By EmilyAnn Jackman Staff Writer In a world where marriages don’t seem to last very long, when a husband and wife have been together for 70 years, it’s remarkable. A Union couple is set to celebrate this milestone on Thursday, Aug. 19.

Union High School Class of 1947 graduate Charles W. Sommer Jr. and his wife, Rose, Bloomfield High School Class of 1947, both now 92 years old, wed on Aug. 19, 1951. Charles said theirs was a whirlwind romance.

“We both were 22 years old when we got married,” Charles said in an Aug. 13 interview at the Sommer home. “We got married in Bloomfield Sacred Heart Church. We met at work, and we were employed by Firemen’s (Insurance Company) Loyalty Group in Newark. I was an assistant casualty underwriter in the casualty department and my wife, Rose, was a filing clerk. She had an occasion to come around to my department, and we struck a friendship. Within six months, we were engaged and, six months later, we were married.

“In 1950, I was in the Air National Guard, and I had to report for summer camp, and I was going with two other friends from Bloomfield, so I arranged to stay overnight at Rose’s house,” he continued. “That’s how I know that it was probably around August of 1949 that we met.

Then, of course, we were married in 1951 and we continued working together for about five years.”

For their honeymoon, he said, they went to Atlantic City for two weeks. When they returned, they had to find a place to live, so they got a furnished room in Bloomfield — just a bedroom and a kitchenette.

“We weren’t able to cook or anything like that, just a hot plate was there, and we had to go out for our meals,” said Charles.

“Then we decided we couldn’t live like that. So, we then moved to the (Maple) Garden Apartments in Irvington and we were on the sixth floor there, when they See AFTER, Page 4

President nominates Kean VP for Federal Education Foundation Board President Joe Biden has nominated Barbara George Johnson, vice president of external affairs, and urban policy and research at Kean University, as a member of the board of trustees of the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.

The nomination affirms Kean’s commitment to research as the university pursues a Carnegie R2 research designation.

The foundation, established by Congress in 1986 to honor the late U.S. senator and statesman Barry Goldwater, provides scholarships to college sophomores and juniors to pursue research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering.

“I am excited and honored to be named to this prestigious national board in higher education,” Johnson said.

“Particularly within the STEM fields, it’s important to ensure that we are supporting young scholars from all walks of life and offering opportunities that expand innovation in our country through their experiences, vision and research.”

Johnson has more than 30 years of experience as a public policy professional in New Jersey and has shaped economic, health and social policy in the state. At the John S. Watson Institute for Public Policy, she oversees the work and mission of the New Jersey Urban Mayors Association, a one-of-a-kind organization of 32 urban mayors engaged in collective policymaking. The institute focuses on urban environmental policy, public health policy, early childhood policy, and instruction in leadership development and civic engagement.

Johnson has an extensive background in health care, public health and public policy. Early in her career, she spearheaded the development of the Newark Kids Initiative for the Newark Health Department, which focused on health care and social services for children affected by domestic violence. She also served on the Centers for Disease Control–funded Newark Prevention Marketing Initiative and other task forces on HIV/AIDS. Her health care experience includes having served as a public health adviser for the Maternal Child Health Division of the New York City Department of Health and later as the director for the Family Life Institute of

Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan New Jersey. She was also legislative director for the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey.

“Barbara George Johnson’s breadth of experience in public policy, research and higher education brings a unique perspective to the Goldwater Foundation’s work,” said Joseph Youngblood, Kean senior vice president for external affairs. “She has a keen understanding of issues facing people who live in the nation’s urban communities and ways to address inequities through policy and action.”

Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree in biology and technology from Cornell University, a master’s degree in public health from Columbia University and a law degree from Rutgers–Newark Law School. She is a proud member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

Kean Stage celebrates return to indoor performances this fall Kean Stage has announced its return to in-person, indoor performances this fall for its 12th season.

“Welcome back! We are so excited to open our doors and invite you into our theaters for our 2021-2022 season,” said Steve Cochran, manager of Kean Stage.

“No one could have expected the pandemic to derail our reopening as long as it did, but here we are, ready to provide you with world-class entertainment at Kean University. As we continue into the year, additional artists will be announced. Be assured, we are being diligent in providing a safe environment for our patrons, staff and artists.”

Opening Kean Stage’s 2021-2022 season is Black Violin on Friday, Sept. 24, at 7:30 p.m at Wilkins Theatre at Kean University in Union. Wil B. and Kev Marcus started out covering hip-hop songs on their violins and soon realized they had something that audiences had never heard before, a blend of classical, hip-hop, jazz, rhythm and blues, and reggae. Black Violin has collaborated with a diverse group of artists, including Kanye West, Tom Petty, Alicia Keys, Aerosmith and Wu-Tang Clan.

The a cappella group Voctave will be the first performance at Enlow Recital Hall in Hillside this season, on Sunday, Oct. 3, at 2 p.m. Voctave sings original arrangements of Disney and Broadway hits and has collaborated with the Boston Pops, the London Symphony, Marvin Hamlisch and David Foster.

Join Kean Stage on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 7:30 p.m., for an evening with singer, songwriter and composer Jimmy Webb at Enlow Recital Hall. Webb is the only artist to receive Grammy Awards for music, lyrics and orchestration. Among his many timeless hits are “The Worst That Could Happen,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Wichita Lineman,” “Up, Up and Away” and “MacArthur Park.”

Broadway leading man Norm Lewis performs at Enlow Recital Hall on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 7:30 p.m. Lewis will be returning to Broadway this fall, starring in “Chicken and Biscuits” at the Circle in the Square Theatre. He recently appeared in the Broadway revival of “Once on This Island” and as Sweeney Todd in the OffBroadway production of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” at the Barrow Street Theatre, receiving an AUDELCO Award for his performance. In May 2014, he made history as the first black Phantom in “The Phantom of the Opera” on Broadway.

Rose said there were struggles when her husband was making $25 a week. He left his employer to eventually make $50.

Luckily, Charles’ father, Union Tax Assessor Charles Sommer Sr., was able to help the newlyweds get on their feet. His son went on to have a 50-year career in the insurance business, starting out as a casualty underwriter, then a life producer, then working for three major insurance companies, retiring in 1998.

The couple then went to live on Montrose Terrace in Irvington, a side street near the parkway, in a second-story, oneand-a-half apartment. One-and-a-halfs were typically a bedroom, a kitchen and a den. The couple stayed there for a short time before deciding it was time to have a baby. Rose became pregnant in 1955 with the couple’s first child and stopped working soon after.

The couple then moved to Sheridan Street, near Chancellor Avenue, where their new baby, Susan Junis, had her own room.

“The baby got a bedroom, and we slept in the dining room,” Charles said. “There, we had a first-floor apartment and that consisted of a living room, dining room/bedroom, a kitchen and a bathroom. We stayed there for four years and then moved to Union.”

In Union, the couple rented the first floor of a house on Steuben Street off Morris Avenue near Union High School and were there until 1967. Charles owned five lots on Sinclair Avenue at the time and was able to build the house they currently live in today. The couple ultimately had three children, Susan Junis, David and Brian; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Rose has some precious mementos, including the yellow socks she knit for Charles in 1949. She cherishes the heirloom and the accompanying note she wrote.

“To Charlie dear, it took me time with each stitch in mind to make these socks for you. All day and night. So, treat them well, and enjoy them, too. As all my efforts were for you. Rose,” the note reads.

Despite her 2005 pancreatic cancer diagnosis and her recent Whipple procedure to treat the disease, Rose is a survivor. It’s hard for her to walk distances without her cane, but that didn’t stop her from grabbing another cherished heirloom, her high school yearbook. One page in it has Frank Sinatra’s autograph. Rose had traveled out west with her yearbook after her high school graduation to see her sister, Clara, who lived in Albuquerque, N.M., and the two went to Los Angeles to find Frank Sinatra’s house in Malibu Beach.

signed a special message to Rose in her yearbook: “To Clara and Rose, Best wishes of Bloomfield High. Always, Frank Sinatra Jr., June 22, 1947.”

Charles and Rose admit that getting married when they were 22 years old wasn’t easy.

“We were like two children getting married,” said Charles. “I was an only child, and Rose was one of six. It was a huge difference. I got to the point where, when I met Rose, I realized that she was the one. The only problem that we had was because of not being paid enough.

“We don’t regret anything. We’ve had our problems just like everyone else. As far as regrets are concerned, we’ve never regretted anything,” he continued. “We rely on each other, and family can only help you but so far. We just hope we can continue. We’re very proud of our family — our children, the grandchildren and the great-grandchildren that we have. Everyone has grown up the way we taught them.

It’s been a wonderful life with Rose.”

Rose agreed.

“We’ve had our ups and downs, but we came through, especially with my illness,” she said. “This illness took the life out of

me, and just walking from the door to the next house is important for me to do, but it’s hard. It hasn’t been easy, but this is where we are — 70 years.”

STEM education program expands thanks to state funding Math for America, a STEM education nonprofit organization, announced with partners Montclair State University, Princeton University and Rowan University that the New Jersey STEM Innovation Fellowship will open its program to include science educators; this expansion to include science teachers in addition to math teachers comes as a result of $100,000 in new funding from Gov. Phil Murphy and the New Jersey state Legislature. The fellowship, originally created for New Jersey mathematics teachers and designed to improve STEM teaching and learning in the state, will welcome its second cohort this August due to continued funding from private partners.

The second cohort of New Jersey STEM Innovation Fellows, who were accepted into the program in June, consists of 30 elementary educators representing 27 districts and 30 schools. More than one-third of these educators work in schools where more than 60 percent of students receive free and reduced lunch.

Among the 2021 New Jersey STEM Innovation Fellows is Deanne LaRue, a teacher at Livingston Elementary School in the Township of Union School District.

The one-year renewable fellowship for public elementary school STEM teachers comes with a $5,000 stipend.

Fellows will attend a two-day virtual summer institute, followed by monthly workshops hosted by participating universities in their region, where they implement innovative, research-based teaching practices shown to help students — particularly those in high-needs schools — develop the flexible problemsolving skills they need to thrive in STEM subjects. The New Jersey STEM Innovation Fellowship is based on Math for America’s proven teacher fellowship program in New York City.

Union woman, six others take oath as CASA volunteers for foster youth The latest class of community members to step up and train as advocates for Union County foster youth has taken its oath before a Union County Superior Court judge and is now ready to be matched to its cases as the newest volunteers with Court Appointed Special Advocates of Union County.

The nonprofit, which began in Union County in 2005, recruits, trains, supports and supervises volunteers to serve local children removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect or abandonment, and living in foster care. It is the only nonprofit serving as extra eyes and ears for Union County judges hearing youth cases.

Superior Court Judge James Hely presided over the swearing-in ceremony via Zoom; once matched to a

youth or sibling set, advocates will begin putting their 30 hours of training into practice. The newest CASA volunteers for Union County are Janet Colman of Warren, Komal Nankani of Summit, Karime Herrera and James Walker Jr. of Elizabeth, Mike Caporaso of Lebanon, Regina O’Connor of Fanwood, and Veronica Gardner of Union.

Volunteers need no special prior background or experience to serve as advocates; each undergoes a thorough training process and is supported by CASA staff. Successful advocates bring with them varied life experiences and professional backgrounds. No matter the age of the youths to whom they are assigned, advocates commit to being a consistent presence, as many

foster youths experience a revolving door of professionals in addition to the separation from family members CASA volunteers ensure that needs are identified and recommendations are made to the judge and stakeholders, changing the trajectory of a child’s life for the better.

When assigned to a case, the CASA volunteer has access to the youth, foster parents, doctors, caseworkers, therapists and teachers, in order to identify and report to the judge any concerns and needs.

NJ State Council on the Arts approves more than $35.6M in grants The New Jersey State Council on the Arts recently awarded more than $35.6 million in grants to support more than 700 arts organizations, projects and artists throughout the state. The grants were approved at the arts council’s 55th annual meeting, held virtually. The awards are part of the largest state appropriation the council has ever received in its 55-year history: $31.9 million as part of the state budget approved by Gov. Phil Murphy last month. These grant awards also included $7.5 million in Coronavirus Relief Funds, which were signed into law by Murphy earlier this year as part of a multibill package aimed at economic recovery.

“The innovation New Jersey’s arts community has shown over these last 16 months is absolutely aweinspiring,” Secretary of State Tahesha Way said at the meeting. “The arts have been a crucial source of healing and connection throughout the pandemic, and I am

proud to work closely with the state arts council as they lead the field with responsive grants and services so people can continue to enjoy and engage with New Jersey arts.”

In Union County, the Union County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs received $434,439 for its local arts program. Additionally, Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company in Union received $62,964 for dance; and Kean University’s Premiere Stages in Union received $42,228 for theater.

“We are grateful to Gov. Murphy and the legislature for this monumental increase in funding and for recognizing the need for robust public support of the arts right now,” council Chairperson Elizabeth Mattson said. “This funding is not only vital to ensuring the arts can continue to move forward and innovate, but will support important work to foster a more equitable and inclusive

arts community. We know there is still much work to be done, and we look forward to working alongside our partners and colleagues in the field as we embark on a new chapter together.”

While $35.6 million of the Council’s budget was voted on at the meeting, a remaining $4.1 million will be granted out later this year as part of a new capital needs–based program.

In line with the council’s priority to help achieve fieldwide stability and recovery, multiyear commitments and statewide service initiatives for the field have been increased. In line with the council’s priority to broaden access and impact, funding for the council’s Local Arts Program, which serves all 21 counties, has been tripled. To lessen the administrative burden for grantees, requirements have been temporarily amended, as feasible.

Jonathan Matthew Mota

Mota graduates Jonathan Matthew Mota, of Union, recently graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y. Mota earned a Bachelor of Science and a commission in the U.S. armed forces. He also earned a Merchant Marine officer license, qualifying him to serve as an officer on any ship in the U.S. flag merchant marine. Mota is a graduate of Union High School.

The United States Merchant Marine Academy is one of five U.S. federal service academies. It educates and graduates licensed Merchant Marine officers to serve the nation during peace and war. In addition to the rigorous academic and physical requirements for admission, applicants must be nominated by their congressional representative or senator.

Mota was nominated by former U.S. Rep. Leonard Lance.

Taking names at URI

Northeastern University, located in Boston, Mass., recently named the following Union students to the dean’s list for the spring 2021 semester: Thomas Finnerty, Ashley Lazo, Aliah Mahadeo and Hannah Nivar.

To achieve the dean’s list distinction, students must carry a full program of at least four courses, have a quality-point average of 3.5 or greater out of a possible 4.0 and carry no single grade lower than a C- during the course of their college career.

Enrolling at NYIT New York Institute of Technology, located in Old Westbury, N.Y., welcomes Union’s Kevin Zheng to its Class of 2025.

Zheng plans to study computer science.

Antunes earns BA Victoria Antunes, of Union, graduated from Endicott College, located in Beverly, Mass., with a Bachelor of Arts in history on May 22.

Perotti’s traces its roots to 1957, when David and Mario Perrotti immigrated to the United States from Vallata, Italy, at the ages of 10 and 12, alongside their parents and seven siblings, where they settled in Elizabeth.

The two brothers began working at a local, old-time pork store, where they learned the art of butchering and the meat market industry. Little did they know that they would become lifelong business partners. In the fall of 1967, David and Mario opened Perrotti’s Quality Meats, with the hope of turning their newly found craft into a business of their own. More than 50 years later, their business still operates on the corner of S. Union Avenue and Cherry Street in Cranford.

Cougar Headquarters CHQ opened its doors on the morning of August 31, 2011. Later that same day, Hurricane Irene hit Cranford hard. “It will always be a memorable day for us” says owner Donna Marino. So many of our family and friends came out to show their support and wish us well. Then 24 hours later we were organizing our first fundraiser, selling shirts to raise funds for Cranford Family Care who in turn helped residents who needed assistance with hurricane damage.

It’s been ten years since then and the store has expanded, evolved and become a true part of Cranford’s landscape. A destination for all to shop for their favorite Cranford themed apparel. CHQ offers Varsity Jackets, Spiritwear and Custom Screenprinting. In addition to the traditional hometown apparel CHQ offers Cranford themed glassware, pennants, flags, magnets, hats, totes and so much more!

One of CHQ’s premiere services includes one-on-one private Varsity Jacket fittings in their retail showroom. Upon ordering a jacket each student receives a complimentary t-shirt exclusive to them, as well as $5 gift card to a local pizzeria.

North American Partners in Anesthesia joins team at USC North American Partners in Anesthesia has joined the team at Union Surgery Center, part of Atlantic Health System’s Overlook Medical Center–Union Campus, to provide reliable, expert anesthesiology care for ambulatory surgery patients.

As of last spring, NAPA anesthesiologists and certified registered nurse anesthetists began providing anesthesia and perioperative care at Union Surgery Center in Union. NAPA is the largest singlespecialty anesthesia and perioperative management company in the United States, with more than 5,000 clinicians

providing anesthesia at hundreds of hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers from coast to coast.

Union Surgery Center is located at 1000 Galloping Hill Road, Union. NEWS BRIEFS Union seniors meet again The Union Township Active Retirees, aka the Monday Club, had not been able to meet since March 2020. First it was because of the COVID-19 pandemic, then it was because the township had sold the senior center building and property on Bonnell Court.

The township has leased a building on Rahway Avenue and will fix it up to be a temporary senior center, but this will not be ready until September.

Thinking outside the box, the club offi-

cers met with Pastor Bobbie Arrowsmith of Connecticut Farms Church at 888 Stuyvesant Ave. in Union. The Monday Club will meet there every Monday at 10 a.m.

Union County offers grab-and-go meals at senior centers The Union County Board of County Commissioners has announced that boxlunch meals will be available to seniors beginning in May, through the grab-andgo program. The program is run through the Union County Division on Aging and Disability Resource Connection, in the Department of Human Services.

“This alternative dining option will provide seniors with access to nutritious lunches, while reducing the risk of contracting or spreading the COVID-19 virus,” said County Commissioner Chairperson Alexander Mirabella.

The grab-and-go program is for seniors ages 60 and older who reside in Union County and are not receiving home-deliv-

ered meals from Meals on Wheels.

It will be available at 19 senior centers and senior housing sites throughout the county every Tuesday and Thursday, beginning on Tuesday, May 4.

Reservations are required and are available by calling the Division on Aging by 9 a.m. on the previous Thursday for Tuesday pickup and by 9 a.m. the previous Monday for Thursday pickup.

A small voluntary donation is suggested for each meal. Any eligible senior can use the grab-and-go program at any of the

Artist focuses on spirituality in exhibition to debut at Kean U. Contemporary artist Knowledge Bennett will open a multimedia art exploration at Kean University, beginning Wednesday, Sept. 1. “Pieces of a Man,” Bennett’s latest body of work, focuses on matters of science, mathematics, spirituality and societal issues. Bennett’s work will be featured in both indoor and outdoor galleries across the 185-acre Kean University campus.

“Studying, designing, photographing and painting through the COVID-19 lockdown reminded me of what it meant to be ‘still,’ yet not necessarily sit still,” Bennett said. “This latest work of mine is a journey through my own psyche, an inventory of self, a reckoning of my innermost thoughts and feelings.”

In “Pieces of a Man,” Bennett expounds on his minimalist approach, utilizing fundamental geometric shapes, the process of repetition, and his love of numbers

and the usage of them to develop a coded language.

The Galleries at Kean University serves as the ideal location to feature the New Jersey native’s latest work in support of its mission of showcasing carefully curated exhibitions that serve as impactful vehicles for social change and awareness of global issues.

“Knowledge Bennett’s art speaks to a nation grappling with issues of social justice,” said Kean President Lamont O. State awards nearly $30 million in federal funding to NJ colleges Gov. Phil Murphy and Secretary of Higher Education Brian Bridges announced in July the awardees of nearly $30 million in federal funding that will be distributed to New Jersey institutions of higher education to support the core priorities of the State Plan for Higher Education and address the impacts of COVID-19 on postsecondary students.

Approximately $28.5 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Education, through the second round of Governor’s Emergency Education Relief funding, will be awarded to 35 public and public-mission private institutions that receive state operating aid.

These institutions will implement vetted best practices that increase college completion, address barriers to student success and develop sustainable systemic reforms. In addition, more than $1 million will be awarded to 11

public institutions to combat food insecurity among students.

“Our institutions of higher education have provided a high quality of education to our students throughout the pandemic, despite challenging circumstances,” Murphy said. “Supporting our institutions will continue to be a priority as they work to provide an equitable educational experience for students, prepare them for the jobs of the future and meet challenges ahead.”

“Through this critical federal funding, New Jersey is prioritizing students’ needs and ensuring our workforce will be ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s post-pandemic economy,” Bridges said. “We appreciate that institutions are committing to this challenge and look forward to learning from the innovative best practices implemented, as we strive to meet the state’s goal of 65

percent of residents earning a highquality credential by 2025.”

“Worrying about where your next meal will come from should not be part of the daily challenges that academics and extracurricular activities present to students,” said Assemblywoman Mila Jasey, who represents New Jersey’s 27th Legislative District. “This funding will ease the worries of students and their families, and work towards mitigating food insecurity on college campuses.”

A total of 35 institutions will be receiving $28.5 million in funding to support the launch of the Opportunity Meets Innovation Challenge, a competitive grant program to implement best practices and develop sustainable systemwide reforms as the state builds longterm resilience.

The following institutions in Union County will receive OMIC grant monies:

Kean University will receive $832,566, and Union County College will receive $998,800.

More than $1 million in funding is supporting the goals of the Hunger-Free Campus Act, signed by Murphy in 2019 to establish a grant program to address food insecurity among students enrolled at public institutions. Funding is available only to public institutions that received “Hunger-Free Campus” designation for meeting all requirements during the 2020-21 academic year.

Kean University will receive $56,200 from the HFCA grant monies.

Additional institutions may have obtained the “Hunger-Free Campus” designation for academic year 2020-21 but not have received funding.

Defending state champs get ready for season

By JR Parachini Sports Editor For the first time since the 1994 season — when legendary head coach Lou Rettino was still at the helm of the Farmers — Union football is a defending state champion.

The Farmers were fortunate to get in seven games during the pandemic last season, winning four. However, there were no playoffs to qualify for, in a season that commenced the first week in October and concluded, for several schools, on Thanksgiving.

Union defeated Paterson Kennedy, West Orange and Clifton to capture the North 2, Group 5, state championship for the first time in 2019, with a 12-0 record that closed at 12-1 following a regional game loss to North 1, Group 5, state champ Ridgewood at Giants Stadium.

“We want to be the first Union team to go 13-0,” said senior strong safety Kendall Bournes, who is one of six returning starters on the defensive side of the ball.

“When asked what his goals were for his senior season, Rutgers commit Davison Igbinosun said, “Just one: to win a state championship.”

When Union won two years ago it was the program’s first state title in 26 years — the first since the 1993 squad threepeated as North 2, Group 4, state champions.

Union ready to defend its state title this season (Continued from Page 17) home game at Cooke Memorial Field is scheduled to take place Friday, Sept. 24, vs. Elizabeth.

Union is one of five teams in the Big Central Conference’s Division 5A this season, along with Elizabeth, Plainfield, Watchung Hills and Westfield.

“Right now we’re just competing,” said head coach Lou Grasso Jr., in his ninth season in charge. “I like what we’re doing.

We just had a great week. We’re trying to develop depth now.”

Competing at times for quarterback are seniors Jaden Stewart, a left-handed passer, and Miles McEachin.

“Both kids have good arms,” Grasso said. “Jaden can run the option and is very athletic. Miles had a great off-season

and is a bit more of a pocket guy, but can also move.”

Senior running back/linebacker Ashan Harris just transferred in from Rahway, while seniors Ahron McReynolds and Tyler Malik-Ismail are Mater Dei transfers.

Nick Rua-Broadnax, at left tackle on offense and at tackle on defense, is another returning starter on both sides of the ball, as is Davison Igbinosun, rated as one of the top players in New Jersey.

Igbinosun was a key player as a sophomore for Union’s 2019 state championship squad.

“His leadership has been fantastic,” Grasso said.

Igbinosun is Union’s free safety on defense and will also be a threat at receiv-

er and running back on offense.

“We’re going to try to use him on offense in many different ways,” Grasso said.

Other Union home games are scheduled vs. Westfield on Oct. 1, BridgewaterRaritan on Oct. 8 and Watchung Hills on Oct. 22.

Westfield is scheduled to be the last Union County team to open its season this year, with the Blue Devils set to host St. Joseph’s of Metuchen on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m. at Gary Kehler Stadium.

Westfield played the fewest games of any Union County squad last year, getting in only two, both losses.

The playoffs are scheduled to commence the first weekend in November.

This will be the final year of single regional games that follow the state championship contests. Beginning next year, the playoffs will be extended to play down to group state champions in all five public school sizes.

Acting AG announces settlement with EPA to protect NJ from air pollution Acting Attorney General Andrew J. Bruck announced July 29 that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has agreed to take action on air pollution reduction plans submitted by certain “upwind” states as part of a settlement reached between EPA and “downwind” states New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Delaware and Massachusetts, as well as New York City. The action resolves a lawsuit brought by the states and city earlier this year against the Trump administration’s EPA over its alleged failure to fulfill its responsibility under the federal Clean Air Act to ensure the control of upwind sources of smogforming pollution.

The lawsuit alleged that the unchecked pollution from upwind states creates an ongoing threat to the health of residents in New Jersey and the other downwind states, and makes it more difficult for the downwind states to meet federal air quality standards.

Under the July 29 settlement, the

EPA must approve or disapprove emission control plans, known as State Implementation Plans, submitted by the upwind states of Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Texas and West Virginia by April 30, 2022. The EPA must finalize federal replacement plans for any SIPs it disapproves by Dec. 15, 2022.

Following a notice and comment period required by the Clean Air Act, the proposed consent decree will be sent to the U.S. District Court for approval.

“This is an important win for New Jersey, its residents and its environment,” Bruck said. “For too long, polluted air has been blowing downwind into New Jersey from other states, and today’s settlement requires the federal government to finally take action to address the harm. This is yet another victory in our fight for environmental justice in the Garden State.”

The Clean Air Act requires every state to evaluate whether its emissions of regulated pollutants “substantially con-

tribute” to any other state’s inability to attain federal air quality standards. If so, the offending state must submit a SIP describing its efforts to reduce the effect of its emissions on other states.

Under the Clean Air Act, the EPA has 12 months to approve or disapprove SIPs and must adopt a federal plan for any state whose SIP it disapproves.

“Improving air quality for all of our residents is a priority of Gov. Murphy’s administration,” N.J. Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette said. “While New Jersey has consistently taken strong actions over the years to address the pollutants that cause ozone, the same cannot be said for many of the upwind states that generate these pollutants that are carried by prevailing winds to our state. Addressing ozone pollutants requires a strong federal hand.”

While the ozone layer around the planet protects Earth from harmful

ultraviolet rays from the sun, ozone itself — a colorless unstable toxic gas with a pungent odor and powerful oxidizing properties — can be harmful to health. When inhaled, ozone can damage the lungs; relatively low amounts of ozone can cause chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath and throat irritation.

Ozone and smog — caused largely by nitrogen oxide emissions — can damage the lining of the lungs and lung tissue and aggravate asthma. Children and individuals with respiratory conditions are particularly susceptible. People of color and those living below the federal poverty standard disproportionately bear the consequences of ozone pollution. Even though New Jersey has some of the strictest limits on nitrogen oxide in the United States, ground-level ozone in certain parts of the state exceeds federal standards, largely due to emissions from coalburning power plants and other pollution sources in upwind states.

Premiere Stages announces return to in-person performances this fall Premiere Stages at Kean University has announced its return to in-person, indoor performances, with a full production in the Bauer Boucher Theatre Center in September and a staged reading in the Liberty Hall Academic Center in October.

Premiere Stages’ 17th condensed season will kick off with Erik Gernand’s “Year One,” a finalist in the 2020/2021 Premiere Play Festival, the theater’s annual competition for unproduced scripts written by playwrights “affiliated with the greater metropolitan area.” Following “Year One” will be a staged reading of “Certain Aspects of Conflict in the Negro Family,” a new play about the 1967 Plainfield riots by Tylie Shider, recipient of the 2021-22 Liberty Live Commission. The Liberty Live Commission is awarded biennially, in partnership with Kean University’s Liberty Hall, and seeks to develop and produce new plays that celebrate New Jersey’s rich and diverse history.

“We greatly appreciate how supportive our patrons have been of our virtual and outdoor events, but there is nothing like the shared experience of watching a live performance in a theater,” said Producing Artistic Director John J. Wooten.

The production was nominated for an American Theatre Critics Association New Play Award, and the play was subsequently produced in New York by the Barrow Group. Gernand’s plays have been in production and/or development at theaters including Redtwist, American Theater Company, Chicago Dramatists and Actors Theatre of Louisville. Gernand is also a filmmaker. His award-winning short films have been screened at more than 100 film festivals around the world, including SXSW, Chicago Inter-

national Film Festival and Cinequest, and broadcast on IFC, PBS and the Logo Channel. Gernand is an associate professor of instruction in the Radio/Television/Film department at Northwestern University.

for the promise of a better future, but, as the riots begin, the family contemplates a return to the South. Shider is a two-time recipient of the Jerome Fellowship at the Playwrights’ Center and an I Am Soul playwright-in-residence at the National Black Theatre. He has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Delaware State University and a master’s degree in dramatic writing from New York University. A member of the Dramatist Guild, he currently teaches playwriting at Augsburg University. “Certain Aspects of Conflict in the Negro Family” is made possible in part by a 2021 History, Education, Arts Reaching Thousands Grant from the Union County Board of County Commissioners.
