Notice board The Mid Somerset Camera Club meets every Tuesday evening at the Tor Leisure Centre, Glastonbury at 8.00pm until approximately 10.00 pm from September until May. The group follows an organised and varied programme which includes tuition, visiting, speakers, practical sessions and competitions.

Typically the Club holds several exhibitions every year including one at West Mendip Hospital which started last month and runs until January 2013.

There is a varied programme planned over the coming weeks: • 4th December – George Rekkie – Japan to Norton Fitzwarren – George is a guest from Taunton CC. • 10th December (Monday) – Battle of Sedgemoor – Yeovil CC is hosting this tri-battle with Sydenham and Yeovil.

• 11th December – Landscape theory and still life – Art on a table • 18th December – Chairman’s Evening with a Christmas Theme The Club is affiliated to the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain through the Western Counties Photographic Federation.

Street Epilepsy Action Branch Indoor Carboot/Tabletop Sale The charity participates in The Indoor Carboot/Tabletop Sale at Street Crispin Hall which is open to the public from 10am4pm every Saturday.

Members are keen to help those who want more knowledge about epilepsy in any way and raise more awareness with the charity’s efforts. There will also be members there with stalls

selling items for you to buy.

The charity will have information at hand for those who wish to know about epilepsy in general. If you wish to know about the branch activities throughout the year, come and see us.

The branch’s National Tea Break raised £92.00 on the 30th October at Street Royal British Legion Club Farm Road

Walton WI have had a busy time recently with croquet, table tennis, a trip to see the 'Lion King', craft. scrabble, whist, a quiz evening and two performances by its own singing group.

The October meeting celebrated the group’s thirty-ninth anniversary and now has sixty-three members.

Those wishing to volunteer to help make the branch a further success and for those living and caring with epilepsy, you are always welcome to contact or come along to our events to find out more.

MENDIP CARER SUPPORT GROUP GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH! Since its opening by Glastonbury’s Mayor back in September, the Mendip Carer Support Project (CaSPro) has supported over 20 carers in the local and wider area with issues as diverse as benefit enquiries, housing aid, isolation issues and domestic violence.

Through a partnership with MIND’s Emotional Outreach Project, the group has been able to offer individual support, whether a carer needs help making a telephone call, practical suggestions for organising respite care, or simply a hot drink and a friendly ear.

Many people do not realise they are carers. They may simply see themselves as looking after their husband, wife or partner who may have developed a long term health condition; they may pop out daily to help an elderly neighbour with shopping or

cleaning; they look after children with extra needs. This is NOT an exhaustive list! People who are carers spend a lot of their time giving to those they care about, for no payment. If this sounds like you, then there is lots of support available to help you in your caring role, and also to help you have a life outside of caring. It’s not always easy to find out about the support, and that’s where CaSPro can help.

Every Tuesday from 10am till noon, volunteers and advisors are available in Glastonbury Town Hall. The kettle is always on, there are fun activities to join, or you can simply have a cuppa and a chat. If you need specific help or support, we can help you see the way forward and signpost you to the help you need. There’s no need to book – just turn up and ask for Krissy or Helen.

***Because Christmas Day and New Year’s Day both fall on a Tuesday, this means the group will be cancelled on those days.

We understand how stressful this time of the year can be, so there will be a special group running from 10 – 12 on FRIDAY 28TH DECEMBER, with relaxation and complementary therapy available for all carers.***

Musings from My Garden

By Martin Mudie Well, Christmas is almost upon us and there always seems to be so much going on in peoples’ lives during this most busy month.

The weather outside is not always conducive to gardening so now might be a really good opportunity to take stock of your garden.

I always think that this is best done sitting in a warm room, sitting in a comfortable chair with a notebook and a cat and dog on the lap (the latter is optional). Refreshments too I find are a great help in motivation the ‘little gray cells’ as Poirot would say. To do it properly ask yourselves two questions 1) Was there anything in the garden which you were not happy with?

2) How can I improve it?

Planning even with a rough sketch can be helpful.

Also, - don’t be too ambitious. Each year just improve one section of the garden and gradually the improvements you want will come pass. to Also, when you do get a nice day, make yourself what I would call ‘a winter pot’ to take

you through to the spring.

What you need is 1) a colourful evergreen 2) a flowering plant such as a winter pansy or primrose 3) something trailing 4) P lace somewhere you can either see from the house or pass often outside.

Finally if you are looking for a gift for the gardener in your life, go to one of the larger garden centres where you will find all sorts of goodies from tools to gardening soap to books.

What is the difference between Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas?

By Mike Free Listed buildings If you live in a listed building you have to look after the building to ensure that none of the features are damaged of allowed tofall into dis-repair: failure to do so can envolve the Distict Council enforcing the work and charging you for it! If you wish to carry out any work o it you have to get LISTED BUILDING CONSENT from the District Council for which they make no charge.

This can involve anything from demolition, rebuilding or extensions to new windows, exterior paint finishes and solar panels. All internal structural alterations also have to have permission and this can include anything from removing walls, fireplaces, decorative plaster work or timber.

Some of these alterations can also include Planning Permission for which there is a fee to the Council and in all cases you will have to provide plans showing the work you want to carry out.

Conservation areas.

If you home is in a conservation area, you are resticted in what you can do to the outside, usually at the front. The list of items covered by the rules have changed and now include new windows, chimneys, flues, painting and any alterations to the part of the property facing the public areas. As for Listed buildings above, some of these will only involve LISTED BUILDING CONSENT which SHOULD BE FREE others will involve PLANNING PERMISSION as before.

December News from The Street Society The December meeting of The Street Society will be the members Christmas lunch on 10th December.

After the meal there will be a visit to Millfield House together with the Archivist from Millfield School, Dick Shilton.

The next evening meeting will be as usual at Leigh Road Methodist Church Hall on Tuesday 22nd January 2013.

It will be a talk by Street Society member Michael Goddard on "Early Quaker History". Light refreshments will be provided

before the talk.

December delights from Strode College performers December is a great month to visit the theatre with an abundance of performances to help get you in the festive mood. Students and staff at Strode College in Street will be acting and singing their way towards Christmas with two performances at Strode Theatre this month.

The College’s Performing Arts students will kick things off with their version of Dicken’s `Great Expectations`, which is showing at 7.30pm on Wednesday 5 and Thursday 6 December. This popular Dickens story has been the subject of many TV, film and theatre adaptations, and while Strode’s Miss Havisham may not be as gothic as

Helena Bonham-Carter in the new film version due out this month, she will be strange, sinister and fascinating.

Later in the month, on Wednesday 12 December, the very best musical talent from Strode College will be performing at Strode Theatre. This annual Christmas Concert will mix classical, jazz, rock and seasonal music, and if previous shows are anything to go by there will definitely be a feel good atmosphere in the theatre.

French students find out about MHA During October, a group of 40 students from an Agricultural College in Chateau – Chinn Burgundy in France visited Willcox Close, MHA’s sheltered housing scheme in Glastonbury. The students, aged 17 – 20, were looking at how services are provided in small towns and rural areas in the UK and some of them are planning to work with older people in the future. Peter Baker, the manager, welcomed each group and all information given was translated into French by the accompanying teachers.

After an introduction to MHA, sheltered Housing and the facilities at Willcox Close, students were taken on a guided tour. This featured the famous Monkey Puzzle Tree (see Willcox Close

webpage) resident’s gardens, greenhouse, plaque explaining the history of the scheme and the tree planted this September to mark Willcox Close 40th Anniversary. They also visited one of the flats viewing the facilities and hearing from the residents about their past lives and what it was like to live at Willcox Close.

All students viewed DVD about Methodist Homes (MHA) in the lounge and had an opportunity to ask questions.

They were all given a Willcox Close brochure and a brief written outline of MHA and Glastonbury The Live at Home schemes to take away with them. The students appeared to enjoy their visit and the three residents who welcomed the students into their own homes “thought it was wonderful.”

Forthcoming highlights at Strode Theatre At Strode Theatre in Street you can get into the festive spirit this December with a great variety of different events.

Celebrating cultural diversity Strode College students got the chance to try out some new and interesting activities from around the world recently when they celebrated global diversity during the college’s annual `One World Week`.

Strode’s Student Support team organised the week of activities for students to enjoy whilst thinking about how our lives are influenced and enriched by cultures from around the world.

The week of activities, which included African drumming, didgeridoos, Japanese combat, Latin Zumba, henna hand designs and Chinese ping pong, culminated in an Oxjam concert in Strode Theatre. The concert featured performances from Strode music students, college music groups, the choir and student bands.

The Guardians of Martock Church present 7.30pm, Saturday 22nd December, a Christmas Concert

by Belinda Evans & Friends.

The proceeds will be in aid of St Margaret’s Yeovil Hospice & The Guardians This concert will be in the same format as Belinda’s concert last Christmas, attended by an audience of 295, which raised over £2,000 for St. Margaret’s Somerset Hospice and The Guardians. The concert will begin with folk songs, songs from the shows and operatic & Christmas favourites.

There will be one major difference. Belinda has formed a singing trio with Jenny Bacon and Vanessa Heine. They will perform numbers based on the style and repertoire of The Andrews Sisters.

Belinda’s trio have now made a CD and copies will be on sale at the concert. They are making their concert debut in Bournemouth on 21st December, so ours will be the second public performance. Their piano accompanist will be Colin Hunt who will also play some organ solos.

Plan now for a low-waste, low-cost Christmas

By Nick Cater, Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership For families in Street, Walton, Ashcott and Glastonbury, the simple message of a “green” Christmas is to think ahead and save both resources and your hard-earned cash while still enjoying all the festive fun.

For giving, do ask for wish lists so nothing is cast aside as “rubbish”, think about getting quality gifts that will last, items made from recycled materials, or low-waste presents, from experience days to online magazine subscriptions.

Wrapping can also be low waste, with recycled paper, e-cards, recycling last year’s cards as gift tags, and substituting wool, string or fabric for sticky tape; brown paper packages tied up with string can be among someone’s favourite things. And for décor, why not deck the halls with boughs of holly and much more from the garden, as all that can easily go back through home composting.

Preparation is everything with food, and to avoid waste, such as being careful with portions, buying only what is needed, storing ingredients and freezing leftovers for later, and check out the Love Food Hate Waste website for tasty recipes, while the Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) website has lots more advice for a great Christmas with less waste.

Kerbside waste collections for most Local Reach readers in Glastonbury, Ashcott, Walton and Street are on Wednesdays or Thursdays.

The Christmas and New Year holidays mean that collections move back at least one day so Wednesday 26 December’s collections will take place on Friday 28 December, Thursday 27 on Saturday 29 December, Wednesday 2 on 20

Thursday 3 January and Thursday 3 on Friday 4 January.

Clinical waste collections follow the same pattern, while garden waste collections are suspended in just the Christmas and New Year weeks.

Aside from its usual schedule – open every day except Thursday and Friday – Street Recycling Centre in Farm Lane will close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, and, this year, close at 4pm on Mondays 24 and 31 December.

After Christmas, decorationfree natural trees can be taken to recycling sites for composting; natural trees under 6ft can be put out with garden waste collections for composting, alongside refuse for disposal on usual collection days during 7-18 January, or composted in your garden.

Almost everything festive – trees to bottles and cards, satsuma peel to wrapping paper and foil mince pie cases – can be recycled through home composting, kerbside containers, recycling sites or by taking batteries, plastic bags and more to supermarkets for recycling.

If the weather turns severe, check SWP’s website, Facebook or Twitter feed, or local radio for collection information, and if your collection is missed, put it back out for the next three days as the crews will be doing their best to get back to you if conditions improve.
