e have had a wonderful warm spring and with it the opportunity to get outside and compete, and whilst we still have some indoor reports in this issue, it is great to see so many pictures taken in glorious sunshine. Gatehouse HS1 Jockey Skull Gatehouse is reassuring customers that its HS1 Jockey Skull is suitable for use under equestrian sports rules beyond the end of the year. Helen Riley, Technical & Safety Manager for the brand, said: “Since the withdrawal of the European standard, EN1384, there has been some confusion concerning the HS1, which is tested to the American Snell E2001 standard. We can confirm that the various equestrian sports bodies are accepting Snell helmets for those riding under rules in 2016. The helmet also carries the CE Mark required to market and sell safety wear in the UK and Europe. The Snell label can be located under the padding inside the helmet.” Snell E2001 is the most demanding helmet standard currently in manufacture for equestrians and includes a test that simulates a rider falling into a fence rail or having a secondary hit by a horse’s hoof. Carbon fibre reinforcement on the lower edge of the HS1 helps strengthen and balance the helmet. The Gatehouse HS1 is worn by many of the world’s leading equestrians and, as well as the familiar black and silver options, the helmet is now also available in a Special Edition gloss blue or gloss black finish and comes with an AEGIS Microbe Shield® antibacterial lining. www.wefi.co.uk

Tribute Fund in Memory of your Horse at some point in our lives we will all experience the sadness of losing someone dear to us and that feeling may be exacerbated if we are unable to visit a grave or memorial site because it is a long way from home. Whether a member of the family, a friend, pet or indeed a horse who has brought years of happiness, creating a Tribute Fund in aid of World Horse Welfare is a positive way of keeping the memory of a loved one alive and during such a distressing time may also bring much-needed comfort. Uniquely these funds can be easily shared with friends and family all over the world. all of the money added to a Tribute Fund goes directly to the charity to help the important work they do worldwide to help vulnerable horses. World Horse Welfare’s international programme helps working horses and their owners in ten countries in Latin america, africa and asia, whilst their UK work reaches neglected and abused horses in desperate need of our expertise and care. Our Chief Executive Roly Owers recounts the poignant story of a woman in Wigan whose dying wish was to say goodbye to her favourite horse as she succumbed to cancer – a request touchingly fulfilled by the hospital: “The value of horses in this situation transcends money, utility and sentiment – they are closely intertwined with our survival and in many ways, our souls. With this in mind a Tribute Fund that can bring hope to a once neglected, abused or over-worked horse whilst remembering a loved one is a wonderful mark of respect that makes a lasting difference.”

Benefits of the Tribute Page include:

Based in East Sussex, Ian Bassett hand builds working hunter jumps and fillers. He offers sets of jumps, individual wings and fillers, as well as crafting jumps to customer’s orders.

Personalise your page: memories can fade over time but you can add photographs, anecdotes and commemorations to your page as regularly as you wish, which may help the grieving process as you record all of those special moments to look back on for years to come. Share your page: you can make sure everyone who was touched by the passing of your loved-one can be involved in creating a beautiful Tribute Fund by sharing it via e-mail or through social media. mark special days: whether a birthday, anniversary or the moment you first met you can mark a special day by making a regular contribution to the fund on that day, reassured in the knowledge that vulnerable horses will benefit.

SEIB Insurance Brokers are delighted to announce their sponsorship and support of para dressage rider, Bert Sheffield. Bert Sheffield Bert is the current British Dressage Para National Champion at Grade 3 and came fourth at the World Equestrian Games in Normandy in 2014. Bert suffers from Rheumatoid Arthritis which affects all her limb joints and her neck, shoulders and jaw. This painful condition was discovered when she was 15 and has progressed through her body, making life awkward, but Bert is a very determined young lady and her heart is set on dressage success.

“Riding gives me freedom from my condition and has given me the opportunity to compete in top level para competition”, says Bert. With the aid of straps on the stirrups to give her legs more stability, and bobbles on the reins to help her grip, Bert is able to ride and train her horses normally. Bert’s top horse is the stunning eight-year-old chestnut mare, Double Agent, known as Darcy. Unable to afford the astronomical prices of a top dressage horse, Bert bought her as a two-year-old and has done all the training of this exciting young horse herself. In fact Bert does most of the work herself, assisted by her mother, Francis, and when she needs a groom to travel abroad, she offers the position to a very capable student from the local college. Bert is keen on natural horsemanship and usually has a daily “play” session with the horses as well as their normal schooling. “We are delighted to be able to support Bert. With her attitude and determination combined with her bubbly personality, she is such a great ambassador for the sport and a very good person to work with,” said SEIB Marketing Manager, Nicolina MacKenzie.

The Original Rug Bag Elastic Grackle Noseband The Kate Negus Elastic Grackle combines English leather with special elastic selected by the company and sheepskin padding at the point that the elastic straps cross on the nose, for comfort. This noseband has been designed in collaboration with Kitty King, who uses an Elastic Grackle. “We’re excited to be able to add this new noseband to our range,” says Julia Andrews, Managing Director of Kate Negus Saddlery. “Due to how we operate, we’re able to make more specialised products as our customers need them, with a lead time of just three weeks, so it gives us plenty of scope to offer more unusual pieces of tack. The Elastic Grackle that we’ve created comes in two styles to allow it to be used with a regular headpiece or with our Grand Prix version (which features integral noseband hangers), to give even more flexibility. We’ve known Kitty for years and have enjoyed working with her on this item. As a rider who uses the product, her feedback has been invaluable and helped us to create something really special.” “The Elastic Grackle is perfect for horses that need the action of a grackle, but don’t like the restriction of a leather noseband,” says Kitty. “I find it a really useful piece of tack.” Tel: 0780 115 0571 or visit www.katenegus.com

Janette Perrett of the Original Rug Bag Company said: “I had wanted a Rug Bag to protect my rugs for years ever since I bought my first rug rail in 2003. In 2011 I decided to make my own and a friend who makes curtains helped me make my first Rug Bag. I made many design changes and lots of mistakes before I got it right and I rigorously tested it in my own stables and tack room for over a year to make sure it does what it’s designed to do. We are a new online family business based in East Hertfordshire. We are horse owners and are passionate about our horses and horse welfare. Horses are tough on their rugs and they can be very expensive to replace, so we feel it’s really important to take the best care of them. Keeping horse rugs neat and clean has always been a challenge, but not anymore as we now have The Original Rug Bag. We have designed the Rug Bag to fit around your rugs whilst hanging on a rug rail, it also cleverly doubles as a Travel Bag making transporting your rugs easy and compact. Protecting your rugs from dust, dirt, water and creepy crawlies, it also makes your tack room look neat and tidy.” For more information call 01920 438306 or visit www.theoriginalrugbagcompany.co.uk

Finding your dream equestrian property

A

t some point in time most horse owners will consider buying a house with stables or even a larger equestrian property. For some the benefits of keeping their horses at livery may outweigh the desire to keep them at home, but for many the quest to find the perfect equestrian property may have only just begun. Here we share some points to consider during your search, plus feature three properties, all of which are being marketed by the BTF Partnership, which offer the opportunity to develop your own equestrian haven. There are an increasing number of small farms coming onto the market in the South East. They have previously been run as small farms and small holdings and whilst some already have stables, most offer plenty of scope for development, enabling you to build your perfect yard and equestrian home.

Points to consider ◆ Consider the use of existing outbuildings as whilst they might provide luxury accommodation for your horses, there may also be a more profitable use such as the conversion to an annex or holiday let. This could provide you with additional income from horse/rider B & B or holiday opportunities. Consider taking advice on alternative uses before you begin any works, especially on what planning permission might be required. ◆ If you have extra grassland surplus to your needs, you could consider an arrangement with a local farmer to allow grazing for other animals or for hay or silage making. ◆ Having your own land means you could create your own off-road riding tracks or even a cross country course, which could be hired out to others to use. ◆ Creating extra stables for livery use is a good way of creating extra income.

Summer Hill Farm (see below)

◆ You will pay less per acre for lower quality land, Grade III pasture for example, but such land can often be improved with correct management and better drainage.

Summer Hill Farm, Nr. Biddenden, Kent

T

his is a residential farm with two dwellings and equestrian potential for sale at Fosten Green, near Biddenden in Kent. Summerhill Oast Farm includes a three double bedroom converted Oast House that is believed to be over 100 years old and a second dwelling known as Westerly, which is a single storey Scandia hus with four bedrooms. The farm extends to about 35 acres which is mainly pasture, divided into reasonably sized paddocks with an area of woodland extending to about 7.43 acres on the eastern boundary. The land is registered with the Rural Payments Agency and the Basic Payment will be claimed in 2015. There is also a useful collection of modern farm buildings grouped around a hard concrete yard. These comprise a four bay concrete frame building 60’x45’ with double sliding doors and B1 planning consent, a 60’x20’ stable and workshop building with four loose boxes and the remaining area providing garaging and storage and a 40’x15’ hay barn. Richard Thomas at BTF commented: “Summerhill Oast Farm is situated in a quiet rural location, mid-way between Tenterden and Cranbrook on the edge of Hempsted Forest. This is a very interesting property as it offers potential to run a business and to let out the second property or for multi-generational living. The farm is within the Cranbrook School Catchment Area as an added bonus.”

Guide price £1,375,000 Viewing is by appointment only. Full details can be found at www.btfpartnership.co.uk or call 01233 740077 or email rural@btfpartnership.co.uk

Chain Dene Farm, Marden, Kent Chain Dene Farm, in Marden, Kent is offered for sale as a whole or in two lots. This residential grassland farm in the Weald of Kent on the rural outskirts of the popular village of Marden, has four bedrooms and 45 acres. Lot 1 Chain Dene Farm consists of a farmhouse in the style of a Kentish Barn conversion, which is presented in immaculate order throughout. Downstairs there are two reception rooms, study and a large kitchen / dining room. Upstairs there are four bedrooms including a master ensuite. The property is heated and hot water supplied via an air source heat pump, which provides the benefit of low running costs. Outside the farmhouse is situated in six acres of garden with a fine range of outbuildings with potential, subject to planning permission for conversion to holiday lets or other income earning uses Lot 2 Consists of nearly 40 acres of Grade III pasture land, which has been in grass production for a number of years with hay and silage cut in the summer months, but it has grown cereal crops in the past. Basic Payment entitlements are included in the sale. Richard Thomas at BTF Partnership said: “This farm provides a fantastic opportunity for someone looking for a property with equestrian and other potential. The range of outbuildings have potential and two of them are the subject of an application for a change of use to holiday lettings. The surrounding land is most attractive and the bulk of the land is already used for grass crops.” The village of Marden has its own railway station with regular trains to central London.

Guide price: Lot 1 £1,195.000, Lot 2 £300,000 Viewing is strictly by appointment only and anyone interested should contact BTF Partnership’s Challock office on 01233 740077.

Horeham Flat Farm, Nr. Heathfield, East Sussex Horeham Flat Farm is a residential grassland farm with a farmhouse, 35 acres and a range of outbuildings, Nr Heathfield in East Sussex, which is on the market for the first time in 80 years. Horeham Flat Farm is located between the villages of Horam and Chiddingly and consists of a farmhouse, originally built in the 1930’s, that has been extended over time to create a four bedroom property. Happy families

FEATURE The Loose Ring enhances feel and communication through the rein.

Words by Lucy Nicholas of The Saddlery Shop

I am a firm believer in the concept of ‘bitting families’ - e.g. finding a bit that your horse is comfortable and confident in, and then finding similar bits for your various riding disciplines that have similar concepts; whether the ‘family’ is the mouthpiece, selected to suit mouth conformation and desired mouth pressure and action, or cheek pieces, which help the rider communicate their requirements to the horse. This ethos is particularly relevant for eventers, who often like different bits for each discipline. Here, we take an ‘average’ horse owner doing affiliated eventing, and suggest some bits that may suit the pairing, based on our most popular bits and the enquiries we receive via the advice@thesaddleryshop.co.uk email address for bitting assistance.

Cross Country

The Three Ring Continental Waterford Snaffle is a popular bit for cross country riding. Essentially, the Waterford has a mouthpiece made of a chain of rounded links. (In addition The Three Ring Continental Waterford to the Three Ring version, other Snaffle is useful for cross country. types are available, including D-Ring and full cheek). The Three Ring Continental Waterford Snaffle is useful for cross country, as it offers a good level of control. The mouthpiece of the Waterford Snaffle lays across the horse’s tongue, creating an even pressure. It encourages the horse to mouth the bit and salivate. Because the mouthpiece of the Waterford becomes uncomfortable when a horse pulls, the animal will not usually lean on it or take a strong hold. It is therefore a good bit, providing the rider has sympathetic hands. The rider should never ‘see saw’ the hands when using a Waterford bit, as it can make the bit very severe. The Waterford is normally selected one size larger than the horse’s usual bit size, to allow freedom and correct fit of the bit in the horse’s mouth. Continental bits work by raising the bit up in the horse’s mouth, in a similar manner to a conventional gag, but there is a limit to the extent this can happen with the Three Ring Continental, thus lessening the bit’s severity. The bit rings of the Three Ring Continental involve a series of steel rings; there is a main snaffle ring, plus a smaller ring above and below. Often, this bit is seen being used with just one rein on the lower ring, but ideally if only one rein is to be used, the bit should be used with roundings on the upper and lower rings, to maintain a better contact with the horse’s mouth. This bit exerts poll pressure, and has a limited gag action.

the Hanging Cheek version applies a little poll pressure when the rein aid is applied; the Fulmer Cheek also applies little bit of poll pressure when the rein aid is applied, and additionally prevents the bit from being dragged through the mouth; while the Eggbutt version features a fixed cheek that prevents the lips from being pinched, and lessens the vibrations felt by the horse’s mouth from the rider’s hands.

Show Jumping

A sort of ‘hybrid’ combination of the above two bits is the Three Ring Continental French Link. It features the three cheekpiece rings, with a French Link mouthpiece. Three Ring Continental French Link The mouthpiece softens the eliminates the nutcracker action. action of a single jointed bit by eliminating the nutcracker action, while the mouthpiece rings raise the bit up in the horse’s mouth. Again, if only one rein is to be used, the bit should really be used with roundings, to maintain a better contact. Dental checks by an equine dental technician or vet are recommended at least once a year, to ensure the horse is comfortable, and to avoid longer-term mouthing and bitting problems. Visit www.thesaddleryshop.co.uk for details of bit hire or purchase. Email advice@thesaddleryshop.co.uk

Dressage

The French Link Snaffle is a popular bit that many horses are often comfortable with, as the lack of palate pressure makes it comfortable, and relieves pressure on the horse’s bars (within the mouth). The French Link snaffle is a very kind bit, as the central plate is shaped, and lies flat on the tongue, passively. There are various cheek pieces to choose from: the Loose Ring enhances feel and communication through the The lack of palate pressure with the reins, between horse and rider; French link makes it comfortable. FEATURE In dressage, hats or covers are dark coloured, while short jackets are usually black or navy.

Dressage attire explained

Words by Stephen Biddlecombe

In our April column, we looked at tack suitable for eventing, including helmets, medical armbands, nosebands, martingales, breastplates and stud girths. Here, we showcase some commonly seen items and garments for riders competing in dressage… Helmets

Hats or covers in dressage are dark coloured, e.g. black, brown or blue. Throughout 2015 and 2016, British Dressage has announced that competitors can ride in hats with these standards: BSEN1384 KM, PAS 015, SNELL E2001, SEI ASTM F1163 2004, and AS/NZS 3838. (In Advanced to Grand Prix classes, Top Hats or Uniform caps are also permitted). In 2017, the recently withdrawn standard of BSEN1384 will NOT be permitted.

Boots

In dressage, tall boots, usually black, are favoured. Matching leather gaiters, cut in traditional riding boot style, may be worn with short boots. Boot decoration is usually minimal.

Clothing

Light-coloured, plain breeches or jodhpurs are worn; usually white or cream. If tail coats are chosen, they are traditionally ‘conservative’ or dark coloured, e.g. navy or black. Short jackets are also usually black or navy, and all jackets are worn with a light coloured shirt and stock. Competitors may be permitted to ride without jackets in extreme heat or humidity, and light-coloured gloves of a conservative hue are worn.

sheepskin. Unusually you can have this product in any colour, from a wide range, including dark hues. Look for a high-spec product for your dressage events, as pure sheepskin fleece is smart and also has therapeutic properties - when combined with a cotton quilt backing you have a comfortable, shock absorbing product. If you like a product with gel inserts, the Gel-Eze Dressage Saddle Square has additional comfort cushions at the shoulder, under the point of the saddle tree, and either side of the spine.

General appearance

Regarding plaiting, there are no rules to say you Tail coats must plait your horse in dressage contests, but most are always people do. At the very least, your horse must be clean conservative and presentable - there are many grooming products in colour. that give quick clean-ups, such as Cowboy Magic Green Spot Remover, a ‘shower in a bottle’! It removes manure and urine spots instantly and breaks down foreign molecules to dissolve dirt. Worldwide Tack offers a wide range: www.worldwidetack.com

Bits

There is a multitude of rules concerning bitting in dressage, obviously to ensure that the rider Check that your bit is dressage ‘legal’. There are many modern bits suitable like the Bombers doesn’t gain advantage BC45 Loose Ring, with its control plate. through attaining a seemingly harmonious picture through a bit that encourages a certain head carriage. I love the Bombers Bits range, which features blue sweet iron metal that oxidises easily and encourages salivation and helps bit acceptance. I would suggest the following bits for dressage enthusiasts: The BC45 Loose ring and Full Cheek. With a control plate set at 45° to follow the contour of the horse’s tongue, these are both ideal for horses that use their tongue to push against the bit, and gain control. The Buster Roller Loose Ring and Full Cheek feature a short, 40mm middle link that increases bar and tongue pressure - these are best suited to horses with a low head carriage that lean on the bit. Bombers Snaffle in Loose Ring and Full Cheek has a curved mouthpiece that distributes pressure more evenly over tongue and bars to reduce both nutcracker action and pressure points on the tongue. Elliptical snaffle in Loose Ring and Full Cheek. When the rein is used, this mouthpiece of these bits wrap across the tongue, creating tongue pressure and reducing bar pressure.

Saddle pads and numnahs

To fit in with an understated, conservative look, dressage saddle pads are usually light coloured or discreet. I like from the Stephens Sheepskin range the Dressage Saddle Square, which has rolled front and back edges, and is half lined with

The growth in the UK has been spear-headed by the UK Sales Manager, Matthew Tarrant, who was first introduced to the saddles, when his wife, event rider, Kate Tarrant was one of the first riders the company sponsored in the UK. Matthew has been instrumental in negotiating sponsorship contracts with Oliver Townend, Louise Harwood, Nicky Roncoroni, Constantin van Rijckevorsel, all of whom now choose to ride in the saddles. Other sponsored riders include Liz Halliday, Camilla Kruger, Sam Penn and Cordelia Croft.

Try before you buy

Finding that elusive extra half mark is important, whatever level of competition you ride at, and the feedback from those who have tried and bought Voltaire saddles is they are designed to benefit the performance of both the horse and rider. The company’s mission statement is “to help everyone fulfil their potential” and in order to do this, they have taken the best bits of existing saddles and improved them with their own knowledge and experience, gained through many years of saddle making and fitting. Sports Saddle Specialist, Sabine Colnot joined the company at the beginning of February and has since been on the road meeting riders, fitting saddles and also running the Voltaire trade stand at events including, Munstead, Burnham Market, South of England and Belton Horse Trials. Sabine will be at both Hickstead Meetings as well as Blenheim Horse Trials. She says as soon as someone sits in a Voltaire saddle, they notice the difference. They produce saddles for show jumping, cross country and dressage as well as a pony sized saddle.

will combine performance with French design. Each saddle is sent to its new owner, with a message printed on the underside of the saddle: Handmade in France with love and passion. To find out more about the Voltaire range of saddles call Sabine on 07717 507560.

Junior Programme

The company runs a very innovative programme for young riders, whereby if they buy a saddle for full price, they can renew that saddle for just £500 per time, until they reach the age of 18. This is a great relief to parents of children who are still likely to grow and also to change horses during that period. If you meet Sabine at a show, have a chat with her and make sure you try the different saddles in the Voltaire range, as well as asking to see the samples of leather the saddles can be made in.

Free initial trial

If you are interested in trying a Voltaire saddle, Sabine will come to your yard and fit the trial saddles to your horse. Using panels of foam the saddle can be fitted to your horse to give you nearly the exact same feeling you will have if you were to have a saddle handmade to fit your horse. Sabine indicates that most riders will immediately feel an improvement in the way their horse goes. If you decide to go ahead and purchase a Voltaire Design saddle, Sabine will take the exact measurements using the company’s dynamic fitting system. The saddle will be made in the company’s workshop in France and from there is posted directly to the owner. Sabine suggests the rider uses it for a couple of weeks, after which she will visit, check the fit and be available to provide advice if necessary.

French chic

Voltaire is producing performance saddles, with a twist of French chic, as shown in the detailing, such as the striped leather along the underside of the gullet and again on the leather strap, which holds the stirrup leather. The company is currently working on several new accessories, all of which MAY 2015 Localrider 33

Laura and her homebred mare, Nessa, who is proving a very bold young horse.

Laura Powell writes...

I sit here writing this burnt to a cinder, having been riding all day in the freak April heatwave. It wasn’t until the seventh horse at 2pm, when I noticed how red my skin was and already it was too late. The last four weeks have been a bit disappointing. Alf has had a virus, which seemed to last forever and he’s only just over it now and back in work. He must have a really sensitive immune system as everything seems to get him, or is it just the fact he’s chestnut and white? Nessa however is really mellowing in the warm weather, the naughty behaviour is slowly becoming less and less. She’s really starting to fill out and has started to develop muscles in the right places. I’m so pleased in that she appears to be a bold as her mother. She has been skipping round show jumps and we even jumped a ‘long water’ with ease, as it was out in the arena at home. Then I took her for a quick spin round Lodge Farm cross-country course on a quiet Wednesday afternoon. As usual the ground was perfect, immaculate fences - including lots of new ones and we had the place to ourselves - result. Nessa impressed me so much hopping over everything I pointed her at including water, ditches, steps and skinnies. I was particularly impressed when I dropped to trot to jump a narrow combination that had confused her last year and she immediately locked on, picked up canter and sailed through it. Our unaffiliated BE80 is looming closer and I can’t wait! If all goes well the plan will be to give her a short holiday in the field afterwards as she is in desperate need of a mini break and then do the autumn events. The emphasis really is quality not quantity with her as she’s still got a lot of maturing to do and I don’t want to burn her out as a five-year-old. Elsewhere I have been mega busy teaching, Easter was filled with Pony Club. West Kent Meopham run a two day camp at Eaglesfield EC, which offers a lot to members with great facilities. My private clients are also very keen and at the moment I’m struggling to fit them all in. However, I feel I must mention Roz, who has made me feel really proud. Roz is one of my clients who has had a lesson practically every week for the last six years. The main reason being to help exercise her daughter’s horse, her daughter has a full time job in London. I would describe Roz as a cautious, but effective rider who is happy to keep the horse ticking along. The horse is now 11-years-old and very well schooled! After what feels like years of persuasion I managed to get Roz to a local dressage show to do the Prelim class, which was well supported. Roz reaped rewards from years of training and came second by a nose with 69.5%. Now all I have to do is get her to enter another test - could be a while!

We’ve put together a selection of products you might like to consider, plus there is a competition too, don’t forget to enter.

WIN! Majyk X-Country Boots

M

ajyk Equipe is an exciting US protective boot brand, which is available exclusively through premium retailers Shadow Horse here in the UK. With a strong technical focus, their protective boot collection incorporates advanced materials with anatomical design to achieve some of the most protective (proven through independent test results), comfortable and durable boots on the market place. The Majyk X-Country Boots offer both excellent protection and performance without a hefty price tag. When launched in the states these boots sold out and it’s easy to see why. The outer shell of the boots is made of advanced, extremely robust rip-stop material which is not only

easy to clean, but also repels moisture and ‘breathes’ to allow heat generated from the leg to dispel naturally away. A generous shatter-proof TPU strike guard is also breathable while flexing with the horse’s joints, allowing further freedom of movement with excellent protection around this vulnerable area. Inside a ‘Hyperflex’ lining sits against the horses skin and gently conforms and moulds to the leg to allow for a snug, yet comfortable fit, which won’t slip even when wet. Available in Horse size only in black.

NAF Ice Cool Ice Cool is a highly effective 24 hour cooling clay, containing a blend of natural clays and traditional ingredients recognised for their cooling properties. Event Horses - Ultimate Athletes Watching the fabulous horses competing at Badminton and other horse trials makes you realise what complete, all round athletes they are. With the agility and suppleness of dressage, the speed and power of cross country followed by the precision and effort of the show jumping phase these are truly the triathletes of the equestrian world. No self-respecting human athlete would consider their training regime complete without several sessions in the gym each week to work on specific muscle groups to enhance their performance on the track or field. Similarly with equine athletes, sports science has made training more effective without as much wear and tear from endless distance work. From interval training to gymnastic lunge exercises horses can now be got fit and prepared with less strain. Dr Hilary Bentley of EquiAmi says that many exercises on the lunge increase hind limb strength enabling greater engagement and lifting over the back. This in turn improves lightness of the forehand and strong abdominals which are all essential for the three phases of eventing. Achieving this is much easier using a good lunge aid such as the EquiAmi which invites and rewards the horse for developing wither lift by softening as soon as they respond. Even at lower levels we ask our horses to do long jump, high jump, sprints, middle and long distance running alongside a mixture of dance and gymnastics so lungeing exercises, as part of your regular fitness training, will get more from your equine Rosie Thomas and Barrys Best competing athlete at every at Badminton. Rosie uses EquiAmi as level. part of her training programme.

Enhancing Horses’ Performance Words by Ed Lyall Vet Med Cert EM (Stud Med) MRCVS of the Arundel Equine Hospital

V

ets are most commonly called to look at horses that are lame or obviously not well. The limp that suggests lameness or the poor appetite which alerts the owner or rider to the fact that there is something wrong with the horse. In such horses the clinical signs are noticeable, but increasingly now we are asked to look at horses that are fundamentally sound and healthy to see if there is anything that is limiting the performance of the horse that could be corrected or managed in a different way to enhance how well the horse competes. This may be from an orthopaedic or medical point of view.

Fulfilling potential Often horses work and perform to an acceptable level with various injuries or medical problems; however if they were in perfect health and totally pain free they may be able to perform to a higher level. When a sportsperson is in pain they visit their doctor or physiotherapist and discuss exactly how they feel, unfortunately horses can only communicate by showing lameness or another symptom. A dip in performance can indicate a problem, but for many horses performance does not reduce, it just never quite reaches its potential. It has to be said that the biggest cause of poor performance is lack of ability, not every horse can be an Olympic contender, but there are some that could be if performance limiting issues were corrected. Performance enhancement is not about injecting illegal drugs, rather it is about enabling a horse to reach its natural potential. Many riders ask for their horses to be routinely examined every three or four months, some ask for them to be examined prior to important competitions and some ask for the examination to be carried out due to the observed dip in performance. I initially ask what level the horse is working at and what its anticipated level is. I then ask if there have been any observed problems such as intermittent lameness, swelling of a joint, changes in its technique over a fence, a change in the horses eating habits, etc. I basically get a detailed history looking for any clues as to potential problems.

In-depth tests

Following this detailed clinical examination I make suggestions of further diagnostic modalities that could be made use of to further evaluate the horses well being. Usually a radiographic survey is carried out to look at foot balance and general joint health, particularly of the feet, hocks, stifles and fetlocks, but also the back and increasingly the neck. In some instances a bone scan is performed particularly if a back, sacroiliac or neck problem is suspected. Ultrasonography can be used to assess the tendons and ligaments of the distal limbs if an injury here is suspected. Endoscopy of the airway, to look for laryngeal problems, and the stomach, to look for gastric ulcers, can also be carried out. In some instances I will suggest an MRI scan, particularly if I suspect a complex forelimb problem associated with the distal limb. One of the main techniques at our disposal is the nerve or joint block. By anaesthetising regions of the limb or particular joints and then seeing how the horse moves afterwards is like asking a horse if it hurts and where. Nerve and joint blocks are used also to assess the significance of clinical findings such as a swollen joint or a radiographic abnormality associated with a joint. Often what is actually observed in older performance horses is a complex multilimb lameness; here blocks are invaluable for working out what is significant. One thing that must be remembered is that during this examination evidence of old injuries may be found, but they may not be causing performance limiting pain, they may actually be settled and insignificant. Unfortunately it is not possible to fix all ailments that are performance limiting, however it is still worth looking to see what problems are present and to then work out a treatment plan. This may include medication of gastric ulcers, liaising with farriers over foot balance, medicating joints, shock waving high suspensory injuries or involving physiotherapists in dealing with muscular stiffness, etc.

The Arundel Equine Hospital

Examining the horse The horse is then examined in the stable, I look at the general health indicated by demeanour, body weight and coat condition. I look at symmetry and degree of muscular development and the general relaxed stance of the horse. Sometimes a blood sample is collected prior to exercise and submitted for routine biochemistry and haematology. The eyes, heart and lungs are examined. I then palpate the horse all over feeling the back, neck and limbs for obvious swellings, heat and pain. I also check the normal range of motion of the joints. Out of the stable the horse is stood up squarely and its conformation is checked. I then like to see the horse walked and trotted in a straight line on a firm flat surface. The way the feet are placed and the character of the gait are noted, for example whether it is short and choppy in front or behind or whether it lands toe or heel first. Flexion tests are performed on all four limbs including the upper and lower limbs. An assessment of the ability to rein back and cross the hind limbs when turned short over the forelimbs is made, this can demonstrate problems such as hock pain or sacroiliac instability. I then watch the horse being lunged on a soft surface at walk, trot and canter. During this stage of the examination I listen to the horse’s breathing as well as look at the gait. I like to see lots of up and down transitions to see how well the horse is balanced. The heart is examined again at the end of the exercise test. A comparison of the gait is also made at trot on the lunge on a hard surface. Following this the horse is saddled and the rider demonstrates how the horse works, this may involve complex dressage movements to look at symmetry of step or jumping fences to demonstrate the horse’s technique. One thing I do like to see is the horse walk in a straight line on a soft surface as this allows for an assessment of the horses postural muscle tone. Sometimes I will even ride a horse, if the owner permits, to see how it feels.

OUR SERVICES The team of 17 dedicated equine vets provide veterinary services throughout East and West Sussex, and into Surrey and Hampshire. All aspects of equine practice are catered for including pre-purchase examinations, lameness investigations, performance horse management, dentistry, medical evaluations and stud medicine (AI chilled/frozen, embryo transfer), as well as all routine veterinary management. We provide a full range of on the road digital diagnostic services such as x-ray, ultrasound and endoscopy/gastroscopy. The practice has the back up of the RCVS Accredited Hospital, staffed by vets 24 hours a day, where a range of orthopaedic and soft tissue surgeries can be carried out, patients can be hospitalised, sick foals can be nursed and bone scans can be performed. First Aid Action...

yourself in danger, make the area safe. The main aims of first aid are always to: • Preserve life • Prevent further harm • Promote recovery A medical emergency is an injury or illness that is acute and poses an immediate risk to a person’s life or long term health. Below is a list of examples of when a medical professional should be called: • Loss of consciousness • Poisoning • Severe burns • Spinal injuries • Problems with movement or sensation following an injury • A gaping wound with edges that do not come together • Bleeding that persists after 10 to 15 minutes of pressure • Sudden severe pain anywhere in the body • Breathing difficulties • Sudden dizziness, weakness or change in vision • Chest or abdominal pain or pressure • Suspected concussion • Choking

Prompt first aid treatment can have an important influence on the eventual outcome of an injury. What you do, and how quickly, can have a dramatic impact on healing time and recovery. In order for treatment to be effective it is vital that you have access to a well stocked first aid kit whilst at home on the yard and when away at competitions. In the event of an incident with your horse, where a potential injury has occurred, first of all ensure that neither you nor your horse is in any further danger and make the area as safe as possible. Always remember to keep calm and get help if necessary. You need to then assess the horse, including any wound or injury and decide if veterinary assistance is required immediately.

Assessing the Horse

• P rioritise – profuse bleeding, fractures, burns, suspected poisonings all need immediate attention. • Vital signs – check temperature, pulse and respiration (you should already know what is normal for your horse). • Shock – major trauma, colic, heat stroke etc. can cause a horse to go in to shock. Signs of shock include excessive sweating and rapid shallow breathing. • Look at the colour of the mucous membrane (such as the gums), a healthy colour is pink (very pale may indicate shock, purple/ blue may indicate low oxygen levels). • Check capillary refill time time (e.g. by pressing on the gums) and hydration.

Find a quiet space for the vet to check the horse

It is a good idea to attend a basic first aid course so that you have the correct knowledge and skills to deal with first aid emergencies. There are also courses available specifically aimed at horse riders. Below is a list of basic points to remember: • Always remain calm and never attempt to deal with injuries if you are not confident of the correct procedure. • If there is severe bleeding apply direct pressure to the wound, raise and support the injured part (unless broken), apply a dressing and bandage firmly in place. • If a broken bone or spinal injury is suspected, obtain expert help. Do not move casualties unless they are in immediate danger. For more information contact Robinson Animal Healthcare on 01909 735000 or visit www.robinsonhealthcare.com

Cuts such as this will always require the vet to visit

Call the Vet when: • Wound is spurting blood (arterial bleeding). • Wound requires stitching – is the wound deep or longer than 2.5cm? • Wound has foreign bodies embedded in it. • There is excessive swelling. • Horse’s temperature rises above 38.9°C (102°F). • Horse has not been vaccinated against tetanus. • Shock is suspected. • You are unsure what to do.

Time to test for

worms…

Changing our ways can be difficult, but with the growing resistance of worms to drugs, the worry is the drugs won’t be effective when they are really needed. Through worm counts and saliva samples Westgate Labs can help single horse owners and large yards manage their worming programme. Here we find out more.

F

or at least the last fifty Gillian years horse owners have Booth SQP followed specifically owner of designed programmes, Westgate worming their horses at least Labs four times a year. They have lived in fear of their horses suffering from large worm burdens and the resulting consequences, such as colic and ultimately death. So it is understandable that many owners feel a reluctance to trust in a test, rather than the peace of mind brought from worming their horses. However, there is strong clinical evidence showing that red worms have built up a resistance to wormers and the most recommended advice now is to test using a worm egg count and to only worm if the count exceeds 200 eggs per gram. Gillian Booth SQP and owner of Westgate Labs said: “By using tests instead of routine worming you will save giving many unnecessary doses to your horse. I can’t emphasise strongly enough how important this is. Every time the worms are exposed to a worming drug the most resistant strains will not be killed. Instead they go on to reproduce and create a bigger population of resistant worms so that the wormers gradually get less and less effective. There is already some resistance to every drug we use to treat our horses. What will we do in the future when there is nothing left to use on the wormy horses who need treating? A very scary thought indeed.”

wormed. All of the horses apart from one older mare returned results of less than 200 eggs per gram and therefore did not need to be wormed. The yard plans to continue testing the horses, before worming as dictated by the results.

What about tapeworm?

Up until now the only accurate way to determine tapeworm has been via a blood test. For most this hasn’t been necessary, so horses have continually been wormed twice a year against tapeworm. However, now there is a new saliva test, which can indicate a tape worm burden in a horse. The good news is over 75% of horses don’t have tapeworm, but for those who do, the test can help to determine when the burden This image has reduced and which drug is shows a most effective. pinworm All you have to do is to use sellotape test the specially designed swab down the to collect a saliva sample from microscope. your horse by inserting it in the side of his mouth in the space where the bit normally sits. Wait for the indicator to turn pink. This shows that enough saliva has been absorbed into the swab and can take a few minutes.

WESTGATE LABORATORIES

Westgate Labs provide all the information and everything you need to get started on their website www.westgatelabs.co.uk. All you need to do is order your kit, take a fresh sample of dung from your horse, pop it in the container provided and return it in the padded envelope. At the laboratory a small sample of dung is prepared using a centrifuge and examined under the microscope to find out how many worm eggs are present. You cannot see them with the naked eye. If the count is in excess of 200 eggs per gram, it is recommended that you worm your horse. Westgate Labs recommend that the horse is then re-tested at some point after worming to see if there has been a reduction in the number of eggs.

About the trainer: Gemma Tattersall started riding at the age of 18 months (as her mother had a riding school), she proved to be a natural and by the time she was eight-yearsold, had won the Riding Club Junior (U17) Dressage Championship and her first one-day event. Gemma progressed rapidly, campaigning successfully in pony trials and being selected to be part of the Junior British team. This was a stepping-stone to representing Great Britain at Young Rider level, which she did for two consecutive years, winning two team Gold medals. Gemma is currently on the lottery-funded ‘World Class Development programme’, which is a lottery funded training scheme aimed to support up and coming athletes who show potential as future Olympic candidates. Gemma has consistently competed at Badminton and Burghley since 2007 and in 2010 was the Under 25 National Champion. In 2014, Gemma was fifth at Burghley and now has her eyes set firmly on her goal of becoming Senior British Team member.

In the run up to an event, try to improve on you and your horse’s performance but be realistic and don’t push yourself or your horse, beyond your capabilities. You do need to do your homework and of course concentrate on the weaker areas, but don’t forget to make a mental note also of all the good things. You need to look at what exactly you are nervous of and why in order to address it. If you are nervous because you don’t feel ready to be competing at that level, then don’t. Just because everyone else at the yard thinks you should be competing higher, it doesn’t mean you have to. It is better to get your confidence at a lower level then gradually build up, than have all your confidence wiped out in one disastrous outing. You do need to push yourself forward, but I cannot recommend enough getting a good instructor and one you can trust to help guide you up through the levels. If you are nervous because you have had a bad fall, then go back to basics and build up slowly. If your horse was naughty at say a ditch and you fell off, then ask your instructor to school your horse over ditches in order to regain confidence and be armed with the tools to help you tackle this situation should he or she try to put a stop in again. Preparing for an event in practical ways, will also give you one less thing to worry about. For example making sure all of your riding equipment and clothing is ready and clean so you don’t have a last minute panic is not only sensible, but can also be quite therapeutic and empowering, because you are doing something positive and taking positive action to ensure things run smoothly on the day. Running though your test mentally, walking your courses (both show jumping & cross country) in your mind and making sure you know them inside out is something which I find really helps. Once you have done this distract yourself with something such as a good book or a game on your phone so you don’t keep going over and over it. Making sure that you have a clear plan for your warm-up can also help focus the

mind. Concentrate on riding and warming up to the best of your ability rather than worrying about the actual competition. If nerves are really affecting your riding and competing then maybe consider getting some help. Working with a sports psychologist or life coach could help you re-focus and dispel nerves. Even at the top, riders can have confidence crisis so don’t feel like you are alone.

FEED NEWS

Feed Your Horse’s Personality As the season gets off to a flying start and show dates are pencilled into your calendar are you and your horse ready for the busy summer ahead? Harriett Beaumont events her good doer, Annaghmore Bonita, up to Novice level on ReadyFibre Mash with ReadyMash Extra added in before competition days.

Words by Rebecca Hollows of Rowan Barbary Horse Feeds

G

ood feeding is key to success for any competition horse and a carefully managed diet can mean the difference between first and second place. When planning a diet for your horse consider what your main goals are for 2015, what will you be asking your horse to do? When choosing a feed it is important to remember that every horse is an individual with no two horses being exactly alike in size, shape and type. For example a highly strung Thoroughbred’s diet will vary dramatically to that of a laid back Middleweight, so just because a feed works well on one horse, it will not necessarily do the same for another.

The Adrenaline Junkie These type of horses tend to be naturally very forward going and can become easily excitable, so it is important to keep the levels of starch in the diet to a minimum, diets containing high levels of starch that are digested relatively quickly by the horse produce fast release energy which is the type of energy that can cause some horses to become over excitable. Choose a feed that is high in fibre and if additional energy is required for stamina consider adding oils into the diet.

The Fussy Eater

Perfect Partner

Charlotte Fill competes her stallion, Stanhopes Odwig who is described as being the perfect partner, at PSG level on ReadyMash.

There are many reasons why a horse may be a fussy eater, whether this is due to the flavour and texture of the feeds or if they just have a small appetite. If possible divide the overall concentrate into as many small meals a day as possible in order to avoid overloading the stomach which can cause digestive upsets and affect appetite. Choose a feed that is nutrient or energy dense, high oil supplements are also an extremely useful way of boosting calorie intake without significantly adding to the overall volume fed.

The Sensitive Horse If you have a horse that is sensitive and suffers from a feed intolerance you first need to establish what component of the feed is responsible, which often means placing a horse on an elimination diet. The simplest way to do this is to go back to basics by feeding your horse a high quality fibre based product and then slowly building your horses feed back up. Choose a feed that is cereal free with a very low starch and sugar content, ideally with a combined level of less than 10%.

The Good Doer

Adrenaline Junkie

Karen Corr feeds Solution Mash to Squiggle, who is described as an adrenaline junkie.

The good doer often lacks energy and can tend to be a bit lazy. However putting more energy into the diet can often increase the risk of weight gain, so the first objective is to ensure that they are of a healthy weight and that the diet is well balanced. If more energy is still required choose a feed that contains some cereals, as this will provide instant fast release energy. However, be careful to adjust the quantity fed depending upon work.

The Perfect Partner If you are lucky enough to own a perfect partner then the main consideration should be given to feed according to workload and condition. Most horses in light to moderate work such as those competing in regular Pony Club and Riding Club activities will do well on a high fibre diet that is fully balanced. However, a horse in hard or intense work will need a combination of energy sources including fibre, oils, protein and cereals to meet the demands of work. Feeding the

Competition

Horse

There are a range of products to help your horse perform to his maximum potential and here we look at both feed and supplements, which have been designed to help your horse look and feel his best.

Mollichaff Calmer minerals, and in particular, magnesium, play a vital role in the diet of the horse, helping to maintain a normal blood sugar level and improving the sensitivity of cells to insulin. magnesium is also important for the general growth and repair of tissue and assists with blood circulation and transmission of nerve impulses. In the spring when the growth is lush, grass can have an increased sugar content due to its fast growth, but this often means that it is deficient in minerals, including magnesium. This in turn can lead to a magnesium deficiency in the horse’s diet. The result of this is very often a fresh, excitable horse and that is when many owners turn to a calming supplement or feed. Of course there can be many other reasons for a fizzy, tense horse and it is important to try and find out why so make sure you analyse your horse’s diet and exercise routine too. If your horse just has a nervous temperament, patience and a quiet atmosphere can help too. If you think your horse may have a magnesium deficiency, ask your vet to take a blood sample to check it out. an alternative to an expensive calming supplement is a complete fibre feed such as mollichaff Calmer. It contains a balanced blend of fibre pellets, oat straw, dried grass, herbs, soya oil, vitamins, minerals, limestone and trace elements, and it can be used as the sole bucket feed. It is suitable for all horses and ponies, including laminitics, as it is low in sugar and starch providing limited controlled energy from high quality, digestible fibre and oil-based ingredients. mollichaff Calmer includes elevated levels of magnesium along with a carefully formulated combination of camomile, lemon balm and mint, to help relax your horse. It also contains Vitamins B1 and B12 which are known to help decrease anxiety by exerting a calming influence on the horse.

Speedi-Beet for Rapid Rehydration Speedi-Beet from British Horse Feeds is a unique beet pulp feed soaked and ready to use in under ten minutes. extremely palatable, it is high in fibre and unmolassed making it 95% sugar free. The non-heating feed provides rapid rehydration for performance horses whilst optimising energy release rate. This is due to the soluble fibre in Speedi-Beet, which has a high water holding capacity increasing the amount of fluid in the horse’s hindgut. This reservoir can then be drawn upon during prolonged exercise to help replace water lost through sweating. adding small amounts of Speedi-Beet to water may also encourage difficult horses to drink during events. www.britishhorsefeeds.com

Haygain Steamers even high quality hays contain particles of dust that are so small you can’t see them. These particles have a 50% chance of being inhaled deep into the lungs, potentially causing the respiratory disorder Recurrent airway Obstruction (RaO). While soaking will reduce this dust, it leaches out valuable nutrients and can actually increase the bacterial content of the hay, thereby dropping the hygienic quality of the fodder. Steaming in a HAYGAIN hay steamer is preferable to soaking because: • Steaming conserves valuable minerals and electrolytes, very important in the summer time • Steaming kills 99% of the mould and bacteria present in fodder • Steaming does not produce biologically hazardous effluent • Steamed hay remains fresh (low dust, bacteria and mould) for several days so a completely strung bale can be steamed and fed gradually as and when the horse comes into the stable. www.propressequine.com

TopSpec Performance Cubes

Consisting of a highly palatable, high energy blend of cooked cereals, oils and proteins Hunter Competition mix is formulated to provide a well balanced supply of slow and instant release energy for horses in hard work. Quality digestible proteins sources are used to help achieve correct bone, muscle and tissue growth whilst providing optimum levels of micronutrients for horses that excel in the area of sustained high performance. Formulated with high oil levels not only for sustained energy but also to maintain good skin and coat condition.

TopSpec Performance Cubes provide energy for work, but are ‘NonHeating’ and are ideal for horses that are a bit sharp or get fizzy on cereal-based competition mixes or cubes. They are designed to be added to a TopSpec feed balancer or supplement and therefore contain no added vitamins or traceelements, but do include the major minerals calcium, sodium and magnesium. TopSpec Performance Cubes are formulated without the use of any cereal-grains, so they are not just ‘oat-free’ or ‘barley-free’ but completely cereal-grain free. at the same time they have a good calorific index of 12.5mJ/kg, and are low in starch and sugar, but high in fibre. TopSpec Performance Cubes are balanced for protein with high-oil soya and linseed, and with available sources of calcium, magnesium and salt added. The highly digestible fibre in the cubes helps to promote the beneficial bacteria in the hindgut therefore helping to maintain a healthy digestive system. They are an excellent choice when relaxed and focused performance is required and are perfect for horses and ponies requiring a lowstarch/high-fibre diet.

“Whilst the vital role of nutrition in equine health is universally recognised, it can be difficult for busy vets to always find the time to discuss specific requirements with their clients fully. It is therefore immensely reassuring to know that, by referring such clients to TopSpec, they will be receiving the most up to date and scientifically researched advice, supported by an ever increasing range of proven feeds, balancers and supplements. The feedback I get is invariably full of praise for both TopSpec’s help, and for their products. Thank you also TopSpec for servicing so impeccably the nutritional needs of our own ponies over the years. Gunner, now in his 17th year, remains at the very top of his game, and I would not dream of feeding him on anything else.” Rebecca Hamilton-Fletcher MRCVS BVSc (Hons)

Feed news Supplements Red Cell Competition and Recovery

New from the same stable as the popular supplement Red Cell, two new products have been released: Red Cell Recovery Paste, aids horses muscles to recover faster post-event and Red Cell Competition, a high performance muscle support supplement. Red Cell Recovery Paste assists the correct muscle function and repair whilst preventing muscle breakdown that may occur from intense competition and training. Other benefits include reducing oxidative stress that occurs through exercise. The Recovery Paste provides amino acids, electrolytes, vitamins and minerals to return horses to peak fitness for their next class. Red Cell Competition is an advocate of stamina and peak performance and prevents cell and tissue damage through reducing free radicals, whilst reducing oxidative stress. The formula is designed to offer support during intense exercise and combines two antioxidants which prevent cell and tissue damage. www.lesliesutcliffe.com

Mobility Horslyx Mobility Horslyx is a nutrient rich lick containing Glucosamine HCl, MSM and Omega Oils, all vital to support optimum joint function. The high specification vitamin, mineral and trace element package - which incorporates Vitamin C, Vitamin E and selenium - supports the body’s ability to absorb the vital nutrients, helping maintain a strong immune system and promote overall health and vitality. Simple and easy to use, Mobility Horslyx offers horse owners a unique method of feeding to support healthy joints, plus the opportunity to balance any deficiencies in their forage, grazing and hard feed. This includes the addition of Biotin, Methionine and chelated Zinc to promote healthy hooves. Mobility Horslyx is a highly palatable choice for all equines - even those on a restricted diet - providing owners with a fuss-free, weatherproof, healthy feed containing no artificial colours or preservatives. www.horslyx.com

Equine America Apple Lytes Granules Feed Apple Lytes Granules daily to horses or ponies in hard work, especially those who are sweating. As horses work and sweat they lose vital electrolytes and mineral salts. At low levels these can be replaced with Sodium Chloride (salt) but, if the horse is in medium to hard work and sweating on a daily basis, an electrolyte supplement must be provided. Without electrolytes, the horse will feel lethargic, and a continuation of this loss is highly detrimental to the horse’s health. As the main electrolyte is a salt (sodium chloride) it is important to use a salt – granular based product (not a solution) as it is not possible to suspend enough of the mineral salts needed within a solution. Apple Lytes is a salt-based product which can be added to the feed on a daily basis. For high level competition and endurance events, Apple Lytes is also available in a handy syringe for instant replenishment of electrolytes. Electrolytes should not be fed to a dehydrated horse - always ensure water has been ingested first, and that the horse has recovered from exercise. www.equine-america.co.uk

NAF Respirator Boost Five Star Respirator Boost provides valuable nutritional support to the respiratory mucosal immune system and the delicate capillary blood vessels that surround the lungs. Research shows that by supplementing the diet with naturally sourced anti-oxidants, the horse’s lungs can be given valuable support. Five Star Respirator Boost contains a concentrated solution of natural antioxidants, alongside herbs such as ginger, rosehip and blueberries, chosen for their targeted support of healthy lung function. Echinacea is also included for immune system support while essential oils help maintain clear airways. ww.naf-equine.eu/uk

TopSpec UlsaKind Cubes

Designed to support vitality, provide nutritional support of the pituitary gland and optimise gut function. Cushinaze is unique, as it combines key herbal elements known for supporting the pituitary gland, including Chasteberry, with essential nutritive support of the whole horse. Gut health is provided by live probiotic yeasts to ensure efficient metabolism and optimum condition, in combination with magnesium to support healthy glucose metabolism. Healthy hooves are supplemented by MSM, with scientifically verified antioxidants giving additional support to the liver. Ginkgo and ginseng are included to herbally support a bright, active mind in aging animals. Cushinaze also provides essential immune support for general health and vitality.

TopSpec UlsaKind cubes, the newest addition to TopSpec’s portfolio of horse feeds captured a prestigious Innovation Award at this year’s BETA International. Winner of the Feed & Supplements category the judges said: “Extensive research has gone into this well-produced product, which is nicely priced and in appealing packaging with labelling clearly listing the ingredients.” TopSpec UlsaKind cubes are formulated to be highly sympathetic to the equine digestive system, even when it is compromised by extreme acidity. The formula is very low in starch (UltraLowStarchAnalysis) and sugar and high in fibre but still has a conditioning index of 12MJ/kg making these cubes both ‘Non-Heating’ and conditioning. TopSpec UlsaKind Cubes are ideal in those circumstances where the internal surface of the stomach has been eroded, because they contain very high levels of Beta-glucans which form a gel and coat the stomach lining with a protective film. The gel-like stomach contents are less likely to splash the upper squamous epithelium in the stomach. TopSpec UlsaKind cubes are also highly suitable for any horses or ponies requiring a low-starch/high-fibre diet for other reasons e.g. Those prone to, being treated for or recovering from laminitis, those that are ‘fizzy’ on highstarch feeds, those susceptible to muscle dysfunction when on high-starch feeds, those needing support for correct limb development, those intolerant to high-starch feeds for other reasons.

NAF Five Star Magic Five Star magic is a magnesium calmer with a difference. It’s a five star formula that contains a unique combination of herbs and nutrients known to help relax muscle tissue and support concentration. It contains magnesium, an essential nutrient to a horse’s wellbeing - among its many roles is the regulation of nervous tension. as magnesium also acts on muscle tension, a horse low in magnesium may appear ‘tight’ in his way of going and express excitability or a lack of confidence. To support the benefits of magnesium, Five Star magic also contains a blend of herbs chosen for their traditional use in supporting confidence and concentration. The unique blend of nutrients enables the horse to tackle all that is asked of it, calmly and confidently. Five Star Liquid magic has the advantage of extracting the active ingredients from the herbs, making them more readily available for absorption by the horse. The calming effects can be seen fast. When stress and anxiety is spoiling performance, feed Five Star magic daily to support confidence and concentration so that you can really get the most out of your horse or pony! ww.naf-equine.eu/uk
