Foreword Agriculture is a key economic driver for our region – and as the nation’s salad bowl, events such as today’s Regenerative Agriculture Showcase are a meaningful way to enhance the operations of local producers and build on their resilience to drought.

The 2022 Regenerative Agriculture Showcase focusses on the importance of soil health and water quality – relying on natural systems to produce food and fibre. The resulting effect of this principle is a production system that is more resilient to the impacts of extreme weather such as floods preceded by drought.

Maintaining a viable farming operation while responding to environmental pressures puts enormous strain on local farmers, and it is hoped the speakers and exhibitors at the 2022 Regenerative Agriculture Showcase will give our broad range of local farmers access to innovative ways to integrate Regenerative Agriculture into their business to increase resilience, drive productivity and sustain their long-term viability.

Acknowledgement of Country Lockyer Valley Regional Council and the community acknowledge the traditional owners of the Lockyer Valley, and recognise and value their knowledge and land management practices. We wish to pay respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging and acknowledge the important role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to have within the Lockyer Valley community.

Guest Speakers BELINDA CALLANAN (EVENT MC) TH9 OUTDOOR SERVICES NOBBY, QLD Belinda has more than 25 years experience in the Natural Resource Management field. She has worked with all levels of government primarily in the areas of biosecurity and natural resource management planning, facilitation, on-ground works, consulting and training. She enjoys finding solutions to land management issues and upskilling staff on biosecurity measures. Belinda and her husband have established a successful regenerative farming enterprise TH9 Pastoral on the eastern Darling Downs, growing crops regeneratively and backgrounding cattle for trade together with a paddock to plate enterprise.

BEN O’HARA AND MARTIN OAKES TURNER FAMILY FOUNDATION GRANDCHESTER, QLD Ben O’Hara - Ben is the General Manager Land and Environment for the Turner Family Foundation. The foundation conducts land management and restoration activities on three properties in south east Queensland totalling over 8200 hectares. These properties are working cattle farms with mixed enterprises including mountain bike trails and eco-tourism. Each property is protected with a Nature Refuge agreement that protects the properties natural values in perpetuity.

Martin Oakes - Martin is the station manager on Old Hidden Vale Station, one of three properties managed by the Turner Foundation in south east Queensland.

Martin focuses on the breeding characteristics of the cattle herd in a mixed-use operation while balancing the property owners environmental goals.

BROCK MCDONALD GROWCOM TOOWOOMBA, QLD Growcom’s Southern Queensland Resilience Officer, William Brock McDonald not only has a passion for agriculture but also comes from a practical farming background covering intensive cropping, broad acre farming, and grazing production. In his role with Growcom, Brock calls upon his wide range of experiences and skillsets to aid horticultural farm businesses build strategic management capacity and prepare for and manage climate risks.

BRONWYN NEUENDORF 9DORF FARMS FLAGSTONE CREEK, QLD The Neuendorf family are generational dairy, lucerne and horticulture farmers in the Lockyer Valley. After family succession they diversified to heal the land and work with the environment. They now produce ethically grown Australian native fish, marketed direct to the public and have rejuvenated their paddocks using controlled movements of cattle followed closely by poultry.

HELEN LEWIS PICOTS FARM WARWICK Helen is one of Australia’s Internationally Accredited Holistic Management Educators. As Co-Owner of Picots Farm, 1000 acres west of Warwick, Helen and Ian plan their grazing to improve soil biology and ensure they are maximising summer growth, so they have standing feed for winter. They supply chemical free weaners to other farmers who are direct marketing chemical free natural food, while also direct marketing their own grass fed and finished beef.

JAMIE DENNISON GREENCOLLAR BRISBANE, QLD Jamie is the Qld and NT Business Development Manager for GreenCollar, Australia’s largest environmental markets investor, natural resource manager and conservation-for-profit organisation. He helps farmers, graziers, traditional owners and other land managers to identify and create commercial opportunities through nature-based projects that enhance their productive agricultural enterprise while caring for the environment and delivering tangible social and economic benefits.

JULES SCHMIDT TILCO LANE ORGANICS EAST HALDON, QLD Jules and Merridy operate Tilco Lane Organics on the edge of the Lockyer Valley.

It is a Certified Organic operation, farming multiple enterprises with a focus on regenerative agricultural principles. Soil health is a key driver and since integrating livestock and multi species cover crops, benefits gained include improved water infiltration, carbon sequestration and soil life. The couple now direct-market their beef, eggs, vegetables and fodder through local retail and weekly markets.

RANDAL BREEN ECHO VALLEY FARM GOOMBURRA VALLEY, QLD Randal and his family operate a stacked, integrated, multispecies, holistic operation, integrating pastured poultry, pastured pork, grass fed beef, and a Brangus cattle stud known as Echo Valley Farm in Goomburra Valley. These diverse operations are rooted in the values of their 4 Goods - Good for the Animal, Good for the Land, Good for the Farmer & Good for the You (the consumer).

REBEKAH ASH AGRIPROVE GOLD COAST, QLD Rebekah is a Qld based Soil Carbon Operations Officer for AgriProve, Australia’s leading soil carbon project developer. Agriprove takes farmers on the journey from building soil carbon in the field to selling carbon credits to governments and companies with carbon liabilities.

REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE RESEARCH GROUP UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND GATTON AND ST LUCIA CAMPUSES, QLD The Regenerative Agriculture Research Group from the University of Queensland is dedicated to building a scientific evidence-base around regenerative agriculture to facilitate a transition towards more resilient agri-food systems. The group brings together disciplinary expertise in soil, animal, plant, food, social science and business, and has established industry connections throughout Queensland and Australia. Their current research interests include: use of microbial biofertilisers for lettuce production, alternative nutrient supply with compost and recycled nutrients, reducing greenhouse gas emissions through novel cattle feed, use of recycled nutrients within closed-loop poultry systems and identification of factors driving and inhibiting uptake of regenerative agriculture in south east Queensland.

SARAH FEA BEAR BIOLOGICS TOOWOOMBA, QLD Sarah has taken her passion for healthy soil and its connection to human health and landscape resilience around the world. She established BEAR Biologics and consults across horticulture, cropping, cotton, dairy, sheep and beef industries. Sarah’s focus is on using soil monitoring tools to assist in better decision making, planning and profit.
