The 69th annual West Orange St. Patrick’s Day Parade The 69 annual West Orange St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be on Sunday, March 13, stepping off at 12:15 p.m. from the corner of Mount Pleasant Avenue and Main Street.

The parade will continue north on Main Street, ending at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, 1 Eagle Rock Ave. Leading this year’s parade will be Mellen Dangler as grand marshal, and John A. DeMars Jr., Patrick F. Giblin, Bobby Lamb and Robert Swenson as deputy grand marshals.

Prior to the parade, morning Mass will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes at 9:30 a.m. Honorees and organizations are requested to assemble at 9 a.m. in the front of the church.

Complimentary shuttle buses are provided to transport marchers and spectators to the parade’s starting location at Town Hall. The buses begin boarding at 10:30 a.m. on Mississippi Avenue, adjacent to Our Lady of Lourdes. Buses will stop promptly at 11:45 a.m. Parking is available but limited at George Quigley Parking Lot, at 105 Harrison Ave., and on the surrounding streets.

Main Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from Northfield Avenue to Harrison Avenue from approximately 11:15 a.m. to approximately 3 p.m. Eagle Rock Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic at approximately 11 a.m. eastbound at Crest Drive and to all traffic at Mountain Avenue. Mount Pleasant Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic at Gregory Avenue, eastbound, and to all vehicular traffic at Laird Drive. Ancillary streets along the Main Street corridor may also be closed as needed. Temporary “No parking” signs will be placed along the parade route and ancillary streets. Vehicles in violation of parking restrictions will be ticketed and towed at the owners’ expense. For questions, contact the West Orange Police Department at 973-325-4000.

Dangler chosen as 2022 grand marshal Mellen Dangler was born in 1962 at St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston, the ninth and probably favorite child to the late Wilbur and Eileen (Whalen) Phillips.

She is the granddaughter of the late Bridget (Kelly) Whalen, of County Mayo, and Edward Whalen, of County Kerry. Dangler is a lifelong resident of West Orange, having attended Gregory Avenue School, Roosevelt Middle School, West Orange High School and Essex County College.

She has been married to the love of her life, Darren, for 30 years. She is the proud mother of Kristin, Breann, Morgan and Darren Jr. She is the sister of Eileen, Joanne, Debbie, Vincent “Butch,” Harry “Hep,” Gary, Stephen and Jimmy, and is the aunt of 33 nieces and nephews, and the great-aunt of 34 great-nieces and great-nephews.

Dangler is co-owner, along with her husband, of the Dangler Funeral Home of West Orange and the Dangler Lewis & Carey Funeral Home in Boonton. She

is an active member of numerous civic and cultural organizations, including the Giblin Association, the Irish American Society of the Oranges, the Eagle Rock Civic Association and the Women of Irish Heritage, where she is a past financial secretary.

Dangler’s faith plays a significant role

in her life and that of her family. She and her family are devoted parishioners at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, where she and her husband serve as Holy Communicants. Their children have all attended parochial schools, including St. Joseph’s School, Our Lady of Lourdes School, Trinity Academy, Villa Walsh Academy, Mount St. Dominic Academy and Seton Hall Preparatory School. Mellen and Darren Dangler have been strong advocates of their children’s parochial journeys and have played an extremely active role in many school organizations.

Mellen Dangler is widely known for her incredible fundraising prowess and has spearheaded many successful charitable events for more than 25 years. The annual St. Patrick’s Day Party has aided projects and organizations such as, but not limited to, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Lizzie Chern Foundation, the West Orange Police Athletic League, the Police Unity Tour and Family Reach.

DeMars serves as deputy grand marshal John A. DeMars Jr. was born in Nutley to the late John Arthur and Elaine Lois (Dyle) DeMars. His Irish roots date back several generations to the late 1800s and early 1900s. His great-great-grandparents, the McGreevys, Walshes and Gallaghers, after emigrating from counties Tyrone and Derry, settled in Newark. The McGreevys owned and operated a bar on Passaic Street in Newark through the early 1900s.

DeMars was raised in Nutley with his younger brother, Andrew. When he was growing up, his grandmother and greatgrandmother instilled in him love and pride for his Irish heritage. He has visited Ireland many times and enjoys Ireland’s rich culture and history, and spending time visiting friends in many areas of the country.

DeMars attended Seton Hall Preparatory School for a time before transferring to and ultimately graduating from Nutley High School. He then attended Lincoln Technical Institute. After deciding to pursue a career in law enforcement, DeMars was appointed a sheriff’s officer for the Essex County Sheriff’s Office in 1994.

In 1996, DeMars was appointed to the West Orange Police Department and served in the Patrol Division. He was assigned to the Detective Bureau in 1998, where he served until 2005, when he was promoted to sergeant. As a sergeant he served in the Patrol and Internal Affairs

divisions. In 2012 he was assigned to supervise the newly created Street Crimes Unit. DeMars then was assigned to the Drug Enforcement Administration as a task force officer from 2015 to 2017. Upon returning, DeMars was promoted to lieutenant. He currently serves as the commanding officer of the Detective Bureau and Juvenile Aid Bureau in the Criminal Investigations Division.

DeMars has been the recipient of numerous awards during his career, including multiple awards for valor, meritorious service and excellence, and command citations from New Jersey, Essex County and West Orange policemen’s

benevolent associations. He is also very proud of having received the Officer of the Year award from the Essex County PBA and the West Orange Chamber of Commerce. DeMars was recently selected as one of the recipients of the 2020 Irish Echo “Law and Order” awards.

DeMars is a member of West Orange PBA No. 25, Essex County Emerald Society Chapter 1 and the West Orange Elks Lodge No. 1590.

DeMars married his love and best friend, Dana, in 2005. They reside in Verona with their three children, Cara Ann, 13; Jack Richard, 12; and Ryan Patrick, 10, of whom they are extremely proud.

“I have always been extremely impressed by the pride and excitement the parade has portrayed and generated,” DeMars said. “I have marched for the last 24 years, and every year it just gets better.

My wife, Dana, and our children now enjoy marching and being a part of the day as much as I do. Although I have never officially lived in West Orange, I have worked for the public here for the last 24 years and have adopted West Orange as my second home. The honor of being chosen deputy grand marshal by the Parade Committee is more than anything I could imagine and will be one of the highlights — if not the highlight — of my career serving residents of the township of West Orange.”

Giblin honors his Irish roots in parade Patrick F. Giblin is proud to serve as a deputy grand marshal of the 2022 West Orange St. Patrick’s Day Parade. He traces his Irish roots to counties Longford and Mayo on his mother’s side and County Roscommon on his father’s side.

Giblin and his wife, Tara, have been married for 18 years; they settled in Cranford in 2009. They are the proud parents of three children and are active in all of their children’s activities as leaders, coaches or just cheerleaders.

Giblin graduated from Villanova University in 1997 and received an MBA from the Fordham University Gabelli School of Business. He is a member of the Villanova University Financial Club, supporting its internship and mentoring programs.

He has worked in the financial services industry for more than 20 years. He is a certified financial planner and holds the certified investment management analyst and chartered retirement plans specialist designations. He currently holds his Series 3, 31, 7, 63 and 65, as well as his life and health insurance licenses.

He was named Young Irishman of the Year by the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of the Oranges in 2009 and has served as a trustee of the organization since. He served as chairperson of the 38th annual New Jersey Irish Festival in 2009 and currently serves as treasurer of the festival. He is a trustee of the St. Patrick’s Guard of Honor, and currently serves as

secretary of the organization.

Giblin was sponsored to be deputy grand marshal by the Ancient Order of

Hibernians Division 9. He has been an AOH member for more than 25 years; at Division 9, he served as treasurer, vice president and president. He has proudly marched behind the AOH banner in many West Orange St. Patrick’s Day Parades. In 2018, he was one of the honorees at parade’s annual dinner dance.

He was elected to the Cranford Township Committee in November 2015, becoming the third generation of the Giblin family to serve in elected office. He was reelected to a second term in 2017. He served as commissioner of finance from 2015 to 2016 and commissioner of public safety from 2017 to 2018. He served as mayor of the township of Cranford in 2019 and 2020.

An active member of the Cranford Jaycees, Giblin served as vice president, president and chairperson of the Cranford Jaycees board of trustees, and as chairperson of the Cranford Jaycees Scholarship Committee, which annually awards more than 20 college scholarships to Cranford students on the basis of community service. He was one of the founders of the annual Oktoberfest event that has raised funds for the Cranford Volunteer First Aid Squad and other local charities over the past seven years.

Giblin will proudly march in the 2022 West Orange St. Patrick’s Day Parade, joined by his wife, three children, and 11 nieces and nephews serving as aides.

Lamb shows his commitment to West Orange Bobby Lamb was born and raised in Montclair. He is the second oldest of six children born to Ed and Jane (Meehan) Lamb. He attended Immaculate Conception Grammar and High School in Montclair, as did his parents and siblings. At ICHS, he excelled in basketball and baseball, and, as a senior, was elected captain of the basketball team. He is a member of the ICHS Athletic Hall of Fame. After high school, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and proudly served for two years.

While in the military, Lamb was selected, while stationed at Fort Belvoir, Va., to play both basketball and baseball for the All 2nd Infantry Division Army teams.

After being transferred to Korea, he was selected to play on the All 8th Infantry Division Army teams. After his discharge, he attended St. Peter’s University, where he majored in history.

Lamb is the proud father of five children: Dennis, the late Kevin, Colleen, Kathleen and Kelly. He is also proud to be the grandfather of nine grandchildren. His children were raised in West Caldwell and still live within 15 miles of where they grew up. Upon retirement, Lamb and his wife, Kathleen, moved to a Lake Como bungalow at the Jersey Shore. Lamb’s parents had purchased the bungalow in 1942, in what was then South Belmar. Four generations of Lambs have enjoyed it ever since. Ten

years ago, Bobby and Kathy Lamb purchased the house from Bobby’s sisters.

They winterized the home and remodeled the interior. With the purchase, they have ensured that the house will remain in the Lamb family for generations to come. Bobby and Kathy Lamb are now members of the Belmar Fishing Club.

Bobby Lamb’s business career consisted of 45 years as an executive in the advertising industry, working with three different advertising agencies as a vice president, senior vice president and executive vice president. Working with

major national and international advertisers, his expertise was marketing; his specialty was designing, planning and implementing local marketing plans for national advertisers. He was also involved in new business acquisitions, agency expansion and agency acquisitions. For one of the agencies, he opened offices in Toronto and Montreal, Canada; London and Manchester, England; Paris, France; Milan, Italy; and Tokyo, Japan.

These offices then reported to him. He was instrumental in many agency acquisitions. He has received numerous industry awards and was the head of several industry steering committees. Upon his retirement, he was recognized with the Excellent Career Award presented by the Local Marketing Association.

Lamb’s Irish roots can be traced to County Cork and County Leitrim. Lamb has traveled to Ireland several times.

Though he lives five minutes from the Belmar Shillelagh Club chapter, he has been a member of the West Orange Shillelagh Club for more than 20 years; his father was one of the original members. Lamb was awarded the Shillelagh Man of the Year award in 2017. He proudly marches in both the West Orange and Belmar/Lake Como St. Patrick’s Day parades.

in the Eastern Seaboard League; on weekends, they traveled from Canada to Florida to play. Lamb participated in four National Fastpitch Tournaments — two as a player, one as a coach and one as a manager. Another hobby is golf; he has belonged to the Essex Fells Country Club for 18 years.

Lamb currently volunteers as a road marshal for many of the 5-mile and 5K charity races at the Jersey Shore, including the Belmar Shillelagh 5K and the Fallen Heroes 5K. In addition to the Shillelagh Club, Lamb is a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 9, Montclair. He has been a member of the Montclair Knights of Columbus for more than 50 years. He is involved with the Wounded Warrior Project, Covenant House, Disabled Veterans and the Special Olympics. Lamb was the founding chairperson of the Immaculate Conception High School board of trustees and is still an active member of the board. He has been involved in many of their initiatives and currently is involved in the renovation of the ICHS football field and field house. He was one of the two organizers of the ICHS Golf Outing, which is now nearly 40 years old. He also was a founding member of the ICHS Hall of Fame Committee. A few years ago, he was presented the Distinguished Alumni Award by ICHS.

Swenson honored as deputy grand marshal Robert Swenson was born on May 21, 1959, at Montclair Community Hospital to Richard and Mary Swenson. He was raised in Montclair and attended Northeast Elementary, Mount Hebron Middle and Montclair High schools; he graduated from MHS in 1977. Swenson then attended Allegheny College and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He began his career in 1981 at L.J. Gonzer Associates as an architectural industrial product and location photographer. Swenson was a partner at Alchemy Photographic from 1995 to 2000. He is currently employed by the Essex County Improvement Authority as a facility manager and is the owner of “Rob Swenson Photography.”

In 1991, Swenson married his wife, Lisa Dorothy, who sadly died in 2016.

Swenson is a member of the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh of Essex County and is a former bartender, as well as a bar manager, at the Shillelagh Club in West Orange. He is an avid golfer and is a member of the Tri-County Golf Club, having served as president.

Swenson’s passion behind the lens has made him famous throughout New Jersey as the premier photographer for Irish events. He began photographing events in the late 1980s, including

events for the McGovern Association, Giblin Association, the Newark St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Ironbound Irish, Women of Irish Heritage, police/fire events and numerous other organizations. In 1999, Swenson became the official photographer of the West Orange St. Patrick’s Committee. He is known for capturing priceless memories for honorees at the investiture ceremony and on parade day. He has also been an integral part of the parade committee, serving as a public relations officer and historian.

He is honored and humbled to be chosen as a 2022 deputy grand marshal.

West Orange parade history goes back more than seven decades The roots of the West Orange Parade can be traced back more than 70 years to two organizations that are still involved today. The Irish American Society of the Oranges and the Frank O’Hara Association would march south along the west side of Main Street from Our Lady of Lourdes Church to the present site of the old A&P parking lot. At that point, they would board buses and proceed to the Newark St. Patrick’s Day Parade. In 1974, a permit was obtained from the West Orange Police Department to expand the parade. In that year, the parade, following its expanded route, proceeded to Town Hall and occupied the full width of Main Street. It was also during this time that the parade was dedicated to Archbishop Thomas A. Boland, and that a reviewing stand was arranged at the West Orange Community House. The parade sadly lost Boland in March 1979. The archbishop’s last public appearance was fittingly at the parade he admired so much, just five days prior to his death.

In 1976, the Parade Committee was formed; it was officially incorporated in 1977. This initiative was led by the first parade chairperson, Patrick J. Melvin. It was through Melvin’s vision that the modern parade was born. Melvin died in 1996, one day after his beloved parade went up the street again; he remained an officer on the committee till the day of his death. The formation of the Parade Committee expanded the financial as

well as the physical base of the parade.

The first formalized West Orange St. Patrick’s Day Parade was held in the U.S. bicentennial year of 1976.

The parade has grown exponentially from its modest beginnings through the continued dedication of the committee.

The committee today comprises many children and grandchildren of that “beginning” generation. The parade has now become a statewide attraction, as few other parades can match its dignity, class and size. The parade attracts thousands of marchers, including area Irish American groups, and fraternal, community and school groups.

One tradition of this parade is that all participants are encouraged to attend Mass together as a prelude to the parade.

The parade Mass has become a beautiful part of the day, with the marchers led in by the Shillelagh Pipe Band. The Mass gives the marchers pause to remember the intertwined nature faith plays in Irish culture and St. Patrick’s holy deeds. Due to the parade Mass’ appeal, the location is rotated yearly, involving the parishes of Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of the Valley, Our Lady of the Lake and St. Joseph’s.

The parade’s other tradition is its annual investiture ceremony. This event is the social highlight of the St. Patrick’s Day season. This is the official swearing-in ceremony of the parade’s grand marshal and deputy grand marshals. A highlight of the event is the introduction of all former

parade honorees, who often return to support the parade each year. The newest honorees are presented with their sashes that day and formerly introduced as part of the “parade family.”

The parade continues to grow in size and respect, as witnessed by larger turnouts of marchers, spectators, and the attendance of U.S. senators, governors, representatives and other elected officials. It has grown because of the

family atmosphere and family traditions it has fostered.

The committee has been innovative in improving the parade in many ways. The advent of flags, banners, posters, websites, pins, corporate sponsorships and more has constantly evolved. The West Orange parade has been socially innovative by having the first female grand marshal and first female chairperson of any parade in the state.
