he best part of the past month was the Hickstead Derby Meeting. We are very grateful that so many of you came to visit us on our stand, it is always good to put a face to a name and of course we love hearing all your horsey news. The highlight of the Meeting is the Carpetright Derby and Paul Beecher’s convincing double clear on Loughnatousa WB has to be one of the best wins of the last few years. In the Press Room after his win he said: “To compete here is magical to win the Derby is fantastic.” The Derby Meeting offers something for everyone and riders from the South East appear to have taken the majority of the spoils, which is of course what we like to see. From showing to scurry racing, to show jumping in the main arena turn to page 43 to find out who the champions are. The more disappointing side to the last month has been the increasing number of shows which have been lost to the bad weather. Very few events have run since Eridge (report page 25) and even the big shows are being hit. As we go to print the Great Yorkshire has been abandoned after only one day of competition and the Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe has been cancelled too. The rain has to stop as this is Olympic year and for horse lovers all thoughts turn to Greenwich. Turn to page 28 for our compact guide to the main events, with a few of our favourite facts and figures to help you prepare for two exciting weeks of equestrian action. Whatever you are doing this summer remember we love to hear from you and don’t forget we are just an email away if you have any news or views you would like to share.

news Lorenzo to headline new action-packed equestrian event in London

N

ew event ADRENALINE, produced EquiCirque in London 16-18 November will be headlined by Lorenzo, the world famous ‘Flying Frenchman’. Lorenzo’s incredible show of 12 grey Lusitano horses has to be seen to be believed. Performed in the arena without bridle or saddle and including flying over jumps while standing on the back of his horses, the show relies entirely on the beautifully trained horses and the relationship and trust between them and Lorenzo. For the first time Lorenzo will be accompanied by a full line-up of other world-leading equestrian artists – Gilles Fortier, Clémence Faivre, Los Rios, Joel Chacon and Hap Ô Tempo, many of whom have not performed in the UK before – making this a unique opportunity, eagerly anticipated by the horse world. Catch a preview online now at www.EquiCirque.com by watching the trailer on the event homepage. Tickets On Sale Now: Tickets are selling fast and seating options for some performances are already limited. If you want to see this show then book soon to avoid disappointment and get some of the best seats available. See www.EquiCirque.com/LR1 for full details.

Twemlow Horsebox Services International show jumping judge Chris Twemlow has another string to his bow, custom building horseboxes. With years of mechanical experience behind him Chris has been building bespoke horseboxes for a number of top names on the show jumping circuit. The interior can be matched to customer’s requirements, although Chris had to draw the line at building a bathroom. Space wasn’t a problem, just where to store that much water on the lorry. If you fancy finding out more telephone 01444 243633 or call in at the Twemlow Horsebox Services at the Mid Sussex Business Park. Chris also offers repairs, refurbishment and horseboxes for hire.

A Right Royal Day Out! This year’s Royal County of Berkshire Show (15 – 16 September) provides a worthy finale to Britain’s outdoor show jumping season. The County Show has become a firm favourite in the competition calendar – as well as a great day out for the whole family. Top of the bill in the Main Arena is the ‘International Stairway Final’ – now in its fourth year. Up to 30 competitors are set to battle it out, with a total of £7,500 prize money at stake. Olympic hopeful, Tina Fletcher, is tipped to be amongst the contenders. The series was created as part of an initiative by British Show Jumping to identify and assess both potential and existing British team competitors, and international riders and horses. Riders will compete at major county shows throughout the summer to clock up league points before heading to Berkshire. The packed weekend will also include Royal International Horse Show qualifiers with a variety of hotly contended showing classes – from amateur and open show to working hunters. For the first time this year, there will also be a class for Cleveland Bays and Friesian breeds. The Sunday will largely be devoted to pony classes where all our native breeds will be shown in hand and under saddle, plus classes for ‘Retrained Racehorses’. With the showground’s close proximity to Lambourn – a village famous for its association with the training of the world’s finest race horses – these are set to be well supported in both numbers and quality. Earlybird ticket discounts available – a family of four can save 24%. Buy tickets online from June and from local outlets in late July. Even on the day, it’s just £18 for adults for a great day out. Safe and Hygienic Feeding with KBF99 Horses have sensitive digestive systems and can quickly become ill if toxins are ingested. We all know the importance of hygienic feeding practices to minimise the risk, but did you know there is now a product range available offering extra protection? The KBF99 feed scoop, bucket and salt lick holder all actively help to maintain hygienic feeding as the unique additive in the products kill bacteria, fungus and mycotoxins. These exciting new KBF99 products were tested at Coventry University and effectively killed 99% of the bacteria test culture (Strangles, Ringworm and E.Coli). The products are chemical free and can dramatically reduce harmful bacteria and fungus in the horse’s environment when combined with hygienic management. www.kbf99.co.uk

Magnetic Bell Boots The Harpley Equestrian Magnetic Bell Boots are made in England, from high quality close knit Warmwick fabric which wicks moisture away and keeps the body at an even temperature. The velcro straps keep the bell boots firmly in place and the boots are shaped to sit comfortably around the ankle and over the hoof. There are 3 ‘rare earth’ Neodymium magnets encapsulated in the fabric. The magnets are formulated to last 15 years and are 2000 gauss strength which penetrate up to 6”. These high strength magnets will increase localized blood circulation, warming the area and widening the blood vessels. This helps the absorption of oxygen into the blood which brings nutrients, removes toxins and stimulates the body to heal itself by its own natural healing ability. This superb product has all the benefits of magnetic therapy as well as wicking properties which helps in the treatment of abscesses, wall cracks and more serious problems such as laminitis, navicular and ring bone. www.harpleyequestrian.co.uk 6 Localrider AUGUST 2012

Sarah Gadd joins Hickstead Horse Feed’s team of riders Hickstead Horse feeds are proud to announce their latest sponsorship signing of talented event rider, 21-year-old Sarah Gadd. Based in Canterbury, Kent, Sarah started affiliated eventing in 2008, competing at her first International 1* in 2009. This is no mean fete when considering her horse ‘Still Learning’ was brought from Ascot Bloodstock sales in October 2007 fresh out of training as a racehorse! In early 2010, Sarah was involved in a horrendous car crash which saw her in intensive care for 15 days. Not to be deterred, she was back in the saddle within months, and slowly producing her talented homebred, Diamond Mill (Milli), who we will see at National four year old qualifiers this year. Sarah and ‘Still Learning’ (Roxie) have since successfully re-qualified for 1* competitions, and will be contesting in Intermediate and 2* competitions later on this season. Hickstead Horse Feeds warmly welcome Sarah into our South East team with fellow event rider Gemma Tattersall and International show jumper Guy Williams.

With its uncompromised specification and affordable quality, SPILLERS® Horse & Pony Mix is a great choice for horses and ponies in light to medium work. “It doesn’t matter whether you have a top level competition horse or a family pony, good nutrition can change the way a horse looks, goes and feels,” says Clare Barfoot BSc (Hons) RNutr, the research and development manager for SPILLERS®. “A diet that supplies the nutrients to meet your horse’s nutritional requirements will support his long term well-being and health. Ultrathon Insect Repellent A recent survey conducted by 3M Ultrathon Insect Repellent has revealed the true disruption caused by mosquitoes in the UK. While many of us associate biting insects with the sunnier climes of foreign countries, it seems that the UK is where we are most likely to have our outdoor activities interrupted by these little critters. Available as a spray, a lotion and now as a new pump spray, Ultrathon Insect Repellent can provide up to 12 hours protection from biting insects yet doesn’t have a high content of DEET, the active ingredient. Additionally, it is splash and sweat resistant so the need for reapplication throughout the day is reduced. The Ultrathon range is endorsed by outdoor survival expert and long standing fan, Ray Mears. The Ultrathon range is available in a 60ml lotion offering extended protection of up to 12 hours, a convenient 125ml spray offering 8 hours protection and a 100ml pump spray providing up to 12 hours protection.

“SPECTACULAR HORSEMANSHIP, BREATHTAKING SPECIAL EFFECTS, A SHOW YOU CANNOT MISS”

PRESENTS

Summer Worming

H

ave your horses been on the same worming programme for a long time? You know you need to change and the simplest solution is to start adding some counts to your worming programme. When it comes to summer, worm control experts agree that worm egg counts are one of the most important tools for horse owners. Pfizer, makers of the Equest wormers, and Westgate Labs the worm count people, have been working together to help owners understand how to use worm counts. David Booth at Westgate explains: “It’s really easy to start using worm counts and summer is a great time to begin. Contact the lab for a free kit and return the sample. Results are returned quickly and qualified advisors can help with freely available advice.” Ben Lacey at Pfizer continues: “Worm egg counts are invaluable during the grazing season as they will indicate how many eggs each horse is contributing to the contamination of your pasture. Eggs hatch into worm larvae, so the higher the egg count the more larvae will be on the grazing . Regular worm counts can help you to target your worming treatments by only dosing horses with a significant worm burden, which will stop them from re-infecting the pasture for a period after the treatment. The horses with low egg counts are less likely to need a treatment.” Find Westgate Labs online: www.westgatelabs.co.uk, email info@westgatelabs.co.uk or join the wormy chat on Facebook.

Super studs

A growing number of barefoot horse owners are competing barefoot, and train the horse to jump in balance.

By Lucy Nicholas of online retailer The Saddlery Shop

W

ith the competitive season underway and the weather conditions unreliable, many riders are using studs to help them gain grip when jumping. Studs are screwed into ready-made holes in horseshoes, to give horses confidence on slippery going, and are also a psychological bonus for riders, knowing that the horse has more grip. Advice differs according to how many studs to use. Some people advocate using two studs per foot to keep the foot balanced or provide extra ‘anchorage’, while others say that one stud per foot allows the foot to pivot, therefore reducing sideways twisting of the fetlocks, particularly when turning fast upon landing. Some riders use a single stud with a blunt, square stud (sometimes known as a blank), on the inside of the fore shoe to keep the foot balanced. Many people advocate using two studs in each of the hinds, and just one in each front shoe, for the perfect combination. It is imperative that you seek advice from your farrier regarding your horse’s level of competition, and the venues you compete at, to make sure you choose the right number of studs for him.

7

Common jumping studs and uses 1. Fibrous indoor surface, or well-maintained grass jumping surface - standard jump stud. 2. Firm ground - long, slim, pointed stud. 3. Loose sand school - dome topped studs with wide profile, for grip.

7. Keep a T-tap in your kit for cleaning the thread. www. thesaddleryshop.co.uk stocks the Mark Todd Stud Spanner T-tap. 8. Keep studs in a secure container; to avoid rust, wrap them in a lightly oiled cloth. 9. Keep spanners, plugs, nails and T-taps together as a kit; we like the Mark Todd stud kit. 10. Clean and re-plug stud holes the day before a competition; do not wait until you get to a show only to find a stone has got jammed in. 11. Use the smallest studs you feel will do the job. 12. Rear stud holes should be positioned well towards the heel, to avoid over-reach damage. 13. Don’t leave your horse standing on firm ground with studs in. A growing number of barefoot horse owners are competing barefoot, without horse shoes, and thus without studs. They advocate that a little slipping on the ground surface is both natural and essential to the normal function of the forelimbs in absorbing concussion, and that they, as riders, focus on training the horse to jump in balance. Ask a farrier with barefoot experience, or a reputable barefoot trimmer, for advice on the matter. Visit www.thesaddleryshop.co.uk

4. Varying terrain, eg. crosscountry - pointed jump stud. 5. Slippery grass on top, firm underneath – a stud that’s wide at the top for grip, with a pointed lower section. 6. Boggy and deep ground - very large, uniformly wide studs for grip. 7. Hard ground - thin, pointed studs.

13 Top Tips for successful studding –

1. Keep the holes clear – it only takes a tiny stone to block a stud hole or damage the thread, so always keep your stud holes clean and filled with a stud hole plug, from the moment your horse is shod. 2. Stud hole plugs are available in shaped cotton wool, metal, felt, rubber or plastic variations. www.thesaddleryshop.co.uk stocks Stromsholm Felt Stud Hole Stoppers; simply push the felt stopper into the stud hole to help prevent grit, dirt and mud from damaging the thread. 3. Use a magnetic stud tray to prevent you from losing your studs in your bedding or on the yard. www.thesaddleryshop.co.uk stocks the Stablekit Magnetic Stud Tray; perfect for holding your studs, whether at the yard or at a show. 4. Under stud, rather than over stud – a little slip is better than a strain, due to too much ‘hold’ or anchorage! 5. Use a stud guard if you are studding the front shoes, to protect the horse’s belly. 6. Be careful when crossing hard surfaces to get into an arena when the horse is studded up – they will imbalance the horse, so it is best to dismount and lead. august 2012 Localrider 11

laire Sheehan and Suzanne Penston grew up with horses, as their mother, Helen, was already involved so riding seemed a natural step for them. Dad, Kevin, encouraged both the girls to ride as he felt it was good for them to have a hobby. However, Claire says: “He might wish it was a cheaper one now!” By chance an instructor at Pony Club asked if Claire, then aged eight, would like to ride an Exmoor pony in the show ring and that as they say was that! The family had suddenly become involved with showing and it wasn’t long before Suzanne followed her sister into the show ring.

performance specialist. 2001 proved to be a bumper year for Claire, as she also rode Llanarth Malgwin, a Welsh section D owned by Jane Weller, to second place at HOYS in the WHP class. Both Claire and Suzanne have continued to ride for the Filmer Family, showing ponies like Longhalves Golden Dagger and more recently Lemonshill Falcon, who is proving to be a highly successful show ring contender. Claire recalls a wonderful NPS Summer Championships when he went through the card winning every summer final and the much-coveted NFU Welsh section B breed class. He has already booked a return trip to HOYS in 2012 with a win at Ponies UK South (followed up with a win at The South of England Show) and Suzanne qualified him for the RIHS.

Tyson a champion in the show ring Suzanne has also built up some special show ring partnership with Claremont Benjamin owned by the family. The kindly Fell stallion gave Suzanne many special moments when he qualified for HOYS on a number of occasions and won The NPS Snuggy Hoods Finals. Suzanne will never forget the day she and Tyson (Claremont Benjamin’s stable name) qualified for Olympia at NPS Area 20 show: “When I was called forward it was amazing! And it caused lots of tears”. She is now looking forward to starting another young Fell pony, Townend Emperor, and although he has some big horseshoes to fill he looks more than up to the challenge. His

A third generation lead the way Now, ‘the girls’ are ‘grown-ups’ with children of their own, the third generation of the family has started showing and look set to be just as successful. Claire’s daughters, Jessica and Danielle, aged six and seven, are both competing in the Lead Rein classes. Jessica rides Waitwith Damsel and it won’t be long before she starts First Ridden classes. In the meantime her friend, Ellie Sedgewick, is competing on Damsel in this section. Hot on her sister’s heel is

Danielle with her Shetland, Briar Percules, as she is itching to go it alone in the ring soon. Phoebe, Suzanne’s five-year-old daughter, rides super Saint, Hallow Lilly Rhosyn and also has fun with Moomin the Dartmoor pony at home. All three are mad keen to head off to Pony Club - so any local branches in Sussex had better watch out! They also share the ambition of getting the chance to ride in an evening performance. Of course all five of ‘the girls’ know how much of their success they owe to Helen and Kevin. “We can’t thank them enough! They supported us as children and now as adults. They are the best babysitters, grooms and drivers you could ask for! We couldn’t do it or achieve the success we have without them!” say Suzanne and Claire.

Mrs Gina Kitchener worth recipient of the DAKS Award

Gina Kitchener receiving The friends of DAKS award, pictured with Mr Paul Diamond from DAKS and Cherry Michell, Chairman of the Pony Club

he friends of DAKS award was instigated by DAKS to recognise the many unsung volunteers who have quietly dedicated a lifetime of service and devotion within the Pony Club to the benefit of young people. This years’ very deserving recipient of the award was Mrs Gina Kitchener. Having been a Member of the Mid Surrey branch from the age of nine, Gina’s involvement within the branch has spanned an incredible five decades. In April 1988, Gina who by then had taken on the role of DC was informed that the branch would have to vacate their Pony Club venue. Using all her persuasive powers, Gina secured an alternative field in Walton on the Hill. Over the course of 23 years, supported by her committee, parents and friends of the Branch, Gina managed to transform this empty field into a most wonderful training facility for the increasing number of Members joining the Branch. Gina was keen to provide all the Members with an excellent training following the ethos of the Pony Club. Gina was very much looking forward to celebrating the Branch’s 80th Anniversary in 2011. Now a Grandmother of seven she was struck a very difficult blow regarding her health. Supported as always by her Husband Phillip, Gina continued to run the Branch throughout her gruelling treatment. However, at possibly her lowest ebb, more devastating news was on the way Gina was informed that the Mid Surrey Branch was to be made homeless again … the field was to be sold! Gina realised that the only way to secure the future of the branch was to purchase the field; the asking price was £480,000! At a time when most people would have thrown in the towel Gina launched into action. Working tirelessly, Gina had one year in which to raise the money and she did it. Gina led the campaign from the front, unwavering in her determination. Extraordinarily, she still continued to run the Branch and together with Philip turn up with all seven grandchildren and ponies in tow, whilst caring for her own ailing mother. The Mid Surrey Branch now has a permanent home in Walton on the Hills which will be a fitting and lasting legacy to a most incredible lady.

Dengie Organises Masterclass for Kelly Sixteen-year-old Kelly Jones, from Petworth, West Sussex, was thrilled to win a lesson with professional dressage rider Alice Oppenheimer, thanks to an exciting prize Kelly Jones and her draw organised by Dengie Horse Feeds as horse Jack were the part of its annual sponsorship of the Pony proud winners of a Club Winter League Championships. dressage lesson with Kelly, a member of the Cowdray Hunt Alice Oppenheimer branch, was invited along to Headmore Stud, in Hampshire – owned and managed by Alice and her mother, Sarah – for an intensive dressage tutorial on Jack, her handsome thoroughbred. Although Kelly competes in all Pony Club activities, she was keen to improve her average dressage scores and concentrated hard while Alice put the pair through their paces on both reins as they worked on walk, trot, canter, leg yields and shoulder-ins. “Kelly and Jack are a really nice combination,” said Alice. “Kelly needs to discipline herself a bit more to have a clear plan when schooling on the flat, but the exercises we did will help her focus and get Jack to step under himself more and working through his back. Kelly needs to maintain her contact so that Jack doesn’t poke his nose and I am sure their overall marks will improve.” The day was a wonderful opportunity for Kelly, who has her sights firmly on the BE100 at Iping later this month. “I am very grateful to Dengie,” she said. “I could really feel the difference in Jack and I will definitely work at home on the exercises Alice has taught me – and I will try to be more organised with my schooling. I’m sure Jack’s improvement on the flat will also help with our jumping.”

other of three Vanessa Percy is facing the challenge of a lifetime as she gears up to herd wild horses across the mountains, glaciers, volcanoes and lava fields of Southern Iceland. Vanessa, 35, works part-time at Holt & Wotton Structural Engineers, but on 18th August this year she will be trekking almost 200km to raise money for the British Horse Society. “I’ve never attempted anything like this before” says Vanessa. “I ride as often as I can but I’m going to be in the saddle for six to seven hours a day for almost a week, over terrain I can’t even begin to imagine! Danny my gypsy cob has been drafted in to help me get fit, much to his disgust!” The hard work will all be worthwhile for Vanessa if she succeeds in raising £2,000 for the British Horse Society. The work of the charity is something close to her heart as she has ridden since she was a small child, and horses are her passion. “The British Horse Society do so much,” Vanessa explains “not only are they responsible for training riding instructors and approving riding schools across the country, so that people can learn in a safe environment, they also have a fabulous welfare scheme, which is where the money raised will go. “Many horses and ponies are mistreated and live in distressing conditions in this country. The BHS are constantly working to educate horse owners and keepers, and improve horse welfare. They also work to educate people about diseases, such as Strangles, which is a notifiable disease in many European countries but not here.” You can sponsor Vanessa by visiting her online fundraising page on www. justgiving.com/ Vanessa-Percy

Fourteen-year-old, Oliver Martin’s first love is eventing. Over the last 18 months he has produced his young pony, Farrells Hill Lad, from BE 90 to BE Novice level. The combination have also been competing on the BE Pony Programme, producing a double clear at Oasby and clear cross country at Weston Park. As part of the event training the pair are registered British Showjumping and at the recent Kent Area Showjumping Festival held at Eaglesfield they entered the Foxhunter class (height 1.10cm in first round). There was field of about 38 junior riders jumping, many of whom jump in affiliated competitions on a regular basis. Only nine of the riders posted clear rounds, to go into the second round. Oliver was drawn to go first and went for a fairly fast clear. Having gained his clear, all he could do was sit and watch as one buy one the riders went in to beat the time and everyone who tried had a pole or two. Oliver and the seven-year-old, Farrells Hill Lad, won the class with the only double clear in the class. The best thing for Oliver was his trainer, BS Accredited coach Chris Moyce who was there to see it all.

Michelle Ayling sent in this picture of her two-year-old, traditional filly, Clockhouse Painted Lady. Owned by Michelle and her mother, Karen Daniels, It was taken at her first ever show, the RDA Open Show on 3rd June, where she won all three of her classes (Youngstock, Coloured and Cob) and went on to stand Overall In-hand Champion.

Caroline Barbour with Tilly and Eleanor Wheeler with Rummie, have been selected to represent England at the European Mounted Games, which are being held in Turin, Italy from 1st to 5th August. Both girls are keen members of the Romney Marsh Pony Club Prince Phillip Cup team and also ride in the Mounted Games Association of GB. The girls qualified, when they won the Under 12 British Pairs title at Uttoxeter Racecourse over the weekend of 9th & 10th June. (Both girls are now 12, but qualification is based on being under 12 on 1st January). They are trained by Julie Prodger of the Romney Marsh Pony Club and their parents. Good Luck in Turin and we look forward to reporting the results!

RO FEET Hoof Moist is an entirely natural product with a dual action - it improves hoof condition and acts as a hoof cosmetic. Research shows that traditional oil and grease applications can be detrimental to the health of the hoof, because both substances prevent the absorption of the very moisture essential for the maintenance of supple robust hooves. PRO FEET Hoof Moist is oil and grease free and especially formulated to sustain the moisture content of the hoof and allow natural fluctuation of moisture levels. The ingredients used to make Hoof Moist are of human cosmetic grade and the manufacturing process used in its production results in a smooth gel consistency to allow for even application and promote spreading characteristics. Hoof Moist also contains Teatree, which gives it a natural antiseptic quality. Hoof Moist is particularly useful throughout the dry summer months and also for the horse who has to spend prolonged periods on dry bedding, which draws moisture out from the hoof. Frequent application will provide the hoof care and the presentation important to that healthy groomed appearance. Available in a colour choice of black or natural. RRP: 500g: £6.95, 1kg: £11.50

Cracked, brittle hooves a problem?

And there’s more…

PRO FEET is unique. It provides nutritional support that targets Liver function. A healthy Liver is fundamental to healthy hoof growth. All too often the liver can become stressed which compromises its function, and this is turn, has detrimental effects on the health of the hoof. Feeding a blend of naturally sourced ingredients, scientifically verified to have antioxidant properties, will help achieve optimum liver function, thus supporting quality hoof growth. The hoof specific nutrients in PRO FEET work in synergy with and the naturally sourced antioxidant ingredients in the formula to provide a hoof supplement that out performs all those that came before.

Foetal sex determination in horses

VISIT OUR NEW UCKFIELD STORE (OPPOSITE TESCO)

20% OFF

With a gestation period of 11 months, knowing in advance the sex of your foal can be quite advantageous, especially if you are specifically hoping for a colt or a filly. Charlie Pinkham, Veterinarian at The Arundel Equine Hospital discusses the process further.

ALL SUMMER CLOTHING! Terms & condions apply. Offer expires 31st August 2012.

I

t is one of the hazards of the job that what vets consider normal conversation is often not appropriate for the dinner table. Eyebrows were rightly raised recently during a lovely evening when my discrete announcement to the girl sitting next to me that I was “soon to start sex testing again”, unfortunately coincided with a lull in conversation. Apologies to my hosts. Over the last few years (with the help of Huw Neal, Newmarket Equine Hospital) I have been working hard to increase my experience of foetal sex determination, to give it its proper name. It is an important management tool for breeders. The window of opportunity for testing occurs 63-67 days after the mare has been covered.

Added value

The technique has increased in popularity over the last five years and high value mares are now frequently offered at the sales with this information. Knowledge of the foetal sex allows breeders to make early informed choices about the future of their breeding program and gives useful information for financial planning. It can play a part in deciding if a mare should go to the sales and when at the sales it may influence estimated prices and reserves. On the other hand, if the broodmare is to be retained it can help breeders to make early decisions as to whether to sell the offspring or to keep them for racing. It can also contribute to decisions on the following year’s stallion choice.

99% accuracy

The technique involves finding the genital tubercle. This is the developing penis in the colts and the clitoris in fillies. It is very small, only 2-3mm, and finding it requires modern ultrasound equipment, plenty of practice and some patience. At around 50 -55 days of pregnancy the developing tubercle migrates to a position underneath the tail head in fillies and in front of the hind legs in colts. At 63-67 days of pregnancy the migration is complete, the foetus is relatively easily imaged and the tubercle is distinct, allowing the best opportunity to perform the examination. Experienced clinicians should be able to achieve more than 99% accuracy, with only about one in 20 mares requiring a second attempt. After 70 days of pregnancy imaging of the foetus becomes increasingly difficult and, although sex testing can still take place, the accuracy of the technique is reduced. Apart from the additional costs, the only drawbacks that I have encountered so far are the aforementioned embarrassment at dinner parties and to my dismay having told my sister about the technique she now won’t let me see her pregnancy scans. It seems that some people still just enjoy the surprise!

Laura Powell writes... It’s the height of summer and there’s a serious lack of eventing. All my plans have been ruined. I’m starting to wonder if we’ve all gone a bit soft and are spoilt with surfaced arenas and perfect turf. Of course I understand if the course is, like Badminton, underwater, but for heavy going I’ve got some whopper studs that haven’t been used for years, as everything seems to be cancelling instead. BCA cancelled with a few days notice, some were lucky and managed to re route to Stratford Hills in Essex. I wasn’t so fortunate and ended up at Felbridge British Showjumping (BS) on a very busy Saturday. At least Daisy got a trip out, she thoroughly enjoyed carting me round the 1m. Alf lost concentration in the 1.05m having the last two fences down and Spud jumped a lovely double clear - hooray! I was all set for Rackham, where a friend was planning to meet me to give me a hand. So I was up at the crack of dawn with a loaded lorry and two immaculate greys - Spud and Daisy. I was not the least bit impressed when I received a text at 6.56am, whilst on the M25, saying that the event had been abandoned! That’s no good to me I was up at 5.30am! I was home though in plenty of time to do all the mucking out. With all the cancellations everyone is bombarding those events that are running with enquiries, trying to squeeze late entries in, meaning it’s really tough to get a place. My next event isn’t until the end of July and I’m not sure where Spud will run next and if Daisy will get out at all! Last weekend I set of for my third BS show on the trot (might have to invest in some white breeches at this rate). We headed to Pyecombe with Spud and Alf to jump the Newcomers. This was Spud’s first go at this level and he was bold, just having an unlucky four faults. Alf meanwhile finally jumped his first double clear at this level and was very rideable. Now I need to start being a little more competitive and practise keeping him sane in a bigger stride. I have a summer full of Pony Club camps to teach at. Including Associates which should be interesting participating from ‘the other side’ as a helper rather than a camper. Also I filled that empty stable with a seriously cool Connemara X called Luna. She’s an overgrown pony at 15.1hh and only four-yearsold but she’s Irish and up for the craic! The idea is to produce her and sell her on, but she’s come on so well that we might have a go at the Lycetts 4 year old classes first!

Casey is no stranger to the pages of Localrider as in 2006 he won the Junior 80cm section of the Intro Leagues that we sponsored at the time, then ridden by Janet’s daughter ailsa. ailsa is now 20 and is reading Law at Exeter university, but before coming out of Juniors she had great fun jumping in British Novice, Discovery and Newcomers reaching the British Novice and Discovery second rounds. Club Shows offer ailsa the chance to still jump Casey in the holidays as long as she jumps at a different height to her mother. Janet bought the now 18-year-old Casey when he was four from his breeder in Horne in Surrey and she and ailsa have had an enormous amount of fun and success with him since. as well as being a great

jumping pony over coloured poles and across country, he has also proved himself in endurance competitions. Janet started by doing a 50mile competition around Windsor Park graduating to a three day competition over 150kms in Wales, the Red Dragon Festival of Endurance, where in 2009 they were in the winning team and finished second individually. Due to a virus Casey missed the 2010 season, but Janet said in 2011 he took first prize over the season, in the South East Endurance group, winning the andrew Reilly Shield for best registered native pony. Janet trains regularly with Sally Thurloway and describes her as ‘fantastic’, She told me that when she first started having lessons she couldn’t really point Casey at a fence and now they are nearly always in the ribbons.

Could You Be A British Showjumping Regional Champion?

T

he Regional Club Leagues within the South East are sponsored by Localrider Magazine and will be hosted at Wellington Riding and there is still a chance for you to be named as one of British Showjumping’s Regional Champions. There will be eight Championship Titles on offer, four for those competing on ponies and four for those on horses with a title in each section for 70cm, 80cm, 90cm and 1.0metre. In addition to a Regional Championship title there will also be rosettes, sashes, rugs and prizes to those who win the Championship classes on the day.

Still time to qualify

Club members who have been accruing league points throughout the year will be receiving their invitations to compete in their Championship class shortly. However, for those that haven’t obtained the right yet to automatic entry there is still the opportunity to qualify at the event via a ‘Golden Ticket’ qualifying class which will run across each of the four height categories within both Horse and Pony sections. You do not have to be a member to participate in the Golden Ticket class but you will need to become a Club Member if you wish to compete in the Championship Final. Club membership is just £30 for yourself and your horse/pony for year which entitles you to the benefits of Club Membership and inclusion on the regional league tables. Schedules will be available shortly, however if you would like to participate and want to know more beforehand please either contact the venue or contact Tasha Sewell on tasha.sewell@ britishshowjumping.co.uk

The Regional Leagues finished at the end of May for 2012 and the winners will be announced shortly once the grading has been finalised for the 2011-2012 leagues. For information please note that Regions are dictated by your postcode and not show venue. Further information in respect of Club Membership can be found on the British Showjumping website under ‘Membership’ at www.britishshowjumping.co.uk or by calling British Showjumping on 02476 698800 and asking for the Sport Team.

A flash noseband helps prevent a horse opening its mouth too wide

Noseband news I

By Stephen Biddlecombe of Stephens Leatherwork

sn’t it funny how nosebands come in and out of fashion? Maybe it goes hand in hand with the trends in bitting, or perhaps it is because a high profile rider is seen advocating a particular style! It is important to remember that nosebands are there for a purpose, rather than just to look a certain way; and many of us are guilty of keeping a particular noseband just because it is on the bridle we have bought – a good example of this is a flash noseband, which comes with many bridles these days. Make sure your noseband is right for the horse in question, and be sure to fit it carefully – it is better to have it too loose than too tight, generally, as in the latter case, it may rub or even disrupt the horse’s breathing. Here’s a list of the most common nosebands used by riders – Cavesson – this doesn’t have an actual action, and is just part of the bridle – in showing circles particularly, cavessons are used to enhance the horse’s appearance. A wide noseband will enhance an Irish Draught-type while a fine leather noseband will be more suitable to a Thoroughbred or Arab type horse. It should have one to two fingers’ width between the jaw and the leather. This is the only sort of noseband which should be used with a double bridle. The cavesson can also be used for attaching a standing martingale to, if you need to use one.

A slim cavesson is said to suit a finer equine head than a thicker, flatter version

The high ring grakle, as used by showjumper Gemma Paternoster, is effective at preventing the horse from crossing its jaw

Drop - this noseband seems to be a little out of fashion, currently – it is used to prevent the horse opening his mouth and evading the bit. The low pressure point in front, and pressure at the curb groove at the back, also aim to encourage a horse to lower his head. The top strap must lie on the bony part of the nose, not the muzzle - at least six centimetres above the nostrils is a good guide. The drop fastens below the bit and behind the jaw. The noseband should be fastened tightly enough to prevent the horse from opening its mouth and there should be one finger’s width between the strap and the horse’s face. Flash – this is a combination of a cavesson and drop, originally invented so a standing martingale could be attached to the cavesson part of the noseband. They allow flexibility, as the separate flash strap can be removed for less demanding ridden work. The flash helps prevent a horse opening his mouth too wide, and it also helps keep a jointed loose ring snaffle central in the horse’s mouth. The flash strap fastens below the bit, and needs to be fitted tightly enough to prevent the horse opening or crossing his mouth; it should have one finger’s width between the strap and the horse’s nose. Stephens manufactures a Drawtite Cavesson with Flash and Backpad, which includes an adjustable leather section to ensure and even pressure all round and a snug fit without pressure points – available at www.worldwidetack.com. Grakle – this strangely named noseband, said to be named after a hard-pulling Grand National winning racehorse, has a similar effect to a drop, but acts over a wider area of the face. It is also effective at preventing the horse from crossing his jaw. The grakle fastens higher on the head than a drop or flash noseband, and should have one finger’s width between the strap and the horse’s face. The leather circle where the sections ‘meet’ should be on the centre front of the nose, with the top straps just below the facial bones, to avoid rubbing. Allow at least a finger’s width between top and bottom straps and the horse’s jaw. In addition to the standard Grakle, a ‘high ring’ version is available, whereby the rings sit higher up the horse’s cheeks – Stephens’ high ring and standard Grackle are available at www.worldwidetack.com, as are several competition-specific nosebands that aid control. august 2012 Localrider 49

...In the Tack Room Take a stroll around any good saddler shop and there is an incredible range of leather items on sale these days. We have had a selection this month, from boots to bridles and stirrup leather to girths... JHL Pro Cavesson Bridle

Loveson Grakle Bridle

Manufactured in quality European leather with stainless steel fittings, this smart and understated bridle has raised detail on the noseband and browband and is supplied with rubber grip reins. Colours: Black or Brown Sizes: Pony, Cob or Full size RRP: £82.00 www.wefi.co.uk

The bridle comes complete with rubber reins. Colours: Black or Havana Sizes: Pony, Cob and Full RRP: £31.95 Tel: 01636 636 135

LR Comment: This is a lovely quality bridle, which smells like leather used to. It has a plain cavesson noseband, which is great as often these days bridles have flash nosebands as standard. It looks good and fitted well. I am using it every day, but would be happy to go cross country and hunting in it. The bridle comes with good strong rubber reins too.

LR Comment: It is quite unusual to be able to buy a straightforward plain bridle with a grakle noseband and if you are on a tight budget, this bridle offers a lot for the money, including rubber reins.

Cottage Craft Cambridge Bridle The Cambridge Bridle with rubber reins is new from the Sovereign leatherwork range by Cottage Craft. The padded snaffle bridle is great for a range of disciplines. Made from top quality selected vegetable tanned leather. This tanning process is totally eco-friendly, using natural ingredients to create a super, supple and durable. They didn’t need any wearing in and were great from the first time I tried them. They have worn well and haven’t appeared to stretch at all. I think they are well priced too, for the quality.

Ideal Saddle Company Ergonomic Girth

Padded Atherstone Girth from Caldene

The ergonomic girth is designed to aid with stability and reduce restriction behind the horse’s elbow. The soft leather hide that contacts with the horse’s skin undergoes a tanning process that increases the water repellency of the hide, whilst staying soft and malleable. Available as a hard top or soft top, with elastic or without. Colours: Black, Brown, Military, Ranch or custom colours on request All sizes are available to order. www.idealsaddle.com

The Padded Atherstone Girth is manufactured from a high quality, vegetable tanned leather which is eco-friendly and ensures the leather is extremely strong and supple. The leather used in making this girth is perfect for equestrian leatherwork, leaving a beautiful consistent finish and soft supple feel. Colours: Black and Havana Sizes: 32 inches to 60 inches RRP: £83.50 www.caldene.co.uk

LR Comment: This is an extremely well made girth. The leather is beautifully soft and padded on the side which goes next to the horse and firm, yet supple on the other. It is designed to maximise comfort the horse and I like the fact that there is elastic at both ends of the girth. I shall certainly be using this style of girth in the future. Good value for the quality too.

LR Comment: This is a smart, well made girth. It is perfect for any discipline including in the show ring. It is designed to be comfortable for the horse, yet hold the saddle securely.

Silver Crown Flash Bridle This bridle is new from French brand Silver Crown and now available through on-line retailers Shadow Horse. A new concept in bridle design, Silver Crown allow customers to mix and match to accommodate both the size of their horse’s head and also their requirements, ensuring that you get a bespoke made-to-measure bridle without the hefty price tag! Styled in beautiful quality English leather, this particular combination incorporates a ‘La Baule Headpiece’, which is softly cushioned padded throughout, to spread the pressure evenly over a larger area, without creating pressure points and enhanced well being. The ‘Flash Noseband Complete’ features a padded cavesson with the option to use with the flash attachment or without. The leather noseband has firm internal support, which encourages not only longevity in terms of performance and looks, but also offers continued comfort to the horse. The picture shows Flash Complete Noseband, La Baule Headpiece with Web Reins in Australian Nut. Full range of sizes and colours are available. RRP: £187.00 www.shadowhorse.co.uk Tel: 01628 857 466 LR Comment: Made from beautiful, quality English leather this bridle was ready to use as soon as it arrived. The leather felt like it had been oiled ready for use. At first it looked a bit complicated to put together, but it isn’t at all and the bridle allows complete flexibility, which is particularly good especially if you have a horse whose head is on the border line between sizes. I loved the La Baule Headpiece as this allows the even spread of pressure over the poll area, avoiding pressure points (great for using with bits, which apply poll pressure).

Mark Todd Leather Tendon & Fetlock Boots From the Mark Todd Deluxe Leatherwork Collection, these stylish boots are manufactured in fine, French leather with a neoprene lining and leather strike pads. Sold as a complete set, the high quality boots have wide elasticated strap fastenings with an additional leather strap and buckle on the tendon boots. Colours: Brown or Black Sizes: Cob or Full size RRP: £142.99 for the set Contact Westgate EFI on 01303 8722277 for stockists www.wefi.co.uk LR Comment: These boots are luxury in a bag. They are absolutely beautiful, made from lovely soft leather, which felt like it had been moulded for my horse the first time I used them. They have a neoprene lining and offer great protection. They are quick and easy to fit. They have their own carry case to keep them together and clean, when not being used. A definite one for the Christmas list!

Tekna Headcollar From the Tekna synthetic range, this practical headcollar is manufactured in hi-tech QUIK-CLEAN material which is designed to maximise performance, durability and comfort. The result is a headcollar that looks like real leather, but which is incredibly easy to clean and maintain. Features include stainless steel buckles and clip throat lash, while the Breakaway version incorporates a discreet replaceable safety tab on the headpiece. Colours: Black or Brown Sizes: Pony, Cob or Full Prices start at £22 for the standard headcollar. The Tekna Breakaway Headcollar costs £30.50, the replacement breakaway tabs cost £2.60 Contact Westgate EFI on 01303 872277 for stockists www.wefi.co.uk LR Comment: Something a bit different! This is a quirky headcollar, at first glance it looks leather, but it isn’t, which is perfect for using this year, with the constant torrential downpours. It looks smart and I like the padding around the noseband and head piece.

Tack Check During the busy competition season, it’s easy to forget about your tack, but as an essential part of your competition kit, your tack needs just as much attention as your horse! Chloe Bernard, Commercial Director of On-line retailer shadow Horse, stockists of premium sheepskin brand Fleeceworks, technical saddle pads Ogilvy Equestrian and deluxe bridle brand silver Crown gives her tips for caring for your tack… “When you are busy competing, it’s easy to overlook your tack, after all, filling out entry forms and concentrating on your horse’s performance under saddle take priority. However taking a little time out to clean and check over your tack can really help towards a winning performance in the ring or arena. One key factor to remember is that in the process of getting your horse fit, he may well have changed shape, so you may want to have your saddle checked during the course of your season. Remember, if your horse is uncomfortable, he won’t perform to his best, so it’s worth getting a check to ensure this isn’t the case. at shadow Horse we have a great selection of saddle pads designed to help your saddler with the fit of your saddle when your horse changes shape. alongside our sheepskin range, Fleeceworks, our Ogilvy Equestrian Half Pad uses friction free technology combined with high grade memory foam and optional removable memory pad foam shims to help ‘bridge’ the gap with seasonal changes in shape. If things aren’t going well in the competition arena, it may be worth reviewing your choice of tack. Experimenting with new bits can help with horses which are ‘busy’ in their mouths, however you’ll need to school your horse repeatedly at home before trying anything new at a competition! there are a few companies offering

Sparkling clean

‘Bit Bank’ services, which allow you to hire a bit before you buy. We’ve sometimes found that combining a milder bit and a different noseband can be better for your horse than a stronger bit, so ‘Bit Banks’ are worth a call to help you find the right bit for your horse before taking the plunge and buying. We have horse owners come to us because they find their horses are ‘unsettled in the contact’. some horses can show discomfort because of an ill-fitting bridle, so if this is the case, it’s worth checking your bridle thoroughly and experimenting with different styles of headpieces and nosebands. Our silver Crown bridles have several different styles of headpieces and nosebands and all of them are softly padded to ensure the horse’s comfort. Our headpieces are either generously cut away from the horse’s ears, or wider over the poll to relieve pressure and our nosebands come in various styles to give further help to those horses more ‘traditional’ cuts of bridle don’t suit. During the competition season, you’ll probably invest as little time as possible cleaning your tack, however you should take your tack apart and clean it thoroughly at least once a week. this is important to thoroughly remove all grease and dirt build-up, to clean underneath buckles and also to check for any wear and tear. Checking for wear and tear is vitally important from a safety prospective: the last thing you want if you are going cross-country or in the jump off is for your stirrup leather to break! By checking over your tack regularly you can keep an eye out for any damaged stitching or leather wear and get it repaired before it becomes a problem. as temperatures rise, it’s inevitable that your horse will sweat, so make sure that again you

Chloe Bernard, Commercial Director of On-line retailer Shadow Horse has some great advice for the competition season

clean tack, saddle cloths and girths regularly to avoid any skin issues. sheepskin, even more than lambskin, has amazing wicking properties, allowing the sweat to be drawn away from the horse’s body, as well as offering excellent cushioning for high impact disciplines, such as jumping and dressage, where the rider has prolonged or high contact with the horse’s back. Finally, if it’s time to take the plunge and buy new tack, try and buy the best you can afford and always choose good quality British or European leather tack. We have personally tried and tested all of our products and believe that while quality doesn’t always come cheap, low quality leather is a false economy and as the age old saying goes ‘Buy cheap, buy twice’, that’s why at shadow Horse we believe you only need to buy once! good luck with your competition season!”

This month we have also been busy testing products to help keep out tack looking its best with that all important show ring sparkle...

From Darley to Dressage FEATURE

Over the last four months we have been featuring Emma Clarke as she shares her progress with her ex-racehorse, Lexcen. Following on from their success at the Hickstead Dressage Championships, this issue sees them testing out the show ring.

Pictures by Spidge Photography

J

une was a quiet month for myself and Lex. Work was particularly busy which meant Lex had a bit of time off after Hickstead. In between I have been schooling, once again sharpening up my transitions and working on Lex’s suppleness through lateral work. I’ve also upped our hacking which has been an enjoyable break from the school. I managed to get to a Thoroughbred and Retired Racehorse Association (TARRA) qualifying show in July at Crockstead in East Sussex. The weather again was up to its old tricks and despite setting out with good weather behind us there were sporadic periods of rain, hail and wind. I had specifically chosen to go to Crockstead as the judges would be riding, something Lex is not used to. Lex was particularly spritely in the go round in both classes and the weather had made the going a little sticky. The TARRA ridden class received a good level of entries and despite some playful leaps, Lex and I were pulled in fourth for the judge to ride. Lex gave the judge a better ride than me that day and was pulled in second in the final placing, gaining a TARRA ticket to Equifest. The Equifest/Balanced Horse Feeds riding horse class was full of quality riding horses both large and small. Lex gave the judge a good ride, but unfortunately due to the strong competition we were out of the placings. I did however get some useful feedback from the judge, which will give me some things to go away and work on. July is looking very busy with another TARRA qualifying show in Essex and my first affiliated dressage competition at Bedgebury. I also have a couple of lessons in between with Andy Ford, who I am sure will put me through my paces! Until next time….

Emma and Lexcen competing in the TARRA class at Crockstead, they finished second, qualifying for Equifest

PS Area 20 Summer Show managed to buck the trend of the 2012 show season and was blessed with a dry June day for the popular event held at the South of England Showground. With a number of quality horses forward the Supreme Championships were closely fought, with some tough judging involved. Rotherwood Dancing Star, who is more accustomed to success in the Ridden Show Pony classes, delighted connections by winning the Frogpool Manor Tea Rooms Supreme In-hand Championship. The five-year-old mare, owned by the Jago Family, from Horsham in West Sussex, was show by seventeen-year-old Georgia Jago, who also won the Aquilas Stud Young Handler Championship. The on form Lemonshill Falcon added yet more honours to his CV by standing Hawkins Smith In-hand Native Champion and Overall Reserve Supreme of Show. The Welsh section B stallion, owned by the Longhalves Stud, has qualified for both HOYS and RIHS for the second year running and stood Supreme In-hand Champion at Lincoln County. Four generations of breeding came together for Leigh Iliffe as she watched her twoyear-old, Nutwood Mimic, claim the In-hand Local Supreme Championship. By stud stallion, Trifolio, and out of Nutwood Impressionist the eye catching chestnut showed off his free flowing paces to charm judge Carole Richards. Although only lightly shown, he has already notched up some impressive wins at the National Hunter Show, where he won both the hunter and sports horse yearling classes, and stood Reserve Champion Best British Bred. It was first time lucky (and thanks to a mannerly and polished performance) in the Walstead Mini Supreme Championship when Zara Clark-Jones rode Cockwood Fabin Steadman to victory. It was both the pony and riders first time competing off the lead rein and their win put a grin on the whole of Team Harvey’s faces, but the brightest smile of all was Zara’s, that increased by ten watts when she saw the flower garland sash she had just won! Coming a very close second was Digby Shepherd and his Shetland pony, Carmilo Magician, who was Mini WHP Champion. Birthday Girl, Eloise Van Praagh and Jobex Chitty Chitty Bang Bang were awarded the PJ Skips Limited Supreme Ridden Championship. Judges commented on the Lead Rein Show Hunter Pony’s “perfect manners and true to type stamp”. Anna Martin also received a very nice birthday present from her pony, Fossway Flutter, when they finished Reserve in the Localrider Magazine Local Supreme Championship. Celebrate the launch of Jacksons Equestrian Solutions and WIN a year’s supply of shavings JACKSONS LAUNCHES PREMIUM RANGE OF STABLES AND FIELD SHELTERS

J

acksons Fencing is celebrating the launch of Jacksons Equestrian Solutions - a new dedicated range of premium stables and field shelters. Jacksons has been producing quality, durable equestrian timber fencing for 65 years and the company is now applying the same standard of excellence to its portfolio of timber equestrian buildings, which like their fencing, is supplied with a unique 25-year guarantee.

Built to your specification

Because Jackson designs and manufactures all its products in-house, the company is able to tailor the build of stables and field shelter to accommodate any special requirements. Stables can be provided on skids (no planning permission required) or as a permanent fixture, field shelters are supplied in a mobile format only. So whether you want a standard run of boxes or an unusual combination of sizes / layout, Jacksons can provide a quality equestrian solution!

Product features

• Pitched roof constructed from attractive green corrugated profile sheeting (galvanised and coated) • Roof lined with sterling board (added insulation / prevents condensation) • Guttering and overhang as standard • Constructed from 35mm acoustic boards – no need for ply lining • Internal partition walls same thickness and specification as exterior walls • Galvanised anti-chew strip on all stable doors as standard • Three grills inset windows • Stainless steel bolts / fixings (standard bolt top, kick bolt below) • Timber threshold • Timber boxing around pipe work (optional) • Talk grill / anti weave grill (optional)

Jacksons Professional Rider Team Yard appeal balanced with superior build

Finding a stable or field shelter which offers ‘yard appeal’ – but which will also survive the wear and tear associated with horses - is a tall order. All Jacksons equestrian buildings are constructed using 35mm acoustic timber boards which provide almost double the thickness of boards used by competitor brands. Not only does this deliver a sturdy, robust construction that is 100% fit for purpose, it also means the stables and field shelters offer excellent insulation qualities, so horses stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer. You may also find that the acoustic properties in the boards will help to keep the neigh(bours) happy!

Unbeatable durability

Jacksons Equestrian Solutions products are crafted from timber which has undergone the famous Jakcure treatment. This means that, unlike any other stable or field shelter on the market, there is total peace of mind courtesy of the 25-year guarantee against all wood boring pests and all forms of wet and dry rot. As a result, the investment you make to purchase a new stable or field shelter represents a really low lifetime cost and excellent value for money!

Low maintenance

Welcome news to any busy horse owner, the Jacksons Equestrian Solutions range of stables and field shelters are very low maintenance. There is no need to reapply any additional wood treatment to protect the timber year on year because the Jakcure process ensures the preservative is forced deep into the heart wood. So less time maintaining, more time to spend with your horse!

Jacksons is working with an elite team of high profile equestrian athletes from the world of dressage, eventing and show jumping. International Show Jumper Guy Williams, International Dressage Riders Emile Faurie and Hannah Biggs, 3 Day Event Rider, Liz Halliday and former Dressage Personality of the Year and International Dressage Rider Anna Ross-Davies, are all keen supporters of the Jacksons brand.

esigning and creating your own yard may seem like an exciting prospect, and the opportunity to tailor every last detail to meet your needs is very beneficial for the comfort of you and your horse. Allowing enough preparation time is essential when creating the perfect yard and with over 90 years experience leading timber stable manufacturer Scotts of Thrapston offers the following guidelines for creating your ideal yard.

Location & access It is important to have easy access to the

muckheap, water, feed and tack room. And remember to consider easy access for deliveries or visits from the farrier or vet. Site security is also paramount.

Building a yard from scratch with Scotts of Thrapston

Planning regulations It is always best to assume you will need planning permission, as failure to secure the correct permissions will cause problems when you come to sell. It is always beneficial to seek the advice of a reputable company. The planning process will take eight weeks so allow at least three to four months for the design and planning stage. Design The importance of a professional design should not be underestimated as it can assist with obtaining planning permission and ensure the future expansion of the yard is not restricted. The first design considerations surround how many stables are required and what they are to be used for. Thoughtful positioning of feed rooms, hay stores, and muck heaps will make the yard more practical. Check if the company you are working with undertakes plumbing work – you may need to arrange these elements of the build elsewhere if not. Budgeting A common pitfall when planning a build is not

taking all the potential figures into account; when installing timber loose boxes, don’t forget to add in the ground works, drainage, electricity supply and fittings, as examples.

Materials The specification of your stables will depend on your

budget, but bear in mind they must be strong and durable. Timber stables are generally preferred over bricks, due to horses’ safety, and kick boards can be fitted on the lower half of the stable wall for extra protection. Timbers should be pressure impregnated as this provides a minimum of 30-year protection against insect attack and rot.

Ventilation The right type of airflow is key as poor ventilation can adversely affect a horse’s respiration and quality of life. Ventilation at eaves level, to the rear and on the ridge is key. To avoid drafts, aim to position stables away from adverse winds.

Dimensions and fittings There are optimal standards in

terms of box sizes and heights, but it is generally recommended that the average sized horse has a minimum of a 12ft x 12ft stable, (between 9ft and 11ft high), with a 4ft wide doorway.

Connecting mains water and electricity Connecting to existing mains water and electricity supply isn’t as complicated and daunting as you may think, but do always use certified engineers. Your construction company should complete this work for you. Give Your Horse the XP Factor

S

UPAlyx -a unique supplement range specially formulated for horses and ponies to provide selected feed nutrients, minerals, vitamins and specific feed additives designed to help maintain and support equines in optimum condition whether at rest or in work. Available in great, cost saving 12.5kg blocks for groups of horses or smaller 3kg individual stable licks they are amazing value for money. Trace minerals are essential in the horse’s diet and the trace elements that have typically been shown to require supplementation are, Copper, Cobalt, Zinc, Iodine, Iron, Manganese and Selenium. Horses that are grazing freely will usually find these elements in their natural foraging behaviour. However for many horse owners or proprietors of large equestrian facilities/yards long hours of turnout in ample grazing is a rare commodity and even if the turnout appears to be satisfactory there are many cases of the essential minerals being missing. Deficiencies occur more frequently than most horse owners would realise. This can lead to under performance by the horse manifesting itself in many different ways such as, reduced growth rates for young stock, poor hooves, coat and skin, loss of feed efficiency , weight loss, gut problems and compromised immune function . Protein is also a primary nutrient needed for the formation and repair of muscle tissue and is found in all SUPAlyx products. Important for young, growing and working horses and to help lactating mares produce quality colostrum.

Great value Stable Blocks SUPAlyx have created a range of field and stable licks designed to help horse owners keep their animals in top condition. Ideal for the busy multi horse owner and large establishments such as rescue centres, studs, racing yards and riding schools they ensure the horse is getting all the nutrients in one simple easy to feed tub. Individual blocks for each stabled animal (3kg) or large sharing blocks (12.5kg) for young stock or horses living out, SUPAlyx really are the most cost effective way of keeping your horse healthy. No need for additional powders or feed supplements – as there are four varieties of Supalyx all of which contain Diamond V XPLS Yeast Culture: An exclusive natural yeast product giving probiotic benefits, it has been proven to improve hind gut fermentation and helps to maintain a healthy digestive system. SUPAlyx Horse & Pony ensures peak condition and is designed to be fed all year round to supply the essential nutrients which may be deficient or missing from pasture or forages . SUPAlyx Horse & Pony Easy Breather has a carefully selected blend of eucalyptus, menthol and plant extracts . To help maintain a healthy respiratory system, especially when stabled or in hard work. SUPAlyx Horse & Pony Nimble has selected supplements to help maintain healthy joints, for optimum mobility and free moving action. SUPAlyx Horse & Pony Garlic with additional garlic to help repel biting insects and contribute to natural well being. Feed all year round but especially in the summer months for its natural fly repellent properties. One of the best value stable and pasture licks available on the market the 12.5kg SUPAlyx blocks retail from £16.50-£19 and with each block suitable for groups of five horses then it really is a cost saving measure that will benefit your horse. The 3kg licks are £5.00 for Supalyx Horse & Pony and £5.50 for the other three varieties. Nutritional support for the Summer Feed news

a

t this time of year few of us really worry about what to feed our horses as there is generally plenty of grass to keep them happy. For most horses in average work, grass will generally satisfy them and we continued to feed a full concentrate ration, we would simply be inviting problems such as weight gain, temperament issues and possibly even laminitis. However, we do need to consider the implications of the grass based diet, and ask ourselves if in fact it does fulfill the requirements of the working or competition horse over summer? Pasture – what does it offer your horse? By eating only grass could your horse be missing out? We must be mindful of what our horse’s summer diet is not offering. unless your horse is lucky enough to have access to good old fashioned pasture (often referred to as “ley”), it is most likely he is kept on modern managed farming grassland. the drawback with this type of grazing is that there is little variety - there are normally just one or two species of grass, typically Perennial Rye grass and timothy, and possibly a legume such as clover. What we must remember is that our horses evolved in the wild, where a huge variety of plants, including a wide a range of grasses, shrubs and herbs, were available to them and they could instinctively chose which they needed to give them all the vitamins and minerals they required to keep healthy. So should we be supplementing our horse’s summer diet? a broad based vitamin and mineral supplement will ensure that your horse has everything he needs alongside that which is provided by grazing. However, for those horses and ponies who are kept on restricted grazing for such reasons as they are prone to weight gain and/ or laminitis, the situation is quite different. Not only are the obtaining very little nutritional value from their limited grazing, their need for nutritional support is increased to help them with their compromised health… for example they need to keep their hooves as strong and healthy as possible, so the need for hoof specific nutrients is greater. If you are planning a busy competition schedule for your horse this summer, a broad based supplement that includes probiotics or yeast which will work as a concentrated balancer and help to maintain fit condition would be a good choice. Feeding a

NAF Superflex Superflex has full veterinary approval. The unique ‘totally natural’ formula has been developed by vets using pharmaceutical grade ingredients, including nutrients proven to support joint health and flexibility, supported by a unique combination of powerful, naturally sourced ingredients which are ‘scientifically verified’ to have antioxidant properties. The antioxidant content sets Superflex apart from other joint supplements. Why? The antioxidants effectively ‘mop up’ the excess toxins that may accumulate around the joint and safely excrete them from the system. It must be remembered that often minor strains and traumas, which occur as part of daily work and training, often become a more serious issue due to the proliferation of toxins around the area. Superflex is available in Liquid or Powder. www.nafuk.com

concentrated balancer rather than large amounts of cereals for additional energy is a much easier and more natural option it can be simply fed with a small amount of additional fibre, such as alfalfa or chopped dried grass, to provide the extra energy needed, whilst not adding any additional stress on the gut. If additional concentrated energy is required don’t discount simple oats. a traditional horse feed, good quality oats actually provide far more fibre than most cereals, and therefore should provide good quality energy for stamina. Sweat losses… Perhaps the most obvious nutrient requirement for summer is to replace the salts lost in sweat. this is an issue for all horses but particularly those being ridden and worked regularly. sodium chloride, (i.e. normal salt) is the most important and should be supplemented daily year round. Research has shown that salt is the one nutrient that horses will actively seek out and selfsupplement. therefore a salt lick available at all times in the stable and field will allow your horse to take what he needs. Once you increase the level of exercise the horse is doing and also as the weather warms up, you should upgrade from basic salt to giving electrosalts, as these provide all the essential body salts, ie. sodium, calcium, potassium, magnesium and chloride. Failure to replace these body salts can affect the thirst mechanism, thus leaving the horse prone to dehydration. Finally, don’t forget your own electrolyte requirements! If you’re at a show all day and want to stay on top of your game, taking an isotonic sports drink to replace your own lost body salts, rather than just grabbing a fizzy drink, will ensure your reactions and body strength remain at their peak throughout the day. Your Questions Answered This month we have answered a variety of feed related questions. Remember if you have a specific feed question do contact the leading feed companies via email or their telephone help lines. My mare absolutely loves her Horslyx and looks and feels really well on it, but she has a tendency to get over enthusiastic with her hooves during use! This habit means we have the occasional broken tub. Is there any way I can solve this problem without taking her beloved Horslyx away?

A

Dr Cliff Lister, nutritionist at Horslyx says: Some horses love Horslyx so much that they can become very enthusiastic when enjoying their lick, occasionally leading to damaged tubs. However we now offer the perfect solution with our brand new 15kg Lick Holder designed for use in the stable or field. This means you can give your horse all the benefits of Horslyx in a unique floor feeder that is tough against wayward hooves! The re-usable 15kg Lick Holder has been trialled against kicks and knocks and allows your horse to enjoy Horslyx safely without the risk of broken packaging. The palatable, nutrient rich lick contains optimum levels of the vitamins, minerals and trace elements required to maintain peak health and condition for all horses and ponies, along with anti-oxidants, a healthy hooves package and high oil content. Using the new 15kg Lick Holder means you can feed the cost effective, weatherproof lick with peace of mind that you are balancing the deficiencies found in forage and grazing, and once finished you can simply replenish with another 15kg Horslyx, or use it as a general floor feeder for any of your animals. Horslyx is available in Original, Garlic, Respiratory and Mobility formulas, in both 5kg and 15kg tubs, enabling owners to provide targeted nutrition from just 36p per day. The brand new, re-usable 15kg Lick Holder costs just £17.99. For more information visit: www.horslyx.com or tel: (01697) 332 592.

Q

I have a good doer who requires very little feed but I want to ensure I am still feeding sufficient nutrients? What would you recommend?

A

For horses and ponies that have a tendency to be overweight ReadyMash from the Soft ‘n’ Soak Range is very useful as it provides the essential vitamins, minerals and trace elements required for overall health and vitality whilst helping keep energy levels to a minimum. Horses placed on restricted diets will often bolt their feed, swiftly finishing off their ration within minutes. ReadyMash takes just five minutes to soak to expand into a very soft textured mash which will help slow down the rates of digestion. This is extremely palatable, especially for horses that struggle to chew and digest traditional concentrates. With high fibre levels that encourage slow rates of digestion throughout the hindgut it is particularly valuable for horses requiring a diet that is sympathetic on the digestive system, providing an excellent source of slow release energy from the structured fibre, making ReadyMash ideal for everyday feeding. Q

Why should I give my horse feed from a Fodder Solutions system, and isn’t barley dangerous?

A

Liam McGreevy from Fodder Solutions answers: Hydroponically sprouted barley has several benefits which can improve your horse’s condition and performance. After spending six days in the Fodder Solutions system, the fresh sprouted mat is ready to feed, and as it is a live feed it is packed with live enzymes, it has changed from acidic to alkaline, and the nutritional format has converted from complex to basic. These factors improve digestive performance, and result in more efficient uptake of the available nutrition. Our customers have commented on how their horses have improved since switching to feed from a Fodder Solutions system. Feedback has varied from improved coat condition right through to comments that it helps conditions such as tying up and hormonal mares. The feed has low levels of starch which are believed to help with these conditions. Barley is harmless as it converts from complex starch based nutrition in the grain to basic protein based nutrition in the sprout. For further information please visit www.foddersolutions.co.uk

Q

With all the grass around at the moment I am worried about my daughter’s pony getting laminitis, as he puts on weight easily. What can I give him so that I know he is getting a balanced diet without the risk of laminitis?

A

Feeding over-weight horses and ponies or those that are good doers can be a real struggle. By feeding Blue Chip Lami-light to your daughter’s pony you can ensure that he will be getting a nutritionally balanced diet without the risk of unwanted weight gain. As with all of the balancers in the Blue Chip range, Lami-light is whole-cereal and molasses free, making it very low in sugar and starch. Lami-light contains all the essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients that your daughter’s pony requires on a daily basis, along with a probiotic and prebiotic for optimum gut health. Lami-light also contains a complete hoof and respiratory formula, eliminating the need for additional supplements, along with generous levels of magnesium which not only help to keep horses and ponies relaxed and settled, but have been shown to help reduce fatty deposits, common in over-weight or laminitis prone horses and ponies. www.bluechipfeed.com

Blue Chip Karma

Blue Chip Joint RLF

Blue Chip’s scientifically advanced liquid Karma is proven to be amazingly effective on a wide range of horses and ponies, producing consistent improvements in temperament, trainability and performance, without compromising alertness. Used by many professionals including 2010 HOYS Supreme Champion Katie Jerram, who uses Karma on many of her horses including her Lightweight Ladies Hunter, Dunbeacon. Katie swears by Karma and says “I’ve only taken Dunbeacon to HOYS once before, and he always got upset by having to stand for a long time. You can protect your horse’s joints by using a high quality joint supplement such as Blue Chip Joint RLF. this will help to ensure your horse’s joints are nourished and protected. Joint problems can often occur from excessive activity on hard ground; this can lead to the production of poor quality synovial (joint) fluid. the joint relies on this fluid for lubrication and protection from wear and tear ensuring the longevity of the limb. Blue Chip Joint RLF can help maintain the viscosity of synovial fluid. To find out more contact Blue Chip on 0114 266 6200 or visit www.bluechipfeed.com
