Not only did Pam Lyons turn up at the window for a snack, so did her pony Sunshine and dog Winston. We reckon Sunshine and Winston were eyeing the sweet treats.

Historic camp ground last-minute reprieve

By CHRIS EARL A HISTORIC camping ground faces an uncertain future if the State Government baulks at funding installation of a $100,000 waste disposal plant.

Overflowing effluent at Tarnagulla Recreation Reserve last week forced Loddon Shire Council to order a halt to camping in the historic precinct.

Discussions between council, the reserve’s committee of management and Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning have since seen to closure put out to April 19.

DELWP is meeting the cost of weekly pumpouts of the septic system for three weeks.

The extension now allows the campground to be used used over Easter and the school holidays.

Caretaker Wayne Chandler said it was important for DELWP to provide a permanent solution to the effluent issue.

“We need a proper waste dispotal plant and that would cost $100,000,” he said.

“We’re very popular with gold prospectors and the budget conscious.

“They love to come here and they bring a lot of business to our town - the store, the cafe, the hotel.

“We need the campground open to generate tourism in and around Tarnagulla.”

Committee secretary Wendy Sutton said: “We can have up to 20 and 30 vans here a day.

“People are just getting back on their feet. We don’t want another setback” DELWP regional manager land and built environment Adam Melis said: “DELWP is working in partnership with Loddon Shire Council and the Tarnagulla Recreation Parks committee of management to explore solutions to an issue with the Tarnagulla Recreation Reserve’s septic system. “DELWP will provide some funding support to the volunteer committee so the septic tank can be pumped frequently throughout the upcoming school holidays so the campground can continue to operate in the short term.

“DELWP, Loddon Shire Council and the volunteer committee of management will work together to investigate options for longer term operation of the site as a public campground.”

Tarnagulla Recreation Reserve is Crown land managed by a volunteer committee of management.

serve in recent years have been funded by the committee using overnight site fee donations from campers.

“We spent $21,000 on the park last year,” said Wendy.

“I’ve been involved with the committee for 40 years and we’ve had to fight many battles in that time.

“Everybody is going to suffer if the campground is closed.”

In a statement, Loddon Shire said: “Due to concerns about the leaking of effluent, which is a public health issue, council has taken action in the interests of the community and visitors. The failing septic tank system requires attention as it is currently not capable of adequately dealing with the wastewater generated.”

Region snubbed for firewood collection points, says Walsh MURRAY Plains MP Peter Walsh has condemned a decision by the State Government to leave a massive slice of Victoria without immediate access to firewood collection.

Mr Walsh has told Parliament it would be a very cold winter this year for all the households in northern Victoria who relied on firewood for heating “because the Andrews Government has effectively excluded all those households from Echuca to the South Australian border from being able to go and collect firewood”.

He said even though there were hundreds of hectares nearby that were more than suitable for collecting firewood, the government through De-

partment of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, could not have planned a bigger mess if they tried.

He asked the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio, to have a heart and show some compassion for those northern Victorians wanting to access firewood.

“There is plenty of fallen dead timber on public land across northern Victoria, it just needs the minister to step in and make sure these areas are listed as firewood collection points for those people who so desperately need firewood for heating this winter,” he said.

The only collection in the Loddon and adjoining areas is in Moliagul State Forest, according to the DELWP website.

Back rattling the tins COMMUNITIES across the Loddon are hoping to see local fundraising efforts for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal return pre-COVID results tomorrow.

Leading the local charge to support the world-recognised hospital are fire brigades and hotels.

Korong Vale brigade is part of the state-wide army of fundraising volunteers for the fifth time.

Captain Ron Weston will lead his team of 15 active brigade members and other local volunteers as the town’s fire truck makes its way around the streets and to camp sites along the river.

Among the team rattling tins will be Tom Bligh and Sam Kett.

Sam, who has recently started studying for a diploma in nursing, said brigade members missed being able to doorknock last year because of COVID restrictions.

“The Good Friday appeal is a great for getting the brigade out in the community and supporting the RCH,” she said.

Tom said Korong Vale’s appeal total last year was $317, less than half the amount raised in 2019. “But this year,

Brigades and hotels across the Loddon are also running raffles and other fundraising

Buns being baked by the dozens EVERY morning this week, trays of hot cross buns have been coming out of the ovens at Bridgewater Bakehouse.

Each tray with 42 buns - the traditional variety, the plain for those not too keen on fruit and contemporary offerings with chococlate chips or Nutella and white chocolate. And new for Easter Week 2021, the salsa caramel variety.

Theresa O’Toole says the bakery started selling hot cross buns in February - six weeks out from Easter.

“The Nutella and white chocolate variety has been very popular,” she said.

Popularity of the bakery’s buns extends beyond its Bridgewater and Bendigo stores.

“We’ve already had customers ordering ahead from Melbourne who will pick up supplies of hot cross buns when they arrive here or taking a stop to an Easter destination further north,” Theresa said.

Hot cross buns date back to the 12th century and are traditionally made and eaten on Good Friday.

Towns gear up for bumper time TOWNS across the region are ready to see their populations swell for the Easter weekend.

Caravan parks, hotels and motels have reported bookings that will see them at capacity.

The strong bookings continue the trend across the region since the Australia Day weekend as tourism operators look to continue recovery from last year’s COVID travel restrictions and lockdowns.

Events cancelled in 2020 are back and contributing to high visitation predicted for this weekend, boosted by Victorians holidaying nearer home instead of interstate.

Loddon Shire Mayor Neil Beattie has welcomed the return of events..

“It’s great to see some sporting events on the calendar during the Easter long weekend, including the Wedderburn Bowling Club Easter Bowls Carnival, Boort Lawn Tennis Club Easter Tournament and the Tarnagulla and District Golf

Club – Easter Cup,” he said.

The shire’s information centre at Wedderburn will open daily except tomorrow, Good Friday and visitors to other towns have been assured of a friendly welcome at local tourism information hubs.

Cr Beattie said: “As always, if you’re planning on heading away please be mindful that there will be extra traffic on the road, and to make sure you take plenty of rest breaks.”

Meanwhile, adding to Easter weekend excitement for travellers along the Calder is the 60’s vibe at Inglewood.

The town’s antique stores are celebrating the style and era of British fashion designer Mary Quant, who is featured in an exhibition now showing in Bendigo.

“Our town is very authentic, so the 1960s Mary Quant theme throughout our stores will add to a wonderful vintage vibe,” said Inglewood Emporium’s Denise Gartside. “Most

of the windows of the shops in town will be very attractive with the colours and clothes of the era.

“The Empire State Hotel is also joining in with either a Mary Quant-themed cocktail or dessert and I’ve put together a 1960s display on the hotel’s wall.”

Denise’s own business has two themed window displays.

“One is a Mary Quant theme with original clothes from that era. I have sourced 1960s clothes for the display,” she said. “The second window features pop culture from 1960s UK when Mary Quant was big – including my Dad’s stereogram.

“I actually remember when my Dad bought it brand new.

So I will be putting that in the display and have music playing from that era.”

Denise has been involved in sourcing and selling clothes for over 30 years, particularly vintage clothes.

Sharing and exploring top spots THE Loddon features in a new gastronomy guide showcasing the region’s culture and traditions around food and drink.

Launched on Monday, the Bendigo and Region Gastronomy Guide features five categories: eat, drink, buy, experience and explore. It is designed for day trips, a long weekend and longer.

Loddon Shire Mayor Neil Beattie welcomed the launch of the guide, which promotes the region’s rich culture and traditions around food and drink, creativity and sustainability.

“It’s fantastic that the Loddon Valley is part of this guide, which provides an opportunity for both residents and tourists to explore the won-

derful food and drink experiences,” Cr Beattie said. “The guide is a fantastic showcase of our region that appeals to everyone, including tourists and residents.”

A Local Producers Directory was also launched, enabling people to search for innovative producers.

They came by train and car LAST Thursday’s 10.30am train arrived in Dingee with CWA members for a Northern Group gathering hosted by the Dingee branch.

The 22 train passengers were joined by another 20 members who had travelled from across the Loddon and Bendigo, The gathering focused on this year’s CWA Victoria themes of indigenous Australia and native grasses.

Boort historian Paul Haw, who wrote Foot Prints Across the Loddon Plains. spoke on his life and how he became a passionate researcher of Loddon’s Dja Dja Wurrung people, their ancient culture and land they cared for and systematically managed for their vital food supply.

Of interest was a display of handmade tools used to gather and prepare food.

Paul described the many massive ovens (middens) that were once scattered along the Loddon River, mostly now destroyed.

He explained the need for more awareness of native grasses, how they interacted as part of fertile land management and how fortunate the Loddon was to have a significant variety of grasses in the Terrick Terrick National Park.

He said Boort had acacia tree plantations that now produced seed to make flour, with acacia flour more nutritious than wheat.

IN BRIEF Wellbeing focus ROYAL Flying Doctor Service is preparing to offer counselling and other mental health support from the Boort Information Resource Centre.

An information sessions is planned for April 9 where local RFDS mental health clinician, David Turnbull will provide practical tips and strategies on how to maintain wellbeing in difficult circumstances.

Pre-selection open THE National Party has called nominations for pre-selection in the federal seat of Mallee.

Anne Webster has held the seat for the party since the 2019 election. Dr Webster told the Loddon Herald she would seek party endorsement to stand at the election due next year.

Wicking garden tubs by Robyn Brown wrapped up the day before guests departed on the 3.15pm train to Bendigo.

Opening soon After 20 years running their businesses from the farm, Ian and Marilyn Lanyon are preparing for the opening of their new Godfrey Street, Boort, shop this month.

It will feature Simply Tomatoes, Country Wool Bedding (the new brand of Aussie Wool Quilts) and Woolly Warmers. Ahead of the opening, there will be a soft launch over Easter.

Groups will share home base WEDDERBURN Care will have a new base as plans advance for the redevelopment of Donaldson Park.

Cr Gavan Holt told last week’s Loddon Shire Council meeting Korong Historical Society had agreed to provide a home for Wedderburn Care.

The care organisation, currently based at Donaldson Park, provides special gift packs for local people with

health challenges. However, Cr Holt said he expected a report to come before council on constructing toilet facilities for the two organisations at the historical society’s museum.

The museum did not have toilets and the estimated cost of improving facilities to assist with co-location was $50,000. “It’s a fair walk to the nearest toilets in the park,” Cr Holt said.

From darkness to celebration of faith ON Easter we enter into the mystery.

We contemplate Jesus, there in the tomb, dead.

In that tomb, he is dead, exactly the way each of us will be dead.

We don’t easily contemplate dying, but we rarely contemplate being dead.

Today’s reflection will lead us to the vigil of Easter.

During Easter vigil, communities from all over the world will gather in darkness, a darkness that represents all that we have been reflecting upon today.

The God who created us, who led a chosen people out of slavery, raised Jesus from death.

We can rejoice that death has no final victory over us. Then we celebrate the Easter Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. We celebrate our faith - that we have been baptised into the death of Jesus, so that we might have everlasting life with him.

So my dear friends, as we behold the body of Jesus in the tomb on easter and

Local PERSPECTIVE as we contemplate the mystery of our death, we prepare our hearts to receive the Good News of life.

We know that tomb will be empty and remain empty forever as a sign that our lives will not really end, but only be transformed.

As we celebrate Easter we might well wonder how Mary Magdalene and the others who went to the Tomb had forgotten what Jesus had said about being put to death and rising from the dead.

The great gifts of Easter are hope and faith. Hope: which makes us have that confidence in God, in his ultimate triumph, and in his goodness and love, which nothing can shake.

Faith: the belief that Christ has triumphed over evil despite appearances and that the Resurrection is the definitive act in human history.

So, we celebrate the mystery of the Resurrection, proclaim our faith and hope, and give thanks for these gifts.

Some people may say that Jesus is not

real and if he is real, he is just someone who is normal like us.

But, my dear friends, in studying the scripture there are many ways to know if the story in the bible is true and existent.

In the literary tradition in the olden times, they are patriarchal.

They seldom include women in the stories and in history, they only include men.

That is why in the story of Jesus, women are still present because these are significant stories of the past that they could not disregard.

Women, especially in the Gospel of Luke are the key people in finding the empty tomb. Women weep for Jesus in Jerusalem. They have a big role in our salvation history.

We celebrate the mystery of resurrection, and we proclaim our faith no matter who we are, for we believe.

OBITUARY RON VINNICOMBE

VALE Ron Vinnicombe

TRIBUTES have honoured CFA volunteer and East Loddon Lions charter member Ron Vinnicombe who passed away last month.

He was a founding member of East Loddon Lions Club 38 years ago.

Ron served the community tirelessly and was on many other committees. He was a recipient of a Melvin Jones award, the highest honour a Lion can receive for service, and a club life member.

As a Lion, Ron served in several roles on district cabinet as well as taking on roles including club president and secretary and has been remembered fondly by all those who knew him. as an incredibly fair and gentle man.

Ron provided many years of ser-

vice to Loddon Shire communities, including as a member of the Australia Day Committee from 2008 until 2019, where Ron’s contribution was highly valued and appreciated, including by Loddon Shire councillors and staff.

Following this year’s Australia Day, Ron was presented with a certificate of appreciation in recognition of the many years of service he provided to the Loddon Shire Council communities.

Loddon Mayor Neil Beattie said: “Our wider community benefited immeasurably from Ron’s commitment and contribution.”

Ron had also been president of East Loddon Men’s Shed since its formation in 2017.

Ron had faced a long battle with cancer.

Daniel Harvey’s first factory

The local blacksmith who won over Yankee pear king

By KEN ARNOLD AGRICULTURAL implement pioneer Daniel Harvey had a nomadic childhood before arriving in the Loddon.

He was one of 11 sons born to Malachi Harvey and Elizabeth McNally.

Three years after his birth, the Harvey family had moved from Gelantipy in East Gippsland to Wycheproof before a shift to Boort in 1881 and thenfinally settling at Mysia about 1887.

The family home of Malachi Harvey was razed to the ground on September 23, 1902, he being absent from the small village of Mysia.

His son Hugh was returning home from work when he noticed a light in the window which turned out to be flames.

He managed to save some furniture.

The property was insured by Phoenix Company. Incidentally, residents in the Mysia area still refer to the land as Harvey’s paddock.

Educated at home, Daniel Harvey was apprenticed to a local blacksmith who absconded to the Wedderburn rush.

Harvey followed and demanded his outstanding pay before setting off for Melbourne followed by Korumburra for some time before taking employment with Kurt Hillman who had a smithy at the corner of Doncaster and Wetherby Roads, Doncaster.

When Hillman died, Harvey managed the business until widow Hillman remarried.

Harvey resigned and took employment with H.V. McKay, Sunshine Harvester Works, although he is known to have lived in Union Road, Templestowe, until 1911 when he purchased land at the corner of Linsley Street and Whitehorse Road, Box Hill, where he started manufacturing farm machinery, he probably being best known for his Petty disc plough that was capable a passing along under the branches of the fruit trees thus close up to the trunk of the tree.

This stripping plough was patented in 1914.

Harvey had some of his

ploughs on display at the showrooms of F R Mellor, 440 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne, by September 1918.

By this time Harvey had a diverse range of equipment which included orchard and road ploughs, fruit graders, polishers, elevators and packing house equipment, frames for drying fruit and tobacco, scrub cultivators, harrows, dehydration equipment.

Also in the range were threepoint linkage and power lifts for tractor drawn implements, spring-tooth tyne cultivators, tobacco planters, mole drainers, scarifiers, patent orchard

and farm harnesses and fruit tunnel dehydrators.

It was not long before the factory was exporting their machinery to New Zealand, South Africa and the Pacific Islands. Hayward Reed, the pear king of California was so impressed with Harvey’s machines that he took several back to America.

Although the business was converted into company during 1937, it was not until March 1949 that a prospectus for an issue of 16,650 shares was filed.

Horwood Bagshaw Ltd purchased T. Robinson & Co, Hugh Lennon & Co, who had already purchased the business of Nich-olson and Morrow, Baltic Simplex Machinery Co. Ltd, Cliff and Bunting, Mitchell and Co, all Melbourne-based farm machinery business houses by 1964 and finally David Shearer Limited of Mannum in 1972.

Daniel Harvey, Main Road, Doncaster, applied for a patent for improvements in the elevation of disc cultivators, No. 18456, August 30, 1901.

Daniel Harvey married Maud Adams and to them were born three children, however, only Hugh Gordon, born 1911, survived and later was admitted to the business.

Daniel Harvey died on December 22, 1960.

Rural partnership recognised A RURAL education partnership in Boort has been recognised at this week’s Championing Victorian Industry within Schools.

The collaboration between Boort District P-12 and Daybreak Cropping - Cutumnal Farms was one of four recognised from northern Victoria.

Northern Victoria MP Mark Gepp said Daybreak Cropping -

Cutumnal Farms in Boort –was providing valuable workplace education for students through programs such as Head Start, school-based apprenticeships and traineeships, structured workplace learning and work experience opportunities.

“Its incredibly important to give students the opportunity to nurture students skills, interests and aspirations through these

programs and its wonderful our local businesses are providing that opportunity,” he said.

“The support of these local businesses in providing handson experience and training for Victorian students has never been more important and we thank and celebrate those employers that support school programs.”

This event aims to strengthen

relationships between schools and industry to provide further opportunities for students.

Schools and school partners nominated businesses and employers who supported students and school-based programs in 2020. Mr Gepp said industry provided an essential and valued contribution to applied learning outcomes for students across VCE, VCAL and

VET programs. Other northern Victorian partnerships recognised at the event were in baking, health and construction sectors in Cobram and Shepparton.

The State Government says it is investing the education and training pathways for students to get the skills they need, including for the $49.8 million Head Start Apprentices and Traineeships program.

Vintage tractors chug along country roads DOZENS of vintage tractors toured the Loddon on Saturday when enthusiasts took to local roads.

The tractors chugged around 74km of roads, along bitumen and on dirt tracks after setting off from Newbridge about 9.30am.

The owner-drivers came from across central and northern Victoria to give their historic agricultural vehicles a run in the country.

Within 20 minutes of leaving Newbridge, the fleet of rural workhorses had arrived near Bridgewater to be met by local vintage tractor collector Glenn Catto.

The convoy then set off to Murphy’s Creek and Tarnagulla before returning to Newbridge.

Group spokesman John Leech said members had been keen to give their machines a run, the Loddon route chosen because of its central location for participants.

The oldest tractor in the convey was the 1938 Silver King owned by John Handley.

The veteran of the fleet was joined vehicles from later decades with a large number of iconic Massey Fergusons out on the roads. The tractors were popular with locals at each of their stops.

Farm women promote local event MEMBERS of Inglewood Women on Farms Gathering travelled to Port Fairy at the weekend for seminars, talks and industry visits.

The weekend had the theme Women for all Seasons.

Among speakers was Hugh Christie, Southern Rural Water’s manager groundwater and rivers, and acting general manager service delivery. He spoke on water trading, efficiency,

sustainable use and groundwater. Other speakers included Janet Moxey, a partner in Australian Fresh Milk Holdings and former ABC journalist Kirsten Diprose.

National Centre for Farmer Health ran workshops during the weekend.

Inglewood will host the next Women on Farms Gathering in November. The group’s 2020 gathering had been cancelled due to COVID restrictions.

Main street speed raises concerns A REDUCED main street speed limit and planning for a truck bypass could improve safety in Inglewood.

That’s the view of the town’s tourism and development committee president Carey Imms who has started discussions with VicRoads on traffic travelling Brooke Street.

Carey also raised the issues at the committee’s meeting last week as the main street becomes increasingly busier with tourists visiting antique and craft shops and passing trucks.

“To have a 40kmh speed limit in the main street would not be a bad idea,” she said.

“But a better solution would be to have a truck bypass, That would resolve of lot of the concerns.”

Carey said there were also concerns about traffic turning from Verdon Street onto Brooke Street, part of the Calder Highway and the main truck route between Melbourne and Mildura.

“If the limit was 40kmh in the precinct, it would be a lot safer for everyone,” she said. ““There’s a lot of near misses but of course, no one has data

Carey said a bypass of Brooke Street had been floated in a 2002 community plan.

Department of Transport director (Loddon Mallee) Melanie Hotton said: “We’ve installed new speed signs at the Calder Highway entrances to Inglewood to improve safety for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists along the main street.

“The signs provide a visual reminder to drivers that they are entering a town and need to adhere to the posted speed limit.

“Safety is always our number one priority which is why we’re always looking for ways to improve our arterial road network.

“We will continue to work with the Loddon Shire Council and closely monitor Brooke Street for any further safety improvements needed.”

The department says it has been working closely with Loddon Shire Council on potential options to remove trucks from the centre of Inglewood for a number of years and will continue to maintain this close working relationship.

To improve safety through Inglewood, Regional Roads Victoria installed ‘community gateway’ treatments on the Calder Highway on the southbound and north-bound approaches to the town last financial year.

“Community gateways make it easier to recognise you’re entering a regional town, see changes to the speed limit and slow down,” it says.

Worshippers fill town’s centre as services return COMMUNITY has been put at the centre of the return to regular worship in Tarnagulla.

Victory Church’s Sunday services started last month in the town’s community centre with worshippers from district communities being joined by people from Bendigo for songs of praise during the gatherings.

The town had been without regular church services for a decade and discussions between community leaders and Victory Church led to a comeback for Sunday worship in Tarnagulla.

Being held fortnightly, the next service falls on Easter Sunday and will

move from the community centre to Victoria Hall to accommodate a larger congregation. The community centre has been filled with worshippers, overflowing under the centre’s verandah.

The special Easter service will be followed by an Easter egg hunt and barbecue.

Church leaders at the service a fortnight ago spoke of the importance for connection in communities and regular opportunities to worship. The service was followed by warming coffee and tea.

Churches across the Loddon will open for special Easter services this weekend.

Court house repairs FINAL repairs have been made to Boort’s court house museum ahead of its reopening after being closed for more than a year.

The project has been supported Loddon Shire Council and under the direction of Peter Sporn, the shire engaged contractors to repair and replace rotted timber and paint all trims along with the old jail house and forcourt seating.

Museum officials say the area now looks splendid with volunteers busy deep cleaning and reorganising displays within the museum in readiness to re-opening for visitors.

Boort Historical Society says it is unable to set an opening date yet but will be guided by the COVID restrictions while also taking into account the safety of its volunteer tour guides.

Seasons that conquered heat, rain and a sudden COVID lockdown SUMMER sport brought many triumphs and achievements for teams across the Loddon in 2020-2021.

But the greatest achievement on the cricket field, the tennis court and bowling rink was completing the season where play was interrupted by heat, a snap five-day lockdown as a COVID outbreak gripped Melbourne and then

on grand final weekend, rain where the Loddon Valley cricket senior grand final was a washout but tennis battled on.

The Loddon Herald has covered many of the sporting clashes in the last two months. As a wrap to the summer season, we feature more teams and players who were part of the final action.

Boyd’s blitz in birthday bash laps A BIG crowd of cyclists, family and friends flooded into Newbridge on Saturday to celebrate John Corry’s 90th birthday.

The family put a lot of time, effort and money into the Central Victorian Veterans’ Cycling Club event Unfortunately, some riders didn’t make it to the start line due to recent COVVID restrictions for travellers from Brisbane, and floods in New South Wales.

Despite these tribulations, close to 30 riders lined up for the 52km handicap of two laps of the Newbridge-TarnagullaLaanecoorie loop.

The sprint prize on offer after the first lap proved to be too much of a temptation for Ken Lacey who took the cash by the smallest of margins from Di Jane and then promptly lost touch with the bunch.

The complexion of the race changed when Eureka visitor Sharon Boyd rode away from her second limit bunch on the first lap, went straight past limit at Tarnagulla the second time around and disappeared into the distance.

From then on it was a scramble for minor placings.

But they didn’t see anyone else until the birthday celebrations were in full swing.

The seven and 10s came together after 40km but they too had a lonely ride to the finish.

Sharon Boyd (23 min) went solo to the line for an impressive victory.

The remnants of limit stayed clear until the last few metres when they were caught by the 19 and 23 minute bunches.

Aileen O’Brien (28 min) and Terry O’Brien (28 min) fought off the chasers to fill the minor places, followed home by Ray Colwell (19 min) , John Weir (19 min) and Di Jane (28 min).

Brent Gibson led the scratch bunch home a few minutes later to record fastest time.

At the after-race celebrations, the Newbridge local Jack Corry reeled off more than a dozen names of people in attendance who he’d ridden with in his 70-plus years of bike racing - what an amazing achievement and the race a great birthday celebration.

After a cancelled 2020 Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria Championships and an uncertain 2021 season due to COVID, brigades were finally allowed to start training in late January.

With only eight weeks and two local competitions, Pyramid Hill was among 38 urban and 30 rural brigades at Mooroopna last weekend for the state championships.

The young Pyramid Hill team coached by Ash Moon and members Luke Roberts, Dylan Moon, Blake O’Toole and Karly Mitchell finished with a credible second in the five-person hose and ladder, third in the one-person marshall, third in the striking one disc twice and third in five-person pumper ladder, finishing sixth overall in the B section on 29 points.

VINTAGE cars were rumbling along Eddington streets when enthusiasts from across Victoria descended on the town for the annual sprint car races.

The event continues to grow in popularity after more than 30 years and again saw the local community working to make it a success.

The hall committee was kept busy throughout Saturday at the canteen and barbecue while local CFA volunteers were on hand to assist with safety as cars raced against the clock.
