MAKING ART HAPPEN FOR 25 YEARS

Founded by artists for artists in 1998, Locust Projects is Miami’s longest running nonprofit alternative art space. We produce, present, and nurture ambitious and experimental new art and the exchange of ideas through commissioned exhibitions and projects, artist residencies, summer art intensives for teens, and public programs on contemporary art and curatorial practice.

As a leading incubator of new art and ideas, Locust Projects emphasizes boundary-pushing creative endeavors, risk-taking and experimentation by local, national and international artists. Over the past 25 years, Locust Projects has commissioned more than 200 exhibitions featuring 485 artists at all career stages and highlighting Miami artists alongside out-of-town artists-in-residence building a network of peers. We invest in South Florida’s arts community by annually providing artists with WaveMaker Incubator grants and empowering creative careers by supporting the administrative work of being an artist through an onsite artist resource hub, including a future Knight-funded Digital Innovation Lab, and access to LegalARTLink’s pro bono legal services.

In 2023 Locust Projects kicked off its 25th anniversary with the inauguration of our new space in Little River. The 8,000 square foot former warehouse offers expanded program opportunities for supporting experimental artistic production, allowing Locust Projects to continue to offer artists the space, time, and resources to take risks and work on a largescale in ways that are not possible in traditional venues.

Key to our success is our community of supporters. Please consider supporting the INCUBATOR ANNUAL FUND or joining the INNOVATORS and help us MAKE ART HAPPEN.

“Locust Projects helped create a diversity of practices and voices for the city, by developing a space where artists can come and explore ideas without the financial pressure, with no objectives or goals outside of being there to make art,” Domenech said. “It’s a space that attempts to create a new set of rules for the artist to make. It places the responsibility on the artist. You are the one in charge of doing as much

as you want and to push yourself as much as you want.”

“The time I spent working on my exhibition Rest Ashore at Locust Projects is memorable in many ways. Still, the most significant is in the cooperation I received throughout the exhibition. From the beginning stages of research to the final install countdown, I always had the needed help to facilitate my creative process. I never felt bogged down or at a loss, and that is significant.”

// LAB: LOCUST ART BUILDERS

Now in its 13th year, the Locust Art Builders (LAB) program offers opportunities to the next generation of creatives from schools across the county to connect and collaborate with their peers to learn to build the world they imagine starting with collaboratively building an exhibition from scratch in a nationally-recognized alternative art space.

“We need spaces like Locust Projects to inspire and to continue fueling the next generation of artists. This was such an amazing opportunity for me that I never would’ve had otherwise.”

LAB: MFA

LAB: MFA invites artists currently enrolled in an MFA program in the U.S. to Miami for a 3-4 week residency to create and present new work. This year specifically LAB MFA has been reinvisioned to focus on art and social practice.

The program allows students selected via an open call process to experiment and develop new work that expands on ideas they have been developing in their MFA studies as a pivotal, career-building opportunity.

“The work that was shown at Locust Projects led me to follow up with even more ambitious projects related to both dance performance and clay. Thank you Locust Projects for believing in me and my work!”
