Leonie’s love for country, cricket and horses LEONIE Pollock has been a women’s cricket trailblazer but always most at home in the country where farming and horses have been a big part of her life.

The Inglewood and Districts Health Service resident was a member of the Women’s Land Army during World War Two and next Thursday turns 100.

She will likely receive a letter of congratulations from the Queen who Leonie says is a wonderful woman and was applauded by the farmer’s wife from Derby on the back of a truck in Bendigo when the Queen became the first ruling monarch to visit Australia in 1954.

LeonIe is a favourite with staff at IDHS where she has lived since 2020.

HAT’S happened to the names of racehorses? In this week of the Melbourne Cup - a final chance at an extra long weekend for some - we’ve noticed elongated names like Tuesday’s big winner Verry Elleegant rewriting the dictionary or designer creations not easy to decipher at first glance, the latter perhaps more like one of the word scramble puzzles that must surely create linguistic hurdles for the racecallers ... and completely confusing spell check when it’s run over the race fields.

HEN it comes to Melbourne Cup confusion, consider that in 1865, Adam Lindsay Gordon wrote a verse in which the Melbourne Cup winner was called Tim Whiffler.

Two years later in 1867 two horses with the name Tim Whiffler ran in the Melbourne Cup. (The year before in 1866 two horses with the same name, Falcon, also ran in the Melbourne Cup.) To distinguish between the two Tim Whifflers they were called “Sydney” Tim Whiffler and “Melbourne” Tim Whiffler. “Sydney” Tim Whiffler actually won the Cup.

he race’s history contains many extraordinary personal stories. One that appealed to the Gothic sensibilities of those 19th century race-followers who so impressed Twain was the outré tale of the 1870 Cup. Months before the race, Ballarat publican Walter Craig had a dream that he watched his own horse, Nimblefoot, win the Cup, but he noticed his jockey was wearing a black armband. Craig’s premonition was that his horse would win the Cup, but that he would not live to see it. Craig’s horse Nimblefoot won the cup, with the jockey wearing a black crepe armband to mourn Walter Craig who, just as he had dreamed, died before the race.

UESDAY’S cup crowd was only 10,000 people with COVID restrictions still applying

to big events. The crowd at the first cup back in 1861 was a measly 4000. Nowadays, more than 100,000 people would usually attend Flemington Racecourse. The highest ever recorded attendance was in 2003 when the number reached 122,736.

LL this talk about the Melbourne Cup has had us looking into some local history when its comes to the sport of kings. At Inglewood in 1876, the races had some interesting names. In the Forced Handicap, Alfred and Castoff made a dead heat, and divided the stakes instead of running again. At Weddderburn in 1916, a race meeting was held in fine weather “until a strong cold wind throughout the afternoon raised clouds of dust at .times, thus making the conditions disagreeable”.

T’S unlikely windy weather would have made any difference at the Melbourne Cup Spring Carnival back in 1965 though. British model Jean Shrimpton donned a miniskirt much to the shock of the crowds, not to mention no hat, gloves or stockings. Older readers will remember the Shrimp caused a real storm with her wee outfit.

From fencepost to the sky A SMALL convocation of wedgetailed eagles soon returned to the skies after they were spotted each occupying a fencepost between Newbridge and Bridgewater on Saturday afternoon.

The four eagles, including a young avian aviator in training, soared high above paddocks of grain and sheep after their fencetop rest time was curtailed.

Their tawny nape hackles and pale brown wing coverts glistened in the afternoon sun and wingspans up to 210cm were fully stretched in gliding mode.

Wedge-tail eagles are often spotted throughout the Loddon and are one of the local birds including in Wedderburn’s main street bird murals.

THE rollout of COVID vaccine booster shots will start this month.

Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisations has given the tick to boosters six months after people have received their second dose.

Aged care and disability workers will be at the front of the queue.

Approval for boosters comes as Boort Community Pharmacy extends its offering of COVID vaccines from next week.

“This means we will have the whole suite of vaccines - Pfizer, Astra Zeneca and Moderna,” said pharmacist Daniel Snyder. “We

have had a positive response from the community with these vaccines and I trust this will continue into the future with the approval from ATAGI for the third dose for all individuals.”

The latest announcements come as the Loddon Shire edges closer to 90 per cent fully vacci-

nated after reaching 95 per cent first dose last week.

And with the further easing of restrictions, Inglewood and Districts Health Service yesterday welcomed hospital visitors for the first time since March.

Visiting hours will be 1pm to 4pm seven days a week with

visits to residents either in their rooms or an outdoor area.

The Melbourne Cup long weekend also saw steady streams of traffic on Loddon roads as metropolitan residents were again allowed to visit country Victoria.

Accommodation was at a premium in Calder Highway towns and also at Boort. Pyramid Hill residents said there was a stream of visitors over the weekend at their famous hill.

Victoria is expected to have more than 90 per cent of people aged over 12 fully vaccinated this month when restrictions will further ease.

Patrick says he first made vanilla slices as an apprentice 20 years ago and has seen his own recipe skyrocket in popularity since opening in Bridgewater a decade ago.

Bridgewater Bakehouse remains the undefeated Vanilla Slice Triumph champion but he says the wotif award announced last week is an equal accolade “coming from the people who travel Australia and grab a bite to eat here in the Loddon”.

And the recipe that has made Patrick a champion is now skilfully used every day by his staff as they bake the nation’s best vanilla slice under his guidance.

“People love our pies, The vanilla slice is the icing on the cake,” he said.

IN BRIEF Early fires LODDON fire brigade volunteers have had early callouts as temperatures hovered in the mid to high 20s in recent days. The largest fire was at Pompapiel on Tuesday. Volunteers from Pyramid Hill, Serpentine, Dingee-Tandara, Yarrawalla, Mitiamo and Jarklin brigades battled the two-hectare fire that destroyed a shed on the Durham Ox-Raywood road. The fire started when after an early extinguished burn-off reignited about 3pm.

Spooky night FROM Boort to Bridgewater, Loddon towns were in the Halloween spirit on Sunday night. There were houses decorated in spooky themes while children went trick or treating. At Bridgewater caravan park, a special Halloween movie night was held for campers.

Community centre PHIL Hercus has been confirmed as chairman of East Loddon Community Centre.

Loddon Shire Council last week also confirmed Carly Noble (deputy chair), Nick Marlow (secretary-treasurer), Linden Barry and Heather Atkinson (booking officer) as members of the community asset committee.

Pub shut DINGEE’S Railway Hotel has been shut for the past week.

Readers have told the Loddon Herald that the hotel licensees have decided to close the hotel. The licensees were unable to be to contacted.

ST PATRICK’S Primary School Pyramid Hill has achieved its goal of collecting 300 material bags for a school in the Philippines to support their ‘Uber learning’ program. The school collected a total of 307 bags with donations from clubs, businesses and the community.

Final seat call turns Ripon ‘notional Labor’ ALMOST one million Victorians will vote in a different electorate at next November’s state election but boundary changes will not affect Loddon communities.

Electoral Boundaries Commission last Thursday released the new electorate maps that see Murray Plains held by Peter Walsh (Nationals) and Bendigo East with Jacinta Allan (Labor) as the member unchanged, However, the commission adjusted its draft boundaries released in June for Ripon held by Liberal frontbencher Louise Staley on a wafer-thin margin.

In his analysis of the final boundaries, Antony Green said: “The incursion of Ripon into Ballarat’s western suburbs on the draft boundaries has been reversed.

“Ripon now gains western parts of Golden Plains Shire from Buninyong.

The change swaps a Labor voting part of Wendouree for a Labor voting part of Buninyong which means Ripon still becomes a notional Labor seat.

“At least the new areas of Ripon are a better fit with the rural nature of Ripon than Ballarat suburbs,” he said.

Donald and Charlton have been moved from Ripon into Mildura electorate.

The commission said it received 127 written and 25 verbal submissions during the draft boundary review.

The state election under new boundaries will be on November 26, 2022.

The next federal election is expected to be called before May 2022.

SES clears trees after wild storm

STATE Emergency Service volunteers were called out to clear trees felled in last Thursday’s wild storms that lashed Victoria.

Wedderburn unit members had several callouts on the Calder Highway between Charlton and Wycheproof and also on the Boort-Charlton Road and south of Rheola from late afternoon until midnight.

It was the first major incident for new unit controller Paull Gordon-Cooke who was appointed to the position last month.

His appointment marks the return of a permanent controller for the unit, previously being overseen by Marong.

cently joined the Wedderburn unit and several others had expressed an interest in donning the orange overalls to be trained in assisting emergency responses by the unit over a large area of the Loddon.

Last Thursday’s storm also knocked out power supplies in the Newbridge and Tarnagulla districts from about 4pm.

Powercor worked through the night with supplies restored about 10am Friday. More than 15mm of rain was recorded last Thursday and Friday.

Pullen’s health role doubles up GREG Pullen on Monday expanded his interim role in Loddon health services.

Mr Pullen, who has been interim chief executive office at Inglewood and Districts Health Service since July, has also been appointed to a similar position with Boort District Health.

Both health services are in the process of making permanent appointments.

Mr Pullen has been in the Inglewood role since the resignation of Tracey Wil-

son. Board chairman Michael Oerlemans said an appointment was expected to be made this month. He said the process was in its final stages.

Dr Darren Clarke resigned from the Boort position after five years and returned to South Australia to take up a new appointment.

The Boort position has been advertised and Mr Pullen will be in the role until the new CEO is appointed.

Detail call on town safe spots LODDON Shire Council was told last week that designated neighbourhood safe places should not give a false sense of security for people fleeing bushfires.

Cr Dan Straub said the annual review of neighbourhood safe places should include possible tourist numbers during fire season as well as local population numbers.

He told council’s monthly meeting he would like greater communication on the role of the shire’s six designated places for refuge.

Council adopted the annual review for Boort Park oval, Pyramid Hill’s Mitchell Park oval, Serpentine recreation reserve oval, the playground area at J. Sloan Park in Inglewood, grounds at Bridgewater Memorial Hall and the oval at Donaldson Park Wedderburn.

“I have reservations (the neighbourhood safer places plan) doesn’t go far enough in communication to the community on how they work,” Cr Straub said.

He did not want to see them “turn unto unsafe places”.

Mayor Neil Beattie said the six locations were places of last resort.

Volunteers chip in for new tanker BOORT Fire Brigade has taken delivery of two new appliances after local fundraising and a State Government grant.

First to arrive was a new forward command vehicle and now the brigade has received a new Iveco 4 X 4 heavy tanker.

Captain Kelvin Mayberry said the FCV would greatly improve communications and command functions for firefighters during a fire or incident.

A STRATEGIC fire break has been proposed for Inglewood .

Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning last week discussed with local residents its plans to mulch vegetation for up to eight metres from the road verge along both sides of existing tracks in the Inglewood State Forest .

Works are expected to start soon on the West Break Track and Old Reservoir Track, as well as land adjoining the Inglewood Caravan Park.

DELWP told residents: “The works are part of the strategic fuel break state-wide program that is providing one-year of funding initially to fast-track permanent fuel reduction works in priority locations.

“The works are aligned with, but a separate program to, the Joint Fuel Management Program, however works do not involve burning.” “(Works will) reduce fuel loads and improve access by firefighters to assist with the control of bushfires,” DELWP said.

Names never forgotten FIVE timber honour boards listing names of Dingee and Tandarra men and women who served Australia in war have been restored ahead of Remembrance Day 2021.

The boards at Dingee Hall will be officially unveiled next Thursday following the town’s commemorative service.

East Loddon Historical Society secretary Robyn Brown said restoration by Maldon conservator Jude Schahinger had followed a $25,000 grant under the Victorian Government’s Preserving Avenues of Honours and Memorials program.

Mary and John Davidson were instrumental in beginning the project to preserve the honour boards from World War One and World War Two. The Tandarra Red Cross board honours the names of 24 local residents who enlisted in World War One, including nurse Kate Laity.

A generation later and Tandarra Honour Roll Committee erected a board for the 18 locals who served in World War Two, again with each of their photographs.

Sun had damaged photographs in the two honour boards and all except one have been replaced or digitally restored.

Dingee hall committee president Terry Kavanagh said members had been pleased to assist in the project by removal and reinstalling the honour boards.

He said the community was fortunate to have had the Davidsons and Robyn initiate restoration.

“But it is important for our district to still remember them and the service they gave to Austral-

ia in time of war. Restoration of the honour boards has certainly been a very important project for the community.”

A booklet with information and photographs of the men and

women on the restored honour boards is also in the final stages of preparation.

Robyn said the booklet would be available at next Thursday’s unveiling.

Veterans planning services across the region COVID-SAFE commemorations will be held in Loddon communities for the 103rd anniversary of Armistice in World War One. Local RSL sub-branches have adapted usual service plans to meet current requirements.

Wedderburn-Korong Vale subbranch president Roger Patterson said the service would be the RSL clubrooms’ memorial garden.

“The commemorative service will be open to the public with all required to be fully vaccinated,” he said.

“We looked at holding the service at soldiers’ park but the open area would have made it very difficult to comply with the various regulations in place.”

The Wedderburn service will start at 10.40am with QR checkin also required.

Boort RSL sub-branch will hold a brief ceremony at the clubrooms Remembrance Wall.

President Paul Haw said the Ceremony would start at 10:45am.

“The public is welcome to attend. This is the day to remem-

ber all the fallen from the Boort Region and the sacrifice they paid,” Mr Haw said.

Inglewood-Bridgewater subbranch is organising services in the two towns.

President Michael Hobson said that to comply with current restrictions only people aged over 16 and fully vaccinated should attend.

Services at the Grant Street memorial in Inglewood and Bridgewater Memorial Hall will start at 10.50am.

Pyramid Hill commemorations will again be co-ordinated by the town’s schools.

RSL sub-branches are selling the traditional Red Poppy to raise funds for their welfare work. This year marks the centenary of the first Poppy Appeal and a special commemorative badge is being sold by volunteers and at selected businesses across the Loddon Shire.

A minute’s silence will be observed at 11am next Thursday.

Kate’s story: soldiers with severe shell-shock KATE Laity was 27 years old when she signed up for war service in 1915.

Born in Korong Vale but her family by then living at Dingee, Kate enlisted in July 1915 as the battle continued at Gallipoli She had already been nursing in Australia for six years, being promoted to sister 12 months prior to enlistment and held the role of acting matron.

After spending time nursing in England from October 1915 to January 1918, she served in France. She remained there until October 1918, weeks before the Armistice that saw guns fall silent at 11am on November 11 to end fighting in World War One. Kate understood the need to distract injured men from their suffering. The book More than Bombs and Bandages (Kirsty Harris,) said Kate noted: “We principally had to try and amuse them, to make them forget.”

Kate also wrote: “I nursed shell-shock cases, some of which were very severe.”

Research for the East Loddon Remembers project show that it was often very difficult for Kate and her fellow nurses to achieve this goal of amusement due to the sheer number of patients they had to attend to.

When Kate was working in a clearing hospital at Sutton Veny, she said there were 250 beds, yet only three attending sisters.

Sister Laity returned to Australia in 1919 aboard the ‘Norman’, still on active duty. Kate moved to Mount Martha and never married.

She lived to the age of 95 years.

Kate’s is one of the names on a restored honour board at Dingee.

New president ‘lucky to land in community’

ANDRE Bewicke has been quick to embrace the fiercely local community spirit of Pyramid Hill.

After two years in town, the former Melbourne road and rail construction worker has involved himself in local organisations and is now president of the town’s progress association.

“After spending the first six or eight months after arriving here in 2019 renovating our little place, I have been lucky to discover and become part of local organisations,” he said.

Andre has joined the local Lions Club and historical society, amazed at the collection housed in the town’s museum, its history and importance.

“There are moves to get the local men’s shed up and running again and I am doing what I can to support those efforts,” Andre said.

“The more I get to know people around town, the more I realise they are fiercely loyal to their town and there are plenty of people who have done a lot of the hard yards to push the progress of the town.

“There’s always a core of people ... but you can’t sit back and let them do all the work.”

A QUILT with the former Borough of Inglewood seal as its theme will be unveiled this month.

The quilt made by members of the Lions Club of Quilters Victoria will be on permanent display at the town hall after the launch on November 14.

Project trustee Murray Baud said: “In 2012, during the planning of the new Community Hub and Town Hall redevelopment, the committee established the Inglewood Community Arts and Heritage Fund, seeking public contributions towards an artwork or cultural piece to

complement the completed project. A quilt was commissioned, themed on the Borough of Inglewood official seal.

“The wonderful large quilt has been created by the Lions Club of Quilters Victoria, a group of ladies dedicated to their quilting craft and their vision for an Australian quilt and textile collection.

“It highlights what can be achieved when volunteers come together to work for the community.”

The Borough of Inglewood was established in 1861 and continued until 1961 when it was annexed to Korong Shire.

Axe falls on cows CATTLE have been sold for the last time at Bendigo.

Stock agents made the call just a day after just nine head were offered on Monday.

The decision ends more than 150 years of regional cattle markets in Bendigo and three months of uncertainty after weekly sales moved to fortnightly offerings.

Vealers from the Loddon topped averages at the final sale.

The announcement by Bendigo Associated Stock Agents said: “It is with great disappointment that the members of the Bendigo Agents Association wish to advice that they will no longer receive cattle at the Bendigo Livestock Exchange, effective immediately.

“This follows many years of declining throughput, making the sale no longer viable to continue.

“Despite attempts to reinvigorate the sale including a recent trial of fortnightly markets, it is in the best interest of all those who have supported the market over the last 150 years that we close it down.

“We wish to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who has supported the market, in a lot of cases on a weekly basis for decades.

“We look forward to working with the Bendigo Livestock Exchange to explore opportunities for the alternate use of the cattle selling centre, including potentially as a support to the ongoing weekly lamb and sheep sale , which remains one of the largest in the country.”

In August, the Loddon Herald published a special series of articles on the decline of cattle markets at Bendigo.

Loddon farmers had been increasingly taking their stock to Echuca or Shepparton where stronger prices have been returned in larger offerings.

Farmers also said they were selling more stock through online auctions and off the hook.

In that report, livestock market manager City of Greater Bendigo said it was committed to a viable and competitive facility. Bendigo council also said reduced cattle sales would not impact the cost of selling sheep at the regional market.

Inglewood stock and station agent James Nevins on Tuesday said he had sold Loddon livestock at three locations in Bendigo throughout his career.

Cactus deal a good step: VFF leader VICTORIAN Farmers’ Federation Wedderburn branch has welcomed the partnership between Bush Heritage Australia and Dja Dja Wurrong Aboriginal Corporation to tackle wheel cactus at Buckrabanyule.

President Graham Nesbit said the partnership could be a step to a broader fight against the invasive and destructive weed.

He said the partnership announced last week showed what could be achieved when different groups worked together.

“Now all we need is for the State Government to come to the party and lift help for primary producers across the region in the fight against wheel cactus,” he said.

Mr Nesbit said there had been talk of greater community engagement by the Government but no details had emerged.

“We have a big problem with wheel cactus and it needs a proper plan for the region,” he said.

Bush Heritage chief Heather Campbell said last week: “While the severity of wheel cactus is concerning, I’m confident it can be brought under control thanks to good land management, time and the ongoing strong collaboration between Bush Heritage and DJAARA.”

A SMALLER yarding of lambs at 15,000, down 6000 on a week ago at Bendigo.

Quality was plainer with very few heavy young lambs over 24kg cwt available, and the majority of the trade types not handling that well despite coming in from southern grazing areas.

Processor demand was weaker, with a couple of companies not attending and several other buyers mostly watching the market.

The result was price falls of $10 to $20/ head over most weights and grades of processing lambs.

A reasonable percentage of the yarding did sell to restockers, with buyers from Ballarat, Bendigo, Echuca, Horsham and Euroa operating. Light store lambs held their value the best.

The heaviest young lambs, estimated at 27kg to 30kg cwt, sold from $240 to a top of $270/head.

The best presented heavytrade pens, 24kg to 26kg, from $212 to $228/head.

There was big volumes of lambs sized from 18kg to 24kg and these generally made from$160 to $200/head depending on finish and breed quality.

In carcass price terms there was a clear divide between the fresher young lambs at 800c to 850c, compared to the plainer drier types which were working out at 760c to 800c/kg cwt.

Restockers were more active, with Ballarat restockers continuing to compete against meat buyers for trade lambs to shear at $190 to $218/head.

The better framed store lambs in the 18kg to 20kg range $152 to $178 to average $166/head to the paddock.

These bigger store lambs were costing similar carcass money to finished stock.

In comparison light store lambs under 16kg sold exceptionally well at $130 to $160 to be estimated at a much higher carcass price point.

Similar sheep numbers, comprising mostly Merino ewes with only a few lines of older wethers available.

Pandemic ‘power grab’ step too far in control

SINCE March 2020 Victorians have lived under an unprecedented State of Emergency, giving the Government control of almost every aspect of our lives.

In March, the Liberal Nationals voted against extending the State of Emergency for a further 10 months.

Now, as we approach the December deadline for the Premier’s extra-long State of Emergency to expire, he has come up with an even more alarming way to maintain control of Victorian’s lives.

Last week the Andrews Labor Government introduced a Bill to Parliament that creates unprecedented new pandemic powers for Daniel Andrews.

The Premier himself could declare a pandemic, even if there are no cases in Victoria or Australia, and would not have to follow the advice of the Chief Health Officer.

The only scrutiny that the Premier would face would be from an independent panel that the Andrews Labor Government would appoint themselves.

PERSPECTIVE The Premier is giving himself supreme power to impose lockdowns and curfews, limit movement, mandate health interventions, and control almost every aspect of how we live.

With such wide-ranging and extreme powers up for grabs, Victorians would be forgiven for expecting that the Bill would be carefully considered and robustly debated in Parliament.

Instead, the Government gave the Victorian Legislative Assembly just three days to pass the Bill, ramming it through the lower house before local MPs had an opportunity to consult with their constituents, let alone health and human rights experts.

Over the last two years, Victorians have experienced the most extreme interventions in our lives anywhere in Australia.

At times, we have been alarmed at the Victorian Government’s power over the way we live our lives.

Nonetheless we have, on the whole,

done the right thing. Time and time again, we have accepted sacrifices to protect the most vulnerable amongst us.

Sadly, this is not enough for Daniel Andrews. He isn’t satisfied with the incredible powers that Victorians have allowed him; he wants even more control.

My Liberal Nationals colleagues and I opposed this Bill, and I voted against it.

Your local Labor and Animal Justice Party MPs in the Legislative Council will vote in the coming weeks, and they are expected to support the Bill.

Now is the time to let them know what you think of their plan to give the Premier even more power with even less scrutiny.

Victorians are willing to make incredible sacrifices to keep our community safe, but the Premier’s latest power grab has gone too far. Victorians will not forget this.

Enjoyment and communication in a 12-month learning curve

By Cr WENDY MURPHY FIRSTLY I’d like to take this opportunity to thank both Jude Holt and Cr Beattie on their leadership over the past few months as Acting CEO and Mayor.

Both have put in a big effort in challenging times.

And secondly to congratulate Lincoln on his appointment as CEO of Loddon and to Cr Dan Straub as mayor-elect.

Here’s hoping the coming 12 months allow us the opportunity to enable Loddon to fully proposer once again.

One year ago I was elected as the Inglewood Ward councillor. It has been a learning curve I have really enjoyed.

But it has also been a busy 12 months working from home, assisting three children home learn and participating in my community.

The highlight for me has been getting

to know new people and groups and having insightful and challenging discussions. My primary focus is to ensure communication is open.

The Calivil, Newbridge and Inglewood communities have presented their Community Plans showing the passion each of these communities has for their area and residents.

We have had in depth discussions with Council Officers and stakeholders on projects such as the Skinners Flat Reservoir development, feasibility of sewerage in Newbridge and the Boort flood levy bank.

I’ve attended community meetings to discuss the lack of childcare options in Loddon as well as many one to one discussions with individuals.

Several important documents in the Council Vision and Council Plan, the Municipal Health and Wellbeing Plan and the Long Term Financial Plan have been

developed and adopted. The Community Reference Group put together some very informed visions for Loddon for the next 10 years with council officers and councillors developing a five-year council plan in support.

The Long Term Financial Plan is a 10year plan assisting council to deliver financially sound budgets.

It’s important we hear from you. I’ve held two recent listening posts and will be holding more in the coming months.

Leonie’s love of outdoors

LEONIE Pollock has always loved the outdoors - she was born in the country, preferred delivering letters to being behind an office desk when working in Melbourne and cherishes memories of her days as a member of the Women’s Land Army in World War Two. The wife of a farmer who raised six children, including twins, at Derby, is preparing for her 100th birthday next week.

She says her love for the country started when she was born at Ararat and then grew when the family moved to New South Wales when she was about five.

That early attachment to rural life had to be temporarily abandoned when her father, a World War One veteran, was killed in a harvest accident and Leonie moved to Melbourne with her mother and brother.

Leonie said it was her father who chose her name, based on the French spelling of

Leone he had heard in that country during the war.

“Mum loved the city life. Dad never did,” Leonie recalled last week. I loved the country too - horses, sheep.

“When I was working with the Liverpool Electric Cable company - it was a pokey little office - they knew I liked being outside so I delivered the mail. It saved them money on stamps, too.

Leonie’s family says she spent time as a nurse before World War Two but was soon again back outdoors as a member of the Women’s Land Army, joining up with life-long friend Val Shields and picking vegetables new Koo-Wee-Rup. As someone who also liked horses, Leonie was often driving the wagon as other women picked the produce.

Sport also brought out passions for Leonie who is proud to be called a women’s cricket pioneer, playing for a Women’s

Land Army eleven in a Melbourne Cricket Ground match against a team of English servicewomen.

It was Leonie’s enjoyment of tennis that saw her meet future husband Neil who was having a break in Melbourne and just happened to catch her eye. An afternoon tea was soon arranged and in 1945, they married and returned to the family farm at Derby.

There, Leonie set about enjoying more of the outdoors and raising the family. In the days before household mod-cons, she would use a honey tin to boil and wash nappies.

“It was a busy time. You did what you had to do,” she said of country life that also included dances in the Derby hall.

Turning 100 next Thursday, Leonie said she wished everyone could live to the grand age.

“I don’t feel any different really. Now

that I’ve retired I sleep in sometimes,” she said.

And Leonie admits to still having a bit of a sweet tooth, recalling her Women’s Land Army days when fresh fruit could be picked from the farm trees.

Daughter Kathryn said Leonie could still be seen riding a bicycle around the family farm two years ago.

“She was one very active lady around the farm where she lived until January 2020,” Kathryn said.

“We hold her in a high regard and love her so much.”

Leonie has 14 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

Inglewood and Districts Health Service and family has special celebrations planned for next week.

Happy Birthday Leonie on an amazing century.

Old station gives carvers platform THE easing of COVID restrictions is allowing Loddon creatives to again share inspiration and art with their peers.

Among them is the Loddon Woodcarving Group that leader Philip Ohlson said was delighted to be back together.

And members have added inspiration for their painstakingly accurate art - the group has become one of the first community organisations to make their base at Bridgewater’s old railway station.

Every Saturday morning, they wheel chairs onto the platform and set to work carving away on timber.

Mary-Anne Scull has been making marionettes (puppets) for the last four years.

Woodcarving blends with her

trade as a leather maker in assembling the marionettes and their moving parts.

Mary-Anne has taken her crafts to the Tarnagulla Primary School and the Arnold Hall.

Group spokesman Phil is renowned for making threedimensional mystical houses from American cottonwood bark.

The retired fly-in fly-out mine worker has also made a model of the Inglewood mine site and is currently working on the intricacies of Tivey House in that town.

And John Oakes delights in the the old station setting as he carves birds that have a special destination.

New pool managers will offer innovative swimming program NEW managers for Loddon Shire swimming pools will introduce the company’s innovative GOSwim programs this summer.

Belgravia Leisure was last Thursday announced as new managers for the pools at Inglewood, Boort, Wedderburn, Mitiamo and Pyramid Hill.

Unified Community Sports and Leisure was the previous contractor for the last five pool seasons.

Swimming Australia and Belgravia Leisure have partnered to develop and deliver a new and effective swimming and water safety program focusing on contemporary experiential and activity-based learning, encouraging and supporting students to explore pathways into competi-

tive and recreational lap swimming.

Belgravia Leisure chief executive officer Nick Cox said the company was was excited to be appointed as managers of Loddon Shire Seasonal Pools.

“We are an experienced leisure management company that is passionate about connecting communities to leisure,” he said.

“We believe that all members of the Loddon Shire community should have equal access to sport, aquatic and leisure facilities regardless of financial or physical ability, cultural background, or stage of life.

“We are excited to bring our innovative programs such as GOSwim to the Loddon Shire community, providing a con-

temporary, experiential and activity based learning program to traditional learn to swim.

“Belgravia Leisure is committed to maximising participation and creating stronger pathways to competitive and recreational lap swimming. All other programs and services that have been offered in the past will continue into the future.

“Belgravia Leisure have been managing aquatic centres in the region for over 30 years. With contracts from Swan Hill to Portland to Bright and Bendigo, we are very excited to now work with closely with Loddon Shire Council in supporting the regional economy through hiring local staff, engaging local suppliers, and helping people connect

to leisure,” Mr Cox told the Loddon Herald in a statement.

The announcement was one of the final acts by outgoing Loddon Shire interim CEO Jude Holt who said: “We look forward to Belgravia Leisure bringing their experience, capability and collaborative approach in working with council and the community to meet residents’ health and wellbeing needs.

“Additionally, the appointment of Belgravia Leisure also brings with it economic opportunities for our region, including local employment and engagement of local suppliers.”

Local swimming pools open on the third Saturday in November and close on the Monday of the March Labor Day weekend.

Captain makes Cup connection COMMUNITIES across the Loddon were in the spirit for Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday.

And for residents at Boort District Health, there was a visit by retired racehorse Captain.

The 18-year-old horse belongs to staff member Michelle Nisbet. Captain won his last race in Queensland back in 2009 and then headed to pasture.

The visit lifted the spirits of residents and ignited memories, growing up with horses.

Michelle’s daughters Neve and Kelsey accompanied Captain and made sure a safe interaction of the horse with residents.

Draws released for start of summer play THE summer sports season starts Saturday for three local associations.

Loddon Valley and Marong tennis associations have released their draws for the season with nears rivals Newbridge and Woodstock-on-Loddon set to meet in the opening round of the Marong association.

Both associations have eliminated the bye this season Woodvale shifting into Marong from the Eaglehawk association and Serpentine swapping from Inglewood association to Loddon Valley.

The Serpentine change was triggered by Loddon Valley having a junior competition. The association has also scheduled its junior championships for February 20.

Upper Loddon junior cricket also starts this Saturday with the first day of two-day matches.

The association has scheduled five two-dayers for the season.

Inglewood tennis and Upper Loddon senior cricket starts on November 13.

Tennis president Robert Senior that while the association is without a formal junior competition this season, sets will be arranged where players are available.

Young stars in the trophies TALENTED netballers have received their trophies for being the Loddon’s best young players.

Daisy Stringer and Georgia Mangan were presented with the Loddon Valley netball awards last week after earlier taking out the season’s best and fairest awards.

Daisy, who plays with Bridgewater, won the 15 and under title which she shared with Newbridge’s Abbi Wells.

She also took out the club’s best and fairest award and has been selected to trial for Netball Victoria Under 17s talent academy. During the season, Daisy also played up in the graded Bridgewater teams.

Georgia plays for Calivil and was the runaway winner of the 17 and under Loddon Valley league best and fairest.

League awards were announced online after the finals series was abandoned by COVID restrictions.
