BHS marching band resurrects itself and famous composer

By Amanda Valentovic Staff Writer Johann Sebastian Bach rose from the dead in Belleville this year, as the Belleville High School marching band returned a sense of normalcy to the 2021 season after the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on the 2020 fall season, six months after lockdowns started and sent students home for virtual classes.

“Decomposers: Bach from the Grave,” which debuted at Doc Ellis Field in September, is a zombie-themed journey through the baroque composer’s music.

After a season sans competition with only a few home-football-game performances last year, the BHS band members got back into uniform this fall to perform for crowds again.

“It’s good to come back,” band Director Ray Sentina said in a phone interview with the Belleville Post on Oct. 18. “It’s been a readjustment for me and the kids.

We have to be wary of protocols, but we’re having fun.”

Sentina announced the show in April, after it became clear that it would be safe enough for a somewhat normal season to happen. Football games have fans in the stands again and competitions are back on the calendar, so the Buccaneers have an audience to play for this season.

“When I announced the show in April, they came hungry,” Sentina said about the band and color guard members at BHS, saying all the necessary pandemic precautions are taken if rehearsals have to be moved inside because of weather. “If they have to wear masks and use bell covers because that’s what it takes to play music, they’ll do it.”

Because 2020 was such a departure from what a normal marching band season looks like, a majority of this year’s band members are new to marching.

BFD bike patrol instituted Among the 1,000 or so residents who attended the township’s inaugural Green Fair on Sept. 18 was one young man who scraped his leg. Help arrived quickly despite the heavy crowds, and the boy’s wounds were soon cleaned and dressed.

It didn’t take long for the Belleville Fire Department’s new bike patrol to demonstrate that it can be a nimble, fast-responding service at fairs, concerts, sporting events or other public venues where highly trained personnel are required.

The department has launched its new program with two EMT-trained firefighters, Dat Khong and Manny Antonio.

“The Belleville Fire Department has always been committed to the safety and well-being of our residents,” Fire Chief John Olivieri said. “Our new bike patrol just gives us a new and innovative way to provide that service.”

Battalion Chief George Del Grande was inspired to form a bike patrol during a 5K charity run in the township.

Members of the Belleville Police Department’s bike patrol were able to follow the runners closely and join in the festivities.

Fire department personnel, who had only large vehicles, such as ambulances, at their disposal, were nowhere near as nimble.

Olivieri agreed that a bike patrol could help the fire department better serve the community, but the question soon became: How do you start one?

Few fire departments deploy bike

patrols, so Del Grande couldn’t count on getting much guidance. One great advantage, however, was the fact that Belleville’s police department was running a 40-hour program to certify riders.

After Khong and Antonio had finished their training, they were ready to debut at the Green Fair at Belleville High School.

Atop their Fuji-brand bikes, which were assembled by Borderline Bikes, a locally owned business, Khong and Antonio pedaled around the fair and remained vigilant in case emergency assistance was needed.

The public’s positive response to the bike patrol reinforced plans to train more firefighters for this growing corps.

“Our bikes are equipped with almost everything you would have on an ambulance in terms of lifesaving equipment,” Del Grande said. “They have equipment such as a defibrillator, oxygen, Narcan and trauma kits. They can respond to emergencies ranging from a broken leg to a drug overdose to a heart attack.”

“The bike patrol’s presence at the Green Fair let everyone know that they would be in good hands in the event of a medical emergency,” Mayor Michael Melham said. “They were welcomed with open arms, and certainly complement the tremendous work of our police department and other emergency responders.

“We are fortunate to have such dedicated and creative men and women in the fire department, looking out for our safety.”

Be welcomed back to the theater with splendid ‘Songs’

By Debbie L. Hochberg Correspondent “The Paper Mill is back!” These words from the producing artistic director of the Paper Mill Playhouse, Mark S. Hoebee, were music to our ears as a new season began on Sunday night, Oct. 17 — the theater’s first opening night in 616 days. It was a moment filled with emotion and not to be forgotten; the thunderous applause after his words said it all. We stood in line to get in, as we usually do — but this time, instead of just showing tickets, we also presented our proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result and photo ID. And everyone seemed more than happy to do it.

On opening night there is always a festive atmosphere, but this time it was opening night on steroids. You could feel the joy in everyone’s hearts to be back in the theater, and it felt like the world might finally be returning to some degree of normalcy.

Maybe a new normal, with everyone all masked up, but a kind of normal nonetheless. Going to a show! It is always a privilege, but none of us could have ever imagined what a grand privilege it is prior to the pandemic. Let’s hope we never take these moments for granted again.

Ironically, the last show to be performed at the Paper Mill before the coronavirus pandemic shut everything down was titled “Unmasked.” And the first show of the new season, fittingly, is titled “Songs for a New World,” a theatrical song cycle with music and lyrics by Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown and directed

by Hoebee, whose leadership earned the Paper Mill the Regional Theatre Tony Award in 2016, among many other accomplishments.

As always, the Paper Mill brings us superb, accomplished actors with stellar performances under their belts. The four actors in this show are Roman Banks, who made his Broadway debut as the first person of color to play Evan Hansen in “Dear Evan Hansen”; Carolee Carmello and Andrew Kober, who have both appeared in many Broadway shows; and Mia Pinero, whose concert credits include performances at Lincoln Center and who has appeared in regional shows. All said and done, these four actors are all outstanding artists.

The four actors, through their songs, tell the audience about a major change happening in their lives; whether their

stories are funny, poignant, sad or hopeful, they are all memorable and beautifully told. In “Stars and the Moon,” Carmello, a standout actress, sings with humor and pathos of suitors who promise her a beautiful life filled with love, adventure and passion, but are lacking in material riches. She winds up with a man who can provide the most opulent material pleasures but after many years realizes she’d rather have the moon — the moon and the stars in this song being a metaphor for meaning and authenticity. The backdrop for this song is stunning: a very large, alluring moon against a dazzling starry black night.

Kober sings to us of love and betrayal time and again in his solid storytelling voice, and Banks’ physical acting and storytelling are nice to see as he jumps and glides around the stage — even doing a perfect moonwalk! He also tells us stories through his emotion-filled voice and leads his co-actors in “The Steam Train,” which is nicely choreographed by Kenny Ingram.

Pinero has an angelic voice, which reminds me, having raised a daughter, of the quintessential Disney princess voice.

Her songs are a treat to listen to, and she has a sweetness about her as she sings her stories. In “I’m Not Afraid of Anything,” she talks about all the things she is not afraid of, but at the end of the song we learn why she is not afraid — maybe, the song suggests, it is because she has put up a wall and does not let anything or anyone get past that wall.

The set by Kelly James Tighe is quite simple but clever. The orchestra is on stage in a dimly lit background, and, except for a few small props, such as a chair or a cigarette holder, the show relies on its ever-changing backdrop to set the scene. This allows the focus to be on the actors and their stories. The lighting by Charlie Morrison also complements the stories and is in parts playful and fun and other times dramatic.

Sinai Tabak amazingly plays the piano while conducting the orchestra. He is onstage with the rest of the orchestra and he is incredible. We loved watching him, too!

Contested BOE elections in Belleville and Nutley

By Yael Katzwer Editor This election season is shaping up to be fairly quiet in Essex County, with few contested elections and foregone conclusions for some of the contested races. The biggest question on the ballot this upcoming Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 2, is the choice for governor.

Democratic incumbent Gov. Phil Murphy, with running mate Lt. Gov. Sheila Y. Oliver, will be facing off against Republi-

can challenger Jack Ciattarelli, with running mate Diane Allen. Also running for governor and lieutenant governor are the teams of Joanne Kuniansky and Vivian M. Sahner on the Socialist Workers Party ticket; Madelyn R. Hoffman and Heather Warburton on the Green Party ticket; and Gregg Mele and Eveline Brownstein on the Libertarian Party ticket.

There are also two state public questions for voters to consider; both concern gambling statutes. In the first question,

voters are being asked to decide whether the state should pass a constitutional amendment to allow wagering on postseason college sport competitions held in New Jersey and competitions in which a New Jersey–based college team participates. The second question regards whether to allow organizations that are permitted to hold raffles to keep the raffle proceeds to support themselves.

Countywide, voters must elect the sheriff, a three-year term. Running for office are Democratic incumbent Armando B. Fontoura, who has been serving as Essex County sheriff since 1990, and Republican challenger Nicholas G. Pansini.

Residents in the 28th Legislative District must choose between Democratic incumbents and Republican challengers for state Senate and Assembly. The Democratic incumbents are Ronald L. Rice for state Senate and Cleopatra G. Tucker and Ralph Caputo for Assembly. Republican challengers are Frank Contella for state Senate and Monique Headen and Anthony D’Angelo for Assembly. Rice has served as a state senator since 1986, and Tucker and Caputo have served as Assembly members since 2008.

In the 29th Legislative District, state Sen. M. Teresa Ruiz, the Democratic incumbent, is running unopposed; Ruiz has served in the state Senate since 2008.

Running for the two state Assembly seats are Democratic incumbents Shanique

Speight and Eliana Pintor Marin, and independent challenger Debra Salters, who is running under the slogan “Salters for All.” Speight has been an assemblywoman since 2018 and Pintor Marin since 2013.

The Belleville Board of Education race gives voters a lot of options, with six candidates running for two open seats.

Incumbents Christine Lamparello and Nelson Barrera are seeking to reclaim their seats; Barrerra is running under the slogan “Keep Progress Going.” They will face challengers Nicole Coviello-Daddis under the slogan “Belleville’s Children First,” Tracy Williams under the slogan “Together We Achieve,” Lissa Missaggia under the slogan “Excellence in Education” and Ruben A. Rodriguez.

The Nutley Board of Education race also has a large number of candidates, with seven individuals running for just three open seats. Incumbents Kenneth J. Reilly, under the slogan “Keep Your Promises,” and Theresa Quirk are seeking reelection. Challengers are Nicholas Scotti under the slogan “Nutley Families First,” Jeffrey Polewka, Daniel Fraginals under the slogan “A New Voice,” Joe Battaglia and David Kay under the slogan “Putting Kids First.”

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 2, and there are multiple ways for county residents to vote, such as by mail, early inperson voting, via drop box and in person on the day.

‘Decomposers’ brings classical music and chills to BHS (Continued from Page 1) Sophomores who normally have a year of experience under their belt at this point are basically rookies. Even the juniors and seniors, who are the only ones who remember what a regular season is like, have had to adjust.

“A lot of us are captains and leaders,” senior drum major Ysabelle Lladoc said in a phone interview with the Belleville Post on Oct. 20. “We have new roles while also learning the ropes, which has been interesting. There are things I’m still getting used to.”

A flute player, Lladoc is on the field marching for one song in this year’s show and is on the podium conducting the other two. Seeing the show from higher up is a new perspective she hasn’t experienced before this year.

“You see everything and are responsible for the whole band,” she said.

She and the other student leaders have done a good job of teaching the rookies, according to Sentina. Teaching marching basics to more novices than normal has been a big undertaking.

“Younger members don’t have a concept of what this was like,” he said. “The older ones do remember. They’ve taken them under their wings, and run right into it enthusiastically.”

Lladoc said the new members, who have had to learn a lot of lessons in not a lot of time, have caught on quickly. The band members jelled again quickly after

not being able to spend a lot of time with one another in the last year and a half.

“It was surprisingly easy to get back into,” Lladoc said. “It’s a totally new bag for a lot of people, so it’s actually their rookie year even if they’re sophomores.

It’s been awesome to watch them improve.”

BHS has done well in competition this year; they won first place, best music, best marching and best percussion in Class B

at Midland Park High School’s competition a few weeks ago. Their final competition of the season was at Wayne Hills High School on Oct. 23. But the trophies haven’t been the best part of 2021.

“I missed being able to hang out with everyone,” Lladoc said of the 2020 season. “The magic of it is that there’s this group of people who you might not have anything else in common with except that you play an instrument. We’re all really

good friends. Last year I would be at home and looking at the clock and thinking, I would normally still be at school now, or at band practice or theater rehearsal. I missed having those things.”

The staff was as excited to be back on the field as the performers.

“It’s reminding me of what this activity is supposed to bring,” Sentina said.

“We’ve been thinking, ‘Oh, this is what performing feels like!’”

Essex County to begin its fall 2021 leaf collection Essex County’s 2021 leaf collection schedule for county roads has been announced. Residents whose properties are on county roads may place their leaves in biodegradable bags or sweep the loose leaves into piles at the curb.

For leaf collection on county roads, the county is divided into four sections. There will be three pickups in each section. Residents are asked to coordinate their fall cleanup activities with the leaf collection schedule. Leaves should be swept to the curb or placed in biodegradable

bags at the curb no more than seven days before the scheduled pickup time. In addition, residents are asked to pile leaves at least 10 feet from a storm drain.

The following schedule is for Section III, which consists of Belleville and East Orange: Monday, Nov. 1, to Saturday, Nov. 6; Monday, Nov. 29, to Saturday, Dec. 4; and Monday, Jan. 3, 2022, to Friday, Jan. 7, 2022. The final collection week will be used only if needed.

Essex County has entered into shared services agreements with Bloomfield, Caldwell, Essex Fells, Fairfield,

Glen Ridge, Livingston, Montclair, North Caldwell, Nutley, Roseland, Verona and West Caldwell. In these municipalities, the local Department of Public Works will collect leaves on county roads. If your property is located on a county road in one of these towns, consult your municipal public works department for more information or to obtain a schedule.

SAL 105 holds side-splitting ‘A Night of Comedy’ Sons of the American Legion Squadron 105 of Belleville hosted “A Night of Comedy,” a comedy show run by the SAL statelevel Detachment of New Jersey to benefit the Child Welfare Foundation. The comedy show, featuring four professional comedians, had more than 50 attendees.

Following the show, Squadron 105 also made a $1,000 donation to the CWF. The Child Welfare Foundation, though itself an independent charity, is perhaps one of the American Legion’s largest philanthropies. “Established in 1954, the American Legion Child Welfare Foundation was developed as a repository of funds from individuals who wished to contribute to the betterment of children in

this country,” according to the CWF website. “Our foremost philanthropic priority is to contribute to the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual welfare of children and youth by aiding progress in the field of child welfare through dissemination of knowledge about research, studies, surveys (and) projects, or by supporting programs and activities benefiting the welfare of children and youth.”

Each year, the Detachment of New Jersey, which is the state-level organization of the Sons of the American Legion in New Jersey, runs a committee under its Children and Youth Commission that donates to the national CWF. For the past few years, the chairperson has been Mark

Natale of Squadron 338 in Leonardo.

Continuing an initiative he began last year, Natale hosted a series of comedy shows throughout New Jersey to benefit the Child Welfare Foundation.

For the first time, the comedy show was held at Post 105 on Washington Avenue in Belleville, on Oct. 2. Held at the John Bezzera Patio behind the post, the professional comedians who performed included Sean Morton, Carla Oakerson, Mike Keegan and headliner Terry McNeely. McNeely has previously performed on “The Daily Show” and on Comedy Central, and has made many television appearances on shows such as “Blue Bloods” and “Law & Order.”

With perfect weather, guests were treated to food provided by members and friends of Post 105 and Squadron 105, which included sausage and peppers, and chicken Savoy. The show began at 7 p.m., and participants did nothing but laugh for the following two hours.

Natale, also a detachment vice commander, spoke at the conclusion of the show to thank everyone, noting, “It truly has been a great night for a great cause.”

SAL 105 Cmdr. Steve Sangemino then gave his appreciation for everyone who came out, and informed Natale that SAL 105 had voted at the previous meeting to donate $1,000 to the Child Welfare Foundation.

“It’s all for the kids,” Sangemino said.

Belleville heroes save man from drowning in storm Two Belleville men, Samuel Fontanez and Ivan Mancheno, who saved an 81year-old man from drowning in the surging flood waters from the remnants of Hurricane Ida, were honored for their heroism with a proclamation at the Sept.

The neighbors and close friends rushed from their nearby homes to save Rocco Cicchetti after he had slipped under the knee-high waters and could not get to his feet. Fontanez and Mancheno grabbed him up out of the water and carried him to the safety of some nearby steps, so he could regain his breath. They then walked him to his home on Fairway Avenue in the drenching rains.

“They were truly lifesavers,” Cicchetti’s daughter, Gia Stansci, said in a press release. “If they weren’t there, he would have definitely drowned because of the force of the water. Being that he’s older, he couldn’t get himself up. He went under like three times. Then he wasn’t able to get up.

“I truly believe that it was because of those two guys that my dad is still with us today,” she continued. “They saved his life.”

Cicchetti, a grandfather of two, was returning home after working his shift at the deli counter at a supermarket in Nutley.

In the darkness of the night, he misjudged how deep the waters had already become on Continental Avenue. When his car stalled, he decided to try to wade through the water. When he opened the car door, he

In the chaos of the wind, rain, lightning and thunder, they reached Cicchetti and picked him up out of the water.

“We’re trying to get him to safety and he’s saying stuff like, ‘You guys saved my life,’” Fontanez said. “We just wanted to get to safety because we were both terrified. If a transformer blew and a wire fell down into the water, that would have been a dangerous situation.”

After the flood waters subsided the next day, Mancheno located Cicchetti’s car keys. They had come to rest several blocks away, having been whisked away by the rushing water the night before.

While looking, Mancheno also located Cicchetti’s dentures, which had fallen out when he fell in the water.

$5.2M renovation completed at Hendricks golf course Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. announced Sept. 25 that a $5.2 million project to renovate and upgrade Hendricks Field Golf Course in Belleville has been completed. The improvements have completely transformed Hendricks Field Golf Course into a championship-caliber facility, according to the county.

“Hendricks Field Golf Course is a hidden jewel in our parks system and the improvements make the course even more remarkable. Not only have the playing conditions been modernized, but we have made the course more environmentally sustainable,” DiVincenzo said. “When golfers come to Hendricks, they will think they are playing on a private course. This exemplifies our ongoing initiative to provide first-class recreation facilities that meet the needs of our residents.”

The project addressed many longstanding issues affecting the course and included the redesign and addition of several holes to accommodate the practice facility being constructed for The First Tee youth golf program. While every hole was updated in some way, the historical design elements of Charles Banks, a renowned golf architect who originally designed Hendricks Field when it opened in 1929, were preserved or followed.

To replace the two holes that are being included in The First Tee facility, two new holes were created in the southern section

Tee areas were designed to accommodate all skill levels, and bunkers were also restored. Continuous paved cart paths were installed.

To promote environmental sustainability, naturalized areas were enhanced and expanded; this reduces the amount of grass areas where gas-powered mowers need to be operated. More than 100 trees were planted throughout the course, and better grass varieties were used that resist drought and require less watering and pesticide use.

Vincent Church Care Pantry supply drive The Vincent Church Care Pantry has distributed personal care items to those in need in the Nutley community for more than 25 years. Items are collected at the church, bagged for each family and distributed on the first Monday of the month from 4 to 6 p.m.

During the pandemic, the need has grown by 50 percent to more than 70 families each month. The shelves have become harder to stock due to the increased need, the pandemic limitations of usual donors, the limited stock at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey and difficulty purchasing items in bulk.

The following items are needed most: paper towels, toilet paper, household cleaners, laundry detergent, dish detergent, shampoo and deodorant. Many of these items cannot be purchased using an NJ SNAP card.

Donations can be dropped off in front of the left front door of the church Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The church

is located at 100 Vincent Place in Nutley.

Monetary donations can be made by visiting the church website’s online donation page at www.vincentumc.org/onlinedonations and noting that the donation is for the Care Pantry or by mailing checks, also marked for the Care Pantry, made out and mailed to Vincent Church, 100 Vincent Place, Nutley, NJ 07110.

Golf for a Cure postponed The 10th annual Nutley Football Alumni Golf for a Cure outing was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally scheduled for Sept. 28, 2020, it has been rescheduled for Sept. 27, 2021.

League of Women Voters endorses Essex–Hudson Greenway The Essex–Hudson Greenway Coalition, comprising the Open Space Institute, the New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition, and the September 11th National Memorial Trail Alliance, has welcomed the

endorsement of the League of Women Voters of New Jersey, the latest statewide organization to come out in support of the greenway project. For walkers, runners, cyclists, hikers and others, the proposed

greenway would create nearly 9 miles of linear park, connecting Montclair, Glen Ridge, Bloomfield, Belleville, Newark, Kearny, Secaucus and Jersey City.

“The Essex–Hudson Greenway Project upholds many long-held League of Women Voters of New Jersey principles, including providing much-needed open space, managing stormwater runoff, and enhancing the social and economic welfare of New Jersey residents,” LWVNJ Executive Direc-

The championship round was played Saturday, Oct. 2, at the newly renovated Hendricks Field Golf Course in Belleville; the first two rounds were played in September at Weequahic Golf Course in Newark and Francis Byrne Golf Course in West Orange.

Registration is open for the annual Veterans Day 5K Run/Walk, a race that is dedicated to the men and women of Belleville who have served in the U.S. military.

The race, which starts at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6, caps a full day of events to honor these brave men and women.

The proceeds will benefit a scholarship fund for a graduating Belleville High School senior, financially support participating Belleville veterans organizations and help offset the costs associated with the race.

Tickets are charged, with reduced fees for children, active and retired military, and first responders. Race shirts are guaranteed only for registrations completed prior to Oct. 28.

This is a 5K-certified course timed via disposable chip. The 5K run/walk is preceded by the townships’ annual Veterans Day Parade.

Mayor Michael Melham and the Belleville Township Council urge all residents, clubs, organizations, civic groups and sports teams to participate in the parade. Lineup begins at 10:30 a.m. at the corner of Holmes Street and Union Avenue. The parade will conclude at the Veterans Memorial at Union and Tiona avenues. Belleville students who participate will earn a “community volunteer” credit or Belleville Bucks.

Archdiocese campaign works to reconnect with disengaged Catholics The Archdiocese of Newark has just launched its new Vine and Branches campaign to inspire Catholics in Bergen, Essex, Hudson and Union counties to return to Mass now that most pandemic-related restrictions have been lifted.

Spearheaded by Auxiliary Bishop Michael A. Saporito and priests of the archdiocese, the Vine and Branches initiative will see parishes host numerous events and online engagement throughout the year to reconnect with congregation members who stopped attending Mass due to COVID-19. Additionally, the initiative will attempt to build relationships with nonparishioners through outreach efforts inviting them to join the Church.

“The parishes within our archdiocese reopened their doors for in-person Masses months ago,” Saporito said. “This effort is designed to open our doors wide to our communities and reintroduce to all that receiving Christ’s body and blood through the Eucharist is the most sacred and vital gift a Catholic can receive.”

Though the archdiocese oversees the Vine and Branches initiative, each participating parish is planning its own programming after forming committees focused on community outreach, social events, missionary work and digital strategy. Upcoming gatherings are expected to include special Masses, concerts, coffee hours and other types of parish social events. Emphasis also will be placed on communicating through technology and social media platforms in order to better reach people in today’s digital world.

“By offering these fun, faith-filled and creative activities, we hope our parishioners will recognize that it is safe to attend Mass again while appreciating the value of gathering together in community,” Saporito said, adding that the archdiocese continues to maintain and promote health and safety policies in compliance with state mandates.

“And if you’ve never been to church, these programs are the perfect entry point to start exploring your faith.”

EC board celebrates Italian American Heritage Month On Tuesday, Oct. 5, the Essex County Board of County Commissioners held its 2021 Italian Heritage Celebration via Zoom. The ceremony, which returned after a one-year hiatus due to COVID-19, celebrates Italian culture and heritage, highlighting the contributions of Italian Americans in Essex County.

Commissioner President Wayne L. Richardson opened the program with greetings to the honorees.

“We did not have this celebration last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but we are learning to navigate the new normal and are happy to resume our traditions,” he said.

District 4 Commissioner Leonard Luciano also offered greetings at the start of the ceremony.

“I am honored to be here alongside my commissioner colleagues to celebrate Italian heritage and recognize the achievements of a few members of our Italian American community here in Essex County,” Luciano said.

This year, the board recognized Sgt. Joseph J. Corio of the Bloomfield Police Department; New Jersey Board of Public Utilities President Joseph Fiordaliso, of Livingston; Montclair Deputy Mayor and 1st Ward Councilman William Hurlock; and Dr. Frank Mazzarella, chief continuum care officer at Clara Maass Medical Center.

Corio, who was introduced by Commissioner Vice President Carlos Pomares, has been a sergeant in the Bloomfield Police Department since June 2014 and the Traffic Division supervisor since August 2020. He joined the Bloomfield Police Department in 1998, and in May 2007 he was voted president of Bloomfield PBA Local 32.

He embraced this difficult task and has worked diligently to maintain the integrity of what is commonly referred to as the strongest PBA local in the state. He is a member of the Bloomfield Police Department Honor Guard and the Essex County Rapid Development Team.

Fiordaliso, who was introduced by Commissioner Patricia Sebold, was initially appointed to the NJBPU in 2005 and has served as president since 2018. He was born and raised in the Ironbound section of Newark. He is a first-generation American on his father’s side, as his father was born in Sicily. In addition to his leadership with respect to environmental responsibility, combating climate change and improving energy efficiency, he has an extensive record as a public servant. He was elected to the Livingston Township Council in 1988, served for three terms, and was elected mayor three times during his tenure. In 2003, he was named “Citizen of the Year”

To recognize the longstanding Italian American heritage present in the Montclair community, he helped establish the sister city program between Montclair and Aquilonia, Italy. He has participated in numerous events here and in Italy as part of that collaboration. He is an honorary member of the Club Aquilonese San Vito Society of Montclair and works closely with the Our Lady of Mount Carmel community outreach program.

Mazzarella, who was introduced by Commissioner Robert Mercado, oversees the successful transfer of patients to services that are needed throughout their care at Clara Maass, up to and including discharge and postcare treatment. His work was especially key during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when he managed patient transfers across the state to allow for additional patient admissions at Clara Maass. medical administrator, he operated a successful private internal medicine practice in Nutley from 1982 to 2001.

Teacher from Nutley pleads guilty to health care fraud A public school teacher from Essex County has admitted his role in conspiring to defraud the New Jersey School Employees’ Health Benefits Program with phony claims for medically unnecessary prescriptions, acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig announced Sept. 22.

Jason Nardachone, 51, of Nutley, who taught in the Lodi School District, pleaded guilty by videoconference before U.S. District Judge John Michael Vazquez to an indictment charging him with one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud.

According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court, Nardachone participated in a scheme to defraud the SEHBP by knowingly causing the billing of medically unnecessary compounded medications, such as metabolic

vitamins, pain creams and scar creams, for himself and three other teachers. From September 2015 through February 2016, Nardachone and others received medically unnecessary compounded medications that cost the SEHBP various amounts of money, from $3,300 to $22,800 per medication. Nardachone bribed the three other teachers with monthly payments of $500 in exchange for their agreement to obtain compounded medications they did not need. The scheme resulted in losses to the SEHBP of more than $550,000.

The count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, or twice the gross gain or loss from the offense. Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 1, 2022.

Belleville man sentenced to 35 years in prison Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II announced Oct. 18 that Jose Santana, 60, of Belleville, was sentenced to 35 years in state prison by Superior Court Judge Martin Cronin for sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl.

On Nov. 15, 2019, Santana was convicted by an Essex County jury of three counts of aggravated sexual assault, two counts of sexual assault, one count of possession of child pornography and one count of endangering the welfare of a child. Sentencing was delayed because of the pandemic; Santana was incarcerated while awaiting sentencing.

On Friday, Oct. 15, Cronin sentenced Santana to 35 years in prison. Under the No Early Release Act, he must serve 85 percent of his sentence before he will be eligible for parole.

“Hopefully, this will give closure to the family and this little girl will be able to rest easy knowing her brave actions will prevent him from hurting her or anyone else in the future,” said Assistant Prosecutor Peter C. Polidoro, who tried the case with Assistant Prosecutor Tony Gutierrez.

The assaults occurred on multiple occasions while the little girl was visiting Santana and his wife at their Belleville residence.

In addition to sexually assaulting the victim, Santana forced her to watch child pornography while the assaults occurred.

When officers executed a search warrant at the defendant’s home, they discovered child pornography on his computer.

“I hope that this sentence of 35 years sends a clear message that sexual abuse of a child will not be tolerated and will be punished severely,” Gutierrez said.

Stephens lauded the ECPO’s Special Victims Unit and forensic investigation unit, Wynona’s House Child Advocacy Center, and Belleville Police Department for bringing this case to a successful conclusion.

Man charged with luring, sexually assaulting a minor in Essex County Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II and Belleville Police Chief Mark Minichini announced Oct. 13 that a North Arlington man has been arrested and charged with sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child and luring a minor.

Bradley O’Dell, 57, was taken into custody on Friday, Oct. 8, without incident.

The victim, a 13-year-old Belleville resident, reported encountering the defendant on an online dating app. After exchanging messages with the child online, the defendant arranged for the juvenile victim to meet him in person, at which point the defendant allegedly sexually assaulted the victim. It is alleged that the sexual assaults occurred on three separate occasions over the course of September. The sexual assaults allegedly occurred in Belleville, Lyndhurst and Nutley.

O’Dell was charged following an investigation by the Belleville Police Department.

“This case highlights how important it is for parents to play an active role in their children’s online behavior and to monitor usage of social media,” Stephens said.

Acting Attorney General Andrew J. Bruck announced Oct. 4 that the Division of Consumer Affairs has reached a settlement agreement for more than $138,000 involving five Essex County gas stations that were found to be overcharging consumers, including by selling regular fuel as premium.

The agreement resolves the investigation led by the division’s Office of Weights and Measures and Office of Consumer Protection into violations of multiple New Jersey consumer protection laws and regulations following unannounced fuel quality inspections at several gas stations.

In addition to making a monetary payment, K.P. Fuel Corp., BK Fuel Inc., DS Fuel Corp., Millennium Fuel Inc. and Harb and Parm Inc., and their owner Sukhdev Singh, of Belleville, have agreed to display the accurate price of any motor fuel they offer or sell and not to misrepresent one grade of fuel as another.

“New Jersey drivers should be able to fill their gas tanks without getting taken for a ride,” Bruck said. “Gas stations are on notice that we won’t stand for them cheating their customers. The sale of regular gas as premium not only causes consumers to overpay but also threatens damage to their vehicles.”

The majority of cars on the road today run on regular gas, but some vehicles require premium, which contains higher levels of octane and typically costs about 50 cents more per gallon. Regular gasoline in a vehicle designed to use premium can self-ignite. This can lead to a persist-

ent knocking sound in the engine and, in severe cases, can cause significant engine damage, such as broken connecting rods and melted pistons.

“Whether consumers choose regular or premium gasoline for their vehicles, we want them to know that our office is committed to ensure that they get what they pay for at the pump,” acting Director of Consumer Affairs Sean P. Neafsey said. “I applaud the Office of Weights and Measures for their diligent fuel quality inspections and everyone responsible for implementing greater accountability.”

The division conducted its inspections between July 31, 2019, and Sept. 25, 2020.

Its investigation concerned violations of the Consumer Fraud Act; the Weights and Measures Act; the Motor Fuels Act; the Regulations Governing the Retail Sale of Motor Fuels; and the Scales, Instruments and Devices Regulations.

The respondent gas stations are: KP Fuel at 864 Mount Prospect Ave. in Newark; BK Fuel, 108 Bloomfield Ave. in Newark; Millennium Fuel, 113-119 Franklin St. in Belleville; DS Fuel, 605 Washington Ave. in Belleville; and Harb and Parm Inc., doing business as Power Service Center, 456 W. Market St. in Newark.

Under the terms of the consent order, the respondents also agreed to maintain weighing and measuring devices in proper operating condition at the gas stations, to exhibit all required documentation for inspection and examination, and to comply with all state and federal laws and regulations.

The total settlement of more than $138,000 includes $114,200 in civil penalties and $24,319 in investigative costs and attorneys’ fees. Under the terms of the order, $27,519 in civil penalties are suspended and will be automatically vacated after one year if the respondents comply with the terms of the order.

Local youths create PSAs about Tourette syndrome It’s not a joke. It’s not a punchline. It’s not an excuse. Those are the refrains from four youth advocates who live with Tourette syndrome, a neurobiological disorder characterized by uncontrollable movements or vocalizations known as tics. The disorder is often portrayed in movies or TV as a joke, used by those with a platform as an excuse for misbehavior, or is faked on social media for attention.

“We felt it was time to make a statement about Tourette syndrome and what it really is,” New Jersey Center for Tourette Syndrome and Associated Disorders Executive Director Patricia Phillips said. NJCTS created a series of public service announcements with the help of production company Grey Sky Studios out of Rockaway. “In the last few years we have seen celebrities, politicians and even those in the news media use TS as a joke or an insult. Then there are those on social media who fake tics to get views and likes.

Our kids and adults with TS deserve better than having people use a disorder they struggle with on a daily basis as fodder to gain laughs.”

The participants in the PSAs have all been outspoken advocates for NJCTS who have given presentations to students, teachers, law enforcement and medical professionals in the past as part of the organization’s youth development program.

Jenna Smith, 18, of Scotch Plains, believes more people need to be educated about TS. “One of the hardest things about hav-

ing TS is feeling or being misunderstood,” the Duke University freshman said. “If we can take the time to educate people, I think they would be more empathetic to the situation and less likely to use TS as the butt of a joke.”

Smith was joined by Dominic Dominguez, 19, of Bloomfield; Paige Kowalski, 18, of Plainsboro; and Mateo Acevedo, 15, of Belleville. The teens are aware of the increased use of tics on platforms such as TikTok. While some on TikTok use the social media channel to bring awareness to the disorder, others use it to fake tics for attention.

“It’s not right to fake tics, bully others or make fun of Tourette,” said Acevedo, a high school student. “And it’s not an excuse for someone else’s bad behavior.”

As many as one in 100 people show signs of TS or other tic disorders but many times go undiagnosed. Dominguez pointed out that it’s not just tics.

“Every person with TS is different and fights their own battles. I was so depressed that I couldn’t get out of bed for months,” he said. In fact, more than 86 percent of those with the disorder also struggle with associated disorders such as ADHD, OCD, anxiety and depression.

County announces winners of annual photo contest Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. presented awards to the eight winners in the annual Essex County Parks Photography Contest. Winners were awarded in adult and youth categories.

“We congratulate the winners of the Essex County Parks Photography Contest and thank all the contestants for sharing what they experienced in our historic parks system,” DiVincenzo said. “Events like these encourage our residents to visit our open spaces and share their artistic talents. All these photographs capture the beauty and highlight the diversity and natural splendor of our parks, reservations and recreation facilities.”

In the adult category, Nutley resident Gary Wiener received first place for “Yanticaw Park,” Belleville resident Michelle Palmer received second place for “Branch Brook Park Cherry Blossoms,” Cedar Grove resident John Shiever received third place for “Verona Park” and West Orange resident Joshua Goodman received an honorable mention for “Turtle Back Zoo — Train.”

In the youth category, Cedar Grove resident Giancarlo Morana received first place for “West Essex Trail,” Livingston resident Maya Strand received second place for “South Mountain Reservation,” Livingston resident Hannah Bilancia received third place for “Tiger Swallowtail on Sweet Pepperbush at Orange Reservoir” and North Caldwell resident Elise Linn received an honorable mention for “Grover Cleveland Park.”

The contest was sponsored by the Essex County Environmental Center and judged by members of the Essex County Photography Club. All photographs were to have been taken within the boundaries of the Essex County Parks system during the past year. Entries were judged on creativity, technical superiority, composition and the photograph’s depiction of the uniqueness of the Essex County Parks system.

All photographs remain on display at the Essex County Environmental Center throughout October.

DiGregorio’s legacy as a Raider will live on forever Nutley HS alumnus and former head football coach experienced special thrills in his career

By Joe Ragozzino Sports Editor Not many high school football head coaches can say they were able to coach at their alma mater and lead the team to a state championship game.

Not many coaches can also say that they led their alma mater to an undefeated season in their final year of coaching.

Steve DiGregorio was able to experience and cherish those special thrills.

Affectionately known as “Coach D,” DiGregorio, a true Nutley High School Raider at heart, died on Oct. 12 after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.

He was 60.

In his seventh year as the NHS head coach, DiGregorio led the Raiders to the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3, championship game in 2010 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. It was the first year of the stadium, which was then called New Meadowlands Stadium.

Though the Raiders lost to Morristown on that cold, late Saturday afternoon to end a strong 8-4 season, it had to be a special thrill for DiGregorio, an NHS graduate, Class of 1979, to lead his alma mater to the biggest game. It was the team’s first appearance in a state championship game since 1995. It was only the fifth and last time the Raiders have been

to a state championship game under the current state format that began in 1974.

After serving as head football coach and athletic director at Paramus Catholic, DiGregorio, who was a lineman and team captain for the Raiders in his senior year, returned to his alma mater in 2004 to become the head coach. He also became a teacher of U.S. government at the school.

He previously coached at Princeton University, where he mentored Jason Garrett, the former Princeton quarterback, former Dallas Cowboys head coach and current New York Giants offensive coordinator. DiGregorio also coached current Princeton University head football coach Bob Surace. DiGregorio was living in Princeton — where he had lived, along with his family, for many years — at the time of his death.

In 2009, the Raiders were one game away from reaching the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3, final, but lost to West Morris, which was led by future NFL fullback Michael Burton, at Tangorra Field/Park Oval. But the following year, the Raiders gained a measure of redemption as they made an inspiring run in the postseason, winning road games against Colonia and Rahway to reach the title game for the first time in 15 years.

RIVALS CLASH — The Nutley and Belleville high school football teams clashed in Belleville’s home opener on Sept. 10 as the new turf field was unveiled at Doc Ellis Field. Nutley won a thriller, 29-28. Both teams are enjoying fine seasons. The Nutley Raiders were 6-1 and the Belleville Buccaneers were 4-3 through week 7.

Coach DiGregorio remembered (Continued from Page 30) The next year, the Raiders lost at Parsippany Hills in the first round of the playoffs. DiGregorio stepped down at the end of that season, handing the reins to his assistant coach, Tom Basile. DiGregorio came back for his second stint with the Raiders, succeeding Basile, in 2017.

In 2019, DiGregorio was diagnosed with cancer. While DiGregorio was receiving treatment, JD Vick, his longtime assistant coach, served as interim head coach. But DiGregorio remained involved with the Raiders. He was honored at a home game against Lincoln, with his wife of 30 years, Nadia, and their three sons, Zack, Aaron and Derek, by his side. The Raiders won the game, 27-7, as DiGregorio was triumphantly carried off the field by his players.

DiGregorio came back to coach the Raiders in 2020 while Vick went back to being one of his assistants. Despite the challenges of the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Raiders completed their season with a 6-0 record.

Due to the pandemic, there was no postseason.

It was the fourth unbeaten season in program history and the first since 1939.

The program began in 1919.

DiGregorio retired as head coach in March 2021, finishing with 62 career wins at the NHS helm, which ranks second all-time in the program. Vick was then named the head coach.

“Coach D will be missed by all that knew him, and that is a lot of people,” stated Vick, an Alabama native who was grateful to DiGregorio for selecting him to be on the Raiders coaching staff.

“Never knew anyone who knew more people than he did. You could not be around Coach D and not be impacted by him. He was a very good teacher, great coach, a true friend, and a loving husband and father.

“You wanted him in your corner. He would fight for you,” continued Vick. “His impact on Nutley will be felt for years to come. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wonderful family.”

DiGregorio was an inspiration to countless people, on and off the field.

Bob Searle graduated with DiGregorio at NHS. They were also teammates for the Raiders. Like DiGregorio, Searle was a lineman.

“He was such a selfless guy,” said Searle of DiGregorio. “That was his focus.

His mother and father and sister were the same type of people. His mother would pack us all in their house and feed the whole football team. They were just nice people, and they passed it on to him. He was one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. It was never about him, even when he was sick. He always had a smile on his face.

He kept going. He never really talked about himself and his accomplishments;

he was more excited about everybody else’s accomplishments.”

Searle’s nephew, Billy Searle, played for DiGregorio and was an all-state lineman for the Raiders, graduating in June 2021. Billy Searle is a freshman at Wilkes University in Pennsylvania, where he is continuing his football career as an offensive lineman.

For DiGregorio, completing a season undefeated was a great way to end his career. Coach D, a true Raider at heart, went out a winner. In the hearts and minds of the Raider community, his legacy will live on forever.
