From the editor I hope that you are enjoying the summer break; at the time of writing we are experiencing the heat wave through July and I am sat with my leg in cast following rupturing my Achilles’ tendon, which has had an effect on the amount of things I am able to do at the moment. This is not the case though for many of the community groups in Burnham-onSea and the surrounding area, who are still busy organising events throughout the town and villages. The popular Apex Fun Day is set to take place on Wednesday 7th August, which is a must for anyone with children, and the tradition of attending the Manor Gardens fete on Bank Holiday Monday is on the horizon -although this year in a slightly different format. Please keep your editorial coming forward linked to your groups and societies – although not guaranteed to be published, we do our best to include the groups where possible. What better way to reach over 10,000 households promoting your events or activities!. Deadline for the September issue is Wednesday 14th August. Jacqui Strong, Editor, jacqui@localreach.co.uk

Stay safe on the Beach The RNLI are lifeguarding at Burnham-on-Sea and Berrow beaches, from early July for the summer period, and have started their training and getting to know the beaches and the area. An RNLI beach unit will be sited at Berrow Beach and the lifeguards at Burnham will share the Jetty Beach Office on the Esplanade. Sedgemoor District Council have provided lifeguards at Burnham-on-Sea for many years but this is the first time a lifeguard service has been offered at Berrow. The RNLI will be providing lifeguarding services at both beaches on behalf of Sedgemoor District Council. SDC staff will continue to carry out other beach warden duties, as well as being trained to the Royal Life Saving Society ‘Beach Safety Wardens’ standard. The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea, and has an in-depth knowledge of lifeguarding having provided lifeguard cover across the south west for eleven years now. The charity has training programmes, infrastructure and experience to continue to provide a high-quality service, and manages lifeguards on 183 beaches nationally. The RNLI will offer education and school visits to help people enjoy the seaside safely.

The Walled Gardens of Cannington With the summer holidays fast approaching, many parents and carers are on the look-out for things to do and places to go, to keep the children entertained during their time off school. Enjoyed by adults and children alike, The Walled Gardens of Cannington have now launched their summer special – Cheeky Monkey Mondays – where children can play with the toys and games within the Gardens, whilst mum, dad, granny or granddad (whoever they come with), can enjoy a free hot drink from the Gardens’ Tea Room whilst the children play. This is ideal for friends who want to catch up with each other whilst the children entertain themselves in the Gardens, and visitors are even welcome to bring a picnic, making it a great morning, afternoon or even day out! It’s also a great place to take the children to give them some time in the outdoors, exploring the paths between the flower borders, the sub-tropical walk, and discovering the weird and wonderful plants and foliage within the Botanical Glasshouse – with arid, sub-tropical and tropical specimens creating wonder and intrigue. There are also many family-friendly events on at the Gardens through the summer months, so make sure you find out about those while you’re there, as the Gardens are for everyone in the community and beyond to enjoy. The Walled Gardens – Well Worth a Visit!

Tug of War Advanced notice that on Sunday 8th September, there will be a tug-of-war competition on the beach, supported by the Pavilion, with a £100 prize for the winning team. We need local groups, clubs and pubs to put up teams of eight to take part. The event will start at 2.30pm, to the right of the pier.

Both the Medieval and Tug of War events are in aid of the Care Centre. We still have some time slots free if there are any self help health based groups out there who need a venue, or someone wanting to start a group or run a course. Medieval Tournament on the Beach On Sunday 11th August - by the Pavilion, a Medieval Tournament is set to take place, and will include hobbyhorse joisting with knights and their ladies. The event will be attended by a 'Royal Family' to oversee the activities, and there are plans to also invite archers, mummers or Morris dancers, or jugglers and acrobats. Jousting was the national sport of England from the time of William I right through to mid 1500 and Henry VIII, so football has a long way to go to catch up yet. Choose the knight you will support and then cheer them on and boo the opposition! The stalls will be up from 2pm, and from 2.30pm the ‘Royal Family’ will arrive to start the proceedings.

Update on Tablet Computers Over the last few years, tablet computers have often replaced the traditional PC and laptop, although some people soon realise that these modern touch screen devices do have their limitations. A common complaint is that tasks performed on a PC cannot be completed to the same standard, or with such ease on a tablet. Editing of Word documents, or Excel spreadsheets is not as easy, and some find that the e-mail systems on tablet computers is not as functional. It would seem that Microsoft have realised this, and recently released the 'Surface' tablet. This comes in two main forms - the 'RT' and the 'Pro'. Both run the very nice Windows 8 operating system; the RT comes with Word, Excel and PowerPoint built in (Outlook will come up as a free update later this year), but the Surface Pro allows normal Windows applications to be installed, so essentially you have a tablet computer that can run normal Windows programs! The Surface can be purchased with 32gb, 64gb or 128gb capacity and with or without combined case/keyboard. All considered, I feel that the Surface Pro has a much better scope than the iPad, as it can act as a normal computer, and even has a USB connector. Recently there was a big price drop on the Surface (around £120 on average), but I would only consider the Surface RT if you just want a tablet with decent word processing, spreadsheet or PowerPoint capability; the RT model will not allow the installation of traditional Windows programs, although there are a multitude of Apps (specially designed programs just for Windows 8) in the inbuilt Microsoft store. If you need any help buying or setting up the Microsoft Surface, please get in touch. Neil Buzzard, Computer Problem Solutions Ltd. Tel: 07973 536299 or sales@e-cps.co.uk

What the Women’s Institute (WI) is all about The idea that all the WI do is make cakes and jam is a myth! Many of the members cannot and do not want to make cakes or jam! The Women's Institute was formed in 1915 to revitalise rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in growing and preserving food during the First World War, to help increase the supply of food to the war-torn nation. Since then the organisation's aims have broadened and the WI is now the largest voluntary women's organisation in the UK. The WI will celebrate its centenary in 2015 and currently has over 210,000 members in around 6,600 Women’s Institutes. Did you know that the WI have a college at Denman in Oxfordshire where members can spend a day or a weekend learning new skills? Did you know that the WI has a long history of campaigning on a wide range of issues that matter to women and their communities? These campaigns are as diverse as the members and often ahead of their time. For example: 1926 The WI first campaigned on school dinner provision. 1943 Almost 30 years before the law changed, a resolution demanding equal pay for equal work was passed at the AGM. 1954 A resolution against litter was passed which eventually led to the formation of Keep Britain Tidy. 1964 A resolution was voted on against smoking in public places. 1970s The WI lobbied for the introduction of breast screening clinics – this resulted in the government introducing a number of mobile screening clinics followed by a national screening programme for all women aged 50 – 64 - the first of its kind in the EU. 1980s The WI called for public facing information campaigns on HIV and AIDs. Most recently the WI has worked to raise awareness on the nature and extent of violence against women, tackled excess food packaging and focussed on the plight of the Honey Bee. So you see there is more to the WI than you may imagine! Come along to one of our meetings and see for yourself. We meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 2pm in the Community Centre in Burnham. Contact Brenda on 01278 781771 for more information.

Badger Cull will Hit Tourism, warns Head of Wildlife Rescue Centre Tourism in Somerset will suffer this summer if plans go ahead for a trial cull of badgers, says the Founder of one of the county’s best-loved wildlife attractions, Secret World Wildlife Rescue. More than 20,000 people a year visit the Secret World centre, making it part of a county-wide network of nature-friendly Somerset places that help to draw in more than 20m holiday-makers and day-trippers a year and contribute to the £760m, tourism adds to the local economy annually. But, according to the Founder Pauline Kidner: “There’s a real risk that visitors will stay away from Somerset while the killing of badgers is underway. Somerset has many natural attractions for visiting families but I know one of its best-kept secrets lies within the world-famous Cheddar Gorge. And that's where there's the oldest badger sett in the country. Scientific evidence has revealed that generations of badgers have lived in this sett for over 60,000 years. Families will be distraught if during an outing into the countryside they could possibly see an injured badger or cubs that have become separated from their mothers and are unable to fend for themselves. “Even now, we have dependant cubs that have been found starving due to mothers killed on the roads and the same will apply if the sow has been shot for the sake of an experiment which even the Government’s own scientific advisors say won’t be a cure for bovine TB.” She added: “The starvation issue is particularly distressing. Cubs depend on their mothers to teach them how to forage through the summer. I have cared for over a thousand badgers over the years and know that dependant cubs will still be underground outside of the closed season that the licence allows. So, there’s a strong likelihood of people coming across harrowing scenes of young cubs that have died slowly and painfully from hunger, or are very close to death - hardly the Somerset view that anyone will want to see, and definitely not the kind of memory visitors will want to take home.” Pauline Kidner expressed concern about the safety of their response drivers that attend injured animals during the night. This is also the second year of a badger vaccination programme carried out with the Somerset Badger Group and funded by public donations. “Some of our staff and volunteers are licenced vaccinators and will be out at night and in the early morning working in the cull areas. We have no idea of when the culling will start or where, so our people will be at risk. I have written to the Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset Police stating our concerns but have had no reply.” She said: “So far, I’ve seen no plans setting out how public safety will be secured. What are we supposed to do? There will be no closing of footpaths within the culling zone or notices. How is that going to go down with tourists? And what will it mean for our tourism jobs and livelihoods if trippers decide other areas are better options this year?” Pauline Kidner added: “I am very strongly opposed to the badger cull. It’s a senseless plan which simply cannot be justified on scientific, moral, conservation, cost or farming grounds. But regardless of personal viewpoints, the economic consequences for tourism in Somerset cannot be ignored and nor can the safety of people who live in or visit the areas where killing is due to happen. I hope people aren't waiting for the first shots to be fired or an injured badger to be found before they take notice of what's lying in store for our badgers.” Pauline Kidner has written to the Government expressing her concerns and is urging other tourism operators to do likewise. Meanwhile, the Government is to press on with plans to shoot up to 5000 badgers in Somerset and Gloucestershire this summer as part of an experiment to test if the shooting of free running badgers at night is humane, effective and efficient. Hardly any dairy farms are within these designated areas. The pilot scheme has come about because some badgers, as well as cattle, can also get bovine TB, leading to a link that they could be passing it on to livestock. The majority of the badgers killed will be healthy, with no testing being carried out on the bodies, and we will never know the true number of infected animals. The cull has become highly controversial however, as the majority of wildlife scientists, vets and nature experts, including Sir David Attenborough, argue that it will not work because it misunderstands badger behaviour and how bovine TB is spreading. An alliance has formed to oppose the shootings. For more information about the objections, facts and science see www.badgergate.org 18

New Musical Director, New Era The Burnham and Highbridge Choral Society are delighted to announce the appointment of their new Musical Director Nicholas Bromilow. We believe that his appointment signals the start of a new and exciting era for the Choral Society. Although Nick is new to the Society, he has had experience conducting various orchestras and groups. Nick also received a choral Scholarship from Sherborne Abbey, and has a B.A in Music. The Society is looking forward to the challenge and new opportunities that he will bring and feel sure that together, both Nick and the choir will continue to develop and grow, whilst continuing to perform quality concerts. This would be an ideal time to join this friendly and relaxed Choral Society; why not come on this adventure with us? We will be starting back on Thursday 5th September at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church Hall, College Street, Burnham-on-Sea. There are no auditions, and although reading music is an advantage, it’s not necessary. The first three weeks are FREE, so why not come along? For more information you can phone Mr Bev Hearn on 01934 732041, visit our Facebook page or email our Secretary at jane.lee36@btinternet.com

Choral Society Climbs to New Heights On Sunday 7th July a contingent from the Burnham and Highbridge Choral Society joined together with some of the Weston-super-Mare Choral Society and went to the Albert Hall to be part of The Really Big Chorus and sing Verdi's Requiem. It was a very exciting day, although quite hot. The ladies had been positioned high up in the East and West Choir stalls which are to each side of the organ; the gents fared better a little lower down. Brian Kay was conducting and, as usual, it was a superb day. There were close to 2000 singers for this performance. The English Festival Orchestra were in support and the soloists were superb.

Appeal for Poppy Collectors Remembrance Day and the Two Minute Silence have been observed since the end of the First World War, but their relevance remains undiminished. When we bow our heads in reflection, we remember those who fought for our freedom during the two World Wars. But we also mourn and honor those who have lost their lives in more recent conflicts. Today, with troops on duty in Afghanistan and other trouble spots around the world, Remembrance, and this two minute tribute are as important as ever. Each year the nation expresses its unequivocal support for The Royal British Legion's work through the Poppy Appeal. The poppy is the symbol of Remembrance. Poppy collectors appear in late October so everyone can make a donation and wear their poppy for Remembrance, but unless we can recruit a group of volunteers, the Poppy Appeal is unlikely to go ahead in the Burnham, Highbridge, Berrow and Brean area. This would be such a shame. If you would like to get involved and can give your time please telephone Sue Meads on 01278 792021.

Community Cohesion Whilst the July competition in the town celebrating the Independent Trader will look forward to the presentation of a book of vouchers (valued at £470) to the one winner pulled out of the hat, in August, the Town Team continues to assist community groups with events and website listings. This is all about Community Cohesion, which means we are here for you as we hope you are there for the Town. Your meetings need to be publicised so that new members can be attracted to you, your events need to be published so that the public can attend; it's all about communication. The Town Team meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at The Care Centre, College Court, College Street at 7pm, with every Tuesday afternoon at the same venue used between 2pm and 4 pm as a ‘drop in and chat to us’ centre. To get involved assisting at events or volunteering your services please contact us urgently; there is still much going on and much to do, not just for the summer but all year round. Advice from Sedgemoor Citizens’ Advice Bureau This is the latest of a series of articles in which an experienced adviser from Sedgemoor Citizens’ Advice Bureau offers readers guidance on matters that are of concern.

BUYING OVER THE INTERNET Many people buy goods and services over the internet, but are not always clear about their legal rights. Essentially, when you buy goods over the internet from a UK based company, you have the same rights as if you had bought them from a shop. This means that: • The goods must match their description and conform to any advertising claims made about them. • The goods must be of satisfactory quality. In other words, they must meet the standard that a reasonable person would expect. • The goods must be fit for purpose, which includes what you would normally expect from the goods in question and anything you have specifically pointed out to the seller. • If the seller is a business (rather than a private individual) and sells goods that are unsafe or fail to a material degree to match their description or price, a criminal offence may have been committed. There are some additional rights associated with internet purchases. These include: • Clear information before you buy, including the name of the seller and the price of the goods. If you pay money before the goods are delivered, the seller must also give you his or her full postal address. • The right to cancel your order and get your money back any time up to seven working days after you have received the goods. You might, however, have to pay to return the goods. Note that you cannot cancel if the goods were made to order or were perishable or were newspapers. Nor can you return audio or video recordings that have been unsealed. • The goods should be delivered within thirty days, unless you and the seller agree otherwise. These rights do not apply when you buy: financial services; timeshare arrangements; food and drink from a delivery service; goods at an on-line auction; services such as accommodation, catering or leisure services that are ordered for a specific date or period. If you pay by credit card for a single item worth between £100 and £30,000, the credit card company may have equal liability with the seller, even if the credit card company is not based in the UK. If you buy from an overseas company, your rights will depend on the law in the country where the firm is based. Within the European Union, your rights will be similar to those in the UK.

Here are some of the ways in which you can deal with any problems that arise: • If the goods aren’t delivered within thirty days, or by the agreed date, you have the right either to cancel and get your money back or to ask for a replacement. • If the goods are damaged or are substantially different from their description, you are entitled to ask for a full refund, including the cost of all postage and packaging. • If the goods are faulty and you return them promptly, you don’t have to agree to a replacement or repair. • You may be entitled to compensation if the goods don’t match their description, or are of unsatisfactory quality or are not fit for purpose. Such shortcomings could amount to breach of contract. • If there is a problem, stop using the goods, find proof of purchase, contact the seller (and, if applicable, the credit card company) in writing, enclosing a copy of the proof of purchase. Explain the problem and state what you want, for example, a full refund, a repair, a replacement or compensation. Keep a copy of your letter and send the original by recorded delivery. Make a note of the details of any telephone conversations you have with the company, including the date and time of all calls and the name of the person to whom you have spoken. • If you are unable to gain satisfactory redress, your ultimate option is to take court action, but you should always seek advice before contemplating this step. • If an advert proves misleading, indecent or dishonest, you can contact the Advertising Standards Authority (020 7492 2222). • Help is always available from the Citizens’ Advice Consumer Helpline (0845 404 0506). Further, detailed advice is available by visiting one of Sedgemoor CAB’s drop-in sessions at: • Burnham-on-Sea Methodist Church, College St., Burnham-on-Sea. (Tuesdays, 9.30am-12.30pm). • Hope Baptist Church, Church St., Highbridge. (Thursdays, 9.30am-12.30pm). • The Lions, West Quay, Bridgwater. (Monday-Friday 10am-1pm; Saturdays 10am-12pm). • Cheddar Baptist Church, Lower North St., Cheddar. (Mondays, 9.30am-12.30pm). The CAB offers advice that is free, independent, confidential and impartial.

August Work in the Garden The Flower Garden Keep taking dead flower heads off your flowers to prolong flowering. Clematis, honeysuckle and wisteria should be trained before the shoots become too long. To get bigger and better blooms from your dahlias, take some of the small buds off from the side of the main flower buds. All flowers will require ample water and doses of liquid manure.

Vegetables As the first crops are harvested, the plots can be filled with winter greens. Continue to pinch out side shoots from tomatoes. Thin the lower leaves and remove any leaves that are turning yellow. Keep your plot clean. The best place for most soft green weeds is under the soil, where they will decay and form plant food. Asparagus beds must be kept clear of weeds and the seed bearing heads should be cut off.

For more tips, why not join your local gardening group? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meets at 7.30pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. On Monday 15 July, Jacqui Strong will be talking about the History and Design of Marine Cove - all welcome. Members of the Society free, visitors £1.

A new radio station for Once upon a time in Burnham – Shipping It was only during the 20th Century that over 200 years of commercial shipping came to an end in Burnham. This is not to say that Burnham would ever have rivalled Southampton or Liverpool, but it was an important port of call for international traders back in Roman times because its long, gently sloping sands made it easy to beach a vessel for loading and off-loading - a practice that was regularly employed by the Hodges family, who had been coal and salt merchants since the middle of the 19th Century, with their place of business being Wharf Cottage off the Berrow Road behind Ellen’s Cottages, until they ceased trading in the first decade of the 20th Century. For most if not all of this time, it was the practice to lay a narrow-gauge sectional tramway

24

between the dunes and out onto the beach for their vessels to be unloaded into, before being hauled back to the coal yard. Around 1860, all sorts of things were afoot in Burnham with the incorporation of the Burnham Tidal Harbour and Railway Company which proposed the construction of a deep water harbour at Pillsmouth. However, this never materialised and the company settled for the establishment of Highbridge Wharf. The railway was extended from Highbridge to Burnham, the jetty was constructed and regularly cross (Bristol) channel ferry service was established. By this time, with the merging of the Somerset Central railway and its Dorset counterpart into the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway Company, it became possible for an adventurous Welshman to board the ferry in Cardiff, change to the train at Burnham and then board a ferry at one of the south coast ports for France and the rest of Europe – how many intrepid travellers took advantage of this opportunity is alas not known. Because it is a seaside town with a pleasure beach, one tends to think in terms of the holiday passenger traffic, which it became increasingly towards the end; but this was not always so. The business started as a cross channel ferry service between Somerset and South Wales that was much used by local traders, especially those of the farming community, to go to the Welsh markets, particularly Cardiff, where they sold their cattle and produce. One product from this area that sold well in Wales was Caerphilly cheese - presumably they could eat it faster than they could make it. The opening of the Severn Tunnel dealt a major blow to the regular ferry trade, and the service as such was discontinued, although an unsuccessful attempt was made to revive it some years later. After that, apart from Guy Hodges’ coal boats which had ceased by 1910, the only commercial shipping to visit Burnham were the paddle steamers that carried passengers on pleasure trips between the Bristol Channel ports – but more of them another time. Thanks to Bob Thomas, local author and historian for supplying this month’s history piece.

Chalice Morris Men Chalice Morris Men will be making a return visit to the Marine Cove Gardens on Thursday 15th August. The club were very impressed with the response last year and so have added the gardens as a regular spot for their Thursday night displays. The club will be appearing at 7.45pm for the first show of the evening before moving on to the seafront where they will dance opposite the Royal Clarence at about 8.45pm. Chalice is one of the longest established Morris teams in the area, having celebrated their 40th (ish) birthday last year. They dance the traditional Cotswold Morris though in their own distinct style. If you cannot make it on the 15th, you can see them on Saturday the 17th on the sea front by the jetty, as they spend the day dancing in aid of MacMillan Nurses. Times for the display will follow in the local media or watch out for the posters. Why not join the Tradition in 2013? Based just outside Burnham in Brent Knoll, Chalice Morris Men have been enjoying good beer, great dancing, and the finest company since 1972. Our Squire, Adam Busby, is possibly one of the youngest Morris Squires in the Country. Our side has been growing strongly, and with both young and older dancers joining us, we have a great future as one of Somerset's leading Morris sides. We also have a great team of traditional musicians who play for our dances, and are always looking out for more. Explore our website to learn more about the Chalice Morris Men, or join us and learn how to Morris Dance!
