Another month closer to Christmas and already groups and societies are bringing us a selection of fayres and fund raisers in preparation for this busy time of year. As autumn sets in there are plenty of fun things to do whether it is singing with the Coastline Singers or Mudlarks, learning a new hobby with writing workshops at the Princess Theatre or keeping fit through walking groups, biking or aerobic exercise. Bridgwater Arts Centre are celebrating their 70th Birthday in October and there are a wide variety of events organised at the centre which may be of interest to many people from the local area. I am really encouraged to see so many people wanted to get involved with projects and to share that information via Local Reach. Burnham Bereavement café is a safe and welcoming space for anyone affected by loss or bereavement.

The bereavement may be recent, or may have occurred some time ago, and still be painful. Bereavement café is for anyone, at any stage of their journey. The Bereavement café offers a safe space to come and appreciate the company of other people who have also experienced bereavement and loss in their lives.

It’s a space to relax; to chat, to drink tea and eat cake, and to tell and listen to each other’s stories, to speak of loved ones. An opportunity to come and share the company of others who have also experienced loss and bereavement in their lives, and understand something of the journey. A space to discuss the things that are difficult about grief, and the things that have been most helpful in facing the changes, adjusting and moving towards the 'new normal.' Burnham-on-Sea & Highbridge Town Council Civic Service Each year the Mayor of Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge holds a Civic Service.

The afternoon of Sunday 2 October 2016 will find the High Sheriff of Somerset, The Honourable Edward WG Bayntun-Coward ESQ, along with invited Mayor’s and Chairmen of Towns and Parishes in and around Somerset, processing from the Princess Theatre & Arts Centre to St Andrew’s Church for this years’ service.

Also, by invitation, representatives of Clubs and organisations within the towns along with members of the Town Council, past Mayors and Civic Award winners attend the service.

During the service which contains hymns, poems, prayers and music, the Civic Awards are presented to this years nominated winners. Each year the Town Council requests residents of the towns to nominate people they consider worthy of receiving an award for voluntary dedication and outstanding service to the community. The nominations are considered at the Town Projects Committee by a process of elimination – a very difficult task. 2016 sees the 29th year and the 121st award will be presented. The award is in the form of an engraved lapel badge a framed certificate and a citation.

The Civic Service is followed with invited guests enjoying afternoon tea at the Princess Theatre and Arts Centre.

Bridgwater Arts Centre Help celebrate its 70th Birthday!

Bridgwater Arts Centre pull out all the stops to celebrate their 70th Birthday with a programme of exciting special events this October. Between the 7th and 14th October Bridgwater Arts Centre present an exciting schedule for the community to get involved in to celebrate their milestone birthday. From an interactive timeline exhibition to live opera experience to a big birthday bonanza family day, the center will be a hive ofcreative activity.

For one night the Arts Centre turns into a time machine and the audience are transported back to the very first performance at the Arts Centre - an opera. Every detail, from the decor, the stewards, to the food and drink will be authentically styled from 1946. Audience are urged to dress in the fashion of the time, a pre drink and authentic 1946 canapes served as part of the ticket. The professional male and female opera singers have been provided by Garsington Opera and will be singing, with piano accompanist in a salon style. Expect to hear extracts from the most popular operas. Truly a once in a lifetime experience! Apex Park, Highbridge Outdoor Gym Designs Unveiled Designs to install a state of the art outdoor gym in Apex Park, Highbridge have been unveiled following a successful tender process. The outdoor gym costing £30,000 is being funded by RLT 2 and 3 developer contributions held by Sedgemoor District Council.

The modern outdoor gym will include a cross trainer, arm pull down, shoulder press, spinning bike, chest press, seated rower, dips and leg raise unit, leg press and sit-up bench, welcome sign and adequate space for warming up/cooling down. The project will also see a new link path created near to the existing play facilities together with the gym equipment installed within.

All of the new gym equipment will feature innovative QR codes which take users to instructional videos when scanned using any smart phone. Works are expected to commence in October 2016 and take roughly two weeks, subject to weather conditions. All other Apex Park facilities will remain accessible during this time. A spokesperson for Sedgemoor District Council said ‘We are delighted with the new outdoor gym designs. These fantastic facilities will be free to use and suitable for all ages and abilities. At a time when people are struggling to find money for gym fees or sporting activities this is a great way to get or stay healthy without having to spend a single penny.

Sedgemoor District Council would like to thank The Friends of Apex Park and residents for working with us to support this fantastic project. We are planning a personal trainerled event for the grand opening so look out for further information nearer the time’.

Best year for Britain's butterfly since 1930s The once-extinct large blue butterfly, reintroduced to the UK in 1984, flew in its highest numbers for at least 80 years this summer, due to the collaboration of the Large Blue Project, Somerset Wildlife Trust, Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust and their project partners, belying widely-reported warnings that 2016 could be the worst year on record for British butterflies.

Thanks to meticulous conservation management, south-west England now supports the largest concentration of large blues known in the world. Somerset Wildlife Trust’s Green Down and Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust and Royal Entomological Society’s Daneway Banks saw over 10,000 adult large blues in 2016, according to Professor Jeremy Thomas, chair of the Joint Committee for the Restoration of the Large Blue Butterfly - which equates to roughly 60% of the UK population. Together they laid more than a quarter of a million eggs on the abundant thyme and marjoram flowers.

The large blue has a bizarre life-cycle, having fed for three weeks on the flowerbuds of wild thyme or marjoram, the caterpillar produces scents and

songs that trick red ants into believing it is one of their own grubs, and is carried underground into the ants nest and placed with the ant brood. The caterpillar spends the next 10 months feeding on the grubs before pupating in the nest the following year and then emerging to crawl above ground as a butterfly.

Despite over 50 years of effort to halt its decline, the large blue butterfly was pronounced extinct in Britain in 1979. Its reintroduction in 1984 was based on the discovery that large blue caterpillars can only survive in the nest of one particular species of red ant, Myrmica sabuleti. Changes in countryside management were responsible for the extinction.

Alterations in grazing left grassland too tall and shady for the heat-loving red ant.

Reserves Manager for Somerset Wildlife Trust, Mark Green said: “Large blue numbers had declined significantly two years ago, due to unfavourable weather conditions. But, thanks to the project partners creating and maintaining a number of wellconnected core sites, the butterfly has now bounced back to record numbers. I feel proud to play a part in this highly successful project, which gives me hope that we can reverse the declines of other vulnerable species.”

Worst ever few weeks for Virus attacks and Fraudulent Phone Calls For the last few weeks we have seen a massive increase in virus attacks and fake IT phone call scams.

People who would not normally expect such issues to happen to them have been caught out in a bad way. Armed with personal information, scammers have been ringing people, often pretending to be from organisation such as Microsoft, BT, TalkTalk and so on and have convinced their target to allow them onto their computer to fix some (non-existent) issues. Perhaps even worse is the re-incarnation of Ransomware - this particularly nasty type of virus encrypts data files such as documents and pictures, and renders them useless unless a ransom is paid. Words I often hear from customers are "It won't affect me, I know what to look out for" or similar, but quite often even the most astute person can be tricked. We have dealt with a number of new customers recently who previously would not have considered using an IT support company for various reasons, but unfortunately, their systems were woefully inadequate at protecting against such threats. If you have data on your computer that is very important to you, then I would recommend employing an experienced IT company over friends or family, who often mean well, but frequently cannot guide people with the right information to protect them fully. Theatre and Writing Workshops

The Princess Theatre Company are holding a series of theatre and writing workshops starting this autumn.

The workshops aim to cover characterisation and then using the characters go on to devise a piece of theatre.

Organiser Kim Cook tells us ‘the workshops are open to both beginners and people who have been writing, perhaps plays, or another genre. We are keen to encourage those interested in writing, in making theatre and actors to come together to create a true piece of community theatre, which we hope to perform next year.

Following the successful Trading Local project earlier in the year, it was obvious just how much talent we had in Burnham and Highbridge and it would be great to harness this in another great project.’ The workshops are free, but you do need to register your place. Dates are Saturday 15th October, 5th November and 12th November from 10am till 1pm at the Princess Theatre.

Berrow Conservation Group

As the days shorten our group meets indoors for a series of varied and interesting talks. Members and nonmembers are all welcome. Our first talk, in October, is entitled 'From Plant to Plate'. Sue Applegate will be giving an illustrated talk providing an insight into the UK Fresh Produce Industry and how it works to supply Farm assured food to Farmers Markets and Supermarkets. Sue will highlight the changes taking place, and the challenges of the future, World Population Growth, Climate Change, and Efficient Management of Water. The talk is on Tuesday Evening October 25th at Berrow Village Hall commencing at 7.30pm. There is a small fee for non-members £3.00, members £1.00, light refreshments included.

2 Minute Beach Clean

Sedgemoor District Council is proud to be 'sponsor' of Litter Free Coast and Sea Project's 2-minute beach clean boards - the first along the Somerset Coastline. The boards will be appearing at Burnham-on-Sea and Berrow from September. These boards encourage beach users to spend two, or more, minutes picking up litter from the beach and sharing their finds on twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #2minuteBeachClean. The boards remind people help keep beaches clean and promote a shared responsibility to minimise litter. SDC beach wardens will be looking after the signs at Burnham on Sea and Berrow each day and making sure they are in a sensible place where they are not at risk of people tripping over them or blowing away.

So, roll up your sleeves to help rid our beaches of marine litter and plastic pollution - every piece of litter removed from the beach matters. So it doesn't matter if you do 2 minutes or 30!

Harriet Yates-Smith, Somerset's Litter Free Coast and Sea Project Officer said "Approximately 8 million individual pieces of marine litter enter the sea every day threatening our ecosystems, marine life and communities. The 2 minute beach clean boards give everyone the opportunity to get involved, look after their environment and help keep Burnham on Sea beautiful.

The stations provide all the equipment required, including plastic bags, a litter picker and information on keeping safe whilst cleaning. So we're inviting everyone to get involved because small actions really can make a difference."

A Sedgemoor District Council spokeman said "we are pleased that the 2 minute beach clean boards are now on display. Sedgemoor, along with the Bathing Water Quality Group, are looking at various ways of trying to improve the quality of the water at Burnham on Sea and this is just one way in which residents and visitors can help."

Gardening Jobs for October

October is a good month for planting trees, hedges, roses, shrubs and most fruit. The soil is still warm and the plants should settle in well. Always prepare the ground well before planting.

• Continue deadheading your flowering plants and remove any dead stems on perennials.

• Clear away bean sticks and other stakes and pick up any rotting vegetation.

• Harvest squashes and pumpkins and collect seeds from beans. Make sure the seeds are dry before storing.

• Plant garlic and overwintering onions outdoors and sow some sweet peas indoors to produce strong plants for planting out in early March. If Brussel sprout plants are growing in an exposed position stake them well.

• Bring your tender plants indoors if an early frost threatens and keep them on the dry side over winter.

Remove any dead foliage.

• Grass growth will start to slow so lift the height of your mower blades. There is also time to lay new turf.

• Continue planting Spring flowering bulb but leave tulips until next month.

The Bristol and Somerset Group of the Hornby Railway Collectors’ Association presents its 8th Vintage Hornby Train Show on Saturday 29th October 2016 at The King Alfred School (B Block), Burnham Road, Highbridge TA9 3EE, from 10 a.m until 4 p.m. Featuring running layouts in gauges 0 and 00, displays and trade stands, these trains were British made and robust, and still command a large following. Halloween Fun comes to The Walled Gardens of Cannington

Bridgwater and Taunton College’s The Walled Gardens of Cannington will be opening its gates once again for its annual Halloween fun, from Wednesday 26 – Sunday 30 October, 10am – 4pm each day.

Last year’s activities saw hundreds of children and their accompanying adults attend The Walled Gardens, following the pumpkin trail, carving creative pumpkin designs, having their faces painted and enjoying the freedom of the Gardens. This year the event, where fancy dress is optional, is sure to be as popular as ever, so it is worth buying your tickets in advance to ensure you don’t miss out!

Children and adults alike will be in for a treat as they explore the Gardens, surrounded by the suitably spooky medieval priory. Many ghostly stories have been shared throughout the years. It is said that a network of tunnels exist beneath the Gardens, leading to various spots in the village so that the nuns and nearby monks could meet in secret, and sightings of ghostly nuns have been reported!

Tickets to the Halloween activities cost £5 per child in advance (for a specific day), and £6 on the gate, with accompanying adults, free. The ticket provides entry to the Gardens, and participation in the activities. Please note that face painting will have a small additional cost. Autumn Round Up in the Garden

Your garden is one of the first things that a prospective buyer will see, so it is essential to ensure that it appears welcoming, well maintained and cared for throughout the year.

Edward Creswick, of CJ Hole Burnham, offers some tips on how to keep your garden looking good this autumn.

“It’s a well-worn cliché, but first impressions really do count, and presenting your garden at its best in the autumn brings particular challenges.

Perhaps one of the most necessary but time consuming tasks is to clear dead leaves promptly and regularly once they start to fall. If you have a pond, clear it of existing debris and weeds, then protect it from falling leaves.

Keep your borders neat by cutting back perennials and clear away faded bedding plants. Also, remove any finished crops from the vegetable patch and fork over the soil.

Weeds and moss also need to be removed from areas of gravel and chippings and crevices in patios, paths and walls. Remember to check the outer side of your boundaries – it’s all too easy to think only of how the garden looks from the house, but prospective buyers will see it first from the road!

Also, look out for any unsightly windblown debris from refuse collection which can get caught under shrubs and hedges. Prune climbing plants, trim hedges, and cut back plants that are overhanging boundaries or pavements.

Mow your lawn, but less frequently, and raise the height of cut as the growth rate slows down.

Scarify and aerate your lawn by raking if necessary and apply an autumn feed which will harden it up for the winter.

Ensure that the edges of lawns are crisp and neat, and brighten up the garden by placing containers with fresh planting.

It might take some effort, but a neat and colourful autumn garden will pay dividends in terms of the number of prospective purchasers who will be attracted to your property.

Burnham-on-Sea Socialites

The Socialites are a group which is based on Face book. We are local people who belong to the group. In July we presented Mr & Mrs Scott of the Ritz cinema a lovely cake to celibate the cinema's 80th Anniversary. We then stayed to see the new Ghost Buster movie, which was a fun evening of celebration with Mr & Mrs Scott pleased with the cake. A large group of us visited Relish for an enjoyable evening out. We have a few more events planned for the forthcoming months. The socialites recently ran a cake stall at the Burnham summer fete hosted by BEST on Bank Holiday Monday.

All the cakes were donated by the socialites and friends. Monies made were donated to BEST. If any body would like to meet new people and socialize you can find us on facebook. The only criteria to join is you are local!

The BD Jazz Club

The BD Jazz Club is the local Burnham area Traditional/ New Orleans Jazz Club. The Club usually meets on the last Friday of every month for regular club sessions at Laburnum House Lodge Hotel in Sloway Lane West Huntspill, which is situated a short distance down the A38 from Highbridge – Turn right opposite the Crossways inn into Church Road and follow the signs. Burnham Events Social Team (B.E.S.T)

This has certainly been an exciting 6 months for B.E.S.T which began with us welcoming some new committee members. On May 14th we held a Somerset Day at Marine Cove. Local bands such as We Three and Rustique played during the afternoon and there was also a guest appearance by Weston blue grass band Lost in the grass. The sun shone and everyone had a great day.

Tuesday night is acoustic night at the Waterfront and we have held a couple of raffles there. It is a great evening and any musicians can attend. July 22nd saw us hosting a cheese and wine event at St Andrews Hall.

It was a fun filled evening and was well attended.

Music was provided by We Three + 1 and other entertainment included Irish bingo and a camembert challenge! The biggest challenge so far has been organising the Bank Holiday Fete. When it became known that the Friends of Burnham Hospital would no longer be holding the annual fete B.E.S.T were approached and asked to take it on. Given the time scale it was an immense task. B.E.S.T committee members and B.E.S.T Friends certainly stepped up a gear to make the day a huge success. The weather

Any child/young person, who has special needs, and is aged between 0 and 18 years of age can come along with a parent/carer. We meet every other Saturday, at the Balliol Hall, West

There are more events in the B.E.S.T calendar. To coincide with “the Christmas light switch on”, we are having a Blitz Ball at the Ritz Social Club on the 19th November. Music from the era will be provided by Paul Chopper Harding and Em'n'Im will be performing too.

We are hoping that everyone will enter into the spirit of the evening and will dig out the old war time clothes that their grandparents have kept “Just in case”. We will be ending the year with the opening of a Christmas rink on December 17th.

Plans are underway to make it a great event. We are hoping to hold another cheese and wine evening next February and are also looking at events for next spring which we hope will include another Somerset Day. The B.E.S.T remit is to promote social events in Burnham on Sea. The support we have been given has been immense and is very much appreciated.

We have a B.E.S.T Friends fb page and welcome any positive input or ideas, and please contact us if you wish to get involved.

Burnham on Sea 2016 Cider Festival

The Burnham on Sea 2016 Cider Festival will be taking place from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd October. As well as appealing to local Cider fans, the 2016 CiderFest will attract Cider devotees to the town from a wide area and is complimented on the Saturday by the Burnham Food Festival.

The Burnham Cider Festival features a fabulous array of mainly Local Ciders including such gems as Westcrofts Janets Jungle Juice, Mill Whites Rum Cask, Westons Old Rosie and many more. A full list of the Ciders on offer will be published on the Ritz Facebook and Website nearer the event, and a cider menu will be handed out to everyone on arrival at the festival The Ritz Showbar is the hub of the Festival although visitors are welcome to use all of the Ritz Bars and there will be some great live music on stage all though the weekend. The Barry Walsh band headline the Friday night stage and Six Machine headline the Saturday Night. Sunday afternoon features some brilliant local musicians.

Health Walks from Marine Cove

Join us at 10am every Wednesday through August for a social walk along the Esplanade, taking in the River Walk and into Apex Park following Marine Drive and the newly named Old Station Approach – before returning to Marine Cove.

Health Walk Leader Training Course

Walking for Health, Zing Somerset and SASP are working together to offer volunteer Health Walk Leader Training on Friday 21st October at Taunton Road Medical Centre, Bridgwater. The training runs from 10am – 3pm and covers the physical activity needs, demonstration health walk, health and safety, suitability of walks and the benefits/barriers to walking. The walks tend to be short durations under 1.5 hours. This course is available to anyone wishing to become a volunteer walk leader in their community. It is free to attend and upon completion participants will have access to ongoing help and support to assist with existing walks or indeed establish new ones. Please bring your own lunch with you. Burnham and Highbridge Gateway Club

Burnham and Highbridge Gateway Club for vulnerable adults was set up in September 1979 under the Leadership of the late Mary Farthing with a group of volunteer helpers and parents from St. Andrew's Church Mothers' Union.

The club has grown from a membership of 10 to an average of 50 members each week with 12 voluntary helpers as well as professional Carers. The weekly meetings are still held at the Burnham Area Youth Club premises (where they first started on a fortnightly basis) with occasional days out and an annual 5 day holiday. A Sponsored Walk is planned to take place at Apex Park on Saturday 15th October - money from this will be used to pay for transport costs for the holiday next year. A Halloween Disco will be held at the Centre on 27th October when members need no encouragement to dress up for the occasion. Last month a day trip to the West Midlands Safari was enjoyed by members last month.

Hedges and People - working with, living with and enjoying hedges

The Somerset Hedge Group 2016 digital photographic competition closes October 2016, so entries need to be in soon. The competition follows successful competitions held every two years since 2008. Winners will receive cash prizes at a presentation evening in November 2016. With sponsorship from CPRE, the Blackdown Hills and Mendip Hills AONBs and Marshall Agroecology Ltd, this competition will run during the year from now to the beginning of October 2016. Generous prize money of will be available for two classes: Open and Junior (under 15). The competition is for amateur photographers with a maximum of three entries per person. Digital images only. The closing date for entries is 1 October 2016. There is still time to capture some of the fascinating interactions between people and our wonderful hedgerows across Somerset!

The Secret World of Hedgehogs

Secret World Wildlife Rescue helps over 500 injured and orphaned hedgehogs every year, rehabilitates and gets them back to the wild wherever possible. But hedgehogs have become a less common sight in Britain in recent years. Their numbers have declined dramatically, but there are steps we can all take to help Britain's favourite mammal. Get up close to hedgehogs and get involved in hedgehogsaving activities at Secret World from 22nd - 24th October. There will also be the chance to meet bats, foxes and other wildlife. With craft stalls, wildlife talks, children’s games and delicious food on offer, there’s something for everyone at this special weekend.

Entry is free. Donations are very welcome, as Secret World relies on your generosity to continue their work to rescue, rehabilitate and release injured hedgehogs, birds and other wildlife.
