The family business you’ll be at home with When you buy windows, doors and conservatories there are three things you do need to be sure about - value-formoney, quality and the workmanship of the installers. And the one thing you most certainly don’t need is being pressured into making decisions. Kingfisher can set your mind at rest on all counts. We are a long established family firm and family values dictate the way we do business. So much so that many of our customers become friends and, in turn, recommend us to their friends. Our product range is comprehensive and consistently keenly priced. It includes PVCu, timber and aluminium and can be viewed, at your leisure, at our East Brent showroom. If you invite us to give you a quotation, we will take the time to establish your requirements exactly, explain the options and choices to you, give advice where required, take careful measurements and give you a clear, detailed breakdown of costs. We will then leave you to make a decision in your own time. You will not be harassed or badgered.

Walking for Frankie Raising awareness and fundraising for the Lily Foundation Charity Mark Penfold is going to embark on a 400 mile charity walk from Edinburgh to London in June, with the support of the Royal Mail he is going to walk the historical route to mark their 500th Anniversary. Royal Mail are fully supporting Mark and are generously going to match donate up to £20,000 – but needs our support too. The reason Mark is doing this walk is because his grandson Frankie has a rare genetic life limiting illness called Leigh’s disease. There currently is no cure and Mark is looking to raise money for the Lily Foundation which works hard to raise awareness of mitochondrial diseases, supports families affected by it, funds genetic testing and research with the aim of finding a cure. With your help Mark is aiming to raise £20,000 which means Royal Mails matching he has the potential to raise £40,000 which would help the charity immensely. Every £1.00 would be doubled so every donation really does count. Mark can be sponsored using the sponsor form at Café Aroma or The Royal Mail sorting office or online at www. sponsorme.co.uk/markpenfold or follow on twitter or facebook Mark Penfold – walking for Frankie.

Important announcement – Microsoft’s Windows 10 free upgrade soon to be made chargeable. Please read on for more. As you may know, Windows 10 – Microsoft’s latest version of Windows – has been a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users since its release on July 29th 2015. Some are put off by the occasional ‘nagging’ they receive to upgrade to Windows 10, but very few have anything bad to say about it once they’ve got used to it – recently, Microsoft announced over 300 million devices now use Windows 10, and all reports have shown that the vast majority of owners are very pleased with their decision - I have found that almost every customer I have upgraded to Windows 10 is very pleased with Microsoft’s latest system once they get to know it, including those who were initially hesitant to upgrade as they were “comfortable” with what an older version of Windows was offering them. Often a little bit of tuition/help goes a long way with the installation of a new Windows system. Now that the one-year anniversary of Windows 10 is approaching, the upgrade will no longer be free after July 29th and will subsequently cost $119 (approx. £82), according to Microsoft. Therefore, now more than ever is the time for those running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 who have not upgraded, to recognize that Windows 10 is a worthwhile upgrade for any home user, and is not all different from Windows 7 or 8.1 in actual usage, but simply offers the latest performance, features and security. To learn how to perform your free upgrade now, open your internet browser and navigate to: www.tinyurl.com/upgradeto10 Our advice for those who are still running Windows XP or Windows Vista machines, who cannot perform the free upgrade, is to upgrade entirely to a new Windows 10 machine if you are experiencing sluggishness or unresponsiveness. If you wish to do this safely, please call us on 07973 536299 to be quoted for a full upgrade service – a new computer/laptop, and the migration of your personal files onto the new machine. Neighbourhood Plan – two years on It’s now two years since the Burnham and Highbridge area Neighbourhood Planning Group began work and we’re now approaching the end – though it will still be some months in coming. Why has it taken so long? First of all, we needed time to get systems and procedures in place and had to draw up an initial consultation to establish what people thought were the main issues. We did this by attending events and by sending out our first questionnaire. It quickly transpired that people were most concerned about Burnham Town Centre; the general state of Highbridge; and issues around any new housing – especially in light of what many perceived as the shortfalls in recent developments. Secondly, the Neighbourhood Plan process has overlapped with Sedgemoor’s 5 year review of its own local plan or “Core Strategy”. Our Neighbourhood Plan has to conform to Sedgemoor’s local plan so, as their review is still ongoing, we have to wait a while before finalising our work. We are beginning the process of looking at what exactly we have to submit so that, when we have the details from Sedgemoor, we can move quickly to a conclusion. So far we have dealt with Burnham Town Centre, Highbridge, and the principles behind any new housing development. All have been consulted on via household leaflets, e-mail, Facebook and our web site www.burnhamandhighbridgeneighbourhoodplan.org . We expect Sedgemoor to publish its second stage of consultation on its 5 year review around the time you receive this edition of Local Reach – look out for the press releases! This will tell us what to expect as regards the numbers and locations of housing in our area. It is important that people realise that a Neighbourhood Plan cannot reduce that number although it could increase it! We can make alternative proposals as to sites which, if approved at referendum, would become the allocated sites, rather than those suggested by Sedgemoor. If we choose not to put forward alternatives, then the site(s) put forward by Sedgemoor would become those in the local plan which goes forward to an Inspector for examination and alteration or approval. The next meeting of the Steering Group is on June 28th at 7 pm in Burnham Community Centre, Berrow Road. Anyone who wishes is entitled, and welcome, to attend. We may have some important decisions to make!

The Friends of Burnham on Sea War Memorial Hospital The League of Friends was set up 50 years ago, after an initiative by the hospital’s nurses who held a summer fete in 1965. This was in the garden of their nurses’ home, Whitewalls, which was situated adjacent to the hospital. The fete was so successful that the matron, Miss Barnes, felt that a group of people from the town could help organise events to raise money for patients to augment NHS funds. So the Friends of Burnham Hospital, as we are now called, was born in 1966. Well over £2 million has been raised with the hospital and its patients benefitting greatly through the generous donations of local people. This money has come from legacies, gifts in memoriam, donations, membership subscription, our annual fete and numerous other events. To mark our 50 years we decided to upgrade our rather tired garden enclosed by the hospital and the conservatory. Uneven paving stones have been removed and the whole area has been resurfaced with a resin material. It is a warm, calming, mustard yellow colour. As there are no trip hazards it is ideal for patients with walking frames and wheelchairs. The furniture, parasols and window blinds, which we have also bought, make the area one where patients can sit in sun or shade with their visitors and even enjoy lunch al fresco. This garden was formally opened on 12 May and hopefully will be used regularly by patients during the summer. Should you wish to see it, it will be open to the public on Saturday afternoon, 11th June. The Annual General meeting of the Friends will be held on Monday 6th June 2016 at 7pm in the Outpatients’ department at the hospital – all welcome to attend, not just members but also anyone who is thinking about becoming a member. Committee members will be on hand to assist you with new membership forms. We look forward to meeting as many of you as possible either at the AGM on 6th June, or the open garden afternoon on 11th June. Eileen Shaw - Secretary to the Friends

Learn Something New with Bridgwater College Are you looking to undertake a new qualification? Bridgwater College has many courses starting in September 2016 as part of its adult training and skills provision. Bridgwater College will be holding an Open Evening on Wednesday 8 June, 6pm – 8pm and encourages those who are looking to learn something new to find out more and to enrol. Members of staff will be at the event to talk through the courses, fees, loans, and the enrolment process. Those wishing to enrol on a course, will be able to do so on the night either online, at one of the dedicated computer stations, or with the College’s Information and Guidance team. There will also be talks tailored to adult learners throughout the evening. There are over 700 courses to choose from, in subjects ranging from Horticulture, Hair and Beauty, Textiles and Electrical, with durations from one day to a number of weeks. These courses for adults are ideal to help people train for work, progress their career, gain a new qualification, or to learn new skills and hobbies. A Government loan is available for learners who are aged 19+ and starting an eligible course at Levels 3, 4, 5 or 6 from 1 August 2016. The Advanced Learner Loan is designed to support learners with their course fees in a similar way to how students studying university level courses receive a higher education loan. Any qualification previously achieved will not prevent the learner from accessing a loan and being eligible for the loan is not assessed on income; credit checks will not be carried out. The loan does not have to be paid back until the learner earns over £21,000 per annum. Access to Higher Education Advanced Learner Loans are written off if the learner continues their studies at university. Student Angelina Clerkin who studied Access to Higher Education – Health and Social Care said, “Before I had heard of the Advanced Learner Loan I had given up on going to college and being able to get into university. I did not have the money to pay for the Access course myself this year, and the Loan has meant that I can concentrate on my studying, not how to pay for my studies. I'm now able to go to university in London, fulfil my ambition of studying mental health nursing, and start the career I've wanted for a long time.” For more information about the Open Evening, the Advanced Learner Loans or the courses on offer, visit www. bridgwater.ac.uk The new Adult Training and Skills Guide 2016/17 is now available online, or by contacting the Information and Guidance team by calling 01278 441234 or emailing info@bridgwater.ac.uk

It is probably the biggest music event in the Burnham/Highbridge area this year.

The sounds coming from St. Andrew's church, Burnham on Sea on Saturday 23rd April 2016, were not of cannons or bombs, but The Burnham & Highbridge Choral Society, along with soloists Katy Garden and Amon-Ra Twilley, accompanied by an orchestra with full percussion, performing Karl Jenkins The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace. A Tomb with a View Stage 2 drama are proudly presenting their latest production at Berrow Village Hall in early June. Comedy-thriller "A Tomb With a View", centres on the aptly named Tomb family who are impatiently awaiting the reading of their late fathers will. The play is set in a sinister old library presided over by a portrait of a grim faced, mad eyed old man. There, a crusty lawyer reads a will (involving millions) to an equally creepy family. One has werewolf tendencies, another wanders around in a toga like Julius Caesar and a third is a mild mannered old lady who plants more than seeds in her flower beds. The terrible Tombs are desperate to hear who will inherit Septimus Tomb's millions but the arrival of unknown authoress Ermyntrude Ash and her male secretary throws them into a state of panic when they realise she is the main beneficiary. Not so much a case of 'who done it?' but 'who keeps doing it' - it isn’t long before the body count rises... With a series of twists and turns and more convolutions than a rattle snake, by the third act, there are more corpses than live members left in the cast. Will anyone survive? and just who is behind all the murders and mayhem? Find out as Stage 2 present: "A Tomb With a View" by Norman Robbins. This hilarious production will be performed on Thurs 9th June, Fri 10th June and Saturday 11th June at Berrow Village Hall, Parsonage Road, Berrow Burnham on Sea. Doors open at 7pm with all performances beginning at 7.30pm. Come and see a great value, highly entertaining local drama production! Advance tickets, priced £7, are available from Grahame on 01278 782319 or Ken on 01278 795619.

Will you be affected by the “Benefit Cap?” Citizens Advice Sedgemoor expect as many as 275 households in Sedgemoor to be affected by changes in Benefits due to take effect in the autumn of 2016. If your household income is more than £384.62 a week (in Sedgemoor) or if you are a single person with an income greater than £257.69 a week, this may mean you. At present the maximum income from benefits may be £500 a week for a family, or £350 a week for single people. So the new limits are quite a bit lower. Your Housing Benefit or Universal Credit may be reduced to ensure that you don’t get more than the new limit. People who are affected will need to be careful to ensure that their rent is paid as a matter of priority. It is quite possible that the Cap will reduce Housing Benefit - so rent will go unpaid - and eviction will follow. Homes in Sedgemoor are offering help to prepare for this change. The Cap is intended to affect people of working age. There are some exemptions if you receive Working Tax Credits or if you work enough hours to do so. “Household” means that both partners and dependent children and other adults are taken into account. This is a time of major change for Benefits Claimants. The Cap comes within a few weeks of the introduction of Universal Credit in Sedgemoor: that is paid not weekly but monthly – so claimants will need to budget carefully. Anyone in need of Advice should call at the office at Clarence House or call Advice Line on 03 444 88 9623.

GARDENING JOBS FOR JUNE Late frosts should be gone so all tender flowers and vegetables can be planted out. Water all your plants well before and after planting and watch out for slugs and snails. Lift any remaining spring bulbs when the foliage turns yellow and leave them in a dry place. Clip hedges, prune early flowering clematis and dead head roses. Keep picking peas and broad beans when they are young and fresh. Protect your strawberries from birds and pick the fruit regularly.
Keep sowing lettuce, radish, carrots, beetroot and spinach, sow some greens for winter use. Sow biennials like wallflowers and sweet william in a prepared seed bed. After the “June drop” of apples, pears and plums assess whether the remaining fruit needs further thinning. Mow lawns regularly and continue to tie in climbing plants. Ventilate greenhouses and damp down floors during any hot spells. Keep the hoe on the go!

From base waste to recycling ‘gold’ Is your recycling the equivalent of 24 caret gold, lumps of old iron, or a bucket or two of Burnham on Sea mud? Recycling is all about its value as a raw material. Your recycling is like the ore dug out of a mine to be smelted into metal ingots. The higher the grade of ore, the less time, energy and resources are needed to dig it out and turn it into products for sale. Exactly the same is true of your recycling, from the food and drink cans to glass and plastic bottles, paper and card to aluminium foil and aerosols. That is why you should rinse out containers, take tops off bottles and nozzles off aerosols, scrunch the foil together so it can be separately processed, and never let textiles get wet. And that is why we want only the materials listed for recycling and nothing else, and why Somerset goes for kerbside sorting rather than an all-in-one-box system. Any contamination, such as broken glass in paper, beverage cartons or food-filled Clean stream: avoiding pizza boxes in cardboard, or adding other plastic items to plastic bottles, lowers the contamination will help hold value of what needs to be a very “clean stream” of each material. down your costs “When in doubt, leave it out” is a good mantra to follow, and then check what you ought to do on our website or with your council’s customer services. Double sorting at the kerbside and recycling sites – first you, then collection crews or site staff at Highbridge and elsewhere – ensures that Somerset’s recycling always finds markets to be turned into new products and packaging, and none ends up in costly and polluting landfill. That holds down the long-term cost of the waste services you pay for. Your efforts to put out high-quality recycling with no contamination are essential. Please keep it up, and do nudge family, friends and neighbours to do better. For more on how to turn your base waste into recycling gold, see www.somersetwaste.gov.uk. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset.
