Welcome to the November Issue of LocalReach

After a month of festivals in October, you could be forgiven for thinking that perhaps Wells would slow down a little and draw breath – but not a bit of it. November is as full of events and festivities as ever.

Remembrance Day is commemorated in different services across the city; the eagerly anticipated carnival is coming to town; there is the opportunity to soak up music at numerous concerts at the cathedral and, dare I say it, “it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas”!

As always, there are updates on several charities and groups in the city so take a look and see if any are of interest to you; they all would love to see new members.

On that note, we can only include your event, charity or group if we know about it. So send me all the details either by email or contact me via twitter or facebook, including a good quality picture or logo if at all possible. Wells and Mendip Museum, 8 Cathedral Green, Wells BA5 2UE. This month we welcome Phillipa Threlfall from Black Dog in Wells to tell us about her ceramics.

Philippa has been making murals in relief ceramic for over fifty years. She will describe how she came to work in this relatively unusual medium and the techniques that she uses. Her talk also covers both the triumphs and the frustrations of a life spent working for public commissions.

With a range of over 30 stalls of local, handmade crafts and products to browse, your Christmas gifts could be top of the tree this year!

The Artisan Markets will also offer a range of dropin workshops, live demonstrations and multiple opportunities to try your hand at something new with a variety of Craftspeople and artists. WELLS AND DISTRICT FLORAL ART SOCIETY – CHRISTMAS SEASON

On Tuesday 8 November, the club will begin its Christmas season with an open meeting at the Little Theatre, Wells. Doors open at 6.45 pm for 7.30 pm. This is a very popular evening for members, their families and friends. The evening begins with snacks and a glass of wine and is followed by a demonstration with Coral Gardiner titled: A Country Christmas. A farmer’s wife and daughter, Coral is a national demonstrator and a gold medal winner at Chelsea.

Later in the month on Tuesday 29 November we will hold our AGM at St Thomas Church hall at 2.15 pm. This will be followed by afternoon tea served by our committee. Our Christmas celebrations culminate with a lunch at the Swan Hotel on Monday 12 December.

Club members will also be going to the S.W. Area’s AGM held at Warmley. It will be followed by a demonstration by Julia Knight from Norfolk entitled Jack Frost.

As you can see we are a fun and active club and we are always happy to welcome new members and encourage beginners. We begin a new series of demonstrations in January. Look out for details of next year’s events.

ST CUTHBERT'S REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE & PARADE Sunday 13th November 9.45am, Each year the Wells Branch of the Royal British Legion takes part in the Remembrance Sunday Service at St. Cuthbert’s Parish Church, followed by the wreath laying at the War Memorial, after which the Remembrance Parade takes place.

ACE TENNIS COACHING

Anyone taking to the courts at Wells Tennis Club can benefit from the highest standard of Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) coaching available.

Club coach, Kevin Durney is now one of only three instructors in Somerset with a Master Coach Level Five qualification – the highest standard possible from the LTA. To gain the award Kevin undertook a three-year honours degree course with Northumbria University and travelled across the country to learn from those at the top of the tennis world, covering all aspects of the game at the highest level.

Club chair Dan Cooke said: “Well done to Kevin for working so hard over the last few years to boost his qualifications and bring top quality tennis coaching to Wells, for groups and individuals to enjoy.”

SOMERSET SHROUDS OF THE SOMME Until 11th November Wells & Mendip Museum

The 301 figures, representing the soldiers from Somerset or Somerset regiments who were killed during the first four hours on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, were placed by children from 7:30am to 11:30am on Friday 1st July, the same time frame but exactly 100 years after the battle began.

The children were inspired to make the figures after seeing the 19240 Shrouds exhibition, by artist Rob Heard. Hearing about the Coxley School project, Rob Heard came to visit the school to see the children's work, which was an incredible and memorable experience for the whole class, especially as they were able to ask Rob many questions they had about the making of his figures.

On display within Wells and Mendip museum WWI exhibition until 11th November, the figures are for sale by donation to charity for £5-£7.

WELLS REMEMBERS EXHIBITION

This thought provoking exhibition at Wells & Mendip Museum opened in August 2014 to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War, and will continue until 2018.

The exhibition tells the story of the dramatic events of one hundred years ago, beginning with a cleverly constructed walk through the trenches. Subdued lighting, beautifully painted scenes, the barrage of bullets and artillery fire all add to the atmosphere. Displays and artefacts tell the stories of individuals from Wells and the surrounding villages, covering the home front and the fighting fronts.

Material has come from the City Archives, the museum’s collections of images and artefacts, and a wide range of objects have been generously lent to the Wells Remembers Project. These include the Knight Collection - a fascinating collection of weapons, uniforms and equipment.

This is real community venture, put together by a team of volunteers and co-ordinated in partnership with the Blue School and Wells Cathedral School, city archives, Wells Cathedral, the local newspaper, the Royal British Legion and the Bishop’s Palace.

If you haven’t visited it yet, I urge you to go along and have a look.

WELLS LIONS CLUB

16 November This year’s Wells Moat Boat Races were an undoubted success, with thousands of people attending, thousands of pounds raised for local good causes, and overwhelming support offered to keep the event alive.

Individuals, businesses and organisations including Mogers Drewett solicitors and Avon & Somerset Search and Rescue, rallied in response to the appeal for volunteers made by the organisers Wells Lions Club. This year’s principal sponsor, The Swan Hotel, also confirmed it will commit the same support for next year.

The planning process for the 2017 Races will begin with a first meeting of the new organising team on Wednesday 16 November. Anyone interested in helping is welcome to attend and can contact Wells Lions for more information.

This year’s Races generated almost £10,000 for local charities. Wells Lions and their organising partners Wells Air Cadets, made a profit of £6,000 for their respective causes.

Ian Burt, President of Wells Lions said: “This is a free to attend event. We rely totally on sponsorship to cover our costs and the public’s donations to make our profit. We would like to thank everyone who gave so generously to support us.

“And there is more good news. The appeal by Wells Lions for new members also drew an amazing response. To date, a total of 19 local people have declared an interest in joining. It’s not too late to get involved in both Lions membership and next year’s Moat Boat Races.”

WELLS CARNIVAL

Friday 18th November, 7pm It’s Carnival Time! The Wells carnival route starts at Strawberry Way, turning right into Tucker Street, left into Portway, right into Chamberlain Street and from there it turns right into Sadler Street, High Street, Broad Street and then Priory Road, ending at the roundabout.

Diversions will be sign posted around the City and outskirts as previous years.

The organisers recommend that you make your way to the carnival around one hour before it is scheduled to start. This allows time for you to park and take up your position before the carnival procession starts.

JAZZ SKILLS DAY

Sun 20 November, 9.30am-4pm at Cedars Hall Enjoy an inspirational day developing jazz improvisation skills with tutors Edward Leaker and Jack Coward plus special guest tutor, Iain Bellamy. There are graded workshop groups from advanced, experienced jazz players to beginner improvisers Taking place in the new state-of-the-art Cedars Hall, it is open to all ages and abilities with a suggested minimum standard of around grade 4.

The day is aimed at all single line instruments but with particular focus on Saxophone, Trumpet and Trombone.

There is a chance to perform with a professional rhythm section and enjoy a lunchtime gig with Iain Bellamy, plus all participants are entitled to a reduced price ticket to Wells Cathedral School’s Big Band concert starting at 7pm.

WELLS SOUP – BENEFITING THE COMMUNITY

Wells SOUP is all about bringing people together and supporting projects that benefit the community. Wells held its 4th successful lunchtime SOUP in October and presented a cheque for £265 to Beanstalk, the charity that helps children with reading in local schools.

Sheila Flanagan, who made a four minute presentation on behalf of Beanstalk said: “We are very grateful to Wells Independents, who organise the SOUP events. The money we received will help us to help more children with reading in the Wells community.”

Three other charitable organisations made presentations and each will receive £89. These were Project Linus (providing provides quilts and knitted blankets to babies and children in need), the Somerset Guild of Craftsmen (looking at providing training courses in Wells) and community radio station GFM (which is improving the strength of its signal to broaden its broadcast).

This is a real community event. For £5 members of the audience received soup made at The Blue School’s commercial kitchen, bread from Waitrose and drinks provided by Morrisons; they also had the power to change Wells for the better by voting for one of four good causes or charities.

The money on the door was matchfunded by local businesses Greenslade Taylor Hunt, Probusiness and D H James. “We are delighted to support such a simple and effective initiative,” said Chris Goodwin of D H James.

Cathy Judge and John Francis entertained the audience with their acoustic music. “They were superb,” said Ross Young from Wells Independents. “We are very grateful to them and for all the voluntary help and donations that we receive.”

PIANO AND SINGING LESSONS

Having decided to move her successful piano and vocal school out of London to a more rural setting, Alice Wong is now taking students in the Glastonbury, Street and Wells area.

Alice has over 20 years teaching experience and has the ability to pass on her love of music to her many students. This is clear when you look at the high grades they achieve in the ABRSM graded exams.

Alice has won many awards and competitions for both piano and singing. She has been a full time professional performer and entertainer and is now passing on her experience to students of all ages and abilities. She is a firm believer in 'the basics' and teaches music theory alongside the practical. She also teaches those who just want to play piano for fun.

Alice has trained a number of singers, including a recording artist in London and a number of students now attending theatrical schools. She herself still performs regularly, singing and playing many music styles from jazz and classics to pop.

Alice takes the teaching of music seriously and regularly refreshes her technique by attending ABRSM organised seminars and practical courses. She says: "for me to give the best possible teaching, I need to be aware of all the latest styles and techniques".

WELLS IN MOSAIC – MOVING ALONG...

Wells will be captured for decades of future visitors in a six metre diameter mosaic which is being design and built by mosaic artist Ruth Ames-White, who lives and works in the city.

With support from the Wells Civic Society and Wells Lions to kick start the project, a great deal of research and preparatory work has already been carried out but there is much more to do. The project is likely to take two – three years to complete but Ruth said: "I'm really excited about the positive progress being made and thoroughly enjoying the research and design - to which we are hugely indebted to our fantastic team of experts. It will also be great to work with schools and community groups as we move forward. Despite having lived in and around Wells for 45 years, I'm amazed how much of the rich and varied history of our City there is still to learn."

Members of the Wells in Mosaic team recently walked the whole of the historic street pattern of Wells. This will help to distinguish the buildings which will be depicted in the mosaic which will be a major attraction for the City, and will also help visitors to navigate their way around the historic gems.

Steve Wilson, of Wells Lions, first proposed the idea and is delighted to see it has so much support.

"I always knew this was a great project but we've had nothing but praise and positive comments from everyone! We've had modest donations so far, to help us work our way through the inevitable bureaucracy, but once we're at the stage of formally commissioning the work we'll be looking for much more help from the community and beyond to give Wells a beautiful piece of art that should last for many, many generations." he said.

Chris Winter, Chair of the Wells Civic Society said: “This is a long term project and in order to ensure the mosaic lasts many, many years – decades! - once it is in place, we need to support it for the duration of its development but also for the future. We are looking at ways to set up funding in perpetuity to cover maintenance and so on.”

Although the original Care Centre shop was opened in 1996, the family business goes back to 1988 when the company started providing domiciliary care services looking after people in their own homes. The shop was a natural extension to this and has given Oakville a personal insight into their customers’ needs to live independently. With the addition of our Wells shop we can now provide our services across Mendip and beyond.

“We are passionate about helping people remain as independent as they can whilst in their own home,” added Robbie”. We also provide our services within care homes, sheltered accommodation and day centres, and will provide a mini pop up shop for an afternoon or morning if requested for those less mobile. Isolation is becoming widespread and we endeavour to provide services to help reduce this!

IT’S CHILDS PLAY IN WELLS

Wells is lucky to have two fantastic brand new, play areas for children. There is “The Dragon’s Lair”, hidden in the Arboretum of the Bishop’s Palace Gardens. It was officially opened at a special launch event attended by local school teachers, 1st Easton Brownies, Len, the Wells Town Crier and The Bishop of Bath & Wells.

A natural play project, The Dragon’s Lair will introduce children to the stories of the Palace, including the legend of the Dragon and the stories of water at the Palace. The actual carved Dragon is part submerged into the ground and forms a subterranean play and imagination area, which will be perfect for storytelling! The Palace has trained some resident storytellers who will be entertaining children at busy times with tall tales from history. The Dragon’s Lair will have the same opening hours as the Palace & Gardens; 10am-6pm daily.

At the time of going to print, the new play area in the Recreation Ground is due to be finished and opened for November. There have been tantalising glimpses during the construction, including a wooden ‘Bishop’s Palace’ overlooking a host of fantastic play equipment. I’m sure that it will be a wellused and loved facility for children of all ages in the city.

SURVIVING WINTER

Did you know that on average 330 people in Somerset die each winter from causes worsened by cold conditions? In fact, nearly one in eight households in the county live in fuel poverty. What’s more, about 1 in 6 older people in Somerset say they have insufficient social contact and feel socially isolated. But there is something that you can do to make a difference this winter!

‘Surviving Winter’ is an award-winning campaign that encourages people to donate some or all of their unwanted Winter Fuel Payments to other people in their communities who need it most. Take Mrs Kelly for example, who received a Surviving Winter grant last year. She had recently undergone an amputation and was left practically immobile, when a Village Agent found her trying to keep warm by heating a kettle. Mrs Kelly had run out of money to pay for heating, food or her telephone needed to summon medical assistance in an emergency. A Surviving Winter grant quickly restored the heating, and the Village Agent was able to alert other agencies that were able to put in place the care that she needed to recover fully.

A Surviving Winter grant doesn’t just pay for extra heating. It’s hand delivered by one of our small number of trusted local partners, like the Community Council for Somerset’s Village Agents or Age UK Somerset. A Surviving Winter grant becomes the foundation for a new relationship that can help overcome the isolation and loneliness that many older people experience.

What’s Coming Up Early Next Month NATIVITY CRIB FESTIVAL

2-4 December By popular request the Nativity Crib Festival in St Cuthberts Church Wells is returning. Entry is free from 10am-4.30pm on Friday and Saturday, and 11.30-4.30pm on Sunday.

Over 200 Nativity sets from around the world plus an 'Angelic Host' will be displayed. Children can dress up as Angels, shepherds etc for a parental photo call and a musical Christmas village will delight everyone. An added attraction this year is a display of miniatures depicting Christmas carols and songs.

Seasonal refreshments are available throughout.

REINDEER PARADE

Sunday 4 December It is the 10th anniversary of Reindeer Parade, organised by the Wells Rotary, with funds going to Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

Tuesday 6 December A storyteller will be telling seasonal stories, along with a ‘bring and share supper’ and a festive visitor!
