Members of the Nutley American Legion Post 70 family celebrated the 107th birthday of the American Legion on March 15 with a breakfast where they opened the doors to the Post home on Franklin Avenue and invited the community in for a morning of good food and good company. With 75 people attending, the breakfast was a celebration of an American Legion Post which has a century-old connection to Nutley, stretching back to the organization's founding in 1919 – the same year Post 70 received its charter. "One hundred and seven years ago, a group of doughboys in Paris were asked to determine the scope of the work and carry forth the objects of this association,” said American Legion National Commander Dan K. Wiley in his published 107th American Legion Birthday message. “That association was The American Legion, and they surpassed all expectations - just as legionnaires do today and will continue to do for future generations." Griddling up pancakes, French toast, and bacon on the sidewalk outside of the Post, much of the food was cooked ahead of time by legionnaires, auxiliary members, and sons. But it seemed that, aside from piping hot coffee and assortments of donated doughnuts and coffee cake, most of the attendees enjoyed taking time to chat with one another – in many cases, with people they had never met before. Members from around the state showed up in support – from Squadron 174 in Wayne, Post 299 in Belleville, Unit 105 in Belleville, and even members of The American Legion Riders who rode their bikes from Post 286 in West Milford. All proof that a member is a member, regardless of what home post, squadron, unit, or chapter they come from – the truest example of American Legion Family.
