Nationwide, private school attendees account for 10% (approximately 4.7 million) of school aged students. That equates to millions of families that have chosen to find their own educational path. A path that provides flexibility, community and opportunities that may not be found in their local public school. So what exactly are these families getting?
One of the biggest benefits of private education is the flexibility families have to customize their child’s education. Private schools offer families the chance to select educational environments that align with their values, beliefs, and learning preferences. Whether you are looking for a faith based school, or something more secular, STEM based curriculum or classical, high tech, low tech or anything in between, private schools offer a wide variety of philosophies and models to choose from. This means you aren’t just choosing a school that fits your family’s values, you are choosing a community and friendships with people that share those same values.

Written By: Missy Kaiser Principal at Gloria Deo Academy
Private schools aren’t just flexible in their philosophy, private schools also offer more flexibility in scheduling. This flexibility can be a great benefit for families with complex schedules. For example our private school is a hybrid model which means students go to school 2 or 3 days per week and school at home the days they are not on campus. This has been a great fit for our family considering my husband’s work schedule. Having more flexibility with our home days allows him to spend time with our kiddos that wouldn’t be possible in a traditional 5 day a week school. In addition to hybrid and 5 day a week options, some area private schools even utilize more of a balanced model where students attend class for 6 weeks then have a week off. This is a great option for families that like to travel or those who have students that need more regular breaks from school. In private education, scheduling is just another aspect that can be personalized to meet a family’s needs.
In addition to the flexibility that private schools offer, most private schools are known for their outstanding academics. Smaller class sizes and high quality, dedicated teachers allow students to thrive academically and socially. Depending on the private school you choose, your child can enjoy strong academics without having to sacrifice on extra curricular activities. In our area, we have private schools with state qualifying sports teams, nationally ranked speech and debate teams and award winning music programs. Many private schools also offer drama productions and a variety of after school clubs to choose from.
One of the lesser-known benefits of private education is the growing partnership between colleges and private schools. Many private schools now offer dual-credit programs, participate in the A+ program, and even offer exclusive college tuition discounts. Our private school, for example, has partnerships with 2 local colleges that each offer a 50% tuition discount, just for being a graduate of our private school.
So if your family is looking for more flexibility, curriculum and community that align with your values, and benefits that last for years to come, you might just find what you are looking for in one of your local private schools.
