Belleville High brings ‘Songs for a New World’ to our new world amid pandemic

By Yael Katzwer Editor Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, residents have been forced to adapt to a new world. While this may not have been the “new world” Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown meant when he wrote “Songs for a New World,” it is certainly apt. Embracing this new world of social distance and virtual events, the Belleville High School Theatre Arts Company has brought “Songs for a New World” to life and to the high school’s stage.

The show will be broadcast Friday, June 4, and Saturday, June 5, at 8 p.m.; and

Sunday, June 6, at 3 p.m. To purchase tickets, visit https://tinyurl.com/ebz7t2e9. “‘Songs for a New World’ is not your typical or traditional musical, which is what makes it a perfect choice for an anything-but-typical year,” director Carol Lombardi, a BHS teacher, told the Belleville Post on May 11. “This show is actually what is called a ‘song cycle.’

Rather than one story focusing on the same characters throughout, punctuated with musical numbers that progress that plot, each scene and song in this show is its own short story. The settings, plots and characters of these stories are unrelated

and do not intersect, but, ultimately, they all relate back to a central, unifying theme: the theme of change and the choices we make when confronted with that moment of change. This theme is extremely relevant and relatable after the year we have all experienced.

“I have actually always wanted to take on this show — the music is challenging and energetic, and the stories compelling; but because of its unorthodox nature, I always wound up selecting a more traditional show year after year,” Lombardi continued. “But because this year was a year See STUDENT, Page 4

Celebrating 500 years of Catholicism in the Philippines The Archdiocese of Newark, in conjunction with the Diocese of Paterson, is honoring the 500th anniversary of the first Mass in the Philippines with a yearlong jubilee celebration consisting of a special pilgrimage and several other cultural festivities that will enable Filipino parishioners to celebrate their faith.

Those participating in the pilgrimage will follow a replica of the jubilee cross — which Ferdinand Magellan erected at the first Mass in the Philippines 500 years ago — and statues of Santo Nino de Cebu and Our Lady of Manaoag as they travel each month to 12 churches with large Filipino populations throughout the Archdiocese.

The pilgrimage will include St. Raphael Church, 346 E. Mount Pleasant Ave. in Livingston, on June 6; Holy Trinity Church, 2367 Lemoine Ave. in Fort Lee, on July 4; Sacred Heart Church, 63 E. Main St. in Rockaway, on Aug. 1; Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 120 Prospect St. in Nutley, on Sept. 5; St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, 220 E. Blancke St. in Linden, on Oct. 3; Our Lady of Mercy Church, 40 Sullivan Drive in Jersey City, on Nov. 7; and St. John the Evangelist Church, 29 N. Washington Ave. in Bergenfield, on Dec. 5.

Additionally, all parishioners are invited to attend a celebration of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila and Saint Pedro Calungsod at Newark’s Sacred Heart Cathedral Basilica in September, followed by the observance of Simbang Gabi at the cathedral on Dec. 14. Then, in March 2022, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, archbishop of Newark, will celebrate an anniversary Mass commemorating the Gospel’s arrival in the Philippines on March 31, 1521.

Tobin recently wrote a pastoral letter acknowledging the exemplary faith of Filipino Catholics around the world, including the 46 priests and 56,361 parishioners within the Archdiocese of Newark.

To accommodate such fervent devotion, the Archdiocese has incorporated Filipino religious traditions into the jubilee cross pilgrimage. Belleville PD promotes first Latina, two others Barbara Bermudez was bursting with pride when she became the first Latina in the history of the Belleville Police Department to be promoted.

“It’s just one more door that’s opening for all of us,” she said, after being promoted to sergeant during a ceremony at Town Hall on April 12. “It’s an amazing accomplishment, and I am so proud to be the first one.”

Bermudez, Capt. Frank Pignataro and Lt. William Washington took the oath, as administered by Mayor Michael Melham, during the brief ceremony attended by friends, family and fellow police officers.

For Bermudez, it was a long journey to arrive at her place in Belleville history. She spent 10 years working as a teacher before listening to a voice deep inside that kept saying police work was her true calling.

“I want to help,” she said. “I want to be part of my community. I want to give 110 percent to everything that I do.”

Even with Police Chief Mark Minichini, Councilmen Steve Rovell and Vinny Cozzarelli, and township manager Anthony Iacono in attendance, Bermudez’s historymaking promotion seemed to resonate most deeply with Councilwoman Naomy De Pena.

“Thank you, Sgt. Bermudez, for helping keep the residents of Belleville safe and secure these past eight years,” De Pena said. “From one Latina who works hard for this town to another, I applaud your service and thank you for being a trailblazer in Belleville.”

Several members of Bermudez’s family also shared in the big day, including her husband, a corrections officer in Essex County; her sister, a police officer in Clifton; her cousin, a police officer in Newark; her son; her mother; and her mother’s wife, a state corrections officer.

Washington, a member of the department’s SWAT team, can trace his decision

to dedicate his life to law enforcement to when he was about to graduate from Rutgers University.

“I didn’t want to sit in an office,” said Washington, who has been a member of the police department since 2003. “I decided I would rather help people, protect and serve, and enjoy being outside, running around.”

Washington said the best part of being a police officer is those moments when someone expresses true appreciation.

“When you see people on their worst day — you don’t recognize them, but they recognize you,” he said. “They come up to you and say, ‘I thank you for what you did for me that day.’ It meant a lot that you took the time out to speak to them or you helped them out with their situation.

That’s the best part.”

For Pignataro, his rise to captain is a story of a local kid succeeding in his hometown.

“It means a lot,” he said. “I was born and raised in Belleville. I went through the school system. I graduated in 1998 to come back to my hometown and have served in the police department. To rise to the rank of captain — sometimes I can’t believe that it’s actually happening, that I actually did it.”

Pignataro, who joined the Belleville Police Department in 2008, is the commander of the traffic and community policing unit. In his position, he has many opportunities to meet residents. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, he was also involved in outreach to Belleville’s schools.

“It’s just great to give back to a community that gave so much to me,” he said.

“I am very proud of all three officers who were promoted,” Minichini said.

“They have a passion for serving and they truly exemplify what we are looking for in police in Belleville.”

Greenway expected to help with overflow problem The Essex–Hudson Greenway project partners presented to the Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions on April 26 about the project’s usefulness in solving infrastructure challenges for the region regarding sewage overflow.

According to a press release from the greenway partners, the proposed Essex–Hudson Greenway project will help solve severe stormwater overflow issues that have long plagued communities in the greenway corridor.

According to advocates for the greenway and the Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions, the project will help solve the dire infrastructure challenges that result in raw sewage infiltrating local streets and contaminating area homes and waterways.

The proposed Essex–Hudson Greenway project would create nearly 9 miles of linear park connecting Montclair, Glen Ridge, Bloomfield, Belleville, Newark, Kearny, Secaucus and Jersey City. In July 2020, the Open Space Institute reached a preliminary purchase and sale agreement with Norfolk Southern Railway Com-

pany for property in Essex and Hudson counties for the purpose of the greenway. The purchase agreement has a sale deadline of January 2022. For more than a year, OSI has been working with the New Jersey Bike and Walk Coalition and the September 11th National Memorial Trail Alliance to advocate for the creation of the greenway, working with local, county and state officials.

“The opportunity to introduce green infrastructure solutions into the greenway project is a game-changer for local communities,” ANJEC Executive Director Jennifer Coffey said, voicing her organization’s support for the Essex–Hudson Greenway project. “The combined health and safety benefits along with the savings to taxpayers are enormous.”

“The Essex–Hudson Greenway will not only directly improve the daily lives of people throughout our northern New Jersey communities, it also has the potential to make this region significantly ‘greener,’” Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill said. “With smart and creative planning, this project will serve as a national blueprint for inte-

grating recreational opportunities, green infrastructure, new transportation choices and expanded access to broadband in our suburban and urban neighborhoods. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we must get it done.”

“Much of the enthusiasm surrounding the proposed greenway is drawn from the potential for improved access to nature and expanded opportunities for recreation, but benefits such as greener options and the potential to integrate green infrastructure are critical to the long-term health of our residents and communities,” said Debra Kagan of the New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition.

Over the past decades, communities throughout New Jersey have had to deal with stormwater overflow events that occur when heavy rains overwhelm existing infrastructure systems, resulting in sewage backing up into streets, homes and area rivers. Throughout New Jersey, an average of 23 billion gallons of raw sewage are being released every year, resulting in growing public health concerns and steep fines for localities, according to the release.

Student actors pivot to film when staging musical (Continued from Page 1) like no other and because I was not even sure if a theatrical production would be possible given the circumstances, restrictions and limitations as a result of the pandemic, I knew I had to think out of the box.

I knew what I did not want, and that was to just try and cram our traditional show into a virtual platform. I didn’t want my students to feel that they got ‘less than’ a normal year; I wanted them to feel they instead got something unique. So the idea of doing a song cycle and filming it like a movie to stream to the public sounded like not only the safest and most feasible idea, it certainly was unique and new for us.”

Rather than performing the show live for each streaming, the student actors went through a rigorous filming process to create a movie. Like working on a traditional school play, the students did character research, had rehearsals and learned the music — sometimes together and sometimes on their own. Once they knew their parts inside and out, though, it was lights, camera, action!

“We filmed each student individually

— even if they are interacting with their castmates in the scene,” Lombardi said.

“We would rehearse together — but distanced — and then film each student solo on stage. This allowed for them to safely remove their mask and express the full range of emotions the scene demands. It was also very different for us to prepare for a filmed/recorded performance rather than a live stage performance. Rather than exaggerate our body language and facial expressions as you would for the stage, students could be more subtle, since the camera films them close up. We had the luxury of taking more risks, because we knew we could always refilm if certain choices didn’t work out the first time we tried them — some of these choices we wouldn’t necessarily make if we had to be sure we could replicate them night after night in front of an audience.

“And, of course, the biggest difference was all the new technology utilized to make all of this possible,” she continued.

“The lights, recording equipment, video editing software, sound mixing applications, camera, etc., were all new to us, and

All communities along the greenway are serviced by the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission, and existing infrastructure in the adjacent municipalities includes numerous combined sewer overflows, which allow for the discharge of raw sewage into the Passaic and Hackensack rivers dur-

ing heavy precipitation events. Including new stormwater management practices, with the installation of state-of-the-art “green infrastructure” in the construction of the greenway, can help to alleviate existing issues with combined sewer overflows.

In addition to addressing green infrastructure and transportation potentials, Kagan’s April 26 presentation focused on the environmental, social, economic and infrastructure benefits of a potential Essex–Hudson Greenway, as it is currently envisioned. The greenway has the opportunity to provide a resource for diverse communities that historically have not had access to public greenspace, while also providing off-road connectivity through some of the most populated communities in the region.

For actor Ryan Nguyen, the biggest adjustment for a virtual performance was becoming comfortable with having audio booth sessions for each song.

“Usually, when we perform, the audio and visuals are lined up since it is live.

With the new virtual format, in order to have the best audio, we recorded our vocals separately and created our own soundtrack,” Nguyen told the Belleville Post on May 16. “Listening to myself in the booth was uncomfortable at first, but as time went on I started looking forward to hearing my vocal part come to life. Along with this, the visual recording sessions were different as well. Instead of looking at my peers or getting into the moment, I had to constantly be aware of the position of the camera in front of me. Each person had to record one at a time, and it was initially daunting to stand in front of a camera all alone. Since there was no need to

fully perform the entire musical in one take since it wasn’t live, days like the sitzprobe — where the actors and musicians play through the music together — and dress rehearsals — days where we performed the entire show as practice — were taken out of the usual theater schedule.”

Despite the differences, Nguyen is having a great time, having moved from the role of percussionist to actor.

“Interests changed, some peer pressure was involved, and I decided to just take a leap of faith and join the cast instead — mind you, I had never sung or danced or acted ever in my life,” Nguyen said. “Right now, my favorite aspect now has to be practicing and performing alongside the friends that I have made.

There is something magical about being in the moment completely in sync with one another, bringing what we practiced for months to life on the stage.”

Thousands of PPE items donated to town employees A generous donation of personal protective equipment from a Belleville business owner will go a long way toward continuing to keep township personnel safe, according to a May 14 press release.

A shipment of 30 boxes of surgical masks and 72 boxes of hand sanitizer — 60,000 masks total and 1,440 16-ounce bottles — has been donated to Belleville workers by Richard Park, who owns a logistics shipping and storage business called Art Movement. The donation was so large that it took township employees a couple of hours to unload it from a truck.

Police Capt. Frank Pignataro said the supplies will be distributed among the police and fire departments, the department of public works, and other municipal workers. Some of it will also be made available to various personnel throughout Town Hall and in the municipal court.

The rest of the hand sanitizer and masks will be stored in the police department to replenish the other departments when supplies grow low.

Even though cases of COVID-19 continue to drop in Belleville and other parts of the state as supplies of the vaccine continue to become more readily available, Pignataro said many of Belleville’s employees will likely be using PPE for some time to come.

“This generous donation will certainly be used by our workers,” Pignataro said.

“Our police, fire and EMS personnel continue to respond to medical emergencies on a daily basis. There’s a very real chance that the people we encounter on these

and business owners since the pandemic began in New Jersey in March 2020 — have touched the hearts of Belleville’s municipal workers.

“How wonderful it is that Mr. Park and others have been so thoughtful and sought ways to take care of our police and fire

personnel and other first responders throughout the COVID-19 pandemic,” Mayor Michael Melham said. “We appreciate it, and I’m sure no one appreciates it more than our first responders. This will help keep them safe while they are working to keep us safe.”

PUTTING OUT FIRES — Fast work by Belleville Fire Department’s Battalion 3 at an early-morning house fire on May 20 saved the life of one occupant, who escaped injury. The fire was quickly extinguished before causing major structural damage.

An Essex County man with a previous felony conviction was arrested on May 12 for illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition, acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig announced on May 13.

Farrakhan Lovett, 24, Belleville, is charged by complaint with one count of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon. He made his initial appearance on May 13 by videoconference before U.S. Magistrate Judge Cathy L. Waldor and was detained.

According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court, agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives executed a search warrant on a vehicle that Lovett was observed driving in Belleville. They found a Taurus G3 9x19 mm firearm loaded with 18 rounds in a high-capacity magazine. Lovett was previously convicted of felonies in Essex County Superior Court.

The charge of being a felon in possession of a weapon and ammunition carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

Honig credited special agents of the ATF, Newark Field Division, under the direction of acting Special Agent in Charge Craig B. Kailimai, and the Belleville Police Department, under the direction of Chief Mark Minichini, with the investigation leading to the charges.

The charge and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proved guilty.

“It was definitely a challenge, because being in front of a camera was the total opposite of doing it live,” Asali said May 16. “There were times when I would tense up at the fact that the camera was recording me and I felt like I had to be perfect. It felt different to perform without a live audience and hearing them applaud after each scene.”

Senior Jiana Mojica, an actor in the play, was thrilled to push the boundaries of live theater with this production.

“My favorite aspect of being a part of these productions is always having something to do and something to work toward,” Mojica said May 15. “That way, no matter what goes on elsewhere, you can get on that stage for practice and forget all about it. Although this year’s production is very different from previous years, it is probably the most special piece I have been a part of. Regardless of the guidelines we have to follow in order to keep everyone safe and the changes we’ve had to make, we were still able to put on a production that the public can view from the safety of their home! It’s different, new and exciting, considering the challenges we all have faced during this pandemic.”

Actor Chandra David sees this show as a testament to her and her classmates’ hard work, dedication and theatrical skill.

“Putting this show together varies tremendously from anything we have done in the past years when we weren’t in a pandemic. The fact that we were able to persevere through this tough year and still put on an amazing performance says a lot,” David said May 14. “We are all so used to the traditional onstage performance in front of hundreds of family, friends and loved ones. When doing a play you get to interact with one another, help each other out with the process. If there’s a dance move you’re struggling with, you can pull someone to the side and ask them to show you how it’s done. We couldn’t have much of that this year. Even though it was tough, I do believe that this year has been extremely beneficial. We had to work twice as hard, and I truly believe that it has completely paid off in the end.”

Despite various struggles, the students expressed feeling connected to their characters and their fellow actors.

“Although I play many roles in ‘Songs for a New World,’ the role that I particularly relate to is my character in ‘I'm Not Afraid of Anything,’ because she is overcome by this feeling of excitement and hope, but is brought down by her fear of failure,” actor Rachel Cabrera, who is also vice president of the theater club, said May 13.

While Cabrera enjoys her characters on the stage, nothing can compare to the character of her fellow actors.

“My favorite aspect of this club is the genuine hospitality that my peers and I have for one another,” she said. “I have been doing theater for around five years

In order to put together this year’s show, the students had to learn film techniques and record their audio in a sound booth. Though this was a new challenge, the Belleville teens were more than up for it, and have now completed their staging of ‘Songs for a New World,’ which will be broadcast the first weekend in June. now, and I have come across a lot of individuals with diva attitudes, looking to outshine their castmates and put them down.

But our club puts pride in making a comfortable environment for everyone who joins, and through these efforts we have truly created a family who looks out for each other, which is so important, especially right now. I believe that our love for one another truly reflects in how our show turned out.”

Club President Dev B. Choksi pointed out that there is much more to do in theater than just act onstage. Choksi is the show’s stage manager.

“In the past years, being a part of Stage Tech, I was in charge of lights. I would have cues turn on/off, change colors, direction, etc., of different lights. However, this year, I volunteered to record videos of each performance and help set the scene,” Choksi said May 13. “My sophomore year I had a misconception that I could not participate in the play because I didn’t know how to sing or dance, so I ended up joining Stage Tech. However, I soon fell in love with the job and responsibilities I was given. Stage Tech is not just a part of the Theatre Arts Company; instead, it is an entirely different club that is active in other school events, such as the Mr. and Miss Belleville Pageant and the Belleville’s Got Talent show. In addition, I can be a part of the cast while also being in Stage Tech — I even have a cameo in the opening song this year!

“I would like to add that the play does not require anyone to be a singer or a dancer, however; instead, what is

required is dedication and willingness to perform,” Choksi continued. “There are plenty of new people every year who have never been a part of a theatrical production; however, Miss Lombardi and other teachers do such an incredible job teaching everyone about singing, dancing, set design or stage technology. In fact, this experience did land me a fairly high-paying job my junior year, since the professional light manager that Belleville High School hires was impressed by my work.”

Asali took up the challenge of student director because she enjoys pushing herself to earn new skills and learn the various roles needed to make a stage production a success.

“Student director entails bringing new or different ideas to the table and helping the director with a certain scene. Student directors also make sure that whoever is in the scene knows that they are there to help them,” Asali said. “What drew me to this position was that because I love theater so much; I love the different aspects of just directing a scene (more) than being in it. Since the show was different this year, I definitely made sure to experience the position of being a student director.”

For the students putting on this show, trying new things and adjusting to changes is not only part of theater, but part of life.

“I play the main character in the song ‘The World Was Dancing,’ and I act as a privileged undergraduate college student.

In my song, I am sort of lost with what I want in life, and I ultimately do actions that hurt the ones that love me,” Nguyen

said. “While I do not connect with the aspect about being unfaithful to my lover, I understand the feeling of just drifting by and acting on emotion. I am about to attend college this fall as a freshman, and the idea of going into a new world is definitely intimidating and daunting. There is an urge to just let the world carry me to wherever and just focus on the pleasures in life. However, as nice as following the footsteps of this character sounds, I know that I want to do everything in my power to reach my goals, even if it means going against the current and making sacrifices.”

David also learned lessons from the show, specifically from the vignette “Steam Train.”

“It is about a young man who was willing and wanted more than the situations and environment that he was born into.

Even though what he had as a child was bleak, he was determined to make something of himself,” David said. “The young man shows that you’re sometimes born into dark worlds that you seem stuck in, but there’s always a way to step out of it, and it starts with your attitude. You can be in the worst place ever, but your mindset and changing the world that you’re in starts with you and your outlook on life.”

It is these lessons and more that Lombardi hopes the audience takes away from “Songs for a New World.”

“First, I hope they take away how incredible the students of Belleville are.

Remembering a Hero For Memorial Day, I’d like to remember my dad, Corporal John X. Bezerra of the U.S. Army. He was chosen to be Grand Marshall for Nutley’s Memorial Day parade in 2020. Unfortunately, my dad passed away this March from Covid pneumonia. Shortly after he passed, I had the sad task of settling some bank issues for my mom and I needed to show this man at the bank my dad’s death certificate. When he saw my father’s name “John Xerfan Bezerra,” he stared at the paper and then tears came to his eyes as he realized that his customer, his friend, had passed. This man’s reaction was a testament to my father’s presence as a person. I knew it existed, but I had no idea how many people he actually affected.

My father John, or “JX”, was a great man for so many reasons. He came from Brazil in 1969 and immediately enlisted in the Army and served 2 consecutive tours in Vietnam. He worked on the Pennsylvania Railroad for over 30 years. And after retiring, he continued public service by helping his fellow veterans through various military organizations including the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He believed in helping as many veterans as possible. And he believed in bringing those veterans and the community together by helping make his home town of Belleville, a Purple Heart city.

He was a dedicated husband to my mother for almost 50 years. He did so much for me, my siblings and our children, his beloved grandchildren. He has done so much for his family, friends and country. If you met him, you instantly made a friend. And that’s what he was: a friend for life. And if he loved you, then you were truly blessed.

Thank you dad for your service to this nation, this community and for being a hero and the best friend and father anyone could ask for. You are truly loved and missed everyday.

— but to what could be and was accomplished during this time. Students put in such hard work, learned new skills, stepped out of their comfort zones, and excelled learning very difficult material during a challenging time. This year was absolutely not a loss in any respect. We in fact gained a great deal,” Lombardi said.

“Artistically, I hope that the themes of the show bring people comfort. While yes, what we’ve been through this year is unprecedented in our lifetimes, sudden change, difficult dilemmas and unfortunate circumstances befall us all consistent-

ly throughout our lives. It’s how we deal with those moments that makes our lives what they are. And if through music and storytelling, we can all cling to that hope that ‘we’ll be fine’ — as the last lyrics of the show state — that is a beautiful thing.”

Choksi reflected on how apropos “Songs for a New World” is now, as we have begun to see the light at the end of the tunnel of the COVID-19 pandemic. “‘Songs for a New World’ is about a fresh new world, as the title suggests, and I think it is super fitting for today,” Choksi said. “The CDC just updated their guidelines announcing that fully vaccinated people will not be required to wear masks in public settings and gatherings.

Although it seems like America will be returning to old times, the reality will be more of a brand new world. And I think the overall message of the musical is super inspiring and uplifting, which I think everyone needs nowadays.”

Mojica sees the show as an optimistic missive to the audience.

“The message I hope the audience will capture from ‘Songs for a New World’ is that, no matter what hardships you might be going through, that there is always a way,” Mojica said. “You can always find a way to be positive in any outcome, no matter the circumstance. I love the message this production sends out.”

The biggest message from the show,

though: Despite many obstacles, Belleville High School pulled it off, creating a show that is not only enjoyable, but deeply meaningful.

“Putting on any theatrical production is a huge, complex undertaking, and it is challenging each and every year. But honestly, this year, given all the setbacks, restrictions, inconsistencies and uncharted territory, it should have been darn near impossible to pull this off. But not only did the BHS students pull it off, they excelled. Under these most difficult of circumstances, they behaved with the utmost professionalism,” Lombardi said.

“A better bunch of students does not exist, I assure you.”

County commissioners hold meeting regarding feral cats On May 5, County Commissioner Tyshammie L. Cooper, who represents District 3 and is chairperson of the Essex County Commissioner Trap-Neuter-Return Committee, held a virtual meeting of the TNR Committee to address the overpopulation of feral cats in communities throughout Essex County. In attendance were District 5 Commissioner Vice President Carlos M. Pomares, District 1 Commissioner Robert Mercado, District 4 Commissioner Leonard M. Luciano, Essex County administrator Robert Jackson, and members of the public representing the American Humane Society, St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center, People for Animals and Communities Promoting Animal Welfare of New Jersey.

Items discussed during the meeting included an overview of Essex County’s TNR program, plans for the program going forward, and the role organizations and concerned citizens can play in addressing the feral cat issue. During the last two years, Essex County has increased the yearly financial allocations to the TNR program by 500 percent. Although funding has improved, the issues of loud, disease-carrying cats and traffic concerns arising from the overpopulation of feral cats are still prevalent — particularly in the communities of Belleville, Bloomfield, Newark, Orange and Irvington. Also discussed was the need for the organizations to provide metrics that show the effect of the TNR program. Quantifiable numbers that show a reduction in intake of cats at local shelters, or a reduction in complaints by residents about feral cats, will show that the TNR program is working, and

will also show where future resources from the county should be allocated, according to a press release.

Organizations such as the American Humane Society, which has partnered with Essex County for the last two years, and CPAW NJ, which has been giving virtual workshops to show prospective trappers techniques on the best way to trap cats and participate in the TNR process, have been working to improve the county’s TNR program. While the virtual workshops have been

successful, community outreach to raise awareness about overpopulation issues remains at the forefront of what must be done to correct this problem.

“The AHS, CPAW NJ, People for Animals and other organizations have stepped up to help us deal with the overpopulation of feral cats,” Cooper said. “Thank you for helping us put together a comprehensive, structured, realistic plan to address this problem and the issues it is causing in our communities.”

U.S News ranks New Jersey’s public high schools U.S. News & World Report recently released its 2021 rankings of public high schools. In addition to a national list, U.S. News compiled a ranking of New Jersey high schools, looking at 424 public high schools.

The rankings were established by measuring six ranking indicators: college readiness, college curriculum breadth, math and reading proficiency, math and reading performance, underserved stu-

dent performance, and graduation rate.

Bringing life to Nutley VFW property with plants It was another amazing day at the Nutley Veterans of Foreign Wars with help beautifying the property from the Rotary Club of Nutley and Nutley High School Interact Club student volunteers.

On May 16, with the help of the Rotary and volunteers, the VFW was able to bring new life to the recently renovated flagpole area by adding plants, plaques and flags, representing each military branch. Volunteers also worked on lawn thatching, flower planting, bricklaying and other lawn care, chipping away at a large mound of dirt.

“We couldn’t have accomplished all of

this without the dedication of the Rotary Club of Nutley and these amazing students,” Nutley VFW wrote in an online post. “We would like to personally thank all of our student volunteers: Ava, Guil, Isabel, Arista, Shayla, Ally, Maria, Hushnuda, Adrianna, Erin, Christian, Finlay, Kate and Madison. SAL welcomes its newest — and youngest — member Sons of the American Legion Squadron 105 welcomed its newest and youngest member on Tuesday, April 27: Cole Livingstone, who was less than 24 hours old at the time. Cole joins his brother, father and grandfather as members of the 105 American Legion family.

Cole, who was born Monday, April 26, is the grandson of SAL 105 Sgt.-at-Arms Jimmy Livingstone. Jimmy Livingstone has been an SAL member for 13 years, eligible through his father’s service. Cole’s father is a veteran member of American Legion Post 105, as well as SAL, as he is currently serving in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Cole joins his brother, James, as an SAL, honoring both their father and great-grandfather.

Jimmy Livingstone came to the post on April 27 to announce the birth of his new grandchild and immediately asked for an application for Cole, so Pop-Pop could sign him up.

Vincent Church events Vincent United Methodist Church, located at 100 Vincent Place in Nutley, has reopened for worship on Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. The service will also be broadcast live each week on the church’s Facebook page and be available by call-in. There will be a health screening for all in-person attendees each week. Inperson attendees must wear masks and adhere to social distancing guidelines.

Oregano: beauty, scent, taste and more I love oregano — on pizza, in cooked dishes, in salads and in my garden. In the past I have grown pots of common oregano, or Origanum vulgare subspecies hirtum, to provide myself with ample quantities to dry for winter cooking. This year I will do that once again. The flavor of homegrown dried oregano is much better than that of the desiccated contents of the little spice bottles stashed away in kitchens across North America and elsewhere.

My love affair with oregano broadened recently when I bought a single specimen of “Barbara Tingey,” a hybrid variety that is grown for its ornamental rather than culinary or medicinal qualities. This oregano, resulting from the cross-breeding of at least two species, is one of nature’s imposters, featuring showy arrays of bracts that look like hops. Growing only 6 to 12 inches tall, with a trailing habit, the bracts are pale green shading to pink. If this sounds like a preppy outfit in plant form, rest assured that the colors are soft and subtle. The bracts are not fly-bynight displays but last throughout the growing season. The plants also sprout soft, fuzzy true leaves with the characteristic oregano fragrance.

I suppose that you could dry those fuzzy leaves, but I think it is best to let them stay on the plant and invest in a lessflashy culinary oregano variety to supply your pantry.

The craze for ornamental oreganos with hoplike bracts began at least 20 years ago with “Kent Beauty,” the offspring of two species, Origanum rotundifolium, native to Turkey, Armenia and Georgia, and Origanum scabrum, known as “Greek oregano,” for its place of origin.

The original plant was a naturally occurring hybrid, found growing in a garden near plantings of both parent species.

“Kent Beauty” has whorled, hoplike bracts that some sources describe as pale green shading to mauve. This sounds romantic, but in my experience, the mauve is closer to pink. The discrepancy most likely results from differences in soil chemistry, sun exposure and, possibly, the color reproduction quality of available photographs.

One source describes my “Barbara Tingey” as a “half sister” of “Kent Beauty.”

Familial relationships in the plant world can be just as complicated as those in the human sphere, but the two varieties do share Origanum rotundifolium parentage.

“Barbara” has the same low-growing, sprawling or cascading habit as “Kent Beauty,” and the colorful bracts appear to have a brighter pink color. In cold winter climates, both varieties should be treated as annuals. In warm winter climates,

“Kent Beauty” is evergreen, while “Barbara Tingey” will die back in winter and rise again in spring.

The realm of ornamental oregano with showy bracts is not large — yet — but includes “Amethyst Falls,” with pale green bracts that end in small purple flowers.

Specialty nurseries also carry “Pilgrim,” which features small pink flowers surrounded by purple bracts and blue-green leaves. A little more erect than the other ornamental oreganos, “Pilgrim” grows to about 12 inches tall.

As Mediterranean plants, the oreganos share a need for copious sunshine and well-drained soil. When “Barbara Tingey” leaves its small starter pot, I will add some sand to the potting mix to make sure things don’t get too soggy. The flip side of the good drainage coin is the ability to withstand some amount of drought. One caveat for container gardeners: Container-grown plants dry out much faster than those planted in garden beds, so watering has to be more consistent.

Ornamental oreganos love rock garden settings, where they can sprawl among the rocks, basking in the sun and retained heat. Hanging baskets and window boxes are also options, as long as the sites are sunny. Tall containers that allow the bracts to cascade over the sides are also excellent for these aromatic plants.

Though “Barbara Tingey” and its ornamental relatives don’t resemble mints,

they are members of the very large mint, or Lamiaceae, family. “Kent Beauty” has inherited the minty trait of spreading by underground runners, while “Barbara Tingey” has not. If you are treating the plants as annuals, you don’t have to worry about excessive sprawl. Likewise if you live in a warm winter climate and have space to fill.

If my “Barbara Tingey” plant takes off, I will also cut some of the bracts and dry them for winter arrangements. They retain color well and will keep me in step with the fashion-forward decorators and flower arrangers who are completely infatuated with dried flowers right now.

Deer, connoisseurs of plant tastiness, if not plant beauty, tend to avoid oregano, as they do other mints. I may position my pot of “Barbara Tingey” near a rosebush as part of my unending campaign to confuse Mr. Antlers and his harem.

Clara Maass receives grant for in-house MRI suite Clara Maass Medical Center, a facility of RWJBarnabas Health, opened a new MRI suite to better meet the needs of the communities it serves with a $534,000 grant received from the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey, according to a May 14 press release. The funding comes with a challenge grant from the HFNJ of up to $250,000 to match, dollar for dollar, the money that CMMC raises. The donation will allow the hospital to enhance patient care at CMMC with an on-site MRI suite to assist in the diagnosis of a variety of medical pathologies.

“The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey’s generous donation will ensure that we have the necessary resources to

improve the health, well-being and quality of care for the communities we serve throughout northern New Jersey while working to reduce disparities in access to essential imaging services,” CMMC President and CEO Mary Ellen Clyne said.

“We are pleased and proud that this grant will enable Clara Maass Medical Center to improve the quality of care it provides to the people of this community,” said Marsha Atkind, executive director of the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey.

The new, state-of-the-art MRI suite is located on the first floor of the main hospital. The MRI suite includes a private patient changing room with lockers, two patient

bays, a scan room, an equipment room, a control room and a spacious area devoted to storage. The MRI suite is equipped with negative room pressure capabilities, further increasing patient safety. Negative room pressurization is an isolation technique used in hospitals and medical centers to prevent cross-contamination of airborne pathogens from room to room.

“The new MRI suite and its many advanced features certainly is a gamechanger for Clara Maass Medical Center, and we could not have brought life to this project without support from the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey,” said Celeste A. Oranchak, vice president of foundation and development at Clara Maass.

The MRI will allow for 24/7 diagnostic testing. In addition, the turnaround time for MRI exams and results will be reduced, improving the timeline for the creation of a patient’s plan of care, thereby providing more timely access to treatment.

$15.4M available in EC through Emergency Rental Assistance Program Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. announced that Essex County is now accepting applications for the 2021 Essex County Emergency Rental Assistance Program. There is $15.4 million available to be awarded. Renters and landlords who have been negatively affected during the coronavirus pandemic and need help to pay rent or utility bills can apply for funding. “The pandemic created financially challenging and difficult times for individuals and families who experienced a loss of income or loss of employment,” DiVin-

cenzo said. “Our Emergency Rental Assistance Program will help eligible residents and families catch up on their rent or utility arrears or pay their rent and/or utility bills prospectively. This ultimately will prevent individuals and families from getting evicted from their housing and becoming homeless.”

Those eligible to apply include individuals or families affected by COVID-19 through unemployment, decrease in household income or some other financial hardship.

Impact100 grant cycle now open Impact100 Essex announced the availability of a $100,000 Impact Grant and kicked off its 2021 grant cycle with an information session for Essex County nonprofits. At the April 20 session, more than 60 organizations from across the county attended to learn about the grant application process.

“We were pleased to see so many faces at our virtual information session — both familiar organizations and new ones too,” Grants Committee co-Chairperson Jill Edinburg said.

“We look forward to reviewing their proposals, reflecting the transformative work these organizations do every day on behalf of our underserved communities in Essex County.”

Letters of intent, the first step in the application process, are due Friday, May 28. Nonprofits are encouraged to apply with projects

that deepen or expand their mission, innovate with a new program, or address challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Information on how to apply can be found on Impact100 Essex’s website at www.impact100essex.org.

Impact100 Essex also recently announced the funding of a $30,000 equity grant for a nonprofit led by individuals who identify as black, indiginous or people of color. Details about the equity grant application process will be released soon.

“The racial justice movement and the systemic inequity in funding to nonprofits led by BIPOC individuals are demanding our attention. As a collective, we are taking this first step in response,” Grants Committee co-Chairperson Renee Reso said.

Information requested of the applicants will include identification for the head of household, income information for all those in the household who are older than 18, a copy of the lease, information about the landlord, and information about the rent and utility payments that are unpaid. Residents of Section 8 or public housing may be eligible to receive assistance for costs not covered by federal assistance and for the tenant’s portion of the rent or utility bills.

The 2021 Essex County Emergency Rental Assistance Program is being funded by the U.S. Department of Treasury as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021.

Jensen Kraft, of Nutley, has signed a national letter of intent accepting a volleyball scholarship to Davis & Elkins College, located in Elkins, W.Va. Jensen, who attended St. Mary High School in Rutherford, won 12 varsity letters as a member of the volleyball, track and field, basketball, and softball teams.

Kraft won multiple all-league awards in

volleyball, basketball and softball, switching to track her senior year and finishing in the top 10 for the mile and half-mile at the NJSIAA Group Championships. The outside hitter is excited to play for the W.Va. school that made it to the Mountain East Conference semifinal round this year under new head coach Jordan Willis.

At the April Board of Education meeting, the board voted to appoint JD Vick as head varsity football coach at Nutley High School. Vick has been with the program since 2004 and served as interim head football coach in 2019, when coach Steve DiGregorio was on medical leave.

“It’s an honor to be named head coach of the Nutley High School football team,” Vick said. “This is a special place. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to coach our young men. Coach D. left some big shoes to fill.”

Vick arrived in Nutley in 2004 from Tuscaloosa, Ala., where he was the head football coach of the Tuscaloosa Christian School. While at TCS, Vick accumulated 94 wins for their program and three state championships. Vick also served as the school’s athletic director for several years.

Vick will take over the reins for the 2021 season and is already planning.

“Our ultimate desire is for our kids to become mature adults and keep our community thriving as spouses and parents,” Vick said. “It is about the process more than the results. As coaches, we’ll be around these kids every day, for six months, between training in the summer and the actual season. You can’t fool a kid.

They’re sharp, and they know quickly if a coach is here to make them better people, in addition to being better football players.”

NHS Athletic Director Joe Piro called Vick “an exciting hire.”

“Coach Vick has been a part of this program for over 15 years,” Piro said. “He has put in the work and has shown our team, our staff and our community that he is ready to lead this program.”

“Coach Vick has been a pillar and a role model promoting community service throughout Nutley,” Superintendent of Schools Julie Glazer said. “He is committed to the growth and advancement of our young men and women, and the board and administration are confident Coach Vick will continue to create a positive and meaningful environment in our classrooms, in our community and on the football field.”

At the April BOE meeting, board President Charles Kucinski said, “Beyond his extensive football experience and knowledge, Coach Vick has developed strong roots in the community.”

Vick is a history and special education teacher at the high school, as well as the adviser of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Patriot Club. He also is an assistant baseball and basketball coach at Nutley High School.

Neck-and-neck games end with Belleville defeat In a hard-fought match, the Bloomfield High School boys volleyball team beat Belleville High School 2-1 on April 27. The first game of the match was neck and neck, as the two teams traded points, resulting in a final score of 37-35 to Bloomfield. Bloomfield lost the second game narrowly, with the Buccaneers winning 25-23. And the Bengals won the third game of the match 25-17.

For the Bucs, Justin Lo led the way with eight kills, 15 digs, 10 service points and three aces. James Dabajo brought the team 8 service points and one ace, while Jonriz Palmares had three kills, 15 digs and 4 service points. Additionally, Eric Galraga had one kill, one block, two digs and 1 service point; Jerome Vallido had

four kills, two blocks and two digs; Amadeus Perado had six digs, 4 service points and one ace; Richard Pezantez had three kills, five blocks, two digs, 16 assists and 4 service points; and Alfonso Cajigas has one block, six digs and 1 service point.

For the Bengals, Christopher Moreno put in 27 assists and two digs, while Wahid Gaida had five kills, one dig and five aces; Randall Villarroel had two kills; Jahleel Murphy had eight kills and two blocks; Esaias Edwards had nine kills, six digs and three aces; Ellis Gomez-McPherson had one kill; Josh Orejola had six kills, two blocks, eight digs and two aces; Luis Luque had one kill, seven digs and one ace; and Joseph Micciche had two digs and one ace.
