) Association in 1951.

The clubs wants to leverage that history in hosting league events and securing national sponsorship and events with groups linked to Inglewood.

In the plan, the Blues want to continue implementation and promotion of policies in order to maintain Level 3 Accreditation in Good Sports Program Inglewood has already started re-signing players for 2022 including young players Jasper McLelland and Taj Rodwell.

Club gets its cup date KORONG Vale Mare Courts Bliss continued on her wonderful winning way with a solid victory at Swan Hill last Thursday evening for trainer Steve Branson and driver James Herbertson.

Courts Bliss has now won four of her last five starts and was looking to boost her record further at Geelong last evening.

The Wedderburn and District Harness Racing Club will conduct its cup meeting on Sunday, January 30. Hopefully by then spectators will be allowed to attend the club’s big meeting.

Feature racing in Victoria will continue at Bendigo on Saturday night with the running of the Group 1 $300,000 Prydes EasiFeed Victoria Cup which has attracted a top class field, including Australia’s best pacer,

King of Swing. Other feature events on the night are the finals of the Victoria Derby and the Victoria Oak, both races are for three year old pacers and have attracted the best of their age group.

MEAN MACHINE SNARES LADSON

BRIDGEWATER has landed one of biggest names in central Victorian football as its senior coach for 2022.

The Mean Machine at the weekend announced Rick Ladson would be at the helm for the next Loddon Valley league season.

President Gary Walters said Ladsen was an ideal appointment to continue building the club’s family and community culture.

“There’s been great development of the group of the last few years and to cap it off with the appointment of Rick to take us into next season is wonderful,” said Walters who is hoping to be at the club’s administrative helm for a 10th year in 2022.

Ladson, a Hawthorn premiership defender and premiership coach in the Bendigo league, said it was exciting to be headed back to Bridgewater where he lined up in 2016 and 2017 at the end of his playing career.

He played 125 games with the Hawks after being drafted from Bendigo Pioneers.

Ladson has spent some time furthering his coaching skills with the Bendigo Pioneers and the Golden Square women’s side.

“There’s a variety of experience I want to pass on and priority will be to continue the improvement at Bridgewater and the development of younger players both on and off the field,” Ladson said.

Fully vaxed can train but not play LODDON bowls clubs have been told fully vaccinated members can practice in groups of five.

The advice has been given

by Bowls Victoria with the release of updated returnto-play guidelines.

The policy says for partially or not vaccinated, outdoor practice for up to two people plus coach is allowed.

Bowls Victoria says it is still waiting on Government to decide whether there can be multiple groups of five or two per facility.

Pennant bowls had been scheduled to start for Bendigo Division One last weekend with other divisions and midweek pennant next week.

North Central’s top division, including Wedderburn and Boort, had also been due to start at the weekend.

Community sport is waiting on the State Government to set a return-to-play date.

In the announcement of Ladson’s return, the club said he had been a popular figure in the red and white and “we are excited

for what season 2022 holds for our club and our talented playing group”.

The club thanked outgoing coaches Dale Cameron and Jayden Donaldson who took the Mean Machine to third spot on the Loddon Valley league ladder this season.

MARONG Tennis Association is meeting tonight to discuss delaying the start of its season.

The association, that includes Newbridge, Woodstock and Derby clubs, had planned to start play this month.

However, with details on allowed community sport under COVID restrictions still be be announced, the association is considering waiting a month before the first serve,.

Marong association will increase to eight teams with the admission of Woodvale.
