Freewheelers Meet WI The April meeting for Burnham-on-Sea WI is on Tuesday 22nd April from 2pm. We meet at the Community Centre in Berrow Road, next to the swimming pool. We are pleased to welcome Duncan Smith, a representative from the charity 'Freewheelers' to our meeting this month. Freewheelers is run entirely by volunteers and is one of a number of groups that cover different parts of the country delivering blood, pathology and microbiology specimens, patient notes, X-rays, breast milk, and other medical supplies. They operate a fleet of motorcycles each equipped with high-visibility markings, blue lights and sirens for emergency use. If this service did not exist, hospitals would be forced to use taxis or commercial couriers. In 2012, they made 3648 deliveries, riding more than 120,000 miles! The Burnham-on-Sea WI welcome all to their meetings - that includes men! There is a charge of £3 for non-members. Burnham-on-Sea Farmers’ Market: Clare Turner of ‘In Clover’ Many of you will have seen Clare’s beautiful willow work at the Farmers’ Market and wondered how it’s made. Clare went to willow weaving school to learn various techniques which she then adapted to her own designs. She learnt from two different women - Mary Cross of 'Organic Matters' in Nunney taught her how to make the tepees and other plant supports, whilst Angela Morley taught her to make the hearts and stars. Clare buys her willow rods from Musgrove Willows, a family-run business in Westonzoyland who grow dozens of different varieties in all sorts of colours, sizes and flexibilities. She uses a lot of Dickie Meadows and green/brown marl because she likes their colours and waxiness/flexibility. If willow is fresh you can use it as it is - there's about six weeks of usability in it before it dries out, after which you have to soak it before use. How long do you soak it for? Well, generally a 3ft rod takes three days, 4ft needs four days and so on. Slender rods may need less time; fatter varieties may need more. Clare uses buff willow when experimenting with a new design, because the shorter soaking time means she can get cracking really quickly with it. Like all the traders at the market, Clare is happy to discuss her produce and make sure that you have all the information you need.

More Roll Out for Fibre Broadband It would seem that BT are continuing to expand their fibre broadband network in Berrow, with houses around the Rosetree Paddock side of Barton Road now being able to sign up to this service. This is highly recommended as Berrow residents generally have a very slow service (up to 2mb) – switching to fibre should increase to at least 20mb. Please note that almost all broadband providers are allowing a fibre service, so you do not need to switch to BT for this to happen A quick call to your service provider will ascertain if you can receive fibre broadband and at what cost. It has been a busy period upgrading customers' computers from Windows XP to Windows 8. After a little training, Windows 8.1 is well-received. If you have ever purchased a Windows 8 computer and don’t get on with it, remember that you can use the traditional desktop programs as well as the new style Apps, so please get in touch if you would like some help. For those who have a black Sky HD box, these can now be connected to your broadband router to allow the viewing of services such as BBC iplayer, ITV player and much more. To get a free box to allow your Sky box to connect via Wireless to your router, follow this link: https://my.sky.com/mysky/ ondemand/ For Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod owners, there has been another update. Quite often I meet people who have not installed some of the big updates - check under settings, general, software update to see if there are any new software updates. For those of you who own Apple Mac computers, we have also been helping out with software issues (and in particular internet connectivity issues), so if you do have a Mac and need help, please get in touch. Burnham Philosophy Group At the next meeting of the Burnham Philosophy Group the speaker will be established author, philosopher and speaker Gary Cox. Cox's books always have an accessible, popular style and set out to popularise philosophy to a wider readership. He will be talking about his latest book ‘The God Confusion: Why No-one Knows the Answer to the Ultimate Question’. Cox’s previous books include ‘How to Be an Existentialist’ and ‘How to Be a Philosopher’, and like these his latest book attempts an honest appraisal of the usefulness of big philosophical questions in our everyday lives. What is God? Does he/she exist? Can we know? Cox makes the bold claim that in the face of endless searching, speculation and stagnation, the only credible philosophical position is agnosticism. As always with Philosophy Group meetings, Gary's talk will be followed by a lively debate of his ideas. Open to all, the entry is free to members and only £1.50 to non-members. All are welcome. The meeting is at 7.30pm on Wednesday 2nd April at the Community Centre, on the Berrow Road. For further information about the group go to www.burnhamphilosophygroup.org.uk.

Your Seven-Day Waste Solution Efficient machine: recycling centres take 30 or more items - By Nick Cater April is seeing some important changes for Burnham-on-Sea's nearby recycling centres. Since 1st April, Bridgwater Saltlands site has been open 8am to 4pm seven days a week, including Sundays, as have the recycling centres at Frome, Minehead, Taunton and Yeovil. That expansion of hours has been funded from part of savings required by Somerset County Council, and made when too few visits regrettably led to the closure of the Community Recycling Sites at Middlezoy and Coleford. These changes will not affect the rest of the network, which will continue to be open five days a week, including 8am to 1pm on Sundays, 8am to 7pm on Mondays, and - at Highbridge Recycling Centre 8am to 4pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, or - at Cheddar Recycling Centre - 8am to 4pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. These improvements at Bridgwater and elsewhere will allow convenient access for thousands of customers at some of the county's busiest recycling centres. They will also contribute to the efforts of all local authorities, including Sedgemoor District Council, to continue driving down the already falling rate of fly-tipping. Recycling centres are efficient waste machines, taking in thirty or more materials – from metal to wood, cooking oil to beverage cartons, white goods to small electricals - as well as all the dry recycling items collected at the kerbside, such as plastic bottles or textiles. Vital for a wide range of hazardous materials, such as DIY and garden chemicals that should never go down the drain, they are also great when you have a lot to recycle, from clearing up Christmas to cleaning out your garage or shed. But do remember to save time by sorting all your materials in advance. For full information on recycling centres, opening hours, and the thirty or more materials they take, contact Somerset Direct on 0845 3459188 or visit www.somersetwaste.gov.uk/sites. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset. The Great Burnham Bake Off is back - with a new challenge! The popular Home and Professional Baker Competition returns for the fourth time to the Burnham-on-Sea Food & Drink Festival on 24th May. The Great Burnham Bake Off aims to encourage families to bake together and adds a spoonful of friendly competition between bakers. This May's competition, sponsored once again by local chartered financial planners Positive Wealth Creation Limited, has three categories for entries; home bakers (families or individuals) and professional bakers. All bakers can enter the Cake Competition and in addition home bakers can enter the Bread Competition and new Technical Challenge. All competitions are free to enter. Festival Director Beverley Milner Simonds explained, "The new Technical Challenge is taking the competition to a different level, with entrants been asked to bake a dozen sweet scones. The judges won't just be looking for taste and appearance but also twelve scones that are uniformed. We have sampled some amazing scones locally and I am sure this will be a popular and hotly contested competition.” Fellow Festival Director, Sarah Milner Simonds, continued, "We also have the support of The Tiptree World Bread Awards for the May competition, with two free entries for the winner and runner-up in the Bread Competitions. The competition is being held in London and will be judged by Great British Bake Off winner, Francis Quinn. We are really pleased to support our local bakers in this international competition.” So flour your loaf tins, prime your piping bags, get those aprons on and ready, set, bake! Download your entry forms from www.burnhamonseafoodfestival.org and present your bakes before 2pm at Somerset Skills & Learning.

APRIL Word in the Garden The Flower Garden All hardy annuals and biennials can be sown in the open border this month to produce patches of colour. Sow thinly. Plant out gladioli. Give a good mulch of manure to roses. Start tubers of dahlias in boxes. Just cover the tubers with compost. When the new shoots come up you can then use some as cuttings to increase your stock.

Vegetables Sow salad crops. Rapid growth is the secret of succulent salad crops, sowing at intervals of two or three weeks should be made of lettuce, radishes, mustard and cress and spring onions. Dress asparagus beds with a well balanced fertilizer. The ground should also be made ready for runner beans. Watch out for any late frost.
