Safe Kids Springfield, led by Mercy Injury Prevention, is a group of individuals from several different organizations dedicated to reducing unintentional childhood injuries. We achieve this through education, advocacy, research, safety device distribution, and public awareness.
HOME SAFETY TIPS TRAVEL SAFETY TIPS
Always supervise young children around water.
Test smoke alarm batteries every six months.
Ensure babies sleep alone, on their backs, & in a crib.
Use safety gates and window guards to prevent falls.
Store all medications out of reach, including everyday items like vitamins & purses.

In the winter, remove big puffy coats before securing harness straps, & place the puffy coat backwards on the child if concerned about warmth.
In the car seat, straps should be snug & flat, chest clip at armpit level.
Car seats, when installed, should not move more than one inch from side to side. Every occupant needs to buckle up when riding & driving a vehicle.

PLAY SAFETY TIPS
Biking injuries are the leading cause of ER visits for children ages 5–14. Helmets reduce severe brain injury risk by 88%, yet fewer than half of children consistently wear them.
Dress Smart: Wear closed-toe shoes that stay securely on feet. Avoid headphones to stay alert to traffic & surroundings.
Ride Right: Always ride with traffic, staying to the far right. Obey traffic signals.
Be Seen: Wear bright or reflective clothing to increase visibility when in low light. Stay Alert: Teach kids to make eye contact with drivers before crossing streets. This ensures they are seen!
Check Equipment: Make sure bikes are the right size, brakes work properly, & tires are inflated.
