HP Instant Ink is a monthly service subscription offered by HP (Hewlett Packard) that allows any eligible ink-based HP printer, provided a working internet connection, to automatically have new compatible ink shipped to arrive shortly before the current ink depletes, meaning never a single moment with no ink at home again. Old cartridges are to be recycled back to HP. With email notifications, this system removes all the leg-work from ordering ink, while keeping you informed. Most HP ink-based printers with a touchscreen interface will be eligible for this service. For a list of eligible printers, head to http://instantink. hpconnected.com and expand “Is my printer eligible for HP Instant Ink?”. This service can be set up upon purchase of a new eligible printer, or at any later date. The monthly cost depends on how many pages the user wishes to print per month, allowing everybody to find a plan that fits their needs best. For example, £1.99/m allows for 50 pages, ranging to £7.99/m for 300 pages.

Neil Buzzard. Computer Problem Solutions Ltd. Tel: 07973 536299

Whatever your reason for moving, Need my own space

Due to ink prices, most people fear the day their printer runs dry and new ink needs purchasing, often finding themselves foraging around the web for the cheapest ink deals. Many who do this are unaware of a modern new alternative to ordering ink designed to save on ink costs.

On any given plan, un-used monthly prints automatically carry over to the following month, allowing for up to double the original limit, for example, if no monthly prints are done while subscribed to the £1.99 (50 prints) plan, the following month allows for 100 prints. While those who print the most are set to save the most on ink costs by using this service, anyone who prints roughly 50 or more pages per month should consider signing up; head over to www.hpconnected.com for more information.

Effective new treatment for Golfer’s elbow Overuse or an injury to the flexing muscles of the forearm or the muscles used for gripping can lead to the pain that is known as Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis). It affects the inner side of the elbow and can sometimes be combined with tennis elbow, which afflicts the outer side. Whether this condition is focused at the elbow or extends to the surrounding forearm and towards the wrist, it’s painful and debilitating. Conventionally, treatment has involved steroid injections but there is a danger in long term steroid use. Acupuncture, physiotherapy exercises, osteopathy and chiropractic have also been shown to improve the condition. Now, there is a new, state of the art treatment option available locally - Shockwave therapy. This fast, effective process sends mechanical pulses deep into the problem area to stimulate healing. Assessment is free and just five treatments can make a big difference. For a free assessment at Somerset Shockwave call 01458 836153 ….. More information at www.somersetshockwave.co.uk

Wedmore Opera Saturday 27 January: This is the first date for the 2018 diary - join us to celebrate Burns Night. The chance to enjoy a delicious traditional Burns Night supper prepared by local chef, Nick Armitage, a well-stocked bar, lots of singing with the opportunity to join in – what could be better? Get involved! We are all volunteers at Wedmore Opera, and always have been. Every one of our productions since the very beginning has been realised through the generous gift of people’s time, energy, skill and money. The chorus, our technical team, our director, conductor, administrator, webmaster, ticket sellers, programme writers, fundraisers, publicists and front of house staff are all volunteers. You’d be amazed by the amount there is to do in order to stage a production of this nature, and if you would like to get involved, we will certainly find a job for you. Don’t hold back! www.wedmoreopera.com/contact/

The workshop is being held at 3pm in St. Mary’s Church, Wedmore followed by the talk at 6.30pm. Both events are open to everyone, suitable for all ages and free of charge. Come and learn about how we are going to take the village of Wedmore to Zero Carbon in an exciting new project and learn more about the Zero Carbon Britain journey at the same time. See http:// zerocarbonbritain.com for more information.

The benefits of local independent dental care are more affordable than you might think Across the country many dental practices are now owned and operated by corporate groups. This can leave some patients feeling that they don’t receive the same personal service they used to enjoy.

At Priory Dental in wells, we pride ourselves on being able to provide a personal and responsive service. Being a small independently owned practice gives us the ability to really get to know our patients. This means we know what you want and need from us, and you can be confident we can find the right solutions for you. The cost of this personal service is less than you might expect. PrioryPlan is only £8.49 per month. Unlike many plans, there is no joining fee and when you join in advance your initial dental examination is included. PrioryPlan allows you to be seen every six months for a comprehensive dental examination including a dental scaling and any x-rays that may be clinically required. Any additional

treatment is then offered based on our highly competitive fees. Another option is our more advanced plan known as PrioryPlan Complete. This includes the cost of most routine dental treatments and includes cover for dental emergencies at home or abroad. It starts from only £18 per month with the monthly fee dependent on your current state of dental health. Alternatively you may opt to pay as you go with a private dental examination from only £29. Please see our website at www.priorydental.com for further details of both membership schemes and our current private fees. Whichever option you choose, you can be sure you will receive the same high standard of care. If you would like more information please do not hesitate to get in touch, either via the website, by telephone or in person. We look forward to hearing from you. Dr Ryan K Hughes BDS(Bris), MBChB(Bris), BSc(Bris), MFDS(Edin), FFDRCS(Ire).

Through the work of Green Wedmore, the village is already well on the way to reducing its carbon footprint, with its car charging points, community solar paddocks, freecycle days, repair cafés, community woodland, and current campaign for solar on the village hall. The next step is to fully map the village and provide a plan for reducing our carbon footprint to neutral by a set date. Come along to the event, be inspired and learn how you can contribute to this target.

“The implementation of the Paris Agreement is a milestone without precedent in the story of human beings, energy and happiness. The work now begins to make it happen. In the process, we may soon discover this new chapter offers a sense of global, national and local collective purpose that many have been craving for a very long time.” – Paul Allen

Repair Café

Men Get Cooking!

Saturday 20 January: Christmas presents broken already? When a small household appliance stops working, when a toy breaks or a piece of clothing becomes unstitched, often the first reaction is to throw it away? Bin it? No way! Bring it to Repair Café Winscombe on Saturday 20 January, at Lynch Chapel, The Lynch, Winscombe, 10.30am to 1pm. Skilled volunteer repairers will be available to help make all possible repairs free of charge. Bring along broken items: toys, bicycles, lamps, hair dryers, clothes, crockery....... and we will do our best to help repair them. If you don’t have anything to repair, join us in the café for a drink and cake, see what we are doing and perhaps help others with their repairs.

Fridays: Delicious, hearty meals cooked to your own taste - there’s no better incentive to learn essential home cooking skills. Small friendly groups, led by an experienced tutor soon build up skills over six sessions which also cover food safety, healthy eating and shopping wisely. Each week you bring ingredients then transform them into a nutritious meal to take home. Special diets accommodated. Men Get Cooking! is sponsored by Comic Relief and Churchill Methodist Church. New courses commence Fridays in January and February at Winscombe Community Centre and cost £38. For details, call Jacquelene on 01934 844134.

Not sure what you can bring to Repair Café? Ask on our Facebook group; look for Repair Café Winscombe, see www.repaircafe-winscombe.org.uk, email info@repaircafe-winscombe.org.uk or call 01934 843402.

Wedmore First School Raises over £2,000! The festive spirit was certainly in abundance at Wedmore First School Academy’s annual Christmas Craft Fair, with craft traders, stalls by the PTA and the pupils, as well as games run by the teachers, all helping to raise vital funds for the school. The evening was a great success, with over £2,000 raised for the school! Thanks to everyone who helped and came along on the night.

Music Helps Us Learn! Churchill Music, with support from Arts Council England, has released a new film showing how music helps us learn. The short film, narrated by John Hannah, draws on the latest scientific research to demonstrate the importance of music in our schools. Drawing on research from Prof. Susan Hallam and Dr. Anita Collins, and Prof. Helen Odell-Miller OBE, Music Helps Us Learn explains how structured musical tuition is one of the most effective ways to stimulate the whole brain. Illustrating the research, the film shows the role of music in two schools. Gallions Primary School has had a music-centred approach for over twenty years. Staff at the school describe music as much more than an ‘add-on’ – it is embedded in everyday teaching and learning across all subject areas. In a school where 59% of children do not have English as their first language, music is a universal language of learning. Staff at Illminster Avenue E-ACT Academy in Bristol explain how music has been a key part of their school improvement strategy, making it in the top 40 schools in the UK (in just four years) for progress from arrival to departure. The success of this strategy is evident in dramatically improved SATS results and enthusiastic support and engagement from parents at a school where 70% of children qualify for free school meals. School assemblies and performances are now such popular community events that more parents want to come than the school has space to accommodate. Having seen the benefit of music in her school, Ms. Hussain (Headteacher at Gallions Primary Schools) provides the final words of the film: “I don’t think there should be anything that stops you from embracing music because it has many benefits.” You can watch the video and explore a range of resources to get started making music in schools at www.musichelpsuslearn.com 22

Cheddar in Bloom Apologies for the entry in the last issue regarding Cheddar in Bloom. This community organisation is no longer running. Sorry for any confusion caused. Make Volunteering your New Year’s Resolution! The Samaritans are looking for more people to help boost their team. The WsM and North Somerset branch is part of a national charity which offers emotional support for those struggling to cope. It is open around the clock and as well as taking over 14,000 calls last year, the local volunteers also answered almost 3,000 emails and 700 texts. Branch director Joe said: “We are always busy and desperately need new volunteers to join us. We are asking members of the local community to sign up to support those who may not have anywhere else to turn. If you have just a few hours a week to spare then we would love to hear from you.” Regular information mornings are held at the charity’s Weston-super-Mare branch in the town’s High Street. The next one is on Saturday 13 January running from 10am - 12pm. More information is available from recruitment director Gill on 07507 990599 or email samaritansrecruitmentwsm@yahoo.com Gill says: “We provide extensive training and support to our volunteers and it is an incredibly rewarding job to do. If you feel you can’t take on the listening roles there are plenty of other ways you can support the branch. We would love to see you.”

Winscombe Luncheon Club Wednesdays: If you are a pensioner and live alone then you are eligible to join our club for a freshly cooked meal and friendly company at the Community Centre on Sandford Road. We meet every Wednesday except during August and on the run-up to Christmas. The cost is only £4 per meal and for 50p more we'll even collect you and deliver you home afterwards! There may be a waiting list for places, so call Mo Matthews on 01934 843729 to book a place or to receive further details. Mo would also be glad to hear from volunteers who would be interested in joining a team once a month to help prepare the food; it's fun and the teams are greatly appreciated.

News from the Strawberry Line

Jumble Sale

Wedmore Scout Group

As those of you who use the Line regularly will already know, Bristol Water are running new pipes from the Axbridge reservoir to Banwell and Barrow Tanks to ensure that there will be sufficient water for us all in days to come and especially if we are to have more houses built in the area. Work has been delayed in order to be sensitive to the needs of the bat population who live in the tunnel. It looks as though much of the work on the Line is already finished but not so. Once the work is finished, high pressure water will be sent down it to test it for leaks - and there is a time factor in this - but don't worry, we will make sure everyone will know when the Line is ready to be open to us all again. We hope it will be early in the new year

Saturday 27 January: In aid of Winscombe Table Tennis Club to be held at Winscombe Community Centre, Sandford Road, 2pm. Donations of jumble may be brought to the Community Centre from 10am.

This Scout Group, whose history goes back to the early days of Scouting, has its own modern ‘Den’ for meetings.

Community Café Saturdays: On the first Saturday of every month from 10.30am, the All Saints Church (Sandford) and Community Café is a great opportunity to meet friends and family.

Shipham Players Friday 2 & Saturday 3 February: Shipham Players’ production of Seeking Sleeping Beauty. Shipham Players are a drama group based at Shipham village hall. They meet Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm, and have three productions per year. They cover the full range - plays, cabaret suppers, pantomimes and murder mysteries. New members always welcome - on or off stage. See www.shiphamplayers.org.uk or visit the Facebook Page for more information.

Table Tennis Club

The Group, which has around 70 young members, helps young people to fulfil their potential by working in teams, learning by doing and thinking for themselves, and providing experiences they’ll never forget. No matter what their age, background or experience, young people can join in the adventure, make many great friends, and have a good deal of fun in the process. The Group encourage people to get involved by volunteering in Scouting; as apart from being fun and rewarding, it provides an opportunity to learn new skills, rediscover adventure, make new friends, and give something back to the local community. Apart from the Group’s own activities, the ‘Den’ acts as a community hub, with many local organisations regularly using it for their events. The ‘Den’ is also occasionally used by visiting Scout Groups at the weekend, so that they can enjoy the Mendips for caving, climbing and walking activities. For more information about the Group, or to offer to help out, contact: Beavers (aged 6 to 8 years), normanbeavers@wedmorescoutgroup.org.uk; Cubs (aged 8 to 10½ years), celt-cubs@wedmorescoutgroup.org.uk; Scouts (aged 10½ to 14 years), scout-leader@wedmorescoutgroup.org.uk For general enquiries: groupleader@wedmorescoutgroup.org.uk

Cleaning Up Cromwell Fittingly, in this the 500th anniversary year of the Reformation, a seventeenthcentury portrait of the first Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell appeared in the studio this month. The second period of Reformation opened with Jenny Geddes remarkable exclamations in Edinburgh, preceded the eventual institution of Cranmer’s 1662 Book of Common Prayer, and was certainly framed by Oliver Cromwell's stepping into the breach of leadership in England. After the cruel tyrannies of Charles I, that included the terrors of the Star Chamber, the indiscriminate seizing of land, arbitrary taxation and the banning of newspapers, the Long Parliament set in motion events that would lead to the signing of the King’s death warrant for treason in 1649. This oil on canvas painting is an early copy, quite possibly after Lely, whose famous portrait in the National Gallery collection it closely resembles. Robert Walker, Peter Lely and the miniature painter Samuel Cooper painted the best-known depictions we have of Cromwell. Cooper excelled in capturing detail, demanding an exhaustive eight sittings from his clients, produced ‘warts and all’ studies of the statesman. However, the true and unflattering approach was famously requested by Cromwell of Lely, a seasoned court painter given to more generous portrayals! Cromwell is typically depicted in his role as a highly able and astute military commander. Walker, chiefly a parliamentary painter during the Commonwealth period, sets his composition at three-quarter length, in cuirassier armour and holding the baton of authority. In this portrait, now in the National Portrait Gallery collection, Cromwell is front facing, with shoulders and body at a three-quarter view. Lely’s bust portrait is similar in composition but faces the sitter three-quarters to the viewer. This little painting is an early copy that, to my humble observation, seems closest to Lely in compositional style and facial character. The, now rectangular, picture was cut down from a larger oval, as is evident from age cracking patterns in the paint clearly following the arc of a long-gone oval stretcher. As cleaning progresses, the spandrels of the original oval composition, the uncompromising detail of the sitter's face and his red hair are now emerging from the gloom of a very darkened varnish.

Winscombe Ladies’ Running Group We are looking for a new Group Leader! To become a RunTogether Group Leader, you need to have completed a UK Athletics Leadership in Running Fitness course which covers training, insurance and support. This is a one-day practical course. You will learn essential health and safety for leading a group run, how to structure running sessions appropriate to the level of your runners (including warm-ups, cooldowns and stretches), and how to plan suitable routes. There is no exam or assessment, and completion of the course qualifies and equips you to deliver group runs. For more information, contact Emma on 01275 343918.

National Accolade for School Winscombe Primary School has been given the Achievement for All (AfA) award, which is a national accrediation given to schools for improving outcomes of children of all abilities. The prestigious award marks progress in reading, writing and maths for all pupils, especially those with special educational needs and disabilities. 26
