By Amanda Valentovic Staff Writer Ron Negra was cleaning out a closet at his mother’s house in Lacey Township in 2019 when he found a sealed box filled with decades-old letters from people located all around the country. They were responses to letters his mother, Agnes Negra, had written during World War II to families of soldiers, telling them that their soldier relative was still alive. Living in Nutley at the time, Agnes Negra listened via short-wave radio to Radio Berlin, a German broadcast station, on which the Red Cross would broadcast five names of prisoners of war nightly, along with their family’s contact information. Agnes Negra took it upon herself to write to each of those families with the good news. To celebrate his mother’s 100th birthday in 2019, Ron Negra, a Nutley native, decided to compile a portion of the 200 letters his mother had received in response to the more than 300 she sent and turn it into a book, which he titled “Waves of Hope.” He interviewed his mother throughout the year, asking her about her life during that time. She told him that she had been listening for specific names; her husband and brother-in-law were both overseas serving in the military while she was home with Ron Negra’s older sister, who was an infant at the time. “I interviewed her every two days and didn’t tell her what I was doing,” Ron Negra said at a March 16 event hosted by the Nutley Historical Society at the Nutley Museum. “I asked about her life and what Nutley was like at that time. Then I said, ‘Let me put all of this together and have a book printed.’” Ron Negra gave the book to his mother at her 100th birthday party, where he discovered that his mother had never told anyone what she had done during the war. She was one of 11 siblings and part of a

Never intending to print more than one copy of the book, Negra eventually met a publisher and decided to circulate the story. The first half of the book contains the stories that came from his interviews with his mother, and the second half features about 75 of the 200 response letters. While writing the book, Ron Negra researched the families his mother wrote to in an attempt to determine whether their soldiers ever made it home. “She had addresses from the people who wrote back to her but didn’t want to open wounds,” Ron Negra said, saying his mother didn’t want to take the chance that a soldier never made it home and remind their family. “So she never knew. I’ve done some research, and about half

of them made it back. I’m still investigating the other 50 percent.” Ron Negra’s uncle, Sgt. John Negra, was taken as a prisoner of war in Yugoslavia and did eventually make it back to Nutley. So did Ron Negra’s father, who fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was rescued by Belgian soldiers. His father did know about the letters his wife wrote, but he never read the responses. Neither of his parents ever discussed the war after it was over. But after the book was published, it connected with a large audience. People wrote to the Negras from all over: small towns and large cities, familiar places and places they had no idea existed. Readers shared their own family stories from the World War II time period, some similar to Agnes Negra’s radio listening story. For his mother’s 101st birthday in 2020, Ron Negra put photos of readers with the book into an album. See WAVES, Page 3

SECC honors businesses, individuals, organizations By Yael Katzwer Editor The Suburban Essex Chamber of Commerce recognized several local businesses, organizations and individuals at its awards banquet on March 4 at the Chandelier in Belleville. The SECC presented the Business of the Year Award to Dr. Sean Flynn of Step by Step Pediatrics in Bloomfield, the Excellence in Education Award to Bloomfield College President Marcheta P. Evans, the Business Achievement Award to Thomas and Dean Maroulakos of Cowan’s Public in Nutley, the Community Service Award to the Bloomfield Animal Shelter, and the Support & Achievement Award to Patrick Colligan of 1st Cerebral Palsy of New Jersey in Belleville. The Suburban Essex Chamber of Commerce comprises Bloomfield, Belleville and Glen Ridge. The volunteer organization is dedicated to supporting the civic, industrial, professional and social welfare of its members. Cowan’s Public, which is named for John Cowan, the long-time proprietor of the Nutley Pub, has a long history in Nutley. Built in the early 1920s, the building on Centre Street opened as a bar in 1934, immediately following the end of Prohibition, a period from 1920 to 1933 when, except for certain instances, alcohol was illegal in the United States. The building has operated as a pub ever since, through several iterations: Lou’s, John’s Tavern and, of course, the Nutley Pub. Paying homage to this history, the space has been transformed to honor its past, while being adapted for the modern day. “Cowan’s Public, formed in 2015, was named after our dear friend and former owner of the Nutley Pub, John Cowan,” Thomas Marouklos told the newspaper on March 24. “The space had been a bar and restaurant since the end of Prohibition, so we wanted to honor that history by turning it into an art deco speakeasy with a

al dining, craft beer and a revival of classic cocktails,” SECC Executive Administrator Donna M. Pietroiacovo told the newspaper on March 21. “This success for business owners Thomas and Dean Maroulakos, brothers, has paved a new way for their second project, the Barrow House in Clifton. From there, Skopos Hospitality Group was formed. And in 2019, the group saw continued growth with the opening of new projects: the Vanguard in Harrison, and the Franklin Social, (which includes a) tavern and garden, and the Junto: Attic Bar, in Jersey City. “Even during the pandemic, nothing stopped Tom and Dean, and, in July 2021, Gus’ Last Word in Wood Ridge was opened, and coming in the spring is the Parkside Social in Verona,” Pietroiacovo continued. “The continued growth within the past seven years for these two young men far exceeds and enhances the growth and prosperity of the restaurant community at large.” Even with their phenomenal growth, the Marouklos brothers have a special place in their hearts for Cowan’s Photo Courtesy of Anthony DiMatteo Photography Public and were deeply honored to receive the SECC’s Business Achievement Award. Above, Judge Alan Genitempo, right, is sworn in by New Jersey Superior Court Judge Vicki A. Citrino. At right, Genitempo, left, is congratulated by Mayor Mauro G. Tucci.

Genitempo appointed Nutley Municipal Court judge Alan Genitempo, the township of Nutley’s longtime municipal attorney, has been appointed as the township’s municipal court judge. Genitempo, who has represented Nutley in a number of roles since 2002, was appointed by the Nutley Board of Commissioners in February. “I am incredibly proud and humbled to be appointed to this position,” Genitempo said from his law office at Piro, Zinna, Cifelli, Paris & Genitempo LLC, located in Nutley. “To be given the opportunity to do

something I have always wanted to do — well, it is hard to put into words.” For Genitempo, who attended Washington Elementary School, Franklin Junior High and Nutley High School, becoming the township’s municipal judge is another step in a lifetime spent serving his hometown. “When it comes to Nutley, I take everything to heart,” he said. “It’s not about the money or the work. It’s about making sure the town continues to be the great place that it is. I have always taken that approach

in all my positions for the township.” Looking forward to his new role, Genitempo feels his experience and his love for Nutley have prepared him well. “My goal is to enforce our laws and hold people who commit crimes and violations in our township accountable, which I think will keep Nutley safe and strong, while always being compassionate and respectful to all who come before me.” On Wednesday, Feb. 23, as a packed courthouse full of friends and relatives

looked on, Genitempo was lauded by Mayor Mauro G. Tucci and Public Safety Commissioner Alphonse Petracco before officially being sworn in by New Jersey Superior Court Judge Vicki A Citrino, the daughter of former Nutley Municipal Court Judge Robert J. Citrino Jr. “I promise to bring dignity, fairness and compassion to the bench,” Genitempo said after thanking those who gathered for their support, “and I promise to make you proud.”

‘Waves of Hope’ rippled across country during war (Continued from Page 1) The Daughters of the American Revolution selected “Waves of Hope” to be included in the organization’s national library and named Agnes Negra a “Woman in American History.” Agnes Negra was also honored as a Hometown Hero at the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. The recognition is overdue by about 75 years. Ron Negra said there are probably thousands of women who heroically helped the war effort that no one knows about, because at the time women rarely got credit for the work they did. Even his mother signed the letters she wrote with her husband’s name. “She signed my father’s name because it

had credibility,” Ron Negra said. “When I asked her why, she said, ‘I wanted that letter to have meaning, and if signing his name gave it meaning, then that’s the way it was.’” Ron Negra is still researching some of the families who wrote back to his mother in an attempt to find out if the soldiers came home. The project will go on for as long as he and his family enjoy it. “It became emotional for us, and it’s been fun,” Ron Negra said. “We’re going to keep doing it as long as it’s fun.” “Waves of Hope” can be purchased at www.ronaldedwardnegra.com. Ron Negra will be at the Nutley Public Library to discuss the book and sign copies on June 4 at 2 p.m.

Belleville recognized for healthy initiatives by MWC Belleville has been recognized for its commitment to creating a healthier place to live through initiatives that address food insecurity, support COVID-19 testing and vaccinations, and promote physical and mental health. The township has received “Healthy Town To Watch” status in the annual statewide Mayors Wellness Campaign. The campaign is a program of the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute in partnership with the New Jersey State League of Municipalities. Belleville was one of seven towns across the state to be designated a 2021 Healthy Town To Watch. Eight towns received the top designation, “Healthy Town Winners,” and 17 received the third designation, “Healthy Towns Up-andComing.” “Belleville is proud to have earned this designation,” Mayor Michael Melham said in a press release. “It is an especially impressive achievement when you consider how the COVID-19 pandemic has so greatly interrupted our lives. We have remained dedicated to finding ways to promote healthy lifestyles in our great township and creating a healthier and better Belleville in 2022.” Belleville proved in 2021 that it takes a village to create a healthy town. Through a partnership with the school district, Belleville addressed food insecurity that was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pan-

get up and moving through initiatives such as free yoga classes at the Senior Center. Belleville also enlisted the help of community partners to promote health. For instance, Clara Maass Medical Center, a member of the RWJBarnabas Health system, was a leader in organizing COVID-19 vaccination and booster shot efforts. Also, Signature Fitness helped sponsor a brisk stroll down Washington Avenue for dozens of Belleville municipal employees in honor of National Walking Day and subsequent yoga sessions — an initiative spearheaded by Belleville Councilman Vinny Cozzarelli. Families were encouraged to seek out healthier lifestyles through activities such as street yoga under the cherry blossoms and a community bike ride organized by the Belleville Police Department. One of the most eagerly awaited health initiatives was the creation of the first township community garden. Created by the township’s Green Team, the garden not only aligns with Sustainable Jersey’s mission, but also produces healthy fruits and vegetables for residents. “The community garden and the townPhoto Courtesy of Belleville Township ship’s first Community Green Fair were Belleville families were encouraged to seek out healthier lifestyles big hits in 2021,” Green Team member through activities such as street yoga under the cherry blossoms. Nutley community embodies charitable giving The Russian invasion into Ukraine has brought about devastating consequences for the country and its civilians. As the conflict continues to escalate, the Nutley Board of Commissioners is encouraging residents to assist the Ukrainian people by supporting charities and relief efforts, and donating everyday essentials. “We support Ukraine and those of Ukrainian descent that live among us and the surrounding communities. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the innocent people affected, and we pray for a peaceful resolution,” Mayor Mauro G. Tucci said on March 7. The collection center set up at the township’s Department of Parks and Recreation was filled with essential items to help the Ukrainian people in just a three-day timespan. The collection was spearheaded by the Ukrainian Orthodox Holy Ascension Cathedral in Clifton; the church has requested that future donations be money rather than items, as church volunteers already have a lot of donations to sort through. “We are incredibly proud of the efforts our community has made to support the people of the Ukraine,” Tucci said on March 10. “We have been receiving donations throughout the week and the room is filling up with supplies. The compassion and empathy our community shows for those in need never surprises me. It should make everyone in our township proud.”

Just three days after the Nutley Board of Commissioners urged residents to donate items to help the Ukrainian people, the collection site at the Department of Parks and Recreation shows how giving the Nutley community is.

NJ awards funding to reduce waste, promote recycling The Murphy administration is awarding nearly $16.2 million in grants to communities across the state to help them enhance waste reduction and recycling programs, a slight increase over the previous year’s total, Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette announced Feb. 24. Belleville will receive $46,277.76 and Nutley will receive $38,927.45. The annual awards are based on recycling performance from 2019, the most recent year for which data is available. Municipalities must use their funds for various recycling initiatives. These may

include sponsoring household hazardous waste collection events, providing recycling receptacles in public places or maintaining leaf composting operations. “Our state recycling grants support local waste reduction initiatives, helping to reduce local property tax burdens for New Jersey residents while improving the cleanliness of our communities,” LaTourette said. “This vital state support for our local governments helps to strengthen municipal commitment to recycling and improves the quality of life for countless New Jerseyans.” The grants are awarded through the

state’s Recycling Enhancement Act and are funded through a $3-per-ton surcharge on trash disposed statewide at solid waste facilities. The DEP returns that money to municipalities based upon how much recycling each community reports accomplishing during the calendar year. For calendar year 2019, New Jersey generated 21.8 million tons of solid waste. Municipalities, and in limited instances counties, reported 12.1 million tons as recycled and 9.6 million tons of solid waste disposed of, for an overall recycling rate of 56 percent. This represents a slight

NO RABIES HERE — Belleville Township hosted a free rabies vaccination event for pets on March 19 at fire headquarters. In addition to providing rabies vaccines, the township also used the opportunity to educate residents about the town’s first dog park, located on Division Avenue near the high school parking lot entrance. And good news: A second dog park is on its way!

decrease from the 2018 rate of 59 percent. Solid waste includes municipal waste plus construction debris and other types of nonmunicipal waste. Likewise, New Jersey generated 9.7 million tons of municipal solid waste. Municipalities, and in limited instances counties, reported recycling 3.6 million tons of municipal solid waste and disposing of 6 million tons of it. Higher disposal versus recycling of municipal solid waste in 2019 compared with 2018 caused the municipal solid waste recycling rate to dip 1 percentage point to 38 percent. New Jersey’s municipal solid waste recycling rate exceeds the national recycling rate average of 32 percent but is below the state’s municipal solid waste recycling goal of 50 percent. “The annual distribution of recycling tonnage grants helps fund recycling initiatives that will educate the public about the importance of keeping New Jersey’s environment clean,” said Mark Pedersen, assistant commissioner for site remediation and waste management. “New Jersey remains a national leader in recycling, and these awards demonstrate our commitment to continually enhancing our recycling program.” Additionally, the payout amount for food waste was increased this year to encourage food waste recycling in conjunction with the Food Waste Recycling and Food Waste-to-Energy Production Law.

RELIGION Blessing of the palms in Good Friday cross walk The Nutley Clergy Fellowship invites front of Town Hall

Protect your family.

Several Nutley congregations will assemble with palms from their churches on the front lawn of Town Hall, at the corner of Chestnut Street and Vincent Place, on Palm Sunday, April 10, at 9:15 a.m. for a brief service of the blessing of the palms. Masks and social distancing will be optional. The palm branch for Christians is a reminder of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem when the crowds waved palm branches of victory. The event will conclude by 9:30 a.m. so participants can worship with their individual congregations. All are welcome.

Eisai opens new U.S. headquarters on ON3 campus Eisai Inc. announced on March 14 that the company has relocated its U.S. headquarters to the ON3 campus in Nutley. According to a press release from Eisai Inc., this move offers employees a dynamic, technologically advanced work environment that further enables Eisai’s commitment to innovation and the pursuit of its human health care mission to deliver life-changing therapies and health-related solutions to help people live healthier and more fulfilling lives. “We recently met with the leadership of Eisai, and we were extremely impressed,” Nutley Mayor Mauro G. Tucci

said in the release. “Eisai is a global pharmaceutical company, committed to human health care, who values the communities where it works. We welcome Eisai to Nutley and look forward to working with them to enhance our township. We thank them for their investment in our community and the surrounding area.” Eisai’s U.S. headquarters will bring approximately 800 jobs to the Nutley/Clifton area; at full capacity, the new facility will accommodate 1,300 employees. The company’s U.S. presence also includes three early-stage discovery research centers, as well as commercial, clinical develop-

ment and global demand organizations. Eisai’s move to the ON3 campus will help the company continue its work to address unmet patient and caregiver needs and apply its scientific expertise and technology to make a meaningful treatment impact in the fields of oncology and neurology, according to the release. The new facility is designed to nurture the company’s new hybrid flexible working model, which allows for deep collaboration and interaction among colleagues while encouraging them to embrace new ways of working. “Eisai’s decision to relocate to the ON3

campus is a demonstration of our ongoing commitment to New Jersey and to be part of this diverse life sciences hub,” Eisai Inc. and Americas Region President Tatsuyuki Yasuno said in the release. “With a 400seat auditorium and an innovation center at our new U.S. headquarters, we are establishing dedicated space and resources to educate and motivate our employees, as well as a forum to hear from patients, advocacy partners and the community. Through this collaboration, we can make a positive impact on people and society and fulfill our human health care mission.”

Real estate firm secures $6.37M construction loan for Park11 Tulfra Real Estate, in conjunction with the Hampshire Companies, announced recently that it secured a $6.37 million loan to fund the construction of three additional retail pads at Park11 in Belleville. First Bank of Hamilton’s Michael Cook, senior vice president/investment real estate manager, handled the transaction. Jon Mikula and Michael Klein of JLL in Morristown represented Tulfra. Situated at the corner of Franklin Avenue and Mill Street, Park11 is a 20-acre mixed-use development adjacent to the Clara Maass Medical Center. “This funding fuels the next stage of growth for Park11, in line with our mission to bring value back to underperforming properties across New Jersey,” Tulfra President and CEO Sonny Jumani said in a press release. “The location of Park11 is ideal for Starbucks, which is among the most popular quick-service restaurants in the world,” Jumani said. “Also, the brand personifies the type of world-class tenants that Park11 is attracting.” Starbucks joins several retailers that have signed long-term leases at Park11. Wawa signed a ground lease for 2 acres on the property in late 2018, and the convenience store and gas station opened in 2020. Extra Space Storage signed a long-term ground lease for a 110,000square-foot, four-story, 807-unit property; the storage facility is now open. “For decades, we have worked closely with the Hampshire Companies to develop and market retail, industrial and residential sites throughout New Jersey,” Jumani said. “We are very proud of the continued growth and success of Park11.”

Nutley youth wrestling team wins league title Raiders also capture end-of-season tourney

Not since 2008 has the Nutley youth wrestling team been able to capture the Suburban Junior Wrestling League title. After a year away from the sport due to the pandemic, the young Raiders were able to dominate their league and win all 10 dual meets. They then proceeded to win their end-of-the-season tournament on Feb. 20 by over 60 points. Thus, this year the squad will put a banner up in Nutley Parks and Recreation. The team had four individual champions on Feb. 20 in Frankie Wesner (65 pounds), Chris Cifelli (85), Jacob Harlow (119) and Sean Vilchez (heavyweight). Additionally, the team finished the season at the New Jersey Kids Scholastic State Championships, in Trenton, March 12-13. AJ Berardesco placed second, Michael Perna placed third, Rocco Graffeo placed fourth and Michael Berardesco placed sixth. Chrisitian Crespo, Frankie Wesner, Beau Siljanoski, Evan Blanchard, AJ Maiden, Aidan Rotbaum, Sean Vilchez and Nolan Brewer finished in the top 16 of their weight classes. Chris Cifelli and Sean Torres finished in the top 32 of their weight classes.

Nutley HS adds girls flag football program this spring By Joe Ragozzino Sports Editor The Nutley High School football program has been around for more than 100 years. This spring, NHS will debut its girls flag football program. The head coach is Rob Porrino and the assistant coach is Sammy Coppola. Both are assistant coaches for the Raiders football assistant coaches in the fall. This is the second year for girls flag football by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association. Last spring saw eight schools having flag football teams, including Irvington and East Orange Campus. “Our athletic director, Mr. (Joe) Piro, was contacted by the New York Jets with the idea of creating a flag football team and he jumped on the idea,” Porrino said. “From the initial meeting, there was so much interest and enthusiasm from the girls. “We started our practices the first week of March and have been doing early morning practices at 6 a.m.” There was a big turnout, as 25 girls signed up to join the team. Nutley has seven games this spring, five at home at the Park Oval. Interestingly, the home games will be under the lights. The Oval will have permanent lights this spring. Each game will have two, 20-minute halves, in a 7-on7 format. The girls are looking forward to the season. “The enthusiasm and excitement from the girls have been amazing and they are really looking forward to the start of the season,” Porrino said. “I am most excited about seeing how the girls’ interest in the game grows and how they compete on the field.

“I know we have a great group of girls,” Porrino continued. “I am also excited to see what kind of fan support we could have especially for Friday night games in the Oval. The Oval is already an incredible environment, but factor in the intrigue of this new league and team and I think it will just be incredible.” Seniors Mackenzie Albert and Stephanie Luberto are looking forward to playing girls flag football. “I’m very excited,” Albert said. “It’s a new sport I’m learning. For me, it’s a new experience since I didn’t know the sport well. So as everyone is learning, I am learning too.” “I definitely watch football with my dad and my brother, a lot,” Luberto said. “So I kind of already have an idea (of the sport), but it’s a brand new sport to learn in my senior year, which is different. It’s different for all of us, but it’s something that we can learn together and it’s definitely a lot of fun.” Albert and Luberto were teammates on the NHS girls basketball team. Though football is traditionally a male sport, it can also be a sport that can be played by both genders, they both said. Though they will only play for one season, Albert and Luberto feel girls flag football will become more popular and grow. The team will begin the season on Thursday, April 14, at the Park Oval, against Morristown, at 7 p.m. Here are the other games at the Park Oval. All home games are at 6:30 p.m. • April 22: vs. East Orange Campus. • April 29: vs. Union City. • May 6: vs. Dickinson. • May 20: vs. Weequahic. Here are other road games. • May 12: at Irvington, 6 p.m. • May 25: at Shabazz, 4 p.m.

NHS boys volleyball program makes its debut By Joe Ragozzino Sports Editor In Essex County, there are quite a few high school boys volleyball programs in the spring. Now you can add Nutley High School to that list. After receiving strong interest from several students, the NHS athletic department showed great support by adding a boys volleyball program.

The turnout has been impressive. “We were fortunate enough to have over 40 students try out for the team,” head coach Kevin Reilly said. “After a week of tryouts, we now have 22 student-athletes in the program.” Reilly is happy to be leading the new program. “I’m incredibly excited!” Reilly said. “My assistant coach, Amy Gewecke, and I are both assistant coachSee BOYS, Page 31

March Madness! Edert leads Cinderella run Nutley hoopster sparks No. 15 seed Saint Peter’s University to upset victories in NCAA Tourney

By Joe Ragozzino Sports Editor The Saint Peter’s University men’s basketball team captivated the nation when it stunned second-seeded Kentucky in the East Regional first round of the NCAA Division 1 Tournament this month. The Jersey City school was just the 10th No. 15 seed in the history of the tournament to knock off a No. 2 seed. The Peacocks’ magical ride continued with a victory over No. 7 seed Murray State University as the team advanced to the Sweet 16. Helping to make all that happen was 6-foot-2 junior guard Doug Edert. The Nutley native scored 20 points in 25 minutes of play off the bench in the 85-79 overtime win over Kentucky on St. Patrick’s Day, going five for seven from the field, including two for two from 3-point range. He also made all eight of his free-throw attempts. In the 70-60 win over Murray State, Edert scored 13 points on four-of-six shooting, including one of two on 3-pointers and four of six from the free-throw line. Saint Peter’s, which improved to a 21-11 record with its ninth win in a row, was just the third No. 15 seed ever to reach the Sweet 16, joining Florida Gulf Coast in 2013 and Oral Roberts last season. The Peacocks faced No. 3 seed Purdue University in the East Regional semifinal in Philadelphia on Friday, March 25, after press time. Saint Peter’s clinched an NCAA tournament berth with the 60-54 win over Monmouth University in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament championship game, in which Edert scored a game-high 20 points. Edert averages 9.7 points this season. He has shot an impressive 47.4 percent from the field, including 42.4 percent from 3-point range, and an eye-popping 88.5 percent in free throws. Edert, with his signature mustache and floppy hair, has seen his popularity skyrocket. He signed a promotional deal with a national restaurant/sports bar franchise in the wake of the NCAA wins. Edert was a key player for Bergen Catholic in Oradell. As a senior in 2019, Edert helped Bergen Catholic to the state’s ultimate game, the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Tournament of Champions final, where it lost to Ranney, 67-63. Edert was the team’s second-leading scorer in that game with 13 points. That was the last time the TOC was held before this season. The TOC was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. Saint Peter’s is guided by head coach Shaheen Holloway, a former star player at Seton Hall University. Holloway was the point guard on the SHU team that went to the Sweet 16, the last time a New Jersey school reached the Sweet 16 before Saint Peter’s did it this year.

Boys volleyball program debuts (Continued from Page 30) es for the girls volleyball team, as well. So to be able to have the opportunity to work with the boys and be a part of the inaugural season is really special. The guys come in excited to work every day and have been having a blast on the court! Our goals this season are to help our players develop their skills and have a ton of fun in the process. Beyond that, we want to cultivate a strong program. We intend to show the school community what a fantastic sport volleyball is, and what a good time our guys have playing it.” The NHS Raiders will begin the season on Saturday, April 2,

when they host Millburn at 10 a.m. Following the opener, Nutley will visit Bloomfield on Tuesday, April 5, at 4 p.m., and host Hoboken on Friday, April 8, at 4:30 p.m. Other home games include Thursday, April 14, at 4 p.m. against Irvington; Saturday, April 16, at 11 a.m. against Orange; Thursday, April 21, at 4 p.m., against Hoboken; Thursday, April 28, at 4 p.m., against East Orange Campus; Thursday, May 5, at 4 p.m., against Montclair; Monday, May 9, at 5:30 p.m., against Paterson Kennedy; and Thursday, May 19, at 4:30 p.m., against Paterson Charter.
