FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome to LocalReach Community Magazine... March is a pretty busy month this year. We have St David’s Day, St Patrick’s Day, International Women’s Day, Spring Equinox, Mothering Sunday, Palm Sunday and Good Friday. There will be the second Blue Moon of 2018 (when two full moons fall in one month) on 31 March and don’t forget the clocks go forward on Sunday 25 March. And if that wasn’t enough, once again the month is packed with music and art, charity events and community activities. It’s time to get out and enjoy all that this wonderful city has to offer. So, roll on spring and those longer, lighter days

Friday 2, 9, 16, 23 March: For many centuries the ‘Way of the Cross’ has been a tradition of following every step of Christ’s journey, from his condemnation by Pontius Pilate to the time when his lifeless body is laid in the tomb. At the Cathedral, the Stations of the Cross make a Jerusalem for us where we are and we too can follow the Way of the Cross. On Fridays during Lent at 12 noon, visitors are invited to be led from station to station by one of the Cathedral clergy and at each station there is a time of meditation and an act of devotion. A guide is available for those who wish to follow the Stations of the Cross independently. www.wellscathedral.org.uk

THE COSMOS IN STONE Saturday 3 March: This slideshow talk by Tom Bree will investigate the influence of cosmology in the design of Wells Cathedral. The talk will look at the underlying geometric design of the ground plan of Wells Cathedral and the way in which it embodies a Jerusalem-centred cosmological symbolism that is still used today in the symbolic layout of a Freemason lodge room. Gothic Cathedrals are often looked upon symbolically as architectural images of the Bible). So to enter into such a cathedral is to ‘walk among the stars’.

How to shrug off shoulder pain

Based in the heart of Somerset, we undertake funerals, funeral planning and complementary services to families and individuals across the region. Our business has been going for almost 2 years, but while we remain the newest funeral directors in Wells, we are proud to boast that our experience goes back almost 50 years! Our goal is to make sure you have the funeral package that suits your needs, wants and budget and with our plans starting from just £1,595, we are confident we will have exactly what you require. We will help you through every aspect of the planning stage, from helping choose the style of coffin, to the type of funeral, including burial, cremation or even a Green funeral. Wells Funeral Services are proud to recommend Golden Leaves Funeral Plans as an effective way to manage the cost of your funeral service. Golden Leaves provide an outstanding service; they keep your money safe and protected and are regulated by the financial services act. In addition to our Funeral Packages and Plans, we can also assist with Will Writing, Lasting Power of Attorney and Probate. And for those looking to spread the cost, Wells Funeral Service can also offer finance packages to suit all budgets. Alternatively, you can find all the information online at www.wellsfuneralservice. co.uk Our priority is your peace of mind.

Your local award winning funeral director! Read what our customers say about us... Rod was very prompt in seeing me after my initial phone call. He conducted the whole funeral nightmare with friendly empathy, but with professionalism throughout. I would recommend his services to everyone. There was no sales talk only good advice and very reasonable prices. Shirley F.

The cause is the formation of calcium deposits in the shoulder tendons. These grow from old scar tissues and gradually increase in size and number. This is not a common condition and is best diagnosed through x-ray or ultrasound. It tends to happen more to women - and it can be stubborn and worsen over time.

Restoring a Rococo Frame The Netherlands, during the seventeenth century, experienced an economic and social boom later known as the Dutch Golden Age. The Eighty Years War, characterising this period, ended with the seventeen provinces gaining independence in 1648. Economic, scientific and artistic progress continued on under the Dutch Republic. Painting at this time retained many characteristics of the Baroque movement, particularly naturalism. The prosperity of the times brought an increase in wealthy middle-class patrons with a taste for pastoral, still life and landscape paintings. The huge growth in demand for artists’ depictions of land and seascapes reflected both the dominance of the Dutch Navy and the many lucrative trading links to the Dutch Republic. However, despite their realism, these landscapes were of often rather idealised depictions of the Dutch countryside, embellished with fictional windmills and vignettes of toiling figures. In the Hierarchy of Genres, landscape and genre subjects had been categorised as “less significant”, according to rankings based on the French Academy’s Humanistic notion of “man as the measure of things”. Aert Van der Neer (1603-1677), a Dutch artist known primarily for atmospheric landscapes, was more influenced by Flemish painters rather than by his Amsterdam contemporaries. During the 1640s, having become accomplished at painting moonlit scenes, he helped to establish them as an entirely new sub-genre of landscape. Using coloured light, contrasted with a limited earthy palette of reddish browns and dark grey-blue, Van der Neer created subtle atmospheric effects as well as depth in his paintings. In this moonlit scene, currently being restored in the studio, the high proportion of sky to land creates a wonderful, expansive sense of distance, with a partly shrouded moon as the enigmatic focal point of light

Online Versus Introduction Agency One main thing that is very similar is that you are seeing a profile and photo of that person on a dating site or with a dating agency. However, the main difference is that we meet all our clients in their own homes whereas online you don’t know who you are dealing with as they don’t have the same checks as an agency will do. We like to get to know a client through a detailed interview which covers basic as well as more detailed information so we can then write a good profile about you. We check several forms of ID and also take some photos and you can pick the best one for your profile. With online some write very little or their profiles maybe misleading in some way. Our monthly charge are very similar to a paying online dating site but without the personal service of an Area Manager to help you through your membership. We work differently in that you get a monthly newsletter that you can pick a member you would like to have details of and go onto meet on a one to one. We have a varied social event calendar across the group and you can attend any of these events and we are open to suggestions. For more information please see our website.

BUILDING BRIDGES AND GREAT GATES Most readers will always think of Ramblers as walkers, as indeed they are, but the footpaths can only be walked on if they are “fit for purpose”. This is where the unseen work of the Mendip Ramblers working party is of such importance.

• CARPET & of HARD FLOOR CLEANING • OVEN & RANGE Almost every week the year the volunteers are out, each contributing about 170CLEANING hours to the work of repairing, and improving accessCLEANS for all who walk on the public rights way. FURNISHINGS This work is carried • ENDreplacing OF TENANCY & DEEP • UPHOLSTERY & of SOFT out on behalf of the local authorities, but it is free labour – so a lot of money is saved! In 2017 the Mendip group worked on numerous bridges and gates and kissing gates, and stiles and signposts. While this obviously helps the walkers it is also very good for the local communities – we hope we’re building bridges in every sense. For further information, visit www.mendipramblers.co.uk

WELLS CATHEDRAL ORATORIO SOCIETY

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR WILDLIFE SURVEY

Saturday 24 March: ‘Happy Birthday, Bernstein’

From Monday 26 March – June: People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) is calling for an army of volunteers to record any sightings of wild mammals they see in their gardens or local green spaces, as part of its annual Living with Mammals survey.

The centenary of the birth of Leonard Bernstein, composer and conductor, will be celebrated this month with an exciting concert at Wells Cathedral. The Cathedral's Oratorio Society will mark the occasion by performing the full orchestral version of Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, with orchestra, solo quartet, boy treble, trumpets, trombone, timpani, percussion and strings. The conductor is Matthew Owens.

Many of Britain’s mammals, including hedgehogs, foxes, and bats, make use of household gardens, recreational areas, cemeteries, allotments and brownfield sites. Records from the survey have helped to build a picture of how towns and cities can support wildlife.

Two works by Aaron Copland, who Bernstein called his "only real composition teacher", are also in the evening's programme: Fanfare for the Common Man and Appalachian Spring, performed by Southern Sinfonia orchestra. Completing the American theme is Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings.

This year, the survey will start on 26 March and runs through to the end of June. Volunteers need to spend some time observing a chosen site each week, for eight or more weeks of the survey period, looking out for wild mammals or the signs they leave behind and recording their sightings online or via paper forms.

The Oratorio Society will also sing the Gloria by Sir John Rutter, Patron of the Society. This work is often heard alongside the Chichester Psalms, and Bernstein lovers will find the final syncopated rhythm of this piece brings his music to mind.

To take part in PTES’ 2018 Living with Mammals survey, register online via: www.ptes.org/lwm

Bernstein, also an educator and humanitarian, said: “This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.” This does promise to be a magical musical evening indeed. 7pm, Wells Cathedral. Tickets from £10 available online at: wcos.org.uk. For help with your booking, please email boxoffice@wells-cathedral-school.com or call: 01749 834483

LOCAL BUSINESSES NEEDED TO SPONSOR THE SOMERSET POPPIES The Somerset Poppies is a display of poppies made by children in schools across the county and exhibited at The Bishop’s Palace, Wells on 11 November 2018, to commemorate 100 years since the end of WW1. Over 8000 wire stemmed poppies will represent every serviceman from Somerset, or who was serving in a Somerset regiment, who lost their lives during the First World War. It is hoped that personal, family stories about individuals involved may be gathered and collated to create a lasting record for future generations. The project will include an educational programme to ensure a long lasting knowledge and understanding of the loss and sacrifice is further developed in schools. Poppies will be sold to raise money for the Royal British Legion and SSAFA after they have been displayed for two weeks. This display will be a poignant and fitting reminder of what remembrance means to the county of Somerset, but can only happen with the generous support of sponsors. The total cost of the project will be £18,000 so any donations towards this amount would be gratefully received. If you are able to sponsor The Somerset Poppies, please contact Dan Vidler dvidler@educ.somerset.gov.uk or by telephone at Coxley School 01749 672719.

Is your dog protected against infectious disease? Here at Orchard Vets, we believe the correct vaccinations for your dog are a key part of a preventative health care strategy. Vaccination prevents infections that otherwise lead to serious illness or might even be fatal. But what vaccinations should your dog have, and when? We often hear that once dogs have had one vaccination, this does not need to be repeated – but is that true? Protection against the viral diseases distemper, infectious hepatitis and parvovirus is certainly long lasting, and re-vaccination is recommended every three years. The other vaccination that is advised for all dogs in the UK is against leptospirosis, a bacterial disease causing liver and kidney failure that may be fatal. Leptospirosis can also be passed to people, and thrives in the cool, damp British climate. For this reason, Leptospirosis vaccination is routinely recommended in the UK, though it may not be in some other countries. Protection from the leptospirosis vaccine unfortunately tends to wane after 12 months. If vaccination has not been carried out for over 15 months, a revaccination course, with 2 injections 4 weeks apart is advised to ensure protection. It can be easy for your pet's vaccination to slip your mind, but we don't want their protection against potentially fatal disease to slip too! During the month of March, you can have a complete vaccination course to bring your dog's vaccination back up to date for just the cost of an annual booster – a saving of nearly £25. Other vaccinations that may be recommended depend on your pet's lifestyle. For example, pets travelling abroad in Europe legally require a rabies vaccination in order to obtain a pet passport. Pets that are kennelled while owners are away, or attend daycare or classes, should also receive a kennel cough vaccination to protect them against respiratory infections. .

It’s been a funny old year, certainly the strangest in the 17 years since I’ve been in the industry. We’ve had times when you would expect it to be really busy but it’s been really quiet, and vice versa. Nowadays, with buyers almost getting to the point of deciding on a house they would like to buy before even viewing it, it is paramount to make sure the agent you choose to market your house with has the best marketing tools. Here at Laurel & Wylde, we know that we do!

Why not take a look at this chart and see what you think, and make sure, if you’re choosing an agent to sell your home, you’re picking one with the best marketing and one which sells their properties the quickest. Hopefully, this will avoid you being let down and tied into a very long contract with no way out! At Laurel & Wylde, we are so confident in what we do, we only offer a 0-week contract. Whilst we don’t have inside information as to what percentage of the asking price other agents are achieving, we can tell you that we are currently (as of 29/12/2017) selling at 98.4% of asking price, which we believe is phenomenal! But one of the more Average Time Estate Agent On Market (Days) exciting things to know about us is that we are selling Laurel & Wylde 117 our houses a lot quicker than anyone else. 151

What our clients say about us...

We put our house on the market with Nick. No sooner had he visited, taken details and lots of photos, the house was live on lots of websites, hitting the first viewed property on many as a ‘featured property’! This paid d ividends as the interest in our property was high. Live online by 10am with photos, viewings booked for that evening and an offer close to the asking price by 10am the following morning. Brilliant! the office kept us updated constantly and always answered our calls Andy Rossitter Laurel & Wylde are a wonderful Estate Agent. Leanne has been so friendly, patient and professional in helping my husband and I buy our first home. We’d definitely recommend Emily Wallis
