Parkwood Springs is an amazing, natural, wild space close to the centre of the city of Sheffield. There is woodland and heath, open parkland, and a range of natural habitats where wild lupins bloom, kestrels hover, and deer have been seen again. There are spectacular views over the city centre, the suburbs and the distant moors of the Peak District...

The venue is full of activities and welcomed by residents. But there is a lack of social activities as well as social spaces and we want to improve that.

Reviews

Ben: Lovely park with some great views!

Micheal: Great for walking cycling and playing football etc on fields!

Clare: Great place for walks and cycling. Good views

Sarah: Brilliant place for dog walks!

Iiican: I entered it from east-south side. The first half is suitable for walkers and riders. However, the last half is very hard to walk. There are a large amount of flying insects in the last half way. However it's suitable for riders. Anywhere it's a good place. But if you want a in-depth experience, from east- sorth side to west-north side, be prepared.

Mihaela: Garbage everywhere. Hope they can be dealt with.

Most significantly, he draws a distinction between “circular” and “linear” metabolisms: the former supposedly characterizes the natural world—one organism’s waste is another’s sustenance—and thelatter characterizes the urban world—resources in, waste out.(Wachsmuth, D. 2012)

2

The extent of this environ- mental devastation, encompassing land, air, and water-all in aid of relatively cheap oil for the consumer and hefty profits for the oil companies-is a vivid reminder of the urgent need for future conurbations to discover and design alternative and efficient ways of using energy resources. Rethink and redesign on urban flows in a circular way, including the reduction, reuse, and recovery of resources.(Spiro P. et al. 2012)

Like Bateson, Guat- tari places emphasis on the role that humans play in relation to ecological practices.(Spiro P. et al. 2012)

CONCEPT

‘Vorticism’isessentiallyaschoolofpainting.Thevortexiscreatedbythespoutingofwaterfromthegroundinarainstorm,drivingaforceofabsorption.

‘Elements such as human, animals and vegetation are discrete dots in cities. By applying the site several strategies. We attempt to make it an urban vortex in which the discrete elements are draw into, they invade and merge with each other.

The forest in the city is also a vortex, as it attracts elements such as insects or animals from its surroundings. A football field in a city is also a vortex, as it attracts residents from its surroundings to play.

LARGE SCALE ANALYSIS

The large-scale mapping represents the connection between the site and the city. It shows the city's transport network system and main rivers, and also shows the green infrastructure, and the population density.

According to our research, flooding has not had a major impact on the area in recent years and is not currently a main issue for the site. We will therefore focus on other major issues in the area, such as accessibility.

NEIGHBOUR SCALE ANALYSIS

The analysis of the surroundings represents the links between the site and the surrounding communities. It shows the distribution of the transport network system and buildings around the site, as well as the distribution of the surrounding green spaces.

Building use Transportation Green land

Based on the analysis of the site's surroundings, we decided to start with the population. We found a wide variation in age, employment status and educational attainment of the population in the area, which provided us with ideas for the subsequent design zoning, especially in the public resources balancing.

Ecological Value
There are nine main vegetation types on the site. Each type includes different plant growth characteristics. From the analysis we can see that the site has a rich and diverse biodiversity and plant diversity. And most of them are important natural conservation areas with huge local and eological value.
This is the potential elements which can form green vortex on site.

SITE ISSUES AND SOLUTION

According to the investigation of the site, we have summarized some existing problems of the site from different aspects.

Here are some of the problems that can be identified straight away:

Poor accessibility

Brokentombstones,piledwithrocks

Some roads are narrow and difficult to walk

Based on the concept of Urban Vortex, we have divided Vortex into three layers: Green Vortex, Social Vortex and Unique Vortex. Each of them will address a different site problem and guide our design.

2.Enrich the types of greenspace on site

Retained part of the landfill area on site. Extend the existing woodland and the grassland. Add wildflower meadow and farmland to enrich the types of greenspace on site.

3.Growing forest belt

The growing woodland belt is currently positioned as a mixture of low trees, shrubs and grassland, which will grow into a dense forest in the future, linking the original woodland of the site and providing a wider habitat for organisms.(Solve the problem of high mortality

By dividing the green areas of the site, we have proposed new social areas with strong sociability.

The Workshop is a place where people can experience transforming rubbish into art or craft.

The Sustainability Centre will be the area for planning and arranging events for the venue.

The Community Garden is a place for residents to experience farming, where people can earn volunteer points by their work to echange other goods made from workshop.

The Exhibition is set up on the edge of a public green space, allowing visitors to display the artistic results of waste recycling transformation.

BMX Park is a unique event culture in the area and we will be expanding it to add different experiences to the route. We also retain the original Sports Area on the site.

The landfill area on site exactly provide us the chance to involve surrounding residents in such a garbage ecology circulation, and that is also why landfill and garbage become the unique elements.

Landfill areas are usually located in suburb. Therefore, there is little chances to combine landscape with landfill. Meanwhile, citizens can hardly be involved in ecological activities related to landfill or more specifically with garbage.

CIRCULATION REARRANGEMENT

Lift point

The original site has multiple entrances. According to the survey, we found that many entrances have poor accessibility. Among them, the entrance in the south direction has the worst sense of arrival. According to the original path direction, we hope to enhance the worst accessibility of each entrance, especially the entrance to the south. Clarify the park's main routes and branches, as well as cycling routes, with the new route plan.

PHASES AND SCENARIOS

Looking forward to the energy that green vortex brings

We hope that some grasslands on the site will gradually develop into woodlands in the future. Gradually, they will be developed into ecological dense forests, which will continue to attract and protect urban creatures, especially urban birds, and provide them with a high-quality station.
