Coffee Morning raises £590 A coffee morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support successfully raised £590 held
on Saturday 29th October. Thanks to all for your support, well done Berrow Village –
looking forward to doing it all again next year!
Seasons change…. As we slip from what was euphemistically called summer, the roads in the county start to present a different range of challenges for the motorcyclist. We start to get the early morning sun that sits lower in the sky and is in your eye-line as you ride up hills. Conversely, we also get misty and foggy mornings preceding the bright sun. Both of these situations mean the biker will need to exercise caution – not only because of reduced visibility, but because other roads users tend not to use headlights until it is dark, and therefore often remain hidden in the shadows caused by the harsh light of the low sun. This is a chance for bikers to truly shine by keeping their headlights on dipped, and wearing reflective clothing – it’s really important to give yourself that little bit extra in terms of visibility.

Back to the roads –as we move into autumn and winter, along with the mist there will be wet and damp roads. Add some fallen leaves, clods of mud from tractors and patches of diesel that you would normally see if it was lighter and you have that potentially disastrous mix of hazards that will combine to put you and your bike in a ditch or involve you in an accident. So consider other roads users whilst you’re riding – not just by your actions as a biker, but as mentioned before, drivers will not have that heightened sense of seasonal change that bikers need to develop. Drivers tend to get into their car and within minutes are as warm as toast regardless of conditions outside. So there we have it, the seasons will change and bikers will need as always to ‘up their game’. For further driving hints and tips for both riders and drivers visit www. somersetroadsafety.org

Business clubs together to raise funds for Somerset youth charity Clubbing together has benefitted a Somerset youth charity by more than £700. Bridgwater-based Chartered Financial Management held their inaugral golf day at Enmore Park Golf Club on Thursday, September 20, to raise funds for their chosen charity of 2012, Somerset Rural Youth Project. The event attracted 36 players and as well as a team competition there was also an individual competition to win the charity cup. The winner of this, Geoff Baker, also wins corporate hospitality to Bath Rugby on March 4 for four people and he gets to nominate a local charity for next year’s event as
part of his prize. Each player donated £10 to the charity and Chartered Financial Management agreed to match whatever was raised on the day. Somerset Rural Youth Project is a county wide youth work charity, based in Edington near Bridgwater, that delivers a number of projects to young people living in rural areas. The key objectives of SRYP are to increase the take up of training and employment by young people in rural Somerset; to address issues of rural exclusion, isolation, and disadvantage; to provide access to information and advice on issues relevant to their lives and aspirations; and to participate in local
partnerships to create sustainable working practices. The golf event was a huge success and a speech of thanks was given by the chairman of the board for Somerset Rural Youth Project David Clitheroe. Organiser and director of Chartered Financial Management Jon Marshfield said: “We had a very successful day with guests enjoying a great day’s golf in splendid sunshine. They also took the opportunity to embrace fundraising for SRYP. We are delighted to match the £370 raised on the day to give a total of £740 for the charity.” For more information on SRYP contact 01278 722100.

Ready for Windows 8?
By the time you read this, Windows 8 should be available to buy. Some say that this is ‘make or break’ for Microsoft, as the competition from the likes of Apple is cutting heavily into Microsoft’s profits. As a long standing user of Microsoft, I was very excited to be able to obtain a prerelease copy of Windows 8 which I readily installed onto my work laptop. Fortunately, the installation was very straight forward and converted all my existing programs and settings into the Windows 8 format. One thing that was immediately noticeable was the speed in which the computer started, plus the major change in appearance from the standard Microsoft desktop. A new tiled interface was available which as well as showing my favourite programs, also had new articles and other media type content. I was quite shocked to see that the traditional “Start” button was gone. This was quite a surprise but fortunately, I was able to reinstate the start menu using some third party software. It struck me that many of my customers
who were used to the standard look and feel of Microsoft Windows would need some guidance on this new system, but felt that for many, the benefits would soon be realised. One of the most interesting features is that different types of Windows devices will now be able share settings, so for example if you have a Windows 8 computer and then buy a Windows 8 phone or tablet, settings will seamlessly transfer between devices. Another interesting feature is that the password to access your device can be reset from another internet connected computer, should a password be forgotten. Internet Explorer 10 is also a new facility, promising a faster and more secure internet experience, although this will soon be available to download free for Windows 7 and Windows Vista customers. If you are interested in a new computer running Windows 8, or maybe would like help upgrading your existing computer to Windows 8, please e-mail sales@e-cps.co.uk or call Computer Problem Solutions Ltd on 07973 536299

Burnham Farmers’ Market The Farmers’ Market is the last Friday of every month Burnham High Street from 9am to 1pm. The market came under threat of closure earlier in the year with the withdrawal of the grant from Burnham on Sea and Highbridge Town Council. However, Somerset Farmers’ Markets was greatly encouraged by the support expressed by our many local customers, determined to keep the market running. More traders have been recruited to increase viability
and attractiveness to customers, and we have found ways of reducing overheads. We’ve built up a wide selection of produce to cater for regular customers who can stock up on a range of meat, vegetables, bread, cheese, pies, cakes and preserves. All of our produce is locally produced. Over the summer the market has thrived and been very popular with both locals and visitors to the town. We are now confident that the future of the market is secure. Come and see us over the next few months and order your Christmas food.

REDUNDANCY
One of the sad aspects of the current recession is the number of clients approaching Citizens’ Advice Bureaux across the country as a result of redundancy. The most frequent questions asked are: • In terms of employment law, what does the word ‘redundancy’ mean? • What does my employer have to do to make me redundant? • If I am made redundant, what are my rights? What is redundancy? Redundancy is a form of dismissal. It occurs when you are dismissed because the work you do is no longer necessary. Reasons for this might include: • The business is failing, or has gone bust. • The business no longer needs your particular skills, perhaps because of the introduction of a new system or new technology. • A re-organisation has led to your work being done by other people. • The business has moved to another area. • The sole owner of the business has died. told that they are redundant when, in fact, they are not. If one of the following applies, you should seek advice as to whether or not you are actually redundant: • Y our employer is taking on other people. • Y ou are the only person being made redundant, especially in a large organisation. • Y ou suspect that discrimination, or a poor relationship with your employer has been a factor in the decision. After redundancy •D o remember that there is a range of benefits to which you might be entitled. •D o take care to address any debt issues. If you have any anxieties about potential or actual redundancy, benefits or debt, do visit one of Sedgemoor CAB’s drop-in sessions at: •B urnham-on-Sea Methodist Church, College St. Burnham-on-Sea. BiARS BiARS has enjoyed a successful summer. Local people are now more aware of our existence and we welcome the fact that they are coming in to see what’s on in the town and surrounding areas. This is what we wanted to achieve. Not just a tourist information centre but an information centre for all. September saw appointment of a BiARS Tourism Manager. Ian Jefferies has been connected with BiARS since its instigation and all the volunteers were delighted that his application was successful. Ian has plenty of ideas to generate interest in tourism for Burnham on Sea. The opening hours until after the carnival season are 10 am to 4 pm seven days a week, with a late night opening for the fireworks on 11th November. The rest of the winter opening hours are currently under review. Volunteers play a major part in the success of BiARS and we have recently signed up some new faces. If you would like to be part of this success, come in and talk to us or telephone 01278 787852 when someone will be pleased to tell you what volunteering entails. With Christmas just round the corner and local shops beginning to ply their Christmas wares BiARS are jumping on the bandwagon and asking you for donations for the Christmas raffle. The pièce de résistance will be a hamper and items will be gratefully accepted for this too. Please bring them along to the Information Centre on South Esplanade. Thank you for your continued support. 24

Once Upon A Time in Burnham ...... in the beginning Once upon a time, not so very long ago, most towns and villages, especially in rural areas like Somerset, were self-sufficient, when it came to everyday needs. Most people owned, rented or worked on the land. The majority of farm labourers lived in tied cottages which belonged to the farmer, for whom they worked, meaning that when they left his employ they lost their homes. The lucky ones lived in cottages that had fairly large gardens that provided enough space to grow sufficient vegetables for their needs and run a few chickens to provide eggs and occasional meat for their table. Additional meat could be obtained by keeping rabbits. This was necessary because the Game Laws of 1860 made it illegal for anyone to take game of any sort without a permit from the landowner – this even applied to tenant farmers. If convicted, the “criminal” faced possible deportation or hanging (John Cobbett quotes a conversation with a self-confessed poacher who claimed that he would rather hang for a rabbit than starve for the lack of one). The more fortunate families may have been able to keep a pig which they fed on scraps and left-overs. This provided a further source of meat which could be smoked or salted to prolong its storage life before it had to be eaten. Because of its position on the Bristol Channel coast, a good living could also be
made from the sea, John Lott who built ‘Lott’s Commercial Inn’ on the corner of Cross Street, started life as a fisherman. The town developed slowly from being a cluster of dwellings in the vicinity of the church and a couple of manors with their manorial rights over tat land and the people who lived and worked on it. Most ordinary folk had to be able to turn their hands to any job about the home or at work. Gradually those who possessed particular skills began to specialise and sell them, either for money or in exchange for services. The pace of life was much slower and people were, by and large, more content with their lot. As recently as the beginning of the 20th Century, there was no radio or television and the cinema was in its infancy – the first proper cinemas in Burnham and Highbridge did not appear until after the First World War. Like Many Communities we had our butchers and bakers although no candlestick makers ..... but more of them another time. Thanks to Bob Thomas for this piece – for more information on Burnham’s History take a look at Winston and Bob Thomas book - The Book of Burnham on Sea – A Record of the Ebb and Flow of a Somerset Seaside Town available locally through Hurleys. Sedgemoor gives go ahead to conversion of Cannington Court Sedgemoor District Council has given the green light to EDF Energy for its innovative plans to convert a former Priory, known as Cannington Court, into a national training centre for its employees from across the UK. Planning consent for the £15m project was delegated to officers as it had the support of Cannington Parish Council and the Council’s planners. Not only will it secure the future of
one of the district’s most important historic buildings but it will also contribute to its economic growth and its aim to be a focus for low carbon businesses. Permission had already been granted for vital repair and maintenance to the listed buildings that make up Cannington Court, which is owned by Bridgwater College. This work is being carried out by Somerset firm C S Williams using skilled
craftsmen from the area, with 19 of their 20 suppliers being from the South West, and of those 17 are from Somerset. The latest permission granted by Sedgemoor District Council was the subject of several exhibitions back in May so local people could see what would be involved and their feedback was used to help shape the final proposals
