From the editor May is an extremely busy month in the local area. This issue is packed with lots of ideas to keep you and your family entertained whatever your interests. For the green fingered amongst you regular contributor Martin Mudie has some seasonal gardening tips; there are lots of May Fairs taking place in all parts of the locality, plus the return of the Easy Life Theatre Company to Strode Theatre. This issue also includes full details of the new venue for Slimming World plus lots of ideas to keep you fit and with the long summer days fast approaching why not head down to Greenbank Swimming Pool which opens its doors on the 5th May. Tension-type Headache Tension-type headache is the common type of headache that most people have at some time. Typically, the pain is like a tightness around the hat-band area.You can feel a squeezing or pressure on the head usually on both sides of your head, and often spreads along the neck. The pain is usually moderate or mild, but sometimes it can be severe. Many tension-type headaches develop for no apparent reason. Some may be triggered by things such as emotional tension, anxiety,or stress. Physical tension in the muscles of the scalp and neck and poor posture at a desk may cause this. Factors such as sunlight, cold, heat, noise may cause symptoms. A walk, some exercise, or simply taking a break from the normal routine may help. If symptoms persist then one should consult a health professional such as a doctor or an osteopath. At the Somerset Health Practice our approach is to combine healthcare techniques from a range of disciplines including acupuncture, herbal medicine, osteopathy, exercise and lifestyle advice, which will vary with individual patient needs. The Street Society starts its summer out-door programme with a special visit to the newly opened Taunton Museum of Somerset on 24th May. The members will be shown around the building in an out-of-hours guided tour of the exhibits. These exhibits have been collected from all over the county, telling the story of Somerset from prehistoric times to the present day. Previously closed parts of the castle have been opened and the interior has been fitted out with the latest in display cabinets and audio visual equipment. Solar energy specialists help energise Ethiopia Thousands of homes in the South West are benefiting from the clean green energy of solar power, and now the same technology is being used to improve the health of rural communities in one of Africa’s poorest nations. A team of volunteers from the South West’s leading renewable energy specialists has just returned from 2 weeks spent installing solarpowered fridges for storing vaccines at remote health posts in a rural area of Ethiopia. Recognising the desperate need for properly refrigerated vaccines in the heat, the company raised money through donations and fund-raising activities for its charity partner For-Ethiopia, which works to relieve poverty and sickness in the East African country. Staff from Solarsense travelled to a rural area west of the capital Addis Ababa at the end of March. They installed solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roofs of three health posts to generate electricity, fitted the vaccine fridges and trained key local people in how to operate and maintain the fridges. The team of three also revisited another health post, Beso, where Solarsense staff installed solar PV
and a vaccine fridge last year. Each of these posts serves at least 2,000 people, as well as supplying properly refrigerated vaccines to other nearby health posts. The electric fridges safely store vaccines used to immunise children against potentially fatal diseases such as tuberculosis, polio, tetanus and diphtheria. When the temperature of these vaccines reaches 8 degrees C, the potency is destroyed and they have to be discarded. Before the solar-powered fridge was installed at Beso, one in three vaccines had to be discarded but now the wastage rate is down to zero. Stephen Barrett of Solarsense said: “We have installed solar energy systems on thousands of homes and business premises across the South West, and are glad to be able to use our expertise in helping communities in other parts of the world.” The Solarsense charity team offer workshops and presentations for school or other community groups on solar power and its impacts in the developing world. Notice board The Mid Somerset Camera Club meets every Tuesday evening at the Tor Leisure Centre, Glastonbury at 8.00pm until approximately 10.00 pm from September until May. The group follows an organised programme which includes tuition, visiting, speakers, practical sessions and competitions. Typically the Club holds several exhibitions every year. Finding out about Life in India
The children in Class 3 at Ashcott Primary School received a special visit from an Indian dancer as part of their class topic learning about life in India. The children learned a number of traditional Indian dance moves which they performed in front of their parents and the rest of the school. The children spent a day creating Rangoli patterns and dressing up in traditional Indian clothing as well as taking part in a variety of other activities helping them to learn about Indian culture and traditions.

Overwhelming” response to Glastonbury Fringe plans Organisers of the inaugural Glastonbury Fringe project have been overwhelmed by the support in the town. “This year’s Fringe is set to be a huge success,” says Sandra Evans, one of the project’s coordinators. “It’s already gone viral – Glastonbury Fringe is being featured on websites and blogs all over the country.” The Fringe will take place over the 11 days from 21st June to 1st July. The initiative aims to put Glastonbury – the Town – back on the map by showcasing both Glastonbury’s vibrant local music and arts scene, and the town itself. The idea is to draw people into the “real” Glastonbury during festival season, when the town has seen a significant drop in visitor numbers during recent years. The project is being hosted by Glastonbury Community

Development Trust, with seed funding from Somerset County Council and Glastonbury Town Council. The initial aim, according to GCDT chair Sara Clay, was to see whether local people would take to the idea. “The response has been beyond anything we could have imagined,” she says. “It’s amazing what this town can do when we all pull together. We’ve been overwhelmed by the support and enthusiasm on offer – and the talent. The events so far are as vibrant and varied as the town – concerts and gigs, art exhibitions, crafts workshops, theatre productions and more.” A season of independently produced events is being promoted under one banner for the Fringe. Over 20 Glastonbury venues have now been confirmed, and nearly 40 events are in the pipeline, with more
to come. Fringe venues range from small pubs and cafés, to the Town Hall, the Assembly Rooms and local churches, and the world-famous Glastonbury Abbey. DIY Made Easier - How to wallpaper a room – By Mike Free Decorative wallpapers are now back in fashion and it is an easy way to change the appearance of a room. They come in all types from smooth vinyl's to heavy embossed papers. How many rolls ? Most of the large retailers have charts for you to work out how many rolls you will need but it is usually 3 or 4 lengths of paper per roll for the average height room. Patterned papers either have a straight across pattern or a drop of about 40cm. You can save on the number of rolls by using alternative rolls for each strip. Batch numbers . Make sure you get enough rolls of the same batch number - if stocks are running low, you will find mixed numbers for sale and you need to be careful. If they do not have enough, you can get away with using a different batch on a whole wall (or perhaps go for a contrasting feature wall) but never mix them - it will show up afterwards ! Preparation - Remove the old covering and wash the walls of any remaining adhesive or bits of paper. Fill any holes and smooth before it sets. Use a thinned down solution of the wallpaper adhesive to "size" the walls all over and allow to dry; this will bind the surface together and stop the wallpaper drying out too quickly when you hang it. Cutting - Use a pasteboard to lay the paper out ready for pasting. The paper is unrolled face up and cut to length with about 10cm at the top and bottom to allow for trimming. With a patterned paper, match the design at the front edge and mark the length as before. You then proceed by matching the alternative pieces on the table and most people cut two rolls ready for pasting. Now turn the whole pile over - unfortunately most paper is now rolled with the pattern on the outside so you can see it in the
shops but it means it wants to roll itself up again ! You will have to roll it in the reverse direction to overcome this. Pasting - Have the pile of paper overhanging the back of the table and pull the top sheet towards the front edge. Paste the centre of the sheet starting at the top (usually at the right) and then the edges pasting outwards so the it does not get under the edges. Fold the top end over and pull the paper along the table to bring the bottom edge onto it and paste as before. Fold the bottom edge upwards and lay the pasted sheet somewhere safe to soak. Hanging - Draw a vertical line to start the first strip and start hanging from the window or brightest part of the room. Most paper is not trimmed straight now days! If you butt them up to each other you will see a repeating gap between the sheets caused by the cutting wheels not being straight. You will therefore most likely have to overlap the paper to hide this and by working from the window, you will not cause a shadow which will make it look worse. Smooth out the paper starting from the middle using a brush or soft cloth and press the ends into the top and bottom. Mark with a soft pencil using the shaft of the pencil flat on the wall. You can then trim to length by cutting away the pencil mark. Smooth off and wipe any adhesive from the paper or skirting with a damp cloth. When going around corners, trim the paper to width on the pasteboard allowing 2 cm to go round the corner( never more) and allow the next sheet on the other wall to overlap it. On chimney breasts always allow the front sheet to overlap around the corner away from you. What would you do if you won the lottery? For myself I would rush out and buy Country Life and choose from one of the wonderful mansions advertised in the front (complete with staff, of course!). It isn't that I don’t love my charming little cottage garden (sadly unappreciated by the Lovely Muriel who still refers to it as ‘the jungle’ - in spite of the handy little flame –thrower I bought her for her birthday – it’s just that I could grow more of my favourite shrub, the Rhododendron (hereafter called the Rhody to save my typing). I love Rhodys who very much live up to their name of ‘Rose-Tree’. The good news for the cottage gardener is that there are now several smaller types available. 1) Rhody Yak – these come from Japan and give the same size flowers as the larger model but on a smaller bush. There are many named hybrids including a series named after the seven dwarfs – dozy, sneezy, etc. 2) Azalea Ghent ( yes, these are Rodys too) These are deciduous and lose their leaves in the winter but often have a lovely scent, especially the yellow ones 3) Azalea Japanese – these are the smaller ones that keep their leaves, have bright colours but no scent 4) The Alpine Rhodys – tiny ones – suitable for the sink garden. Do remember that all of these are lime haters so can only be grown in a chalk free soil – however if you get a compost called ‘Ericaceous’ you can grow them, like camellias, in tubs. You must also feed and water the tubs regularly if they are to flourish. If you fancy an outing to see Rhodys and Azaeas, I recommend a visit to the Exbury Gardens in the New Forest, owned by the Rothschilds. The middle of May is usually the best time. Topical Tips Dead head your daffodils and other spring bulbs to allow the goodness to go into the bulb for next spring. Leave the leaves to wither naturally Treat Roses to special rose feed to increase the number of flowers At the end of May give your herbaceous plants ‘the Chelsea Chop’. Cut them in half and they will give more flowers without needing extra support. Happy Gardening!

People Of Glastonbury Go The Extra Mile For Sport Relief Over100local people turned out in force on Sunday 25th March at the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile at Glastonbury Leisure Centre. Milers of all ages were sponsored to do 1, 3 or 6 miles around the Leisure Centre’s playing fields. The day was a massive success with friends, families and work mates joining together in friendly rivalry to go the extra mile for Sport Relief 2012.The highlight of the day had to be the Zumba warm up by Angela Smith (Classes on Tues, Weds, Thurs & Sat), the men’s co-ordination was slightly off time but that just
added to the fun. Matt Harras from Glastonbury Leisure Centre said, “It was a fantastic day! Watching the community come together to support such a great cause was brilliant! We feel very proud knowing that the money raised here today will help people living unimaginably tough lives right here in Somerset, across the rest of the UK and in some of the world’s poorest countries.” More than one million men, women and children came together to walk, run or hop 1,3 or 6 miles at the hundreds of Sainsbury’s Sport Relief events
that took place across the length and breadth of the country over the Sport Relief weekend. The Sport Relief 2012 total currently stands at £52,070,587 with more still coming in from Milers getting sponsored and the public raising money in all sorts of inventive and challenging ways. The Mendip Mallards Association (MDA) The MDA is a charity based organisation formed in 1980 to provide recreational facilities for anyone with a health or mobility issue and their families living in Somerset The MDA provides a ‘sheltered swim’ as well as arranging other social activities throughout the year Members swim each Sunday from 12:30pm to 1:30pm at Strode Pool, Street. The Sponsored Swim in March was superbly supported by local schools and organisations with 45 teams participating in the swim at Millfield School Pool which was kindly made available to the Lions by the head teacher. Street Neighbourhood Watch Association Street and District Swimming Club was formed in the 1970’s and grown in both numbers and success with every year. The Club swims and uses the facilities of the local pool at Strode, Millfield, Greenbank and Wells Cathedral Pool. There Is Still Time To Celebrate! All across the country people will be flocking to the streets and parks to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and London hosting the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games. Why not join in the festivities and arrange your own street party or community event? If you are thinking of holding a street party to celebrate The Queen's Diamond Jubilee, make sure top of your list is to talk to Mendip District Council; this will ensure that there are no last minute disappointments. Cllr Nigel Taylor, portfolio holder for regulatory services said: "Street parties are a great way to join up with your local community and get involved and by working with the council you will be able to ensure that your event can go ahead successfully. “I strongly urge anyone who is interested in holding a street party or any other type of event to contact the council soon so they don’t miss out. Road closures need to be arranged 10 weeks in advance and licenses or temporary event notices may be required. If you are just planning a 18
small private street party, it may be that you do not need a road closure or any form of licensing unless you are selling alcohol, food or other goods. If you are not sure it is worth contacting the council's licensing team on 01749 648999. At the beginning of March Street Neighbourhood Watch Association (SNWA) supported Avon and Somerset Police’s Operation Relentless when members undertook Vulnerable Vehicle Checks in local car-parks. The number of vehicles identified this year was significantly lower – only 20. Does this mean the public is getting wiser? The Association’s Annual General Meeting took place on Tuesday 13th March. The reports of the chairman and treasurer and the accounts were adopted and the officers appointed for the forthcoming year. This was followed by the SNWA’s own Dragons’ Den. Three local community initiatives - The Somerset Motor Project, Street and Glastonbury University of the 3rd Age (U3A) and Young People’ve Got Talent – all made short presentations to the Dragons’ Den seeking funding for projects with a theme of safety and security either in or for the Street community. After their pitch the applicants were subjected to questioning by the Dragons’ Den which included Graham Knight who is Head of Business Development at Strode College and Liz Leyshon who is manager of Strode Theatre. The outcome was that £1200 was presented in total to the three projects. The Somerset Motor Project was originally set up by the Probation Service in 1992 to provide a programme for persistent adult motoring offenders as an alternative to custody – the project had a 75% success rate of non reoffending !, This was originally a two year trial project but it is now celebrating 20 years of service. The Project now is a Registered Charity and has broaden its client groups and now works with mainstream schools, children and adults with learning difficulties and school exclusions. The programme of study is of a vocational nature and has an emphasis on individual learning packages. The Somerset Motor Project is perfectly placed to motivate disengaged young people: raising self esteem and self worth. The Project enables trainees to progress to other forms of education or training, increasing the opportunity to find suitable
trained animal carers who are again assisted by dedicated and caring volunteers. When 100% fit and strong these animals are wherever possible returned to the wild. Secret World also plays a vital role in educating the public through visiting schools, through its open days and through its insightful website with its much-loved web cams where visitors can see the antics of the wonderful wildlife in the west country. It costs £135 to rescue an animal or bird - all funds raised will help to keep Secret World going and boost the hospital and education centre project.

Ashcott pupils present Edith’s Wartime Scrapbook
The children in Class 4 at Ashcott Primary School recently put on a performance of ‘Edith’s Wartime Scrapbook’. The play was based on the Second World War and formed a part of the children’s topic work. There were three performances in all, one for the school children, one for members of the local community as well as an evening performance for parents and families. Retired members of the local community were invited into school for a special performance in the afternoon, followed by tea and cakes served by the children. The afternoon finished with a singalong with the choir singing wartime favourites – and
lots of audience participation! Praise for the children’s performance was overwhelming, with the audiences commenting on the professionalism of the acting and singing as well as the emotional impact of the story (particularly for those members of the audience who lived through the War). Comments from the community included: “Brought back memories, absolutely brilliant” – Roz Dommett “What a group of stars!” – Jean Bagg “I really enjoyed it, a wonderful show, very emotional” – Joan Hale “Brilliant, the children were wonderful!” The school would like to say a big thank you to all of those involved in helping to put on the performance, including all of those parents who helped with making cakes, learning lines and making costumes.
