Des officially retired last Friday after 41 years working and later managing the local properties owned by Bosistos where leaves from trees growing on more than 1500 hectares are harvested for distillation and oil production.

He said the love of the outdoors had made the job all the more enjoyable, often working alone during tough years of drought.

“I just love it out here - nature, the birds, the atmosphere,” Des said as he prepared for retirement.

Bosistos’ chief executive officer Henry Minson said Des had been an important part of the company’s evolving operations, training and schooling staff in cutting and distilling.

UNDRAISING has become a greater challenge for local community organisations since COVID put a dent in events and activities.

A few weeks ago we were pretty pleased to include in one of our stories the amazing effort of Boort grandmother Marj Potter who sold raffle tickets in the main street in support of the local (now thrice-postponed) debutante ball.

And it has come to our attention that across the plains and hills in Wedderburn, the local football and netball clubs have been inspired by their own local paper (aka, yes the Loddon Herald) to raise money for their end-of-year trip.

Architects get to design school’s new play space A BENDIGO architectural company has been appointed to design a new play space at Pyramid Hill College.

The new space will be funded by a $234,125 State Government allocation to the college.

Member for Northern Victoria Mark Gepp said E Plus Architecture would design works that would include new play equipment and a rubber soft-fall surface to create an inclusive, accessible, safe and engaging play space for students.

The company has designed projects including the Pyramid Hill Community Centre, Red Cliffs Secondary College and

BTEC in Bendigo. Mr Gepp said this year’s Victorian Budget was investing $20 million in the Minor Capital Works Fund to improve learning spaces as well as the condition and character of schools.

“Schools have been allocated funding to fast-track priority projects under the Minor Capital Works Fund to improve learning environments as well as the condition and character of schools,” he said.

“Pyramid Hill families are a step closer to getting the great local school facilities their kids need to thrive with the appointment of E Plus Architecture.”

Drilling confirms ‘western limb’ A WESTERN limb has been confirmed in drilling at Catalyst Metals’ Four Eagles Boyd’s Dam site.

The company reported this week that diamond drilling continued at Four Eagles with the objective of gaining a better understanding of the broader structures that control gold mineralisation.

It said decent diamond drilling has confirmed the presence of a western limb feeder structure which often contains high grade gold mineralisation as indicated

by the presence of visible gold.

“Gold has been shown to be present on the western limb feeder structure as well as on the flatter west dipping zones in the east limb of the host anticline.”

The company also reported on mineral processing and metallurgical testing on a composite sample from Boyd’s Dam primary mineralisation at of 100 metres beneath the oxide zone.

Catalyst has also lodged State Government tenders for exploration blocks in the region.

GRAIN OFF RAILS

WORKERS have spent more than two days repairing tracks after a grain train derailment at Mitiamo.

Coaches replaced two services on the Swan Hill line following an incident early Thursday morning.

The incident occurred on the freight siding tracks but the train was blocking the main line used

by Swan Hill passenger services.

“We thank Swan Hill line and Eaglehawk passengers for their patience while we worked to

get them where they needed to go following disruptions to their services on Thursday,” a V/Line spokesperson said.

“Safety is our number one priority. We take all incidents seriously and will complete a full investigation into the incident at Mitiamo.”

The 6.55am train from Swan Hill to Southern Cross and the 7.40am train from Southern Cross to Swan Hill were replaced by coaches for the entire journey.

The 5.35am and 6.19am trains from Eaglehawk to Southern Cross originated at Bendigo with

alternate transport arranged for Eaglehawk passengers.

The freight train was moved back into the siding later Thursday morning and it was confirmed there was no damage to the main running line.

The track within the siding that was damaged is being repaired.

The Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator was advised of the incident and no injuries were reported.

Rams sell online TERRICK West Poll Stud achieved one of the highest prices in last week’s online Australian Sheep and Wool Show ram auction. The son of a well performing TW stud ewe sold for the auction’s second top price of $6000 while a second lot from the Loddon stud sold for $4250. The highest price paid was $7500 for a ram from Armidale, NSW.

Census night RESIDENTS across the Loddon are preparing for the Australian Census. Officially, next Tuesday is Census Night but for people who know where they will be on the night, the census can be completed online now.

Most households will have received instructions in the mail to complete the Census online.. The census is conducted every five years.

New teachers DR CHRISTOPHER Allen has been appointed mathematics teacher at Boort District School. Pauline Ugle has also commenced as the school’s mental health practitioner.

Rain behind lift in Loddon allocation THE Loddon system’s seasonal determination has been increased to 59 per cent, Northern Victoria resource manager Mark Bailey announced on Monday.

The lift takes the Loddon’s allocation from 37 per cent to 59 per cent of high-reliability water shares.

Dr Bailey said rainfall on wet catchments led to the increases.

“The catchments in all systems are wet and responding strongly to rainfall,” Dr Bailey said.

“Rain since the last assessment has in-

creased the flow of water into the rivers and creeks across the region, adding to the volumes in the major storages and making more water available for allocation.”

Dr Bailey said the latest Bureau of Meteorology seasonal outlook favours aboveaverage rainfall across the catchment areas for the three-month period from August to October.

“The BoM has confirmed that a negative Indian Ocean Dipole is underway, which increases the likelihood of above-average rainfall totals in south-east Australia,” he said.

Other determinations announced saw the Murray system move from 31 per cent to 46 per cent, the Goulburn from 37 per cent to 59 per cent, the Campaspe from 23 per cent to 59 per cent and the Broken from eight per cent to 67 per cent.

Dr Bailey said the volume currently committed to the Murray is 190GL, meaning trade from the Goulburn, Broken, Campaspe and Loddon systems to the Victorian Murray system, NSW and South Australia is closed The next seasonal determination will be announced in a fortnight.

Review starts BRIDGEWATER Primary School this week commenced its four-yearly review that will include a panel day to begin development of a strategic plan for the next four years.

Reference group NORTHERN District Community Health is forming a community advisory committee for its service area that includes Boort and Pyramid Hill. Applications close on Monday.

Survey gives bigger tick for services LODDON residents have given the shire an improved rating in the latest satisfaction survey released on Tuesday.

The shire’s overall rating has lifted two points to 63, above the state and small council averages.

Individual assessment areas saw the council also improve on 2020 or be within one of the previous customer rating.

The survey reported that Loddon was performing significantly higher for community decisions, waste management and lobbying when compared with other parts of Victoria.

It also rated highly for management of unsealed roads.

Two areas where council was marked down against state and small rural councils were sealed roads and local streets and footpaths.

The Local Government Community Satisfaction Survey, conducted by JWS Research, collected responses from 400 residents in Loddon on a range of council services.

With a score of 74, council’s customer service also rated above the state average (70) and

the average for small rural councils (69).

Waste management scored 73, compared with 69 in 2020.

Other top-performing areas according to residents are appearance of public areas (75), recreational facilities (71), emergency and disaster management (70) and elderly support services (70).

Mayor Neil Beattie said that at 61, council’s community decisions also rated higher than the state and small rural council average of 56.

“While improving on last year’s ratings, the survey also revealed that residents perceive more work needs to be done to improve the condition of our roads,” he said. “This includes sealed roads (50, up from 47) and unsealed roads (48, up from 44).”

Cr Beattie said. “Having mentioned satisfaction with the sealed roads network, it should be noted that the majority of traffic within the shire travel on state roads not council roads, “That said, council is continually striving to ensure more work is done on our roads,” Cr Beattie said.

WORK UPDATE

Coffee cheers are back LAST week’s lifting of Lockdown 5.0 brought cheer to Loddon coffee shops and cafes.

After another stint being restricted to takeaways only, local small businesses were again able to welcome sit-down customers.

Among them was the Odd Cup in Wedderburn where Lorna Nuovo and her staff (above) raised both a smile and a cup as the business enters its second month of trading, opening only four weeks ago.

And the end of Lockdown 5.0 was also the cue for Inglewood’s Charlie Ross (left) to open his new coffee business last week.

Charlie has spent the last five years renovating and restoring the William Landry shops built after the town’s great fire of 1862.

The building been been home to a barrister, a bootmaker, a jeweller and a greengrocer and now boasts its own barista Charlie. “It’s been a full renovation and I hope the takeaway coffee shop will add to the town,” Charlie said as he sipped a coffee in front of the equally warming open fire.

LODDON Shire Council this week released an update on works being undertaken in local communities. n Kerb and channel and footpath in High Street in Wedderburn are now complete. The works, which took place from near the 24 Karat Café and Wedderburn Produce and Garden store to the police station corner, included new footpath, kerb and channel, underground drainage and landscaping. n Kerb and channelling and associated works start this week on Lake View and Andrews Street in Boort.

The works are anticipated to be completed by October. n Works to extend the wide seal of LaanecoorieNewbridge road for about 3km are expected to begin this week. n Upgrade works at the Wedderburn Pioneer Caravan Park, Pyramid Hill Caravan Park and Boort Lakes Holiday Park are nearing completion. The works have included road and drainage works, powerhead upgrades, solar lighting and new amenities blocks.

The final part of the project will be upgrades to three cabins at the Wedderburn Pioneer Caravan Park. n Building of new femalefriendly change rooms at the Bridgewater Recreation Reserve is expected to be completed in October.

Queen of community contributions JOAN STEEL AFSM 1935-2021

Joan Steel AFSM

JOAN was the eldest child and only daughter of James (Jim) and Margaret (Marge) Martin and sister of Bill and Colin.

Although her birth name was Mary, Joan was always called Joan.

She was raised on the family farm at Salisbury West, attended school at Salisbury West State School until Grade 8 before completing a further two years as a boarder at St Mary’s College in Bendigo (now Catherine McAuley College).

After finishing school, Joan worked as a telephonist at the Inglewood Post Office for five years and then at Wedderburn Post Office in the same role.

On 19 January, 1956, Joan married the love of her life, Stewart Steel, setting up home with him in Wedderburn. They

OBITUARY had four children – Raymond (deceased), Michael, Jan, and Cathy, all born at Korong Bush Nursing Hospital. She was the proud grandmother of six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, always interested in their lives and making the effort to maintain close contact with them - wherever they were around the world.

Joan took an active role in supporting Stewart to run their farm at Wedderburn Junction and Glenalbyn, while at the same time sustaining a keen interest and active involvement in the local community. She lost her soulmate when Stewart died suddenly on 29 November, 1991, aged 63.

Joan was a competitive sportswoman,

playing tennis for St Mary’s, netball for Inglewood and Wedderburn along with golf and bowls for Wedderburn.

She became a member of the Inglewood Netball Club team shortly after the competition’s inauguration in the early 1950s. Not only was Joan remembered as a skilled and strong competitor, she also captained the team during 1955 and 1956 when they were undefeated for 2½ seasons. Joan also actively contributed off court taking on various league and club executive roles during that time.

Joan was also a passionate and vocal supporter who enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren play sport and giving them some enthusiastic ‘coaching’ tips from the sidelines when she thought they could benefit from some improvement in their game. Her passion extended at times to a touch of ‘white line fever’, with umpires being told on occasions how to do their job. Joan had the distinction of being given a one-week suspension during her playing career at Inglewood Netball Club during a game against Newbridge. Her account of the story was that the team captain had to take full responsibility for any individual team member’s behaviour - therefore she was required to take the penalty for an on-court incident.

Joan was a valued member of the congregation of Wedderburn Catholic Church, taking an active role in church activities and assisting with cleaning and maintenance of the church. She was saddened when diminishing numbers recently led to the decision to close her beloved church but happily embraced attending services at the Wedderburn Anglican Church.

Joan’s proactive contribution to the community was first marked when she won the Queen competition for the most money raised to build the Inglewood swimming pool. She continued her involvement in numerous organisations throughout the Wedderburn community for the rest of her life.

Joan was a tireless worker and proud supporter of the Wedderburn Football Club, regularly attending football matches until shortly before she died. She was president of the Wedderburn football ladies’ catering committee for eight years.

Both she and Stewart were jointly awarded life membership of Wedderburn Football Club in 1982.

Joan’s forte was her love of cooking which she put to great use at the Wedderburn Community House. Several years ago she was honoured with a life membership after many years of dedicated service. She was co-ordinator of Food Bank until 2020.

Since the early 1990s, Joan volunteered for St Vincent De Paul and was the local contact for assisting people in need.

Joan was a life member of the Country Fire Authority, serving as a volunteer for an incredible 45 years. Joan was presented with the CFA Outstanding Service Medal, National Medal for Service and Forty-Year Service Medal. The greatest honour of all was when she was presented with the Australian Fire Service Medal by the Governor General in 2012.

Joan was recognised for her exceptional service to the local community on Australia Day 2005 when she was awarded the Loddon Shire Citizen of the Year.

Despite the numerous awards and accolades, Joan remained modest and humble, not wanting a fuss or to impose on anybody.

MEMBER for Mallee Anne Webster has been formally pre-selected as the Nationals’ candidate for the next federal election.

Dr Webster was elected as the local federal MP in 2019, succeeding Andrew Broad who retired from Parliament. She was the only nomination for pre-selection.

Dr Webster said more health care staff, affordable energy and a strengthened horticulture workforce were key issues for the next election due by May 2022.

A STUDENT’S LIFE DURING LOCKDOWN REMOTE LEARNING

Zooming out of bed for lessons

By JAKE MURPHY IF someone had told me two years ago that most of my schooling throughout the years of 2020 and 2021 would be forced online by a global pandemic, I would have laughed at them.

However, as we all know, 2020 and our year so far have been anything but normal; bringing in the existence of a new phrase “COVID Normal”.

For the world of education, COVID Normal has become a jumping game between on-site and remote learning.

In the last two weeks, schools all across Victoria emerged from the latest lockdown and stint of online learning, a bitter reminder that despite massive amounts of effort, we are still not beating this virus.

Although the effects on country Victoria are not felt as hard as those in the city, students in the regional areas of our state are finding the increasing number of lockdowns and the subsequent shifts in and out of remote learning more and more difficult to cope with.

Local schools across the Loddon have become accustomed to online meeting areas such as WebEx or Zoom, no doubt many of you will have too.

Our classes are run essentially as they would be if we were there in person; beginning with

Councillors last week approved the allocations and endorsed a new policy that will see future increased, based on the rate cap rises applied to local government by the Victorian Government.

Allocation increases had been previously guided by CPI. In determining hall and reserve committee allocations, the formula includes location and size of community.

Councillors were told active facilities were reviewed annually. Boort Gun Club has not been given an allocation in 2021-2022 as it is inactive.

Jumping between ‘remote learning’ and on-site provides instability in the classroom, a disruption that impacts the flow of work and progress.

“It is also an innovative solution to ensure major events, both in metropolitan and regional areas, can proceed with little disruption to patron caps.

“Lockdowns should only ever be used as a last resort. There are a lot of other steps government should be putting in place to avoid snap lockdowns like the one we have just endured.

“Businesses and our communities are crying out for a plan. We need a pathway out of constant lockdowns and rapid testing is an obvious part of that plan to get us back to some normality.”

TELSTRA this week announced free calls could be made from its public phone box network.

In the past year, about 11 million calls were made across Australia from Telstra payphones. This included more than 230,000 calls to critical services including 000 and Lifeline.

The telco said the free call move would be a crucial service, particularly in rural areas.

By gum, it’s been fun

DES Lamprell has been right at home for more than 40 years cutting eucalyptus leaves and distilling oil.

He even cut and distilled a vat of leaves to pay for his honeymoon when marrying wife Marlene 46 years ago, reaping the then princely sum of $300.

“It was back in 1980, I was working in the flour mill but the dust was no good for my health and would have died if I had stayed there,” Des said.

“This job came up (at Bosistos) harvesting and distilling eucalyptus leaves, I applied and got it. There was fresh air and open spaces ... birds and nature ... and tractors, too.”

Des was glad to be working outdoors and for many years he was the only employee working the Inglewood and Glenalbyn areas for Bosistos.

Bosistos’ CEO Henry Minson said: “My father-in-law Peter Abbott, who owns the business, was

“Des would distil two bins in the morning and cut in the afternoon,” he said. “He had a rhythm and it worked.”

Henry says Des would have a two-year cycle moving between the sites where the company had a licence to cut in the forests.

“He did it very well, enjoying the solitude and effectively being his own boss.

“As the operation evolved, Des has had a bigger part in training and schooling staff - his son Leigh who came to us about seven years ago and other staff.

“Des has skilled them in the art of harvesting eucalyptus leaves, distilling and managing the boiler.

“He’s very knowledgeable and has been very helpful.”

The growth of the eucalyptus oil industry saw Des have a local workforce of six when he retired last week.

The FGB company that includes Bosistos now has 1500 hectares under plantation where more than four million blue Mallee trees have been planted.

The skills Des has learned and shared over four decades have seen him become an industry icon and featured on rural television programs.

It’s a far cry from “jack of all trades” tag he says he had before the “life saving” job come up.

“When I left school, I worked for a grocery shop and would ride a bicycle making deliveries, I’ve carted water, was at the flour mill, picked tomatoes, worked for the shire for a while,” Des said.

“But I’ve loved being here cutting and distilling leaves. The area has been harvested for well over 100 years years.”

Retirement will mean time to begin tinkering more with his collection of tractors and agricultural machinery.

“I’ve got more than 100 although a lot of them don’t go,” he said.

And he is also an active member of Inglewood Historical Society.

Des and Marlene know the family tradition in the eucalyptus industry will be continued by son Leigh who takes on the role of farm manager.

“I’ll still pop by and perhaps do some casual work still,” Des said.

By LOUISE STALEY CONGRATULATIONS to the Loddon Herald on its first six months of providing local news to the communities of the Loddon Shire.

It has been a difficult six months for any business. It is marvellous to see a local newspaper thriving in uncertain times.

It feels a lot like deja vu in regional Victoria at the moment.

We have just come out of our fifth harsh lockdown, only to enter an uncertain period of ongoing restrictions.

I have heard from many Ripon locals who are sick and tired of Daniel Andrews imposing the same restrictions in Regional Victoria as Melbourne.

It may come as a surprise to the Melbourne-centric Labor Government, but we don’t all live in Melbourne, and there are hundreds of thousands of Victorians who are being ignored.

The Liberal Nationals have repeatedly called on the Andrews Government to use targeted lockdowns as a last resort.

There are many communities across Ripon where there has never been a case of COVID-19.

The government must weigh up the risks against the unden-

PERSPECTIVE iable toll that lockdowns take on mental health, children missing months of school and businesses desperately trying to survive.

The Delta strain of COVID-19 is spreading in New South Wales, and cases coming over the border sparked our latest lockdown.

The Andrew Labor Government needs to do everything possible to protect Victorians.

So far, they have failed to use rapid testing, which could play a crucial role in ensuring no new cases come to Victoria.

It is frustrating to see the government continue to overlook essential tools in the fight against COVID-19 while rushing to lock down communities across the state.

There have been so many disappointments during this pandemic, and we continue to see much-loved community events cancelled. The Australian Sheep and Wool Show had to be cancelled for the second year running, and we’ve now heard that the Melbourne Show has been shelved again this year. Add to this the countless footy club functions, religious celebrations and community events cancelled

during Victoria’s five lockdowns.

These events bring communities together, give people something to look forward to and help fight the isolation and loneliness that many in our communities face.

While this pandemic and the Andrews Labor Government’s constant lockdowns have taken a toll, I know that the communities in the Loddon Shire will continue to pull together to overcome the challenges we all face.

The number one thing we can all do to support local businesses is to spend money with them.

If you need something, try to shop locally instead of supporting big online retailers.

While we cannot visit anybody at home, we can catch up with friends and families at local cafes and restaurants. With ongoing restrictions, many businesses will be struggling to make ends meet, and your support will go a long way. Data helps understand community needs Census night is Tuesday 10 August 2021 – and it’s important that everyone is ready for the Census so that we’re all counted.

Every five years, the Census counts every person and home in Australia. The Census asks questions about things like your age, country of birth, ancestry, language used at home, work and education.

Entries are now open for the Loddon Shire’s Australia Day 2022 competitions with this year’s topic My Town. There are again three sections - Photography (Junior Prep to Year 6, Secondary Year 7 to Year 12 and Open), Literature (Junior and Secondary) and Colouring (Prep to Year 12).

The competitions are open to all residents of the Loddon Shire.

Entries are free and winners will receive $20.

Irrigators can expect good season: GMW THE Goulburn Murray Water 2021-2022 irrigation season opens next week.

GMW Water delivery services general manager Warren Blyth said good winter rainfall and early seasonal determinations, as well as a large amount of water being carried over in most systems would provide for a strong irrigation season.

“The outlook for 20212022 water availability is looking promising with the catchments generating good flows into the storages at present,” he said.

With the winter works program finishing next week, GMW will charge the channel system in all irrigation areas to ensure water is available to deliver from August 15.

Irrigators can go to WaterLINE, the 24-hour online and telephone water ordering system to order water from August 12, find out their allocation balance and manage their accounts.

“Customers are able to self-manage their orders and usage, and have access to a water planner 24 hours a day, seven days a week, during the irrigation season,” Mr Blyth said.

Trials plotting canola yield and grazing GRAZING and fertiliser trials across the Loddon are mapping yield and dual use of canola crops.

Grazing and nitrogen canola trials across the Loddon are currently underway, exploring the ability to use canola as a dual purpose crop and understand yield impact.

Farm services consultant David Smyth is overseeing trials at Serpentine, Bridgewater, Derby and Newbridge for seed company Pioneer.

The Bridgewater and Serpentine sites were planted in March and April for grazing trials.

“The Bridgewater planting was about a month earlier than normal for grain crops in the area.

The hybrid selected for both sites are suited to irrigation or high rainfall zones,” David said.

“The trial allows us to monitor grazing and the re-establishment of biomass and follow the crop through to grain harvest, to understand if there is a yield impact to grazing.

“At the moment, trials are

showing that lambs on the grazed canola crops are gaining 300 grams a head each day.”

David said ewes and lambs had been used for grazing with indications they were better conditioned.

“And there’s then a flow-on with better lambing rates. It has been a real positive so far,” he said.

David said moisture and fertiliser application post-grazing was critical to re-establishing crop biomass.

“The Yield Max trial helps develop understanding of nitrogen requirements in the area to maximise yield and profit” he said.

“Some trials in South Australia and Western Australia has seen a lift in yield from around two tonnes a hectare up to more than three tonnes.

“Canola is a huge crop across the Loddon and from these trials we hope that the products that are always being refined by Pioneer are able to help local farmers improve yield and income.”

The benefits of late autumn/

Trial plots in the Loddon assessing grazing and re-growth. early winter grazing are significant, but it is important to get early crop growth and re-growth following grazing, to ensure there is limited impact on crop yields.

“We’re into the third year of local trials and the results continue to show that using up to

300kg of urea in post-grazing treatment of the land is playing a key role in crop regrowth,” David said.

“The positives are being seen that with the right timing and application, paddocks have time to re-establish and contribute to a decent yield of canola.”

SHEEP MARKET FEW more numbers were penned at Bendigo this week in a plainer yarding of lambs, with less heavy grain assisted types available.

All the regular buyers attended although not all operated fully in another dearer market.

The strongest bidding came from domestic processors who sometimes pushed up into heavier weights of 28kg cwt.

It was heavier lambs that recorded the best price gains of the sale, with the hot spots of the auction being the 24 to 26kg and 26 to 30kg cwt crossbred categories which showed rises of more than $30/ head on a week ago.

The supply of export lambs over 30kg cwt dropped away to a few pens which made from $290 to a top of $325/head.

Heavy lambs consistently made from $240 to $285/head, for estimated carcase averages of 940c to 980c/kg cwt. Select

pens did make over 1,000c/kg cwt at times. The availability of neat domestic lambs was again tight, with the best pens in the 22 to 24kg category selling from $228 to $258/head.

Plainer and lighter lambs ranged mostly from $140 to $175/head to processors, with only limited sales to restockers and feedlots.

Grain assisted Merino lambs sold from $225 to a top of $258/head and were trending above 900c/kg cwt. However, the majority of Merinos in the yarding were light types lacking fat cover which mostly ranged from $126 to $158/head.

Only a few pens of new season young lambs were yarded and sold to a top of $225/head.

It was a very dear mutton sale with estimated carcase prices among the highest Bendigo has recorded.

There was 8000 sheep yarded, with

more lines of Merino wethers coming out this week alongside a good run of heavy crossbred and Merino ewes. Prices lifted by $10 to $20/head, with quality lines of Merino wethers and some ewes selling above 800c/kg cwt at times. Light sheep also sold exceptionally well.

When prices for the various quality sheep were blended together an average run of mutton was costing buyers from 700c to 780c/kg cwt.

A lot of heavy sheep made from $220 to $270, while at the other end of the scale very few very plain and light ewes sold for less than $140/head.

Handyman with the skills ANDREW O’NEILL is glad to be back out helping people across the Loddon with their handyman tasks.

Lockdown had put a hold on some of Andrew’s jobs whether in his home town of Pyramid Hill or Boort and other towns in the region.

The former plasterer of 30 years has been running his handyman business for the past 12 years and says he gets to meet a lot of good people “doing something different every day”.

“One day it could be painting, the next doing a deck or general repairs around homes. Doors and windows always crop up, especially in the drier months,” Andrew said.

“I love using all the general skills I have gained over the years but you still

Crash stalls drive to title RHIANON Gelsomino and Travis Pastrana still hold a strong lead in the American Rally Association championship despite heartbreak at the weekend.

The pair crashed in the weekend’s New England rally, 7km from the finish as they led by nine seconds.

“It’s not the way we wanted the New England Forest Rally to end,” Rhianon said.

“Hugely disappointed for the team Subaru Motorsports USA Vermont SportsCar and ourselves.

“We worked really hard to win this event and to lose it so close to the finish is tough.

“We are both okay and we still hold a strong championship lead with four rounds remaining.”

The next round of the championship is the Ojibwe Forests Rally, Minnnesota, in three weeks.

Skill errors on show in the Loddon Derby THE opening minutes of Saturday’s North Central league Loddon Derby between Boort and Wedderburn were frenetic and pressured.

Boort, in what has turned out to be one of their few home games of the COVID-interrupted season, made the most of play and turnovers.

They put pressure on the undefeated Redbacks who were terribly inaccurate in front of goal.

It wasn’t until late in the final term that Wedderburn gained ascendancy.

For the next two quarters, the Redbacks were ahead in play and on the scoreboard thanks to the consistent duo of Corey Lowry and Jordan Rosengren.

The Pies did lift again in the final term when both sides scored 2.2 but the visitors ended 24

points up at the final siren and now steel themselves for Saturday’s clash against Donald.

Wedderburn co-coach Danny Benaim said: “The game was a bit scrappy but we expected that after some time off and no training. We were a bit inaccurate in front of goals early which kept the scoreboard close.

“To their credit Boort kept coming but our mids got on top and we felt in control of the game.”

Benaim said Will Holt would likely return from suspension this week and “we still have a couple of others out at the moment also who will make their way back over the next week or two.”

Boort coach Andrew Hawker said he was pretty disappointed with the team’s showing on Saturday.

“I thought we had our chances but skill errors let us down quite badly at times,” he said.

“However on the positives, we have made enormous steps forward and now have a base and after now playing 10 games together as a group we are starting to play a much better style.

“Our lateral ball movement has improved enormously over the last three games but with so many stops in the year it has been very hard to build both fitness and get some continuity of process.

“Sea Lake this Saturday will obviously be a huge challenge but also one we look forward to.

“They were very well structured last time we met and it will be a great test to see if we can find a way through their defence. I am really looking forward to it,” Hawker said.

They play Maiden Gully this week followed by Pyramid Hill in the final scheduled round of the season - fifth facing off against the teams immediately above and below them on the ladder.

A win this week could give Serp some momentum heading into finals and will certainly shape whether they progress to the second week of finals.

Pyramid Hill meets Bridgewater, the Mean Machine winning their last fiery encounter, one looks like it popped the Bulldog bubble.

While still depleted with injuries, and a suspension or two from that earlier meeting, Bridgewater should lock in second spot on the ladder.

Talking of locking in positions, the undefeated Mitiamo continue their stop-start season with a bye before meeting Bridgewater in the final round.

It will be just three games in seven weeks due to abandoned rounds and byes when the Superoos play their first final.

CHANCES of Boort notching up a possible seasonfinishing win are quickly evaporating with Wycheproof Narrapoort abandoning all games until crowds can return.

The Demons forfeited their North Central league football matches against Sea Lake Nandaly last Saturday and will not travel to Charlton this weekend.

Boort is scheduled to play Wycheproof on August 14, but any State Government announcement on country sport crowds is not due until next Tuesday.

Demons’ president Mark McLennan said the club committee had taken a vote.

“A few weren’t for it (forfeiting games) but it was democratic,” McLennan said. “It’s still only a sport.”

McLennan said that without crowds, games would be run at a loss.

“We have to think of the impact also on people raising the money for our club,” he said.

“I don’t think our view would have changed if we had a different ladder position.”

The Demons sit on the bottom of the North Central ladder, not having won a game this season.

McLennan said it had been a tough season for the Demons with COVID interruptions and a failed merger bid with Charlton.

“It’s not a crisis or the end of our club. We are certainly looking to 2022,” he said.

Boort had a five-point win over the Demons when they met in round four. COVID restrictions have already seen the Pies miss hosting three games.

The Redbacks broke away from Boort after quarter time on Saturday in their Loddon Derby match.

When the ladder leaders clashed coming out of Lockdown 4.0 in June, the Redbacks finished three goals up. The re-

sumption of play last weekend after Lockdown 5.0 saw the Pies go down by seven goals.

Redbacks’ coach Meg Lockhart said: “It was a good game ... tough all the way.”

“We both kept persisting and we’re with no doubt that there’ll be very close games again when we meet in the finals,” Meg said.

ney Gleeson were among key players for the Redbacks along with Olivia Lockhart at wing defence who was vital in achieving strong turnovers.

Boort had goal scorer Steph Haw as a key focus of their game, keeping the Pies in touch with constant passes.

After an even first quarter, the Redbacks moved five ahead

by half-time and extended their lead to 14 goals at the final break.

The tenacity of Boort was to the fore in a high-pressure final quarter when they cut the scoreboard difference.

For the Redbacks, firmly installed now as flag favourites with two rounds before finals, Meg says: “It’s not going to be easy. We have to keep persisting.”
