$20m TUNNEL TIP CATALYST Metals could construct a $20 million tunnel at Mitiamo to continue gold exploration hundreds of metres below ground at the Boyd’s Dam project.

CEO John McKinstry said a final decision would be made within months, describing the company’s quarterly report to the Australian Stock Exchange as significant.

Mr McKinistry said a tunnel would allow exploration to go “underground and be more active all year round”.

“We are pretty certain we have something viable to mine. This is a significant step forward,” he said.

Crews are currently using diamond, reverse circulation and air core drilling rigs at the site. Overseeing operations for the past four years has been field supervisor Deeanne Gould (pictured). Crews are working up to two 12-hour shifts a day on the rigs.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT CAMPBELL Hancock has been announced a recipient of a Central Goldfields Masonic Group scholarship. Campbell, now a student at East Loddon P12 College, received his award last week from group chairman Ken Calder (left) and Tarnagulla Primary School principal Leigh Mellberg. Campbell was one of 16 students awarded scholarships for 2021 with selection and announcements made in recent weeks. The Masonic group includes lodges at Avoca, Carisbrook, Maryborough, Dunolly and Talbot who rais funds for the annual scholarships and are supported by the Freemasons’ Foundation of Victoria.

Volunteers get an extension WEDDERBURN’S State Emergency Service unit volunteers now have until next Thursday to get their third COVID vaccination.

Controller Paul Gordon-Cooke said the extension was given late last week.

However, unit members remain on limited duties and still risk being placed “on leave” if they have not had the third, or

booster, vaccination. Mr Gordon-Cooke said further talks with being held with SES chiefs.

All SES volunteers are part of the State Government mandate for specified workers to have the booster.

The SES says units from other areas will continue “to support local capacity” and does not expect “any further impact on operational responses”.

School makeovers with State Budget windfalls MORE than $25 million will be spent upgrading two Loddon P-12 colleges.

Funding was announced in Tuesday’s State Budget for works at Wedderburn College and East Loddon P12.

Wedderburn wants to start its building upgrades within months after the Budget included $12.9 million for the school.

College council president Carolyn Stephenson and principal Danny Forrest said the announcement capped off more than five years of planning and preparation.

“We’re thrilled ... everyone has worked hard on the plan. It’s very important for the school,” Carolyn said.

Western Victoria Region MP Jaala Pulford visited the school on Tuesday morning to an-

nounce the Budget allocation to Carolyn and assistant principal Dean Lockhart.

Ms Pulford said the Victorian School Building Authority would be working to have the project completed as soon as possible.

The college says an immediate priority will be reinstating the VCE student block where asbestos was removed earlier this year.

Works will also include construction of a cover over the basketball courts and repairing the leaking stadium roof.

Mr Forrest said the school’s second toilet block also was a priority with portable blocks being used while the block was out of action.

Ms Pulford said: “You can’t get a first-rate education in a secondrate classroom. This investment

will go a long way towards improving the facilities for students at Wedderburn College and making their educational journey a modern and engaging one.”

At East Loddon, $12.75 million has been allocated with principal Steve Leed expecting it will be used for new classrooms and a science wing. ““We have three more stages of building to go under our masterplan ... it will be a matter of whether this completes two or three stages,” he said.

Mr Leed said he expected to have further details this week.

East Loddon’s $12.75 million allocation comes one top of $4.5 million in the 2020 Budget for upgrades.

Work on construction of a new library, multi-purpose and meeting spaces started early last

year and Mr Leed said buildings would be handed over by contractors on June 10.

East Loddon and Wedderburn were two of 29 school upgrade programs in the Budget.

The Government claimed it had invested $12.8 billion building new schools and more than 1850 school upgrades in the past eight years.

It said the Wedderburn project would create better learning environments for “the growing school”, describing the $14.9 million allocation as a huge investment.

Carolyn said the Wedderburn school community had worked for the past five years developing a project to improve working and learning places at Wedderburn College, making it “a great place to be”.

IN BRIEF Market cancelled INGLEWOOD Lions Club has been forced to cancel its monthly market on Saturday. Lions moved the market to Brooke Street last year but there continues to be discussions with Regional Roads Victoria on the Calder Highway location. Club officials said they hoped to have the market running again next month.

Leading again MICHAEL Hobson was reelected president of the Inglewood-Bridgewater RSL sub-branch at last week’s annual meeting. Also elected were vice-president Glenn Catto, secretary Bill Concol, treasurer Kevin Stewart, appeals officer Mel Gilmour, membership officer Stephen Gartside, welfare officer Gaylia Bell, social officer Wendy Gilmour, RSL region seven representatives Arthur Alsop and Kevin Stewart. The sub-branch currently has one life member, 14 service members, 73 affiliate members and 22 social members.

Medal investiture BRIDGEWATER’S Graham and Jenny Hosking attended the Order of Australia investiture at Government House last week where Graham’s mother Ruth received the Medal of the Order of Australia from Governor Linda Dessau for community service, including aged care advocacy.

Active cases SEVEN new COVID-19 cases were reported in the Loddon on Tuesday. There were 41 active cases listed for local communities.

Town farewells ‘tremendous bloke’

The late Robert Stone

PYRAMID Hill this afternoon says a final farewell to former fire brigade captain Robert Stone who died last week aged 81.

Current captain Steve Mann said Robert had been a tremendous member of the brigade for 60 years until moving to Kerang two years ago.

He said Robert joined the CFA in 1957 and was a probationary member until 1960.

Robert served as captain in 1984-1988 and 1994-2000 and also had three terms as as lieutenant and was a CFA life member.

“He was very active in the running and demo side of the brigade and coached the senior team for many years and also helped with the juniors,” Steve said.

Robert was also a life member of Pyramid Hill Football Club.

His funeral will be held today at 1.30pm at St Patrick’s Catholic Church.

THE STATE Government late yesterday morning announced Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne was in Mitiamo to announce maintenance works would be carried out in V/Line freight rail corridors across the state, with a focus on western, north-western, and metropolitan corridors, and the Benalla-Oaklands freight line. No other details of the visit were released.

MINING LATEST Victoria continues process reform STATE Resources Minister Jaala Pulford on Tuesday said there was excitement about Victoria’s second gold rush.

Ms Pulford the Government was working through a reform process to meet a growing demand for exploration and mining approvals in Victoria.

The minister said the Government continued to invest in meeting a level of demand and activity she described as phenomenal.

Ms Pulford made the comments during a Budget day visit to Wedderburn.

Significant call, says Catalyst

RESULTS from a drilling campaign at Catalyst Metals’ Four Eagles project will form a key part of a “development decision on constructing an exploration tunnel later in 2022”.

Last Friday’s announcement to the Australian Stock Exchange has been called significant by the company’s chief executive officer John McKinstry.

He said that if a tunnel was constructed, it would allow year-round exploration at the site near Mitiamo.

Mr McKinstry said drilling was currently a six-month-a-year activity because of climate and cropping.

He said the tunnel, if it proceeded and per-

mits were approved, would cost $20 million.

“We won’t be considering it unless we are confident about things. We are pretty confident we have something viable,” he said.

Assay results from the Four Eagles drilling campaign are being finalised and expected in the June quarter The ASX was told reverse circulation drilling at Boyd’s Dam was almost half complete.

“It is showing signs of continuation of the gold mineralisation at the northern and southern extents of the Boyd’s Dam structure,” the company said.

“Deeper diamond drilling at Boyd’s Dam and Hayanmi has identified mineralised structures, but there is still insufficient drill-

ing to establish continuity. Of note is the presence of two sulphide-mineralised westdipping shear zones at Hayanmi with a similar geometry around the anticline to that of Boyd’s Dam. Assays are pending.”

A program of diamond drilling was completed on the Tomorrow, MacNaughtan, and Lawry prospects to provide structural detail on known gold occurrences, and the remainder being step-out drilling at Macnaughtan.

Results are expected to be available this quarter as are results from air and diamond drilling at Drummartin.

Work planned this quarter at Four Eagles includes completion of definitive structural investigation drilling.

Catalyst’s current exploration footprint in the Loddon.

Further testing needed of 1km ‘gold hint’ path GOLD mineralisation has been found in the first drilling program in the Boort district.

Catalyst told the ASX that its exploration, a joint venture with Hancock Prospecting, “has encountered a possible trend of gold mineralisation at least a kilometre long that will require further testing”.

It said a detailed gravity survey over almost the entire licence generated 12 targets for air core drilling.

Drilling was conducted in two campaigns in November-December and February- March.

The quarterly report said 50 holes had been completed to carry out initial testing on four gravity targets and results had been received for 38 holes.

“Of significance on Target 2, gold mineralisation ... has been intersected on two traverses about 1000 metres apart and may represent a trend similar to others in the Bendigo Fosterville district.

“The discovery of gold mineralisation in the first ever drilling program at the Boort licence is testament to the excellent potential on the Catalyst’s Victorian tenements.”

$10m starting point to spur shire growth AN INITIAL $10 million investment from government for the future of Loddon Shire towns is the starting point in the council’s detailed 2022 priorities paper.

Council last week released the 20-page booklet that expands on its key election year priorities reported exclusively in the Loddon Herald in March.

“The shortage of the availability of land and homes in small communities such as Wedderburn is a significant roadblock to growth,” council says in asking for $294,000 to progress the next stages of its Wedderburn housing estate.

And government has been asked for $5 million to upgrade streetscapes in Bridgewater and Inglewood. Bridgewater works would include significant drainage improvements and removal of high gutters while Inglewood would see removal of overhead powerlines.

Also making the list of immediate requests is $3.5 million for stages two and three of the Pyramid Hill Community Centre.

Work is tipped to start this year on stage one that includes an allied health wing, senior

citizens’ room and kitchen but council wants to quickly move into other stages that will see construction of a community hub, neighbourhood men’s shed and community gymnasium completed by 2025.

Recreation features in the priority document with $400,000 requests for development of

masterplans at each recreation and open space and $130,000 towards an open space and aquatic strategy.

Council is also asking government to provide $140,000 indexed annually for a municipal emergency resourcing program with an officer shared with Central Goldfields Shire to support

strategic emergency management activities.

Improvements at Wedderburn and Boort caravan parks make the list with a $2.5 million price tag for works that would include sewer and power upgrades, and sealing of park roads.

Council also wants $300,000 for a three-year staff appointment to enhance community cultural and diversity support.

The priority booklet reinforces council’s top advocacy issues of child care, telecommunications, swimming pool maintenance and upgrades, roads, water and sewerage.

Council says it will also advocate for continuation of the Healthy Heart of Victoria and the Strong Families, Strong Children programs.

The council tells candidates for this year’s federal and state elections: “Our council plan is a reflection of council’s commitment to the community and provides a strong link between the community vision and the council plan.

“The council plan is achievable, goal-focused, progressive and sustainable.”

Local house price jump streets head LODDON towns are leading Victoria in house price increases, according to data released last week.

The Calder corridor has driven the jump in Loddon Shire average prices from $202,500 in March 2021 to $332,500 a year later.

The 64.2 per cent increase in the highest in Victoria over the last 12 months.

Next closest is Warrnambool where house prices rose 39.6 per cent to an average of $610,000.

Central Goldfields Shire saw an increase of 30 per cent closely followed by Northern Grampians half a percent behind and Greater Bendigo 27.8 per cent.

“This (regional in increases) isn’t just isolated to one pocket of regional Victoria, this is broad-based across many areas,” said Domain chief of research and economics Dr Nicola Powell.

Loddon real estate agents have reported strong demand for local property since the pandemic began two years ago with some listings lasting just days on the market.

There is an expectation that next month’s release of Census data may show an increase in the Loddon Shire population for the first time in years.

Potentially the greatest day on the Wedderburn College calendar, the school Fete was held on the last day of Term 1, and was a huge success.

Students and community members were treated with a range of inflatable rides and activities, including laser tag, wipeout, jumping castles and go carts!

Students spent weeks organising classroom stalls and enjoyed running them on the day.

Wedderburn College was overwhelmed with the community support and look forward to more events in the near future.

Mentors in driving seat

A LEARNER driver program is geared to be back on the roads after potential mentors signed up on Friday night.

North Central Local Learning Employment Network’s Peter Aurisch re-launched the program at Pyramid Hill’s Volunteer Expo.

Peter signed up potential learner driver mentors who will undertake two days of training before guiding district youngsters preparing to earn their driving licence.

He said the program had been running for 10 years but was put in abeyance for the past two years with COVID restrictions.

Peter said the program was aimed to people aged between 16 and 20, helping them gain driving hours and knowledge in maintenance of vehicles.

“We really do rely on volunteer mentors to make the program possible,” he said.

“We expect the re-launched program will be up and running in about six weeks,” More than 10 organisations had displays at the expo with several saying they had signed up new participants.

Groups ranged from the historical society and quarterhorse association to CFA, Ambulance Victoria, Lions, football club and the United Filipino Organisation.

IN BRIEF Truckie off road A HALLAM truck driver has had his licence suspended after allegedly driving around highway police conducting roadside breath tests at Inglewood. Goldfields highway patrol’s Sgt Brad Hall said the man, 48, retuned a positive roadside result and was taken to the Inglewood police station where his evidentiary breath test indicated he had a blood alcohol level of 0.19. Sgt Hall said the man’s licence was immediately suspended and he would appear in the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court at later date.

Memorial plaque THE Newbridge community will unveil a memorial plaque honouring Graeme Erbs who died last November. Graeme had been active in the community which has raised funds to the plaque in the town’s memorial garden. It will be unveiled on May 14.

The awards are held annually by the Adult, Community and Further Education Board and celebrate the success of individuals, programs and training providers across Victoria.

This includes categories for learner awards, for trainers and leaders and Learn Local programs.

Knocked out with COVID WHILE Mallee candidates continue to traverse Victoria’s largest electorate as polling day approaches, one has been missing from the hustings this week.

Labor’s Carole Hart has been out of action since Sunday after testing positive to COVID-19. She is expected back on the trail next week.

All about money, confirms AEC EFFICIENT use of taxpayer money was behind basing the Mallee electorate divisional office in Bendigo, according to the Australian Electoral Commission.

Director media and digital engagement Evan Ekin-Smyth told the Loddon Herald: “I can confirm ... that AEC divisional office presences are not always located in the division they’re covering.

“It has been some time since

we operated an individual office for each division.

“The reason - efficiency of our operations (the all-important taxpayer dollar) and the reality that operating an office in each electoral division was making less and less sense given that very little in-person interactions occur throughout the electoral cycle. Divisional offices have a range of functions that include

processing enrolments and planning electoral services. These tasks do not necessitate an office in the relevant geographical area.”

The AEC said Mallee pre-poll votes would be counted on election night at local pre-poll centres except Maryborough and its Bendigo outpost centre where counting would continue after the May 21 election.

“The counting process is well administered and secured with party and candidate appointed scrutineers advised in advance of counting locations to enable their attendance,” the AEC told the Loddon Herald.

Declaration of the poll will also be in Bendigo.

The AEC has began processing postal vote applications and prepoll opens Monday.

THIS WEEK’S LOCAL ISSUE ... CHILd CArE SOPHIE BALDWIN (IND) Loddon residents have as much right to access a day care facility as any other shire across Mallee. Families are disadvantaged and so are Loddon towns because without a daycare facility and no reliable care, people cannot return to work. Families settle in other towns and it is too difficult to attract people to Loddon and it becomes a ghost shire.

I have met with Loddon Shire to be personally updated on day care and other issues affecting the shire. I have also met with the principal of Wedderburn College Danny Forrest to discuss the issue of daycare and tour the proposed daycare site on the school grounds. Wedderburn College is more than just a school, it is a safe place for many of the children who attend and if Danny can’t attract teachers to his school because there is no day care within the shire, how can he continue to support his students and remain the safe place so desperately needed?

As a federal member I will have influence. Loddon Shire has a desperate need for day care, it has a plan, a site and it is ready to go in Wedderburn and considering there is not one single facility across the shire it should be a top funding priority. The home-based model of child care is also a viable option that must be investigated and adapted to better suit rural communities.

Loddon has got to the point where it is so behind other shires it demands special assistance just to get started.

Co-location is not only a great idea, it makes sense geographically and helps families who have both day care and school aged children by offering services in one spot. It also helps with transition, allows for sharing of resources

STUART KING (UAP) It is not right that Loddon families and businesses are disadvantaged by the lack of local child care and unfortunately this problem is not unique to the Loddon Shire or region. Lack of available child care is an issue across many parts of the electorate.

I approached the Loddon Shire, as I did with every local government council across the electorate, requesting a meeting during the campaign to hear directly from council about the major issues affecting their Council, however no meeting was forthcoming.

I will support government action to address child care across the electorate including Loddon. I hesitate with the word “immediate” as it builds an expectation that something can happen instantly, but I would certainly prioritise it as I fully understand it is a major issue.

I don’t fully understand how the model for child care funding works, however where the Federal Government has a role I would support improving its funding of child care for Loddon and the rest of the electorate. Whilst we are in the current situation of having a lack of workforce it is crucial that parents be given the maximum opportunity to participate in employment and I am aware that availability of child care is one of the barriers. If special assistance is required to kick start child care businesses I see that as something worth pursuing.

Co-location of these facilities simply makes sense on many fronts, including potential to share facilities, simplicity for parents in creating a “one stop drop off” and familiarisation of children with the school environment. This methodology has worked in many other locations with great success.

ANNE WEBSTER (NATIONALS) Access to child care can directly impact young parent’s household income, but also is the difference for many to be able to pursue their career ambitions. I want to see the disadvantage removed, however it’s clear that in a large and sparse country, there isn’t one quick solution. I am working hard to ensure that we are being active to use every tool in the toolbox to rectify this issue for regional Australians.

Community members from Wedderburn and Pyramid Hill have spoken to me about their need for child care.

I am already working hard in this space to ensure that this lack is addressed. Our government has already invested more than $540 million over four years through the Community Child Care Fund (CCCF), which supports over 900 services in disadvantaged communities to help children participate in childcare. A further $19.4 million has been announced in the budget specifically for regional communities. This competitive round will open in July, but targets towns where there is no child care.

I fought for childcare access for Mallee’s regional towns where there is none, and the new CCCF regional funding is the response of the government to this. I encourage community members to work with the Loddon Council and apply when the grant opens. If I am theMMember at that time, I would be happy to support the submission with a letter.

I think the co-location option is the best option for smaller towns and makes perfect sense. It provides efficiency for parents dropping of children for school, kinder and childcare.

CHRIS LAHY (CITIZENS’ PARTY) It is certainly not okay for Loddon families and businesses to disadvantaged by the lack of local child care. This is a shameful inequity that many regional local government areas should not have to put up with.

I am well aware that there are no child care places in the Loddon and I spoken with the Loddon Shire about this in the past as well as personally knowing families who are in a situation needing child care and I would support any initiatives to remedy this situation.

I absolutely support government assistance to encourage child care businesses to operate in the Loddon But what we have here is a symptom of decades of neglect, reduction of services and the general lowering of the standard of living.

Consequently any profit based service provider is not willing to run a business in these conditions and local government authorities like the Loddon Shire have not the funds to provide these services also.

The solution to this a Commonwealth Postal Savings Bank and a National infrastructure Bank( points 1 and 2 ACP policy platform) from which LGAs can borrow to fund these types of infrastructure projects.

Certainly I would support co-location if the facility is fit for purpose and or it needs capital investment for improvements on existing infrastructure or replacement this can be funded in the same way with a Commonwealth Postal Savings Bank and a National Infrastructure Bank.

Call on future of lake ideas FUTURE ownership of actions suggested in the Lake Boort Scarred Tree Masterplan to implement infrastructure development of Lake Boort will be the responsibility of Parks Victoria.

Loddon Shire councillors last week received the final masterplan and decided it future would be with Parks Victoria.

Council had allocated a $60,000 budget for the masterplan project with $15,000 cash and in-kind support from Dja Dja Wurrung Aboriginal Clans Corporation.

Councillors also agreed that the final masterplan would help support council tourism and economic development opportunities for Lake Boort.

Modern touch to debutante dance AFTER a little delay, Wedderburn College was finally able to host its 2022 debutante ball on Friday night.

The school gymnasium was transformed with a stunning stage, ready for the eager students to make their grand entrance.

The parents’ association and the families had invested a lot of time and effort into making the venue spectacular after the ball

was postponed last term when COVID isolation rules were in force.

Primary school students Archie Polkinghorne and Lara Polkinghorne adorably opened the night.

The 10 debutantes and partners were polished in their presentations, with lots of glowing smiles. Each student had a written passage shared as they were presented and the common

theme was that the students were excited to have friends attending the evening.

The students had completed many weeks of dance training, thanks to the dedication of Dede Williams and her training companions The debutante set’s routines saw traditional dances performed to modern music. The ‘special person’ dance brought even more smiles.

Activists bid at roo call credit ANIMAL activists have tried to claim credit for rejection of a planning permit to process kangaroos for pet meat at Inglewood.

Loddon Shire councillors last week rejected the application on a planning scheme technicality.

Victorian Kangaroo Alliance said it and the Animal Justice Party ran a campaign with 1263 emails sent to the Loddon Shire tourism team pledging to actively boycott Inglewood if the facility went ahead.

Secretary Glynn Jarrett said: “Whilst the outcome is a win for kangaroos and Loddon Shire overall, it was extremely disappointing to hear the councillors complain about having to reject the application.”

Animal Justice Party MP Andy Meddick claimed “this is a fantastic result for our iconic native animal the kangaroo, and shows just how effective a campaign can

be when run with passion and facts by local community and backed by overwhelming support.”

And animal rights group PETA said “champagne corks were popping at PETA with the news that, after receiving our petition with 7000 signatures, Victoria’s Loddon Shire Council has rejected plans to turn an abandoned abattoir in the area into a facility to skin and butcher kangaroos.”

PETA did not mention the planning scheme-based decision.

While the processing plant was rejected, kangaroo harvesting will continue in the Loddon and other parts of Victoria.

Campaspe Meats’ Loc Rivett said harvested kangaroos would now be taken to other Victorian facilities for processing.

He also said field chillers would be used for local harvesting.

THERE are fears the Loddon’s only agricultural show will falter without more volunteers.

Show society president Madeleine Scott has put out an urgent call out to the community for people to step up and fill key roles in organising the event. ““If we don’t get more of our roles filled, it’s going to be a struggle ...and the show may not happen in October,” Madeleine said.

Madeleine said there was enthusiasm for the 134th show to be staged after two years of COVID postponements.

“We have had some people who were part of the team but are now occupied with other pursuits,” she said.

“Many of our people are also older so we

actually need to find more people to keep the show running.”

Madeleine said the show, planned for the second Saturday in October would include the truck show.

“And if we can get a team together, there will be the excitement of the blade shear competition and fireworks display to the fun of the all new carnival events. All of our favourites will still be there from the horse events and dog trials to the animal farm and the beautiful pieces in the pavilion,” she said.

“The show is an important event - the only agriculture show in the shire - that brings our rural communities together.

“We just need more hands to make it possible in 2022,” Madeleine said.

$30,000 allocated to young farmers LODDON Shire will allocate $30,000 over three years for the Birchip Cropping Group’s Young Farmer Network.

Councillors last week approved funding of the network that will have nine groups in local government areas, including Loddon.

Mayor Dan Straub said: “The program will enable young farmers in our community to gain the skills, knowledge and experience to increase farm profitability and productivity. This is expected to provide

flow-on benefits to our broader Loddon Shire economy.”

Group CEO Fiona Best said last month when launching the network: “The emerging generation of farmers have identified that building strong social and professional networks is fundamental to what can be an isolated profession.

Ecosystem workshops SOIL scientist Theresa Chapman will visit the the Loddon next week speaking on soil ecosystem management and paddock soil biology.

The University of Tasmania soil ecologist will be at events organised by Loddon Plains Future Farming group.

She specialises in links between plant diversity and soil biology in farming systems.

Meanwhile, Agriculture Victoria says growers will be better equipped to manage soil constraints in their paddocks after the development of a three-dimensional mapping strategy, The department says the trials will give a greater understanding of the dynamics and location of constraints to crop production that lurk in the depths of the soil profile.

Senior research scientist Professor Roger Armstrong is lead-

ing the research, working closely with a team of scientists, technicians and PhD students.

The research effort is part of the Victorian Grains Innovation Partnership between Agriculture Victoria and the Grains Research and Development Corporation.

“Growers often have trouble identifying what the soil constraints are in their cropping paddocks, the soil profile can be highly variable, and often they only analyse the topsoil,” Professor Armstrong said.

“However, our research is enabling us to use soil sensor technologies to 3D-map the location and severity of multiple soil constraints at a paddock scale.

“We then use the soil maps we have created and overlay them with ‘above-ground’ crop growth rates, which were developed using a range of crop sensor technologies,” he said.

Cropping group plans anniversary BIRCHIP Cropping Group will celebrate 30 years of sharing agricultural solutions in October. .CEO Fiona Best said the

milestone would be a special achievement for the nationally recognised organisation and its dynamic work.

SHEEP MARKET NUMBERS remained low on Monday despite Bendigo not hosting a sale since before Easter.

Lamb quality was mixed with well finished fat score 3 and 4 lambs in the minority across the yarding which had a lot of plainer types lacking fat cover.

The market did perform around quality with buyers prepared to pay more for any of the better finished trade and heavy lambs.

Support for secondary lambs that lacked either shape or condition remained selective and the sale was very erratic at times.

The best processing lambs were $10 to $15 dearer. Price results for plainer lambs remained similar to the previous sale.

Two stand-out lines of extra heavy crossbred lambs off grain, topped at $278 and $260 but on weight were working out at 700c to 710c/kg cwt.

Sales above $250/head were limited and there wasn’t a lot of big export lambs on offer.

The general run of heavy 2632kg cwt crossbred lambs made from $200 to $235/head.

The pick of the heavy trade lambs 24-26kg cwt making $200 to $209.

Most of these better quality processing lambs were estimated between 750c to 800c/kg cwt.

Plainer domestic weighted lambs with less finish had lower

WOOL carcass price costs of 700c to 750c/kg at $130 to $180/head.

It should also be noted there were lamb sales down to 660c/ kg cwt however this was mainly for mixed or small pen lots.

The sheep sale was stronger with good lines of mutton estimated at 570c to 620c/kg cwt.

THE Australian wool market reversed its downward trend in this series, recording an overall positive movement for the first time in six sales series.

Last week’s short week meant sales were held on Wednesday and Thursday. Despite there only being two days available, the national offering was again of a reasonable size.

Nationally there was 48,752 bales on offer, 5164 more than the previous sale. The large offering received strong widespread competition from the opening lot. The strongest interest again was seen on the higher yielding, lower vegetable matter (vm) lines and those possessing favourable additional measurement results. The higher prices achieved on these lines of wool was a driving factor in the overall positive movements in most Individual Micron Price Guides (MPGs). Across the country the MPGs for merino fleece rose by between 1 and 30 cents. The crossbred sector also recorded overall gains, with the 26.0 micron MPG recording the largest gain for the week, the 38 cent rise was an increase of six per cent.

ANSWERS

WHEN people speak with me about Loddon Shire, a commonly raised concern is the state of Regional Roads Victoria (VicRoads) roads.

We are experiencing frequent heavy and destructive rain events which are causing damage in the form of large potholes and crumbling edges of sealed roads.

These defects can take weeks to months to be addressed.

While Loddon Shire receives reasonable support from the State and Federal Government to maintain our council roads, RRV don’t seem to be keeping up with repairs on the roads designed to get us from A to B. Unfortunately, the community often believes it is council’s responsibility to repair these roads over which we have no control. This damages council’s reputation.

Another concern is the lack of communication with RRV. Emails to them are not receiving responses.

Then there’s the issue of increasing damaging weather events. Are VicRoads taking this into account?

Are they making plans to manage the changes in rainfall patterns to protect roads into the future?

Of course, the main concern is the danger to drivers travelling these roads. Major potholes requiring vehicles to move

on to the wrong side of the road are taking weeks to be repaired.

Many intersections around Newbridge are not safe and require traffic to enter intersections facing oncoming traffic.

The worst of these is the intersection of Wimmera Highway and Bridgewater Maldon Roads.

Many accidents and near-misses have occurred at this spot including a nearmiss for me with my children in the car even though I approach the intersection with great caution.

Some cars don’t realise they are approaching a give way sign and drive through without giving way.

I contacted RRV about the incident but have not received a reply after more than a year.

I understood that this problem intersection had been listed for work by RRV. I’m not sure why it hasn’t occurred.

As the Tarnagulla Ward councillor, I hope RRV are investigating all these problems.

I would like to see an improvement in our arterial roads and with communication.

On a brighter note, it’s wonderful to see most COVID restrictions lifted and people starting to return to life as we knew it before 2020.

People are planning and attending events; conferences and meetings are occurring face to face. We can finally see everyone’s smiles again!

I believe it’s still important to take some precautions to protect the vulnerable in our communities as the pandemic is not yet over however life is again active and people are venturing out.

Over the ANZAC Day long weekend, the Tiny Town Arts Trail was in full swing.

Tarnagulla Ward hosted an art display, quilt display, ceramics display, chrysanthemum show, high tea and garden tours over the weekend.

I hope the vibrancy of the weekend points to tourists being more comfortable to resume travelling and the start of businesses again being able to prosper in Loddon.

Across the shire, ANZAC Day ceremonies were held to remember our fallen and to reflect on the service of those involved. The services were well attended and I would like to thank the many volunteers who made the ceremonies so special.

Tarnagulla CFA held the first ever dawn service which was a professionally organised and incredibly moving event.

Yes, there are votes to be won here

MURTOA is a delightful Wimmera town, less than 30 minutes from Horsham, where tourists stop off to see the famous Stick Shed grain silo. It has a population similar to Loddon communities of Inglewood, Wedderburn, Boort and Pyramid Hill.

And last week, the Coalition promised that community $845,000 to build a child care centre in the Murtoa.

The announcement even had the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce.

But local Loddon communities, including those in the Calder growth corridor emerging north of Bendigo are still without any child care facilities.

The reasons to justify funding a new facility in Murtoa are even more compelling

EDITORIAL in the Loddon but so far, the Federal Government has been pretty much silent on the plight faced by local families, health providers and businesses whose staff, present and future, need child care.

There are two options on the board to take Loddon communities out of this child care desert that hampers our population and economic growth.

Co-location on school land or government assistance to make a business model realistic for private enterprise. Both require commitment from governments at federal and state levels, either would be an improvement on the current situation.

Without genuine and prompt support

and action from the Federal and State Governments, their inaction will only exacerbate the population pains of Melbourne and severely retard growth in the Loddon.

To ignore local communities during this or any election campaign is inviting selfinflicted peril.

Federal election candidates were invited to comment on the local child care situation in this week’s Loddon Herald.

Their responses on the issue may give an insight into their level of action and engagement to date and a hint of what, if elected, they would do.

An 1879 advertisement for John Newman devastation. The Sandhurst to Inglewood railway bridge approaches were injured to such an extent that the morning train could not proceed, the passengers having to alight and cross the bridge on foot, the bridge being described as being like a raft.

A train was sent out from Sandhurst, which came as far as the damaged approaches, so that repairs could be made in time for the five o’clock train to pass over.

During the height of the flood Mr Whites Railway Hotel was flooded out, the water almost up to the window sills, Mrs White having to be carried out through the water. At this spot the creek was almost a quarter of mile wide.

Owing to the flood waters on the Salisbury Plains the coach to Boort was stranded in the middle of a sheet of water, Edward’s Salisbury West hotel being surrounded by water, at that time the wa-

ter was described as being up the jaw of his buggy horse, the Loddon River having risen 30 feet in just 90 minutes.

Incidentally when the creek flooded in 1878 the waters between Mickeys and Wilson lanes flooded the fine orchard of the Gulley family on the east side. Although the house was gone when I was a kid I can remember the fruit trees, they did produce lovely fruit. They have now been bulldozed.

On the other side of the creek stood Castle Eaton, the home of John Frederick Newman, a well to do butcher in Commercial Road, Tarnagulla. He had, what was described as a magnificent crop of pumpkins until the water washed them up against the fence, they looking like beggared wretches.

The heavy rain of October 1903 caused the Bul a Bul creek to over flow, swamping many fine crops and in August 1909, the houses along it described as standing feet deep in water whilst in some cases only the roofs of houses were visible whilst local farmer Barr spent the night perched up a tree. Water was lapping over the Bendigo to Inglewood railway bridge whilst considerable damage was done to approaches so much so that the passengers on the train had to be transported over the bridge on trollies. The road from Inglewood down to the creek was lined with many spectators as they had never seen such an unusual sight.

Flooding of the Bul a Bul creek has occurred to some extent in August 1950, February 1951, July 1952 and August 1955, October 1960, October 1964, May and November 1975, September and December 2010 it is the flood of January 2011, recorded as the second worst ever in the area, the railway line having been washed away, not yet repaired.

THE Sandy Creek was described in 1860 as being three feet above the bridge thus cutting off all communication with the washing place for the ore that was usually carted down from Inglewood to the river for crushing and washing.

There were incidents and characters living along many local creeks that more than a century later still capture imagination and interest.

During February 1875 a six foot black snake entered a farm house and put its head into a cage holding a parrot and swallowed it whole. The offending culprit was despatched.

The Inglewood Advertiser reported the following month that a man named Shea, living upon the Bul a Bul Creek, paid very dearly for a pipeful of tobacco.

He was smoking about his farm, when a spark blew out of his pipe, and in a very short time consumed the whole of the last harvest from five or six acres of ground, along with a winnowing machine valued at nearly £20.

And in June, it was reported that a singular combat took place between a kangaroo and a dog.

“The long tailed one was observed in a paddock belonging to a Mr James Sloan, on the banks of Bul a Bul Creek; and on a dog being after him the kangaroo turned, and seizing the latter in his fore-paws hopped off into the creek, and there tried to drown him ; but not relishing this kind of treatment, the dog freed himself from the kind embrace of his tormentor, and getting on to the back of the latter, held his head under water in such a persistent manner as to quieten him. The dog then swam ashore, and the dead body of the kangaroo floated down the stream.”

That was the same month the Bul a Bul creek was flooded to a depth of around almost a metre at the shire bridge between Bridgewater and Inglewood.

On December 27, 1876 ,the Sandhurst to Inglewood train was approaching the Bul a Bul bridge when a horse began galloping along in front of the engine.

The engine driver blew his whistle whilst also letting off jets of steam to try and frightened the animal but it went on its merry way crossing the bridge and galloping along until it reached the gatehouse towards Inglewood.

It was here the animal was let out onto Inglewood road. The horse was not yet done and it continued to keep up with the train for some distance.

The creek next flooded in May 1877 and later the Shire of Korong employed a Mr Parker to cut a storm channel from Inglewod down to the Bul a Bul Creek.

There were later to be four small stone weirs on this channel which runs along the south side of the Calder Highway In 1878, a downpour lasted for 34 hours, without ceasing a moment, on March 15 and 16. It finally stopped raining about 3am, about an hour after the wind had risen.

At the Bul a Bul creek the approaches to the shire road bridge the flood waters had torn the road to pieces, some parts looking as if the holes had been blasted out with powder. The fences on each side of the approaches had been thrown down bodily by the heavy pressure of water, and altogether the scene around is one of

GOLD EXPLORATION TEAM SEEKING FIELD ASSISTANTS

Catalyst Metals invites community members to apply for a role as a field assistant during our 2022 exploration program. The program commenced in November 2021 and is anticipated to continue through to the end of May 2022.

The role of field assistant is required to assist the geologists to implement drilling programs in the Mitiamo, Dingee, and Boort areas. The tasks generally include an element of manual handling, where drill hole samples are sorted, transported and sub-sampled. All work does require accurate documentation, so a good level of numeracy and literacy is required for this kind of work.

Day re-elected club president ROBERT Day has been re-elected president of Inglewood Bowling Club.

Last week’s annual meeting also saw Christine McEwan elected vice-president, Lindsay Kelly secretary and Vicky Tierney treasurer. Other board members: Wade Roberts, Ian Chamberlain, David Whitehead, Bruce McClymont, Bev Taig, Edna Patterson and Merilyn Chamberlain.

Mental health session INGLEWOOD footballers will attend a special post-training session tonight when HALT (Hope Assistance Local Tradies) representatives will speak about mental health and suicide prevention.

HALT is a national grass-roots suicide prevention charity that hosts Save Your Bacon Brekkies and safeTALK events for tradies and apprentices at workplaces, hardware stores and sporting clubs to raise awareness of mental health and connect people with support services.

Due to the seasonal basis of our exploration activities, the field team members are engaged on a casual basis as defined in the Mining Industry Award (2020).

Kane hits fourth Kara Kara title

ANDREW Kane has won his fourth consecutive Kara Kara Golf Association title.

Kane took out honours when the 2021 event was finally staged at Wedderburn on Sunday after postponements last year by COVID restrictions.

Seven of the 12 clubs were represented and the 18-hole event went off without a hitch.

With a par round off 69 off the stick, Andrew Kane was the clear victor.

But it was the hotly contested battle for runner-up that caused the most excitement. A threeway tie on 80 between Donald’s Luke Kelly, St Arnaud’s Craig Burn, and Robbie Day from Korong Vale, meant a countback was required to decide the official second placegetter.

With a fine 39 around the difficult back nine, it was Kelly playing in his first champion of champions event who was declared runner up for 2021.

A stableford ball run was also added for extra interest, and it was Day who came out on top of that event, Luke and Brett Schofield from Charlton also picked up balls for their efforts.

At Boort on Saturday, the annual Captain versus President match play event was held with the course in excellent condition at the rain.

Tim Lanyon relished the challenge though and with an outstanding one over on the front nine, carded 80 off the stick to give him nett 71, just ahead of Alister McDougal, who also played brilliantly, on nett 72.

Rounding out the ball pool was Robbie Johnston in his return to

Level 3 champion Lindsay Patullo (Charlton), Boort’s Daryl Henderson who won Level 1 and Lois Munro (Swan Hill).

DARYL Henderson has won the Victorian Croquet Association’s golf croquet championship.

The Boort player’s success in the championships played at VCA headquarters in Melbourne was part of a strong result for the Murray Valley region team.

Every region in the state had individual club champions play off for the chance to play in this event.

Murray Valley, was represented by Daryl in Level 1, Lois Munro (Swan Hill) in Level 2 and Lindsay Patullo (Charlton) in Level 3.

Vanston’s super day out EIGHT golfers took advantage of the great weather conditions on Sunday at Inglewood Golf Club.

The back nine was open for the first time this season thanks to the continued work of David Vanstone, Will McIntyre and Lindsay Kelly.

The event was stroke, and David had a great round with 76 off the stick and a nett 68 to win the day from Will with nett 72.

David also won the super pin the 9th to totally clean up the awards on the day.

The club says it still has plenty of room for new golfers or beginners at its Sunday events starting at 12.15pm.

Play open to men and women and there has been upsurge of interest since the successful golf clinics supported by Inglewood IGA last month.

Hundreds sign up for special run WITH just over a week to Run for Resilience, organisers have received more than 400 registrations.

It will be third time lucky for the Active Farmers event promoting rural communities and wellbeing - twice scheduled for 2021, Run for Resilience was postponed by COVID restrictions.

But organiser Claire Harrison said resilience had shone through with hundreds of eager participants preparing for one of three courses around Bridgewater on May 14.

Claire hopes there will be more than 500 registrations when runners and walkers step off from 8am.

Many are expected to take the 5km course honouring Lesley Morrison who died last year.

The Fitty’s Five participants will start at 9.30am.

“We know there are significant benefits to both physical and mental health when we are physically fit and have a challenge to work towards,” Claire said.

This event will also provide the community with an opportunity to get together, have some fun and enjoy the community connection Meanwhile, organisers of the traditional Bridgewater Mother’s Classic have reminded participants that the event will not be held this year.

Instead, they are encouraging people to take part in Run for Resilience.

THE annual Djaara Cup fixture was the feature at Charlton last week with the victor being Kialla trainer Rod Lakey’s 3Y0 Art Major-Lombo Cloud Nine gelding Lochinvar Jag in a mile rate of 1-57.9.

Driven by former Charltonian Ellen Tormey, Lochinvar Jag led throughout from the pole to street his rivals by 19.2 metres from local hope Cee Cee In America (three back the markers from gate four) which was badly held up before using the sprint lane. Second stanza sets up victory PYRAMID Hill has extended its successful Loddon Valley league opening run to three wins in a hard-fought and enthralling contest at Malone Park.

There was plenty at stake as the league’s two unbeaten clubs locked horns, and after 10 minutes it looked like being a lopsided affair.

The Panthers rammed home three goals before the Dogs entered their forward arc.

Led by Ryley and Braidy Dickens the Dogs then flipped the game on its head.

In conjunction with Zac Dingwall across halfback, Nathan Catherwood on the wing and genuine contests from Willcox and Dye in the ruck, the Bulldogs rested control and piled on seven goals to one in the second stanza.

A 25-point half time lead was maintained and despite Marong gradually eating into it, the Bulldogs ran out deserved 12 point victors. Captain Steven Gunther, Brad Ladson “Scooter” Mann and Bryden Morison were other major contributors in a team that had no passengers.

The Michael Herrick Memorial Cup was accepted by a happy Nathan Fitzpatrick and the club

song was belted with ample gusto.

In the reserves game the opening quarter was similar to the senior game. Marong jumped from the blocks, but could not be contained.

They finished up handy winners, with 29 scoring shots to 10 a fair indication of their dominance. Mitch Cheeseman (three goals) and “Dutchy” Holland in his first game for the year were stand out performers.

Jordan Simpson won plenty of hardball and Glenn James and Mitch Gunther covered plenty of ground but the result gave the coaching staff plenty to ponder before this week’s clash with Maiden Gully.

Meanwhile, Calivil gave Mitiamo a scare, leading at half-time in captain Evan Ritchie’s 200th game before the Superoos broke away, the home side unable to chalk up its first win.

Inglewood bounced back with a game style of far greater conviction than the previous week against Bridgewater who on Saturday easily accounted by Bears Lagoon Serpentine.

though accuracy was astray often.

Inglewood was again well served by Jaspa Wendels and Gabe Nevins with the Murphy brothers Tyler and Riley also featuring in play.

Addlem, Rasmussen and Hicks were best for the Rams. Rusmassen, Addlem and Diss each kicked two goals.

Will Blues scare the Superoos?

TWO crucial games loom in Loddon Valley football this Saturday.

In any other year and at any other ground, pundits would have already marked Mitiamo to defeat Inglewood.

But 2022 is a new year and Inglewood is tipped to still inject several more new players into the senior team.

Mitiamo will need much closer to its A team on Saturday at Inglewood to take the points. It’ll be close but for now, the odds are still with the Superoos.

Bridgewater too faces a tough call against Calivil, still winless but a side that pushed Mitiamo for more than a half last week.

Again, the Mean Machine should be favoured to take the points but with the passing of every week, Calivil is closer to a win.

The remaining rounds of senior football will be chalk and cheese.

Newbridge, who also pushed Mitiamo a few weeks back, will be very much outclassed by the strong Marong outfit who will want a solid rebound.

And Pyramid Hill, the only undefeated team after four rounds, has simply too much class and power for Maiden Gully who are wallowing at the bottom of the ladder. The Dogs are the early season benchmark.

Demons emerge on top

WYCHEPROOF Narraport was quickly on the scoreboard with Green registering the first major score early the clash with Boort.

The Pies started to get their game together from the restart and pushed the ball forward as they broke through the Demons defence, but they could only convert to a minor score.

The Demons then attacked from the restart and took the ball deep into the attacking zone and offered a few opportunities without result.

Finally, they got one through the big sticks just prior to the first break and it gave them a slender lead of 15 points to take to quarter time.

Boort started the second quarter better and posted their first goal of the game just after the start.

The Demons replied and for a short while the two sides went goal for goal. The game was a more even contest in this term and both sides showed some good passages of play, and both were able to reap the rewards.

Late in the term the Demons went on the attack again and they finished the term off better than Boort kicking five goals to three and took a 27-point lead to the halfway mark.

Boort had a little bit of work to do in what was developing into a low scoring affair and Brodie Leonard-Shannon gave them a glimmer of hope as he converted to reduce the margin back to a reachable target.

Scoring for both sides became

Lachlan Hall was one of Boort’s best in the under 17 victory over Wycheproof Narraport. LH PHOTO a hard task as the defences of both teams got down to do their work and both were able to limit and advances into their forward zones.

Wycheproof Narraport broke the drought with their only goal for the quarter well into the term, but it would be enough to keep the Magpies at a distance.

Near three quarter time the Magpies rallied to score another goal, and this would put them back in the game, just 20 points adrift of the Demons and in with a chance to record their second win in as many weeks.

The final term did not produce what some witnessing the game thought might evolve into in this final quarter.

With just over three goals separating the two sides and both in

with the chance to record their second win, but the game didn’t turn out that way as it became scrappy at times with no side being able to take any advantage from the contest.

One goal was all that was registered between the two sides.

Boort let this one slip with only a minor score being registered in both the opening and final terms and this also helped the Demons record their second win.

Both sides will gain from the experience of not only the game under lights but what lies ahead for both as clubs move further into the season.

Meanwhile, Boort’s junior sides were simply on-form taking out the under 14 and under 17 encounters and keeping the Demons scoreless.

Stunning third term a shining moment WEDDEDRBURN supporters didn’t have to wait long to see how the big North Central test against Sea Lake Nandaly would play out.

From the first bounce the Tigers won the centre clearances and opportunities galore were presented to Billy McInnes the Tigers full forward and he didn’t let the side down. Five goals by quarter time and McInnes had the Redbacks under the pump.

A 10-goals to one first half saw the Tigers in complete control and the Redbacks didn’t seem to have any answers to combat the never ending supply of forward delivery.

The pace of the Cox brothers was a concern for the Redbacks.

Trent Donnan was everywhere and this continued for four quarters, as was Brodie Adcock and Austin Mertz whose continual delivery forward set up many opportunities.

The second half revealed a huge turnaround for the Redbacks, so much so that they held the Tigers goalless in a much improved third quarter.

Jayden Jones had worked hard in the first half but he lifted further after half time.

Corey Lowry on a wing had led from the front in the first half continued in the same vein. Ran hard and tackled well.

Darcy Jackson moved on to the dangerous McInnes in the second quarter played close and kept the Tiger forward to a goalless second half, in a fine effort.

Sam Lockhart in a back pocket made many saves and cleared numerous Tiger forward thrusts, in his best game and the Redbacks will be looking to more of the same from here on.

Matt Lockhart rates a big mention on his efforts on the taller and mobile Tigers ruckman Ryan O’Sullivan in the ruck contests.

He used his body well and was able to negate a lot of the spring that O’Sullivan generates by maintaining body contact at ball ups and throw ins.

Hamish Winter-Irving and Jordan Rosengren marked strongly and were a match up in the physical contests.

Tom Campbell and Danny Benaim offered good targets forward but were up against a tight, well drilled Tiger defence.

In the reserves, a youthful and speedy Tigers outfit outran and outplayed the undermanned Redbacks in comprehensive fashion at Tigerland.

The Redbacks tried hard but the incessant hard running and superior ball use by the Tigers constantly saw the Redbacks on the back foot and running second at most contests.

Chase Tait with four goals, covered plenty of territory for the Tigers and the Redbacks found him a difficult matchup.

Jacob Piccoli at full forward made the most of limited opportunities and finished with three goals.

NIGHT DELIGHTS

WINTER sports action under lights brought hundreds of fans to Boort Park on Saturday night.

Boort was playing Wycheproof Narraport for North Central league premiership points in football, netball and hockey.

Crowds gathered around fire pits barracking loudly as the chill of a brisk night air descended on the park.

Boort president Kane Arnold was delighted with the turnout to witness action under lights.

“It’s been fantastic,” Arnold said.

People began arriving from mid-afternoon to watch junior teams in action before the

league’s only night encounter of the season started.

There were strong wins in the under 17 and reserves football for Boort but the seniors, although often competitive, were unable to match Wycheproof Narraport’s strength and skills, particularly as the ground became more slippery with night dew.

The Magpies did have a strong win in A Grade netball, setting up their top-of-the-table clash this weekend against Wedderburn in the Loddon Derby at Donaldson Park.

The Boort’s men’s hockey team finished up 3-0
