Food and Drink Festival Home brewing has had a bit of a revival in recent years - along with other austerity busting habits like baking and using the slow cooker. Sales of home brewing kits for cider, beer and wine have soared by 75% at some outlets year on year. And who can blame them, when the cost of production can be as low as ÂŁ1 a bottle for cider, ales and hedgerow wines - which is a lot less than the off-license or down the pub (and with added home-made satisfaction!) If you have been brewing your own, you now have a chance to test it against other brewers and fermenters at The Great Burnham Brew Off - part of the Burnham-on-Sea Food & Drink Festival. The competition is free to enter and has classes for cider, kit wine and hedgerow wines. Competition sponsors, Balliihoo told us: "As a local firm we wanted to get behind this competition to find the best home-brewed cider and wines in Somerset. We have heard so many stories of people boasting that their brew is the best - but now is the time to put those bottles to the test." Festival Director, Bev Milner Simonds added: "This is a fun competition with all home brewers encouraged to look out a bottle of their top-tipple and bring it along to The Princess Theatre before 2.30pm on Saturday 24th May for judging. We want to thank Balliihoo for their support this year - the task of judging is a tough one and we are pleased their team have volunteered their palettes." For more information and an application form, see the festival website www.burnhamonseafoodfestival.org.

Community Theatre at the Princess A new community in-house theatre company for people wanting to get involved in theatre has recently put on their first production - proving very successful. Members of the company can get involved with acting, directing, writing, backstage, technical, costume or administration. Come to a meeting or contact Kim at gkcook@sky.com. The meetings take place at the Princess Theatre and Arts Centre on Thursday evenings from 7pm to 9pm. The next production will be ‘The Meeting’ by Lewis Coleman, on Friday 4th July.
Start of Summer Concerts Burnham and Highbridge Band are pleased to announce that their popular Sunday Evening Concerts will begin again on the evening of Sunday 25th May. Each concert, held on the last Sunday of each month begins at 7.45pm. Admission price is still £6 (£5 for under 16s and over 65s). The ticket price has not changed for five years now and represents good value for an evening of popular and light brass band music. David Fisher, the Musical Director, selects music with a wide appeal to both the general public and to brass band enthusiasts. Ken Henton, secretary told LocalReach: “Gone are the days of long operatic overtures and intricate and none-too-musical contest test pieces. We are a concert, rather than a contesting band and we can therefore afford the time regularly to add new pieces to our repertoire, pieces which appeal to the general public as well as brass band aficionados. This has really paid off over the time David has been our MD and I believe we offer a really attractive programme of music in our concerts.” This year tickets are available from the Princess Box Office. So, local or a visitor to Burnham, come and enjoy an evening of entertaining light music.

Road Smart: New scheme to reduce road casualties In just one year in Avon and Somerset, 452 people were killed or seriously injured on our roads. Around one third of these were young people aged 17 to 24. To help reduce this figure we have launched a free education course for drivers, and learner drivers, in the force area. Road Smart is available for all drivers, but we are especially keen to encourage young drivers to attend the session. The course has been specially created on behalf of Avon and Somerset Police. It aims to raise awareness of potential hazards on the roads and build on motorists’ existing driving knowledge and experience. - 95% of all collisions are caused by human error. - 1 in 5 new drivers will have a crash within their first six months of driving. - Road crashes are the biggest single killer of young people in the UK. Some insurance companies will offer a discount to young drivers who have completed the workshop. The course is a one-off interactive session, held at venues across the force area. It is based on the successful training package that is used for driver awareness courses nationally. Supt Ian Smith said: “This is a fantastic opportunity, to benefit from a free course that could be a life-saving opportunity. The training will be delivered by the TTC group - a professional road safety education provider. The national course this is based upon is widely hailed as excellent and thoughtprovoking and really does influence driver behaviour.” Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said: “I am delighted Avon and Somerset Police have designed a unique road safety package to further educate all road users, but particularly young drivers." Courses will take place from the end of April for the next 12 months. Two versions of the session have been created, one for young drivers (aged 17 to 24) and one for other drivers. If you are, or know of, a young driver who would like to join this course, or you are aged 25 or over and interested in attending, go to www.roadsmart.org for further details.

Big Celebrations in Cannington As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, Somerset Wildlife Trust - the county’s leading environmental voluntary body – will be visiting Bridgwater College’s Walled Gardens of Cannington during the weekend of 24 and 25 May; there will be animals and wildlife for everyone to see. The Gardens are home to many species of wildlife, and recently welcomed five rescue hedgehogs from Secret World Wildlife Rescue Centre, who will now live within the Gardens. The Gardens have taken in the hedgehogs, in the hope they will form a colony and continue to thrive within their new, safe environment. With luck the hedgehogs will breed, and any youngsters will be relocated to new and suitable habitats to boost the wild populations which are currently under threat. The Walled Gardens are the perfect location for them, representing a large, enclosed environment where they are free to wander around during the night when there are no visitors, with plenty of dark, cool areas to sleep during the day. Secret World has also donated five hedgehog houses so each can have its own space, as they are naturally solitary animals. To find out more about Somerset’s wildlife, be sure to visit the Gardens on the weekend of 24 and 25 May, where experts will be on hand ready to answer all your questions. The Gardens will also be hosting part of the Cannington Summer Fair - a celebration day of Bridgwater College student success. With the Gardens open to visitors for free, they will have a vintage 1940s theme – including vintage bus rides, all taking place on Saturday 7 June. With more and more colour bursting into life every day in the Gardens, they really are a treasure not to be missed. Entry to the Gardens not needed for Tea Room, Plant Shop or Gift shop.

DIY The Low-Waste Way Reduce, reuse, recycle: plan that project to save money, time and hassle - by Nick Cater With Easter just gone and two bank holidays to come this month, is it any wonder that everyone in Burnham-on-Sea is probably deep into DIY? But what are the best ways to make extra savings when repairing and improving your home, by wasting less and both recycling and reusing more? The key is to think through the project before you start, from tools and materials needed, to the waste that will be created. When considering equipment, ask: “Why buy?” Friends, family or neighbours might lend items for nothing, and there are plenty of hire firms nearby. Estimate materials with care so you buy the right amount and can quickly top up any shortfall, or check that the shop will take back and refund any excess. Have a think about what might be left over, and whether there could be another use – or small project – for off-cuts, odd tiles or a few bricks. Remember that recycling centres – from five day Highbridge to seven-day Bridgwater Saltlands – charge for taking hardcore and rubble, including ceramics like old sinks, unless it is one carrier bag or less, so find out and factor in that cost. But much else can be deposited for free for recycling, from wood to metals and more. Take care to check if anything being updated – sheds or storage heaters or fire surrounds – is made of or contains asbestos, as that will need special bagging and handling, and make a call to Bridgwater or Highbridge to see if they have space. Lots of plasterboard will also need a quick advance call. With all that hassle, there is an alternative - why not just take the weekend off and get in a tradesperson, taking care that they have a waste carrier licence to take your rubbish away? With May’s upcoming bank holidays, no collections on each Monday means pick-ups are one day later throughout the week, including Friday’s taking place on the Saturday. For more details, visit www.somersetwaste.gov.uk. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset.

There’s No Place Like Home When Secret World animal care manager Sara took one of the orphaned badger cubs home in a kitten basket, the little critter took to his cosy new home straight away. Staff approached the local Pets at Home store in Bridgwater to see if they would be able to help by donating an additional three Baby Bea beds. Store manager Stuart Duncan was only too happy to help provide three additional cosy beds for the additional badger cubs and other animals to use. The badger cubs are now enjoying the comfort and around-the-clock care at the wildlife rescue centre based near Highbridge. Staff and volunteers are getting the site ready for the first open weekend. Secret World will open its doors over the Easter Weekend and visitors will be able to see some of the most recent admissions including badger cubs, fox cubs and other animals being cared for at the centre. Pauline Kidner charity founder said: “The annual ‘Badger Bonanza Weekend’ was an opportunity to find out all about badgers, their secretive underground lives and how to help these animals in difficult times.” She went on to add: “We are so grateful to Pets at Home for donating the beds and for choosing to support Secret World this year with fundraising.” For more information please visit www.secretworld.org or phone 01278 783250.

Worried about password security? You have probably heard on the news recently about issues surrounding the Heartbleed bug which has affected many supposedly secure websites. This leads me to explain how possibly things can turn bad with regard to passwords. Essentially, most people use either a single password, versions of a single password, or a handful of passwords for all websites. This can be something as simple as the name of the Pet, Grandchildren or similar. The main area of concern for me, is that although when you enter a password onto a website (for example to log in) and this will often be encrypted (i.e padlock symbol and https showing in the browser), the password may be viewed easily by the people that manage the website. So for example, if you use your pet’s name for a website, this password could then be visible to the website owner and/or IT staff. These people could then try to access other websites / e-mail accounts using the same password. Have you ever experienced your own e-mail account being hacked? If so, this could be because you have used the same password on another website – both your e-mail address and password could be viewed by the staff on this website, and then attempts made to access your e-mail account using the same details. The problem is that who can reasonably be expected to remember all passwords – especially having a different one for every website? There is some software called Roboform www.roboform.com which will securely remember your passwords and encrypt them on your computer / mobile device (covers windows, apple, android and ios). This may be better than your little black book of passwords!! If you are worried about passwords that you have previously supplied on a website, the best course of action is to change the password and make them unique for each website. This last month has also been very busy for us, as we have been upgrading many old Windows XP machines – please get in touch if you are still on Windows XP and would like to discuss upgrading. We can help manage the whole process for you. Neil Buzzard, Computer Problem Solutions Ltd. Tel: 07973 536299 or E-mail sales@e-cps.co.uk

We need your help and ideas for further projects.
Minimum Price for Alcohol As of mid-May, a change to the law relating to the sale of alcohol will come into effect. This will make it an offence to sell or supply alcohol, for consumption either on or off the premises, at a price that is less than the cost of the Duty on the alcohol plus VAT. If alcohol is sold, or supplied, below that price, then the offence is committed by the person selling the alcohol or the Designated Premises Supervisor or the holder of the Premises Licence. If anyone has concerns that premises within Sedgemoor are not complying with these new minimum prices, they should contact our Licensing team by calling 0845 408 2546 or local rate 01278 435435. We will then investigate and work with Avon and Somerset Constabulary to assess what action, if any, is required. Ultimately breaking this law could result in prosecution and a review of the licence.

Elise De Veill
Quiz Night
Life can be a balancing act at times, and sometimes we need a little help and focus to get us through. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy concentrates on where you want to be in life and can free you from past problems. This enables us to focus on the here and now, looking towards the solutions that will create positive change and let go of unwanted behaviours and habits. Hypnotherapy reduces stress and helps you think more positively and clearly. It allows you to harness your creativity and emotions in order to do what YOU want to do, promoting rational thought to help you achieve goals. Elise says “I am so enthusiastic about getting people to where they want to be in life and take great pleasure from witnessing the change hypnotherapy can bring to people’s lives in a relatively short space of time, it’s simply an amazing process. Hypnosis is a state of focused attention, where the conscious and subconscious minds work together to help you achieve whatever goals you may have in mind. Over a period of time new pathways of thinking are forged, so that this becomes your new default network. When we feel relaxed and calm we have intellectual control over our behaviors and are less driven by our more instinctive behavioral patterns which can sometimes start to control areas of our lives in an undesirable fashion. Elise runs practices in Burnham-on-Sea, Bridgwater, and Taunton. 07795 561905/ 01278 788394

Somerset Rebels Speedway Speedway riders are the modern-day gladiators of the sporting world, 4 riders per race going head to head on 500cc motorbikes over 4 laps of the shale-based oval track, the bikes accelerating from 0-60mph in just 3 seconds, faster than an F1 racing car, but have no gears and NO BRAKES! The Somerset Rebels are one of a number of speedway clubs that operate in the UK from Plymouth in the south to Edinburgh in the north, their Oaktree Arena track being situated just off junction 22 on the M5, they race their home matches most Friday nights throughout the speedway season that operates from mid-March until the end of October. Formed in just 2000, the Somerset Rebels currently operate in the sport’s Premier League, which is the 2nd tier of racing in the UK, their Oaktree Arena track, which is 300 metres in length, is widely acknowledged to be one of the best speedway tracks in the UK, a fact borne out by the fact that Sky Sports are annual visitors to the track in order to broadcast one of the Rebels home matches, and will, once again, be bringing their cameras to the Oaktree Arena on Tuesday 11th June. A speedway meeting comprises 15 heats of pulsating action of what must be one of the most extreme spectator sports in the UK, but it is also one that appeals to fans of all ages, from 1-91! Somerset meetings get underway at 7.30pm, but from when the gates open at 5.30pm until 7pm fans can enter the pits where you can watch the riders prepare their bikes, take photos and also have a chat to the riders – what other sport can you get ‘up close and personal’ with the main people. Kids can also apply to be meeting mascots or hold birthday parties in the Oaktree Clubhouse adjacent to the track. Looking for a team bonding night out or something different to treat your staff then have a look at the Rebels website to see our offers and discounts or just simply email us. So why not give it a try, we know that you won’t be disappointed……… www.somersetrebels.co.uk
