FROM THE EDITOR
Welcome to LocalReach Community Magazine... Hello, and welcome to March LocalReach. The evenings are getting lighter, the daffodils are beginning to bloom, lambing season is underway, and with Mothering Sunday on 11th March, we know that spring is definitely in the air! What a lovely time of year it is, and with so many signs of life in and around our countryside towns and villages, it’s no wonder there is so much going on in terms of events, activities, groups, charity fundraising and volunteering. It still amazes me the types of things which go on, which if I wasn’t editing this magazine I’d know nothing about! Read through to find out about Toad Patrols, Hedgehog Hospitals, and even a talk by James Bond. Yes, there’s some surprising information in this month’s issue, and I hope you enjoy the read. Thank you to all our contributors! Best wishes Catherine Davies, LocalReach Community Editor. Editorial deadline for the April issue is March 2nd

A treat for your feet! Dane Crafts, a Street manufacturer of custom slippers and moccasins – product review by LocalReach editor Andrea Cowan. If my feet had a mind of their own, I’m pretty sure they’d be sighing with contentment right now. I recently visited Dane Crafts, a family business manufacturing leather and sheepskin slippers and moccasins at their factory and showroom in Havyatt, just outside Glastonbury. They have been creating footwear for the last 30 years. I love a factory tour so was delighted to find that the majority of the processes are carried out onsite, except for the hand stitching which is done by a team of seamstresses from the comfort of their own home.
the full range is available online. I took a pair of Shelley slippers home. They are a moccasin style with a hard sole (soft soles, or traditional ‘carpet slippers’, are also available in other styles) and are crafted from English suede lined with cosy West Country sheepskin. The wool is warm but surprisingly breathable, so I can see myself wearing these long into the spring. In fact, don’t expect to see me and out & about any time soon – I’m far too busy at home road-testing my slippers! Sizes range from UK 3 up to 16, and there is even a custom-made service available for anyone with awkward feet! There are a huge variety of colours and designs, all at unbelievably competitive prices. The stockroom in Havyatt has plenty of styles but

The Friends of St. James AGM and Talk Thursday 22nd March: Talk by Jerry Sampson at 7.30pm in St. James' Church Hall. The talk will be preceded by the Annual General Meeting of The Friends of St. James at 7pm. St. James' Church, Winscombe, before the Reformation Most people associate the Reformation in England with Henry VIII, but the king was primarily concerned with taking control of the church from the Pope in order to secure a divorce. In many ways Henry was very conservative in his religious views and ordinary people would have seen little change in their church buildings and worship. It was when Henry died in 1547 and the throne passed to his young son Edward, that there was a real upheaval at parish level. Edward had been brought up in very protestant household and gave free rein to Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury, to make England a Protestant country. Cranmer introduced a new 'Book of Common Prayer' in English in which Morning and Evening Prayer replaced the Latin Missal. There were also many changes made to the look and feel of church buildings. Much of the medieval colour and imagery was lost. So what did St. James' Church look like before the Reformation? To find out come and hear the talk by Jerry Sampson. The Friends are a separate charity from the church, set up to help preserve and enhance the beautiful 15th Century building.

Is your router up to the job? You would possibly expect that the free router provided by your internet provider would be very good quality and give the best possible signal. Unfortunately, we find that this equipment does often not allow the speeds that your line could achieve and a wireless signal with far less range than the television adverts would suggest. Another issue that we find very frequently is that most routers over the age of three years old, often do not run at the speeds of their modern equivalent. Sometimes this is due to the technology within the router and other times we find that equipment is degraded due to heat and power fluctuations. Here are some tips to get the best possible speeds from your Internet connection: 1) Make sure that you are on fibre broadband. A quick call to your provider will tell you if this is possible. Please note that not all providers will supply fibre, even though it is technically available. Sky broadband is one example where they will say no to fibre, when other providers will say Yes 2) look at getting a more up-to-date router and in particular look at third-party routers. For example Netgear or Draytek sell some very good routers. VDSL routers support fibre broadband. ADSL routers support standard broadband 3) Homeplugs (also known as powerline adapters)are the best way to get fast Wi-Fi around the house. These use the earth circuit in your property to get the signal from the router to a distant room or area. 4) Spend some time on the phone with your Internet provider’s technical support. Ask them what speed your line should achieve and whilst they are on the phone, run some speed tests (they will advise you which ones to use). If your speed is more than 10% lower than the suggested speed, then I would press them further on ways to improve this. 5). Have an expert come and look at your system to see if any improvements can be made. Quite often even a small adjustment by somebody who knows the technology, can make a big difference to your overall Internet experience. If you see our advert on this page we can visit you at your home or office, and give an evaluation of your current equipment and internet performance. Small Change for a Big Change!
Winscombe and Priddy Toad Patrols
Contractors are being sought to build the new access at Axbridge Parish Church. Fundraising began in December with our ‘Change for Change’ campaign. We want lots of people to share our vision of ‘Access for All’, by collecting their small change for the next five months and donating it to our Building Fund. A summer-time event will be a sponsored fun-run [or droll-stroll] around Axbridge town’s southern boundary. Look out for ‘Axbridge Steps Out’. Contact for details: Paul Passey
We need volunteers to assist toads during the annual migration which takes place during February and March. The toads are walking from their over-wintering sites to their ancestral breeding ponds, crossing several roads along the way. On warm wet evenings from dusk, volunteers in high-vis tabards will be picking up toads in the road, putting them in buckets and delivering them safely across the road. It’s part of a national initiative co-ordinated by the charity Froglife and locally supported by the Reptile and Amphibian Group for Somerset (RAGS), and the statistics are reported to the Wildlife Trust. The common toad is not so common now that numbers are rapidly declining. Last year the Winsombe patrol saved 1439 toads but sadly 400 were killed by traffic. Patrolling the toad crossing significantly reduces the mortality rate. Anyone interested in volunteering can email Joy to join the Winscombe patrol: joytrus@hotmail.co.uk, and John to join the Priddy patrol: jdickson61@aol.com

IT’S TIME TO GET CONNECTED TO BETTER BROADBAND When we think about it, how the internet touches our lives on a daily basis is simply remarkable. From skyping families to online shopping and banking, we rely on the internet far more than we like to admit. So why are so many people still stuck with poor and unreliable broadband, making the simplest of tasks like sending emails a frustrating and time-consuming venture? Thousands of homes and businesses across the South West are struggling with this as the current, copper-based infrastructure simply cannot cope with modern day internet demands. Reliable broadband that easily handles today’s requirements and the future demands it will have still seems a farfetched hope for those in rural areas. Local company TrueSpeed however, is here to connect the South West to some of the fastest most reliable speeds the UK has to offer. TrueSpeed offers an entirely new and different infrastructure as they connect every property with their own gigabit capable, full fibre cable directly into the premises. No cables are spilt from the cabinet and spread across multiple properties, no dropping out or slower speeds at peak times just pure, uncontended fibre with each and every connection. We only offer guaranteed minimum speeds of 200Mb/s, never ‘Up To’ speeds. So, when you need faster speeds to cope with increasing internet demands, our remote server increases the speeds to your property with no re-installing required, offering you a truly futureproof broadband solution. We’re a demand lead service so require 30% of the community to sign up and let us know they want a TrueSpeed connection when building starts. Simply visit our website www.truespeed.com and complete a Service Order Form and your internet woes could be gone sooner than you think! We’re proud of our ethos and enjoy giving back to communities so for every community we connect; we’ll connect the local school and village hall to free broadband for life so the entire community can benefit for years to come. TrueSpeed doesn’t offer hidden catches, just truly reliable, futureproof broadband for you and your community. 20

New Waste Services System Somerset’s new waste services system took another big step forward in February with the formal launch of construction of a new £252 million Resource Recovery Centre (RRC) in Avonmouth. Once complete in 2020, the RRC will take all of Somerset’s household rubbish and convert it into energy for thousands of homes through the national grid. As well as switching tens of thousands of tonnes of rubbish from costly, wasteful and polluting landfill, Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) is launching a new collections contract in 2020 with extra materials – including a range of plastic packaging – taken every week at the kerbside using a brand new fleet of vehicles.

What our clients say about us...
We put our house on the market with Nick. No sooner had he visited, taken details and lots of photos, the house was live on lots of websites, hitting the first viewed property on many as a ‘featured property’! This paid d ividends as the interest in our property was high. Live online by 10am with photos, viewings booked for that evening and an offer close to the asking price by 10am the following morning. Brilliant! the office kept us updated constantly and always answered our calls Andy Rossitter Laurel & Wylde are a wonderful Estate Agent. Leanne has been so friendly, patient and professional in helping my husband and I buy our first home. We’d definitely recommend Emily Wallis
