Jersey offers high quality private and public healthcare, however Jersey isn’t part of the NHS so we have different rules to the UK and other countries. Treatment in the Emergency Department of the Hospital is free, but when you first move to Jersey you will have to pay for most healthcare provisions. What you have to pay for: • Visits to the doctor or GP • Non-emergency treatment at the hospital (unless you are ordinarily resident and Licensed)
• Other care, treatment and related costs including travel costs

Social Security Health Card If you are new to the Island it is important to register with the Social Security Department as soon as you arrive. Once you have been here six months, and have paid any Social Security contributions that are due, you will be eligible for a Social Security Health Card. Although you will not be able to get your health card immediately, the six months are counted from when you first register. You will need a health card to get a subsidy when you visit your GP and to get free prescriptions.
Hospital-based treatment Emergency treatment at the Jersey General Hospital is free. If you have a Licensed permission* to live and work in Jersey, and you are ordinarily resident in the Island then non-emergency, hospital based treatment is free of charge (except for services where a charge is applicable to all service users, e.g. X-rays).
What about my family? All immediate members of your family that relocate with you will require their own health card. If you are ordinarily resident and Licensed, your eligibility for free hospital-based treatment is extended to your ordinarily resident spouse/registered civil partner, providing that they:
• ordinarily live with you AND; • are to remain living in Jersey (evidence of intent to remain resident in Jersey is required) AND; • do not ordinarily live elsewhere. Also, if you are ordinarily resident and Licensed, your eligibility for free hospital-based treatment is extended to your ordinarily resident dependent child/children providing they are:
• under the age of 18, or under 21 but still in full-time education; • ordinarily live with you AND; • are to remain living in Jersey (evidence of intent to remain resident in Jersey is required) AND; • do not ordinarily live elsewhere.

Prescriptions in Jersey
In Jersey GP surgeries are private businesses so you will have to pay to use them. Fees vary slightly from surgery to surgery and additional charges may be made for services like injections and blood tests.
If you have not been in Jersey long enough to have a health card (six months), you will have to pay the full cost of any prescription from your GP.
For the first six months after you arrive in Jersey, you will have to pay the full cost if you need to visit a GP. Once you have been in Jersey for six months and paid any Social Security contributions that are due, you will be able to apply for a Social Security Health Card. Showing this card at your GP’s surgery will give you a discount of £20.
If you have a Social Security Health Card, prescriptions are free. Whilst the majority of GP prescription items are free, there are some exceptions. Dental Treatment in Jersey
The General Hospital provides a wide range of procedures and treatments that you can access as a private patient. Simply visit your GP and they will refer you to a hospital consultant.
General dental treatment for adults in Jersey is provided privately so you will have to pay to see the dentist. Surgical dental treatment following a referral is carried out at the General Hospital as per ‘hospital-based treatment’ (see previous page).
If you have private medical insurance, you should check with your insurance company that your policy covers Jersey (Channel Islands). Alternatively, you can choose to pay for your treatment. The Private Patient unit has ensuite rooms with TV featuring 200+ channels, free WiFi, daily consultant visits, flexible visiting hours, a dedicated nursing team and private chefs.
