Star CHS football player heads to Indianapolis to play with the Colts

By Amanda Valentovic Staff Writer Will Fries recently moved to Indiana, for work.

The Cranford native and former Cranford High School football player was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts during the 2021 NFL draft in May and headed west in July to begin preseason training camp. Cranford residents sent him off at Cougar Headquarters, a localspirit clothing and gear store, on Thursday, July 15, but not before taking photos and having him sign headshots, footballs and other gear.

“You don’t know what’s going to happen,” Fries said in an interview with Union County LocalSource at the event, about the anticipation of being drafted.

“I’m really lucky to have been drafted.”

An offensive lineman, Fries played college football at Penn State. He received an honorable mention for the Freshman All-American Team after his freshman year in 2017, an honorable mention for the All–Big Ten Team as a junior in 2019 and was an All–Big Ten selection as a senior in 2020. Also as a senior, he won the Penn State Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

Fries is one of six former Penn State players drafted into the NFL this year; he was one of three in a row chosen from the school in the seventh round. His roommate, Michal Menet, was picked by the Arizona Cardinals a few minutes before he was chosen.

In May, Fries spent some time in Indianapolis, getting a feel for where he’ll be playing when the NFL 2021 season begins on Sunday, Sept. 12, when the Colts play the Seattle Seahawks. He met the coaches and staff, and said he is looking forward to meeting veteran players.

“I went out in May and got to see the culture,” he said. “It’s really nice out

There are veterans on the team he’s looking forward to playing with, including offensive linemen Quenton Nelson, Eric William Fisher and Ryan Kelly.

“It’s a proven line,” Fries said. “Once the veterans get back, we have to get their stamp of approval. It’s hard work, but I’m looking forward to making the most of it.”

A 2016 graduate of CHS, Fries was on

the high school football team that went undefeated in 2015 and won the North 2, Group 3 state championship against Chatham. He was surprised by the number of people who came to see him off at Cranford’s apparel store on Centennial Avenue.

“I didn’t know what to expect, but so many have come out,” Fries said. “It’s a great community and a great town that’s always supported me.”

U.S. Secretary of Transportation visits area to talk about rail, bus service U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttegieg and Rep. Tom Malinowski, 7th District, met on Monday, Aug. 9, with mayors from towns on the Raritan Valley Line to hear firsthand about train and bus service into New York.

The event with the RVL Mayors Alliance took place in Westfield and was also attended by commissioners from Union and Somerset counties.

Mayor Kathleen Miller Prunty, an organizer of the RVL Mayors Alliance and longtime member of the Raritan Valley Rail Coalition, made a presentation about the importance of building the new Gateway Program and getting Midtown Direct trains for RVL riders.

“Direct trains into NY Penn would greatly improve quality of life for commuters and put our towns in a bet-

ter position to compete for investment, new businesses and enable employers to compete for younger, skilled talent from Manhattan and, ultimately, increase property values,” said Prunty.

“As mayors, we have been vocal and active supporters of the Gateway, Portal Bridge and Hunter Flyover projects,” she said. “It is shocking to me that anyone would oppose replacing tunnels and bridges that are more than 100 years old and damaged during Superstorm Sandy and put hundreds of thousands of people at risk every day. If this project went ahead years ago, we would have new tunnels in place and a safer, more efficient train service.

“An emergency tunnel shutdown will severely disrupt how people get to work and deliver goods and mean

more cars and trucks on already crowded highways that will spill onto local roads, negatively affecting neighborhoods and contributing to an increase in auto emissions,” continued the mayor.

“It would be devastating to the economy, businesses and quality of life for this region,” said Prunty. “Our communities will feel the impact of depressed property values when our commuter towns lose their appeal. Our small businesses, still recovering from the pandemic, will be clobbered once again.”

“RVL mayors are mindful there is no quick or easy solution, and we recognize that changes of this scale take time,” she added. “That said, we remain steadfast and determined in our mission to improve the commuting experience for residents, employees and visitors to our communities.”

Artist creates children’s novel to inspire love of history

By Sean Quinn Correspondent In 1972, when he was a student at the Newark School of Art, John Quinn was painting an underwater scene for an illustration class when a tiny bit of watercolor dripped onto the bottom corner of his canvas. To most, this splotch would be nothing more than a small imperfection, but Quinn couldn’t help but think it looked like a prancing pony. And he wondered what a young horse would be doing under the sea.

Nearly 50 years later, Quinn came up with an answer and decided to share it with the world as a children’s book. “The Sea Pony,” which can be purchased now as a Kindle book on Amazon, tells the story of a mystical species of horses; these horses love to dive off cliffs, explore sunken ships and have fun on their own island. But when invading humans take a few of these creatures back to the mainland, the ponies will experience adventures they couldn’t have imagined, all while trying to return to their homeland.

“The Sea Pony” is a fantastical tale, but much of the story is grounded in reality.

That is because Quinn conducted copious amounts of research into how horses were used by civilizations throughout history and infused his book with happenings

inspired by actual people and events. As a result, he hopes his readers will learn something, in addition to being entertained.

“My goal in writing ‘The Sea Pony’ was to inspire curiosity in readers,” Quinn said. “I’d love it if children, maybe along with their parents or older siblings reading with them, would do their own research into the facts behind the story.

There’s a world of information out there for them to explore. This could inspire a lifetime of learning.”

Children could benefit from learning more about the past, considering recent education statistics. According to results reported by the National Assessment of Educational Progress in 2020, only 15 percent of eighth-graders scored “proficient” or better in U.S. history. Quinn said he hopes his story can help reverse that outcome by instilling a love of learning about the past in children while they are still young. That way, he said, they can grow up wanting to learn about what came before them, instead of feeling as if history is something they are forced to study.

There is a lot readers can look into after finishing “The Sea Pony.” For instance, one section of the book was based on the real horses that assisted

Welsh coal miners during the early 20th century. Another part was inspired by the exploits of Sonora Webster Carver, one of the first female horse divers.

But an interest in history is not the only takeaway offered by “The Sea Pony.”

Quinn wants his readers to realize the world around them is a one giant place to explore and learn — just as the ponies in his story did.

“Every experience is an opportunity to learn,” Quinn said. “The ponies’ interactions with the ‘land people’ led to positive and negative experiences, but they always got some knowledge out of them.

What they learned over the years enabled them to create a safe and happy community. And readers can also benefit from their experiences, if they open their minds.”

Writing was a new experience for Quinn — “The Sea Pony” is his first book — and he said he greatly enjoyed the process. He said he also loved creating the illustrations for the story, 22 original watercolor pictures. Quinn, an awardwinning painter whose work has been displayed in galleries throughout New York City, is no stranger to making art. But he acknowledged illustrating for a book was a challenge.

“As the story took shape, it inspired the

pictures, so it was interesting to go back and paint the images I only had in my mind while writing,” Quinn said, adding that his work for “The Sea Pony” was a departure from his usual style. “An illustrator I admired all through art school was Jerry Pinkney, but I haven’t painted like him in a long time, so I was excited to go back to that world.”

Quinn said he hopes his illustrations capture his young readers’ imaginations.

He also said he would love it if his work inspires children to pick up a paintbrush and try something new, as he did.

As for Quinn himself, the author-illustrator said he does not know whether he will ever write another book, though he acknowledged there are more tales he could tell involving the characters of “The Sea Pony.” Right now, he said he is just glad he finally told the story of that underwater horse he accidentally painted so long ago.

“It was very satisfying to complete the story,” Quinn said. “The idea had stayed with me all these years and now it’s been brought to fruition.”

Vaccaro named new assistant principal at Hillside Avenue School After an extensive search process, the Cranford Board of Education announced that Nicole Vaccaro is the new assistant principal at Hillside Avenue School.

Vaccaro began her career teaching mathematics at Weldon E. Howitt Middle School in Farmingdale, N.Y. While there, she helped secure grant funding and directed a summer program for at-risk elementary students entering middle school.

She then transitioned to Bronxville Middle School in Bronxville, N.Y., where she taught seventh- and eighth-

grade math and algebra I. Within a year, she was appointed dean of students, a role she had for two years before being appointed chairperson of the middle school mathematics department.

Most recently, Vaccaro taught precalculus at Scotch Plains–Fanwood High School and, for the past two years, has taught mathematics in grades 6-8, as well as all financial literacy classes at Hillside Avenue School in Cranford.

She is also a member of the Cranford District Assess-

ment Committee and the Cranford District Middle School Scheduling Committee.

Vaccaro has a bachelor’s degree in comprehensive science from Villanova University, a master’s degree in mathematics education from the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University — now LIU Post — and a degree in supervision and administration from Hofstra University.

Vaccaro said she is honored and excited to be named the new assistant principal at Hillside Avenue School.

UCC board chairperson receives prestigious leadership award

Union County College has announced that board of trustees Chairperson Victor M. Richel will receive the Association of Community College Trustees 2021 Northeast Regional Award for Trustee Leadership. Richel will formally accept the award in October at the regional awards presentation during the 52nd annual ACCT Leadership Congress in San Diego.

Richel is a community leader, philanthropist and businessperson. Richel was a vice president for Elizabethtown Gas, and it was during his leadership that the company gifted its building in Elizabeth to Union County College. He has been a member of the Union County College board of trustees for almost 40 years and has served as chairperson for almost 30 years. Richel also serves as chairperson of the board of Trinitas Health and Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth.

In 2018, Richel received the New Jersey Hospital Association Hospital and Healthcare System Trustee of the Year award for his service to Trinitas Regional Medical Center. In 2017, Richel was recognized by the YWCA of Union County for advancing education and economic empowerment for girls and women. In 2016, he was honored by the New Jersey Council of County Colleges with the Ronald D. Winthers Community College Trustee Leadership Award, which each year is bestowed upon a single New Jersey community college trustee.

It is a testament to Richel’s leadership and commitment to improving outcomes that Union County College was named one of the top 150 community colleges in 2021 by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program, the nation’s signature recognition of high achievement and performance among America’s community colleges.

Only the top 15 percent of community colleges nationwide are recognized.

Richel was born in Elizabeth and resides in Berkeley Heights with his wife, Andrea. In addition to his many civic and business accolades, he is a father and grandfather.

“We are honored and thrilled by ACCT’s recognition of our devoted board chair, Mr. Richel. He has given many years of dedicated service to our college’s board. We are indebted to him for the invaluable and steadfast leadership he has provided to the college. He loves our students, our community and our college,” said UCC President Margaret M. McMenamin.

The ACCT represents more than 6,500 elected and appointed trustees who govern more than 1,100 community colleges throughout the United States. The ACCT annually recognizes trustees and other community college leaders in each of its five regions for their contributions.

Nancy Lubarsky, of Cranford, recently had her poetry published in a travelogue alongside poetry from other Garden State authors.

While poets and their audiences sheltered in place throughout New Jersey and the rest of the world for more than a year during the COVID-19 pandemic, public poetry readings, local workshops and festivals were canceled.

But a Fanwood editor had a plan to bring contemporary poetry to the shut-ins via Exit 13 Magazine.

“Last year’s issue of EXIT 13 Magazine was mailed free of charge to anyone who sent me a written request for a copy,” said Fanwood’s Tom Plante, editor and publisher of the annual poetry travelogue since 1988.

Union County College welcomes new dean of students Union County College welcomed Takeem L. Dean as the new dean of students. Dean comes to Union after having served as dean of students at Johnson C. Smith University, a historically black university in Charlotte, N.C. Dean is not new to the Garden State. Prior to Johnson C. Smith, he served at two New Jersey colleges: Passaic County Community College and Montclair State University.

In his time as dean of students at Johnson C. Smith University, Dean supervised student leadership and engagement, Greek life, student conduct, intramural sports, counseling services, diversity, equity and inclusion, and educational enhancement services. He was also responsible for residential life and admissions.

As the dean of students at Union, Dean will oversee the CARE Team, a multidisciplinary team that includes the assistant dean of students, the college’s social workers and the coordinator of Disability Services, and assists students in need of personal and/or academic resources.

Dean will serve as the chief disciplinary officer, develop and implement student code of conduct, oversee Title IX compliance for student cases, serve as liaison between students and the campus community, and develop DEI training programs for students.

He is also a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., and, locally, he served as a chapter chaplain, chairperson of service projects and co-chairperson for a Martin Luther King Jr. ceremony and an oratorical contest. Dean earned his doctorate in community college leadership from Wingate University in Wingate, N.C. The Union County Board of County Commissioners has announced that boxlunch meals will be available to seniors beginning in May, through the grab-andgo program. The program is run through the Union County Division on Aging and Disability Resource Connection, in the Department of Human Services.

“This alternative dining option will provide seniors with access to nutritious lunches, while reducing the risk of contracting or spreading the COVID-19 virus,” said County Commissioner Chairperson Alexander Mirabella.

The grab-and-go program is for seniors ages 60 and older who reside in Union County and are not receiving home-delivered meals from Meals on Wheels.

It will be available at 19 senior centers and senior housing sites throughout the county every Tuesday and Thursday, beginning on Tuesday, May 4.

Reservations are required and are available by calling the Division on Aging by 9 a.m. on the previous Thursday for Tuesday pickup and by 9 a.m. the previous Monday for Thursday pickup.

Girl Scouts of Cranford distinguish themselves through service Six Girl Scouts of Cranford have been honored with the Distinguished Girl Scout Service Award for their dedication to the organization. The 2021 Distinguished Girl Scout Service Award recipients are Rachael Durant, Lasairfhiona “Fiona” Iosso, Julia Love, Genevieve Marchesi, Erin Miklencic and Amanda Newport. Each received a $300 scholarship from Girl Scouts of Cranford Service Unit 48, in recognition of their achievement.

The young women were honored for their achievements at an awards ceremony in June at the Cranford United Methodist Church.

The Distinguished Girl Scout Service Award honors Ambassador Girl Scouts who were Girl Scouts for all four years of their high school careers, completed 50 hours of service for the organization during that time and graduated with a minimum 3.0 grade-point average. The scholarship program was created several years ago to encourage leadership through service, while also creating a stronger Girl Scout community.

“By adding their time and talents to our organization, these young women have made our group stronger. Their efforts included assisting adult leaders, mentoring younger Girl Scouts, supporting town-wide programming and even working on behalf of the Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey council. We are so proud that they chose to give back and lead by example,” said Elayna Torsone, the manager of Cranford Service Unit 48. “We can’t wait to see where the future takes them.”

UCC receives $10,000 grant to establish NJCAA men’s volleyball program Union County College recently received a $10,000 grant from the National Junior College Athletic Association and First Point Volleyball Foundation to establish a men’s volleyball team.

“Thank you to the NJCAA Foundation and the First Point Volleyball Foundation for providing the opportunity to expand the sports programs offered at Union,” said UCC President Margaret M. McMenamin. “With the addition of a men’s volleyball team at Union, we are able to engage more students in athletics while they earn a high-quality education.”

The addition of men’s volleyball to Union’s athletic department brings the total number of sports offered to 17.

In May, the NJCAA, in collaboration with First Point Volleyball Foundation, announced a $200,000 grant to support the growth of men’s volleyball within the association. Grants were awarded to 15 member colleges, including UCC, to support the initiative.

Murphy signs sweeping housing eviction prevention bill On Aug. 4, Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation that will provide comprehensive housing eviction prevention and utility assistance for renters who have been financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The legislation, S3691, appropriates an additional $500 million for the COVID-19 Emergency Rental Assistance Program and $250 million for utility assistance, both programs administered by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs. The bill also mandates new eviction and foreclosure moratorium deadlines and special eviction protections for tenants who were directly impacted by the pandemic. This legislation will ensure that New Jersey’s eviction moratorium continues through August for all state residents with household incomes below 120 percent of the area median income and through the end of the year for certain households with incomes below 80 percent AMI. The Aug. 3 announcement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention extending the nationwide moratorium on evictions for 60 days may provide additional protections for certain residents.

The governor also signed legislation A-4463, providing additional protections for individuals who were unable to pay rent during the public health emergency by mandating that court records pertaining to their nonpayment during this period be kept confidential.

“We have heard the continuing calls for help from New Jerseyans who are struggling to pay their rent and utilities.

COVID-19 has put tenants and landlords in a difficult place, and I am pleased to say that more assistance is on the way,” Murphy said. “This bill is going to direct money to the people and programs that need it most. Housing and access to utilities are fundamental to human health and safety, and we want to ensure that as many eligible applicants impacted by the pandemic get the help they need during this challenging time.”

and secure way,” state Senate President Steve Sweeney said. “It’s real eviction prevention because it backs up housing protections with finances so tenants aren’t burdened with debt and landlords aren’t forced into bankruptcy. Housing and utilities are essential needs that should be protected as we continue to work to emerge from the most challenging crisis of our lifetime.”

The eviction prevention bill will gradually phase out the state’s eviction moratorium based on individual renters’ situations while mandating special protections for those who were unable to pay their rent during the period of March 1, 2020, through Aug. 31, 2021, or, for certain tenants, through Dec. 31, 2021.

Murphy also signed Executive Order No. 249, which updates the moratorium on evictions established under Executive Order No. 106 in 2020 to be aligned with these new laws.

The new funds appropriated through S-3691 bring the total funds allocated to the COVID-19 Emergency Rental Assistance Program and Eviction Prevention Program to more than $1.2 billion.

The DCA Division of Housing and Community Resources also announced Aug. 4 that it has reached the milestone of delivering more than $100 million in federal Emergency Rental Assistance Program funds throughout the state, with nearly $131 million in rental relief having been distributed to more than 15,000 households to date.

Eligible seniors can apply for farmers market vouchers by mail The Union County Board of County Commissioners is offering a farmers market voucher program to eligible Union County seniors; the vouchers will be distributed by mail, due to ongoing concerns regarding COVID-19.

In Cranford, Dreyer Farms, 831 Springfield Ave., is participating in this program.

To be eligible, seniors must be 60 years of age and older. To qualify, a single person’s annual income cannot exceed $1,986 per month, and a married couple’s combined income may not exceed $2,686 per month.

“Our local farmers markets are community gathering places, and the voucher program helps eligible seniors participate in a popular social activity, while also adding a healthy variety of fresh produce to their diets, and sup-

porting farmers, too,” said County Commissioner Chairperson Alexander Mirabella.

Each eligible senior can obtain five vouchers worth $6 each for a total of $30 to purchase “Jersey Fresh” fruits, vegetables and herbs at farmers markets that display the black and yellow WIC posters. Eligible seniors can request a voucher application form by calling the Union County Division on Aging at 908-527-4870 or 888-2808226, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Requests can also be submitted after hours and on weekends by leaving a voice message, including name, address and phone contact, or by emailing the information to Kathleen Malkiewicz, nutrition program director, at kmalkiewicz@ucnj.org. Malkiewicz may also be

Seniors who submitted an application last year do not need to reapply and should call Union County Division on Aging at 908-527-4870 or 888-280-8226 to receive this year’s vouchers.

Cranford police deploy unmanned aerial system program Beginning on Friday, July 2, during Cranford’s Independence Day celebration at Nomahegan Park, the Cranford Police Department combined cutting-edge technology and extensive training to deploy equipment that enhances first responders’ ability to respond to major events and emergencies in Cranford.

With the support of the Cranford Township Committee and a partnership with Conrail, the Cranford Police Department began deploying unmanned aerial systems for the purpose of improving public safety and expanding first responders’ situational awareness at critical events, fire scenes, and traffic crash investigations; during missing persons responses; for pedestrian safety issues; and for timely damage assessments after weather events.

In February 2021, the Cranford Police Department worked in conjunction with senior management at Conrail, which operates and manages the freight rail line that extends along the southern portion of the township. Citing concerns about the police department’s accessibility to the tracks during calls for service about trespassers

and high-tension power line issues, the Cranford Police Department and Conrail collaborated to discuss effective strategies to aid in emergency responses in areas that are not immediately reachable, including property abutting the Garden State Parkway, residential neighborhoods, an industrial business district and the Rahway River.

Conrail recognized this gap and saw value in providing Cranford with a tool that could supplement public safety operations.

The UAS has a powerful onboard camera that streams high-definition video back to the operator, who in turn can immediately communicate critical, timely information to emergency personnel in the field. Because of Conrail’s support and the Township Committee’s approval, Cranford’s UAS Unit was established and supplied with the necessary equipment and training to ensure its successful implementation and operation.

The Cranford Police Department designated four officers as UAS pilots; they received wide-ranging training and passed federal testing requirements to safely, effectively and legally operate newly deployed unmanned aer-

ial systems. This training includes receiving a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification issued by the Federal Aviation Administration. Additionally, the Cranford Police Department has secured a certificate of waiver and authorization by the FAA, allowing public safety operations of the UAS program. Capt. Guy Patterson currently serves as the commander of the UAS Team.

“The purpose of the UAS program is to provide our officers and our emergency response partners with the necessary vantage point to assess, monitor, inspect and assist in critical incidents or special events in our community,” Chief Ryan J. Greco said. The Cranford Police Department’s UAS program and all UAS operators shall be responsible for annual training, certification, deployment documentation and strict management oversight to ensure proper deployment practices.

In addition to benefiting the Cranford Police Department, the opportunity to deploy unmanned aerial systems will serve the ever-changing, wide-ranging utility needs of other municipal departments in Cranford that require access to such technology.

Union County Local Arts Grant Program now accepting applications The Union County Board of County Commissioners has announced that applications to the 2022 Local Arts Grant Program are now being accepted by the Union County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs.

“In previous years, LAP grants have supported many enriching programs and projects for Union County residents, and we look forward to seeing the artistic experiences that will be offered in 2022,” said Board of County Commissioners Chairperson Alexander Mirabella. “The Board of Commissioners is proud to support our arts institutions through this program.”

Qualifying nonprofit organizations are encouraged to apply, as well as libraries, schools and units of local government.

Grants will be awarded to organizations demonstrating a high degree of professionalism in arts programming for activi-

ties taking place in 2022. Applicant organizations must be based in Union County and arts programming must take place in Union County to qualify for funding. Full eligibility requirements, application components and other pertinent details are outlined in the complete LAP Guidelines. All application materials must be submitted by Tuesday, Sept. 14.

Cranford Police Athletic League awards five scholarships The Cranford Police Athletic League, a not-for-profit youth sports organization serving the township since 1981, awarded five scholarships to graduating Cranford High School seniors this year during a ceremony at Memorial Field. Presenting the scholarships was veteran board of directors member Kim Capece.

The Glenn A. Owens Scholarship was established in honor of the late PAL board of director member by that name, who dedicated his life to service and community.

A police officer, volunteer coach and military veteran, Owens played baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1952 to 1956 and coached baseball in the Cranford baseball leagues for more than 15 years. In 2002, Glenn was inducted into the Cranford Sports Hall of Fame. For the Glenn A. Owens Scholarship, applicants were required to

demonstrate their similarities to Owens, who was affectionately known as a “doer.” For 2021, Matthew Coates and Meghan Pitts were selected as recipients.

With an outpouring of community support and grassroots donations, the Cranford PAL was able to establish a second scholarship in memory of PAL participant Will DeGregorio, who died in 2020, after a courageous battle with pediatric cancer. DeGregorio loved anything and everything related to sports and was a fierce competitor who demonstrated exceptional perseverance. After DeGregorio’s passing, community groups such as the Cranford Knights of Columbus, Cranford Jaycees and fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon TCNJ came together to have fundraisers — including the Knights’ Corned Beef Dinner and the Jaycees’ Track Friday — to help fund a

scholarship in his honor. Recently, the Brookside School PTA contributed to this fund. DeGregorio’s family determined that students who have persevered through adversity would be eligible for this award. For the inaugural Will DeGregorio Memorial Scholarship, Dominic Fallone, Dane Hagstrom and Kate Wilson were selected as award recipients.

State awards nearly $30 million in federal funding to NJ colleges Gov. Phil Murphy and Secretary of Higher Education Brian Bridges announced in July the awardees of nearly $30 million in federal funding that will be distributed to New Jersey institutions of higher education to support the core priorities of the State Plan for Higher Education and address the impacts of COVID19 on postsecondary students.

Approximately $28.5 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Education, through the second round of Governor’s Emergency Education Relief funding, will be awarded to 35 public and public-mission private institutions that receive state operating aid. These institutions will implement vetted best practices that increase college completion, address barriers to student success and develop sustainable systemic reforms. In addition, more than $1 million will be awarded to 11 public institutions to combat food insecurity among students.

“Our institutions of higher education have provided a high quality of education to our students throughout the pandemic, despite challenging circumstances,” Murphy said. “Supporting our institutions will continue to be a priority as they work to provide

an equitable educational experience for students, prepare them for the jobs of the future and meet challenges ahead.”

“Through this critical federal funding, New Jersey is prioritizing students’ needs and ensuring our workforce will be ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s post-pandemic economy,” Bridges said. “We appreciate that institutions are committing to this challenge and look forward to learning from the innovative best practices implemented, as we strive to meet the state’s goal of 65 percent of residents earning a high-quality credential by 2025.”

“Worrying about where your next meal will come from should not be part of the daily challenges that academics and extracurricular activities present to students,” said Assemblywoman Mila Jasey, who represents New Jersey’s 27th Legislative District. “This funding will ease the worries of students and their families, and work towards mitigating food insecurity on college campuses.”

A total of 35 institutions will be receiving $28.5 million in funding to support the launch of the Opportunity Meets Innovation Challenge, a competitive

grant program to implement best practices and develop sustainable systemwide reforms as the state builds long-term resilience.

The following institutions in Union County will receive OMIC grant monies: Kean University will receive $832,566, and Union County College will receive $998,800.

More than $1 million in funding is supporting the goals of the Hunger-Free Campus Act, signed by Murphy in 2019 to establish a grant program to address food insecurity among students enrolled at public institutions. Funding is available only to public institutions that received “Hunger-Free Campus” designation for meeting all requirements during the 2020-21 academic year.

Kean University will receive $56,200 from the HFCA grant monies.

Additional institutions may have obtained the “Hunger-Free Campus” designation for academic year 2020-21 but not have received funding.

Acting AG announces settlement with EPA to protect NJ from air pollution Acting Attorney General Andrew J. Bruck announced July 29 that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has agreed to take action on air pollution reduction plans submitted by certain “upwind” states as part of a settlement reached between EPA and “downwind” states New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Delaware and Massachusetts, as well as New York City. The action resolves a lawsuit brought by the states and city earlier this year against the Trump administration’s EPA over its alleged failure to fulfill its responsibility under the federal Clean Air Act to ensure the control of upwind sources of smogforming pollution.

The lawsuit alleged that the unchecked pollution from upwind states creates an ongoing threat to the health of residents in New Jersey and the other downwind states, and makes it more difficult for the downwind states to meet federal air quality standards.

Under the July 29 settlement, the

EPA must approve or disapprove emission control plans, known as State Implementation Plans, submitted by the upwind states of Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Texas and West Virginia by April 30, 2022. The EPA must finalize federal replacement plans for any SIPs it disapproves by Dec. 15, 2022.

Following a notice and comment period required by the Clean Air Act, the proposed consent decree will be sent to the U.S. District Court for approval.

“This is an important win for New Jersey, its residents and its environment,” Bruck said. “For too long, polluted air has been blowing downwind into New Jersey from other states, and today’s settlement requires the federal government to finally take action to address the harm. This is yet another victory in our fight for environmental justice in the Garden State.”

The Clean Air Act requires every state to evaluate whether its emissions of regulated pollutants “substantially con-

tribute” to any other state’s inability to attain federal air quality standards. If so, the offending state must submit a SIP describing its efforts to reduce the effect of its emissions on other states.

Under the Clean Air Act, the EPA has 12 months to approve or disapprove SIPs and must adopt a federal plan for any state whose SIP it disapproves.

“Improving air quality for all of our residents is a priority of Gov. Murphy’s administration,” N.J. Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette said.

“While New Jersey has consistently taken strong actions over the years to address the pollutants that cause ozone, the same cannot be said for many of the upwind states that generate these pollutants that are carried by prevailing winds to our state. Addressing ozone pollutants requires a strong federal hand.”

While the ozone layer around the planet protects Earth from harmful

ultraviolet rays from the sun, ozone itself — a colorless unstable toxic gas with a pungent odor and powerful oxidizing properties — can be harmful to health. When inhaled, ozone can damage the lungs; relatively low amounts of ozone can cause chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath and throat irritation.

Ozone and smog — caused largely by nitrogen oxide emissions — can damage the lining of the lungs and lung tissue and aggravate asthma. Children and individuals with respiratory conditions are particularly susceptible. People of color and those living below the federal poverty standard disproportionately bear the consequences of ozone pollution. Even though New Jersey has some of the strictest limits on nitrogen oxide in the United States, ground-level ozone in certain parts of the state exceeds federal standards, largely due to emissions from coalburning power plants and other pollution sources in upwind states.

Cougars football team gets ready for upcoming season

Those are the weights of most of Cranford’s offensive linemen. The overall range is from 200 to 285.

Three of the five starters are back.

Attempting to get by their fronts will not be so easy.

“We have a lot of size and experience up-front, which allows us to be balanced and versatile,” said head coach Erik Rosenmeier, now in his 17th season at the helm of the Cougars.

The starting five include senior Matt Fries, 6-foot-5, 275 pounds, at left tackle; senior Kevin Shriner, 6-foot-2, 285 pounds, at left guard; junior Ryan Heesters, 5-foot-11, 220 pounds, at center; senior Geoff Gretta, 6-foot-6, 280 pounds, at right guard; and junior Kyle Fay, 6-foot-6, 280 pounds, at right tackle.

In addition are junior Dylan McDonald, 6-foot-1, 220 pounds, at guard; senior Connor Ryan, 5-foot-11, 200 pounds, at tackle; and senior Sam Derasmo, 6-foot-2, 260 pounds, at guard.

“Fries and Shriner are our two best players and are true leaders,” Rosenmeier said.

Fries, Shriner and Lucas Ruby started as sophomores two years ago. Ruby, at 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, moved over to the H-back position and will be used as a running back this season. He previously played at tackle and center.

“Lucas has the ability to run with the ball, so we moved him there,” Rosenmeier said.

In June, Fries gave a verbal commitment to play in the Big Ten at Illinois. Older brother Will, a 2016 Cranford graduate who excelled at Penn State, is now in the process of making it in the NFL as a rookie with the Indianapolis Colts, which drafted him in the seventh round.

Offensive line, like his brother Will before him, is where Fries will seek to make an impact at Illinois. Other schools that showed major interest in him include Indiana, Syracuse, Wake Forest, Arizona and Arizona State.

Shriner, Cranford’s standout heavyweight wrestler, does not have the height that Fries does but is just as intimidating.

“Kevin is as dominant of an inside player that we’ve had here, period,” Rosenmeier said. “He’s right there with (standout linemen from the past) Will Fries, Kevin Doran and Patrick Blowe; he’s at or near the top of that list. He has excellent balance and uses his hands well.”

Gretta is the third returning starter on the line. Rosenmeier said he gained 60 pounds between his sophomore and junior years.

“He’s a little raw but has a lot of athletic ability,” Rosenmeier said.

Keeping the uniform of returning senior quarterback Jack Van Dam as clean as possible is one of the many tasks these high school behemoths have on their list of things to perform.

“Playing these guys as early as we did two years ago, hopefully we will now benefit,” Rosenmeier said.

What Rosenmeier is most proud of is that he has so many multisport athletes out for football. Baseball players include Jack Conley, Jake Carter, Lucca Limeira and Will Gallagher.

“We get tremendous support from all the other coaches,” Rosenmeier said. “That’s how we roll. We all make time and encourage our athletes to play other sports.

“We feel it gives us an edge. We get kids that are used to competing.”

Cranford has produced 11 consecutive winning seasons since 2010. In that mix are the program’s two state championships in the playoff era — North 2, Group 3, crowns captured in 2011 and 2015.

“We have high expectations every year,” Rosenmeier said. “We expect to win.”

That philosophy was not lessened last year, despite the challenges of an unprecedented pandemic, when keeping COVID-19 safe was more important than making a tackle or scoring a touchdown.

“The circumstances were terrible, but I’m proud of what we were able to do and enjoyed it,” Rosenmeier said.

Cranford was able to play eight games, winning six of them and handing 7-1 North Brunswick its only loss, defeating the Middlesex County school 43-19 at home two weeks before Thanksgiving.

“We got over the disappointment of no playoffs and hung our hats on every game, making each one more important,” Rosenmeier said. “Without any playoffs, it was like a throwback season.”

“The level of intensity was just as high for each game because there was a chance that it could have been our last,” Rosenmeier said. “That’s the legacy last year’s team left.”

Cranford is back in Group 3 for the first time since 2017 and is situated in North, Group 3, for the 2021 season. Should the Cougars qualify for the playoffs it will most likely be in North 2, Group 3 — a section they won in 2011 and 2015.
