These events provide a very unique environment: a cross-section of residents, visitors, business professionals, and community leaders. West Orange Neighborhoods Gregory This section can trace its early development to 1908 when the Hudson Tubes now known as PATH first opened. It provided greater access to the Lackawanna Railroad and since Mountain Station in South Orange was the first stop in a suburban setting it enabled families from New York to settle in and around Gregory Avenue.

Hutton Park In 1820 a mineral spring was discovered on this property and the Orange Springs Hotel was erected and developed into a resort. In 1887 the Essex County Country Club was formed and constructed their first golf course here in 1898 before relocating to their Prospect Avenue location in 1918.

St. Cloud Originally founded by Benjamin Small who began building small cottages here in the 1860s. The development was named by Small's wife because the area reminded her of a Paris, France suburb by the same name.

St. Mark's Sections of this church was originally constructed in 1827 with stone quarried from Shrump's Quarry in Pleasantdale and remains today as West Orange's oldest standing landmark.

The Valley Often refered to historically as the Orange Valley is the area bordering Orange. Beginning in the 1850s it became a center for hat manufacturing and at one time was home to 29 hat factories in the surrounding vicinity.

Llewellyn Park First sections founded by Llewellyn Haskell beginning in 1854 whose vision for preserving the natural beauty of the Orange Mountains resulted in what is considered to be the first gated community in the United States.

Tory Corner Originally named Williamsville after the Williams family who were the first to settle in the area. They were Tories who were loyal to the British Crown during the American Revolution and gathered near these crossroads which has since been known as Tory Corner.

Pleasantdale First settled by Samuel Condit in 1720.

References to Pleasantdale first appeared in a diary kept by his granddaughter living there in 1772 making this the oldest section name in current day West Orange.

Watchung Heights Founded by Waston Whittlesey beginning in 1894 with 1103 building lots.

The successful development of the area was aided by the Eagle Rock trolley line that ran through the property until 1924.

The Mountain Top League (MTL) is a volunteer organization which serves the children of West Orange, NJ since it was founded in 1959. It remains the largest youth organization in West Orange!

MTL provides recreational programs for children of all levels in Baseball, Basketball, Hockey, In-House Soccer under the Mountain Top League banner. United Soccer Club, our Traveling Soccer club, offers competitive soccer for our advanced players.

MTL is organized and managed by a team of dedicated volunteers. As a volunteer organization, the success of their programs rely heavily on parents, guardians and/or residents of West Orange who are 18 years or older and volunteer as Team Coaches, Managers, League Commissioners or Trustees.

Sportsmanship, fairness, growth/development and enjoyment of the children are some of the values that drive our dedication and philosophy. It is our intention to provide each child with the opportunity to participate in all games.

In addition, some of our other goals include: ● helping build character ● teaching good sportsmanship ● practicing principles of fair play ● providing physical fitness ● having fun Our games are played in Northern New Jersey nestled around the ridges of the Watchung Mountain range, which make up the South Mountain Reservation located in the suburban town of West Orange. The Township of West Orange, as well as the West Orange Board of Education, provide us with and care for the necessary facilities that we utilize all year round.

Registration begins in the Spring, with the first practice being held approximately August 1st. The season runs from September through November.

The Junior Pee Wee (8/9 year olds) and Pee Wee (10/11 year olds) teams offer both A and B games as part of the program designed to get more players more playing time in a true game environment.

Junior Police Academy The West Orange Junior Police Academy is held every summer for West Orange Township children. The program seeks to foster an understanding for the law and respect for themselves as well as other individuals and is targeted for critically developmental age group.

It seeks to encourage responsible citizenship, promote good peer behavior and enhanced communication skills through innovative and exciting programming.

The goal is to have students interact in a pseudo type environment of a police academy while having fun at the same time. The program has featured the NJ State Police Aviation and TEAMS Units along with the Essex County K-9 and Bomb Squad units.

Qualifications: ● Child must be a Township resident ● Child must be 11 - 14 years of age ● The child must have at least a "C" grade average in school although a lesser grade is not an automatic disqualifier. Exceptions are made on a case-by-casebasis. ● The child must not have any conduct or disciplinary problems which may preclude him/her from successful participation in the Academy What to Expect at the Academy: ● An age appropriate pseudo police Academy ● Physical Training (push-ups, sit-ups, light calisthenics, etc.) ● Learn about different facets of policing from various agencies ● Field trips ● Learn Respect, Unity, Discipline and Good Citizenship For more information contact the West Orange Police Department at (973) 325-4038.

September 11th Memorial Located on top of Orange Mountain, the unparalleled view of the New York City skyline and the powerful message of peace and hope has made Eagle Rock September 11th Memorial a special place for people to find comfort and solace. The Memorial honors those who lost their lives and the emergency personnel who responded to this tragedy.

Wall of Remembrance The names of the 3,000 people who lost their lives in the September 11th attacks on the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and the four airline flights are engraved in the 120-foot granite wall.

Police Officer Cap Placed on a short granite pedestal to the right of Gabriella is a replica NYPD cap with “911” engraved on the bill. The engraving below the cap reads: “With deepest gratitude from the people of Essex County, New Jersey, in memory of the 37 New York City Police Officers, 37 Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Officers, and Emergency Services Personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty on September 11, 2001.”

Book of Remembrance The monumental 4-foot by 7-foot bronze book is opened to a page that lists the names of the 58 people from Essex County who lost their lives.

Freedom The 8-foot, bronze, life-size eagle has its wings spread in full flight and stands with a view toward Manhattan and the former site of the Twin Towers.

Gabriella A life-size bronze sculpture of a young girl holding a teddy bear represents the more than 1,000 children who lost a parent, brother, sister, grandparent, or other family member in these tragedies. She reminds us that if these senseless acts had any meaning, it is to help rebuild the lives of these children and do all we can to fulfill the hopes and dreams of those who were lost.

Firefighter Helmet Placed on a short granite pedestal to the left of Gabriella is a replica FDNY helmet with “FDNY 343” engraved on its front. The engraving below the helmet reads: “With deepest gratitude from the people of Essex County, New Jersey, in memory of the 343 New York City Firefighters who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty on September 11, 2001.”

Flight Crew Memorial The simple granite pedestal with a bronze pilot’s cap engraved with pilot’s wings and “911” lists the names and is dedicated to the 33 flight crew members aboard the four airplanes that crashed on September 11, 2001. It was dedicated on September 11, 2009 EMS Tribute A bronze plaque bearing a tribute to the Emergency Medical Services personnel who responded to Ground Zero and aided survivors who crossed the Hudson River is located near the front of the memorial. It was dedicated on September 11, 2011.

Presby Honors September 11th The volunteer Citizens Committee of the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens hybridized (or genetically bred) three varieties of remontant (reblooming) irises to pay tribute to those who lost their lives. The irises are planted at the base of the flagpole and bloom twice a year – in the spring and fall.

World Trade Center Artifact A 7,400-pound steel and concrete piece from the World Trade Center foundation was installed at the site on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 on September 11, 2011.

Remembrance and Rebirth This bronze figure faces the former site of the Twin Towers. His determined, thoughtful expression and illuminated lantern evoke feelings of remembrance, vigilance and the desire to rebuild and renew our faith in ourselves and in our American way of life.

Memorial Grove Each of the seven trees represent one aspect of the tragedy: the World Trade Center North Tower, the World Trade Center South Tower, the Pentagon, American Airlines Flight 11 that crashed into the World Trade Center North Tower, United Airlines Flight 175 that crashed into the World Trade Center South Tower, American Airlines Flight 77 that crashed into the Pentagon and United Airlines Flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania. At the base of each tree is a bronze plaque that is engraved with a reminder about each site or airplane and concludes with “May the world always reflect on their bravery and never forget their sacrifice for our freedom. May those of us left behind find comfort from our sorrow.”

West Orange Arts Council (W.O.A.C.) The all-volunteer West Orange Arts Council (WOAC) operates the West Orange Arts Center, located at 551 Valley Road in the Valley Neighborhood of West Orange, part of the Valley Arts District. Workshops, art exhibits, activities and events showcase local talent, and the WOAC Gift Shop features the unique work of local artists, all available for purchase.

The West Orange Arts Council’s mission is to cultivate and inspire the study and presentation of the arts through arts programming and community outreach. This program provides property tax incentives for West Orange residents to keep their purchasing dollars for goods and services in West Orange.

How does the program work?

When you purchase goods or services from a participating West Orange business, you will receive a credit toward your annual property tax bill.

The program is open to all property owners in West Orange.

I rent my house. Can I benefit from the program?

Yes. When you register your card, check the Renters box and provide your information. Yearly, a check for the total rebates you have accrued will be mailed to you. A $10 check handling fee will be deducted from your accumulated rebates.

Can I obtain and register multiple cards?�Yes. You can register as many cards as you need. If for example your household includes four shoppers, you may obtain four cards and register them all under the same address and block and lot number. West Orange Public Schools

The West Orange Public School District has been educating students since 1895 when the historic Washington Elementary School opened its doors. Today, the district boasts eleven extraordinary schools. The seven traditional neighborhood elementary schools include a very sought after full day kindergarten. Each elementary school feeds an innovative central sixth middle school. Students are offered 7th and 8th grade in two middle schools complete with all the latest technology. The state-of-theart high school campus rivals a small university campus and prepares students for the variety of 21st century opportunities, choices and expectations both socially and academically. In 2022, initiated by advocacy efforts of the West Orange Council of PTA’s the district launched FREE, full day pre-k early childhood education to residents.

Our student body: The 7,000 plus student body speaks more than 48 languages in the home and provides a mix of cultures, socio-economic and religious groups that creates a harmonious microcosm of a global community contained within the borders of West Orange. The diversity is a tremendous strength and contributes greatly to the success of each and every student.

Curriculum and Instruction: The West Orange Board of Education emphasizes educating the ‘whole’ child, and each ‘individual’ student with an educational program tailored to meet each student’s needs. The West Orange Board of Education pays close attention to individualized education with special attention to class sizes maintaining one of the lowest teacherto-student ratios in the state.

Comprehensive: Understanding that children have different learning styles and abilities, through the efforts of a highly qualified and dedicated teaching and administrative staff, all West Orange public school students receive the highest quality of education in each and every West Orange school building.

Extracurricular: The West Orange school district provides hundreds of extracurricular activities and clubs, after school programs and sports programs. West Orange High School is home to a brand new athletic complex complete with top-level playing fields, courts, track and facilities that are the envy of the region.

The West Orange Board of Education is committed to a strong cultural arts program.

Performing arts, music and fine arts education begins at the elementary school level and is provided as part of the curriculum throughout the K-12 program.

Physical fitness and health awareness remains an important focus for the West Orange Board of Education. Health and Physical Education programs are mandatory for every student in all grades. Nutrition and wellness programs are a district priority integrated through a nutrition-conscious food service with healthy lunches and snacks served in every school. The athletic program offers a broad range of award winning sports programs that prepare each student athlete for excellence. Most graduates are scholar athletes that have more than satisfied the requirements for post secondary athletic opportunities.

Special Services: The Department of Special Services serves approximately 1,300 classified students both in district and out of district. We provide instruction for students from age 3 through 21. In keeping with state and federal mandates, instruction is provided in Least Restrictive Environment. Our 3-5 year old students are currently placed at The Betty Maddalena Early Learning Center, which houses our Preschool Disabilities Program. Opportunities are provided for full day, half day, and inclusion classes based upon student needs and IEP mandates. At the elementary level, we provide instruction inclusion settings, In-Class Support settings, pull out Resource Program instruction, self-contained classes for students with Learning and Language Disabilities, Mild to Moderate Cognitive Impairments, and students with Autism.

At the secondary level, instruction is provided in Inclusion settings, In-Class Support settings, Resource Program classes, and Departmentalized classes. Programs mirror the general education as much as possible, while providing modifications and accommodations included in the students’ IEP’s. There are classes specifically for students with Mild to Moderate Cognitive Impairments and Autism. Additionally, there is an extension of the traditional program specifically designed for students between the ages of 18-21. Vocational training, social skills and job skills are the focus of this specialized program.

West Orange Public Library

West Orange Public Library is now at its brand new location at 10 Rooney Circle! The new accommodations include an expanded children’s area with its own programming room, a huge teen area, study rooms, extra meeting rooms, beautiful views of the surrounding hills, an outdoor patio and so much more.

As a member of the Bergen County Cooperative Lending System (BCCLS) library consortium, all residents have access to nearly 6 million physical items, including more than 3.6 million books from 77 libraries across Essex, Bergen, Hudson, and Passaic Counties. In addition, through our website are available digital resources such as downloadable e-books, audiobooks, magazines, music, databases for research and more.

At the library you will find weekly programs that range from preschool story times to Friday movies, art classes, Lego club for kids, English classes for speakers of other languages, STEAM programs, and book clubs for literary lovers of all ages. The library regularly has special programs throughout the year such as Black History, Women’s History, and Hispanic Heritage Month. The library partners with other organizations from West Orange throughout the year.

Friends of the West Orange Library is an organization residents can join and support.

Their mission is to preserve, support and strengthen the West Orange Public Library. They encourage members to work on various committees, to participate in the meeting on the third Monday of the month and to attend special events and to join our annual receptions.

The Downtown West Orange Alliance The Downtown West Orange Alliance (DWOA) is a nonprofit organization responsible for managing the Special Improvement District (SID) in West Orange, NJ. Established in August 1998 through local ordinance, the SID encompasses key neighborhoods such as Tory Corner, Eagle Rock, St. Mark’s, and the Valley, with a mission to promote economic revitalization. The DWOA serves to foster development while preserving the distinct residential, historic, and commercial characteristics of the downtown area. We achieve this through several key areas of focus: 1. Economic Revitalization ● Promote business growth by attracting new businesses and supporting existing ones. ● Foster a vibrant commercial environment to boost local economies.
