localreach Burnham, Burnham & Berrow Highbridge & Highbridge Editorial jacqui@localreach.co.uk

From the editor Welcome to the October edition of Local Reach, we have some interesting articles from around the local area in this month’s edition. It always fascinates me to read what has been happening locally or what is about to happen, always getting the opportunity to put it in my diary. October is a busy time with some groups reforming after a summer break – looking for new members to join them, so whether you are a singer, actor or gardener there is a group locally that would meet your needs. With the nights drawing in, this maybe a good opportunity to join a new group or society. In this edition Somerset Wildlife have launched their photo competition, be sure to enter. There is advice on hand by the Citizens Advice Bureau and our regular Gardening feature. Do not forget that October is the time we put our clocks back – the date this year is October 28th. I hope you enjoy reading this months publication as much as I did collating the information. LocalReach Community Editor for Burnham & Highbridge - jacqui@localreach.co.uk

The deadline for the November issue is 12th October!

Banwell Caves Last weekend I took my family to Banwell to visit “The Caves” as part of Heritage Open Days. Upon entering the village of Banwell we were greeted with handmade pointer signs directing us up the hill. We were not disappointed, upon being greeted by John in the car-park we headed up the drive to “The Caves”. Volunteers provided us with a quiz for the children and an information sheet about the property and the grounds. Our first visit was the Bone Cave, lit by candles in the main, down the stone lined pathway and entered the cave by the stone steps. The temperature dropped considerably and before us we saw bones stacked within the cave. Some more than 70,000 years old. The caves and bone deposits are recognised by English Nature as being of international importance and have been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. In the grounds a wood was planted during the 19th century with paths leading through

the grounds, to the various summerhouses and Gazebo’s. A short woodland walk leads you to Banwell Tower which was known as the Pepper-Pot because of its design. Once

at the top you are greeted with a view of Weston and the surrounding countryside with views of the Mendips also.

Many of the features have and are still, undergoing extensive restoration which is overseen by the Banwell Caves Heritage Group. In order to fund these restoration costs open days and tours are arranged. More information can be found at www.banwellcaves.org . The Caves are only open to the public on selective days throughout the year. During 2013 the Caves will be open on: Sunday 26th May 1030 – 430pm with tea and cakes available Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th September 1030 – 430pm as part of Heritage Open Days. Cavemans Lunches and cream teas and cake will be on sale. The visit to the cafe for light refreshment was enjoyable and very homely – made all the more enjoyable by the enthusiasm of the volunteers involved in this project. For somewhere so close, I for one had no idea of its existence so be sure to make a note for the future and visit this interesting place.

North Sedgemoor Local History Group Programme of illustrated talks for 2012/13 Meetings are held at King Alfred School Lecture Theatre from 7pm to 9pm. Visitors are welcome.

Somerset wildlife photo competition launched Somerset Wildlife Trust is launching its 2012 photo competition with an internationally acclaimed landscape photographer as a special guest judge. This year the Trust has welcomed Guy Edwardes to the judging panel; a professional landscape, travel and wildlife photographer based in the South West. Along with 19 other top UK nature and landscape photographers Guy is part of the 2020vision; a national multi-media project to highlight awareness of Britain's threatened ecosystems. Somerset Wildlife Trust is a project partner and Guy was amongst the 2020vision team that visited the Somerset Levels, last summer, to photograph the wildlife, people

and conservation work taking place there. Guy said: “Somerset offers a wonderful diversity of landscapes and wildlife and I have enjoyed working on Exmoor, the Quantocks and the Levels. Photography is such a powerful way to communicate about nature so I’m delighted to be supporting the Wildlife Trust.” Somerset Wildlife Trust is inviting photographers across the county to enter up to three digital images of wildlife and landscapes in Somerset. The winning competition entries will be published in the Trust’s membership magazine, with other entries shown on the website. In addition to the judges award, the top ten entries will be open to the

‘People’s Choice’ award with voting taking place online. Somerset Wildlife Trust’s PR and Communications Manager Beth Jerrett said: “Last year we received 200 entries and more than 900 people took part in our online vote to choose their favourite photo. We’re delighted to welcome Guy as a judge and look forward to showcasing Somerset’s wildlife and landscapes.” Always remember when taking photographs of wildlife that the welfare of the subject is more important than the image. Enter online and for full terms of entry visit www.somersetwildlife. org/photocomp Deadline for entries is December 1, 2012.

CJ Hole gets a whole lot bigger The South West’s best estate agency has just opened seven new offices throughout Somerset following a merger with established local agent Annagram. The merger puts CJ Hole back on the map in areas such as Cheddar and Congresbury, Weston, Winscombe and Burnham and means that movers in these areas can once again benefit from CJ Hole’s award-winning property services. Edward Creswick, a Director of Annagram said: “CJ Hole is a trusted brand which I first worked for over 20 years ago. Much has changed since then and CJ Hole is now helping us to modernise our offering to sell and let property more effectively for our customers.” Sue Iles, Neil Jenkin & Edward Creswick, Directors of Annagram were impressed with the array of innovations that CJ Hole have made available to them. It is these innovations combined with great customer service that have seen CJ Hole voted Best Medium Estate Agency for both Sales and Lettings at the highly coveted Estate Agency of the Year Awards for the past two years. CJ Hole also remains one of the highest ranked estate agencies in the country on independent review site Allagents.co.uk – the Tripadvisor of the property world. Annagram’s merger with CJ Hole will mean that properties enjoy even greater exposure and will also ensure that CJ Hole can help buyers and sellers relocate throughout the region and beyond. CJ Hole’s sister brands have close to 100 offices nationally, including

over 20 in Central London. Properties for sale and to let through Annagram will also now be included in the CJ Hole magazine produced in conjunction with Rightmove – the UK’s biggest property website. Their properties will be searchable across CJ Hole’s full suite of apps to cater for the growing number of people who use their mobile to look for property. CJ Hole is one of the very few agents in the whole country to have a full set of apps for iPhone, Android and mobile web integrated with their main website. Mark Harrison, Director of CJ Hole, who has been overseeing Annagram’s integration with CJ Hole comments: “Annagram have a great, customer-focused team with local experts who know the property market inside and out. We’re thrilled that they are joining CJ Hole and know it will be great for everyone who moves with us.” The rebranding of Annagram’s offices will be complete in the coming weeks and their team are already out meeting people who looking to move and showing off the best of what CJ Hole has to offer whilst their existing property portfolio is upgraded with lots of marketing enhancements that CJ Hole provide. Local Writer wins with her Burnham Poem Local resident Helen Somers entered a tongue in cheek poem about Burnham on Sea into the Somerset Skills & Learning poetry competition and was both surprised and delighted when she found out her poem had come third. Helen, who lives on Oxford St, and works as an Activities Coordinator for the Elderly said “I was delighted when I heard I had won my poem being turned into a postcard, and seeing the poem illustrated as a postcard is great.” The poem takes a light hearted look at live in Burnham on Sea and lampoons many of the local peculiarities like the constant seagull poo associated with living on a coast and ‘sea that is

never quite blue’. Helen told us “I have lived in Burnham all my live, as did my parents and my grandparents are buried here, so I feel experienced to see the funny side of my home town, but I do get very defensive when I hear others putting it down. Its like you have to live here to be qualified to know how bad it is.” she joked. Helen belongs to the Writers in Somerset group who meet fortnightly to help each other develop their work and style. She is busy editing a novel which he has just sent off to several publishers in the hope that one will be interested. “Stories become very much like children – you get very defensive and protective towards

them. Even though I am very proud of my story, it is still scary when you introduce it to a publisher as you never know if they will like it or not.” But even if her story doesn’t get published, her postcard poem is now available from the Somerset Skills & Learning display stands in the Somerset Skills & Learning centre on Princess St, Burnham; the Princess Theatre and Arts Centre; and Hurleys bookshop on Burnham High Street, along with the new adult education brochure, full of fun leisure learning opportunities starting in September. Grab one now to find out how you could stretch your creative side when you pick up Helen’s postcard

NEW CLASSES AT DANCEFIT!! DanceFit, in Love Lane, Burnham-on-Sea, is very pleased to announce that we are expanding our timetable. Alongside our existing classes, we are now running RAD ballet for children aged 2 ½ right up to adult ballet. Ballet is the foundation for all dance, and is a lovely way to get youngsters dancing, it also is a fantastic form of fitness for adults, combining graceful moves with exercises that will really tone your whole body, you do not need any prior dance experience. We are also adding the popular Musical Theatre to our timetable, a chance for all budding performers to gain knowledge in all three disciplines of dancing, singing and acting. We will run a junior class for children aged 6-10 years and a senior class for children aged 11 years upwards. This class has proven to be very popular at our annual summer school “Build a Show in a week” with over 20 children aged 5-10 years working together to create a production of “The Pirates of The Currybean,” which was the performed on the final day at The Princess Theatre. We are very excited to now be able to offer children that attend a DanceFit class the opportunity to take part in The Arts

Award, alongside taking their dance exams. This enables children to gain nationally recognised qualifications at different levels from bronze through to gold that can help them throughout life. In addition to our existing Zumba and Adult Tap classes we are now offering more throughout the week, with new evening Zumba classes and also brand new beginner adult tap classes. We are hoping to help break the world record for the most tap dancers dancing the same routine in multiple venues across the country and raise money for Children In Need, so if you have always fancied trying tap dance now is a great time to get involved, we run classes for children aged 3yrs up to adults with no upper age limit!! Launch Party for Burnham on Sea Food and Drink Festival With under 3 weeks until the first Burnham on Sea Food & Drink Festival, the organisers, Bev and Sarah Milner Simonds, welcomed exhibitors and sponsors at a Launch Party last night. Sarah said “Even in one evening bringing people together, new contacts were made and deals were done – Rich’s Cider Farm restaurant will be trying a new supplier and Alison at Let’s Celebrate won new fans.Everyone fell a bit in love with the Café Paramo young entrepreneurs from Heathfield School. I can see from twitter traffic this morning that last night’s bright ideas are coming to fruition already” As a result of the evening’s success, the organisers have pledged to start a Burnham Food Network, with B2B events and gastronomic adventures to come. At least one Somerset Food Safari was mapped and planned during the evening. The party was held in the heart of the town centre at Mr Beans Café.A fantastic feast was provided by exhibitors; Let’s Celebrate Cakes, Mike’s Pork, Oatley Vineyard, Mr Pickles, Rich’s Cider, Starlight House and The Treasure Chest – a pre-festival amuse-bouche. The Food and Drink Festival is on 29th September and runs from 10am – 5pm.Two venues are now fully booked by local food and drink producers.Local restaurants, shops and community groups are still joining up with great

fringe events to run as Side Orders. It looks like a cracking free day out for families. The Baptist Hall and The Princess Theatre are both brimming with over 40 exhibitors showcasing the best Somerset foods and drinks. Recent confirmations include Bloom Berry Juices, The Shotgun & Chelsea Bun Club, The Cottage Baker and Coco Bella The full listing is online and organisers can also answer any questions through the website. (http://www. burnhamonseafoodfestival.org) The day also includes The Great Burnham Bake Off, sponsored by Positive Wealth Creation. Beverley said, “the prospect of winning a great baking trophy has really got Burnham talking and it turns out we’re a competitive bunch – I have even had a report back that someone tried to find out from judge Emma Britton what her favorite cake was so they could bake one especially for her!” The competition has two categories – one for families and one for adults. You can enter as many cakes as you want and entry is free. Entry to the contest is simple: Bake a cake, fill in an entry form [you can download one from the website or fill one in on the day] and bring them both to The Baptist Hall by 2pm on the day of the festival to be in with a chance of winning the trophy.

Desktop, Notebook or Tablet? Are you having a dilemma over what type of computer to buy? In this issue I hope to explain the pros and cons of different types of computing device. One of the first things is to decide is where you would like to use the computer. For example, the traditional desktop computer is usually based in a spare room, so the obvious choice if you don’t have this kind of space is to buy a notebook (laptop) or tablet (iPad) which can be used in any room in the house, or even away from home. The unfortunate thing about notebook computers is that they are not as robust as the desktop and can often develop problems, a common one being damage caused by heat. Laptops are more likely to sustain damage due to spillages, or even being dropped, so their portable nature can be detrimental. On the other hand, their portability has to be considered a major benefit. For those of you who do a lot of typing (i.e. creating documents or long e-mails), comfort should also be considered. Tablets can be very tiring when used for long periods, and the notebook computer can also cause posture problems. For those of you who spend hours on a computer, I would normally advise buying a desktop computer,

as the seating position allows the best comfort long term. Desktop computers are generally very reliable, can be expected to last for years and have the best performance versus money spent. However, many people just want a device for viewing information and sending the occasional email - for this a tablet is highly recommended. The “touch” screen can be easier to use than a keyboard or mouse and their lightweight nature allows easy access in all situations, from being at home to travelling in an aircraft. My father was one has found the iPad to be brilliant, having suffered a stroke he was unable to use a traditional keyboard, but found the touch screen invaluable. Games, books and films can be downloaded to the device whilst at home, and then transferred to the tablet for use anywhere. A tablet, such as the iPad, is not strictly a computer, so there are downsides. It will not run some traditional computer software, and it does not allow devices such as digital cameras to be directly connected, so most people are advised to own both a computer and a tablet, so that all functions can be performed on one or other of the machines. Local Brass Band pleasing the crowds again After a much acclaimed successful performance at the end of August in their Burnham on Sea Princess Hall season of summer concerts, the Burnham and Highbridge Band is busy in preparation for the next in the series which takes place on Sunday 28th October at 7.45pm. Guest performance this month comes from the ‘Scrumpy Saxophone Quartet’. The Quartet comprises 4 members of the Yeovil Concert Band. They perform a couple of short pieces during the band's concerts and have recently played at several charity and fundraising events in the Taunton & Yeovil area. One audience member remarked that this is now a

much more exciting band whose selection of music and quality of performance gets better with each outing. Band secretary Ken Henton said, “This is due to a growing commitment from members not only to rehearse well but also to apply an analytical approach to their playing which identifies where musicality can be improved. We are grateful for the efforts of David Fisher our Musical Director who demands hard work from the band and who is now obtaining results, which, a couple of years ago, we could only dream of. His rapport with the audience, along with his excellent selection of music in a more modern and popular style, leads to a relaxed and enjoyable concert, ideal for a Sunday evening’s listening. At the price of £6 (£5 for concessions), it has to be excellent value for an evening out.” Tickets may be bought from Princess Box-office or purchased at the door.

Home & Emergency Animal Rescue Team H.E.A.R.T. - the Homing & Emergency Animal Rescue Team, was formed in April 1996 by three animal lovers, Gill, Glenys and Ange each of whom had many years experience in the various aspects of animal welfare and rescue work. A couple of years ago one of our supporters contacted us offering a substantial amount of money the only proviso was that it had to be spent on something tangible. As a result we now have a people carrier set up with a cage and space for all our equipment so the animals can now be transported safely and comfortably. It has also been signwritten so the HEART name can be spread far and wide. HEART is run informally from our homes near Bristol but cover a wide area and we are supported by the invaluable assistance of a stalwart band of fosterers. We like to keep animals in a home environment partly because we feel this is more beneficial for them but mainly

so that we can get to know their personalities and temperaments and thereby better assess the type of home and family to which they would be best suited. All animals are health-checked, wormed and flea treated on arrival and seen by our Vet if necessary. Where practical all are neutered prior to rehoming, kittens and puppies are vaccinated and cats are tested for the fiv and felv viruses. We will always make every effort to help any animal in any situation. In each of the last 5 years we have helped over 250 animals which for a small group of volunteers working from our own homes in our spare time we think is quite impressive. As well as the usual run of cats, dogs and rabbits we have dealt with degues, chinchillas, most other small pets, chickens, various other birds, horses, goats, an abandoned tarantula and a tank of tropical fish. Most of our rescues are rehomed but there are some, mainly

TAI CHI and QIGONG We still have a few spaces on our Wednesday morning classes. 10-11am Qigong Qigong is reckoned to have been practised for over 2,000 years. It is based on the Traditional Chinese approach to health, aiming to keep the body's 'Qi' energy in balance and flowing well through the Meridian channels of the body. The movements are gentle yet good for muscle tone and flexibility. In many Eastern philosophies, the breath is said to 'connect the mind with the body' and this aspect also makes qigong ideal for those looking to manage pain or to deal with long-term health problems. Qigong can be practised seated if required. 11.15am - 12.15pm Tai Chi Beginners Initially we will be practising the Sun Style 13 Form then progressing to Yang Style (The style relates to the family that developed the particular movements) Great for all of the above but also balance and co-ordination. Both forms of exercise have been researched and show improvements in many health conditions. Classes are held in Burnham Community Centre, Berrow Road. Cheryl has been teaching since 1999 and continues to train with Professor Li Deyin and his family who have been at the centre of Tai Chi development in China for over 100 years. You can be sure that what you learn at Bubbling Springs is truly authentic and close to the source. For details contact Cheryl Mountford. the 'elderly and infirm' as we call them that stay on a permanent basis to live out the rest of their life in comfort and safety; no animal is ever put to sleep unless we and our Vet feel that is the kindest thing to do. Nothing is ever turned away and if we cannot help ourselves we do our best to find someone who can. Generally funds are raised by donations from the public, either on a general basis or on adoption of a rescued animal or in the form of sponsorship of animals whilst they are in foster care or undergoing veterinary treatment. Occasionally we receive grants from animal welfare trusts and donations from sponsored events. We hold dog shows, car boot and tabletop sales, raffles, collect aluminium cans to sell for re-cycling and used postage stamps for re-sale. ADVICE FROM SEDGEMOOR CITIZENS’ ADVICE BUREAU This is the second of a series of articles in which an experienced adviser from Sedgemoor Citizens’ Advice Bureau

DEBT

Across the country, debt is one of the most common problems brought to the CAB by clients. Sometimes, debts are the clients’ only problem, but often debts are linked to other issues, such as redundancy, sickness or relationship breakdown. In a short article, it is impossible to give a comprehensive overview of all the issues surrounding debt, but here are some key points: • In the first place, don’t panic, but don’t ignore the issue either. The problem won’t go away. Indeed, it will become worse if you bury your head in the sand. • Work out how much money you owe and to whom. Make a list of all your creditors (people or companies to whom you owe money), noting their names, addresses, the account number and the amount owed. • Decide which are the most urgent debts to repay. While no debts should be ignored, priority should be given to those that could have serious consequences for you and your family. Among these are: • Rent or mortgage arrears (you could lose your home). • Gas and electricity bills (you could be cut off). • Council tax arrears (these could be referred to a bailiff). • Court fines (these, too, could be referred to a bailiff). • Maintenance arrears, including money owed to the Child Support Agency (again, bailiffs could become involved). • Tax arrears (court action could result). • Remember that it’s a criminal offence to receive a television signal without a licence. • You may be able to handle matters yourself. Work out carefully how much money you have coming in each week and how much you need for reasonable living expenses. This calculation will tell you how much is available to pay off your debts. This is called budgeting. To help you, there is a budgeting tool on the CAB website (http://www.adviceguide.org.uk). • There are also a number of companies that advertise assistance with debt management. Do bear in mind that most of these charge for their services and that by using one of them you are increasing your debt. In addition, there are usually penalty clauses for early termination of the contract. Read the small print carefully. • Some companies offer short term loans that seem tempting. However, these usually carry very high interest rates. • Advice that is free, independent, confidential and impartial can be obtained from Sedgemoor Citizens’ Advice Bureau. We do not judge people; we assist them, whatever their situation. In the case of debt, we can help clients to analyse their financial position and clarify the options open to them. In many instances, we are able to negotiate directly with creditors on behalf of clients. Other possibilities that we may be able to assist with include: debt relief orders, individual voluntary arrangements and bankruptcy. We also ensure that clients maximise their income by checking benefit entitlement. If you have any anxieties about debt, do visit one of Sedgemoor CAB’s drop-in sessions at: • Burnham-on-Sea Methodist Church, College St. Burnham-on-Sea. (Tuesdays, 9.30-12.30). • Hope Baptist Church, Church St., Highbridge. (Thursdays, 9.30-12.30). • The Lions, West Quay, Bridgwater. (Monday-Friday 10-1; Saturday 10-12).
