When my father established Kingfisher in 1986 there was one predominant reason that he wanted to set up on his own. Whilst he loved his job, he hated the sales methods of the company he worked for. He was successful, but he never put pressure on himself by setting ‘sales targets’ that, in reality, would simply mean his putting pressure on customers. Instead he would give advice, answer questions honestly, quote a fair price and then leave customers to make up their own minds in their own time.
That exact same philosophy still guides us today. Like my father, I love the job. I love meeting people. I love it that we are still a family firm with family values. And I love the fact that everybody who works for us feels the same way. We consider our customers to be friends and we positively enjoy going the ‘extra mile’ for them. That so much of our business is from referrals and recommendations is a vindication of our approach. If you need windows, doors, a conservatory or cladding and you like the sound of the way we work, do please call us or pop in and see us. We’d love to meet you and help you in any way we can.

End Loneliness in Mendip Campaign – Focus on Carers Mendip District Council, working alongside a number of leading local health and wellbeing service providers, including Health Connections Mendip, Somerset Public Health and Mendip General Practices, has launched the End Loneliness in Mendip campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the support available for older people who are suffering from loneliness. Compass Carers is the latest local organisation to back the campaign. Compass Carers offers support for unpaid carers across Somerset, giving information, advice and guidance as well as emotional support, signposting, training, and a telephone befriending service. A carer is someone of any age who provides support to family or friends, who could not otherwise manage without their help. They may be caring for a relative, partner or a friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or substance abuse issues. Many carers live with the person that they care for and many look after someone who lives independently or is in hospital, in supported accommodation or in a care home. Moira Brunt, from Compass Carers, said: “Often, carers feel isolated in their role. Our support can, in the first instance, make the carer feel they’re not alone. We offer one to one support and facilitate support groups so that carers can share stories and experiences. “Our training programme helps to arm carers with the tools to continue in their caring role. We are able to look within the local area and signpost carers to the most appropriate support services available to them. Our Telephone Befriending Service offers carers a regular call to talk about anything and everything. “If you’re a carer you may wish to come along to a Carer Support Group for a cuppa and meet others in a similar situation - you would be very welcome!” Carer support group meetings take place all across Mendip. To find out more, contact Compass Carers on 01823 255911. For more information about the End Loneliness in Mendip campaign, visit the website: www.endlonelinessinmendip.org.uk

Langport & District Red Cross raised £2225 during Red Cross Week 2017 thanks to the generosity of local communities, who clearly appreciate the service provided by the Red Cross, and of course thanks to the service of some very dedicated volunteer collectors. Two volunteers singlehandedly raised close to £170 each, and several others individually raised over £100. Organisers are however suffering a loss of collectors in our area and are appealing for new volunteers in Somerton, Aller, Babcary, Langport & Huish Episcopi, Long Load, Kingsbury Episcopi, Low Ham, Curry Rivel & Pitney. All they ask is a few hours once a year, during the week which contains 8th May, the birthday of Henri Dunant, Swiss founder. New volunteers are assured of a very warm welcome if they phone 01458 273085 or e-mail cox.cj@btinternet.com. Many British Red Cross buildings are being closed, or replaced with smaller new ones, and our Centre in Langport has been told that it is being looked at as part of this process. We open every morning except Sunday, providing friendship and support to many elderly, and not so elderly, local residents, raising around £7000 annually with donations given for refreshments and the sale of donated goods. In 2016 Centre activities raised over £22 000, so organizers are hopeful that our managers in London will regard us as a valuable fund raiser as well as living up to the Red Cross tradition of helping those in crisis.
Making the first step to making friends or finding that special someone can seem so daunting.

David Sinclair of Acorn Solicitors in Street, has been appointed Chair of Solicitors for the Elderly at this year’s Annual Conference in London. Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE), the national organisation of lawyers specialising in older client law, has announced the appointment of David Sinclair, as Justine Clowes of SAS Daniels LLP steps down after 3 years in the role.
The announcement was made during SFE’s Annual Conference at the end of June, where industry professionals gathered to discuss key changes and issues affecting the older client sector. Highlights included a keynote address by Dame Joan Bakewell on her experiences growing older and interacting with older people in her role as Voice of the Older People. Other topics included the residential nil rate band, promoting social health, and deprivation of liberty. David has been an SFE member since he qualified as a solicitor in 2004. After setting up a successful regional group in Somerset, in 2017 he became one of the youngest solicitors to join the board of SFE Directors. David is co-founder of family-run law firm Acorn Solicitors in Street and Taunton, specialising in Wills, Probate and Powers of Attorney, and was shortlisted for Young Lawyer of the Year in 2009. David commented on his new role: “SFE is a unique organisation, comprised of members who are truly passionate about providing the best service for their clients. It’s a huge privilege for me to act as Chair. “I feel particularly humbled to follow on from Justine Clowes, whose legacy I do not take on lightly. Justine led the way to SFE’s accreditation, a qualification which demonstrates the specialist client care skills that enable lawyers to advise and support older and vulnerable clients. “As Chair, my aim is to turn the accreditation into the benchmark for professionals in the field of older client law.”

With less than one month to go, can local knitters help make this the biggest ever Big Knit for Age UK Somerset? The people of Somerset and North Somerset have been knitting up a storm for the past few months and thanks to their incredible handiwork Age UK Somerset are half-way to hitting their target for this year’s Big Knit. But to make sure they reach their target they need you to click your needles one last time and get your creations handed or sent into the Age UK Somerset office. The miniature hats will then make their way to stores across the country and be paired with innocent smoothie bottles, which will go on sale in October and carry a 25p donation towards Age UK’s vital work to help support older people across the country. Phil Dolan, Chief Executive of Age UK Somerset said: “We’re overwhelmed with how much support this year’s Big Knit has received. But we need to hit our huge 26,000 hat so we’re asking all those out there who want to help make a difference to the lives of older people in Somerset and North Somerset to pick up your needles for one final knit. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a dab hand and can knock a miniature hat up in ten minutes or whether you’ve never knitted a row in your life, we want everybody to get behind the Big Knit and help us smash this incredible target. Come on Somerset, we’re counting on you!” Each winter, one older person dies needlessly every seven minutes because of the cold. Every hat donated to Age UK Somerset will help keep older people warm and well by funding local services such as Befriending to ensure no-one has to spend winter alone. Sim Viney, innocent drinks, said: “We have had such great support for the Big Knit over the years, we are positive knitters across the country will take the challenge to make this year’s event the biggest ever. Even if you’ve never knitted a stich, creating a little hat is a great way to start and won’t take long. We’re massively grateful to everyone who joins in and helps make this year’s campaign a huge success.” For more information on the Big Knit contact Age UK Somerset on 01823 345610 or visit www.ageuksomerset.org.uk. Please send completed hats to Age UK Somerset at Ash House, Cook Way, Bindon Road, Taunton, TA2 6BJ. A new meditation & mindfulness centre has opened in Wells
SoulBreath was founded by Karina Wilson-Meijer and is just a short walk from the high street. The idea for SoulBreath has come from Karina’s many years researching optimal ways in which to nourish body and soul. She believes that meditation is one of the most powerful tools for deep relaxation and healing. As she says: “ We live in stressful times and often lead hectic and busy lives. This stress takes a toll on our health and relationships”. To name a few benefits – just 20 minutes of daily practice is scientifically proven to improve sleep, boost the immune system, increase concentration, reduce stress & anxiety, lower blood pressure, and even aid in weight loss. At SoulBreath want to help you cultivate a positive attitude towards meditation, equip you with the right tools to deepen your practice over time and strip away all the things that can get in the way of connecting with this wonderful life skill. If you have never meditated before but would like to give it a try we can help you build a regular practice, find the right technique but also teach you a bit about the history and the scientific evidence behind the benefits. If you already meditate we can help you deepen your practice, help with breath work techniques and visualisations for self-healing or just provide you with a community of like-minded souls to meditate with. Our greatest wish is to empower people to access their natural inner wisdom and peace, to grow and live a happy life. SoulBreath is located alongside Quantum Life, a new centre for health and wellbeing in the same building – www.quantumlife.org.uk We have the ability to tailor treatment packages to suit individual needs. Mendip Ramblers’ Free Walking Festival: 26th/27th/28th August 2017 This year’s free festival of walking will be based in the small village of Butleigh, near to Glastonbury and Street. The village has an interesting history and some fine buildings. Butleigh Court, which was abandoned for many years and has now been brought back into use, is noted for its interesting architecture including the tall carved chimney stacks, which are all different. The 14th century Church of St Leonard was restored and extended in the middle of the 19th century. It has been designated by English Heritage as a grade II* listed building. The Admiral Hood Monument stands on a nearby hill offering fine views of the surrounding Somerset countryside. There will be four walks of varying lengths on each day. The short morning walk, 3 to 4 miles, can be extended after lunch by joining the short afternoon walk. The group hopes that the availability of two short walks will encourage walkers of all abilities to join them. Morning walks start at 10.00am and the afternoon walk at 1.30pm. As usual, tea and cake with be available at the end of each walk. For more information go to: www.mendipramblers.co.uk

‘Sea Dragons of Street’ Exhibition
This September, the Alfred Gillett Trust are hosting a free pop-up exhibition of fossilised ichthyosaurs found in Street as part of the national Heritage Open Days initiative. From 7-10 September, the public can view the fossils and learn about how they were found and what they tell us about the local environment. There will also be children’s craft and learning activities. 19 large ichthyosaur fossils will be on display, as well a selection of smaller fossils found in the local area. Known as ‘sea dragons’, ichthyosaurs were dolphin-like marine reptiles which swam in the warm seas which covered Somerset around 200 million years ago. Street is known internationally for the quality and quantity of the fossils found in the local blue lias rock. The fossils were found in local quarries in the 19th century by Alfred Gillett, a cousin of the founders of Clarks the shoemakers. Clark family members were also interested in the fossils which were being discovered in the area, and this impressive collection gradually developed. First displayed in Glastonbury Town Hall in 1880, the fossils were soon moved into a purposebuilt Geological Museum in Crispin Hall in Street, which was opened in 1887. Noted geologists and academics visited the collection to study them, along with tourists and residents in the locality of Street. Such was the importance of the collection and the affection held for the fossils in the area that the newly formed Street Urban District Council chose the ichthyosaur as their symbol in 1894. It is still used today by local societies and associations. The fossils were finally taken off public display in 1978 when they were moved into storage for conservation. Now, for the first time in nearly 40 years, locals and visitors alike will get a chance to come face-to-face with the famed sea dragons. The exhibition is open to the public from Thursday 7 to Sunday 10 September from 10am to 5pm. Entrance is free, but donations towards the care and future display of the fossils would be gratefully received. For more details visit the website at www.alfredgilletttrust.org/hod17 or ring the Alfred Gillett Trust 01458 444060.

COMMUNITY NOTICE BOARD
Glastonbury Chamber of Commerce Glastonbury Chamber of Commerce was formed in 2016. Whilst there had been Chambers in the past, these had not been active for a few years. The decision to establish a Chamber again was instigated by the decision of all of the town’s then High Street Banks in 2015 to close their offices. The effect of their announcements drew several businesses together to create a campaign to ensure that the town had access to Banking services. The most visible result of this campaign was the opening of a branch of the Nationwide Building Society, however this was not the only result. The campaign drew the media’s attention to Glastonbury, the town, and the realisation that it is not just the name of a Festival held in a muddy field every June. Although it is a long time since the last Bank closed, Glastonbury, the town, is still getting featured in the national media as a place for a weekend break as it is a very special place. Since its foundation, Glastonbury Chamber of Commerce has grown rapidly, with over 70
members and the “Voice of Business” for the town. The Chamber is a conduit for funding for businesses, particularly start-ups and those with training needs. The membership fees for Chamber are kept low, so as not be a barrier for membership. Members get discounts on some events, and also on purchases from some fellow members. These benefits can easily exceed the annual membership fee. Our first anniversary party is being held on Thursday, July 27th: a Strawberries and Prosecco evening at the Rural Life Museum. On Monday, 7th August we have a Breakfast meeting at Middlewick Cottages. If you wish to attend any of our events, please visit our website: www.glastonburychamber.co.uk Basically, being a member of Glastonbury Chamber is informative, rewarding and fun.

Beware: Your Barbecue Could Cause a Blaze Enjoy that summer barbecue but take care to not start a fire by discarding the ashes into your rubbish bin or black sacks, Somerset Waste Partnership is warning. Drench ashes with water or let them cool completely to avoid a rubbish fire threatening your home and family or causing a blaze in a waste truck or at a landfill site. The last major landfill fire in Somerset took days to put out, while across the UK, people have died in fires that began in rubbish bins. It is not just barbecue coals. Never add these danger items to your rubbish: • Hot ash or part-burned materials from domestic or garden fires or barbecues. • Used portable barbeques whose charcoal may not be completely cold. • Household or vehicle batteries that may short out or cause sparks. • Broken glass not carefully wrapped or bagged could act as a magnifying lens. • Aerosols may get hot or be pierced during the collection and landfill process. The advice is simple in each case: • Let ash and portable barbecues completely cool, or fully damp down with water. • Recycle vehicle batteries through any one of Somerset’s 16 recycling sites. • Take household batteries to recycling sites or high street stores that collect them. • Carefully wrap and bag broken glass, which should also never go in recycling boxes. • Use up aerosols completely, do not squash, and then add them to recycling boxes. A SWP spokesperson said: “It is simple to stay safe with rubbish and prevent fires. Fully damp down the barbecue and think through the risks so you do not put your loved ones in danger.” For more about what to recycle, where and how, visit: www.somersetwaste.gov.uk.

Tired, gritty, sore eyes?
Most of us will suffer with these symptoms from time to time but they can make our lives miserable if they are frequent. There is no need to put up with the irritation and discomfort because a knowledgeable Optician will be able to give you advice. If we exclude active infection like conjunctivitis, gritty and sore eyes are usually caused by a lack of lubrication quality of the tears which should coat the front surface of the eye. Normal tears are made up of three different layers, a mucin layer, a watery layer and an oily layer. If one of these layers is inadequate or substandard, the individual will suffer varying degrees of dry eye symptoms. The symptoms of sore, gritty or stinging eyes are often made significantly worse by environmental factors. Air conditioning or a hot dry atmosphere will cause tears to evaporate more quickly. Working on a computer causes a reduction in blink rate by over 50%, again causing the front surface of the eye to become dry. These symptoms may be relieved purely with the use of lubricant eye drops. The drops should be instilled regularly to stabilise the tear film rather than using once the eyes have become sore! Drops should be PRESERVATIVE FREE If symptoms are more constant, a holistic approach is required. There may be associated blepharitis (eyelid condition) which requires treating with lid cleanser. Individuals may benefit from the regular use of a heated “Eyebag and omega 3 and 6 dietary supplements which have been found to improve tear production in many people. Thea Pharmaceuticals produce modern and effective tear supplements and lid hygiene products which are free from preservatives.

Independence In Your Own Home With Suttons Stairlifts If you have difficulty getting up and down stairs you are not alone. The decision to install a stairlift is sometimes a difficult one to take but, when compared with the alternative of moving, or living on only one level of their home, many people have found a stairlift to be their preferred solution. Suttons Stairlifts is a family-run business dedicated to providing a fair and ethical service with a nopressure selling policy. We offer a range of new or refurbished Handicare stair lifts, either straight or curved in the Somerset and Mendip area. We also offer a rental option for straight stairlifts as well as servicing and safety checks, repairs and removals. You are also choosing an ISO Quality approved product that conforms to the ethical business practices required by the British Healthcare Trades Association. It is a popular misconception that stairlifts are fitted to the wall, they are usually fitted to the staircase itself. Most lifts will only take between 2-4 hours to install. All Handicare stairlifts have safety sensors on the power pack and footplate; these are designed to stop the lift if it meets any obstruction. If there is a power cut your stairlift will continue to operate for approximately 10 trips using the internal batteries. Handicare stairlifts offer features such as a powered swivel seat and powered folding footplate; these can make using a stairlift even easier by allowing you to operate these functions at the touch of a button.. Even if you don’t need them now, they may be something you will benefit from in the future. We will visit you to survey the staircase and conduct a user assessment leaving you the leaflets and prices so you can make the decision in your own time. Whilst stairlifts are very simple to use they are mechanical devices and do require annual servicing and maintenance. With our inclusive and comprehensive 12 or 24 month warranty and 365 day coverage you can be assured of a first-class and personal service.

Back2Market House Clearance and Cleaning Specialist
Thinking about having a Clearance can seem like a daunting prospect. How do you go about it? Who do you choose? How do you know which companies are reputable? Every day you can see posts on Social Media where people are asking to pay someone to do a ‘tip run’ for them. Although some people who respond to these posts will be licenced and insured, many won’t be. Asking for someone to provide you a service in this way doesn’t give you the information you need – who you are dealing with, whether they have got a Waste Carriers Licence and are they insured. You may be tempted to go for a Company or Service who offer free Clearances. But you should consider that you may have items of some value that should be offset against the cost of clearing other items or which you would be paid for. Secondly, someone offering a free Clearance is unlikely to take absolutely anything and everything. It is likely they will pick through what you have, and only clear what is commercial to them. This will then leave you with all the rubbish and waste that you will still have to dispose of – so could end up being a more expensive option. You might ring round a few Companies and get quotes over the phone. But, how can anyone quote for a clearance without seeing it? Again, there may be items that can be sold on or recycled which should be offset against the cost. So, you may consider one of the few Companies that are offering fixed price Clearances based on size, weight and time. But, do you know what 1000kg looks like? Would you know how much time that’s going to take to clear? Okay, the difference can either be paid or credited back on the day, but it’s a lot to work out, and you pay up front. Plus, again there will be no allowance for items of commercial value. The best way to arrange a Clearance is to call Companies and ask them to come and visit, to provide you with an accurate quotation by actually seeing what needs clearing. Back2Market Clearance and Cleaning Specialists provide free, no obligation quotations for all of our Clearance and Cleaning Services. We pay for quality clearances, and offset costs of clearing rubbish/waste where there are also items that do have a commercial market..

Run by Glastonbury based charity Children’s World, this year’s week will run from 7th - 11th August. A huge variety of workshops and events for toddlers to teenagers are on offer. These include: a night walk, cookery, music, parkour, drama, Red Brick Youth, birds of prey experience, storytelling, circus skills, science experiments, farms days and, new this year, Scrapstore Creations. The whole community, from age 0 to 100, is also invited to join in the flash mob finale! Full details of all workshops and how to book can be found on the booking form below, at: www.childrensworldcharity.org or on the Off the Streets Facebook page. Charity director Paddy Hill said “We're really pleased at how well Off the Streets has been going. It’s our 4th one and its popularity increases every year. We advise people book early to guarantee a place!” "We'd also like to thank Glastonbury Town Council's Youth Committee and the Somerset Community Foundation - their support has again made this year's event possible." Children's World has been working in schools and special schools since 1981. Their work has taken them all over the UK as well as overseas. Locally they are most famous for running the Glastonbury Children's Festival from 1981-2012. "We had to take a break from the children's festival as the production costs were increasing year on year." said Paddy, "However, we knew a lot of locals were disappointed and we've always said we would bring it back if a viable opportunity came along. We've recently been having chats with our friends at Paddington Farm and we're hoping to make an announcement soon!" Off the Streets 2017 Monday 7th August

Connor Gearty The Mechanics of Art
Blue Cedar are pleased to announce that we shall be showing the works of Connor Gearty during August. The essence of art lies in the experimentation and discovery. Gearty finds comfort in what's outside of his recognizable and trusted trains of thought, working with materials and methods he has never experienced before. Gearty's mistakes are how he measures himself. Welcoming mistakes and enjoying the process of discovery. Gearty enjoys creating mixed media pieces that incorporate many kinds of different materials, be that using pencil and ink, tea, paint, print or even 3D most recently using inks and exploring strong bold contrast. In turn, this has allowed him to progress and develop as an artist through constantly learning and growing. The exhibition is open from 5th August, Monday to Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm. Blue Cedar Print Works is situated at 3 Silver Street, Glastonbury BA6 8BS (just up the alleyway opposite the church on the High Street).
