From the editor I have to say, I have been bowled-over by the amount of editorial I have received this month, literally in some cases - if you are interested in indoor bowls, short mat or the return to outdoor bowls in the spring, there is information in this issue!

There are plans underway for this year’s Food Festival, with recipes to whet your taste buds, maybe you’ll venture to the monthly Farmers’ Market to look for your produce.

The Folkfest may seem a long way off, but fundraising activities are underway so that this event maintains its success of recent years.

Regular groups are looking for members to take up new hobbies; this can be demonstrated by the success of the local U3A - a group that certainly knows how to attract new members.

With the awful weather we have been experiencing since Christmas and the heart-felt concern that goes out to the local communities devastated by the floods, it has demonstrated the strength that communities can have if we all pull together. I hope you enjoy this month’s edition and I look forward to receiving your correspondence for next month.

Highbridge Community Hall There are two events organised for March. Firstly on Saturday 8th March at 7.30pm, Prize Bingo is being held, with a raffle and refreshments, set to be an enjoyable evening. Later in the month there will be a Barn Dance on Saturday 29th March. The doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Burnham Community Church Events for the month of March include ‘Oasis Cafe Culture’ on Sunday 1st at 6pm at The Cafe, Princess Theatre and Arts Centre. Listen to acoustic music, and maybe a story and a poem or two. Pancakes will be served – all free!

Towards the end of the month, on Saturday 29th at 4pm, at West Huntspill Methodist Church (kindly loaned), ladies will have the opportunity to be waited on at a Ladies Vintage Tea Party - a posh tea served in china cups, with finger sandwiches and cakes to die for! Brent Knoll Bazaar On the second Saturday in every month at Brent Knoll Parish Hall between 10am and 12 noon, a farmers’ market and Parish cafe will be open. There is local produce, Asian food, a vegetable stall, Westcroft Cider, homemade cakes and savouries, Phoenix Cards, handmade cards, jewellery, children’s games, toys and puzzles, local crafts and more. Berrow Conservation Group For the meeting in March a talk entitled 'Hedgerows, a habitat for our wildlife' has been arranged.

Sharing his knowledge with us will be Pete Grainger - an ecologist at Sedgemoor District Council.

Pete has also been the Chair for the Somerset Hedge Group for more than ten years. Pete will be giving an overview of why hedges are such an important part of our countryside and a habitat for our wildlife, and will also inform us how they can be managed to maintain them in good order. The talk will begin at the earlier time of 7.00pm at Berrow Village Hall on Tuesday 25th March. All are welcome. There will be a fee of £1 for members and £2.50 for visitors. Refreshments included.

The Cross of Christ A Passiontide Devotion for choir and congregation The very first edition of ‘The Cross of Christ’ was published in 1956, and it tells of the Passion story from Betrayal to Crucifixion, using popular hymns and much-loved anthems by Ouseley, Goss and Mozart, and chorales by JS Bach. We would love to perform this beautiful work for you, but need your help, as there is some congregation participation, for example, some readings. If you would like to read please speak to me (Sybil Jones) after service on Sunday - find me in the choir vestry. We can't do this without a congregation, so please, please try to join us, to enjoy this wonderful story.

There will be tea and biscuits after the service to say thank you to you all for coming. The date is Sunday 6th April 6.30pm at St Andrew’s Church, Burnham-on-Sea.

March on down to the Community Centre Come and join Burnham-on-Song - a local choir going from strength to strength. Sing songs from the shows, the movies and popular music. No musical experience necessary, just a desire to have a good time in good company. We meet on Tuesday evenings, 7.30pm - 9pm at the Community Centre, Berrow Road - £2.50 per session. Are you the Festival Sweetheart?

The Burnham-on-Sea Food & Drink Festival have launched their Festival Bursary offering up to five free trading pitches at the Festival on 24th May. Festival Director Sarah Milner Simonds said: “Through the Food & Drink Festival we have shown our commitment to supporting local traders to build sustainable businesses and now we want to help new businesses make their first steps into trading. We recognise we have an opportunity to assist in developing the skills, abilities and knowledge of all food and drink producers.”

Fellow festival Director Beverley Milner Simonds continued: “The scheme is designed to encourage business start-up and self-employment within Somerset. We are providing up to five discretionary bursary awards for pitches at the May Food & Drink Festival. We had a great footfall (over 7000) at each of the 2013 festivals and we hope that opportunity will be seized on by new traders.”

One of last year's benefactors, The Chilli Alchemist, Jay Webley told us: “I was so pleased to be offered a bursary from Burnham-on-Sea Food & Drink Festival as it provided me with an opportunity to start building my customer base. Having invested heavily, the financial respite was most welcome and a brilliant idea that should be encouraged and adopted by other event organisers. I had a great day trading at last year's festival; the feedback from customers was great and the support from other traders really encouraged me.”

The Bursary is for food and drink producers who have not engaged in retail trade before. (You may have been producing and selling direct to restaurant or a business but not direct to the public.) But time is running out - applications need to be in before 14 March and can be downloaded from www. burnhamonseafoodfestival.org During the festival, the Home Brew Competition returns, which is open to all amateurs, and takes place in the Princess Theatre. Bring your home-brewed ciders, kit wines or hedgerow wines with a completed application form to the Princess Theatre before 2.30pm on Saturday 24th May. Sea Food Diet Pie During the storms, the fishermen were out in force on the beach, braving the weather for a bite of cod. With fish being good for the body as well as the mind, it’s not surprising - and we should be reminded that not all fat is bad! So bring back the butter and cream – living in Somerset really can be good for the health. Here’s my tribute to the best bits of our stormy seaside life. Seaweed packed with minerals and easy to buy now, or forage from the beach. Wasabi - due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial qualities (and it wakes up a pie). Comfort food is more comforting when you know it’s doing you good.

Ingredients 250g white fish, 250g smoked fish / Dried wakame or fresh seaweed blanched and chopped 25g butter, 1 tbsp plain flour, 1/3 pt milk & cream for white sauce / 1 tsp wasabi or 3 tsp horseradish sauce / Floury potatoes / Olive oil / Egg yolk Method First rehydrate the dried seaweed with some cold water or stock. Peel and boil the potatoes, chopped small, for the mash. Cut fish into large chunks, removing pin bones and skin. Arrange in the bottom of your ovenproof dish. Melt a knob of butter gently and stir in enough flour to absorb the fat so it looks like wet sand. Keep stirring it with a whisk or spoon over a gently heat, until it pales and starts to look like dry sand. Take it off the heat. Check the mash, look out the window, stroke the dog, or have a little drink. Now add a glug of milk and whisk until totally smooth, when you can add the rest. Back on the heat, add wasabi/horseradish, keep stirring until it thickens, and add more milk, or cream at will. You want a rich custardy consistency. Make the mash with olive oil and an egg yolk to make it fluffy with a good crust, and finish the top with waves.

Bake in the oven at gas mark 4, 180C, 350F for 20-30 mins, or until your boat comes in. Warning: You should only forage for foods you are confident in.

Rotary Charity Swimarathon The third Swimarathon organised by the Rotary Club of Burnham-on-Sea took place at Brean Splash on Sunday 9th February. The previous year’s Swimarathons proved highly popular with local voluntary organisations and businesses, and raised substantial sums of money for Rotary charities. For the 2014 event the Rotary Club decided that the participating teams should retain all of the money they raised for their own good cause or charity, thus ensuring that the local community would be beneficiaries from their efforts. Seventeen teams made up of a total of 110 swimmers who took part, achieving a total between them of 4,554 lengths of the pool, which equates to some 114 km or roughly the distance from Burnham to Reading! A team from BARB had to withdraw at a late stage as its members were on flood rescue duty on the Levels. The teams’ final sponsorship totals have not yet been calculated but are believed to be in excess of £2500. Rotarian Jim Tancock, said: “This has been the most successful Swimarathon yet. The Club is grateful to the owners and staff of Brean Splash for their hospitality and facilities, to the sponsors of the medals awarded to participants, and to everyone else who worked so hard to make this event a success.”

Alongside more traditional local cheeses, meats, baked goods and vegetables, the market now includes Stefano’s Homemade Italian Food, bringing Burnham an authentic range of traditional Italian dishes to enjoy at home. Bridgwater College Steps into Spring With Lambing Fun Day on the 16th March and The Walled Gardens of Cannington beginning to bloom, it seems that spring might finally be arriving!

Despite the heavy rainfall, the Gardens have seen a good number of visitors over the winter months. Students, volunteers and staff were busy in the autumn planting thousands of bulbs, and The Blue Garden will be a carpet of blue with various Anemone, Muscari ‘Mount Hood’, Chionodoxa forbesii and Scilla siberica as we move into spring.

Two thousand Daffodils were added to the mixed border - the peachy-pink petals of Narcissus ‘Replete’, alongside the ruffled trumpets of Narcissus ‘Taurus’ will provide an eye-catching welcome to visitors. Many of the trees in the Walled Gardens will also be flowering.

The seasonal annual displays will bring some vibrancy and colour back into the landscape.

The border outside the Botanical Glasshouse was designed by the dedicated volunteer team, with various cultivars of Polyanthus flowing through the middle in whites, blues and greens inspired by the movement of a river. We had no idea how prophetic this would be when the design was conceived!

At the end of the month, the Gardens will be open for the first Sunday opening of the season, to celebrate Mothering Sunday. All mothers visiting us on the day will receive a special gift (whilst stocks last), so why not bring your mum along for a lovely stroll in the Gardens and a treat or two in the Tea Room! Normal entry fees apply – entry to the Gardens not needed for Tea Room, Plant Shop or Gift shop.

Festival of the Arts Final preparations are underway for the 67th Highbridge Festival of the Arts. With many entries from across the south west, this festival promises something for everyone, covering Dance, Music, Speech and Drama. Sedgemoor Conservation Volunteers The next event is on Sunday 2nd March at Berrow Dunes ST 295535. Tasks will involve the cutting and burning sea-buckthorn, and possibly planting marram grass. Meet at the small car park opposite John Fowler’s Sandy Glade Caravan Park on B3140.

The work program for the sites owned by Somerset Wildlife Trust, Natural England, Butterfly Conservation, Plantlife International, Woodland Trust or a private individual and operated as a Nature Reserve, provide our insurance cover, but to comply, we ask that those under 12 be accompanied by an adult. We supply protective gear where required, as well as tools, hot drinks and training. Please wear suitable work clothes and bring boots or wellies, waterproofs and lunch.

Burnham-on-Sea Meet-ups We are a local group as part of netmums.com. We are looking for local parents who want to meet in an informal way with and without the kids.

Sometimes being a new parent, or relocating, can leave you feeling isolated.

Thriving U3A group in Burnham After another successful year when membership increased by 100 to nearly 600, the Burnham U3A continues to offer over fifty different activities, led by their own members.

Recently we have seen the Ukulele group established, expanding the ability for musical participation alongside the already thriving ‘Singing for Pleasure’ and ‘Concert Party.’ The groups we offer are diverse, with arts and crafts, five table tennis groups, barn dancing, strollers and walkers, languages, book clubs, games and travel to name but a few.

Now in its twenty-first year, the U3A are always ready to celebrate, and this year has been no exception. A cream tea, attended by the Mayor, was organised to honour both our President, Ken Hindle, award of the British Empire Medal and longstanding member Tony Winterburns’ Arctic Star medal. We also held an extremely successful Open Day where Group Leaders were available to discuss their section, a New Members afternoon and, of course, we packed into the Church for our annual Christmas service, followed by mince pies and teas at the Community Centre.

Affected by the Weather?

The last month has seen a huge increase in calls to my company regarding broadband problems in the Burnham and Highbridge areas. Most of these were down to problems on the phone line, so if you have experienced symptoms when making calls such as a crackling line, then the chances are that this will adversely affect your broadband signal. This typically causes speed problems and/or disconnections of the internet signal. If your phone call quality is not good, my advice would be to report the issue to your telephone company – quite often they can run a check that will show if the problem is within your property or not. Should you need any help with such issues, please see our advert on the same page to get in touch. We also offer a speed check-up service, whereby if you find that your internet connection is slow, we can work out what can be done to improve the situation with little or no extra financial outlay.

The last month also saw a large number of calls regarding problems with the recent Apple iTunes update for PC computers. It would seem that there is a conflict between the new release of iTunes and previous Apple software which was historically bundled with iTunes. The best advice is to remove all traces of Apple software (apart from the Apple Mobile Device Support which generally cannot be uninstalled), and then re-start the computer and re-download iTunes from www.itunes.com.

Previously, I have mentioned about the need to back-up your data, so please remember to keep a copy of any important information on at least two different storage mediums. Quite often people remove important data from their computer in a hope to speed the machine up, but quite often this makes little or no difference to speed. In most cases, I advise people to keep the data on their computer and back it up onto either an external hard drive, memory stick, or online backup service such as Skydrive (soon to be renamed Onedrive due to a trademark issue with the owner of Sky TV). Often, when a computer has failed, people comment "it was working fine yesterday", so please be warned that IT equipment can fail at any time without warning, so please don’t put off backing-up important files. If there is something on your computer that you cannot afford to be without, please back it up. Data recovery can be very costly, so for example if the hard drive were to fail in a computer, specialist recovery work can cost hundreds of pounds. Contact us if you need help setting up a back-up system – this can be automated so there is little or no effort required.

Age UK Somerset, Keeping Active The Age UK Somerset Tai Chi class meet every Thursday at 2pm, and benef from sessions with regular teacher Cheryl Mountford. Government guidelines for physical activity state that older adults should incorporate activities to improve balance and coordination at least two days a week, example activities include Yoga and Tai Chi. Cheryl said: “It’s not strenuous – it’s about breathing, relaxing and combining slow movements, and is great for general overall health”.

Burnham Dreamscheme During the February half term a successful AGM and 2014 launch were held at the Bay Centre. The young members aged between 7 and 13 had the chance to nominate community tasks and treats they would like to undertake throughout the year. A new reward card was issued to all members to record the points they earn, to give an incentive to earn the points to reach individual targets. New members and adult volunteers are welcomed to give the young people a voice in their community and a chance to make a difference to the area they live in. The Dreamscheme is a national project, started almost twenty years ago, with the first scheme in Sheffield.

Capture Burnham This new project is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Burnham and Highbridge Town Council, and Somerset Film. The project is being overseen by the North Sedgemoor Local History Group and needs your help to record the history of Burnham for the future generations. Nominations are being sought to create an online archive for the future, recording aspects of Burnham’s past. You can help shape what is included - nominate an object, a memory or place for consideration.

Once Upon a Time in Burnham – Wrecks When wrecks are mentioned we tend to think ships being ripped to pieces on jagged rocks, probably lured to their end by characters like those created by Daphne Du Maurier in Jamaica Inn. Wrong! No sailor in his right mind would head for shore in a gale, unless he knew exactly where he was and that it was safe to do so. Furthermore, it is likely that the majority of wrecks took place on sand, or mud banks. It is believed that in excess of two thousand vessels met their end on the Goodwin Sands off the Kent coast.

Although not in the same league, the Bristol Channel too has provided the last resting place for many ships over the centuries, and the coast between Burnham and Brean has also been responsible for its fair share. In the very early days it was customary to bury the remains of a drowned sailor, washed up on the beach at a point above high water mark. Until around three hundred or so years ago, seaside churches set aside a plot in their graveyards, usually on the North and therefore unfashionable side of the church, to receive the bodies of such unfortunates. In some churches, the locations of such plots are not generally known. In Saint Bridget’s at Brean, the plot is clearly marked with a heart shaped stove enamelled plate which replaces an earlier wrought iron marker from around 1870.

The best known local wreck is that of the Nornen which was run aground opposite the church at Berrow in 1897 when, after the wind had dropped and the tide gone out, the crew dropped over the side and walked ashore. Contrast this with the James and Sarah, a 62 ton ketch belonging to the Goodland family who were coal merchants in Taunton. Her remains lie beam on to the shore, but a few hundred yards to the South West, since the 15th of September seventeen years earlier, when she was lost with all hands.

Because of the great tidal range of the Bristol Channel tides, all the other wrecks, even those that are known, are in the deep water channel, and as they present no risk to shipping, do not appear on any admiralty charts. Even the Margaret and the Moss Rose, two Bridgwater vessels that were seen to go down from the shore at Burnham after being driven onto the Gore within hours of each other on the 15th March 1836, have no known resting place.

March Word in the Garden The Flower Garden

Vegetables

If you did not manage to sow any sweet peas seeds at the beginning of October, the beginning of March is the next best time to sow for summer flowering. If the weather is still cold you will need to give the seed some heat to get them to germinate.

Most of the main crop vegetables are sown this month when the weather is suitable - broad beans, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, carrots, leeks, parsnips, spinach, swede, garden turnips, mustard and cress, lettuce, radish and onions for salad.

Remove the dead blooms from flowering bulbs in pots. Bulbs can then be planted out in the garden.

Hoeing makes the soil sweeter and allows air to penetrate to the plants roots. It also helps to bring soil pests to the surface to be eaten by birds.

Watercress does not need running water to grow; it needs lots of moisture. Early potatoes take about twelve weeks to grow, second early potatoes take about eighteen weeks. Main crop potatoes take about twenty four weeks depending on the variety.

Coffee Mornings in aid of Educate the Kids (Kenya) Educate the Kids is a charity raising funds to educate children at the Jolaurabi School near Mombasa in Kenya. The children commence school aged 4 – 5 in the kindergarten and after three years move to Primary. They are all sponsored – many by people in the Burnham area, for £72 per year. There are approximately 650 children in total. Coffee Mornings are being held at the Methodist Church, College Street on the third Saturday of each month, from 10am – noon. There are many stalls – cakes, Kenyan Jewellery, books, bric-abrac, clothes and a raffle. Do come along and learn more about the children and the charity.

Mark Parish Church The Burnham & Highbridge Band will be making a welcome return after many years to Mark Parish Church on Saturday 5th April starting at 7.30pm. The Band’s repertoire is increasingly wide-ranging to appeal to ever-changing audiences, and last year alone, they played some 120 different pieces ranging from popular classics to modern adaptations. Walk into Spring with Sedgemoor Ramblers The bad weather has created a few challenges for us over the past few months, but our walk leaders have done a brilliant job re-planning their walks. Although it has been impossible to avoid the mud and flooded footpaths completely, we have been able to get out into the countryside and enjoy some good walking. Our Spring/Summer programme will be available soon but we still have some lovely walks to look forward to in March – Minehead, Dunster, Wookey Hole, Nether Stowey (shorter Saturday 6 mile walk), Watersmeet, and a Channel to Channel walk from Marsh to Kilmington.

Donations Donations of food, drink and other supplies have been pouring in, so much so, that the volunteer organisations and SDC staff are overwhelmed with ‘stuff’. The message is – thank you so, so much, we really don’t need any more at present and we do not want anything to go to waste. Obviously, as the emergency is likely to continue for the immediate future, stocks will need to be replenished.

The forms are processed every three hours. Sedgemoor Direct are logging all offers of support. This list is then circulated to Somerset Civil Contingency Unit who are coordinating the logistics of getting donation offers to needy customers and they (SCC CCU) will continue to do this as long as Sedgemoor Direct log and send on the spreadsheet - which is done on a regular three hour basis.
