Karen and Markus live with their children in Karen’s idyllic childhood home. Karen’s sister Jule and her family arrive to celebrate Markus’s birthday. Somber memories of their deceased mother reinforce Jule’s urge to rebel against her sister’s dominance. As the house starts filling with life, Karen tenses up; everything comes to a head. Some past things are destroyed in order to create something new.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE: I endeavor to portray, in a fairytale-style and a two-day condensation, the changing relations of a family, suggesting the utopian vision of a sparrow managing to escape from a chimney and flitting freely across the sky ever after.

The vine bore fruit and it’s harvest time. Soraia, a young girl, cuts herself. Blood mixes with wine. A black bull is on the loose. Up in the oak trees, time swells, and a community takes shelter. DIRECTOR’S NOTE: We shared bread and wine, pain and love, war and peace. We called our dead, memories, and history to help us tame the beasts and liberate us to celebrate life. Sometimes we like to imagine that cinema has the gift of sorcery.

NOTE DI REGIA: Mettevamo in comune pane e vino, dolori e amori, guerra e pace.

Fida grew up during the war in Beirut in the 1980s, immersed in the "red hell" her grandmother used to tell her about. The trivialization of death made her doubt the value of life and the meaning of this never-ending war that was so similar to so many others. Using miniature figures and models, she meets the militiamen and confronts her childhood vision with theirs.

FR

DIRECTOR’S NOTE: By inviting Fida to revisit her past and confront the militiamen, Sylvie Ballyot immerses us, without judgment, in a universal vision of war where, beyond the causes each defends, a bomb remains a bomb.

Tez kills for money. Charles Mahr, a legendary gangster, hires her to avenge the murder of one of his couriers. Once in Brussels, she gets caught up in the thicket of an intrigue in which she herself becomes the prey. Tez has to decide whose instrument she wants to be.

IT

FR

DIRECTOR’S NOTE: What fascinates me about gangster films: how directly you can speak of fate and death, circumventing the realisms of contemporary cinema. As a “modern form of tragedy” (J.-P. Melville) the genre playfully performs last “rites”.

A lady on a pedestal holding a burning bright torch is now synonymous with images of Rita Hayworth, Jean Arthur, Glenn Ford, and Judy Holliday. Though the lady draped in the American flag became the logo of Columbia Pictures, the films produced by that studio tended to drag this figurehead of liberty down and examine her more unglamorous side. American values were dissected and questioned through tales of fast-talking career women, existentialist cowboys, and prophetic anti-fascist quickies. Yet, the symbol of the still burning torch over The End title was an affirmation of the values being rebuilt through the skilful art of Howard Hawks, Dorothy Arzner, and Richard Quine. This program looks at the golden age of Columbia Pictures, 1929 – 1959, mapping its glorious rise from Poverty Row to major Hollywood force. Almost the entire period under scrutiny coincides with the presidency of Harry Cohn, the frugal and irascible man who co-founded and ran the studio until his dying day. Contrary to his reputation as a penny-pinching vulgarian, he was open to new possibilities and eager to work with new talents. Because Cohn, unlike other Hollywood majors, opted for short-term contracts, it meant that talents could drop in and out, creating more buzz and allowing for aesthetic diversity. It is often suggested that it was Frank Capra who single-handedly shaped the Columbia style with its screwball dazzle, social consciousness, and romantic comedy formulas, yet the bulk of films produced by other heavyweights suggests a more take-andgive situation. Nevertheless, it was Capra’s unprecedented success that made Columbia a studio conscious of directors and their potential star status. Thanks to Cohn’s respect for directors, gods of cinema – Frank Borzage, George Cukor, John Ford, and Fritz Lang among them – could enjoy some of their more unrestrained moments at Columbia. The Lady ran their names above the title. In its heyday, Columbia specialised in churning out snappy mystery films, sophisticated comedies, lean Westerns, and classy exploitation movies while short subjects, such as Three Stooges films, made the cash, such as it was, flow even in the dark days of the Great Depression when other studios were reporting massive losses. Enriched by the talent and vision of figures such as André De Toth, John Sturges, Joseph H. Lewis, and Phil Karlson, Columbia’s B-unit was a real powerhouse, and by the end of the ‘50s, the genres once used for quickies had picked up so much momentum and edge that they were almost unrecognisable in their complexity. A fresh way of telling stories had been initiated and a new American cinema, in which Columbia directors like Budd Boetticher, Nicholas Ray, and Irving Lerner were seen as role models, was about to be born. This unofficial history of Columbia Pictures both teases out the nuances in the story of a leading studio while stressing the significance of canonical titles worthy of continued celebration. It’s a jam session between artists and genres through three exuberant decades of incessant creativity, evolution, and growth, reminding us that once upon a time there was a brilliant exchange between art and commerce, between the system and the artist. EN

Somewhere between utterly silly and consummately brilliant with its fully rhyming dialogue, Umpa is the catchword for that enduring urge that makes people do ludicrous things with absolute determination.
