Bring On Spring, But Not Unwanted Kittens

Spring has arrived, and with it can come problems for cat owners. Street Veterinary Centre has advice for all cat owners to protect their pets from unwanted pregnancies, and an offer of help. Vet Jade Clark said: “Cats are seasonal breeders. As the days become longer they come into season". Now is the time to take action to prevent unwanted litters, by early summer animal rescue centres are overwhelmed with unwanted kittens. Jade added: “According to recent surveys 85% of cat litters are unplanned. Cats can become pregnant from as early as four months of age. Spaying prevents unwanted pregnancies. “The added benefits of spaying your cat are the prevention of ovarian cancer and the reduced risk of two others cancers, of the cervix and mammary glands.” Jade continued. Jade stressed the importance of neutering male cats as well. “Castrating a Tom cat will help to prevent him fighting, and urine marking. Fighting is linked to abscesses, injuries and infection, and it’s a known fact that most cat victims of road accidents are un-neutered Toms. Castration also prevents testicular cancer.” Street Vets senior vet Julian Cosser said: “Our practice supports local animal charities and promotes their good work, so we are subsidising cat neutering throughout April and May and including free micro chipping. It’s a simple and affordable operation. If you are a caring cat owner and want to talk to us, please visit us at 187 High Street, BA16 0NE, or phone us on 01458 442398.

Somerset Residents Watch Out As Probate Fees Are Set To Soar

David Sinclair, partner of Acorn Solicitors and Chairman elect of Solicitors for the Elderly is disgusted at the new hike in Probate fees set to increase in May this year. A Grant of Probate gives someone the authority to administer a person’s estate after death. This authority is granted by the government and therefore their fee is required up front before Probate can be granted. Claire Davies, from the board of directors at Solicitors for the Elderly has said:“Solicitors for the Elderly as an organisation is extremely disappointed to see that the consensus to reject the proposed probate fees has been ignored. For the 62% of estates that use a solicitor, probate registry performs a purely administrative role, and the value of the estate has no bearing on the work undertaken. To burden larger estates with a significantly larger fee is an unfair form of taxation.” Currently, a fixed fee of £155 (if using a Solicitor) is charged no matter what the size of the estate. In May, the fees increase depending on the value of an estate. The lowest fee being £300.00 and the highest fee being £20,000.00 for an estate worth more than £2 million. With the ever increasing house prices, it is rare that a person will be paying the lowest fee of £300.00. Charities, law groups and campaigners say that these fees are excessive and unjustified. David Sinclair has said:‘Property is often people’s primary asset, and they have little cash to pay for higher probate fees, on top of other necessities such as inheritance tax, funeral bills and the use of a solicitor. The increase in probate fees will place a burden on families and is likely to put people who are vulnerable and/or elderly at risk. I fear that people might be persuaded to take steps to avoid probate fees, even if it leaves them with insufficient assets to provide for themselves for the rest of their life.” David Sinclair urges everyone to sign the petition stating that we believe that the proposed increases are unfair, unjustified and excessive. https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/188175 Read More: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4302772/Families-warned-Budget-stealth-tax. html#ixzz4bsps6bkG

What’s In A Brand?

To most people a “brand” is the name given to a product or service from a specific source and is similar to the current meaning of the word “trademark.” A ‘Brand’ can be associated with a level of expectation, quality and style. This perceived quality over a ‘generic’ product tends to mean that there is a higher price tag attached to the product. Some of this cost may go to the designer in the form of royalty—the charge for allowing the company to use his or her name. The manufacturer of the ‘Brand’ is therefore expected to maintain the quality of the product. Eyetech has balanced the desire for ‘Brands’ by stocking niche ranges of frames, ranges that have features to talk about. For example Eyetech stock hand painted Mattisse frames and Paulo Pilipe frames with a unique patented side design. Eyetech has also sourced their own range of frames and through a staff competition chosen the name of the range of their ‘brand’ to be ‘BEES KNEES’ or BK. BEES KNEES are stylish, functional and high quality frames but without the extra cost of a traditional brand. Eyetech directors have selected the styles and colours, specified the quality of materials and workmanship, therefore enabling the price of the range to be great value for such a quality product.

Fund Raising Fish & Chips

On Saturday 22 April Somerset sports charity, TS5C, is organising a Grand Fish & Chip Supper at the celebrated Knights Fish Restaurant in Glastonbury, along with a fabulous raffle. The event starts at 7.30pm at the Northload Street restaurant in Glastonbury. The money raised will go directly towards providing grants to young aspiring athletes in Somerset. Alan Gloak, chairman of TS5C said: “The funding that we are able to give our young athletes is reliant solely on the support of local companies and individuals – we receive nothing from the government. We have a few hopefuls for Tokyo in 2020 but they need help with the training and equipment costs.” Tickets are £20 each, including a three course meal. Available from Knights or www.ts5c.org, or email: a.gloak@btinternet.com

These mornings are a popular event on the first Saturday of each month, offering coffee and cakes, super bargains in clothing on the Thrift stalls, and throughout the spring and summer a good choice of outdoor plants for your garden on sale at the front door. And always a selection of books to browse through. Church Open Day will be held on Saturday 8th April to mark the completion of our building project Our building work will be finished shortly and we are planning an Open Day for Saturday, 8th April. If you have walked along the lane behind the Church recently, you will be aware that extensive demolition and rebuilding have been happening. Everyone is now invited to come and look around the new facilities that have been provided for church and community use. More detail of this special day will be given on a poster at the front door nearer the date. Don’t hesitate to come; this will be informal and friendly. The May Day Bazaar will take place on Saturday, 29th April, from 10 am to 3 pm. Maypole Dancing is at 12 noon and 2:30 pm. This year’s highlights will include perennial and annual plants, hot and cold refreshments, an instant raffle, cakes, jewellery, toiletries, crafts, bric-a-brac, toys, jigsaws, books, games, and tombolas. The Church has been running “May Day” without a break, on or close to May 1st, since 1893. In that year our forebears commissioned Ropers Foundry in Leigh Road (now Foundry Garage) to make them a maypole, and that same maypole is still used every year, and the children still dance the same traditional dances around it. Dance started in early March this year.

Shoot for the Moon this Easter

Shoot for the moon this Easter! - Streetís slimming expert says aiming high and getting support is the key to success A local expert is urging people starting a weight loss programme this Easter to have faith in aiming for their ideal weight, after a study found that people who set ambitious targets lose almost twice as much weight in 12 months. Dawn, a Slimming World Consultant for the Glastonbury and Street groups, is preparing for a busy Easter as many people vow to make this the year that they achieve their dream weight. She says the latest research conducted by Slimming World shows that people shouldnít feel limited by past weight loss attempts and should instead aim high for weight they would love to be, and get the support they need to achieve it. The national study of 24,457 people with a BMI (body mass index) in the obese category looked at the impact of target setting, and found that the more ambitious the target, the more weight people lose - regardless of their starting weight. Dawn says her Slimming World group is the best place to get motivational support along with care and camaraderie to learn to make simple, healthy changes to lose weight and keep it off. She says: No dream is out of reach at Slimming World. Whether itís to lose ten pounds or ten stone, fit into a size 12 dress or a suit youíve grown out of, run around with the kids or run a 10k race - together, me and the members of our Slimming World group can help to get you there! We never tell members what they should weigh, and so all new members chose their own target weight when they join. However much youíd love to lose, we know how much more motivating it is when youíre aiming for a weight you dream to be rather than a weight youíre told you should be or think is easily achievable - and now we have the research to prove it! I know what itís like to struggle with your weight and, having lost 7st as a Slimming World member myself after joining in 2010, I also understand what a huge difference understanding how slimmers feel and offering the right kind of support can make to your chances of achieving your weight loss goals. It is my dream to see my members achieve their dreams. In my group, members set targets, share recipes, challenges and solutions and celebrate success together, which is so important to a successful journey. Itís all about support, care, encouragement and fun - and I firmly believe thatís why we regularly see members achieve their weight loss dreams too. In group they learn that slimming down doesnít have to mean giving up any of their favourite foods, and in fact they can fill up on healthy, hearty, delicious meals just by making small changes to the way they are cooked and prepared. Many also find they have so much more energy, and become much more active by starting small and finding something fun - whether itís walking the kids to school, a dance class or washing the car - it all absolutely counts!

Mendip Ramblers’ Free Walking Festival: 26th/27th/28th August 2017

This year’s free festival of walking will be based in the small village of Butleigh, near to Glastonbury and Street. The village has an interesting history and some fine buildings. Butleigh Court, which was abandoned for many years and has now been brought back into use, is noted for its interesting architecture including the tall carved chimney stacks, which are all different. The 14th century Church of St Leonard was restored and extended in the middle of the 19th century. It has been designated by English Heritage as a grade II* listed building. The Admiral Hood Monument stands on a nearby hill offering fine views of the surrounding Somerset countryside. There will be four walks of varying lengths on each day. The short morning walk, 3 to 4 miles, can be extended after lunch by joining the short afternoon walk. We hope that the availability of two short walks will encourage walkers of all abilities to join us. Morning walks start at 10.00am and the afternoon walk at 1.30pm. As usual, tea and cake with be available at the end of each walk. For more information go to: www.mendipramblers.co.uk

Independence In Your Own Home With Suttons Stairlifts If you have difficulty getting up and down stairs you are not alone. The decision to install a stairlift is sometimes a difficult one to take but, when compared with the alternative of moving, or living on only one level of their home, many people have found a stairlift to be their preferred solution. Suttons Stairlifts is a family-run business dedicated to providing a fair and ethical service with a nopressure selling policy. We offer a range of new or refurbished Handicare stair lifts, either straight or curved in the Somerset and Mendip area. We also offer a rental option for straight stairlifts as well as servicing and safety checks, repairs and removals. You are also choosing an ISO Quality approved product that conforms to the ethical business practices required by the British Healthcare Trades Association. It is a popular misconception that stairlifts are fitted to the wall, they are usually fitted to the staircase itself. Most lifts will only take between 2-4 hours to install. All Handicare stairlifts have safety sensors on the power pack and footplate; these are designed to stop the lift if it meets any obstruction. If there is a power cut your stairlift will continue to operate for approximately 10 trips using the internal batteries. Handicare stairlifts offer features such as a powered swivel seat and powered folding footplate; these can make using a stairlift even easier by allowing you to operate these functions at the touch of a button.. Even if you don’t need them now, they may be something you will benefit from in the future. We will visit you to survey the staircase and conduct a user assessment leaving you the leaflets and prices so you can make the decision in your own time. Whilst stairlifts are very simple to use they are mechanical devices and do require annual servicing and maintenance. With our inclusive and comprehensive 12 or 24 month warranty and 365 day coverage you can be assured of a first-class and personal service.

We Are Moving, To Help Keep Your Movement Pain Free! Street Chiropractic Clinic is delighted to announce that from Monday March 27th we will be moving to our new premises at: 141c High Street, Street. (Above Boots Opticians, and Glenys Redwood at Trees dressmaking shop). Car parks in Cranhill Road and Goswell Road provide plenty of parking and the new location is nearer to the High Street shops. Street Chiropractic Clinic has been providing high quality treatment for a wide variety of muscle, bone & joint problems since it was established 25 years ago. We understand the impact that musculoskeletal pain can have on lifestyle – from not being able to work, or play sport, through to the frustration of needing help to perform day to day activities. Our experienced chiropractors provide a comprehensive initial examination and assessment to discover the underlying cause of the presenting problem. Following discussion and explanation of their findings, and understanding the patient’s goals for treatment, an individually tailored, evidence based treatment and exercise programme will be formulated. A variety of treatment approaches, based on the most-up-to-date evidence available, may be employed, to deliver clinically effective treatment. For chronic, long term, or recurrent conditions, advice can be offered on maintaining and improving mobility, keeping pain free, and helping to minimise the occurrence and impact of further issues. We look forward to welcoming all our past, present and potential future patients and their families to our new clinic!
