From the editor Hello, and welcome to the May issue of LocalReach Bridgwater. I can’t believe we’re already on our fourth issue of the magazine, and thank you to everyone who helps to contribute to it – the advertisers and many local clubs, societies and charities who tell me what’s going on throughout our area.

I visited the Museum of Somerset in Taunton for the first time last month with my two boys and husband, and it was a really enjoyable few hours out, with lots of exhibits and activities. There is some information in this magazine about some of their forthcoming events, and don’t forget that Bridgwater Museum is now also open for a visit – plenty to see and do right on our doorstep!

If you’re thinking about embarking on a fitness regime ready for the summer, then be sure to read Hannah Chaudhri’s article on fitness activities, and find that inner child within you!

Again, there’s plenty going on in the Bridgwater area, and I hope by telling you all about them in this magazine, that you find the information useful and are also able to support our community groups and local charities.

Queen of Hearts

This group is for people affected by cancer, offering support, friendship and a listening ear. They do not give advice, but signpost people to appropriate sources of help. They share experiences – helping to reduce the feeling of isolation. There is a lot of laughter over a coffee and piece of cake at their meetings at Bridgwater Arts Centre, every Friday, 10.30am – 12.30pm. New Skatepark?

Sedgemoor District Council has registered a planning application for a new skatepark.

It is proposed to be located on the site of the YMCA on Friarn Avenue in Bridgwater.

The drawings contained within the planning application are indicative and are not the final designs chosen. A tender process, managed by the YMCA, is being completed to select a final design.

Interested parties can view and comment on this application via www.sedgemoor.gov. uk/planning or in writing to Sedgemoor District Council, remembering to quote case number 08/13/00065.

Sedgemoor District Council’s Community Development team have been working with the YMCA, and a user-group made up of skaters, scooter users and BMX’ers, to ensure the finalised design and concept for the skatepark is both value for money and fit for purpose.

Sedgemoor District Council and the YMCA will release further information on the chosen design in due course.

Sedgemoor Health Walks These walks are ideal for those recovering from illness or injury, the inactive or those who wish to improve their physical or mental health. The walks are 1 - 5 miles in length and last approximately 1 - 2 hours.

To join in, just meet at the designated meeting point for a 10am departure, bring a drink of water and wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Walks during May include Fiddington and Pawlett, and June’s walks 4

Swim Fit A one-off grant from Sedgemoor District Council’s Community Health Fund has meant that Swimfit Activate+ group sessions are now available to swimmers at Trinity Sports and Leisure in Bridgwater.

Swimfit Activate+ has been developed by swimming experts at the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA), and is a revolutionary swimming programme suitable for all swimming abilities. It is designed to help people get more out of their time in the pool. Sedgemoor residents will be some of the first people in the country to experience these new inspiring sessions thanks to Sedgemoor District Council’s support.

Lianne Clarke, Health Promotion Officer from Sedgemoor District Council said: “Sedgemoor District Council is very proud to have been

awarded this project funding of £1800.

Swimmers will reap the benefits of these sessions and see real improvements in their sense of physical health and wellbeing. Group sessions are also a great way to meet friends and socialise which in turn improves people’s sense of mental health. The Community Health Fund was designed to improve Sedgemoor residents’ health; this project is doing just that and we hope it is very successful”.

Inspired by the structure of a gym programme, Swimfit is a fun and effective way to get fit and tone up by following 30 progressive motivating session cards either in an instructor-led session or during your normal swim.

Chiltern Pool Update The pool has a new timetable, which will be in effect until 23 July, with a new 60+ session, four disabled sessions per week, and due to popular demand a further Aquafit session. A learner/training pool timetable has also been introduced.

Museum of Somerset

Tickets are now on sale for Bridgwater Choral Society’s performance of Bach: Mass in B Minor. The conductor is Iain Cooper.

Silver Medal Winners

(Honours) Degree in Landscape Design were joined by three Level 3 Horticulture students for the competition.

Competing against six of the UK’s leading horticultural colleges, they worked to a brief compiled by TV gardener, David Domoney, co-presenter of Love Your Garden, in collaboration with the Prince’s Trust for the Built Environment. The students, who are all based at the College’s Cannington Centre, produced and developed a design for the competition and managed the funding, materials, pre-build and installation of the garden, which took six days to complete. The finished product, constructed mainly of timber, included a pergola seating area, a water feature and planted, raised beds with under-lighting to create an effective display.

A team of eight judges, headed by TV’s Alan Titchmarsh, awarded the garden a silver gilt medal, placing it third overall. The students were presented with their certificate and medal by Alan Titchmarsh and David Domoney.

Iain Truman, Programme Manager for Horticulture and Landscape Design at Bridgwater College said: “The whole experience of building a show garden at one of Europe’s largest exhibitions is amazing for the students. A great amount of real-life learning takes place at these events - not only are the students building gardens for real, but also to a very high standard with a very tight deadline. The students have all done themselves, the College and their tutors proud; the finished garden was almost faultless and deserved the recognition it received from the judges, and continues to receive from the visitors to the show.”

The Walled Gardens of Cannington

Located in the village of Cannington, the Walled Gardens lie within the grounds of a medieval priory and many of its fine buildings, including the walls of the garden, remain.

Having undergone extensive redevelopment, the gardens were officially opened by HRH the Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward in 2009 and have also been accredited as a ‘quality assured visitor attraction' by VisitEngland. They are also a Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommended garden and

provide a superb facility for students at Bridgwater College Cannington Centre.

The gardens have classic and contemporary features such as; the 'hot' herbaceous border; the blue garden; a sub-tropical walk; and a Victorian style fernery, amongst others. There is also a botanical glasshouse where arid, sub-tropical and tropical plants can be seen and two smaller gardens within the walls (The Bishop's and Australasian Gardens) are areas of real tranquillity.

The Walled Gardens holds a variety of events throughout the year and provides a beautiful setting for the weekend fairs, outdoor performances and exhibitions. Visit during May when the gardens will be filled with music, stalls and entertainment for the Spring

Fair (11 – 12 May), take a walk on the wild side in June for the Wildlife Weekend (1 – 2 June) or lose yourself in the world of Shakespeare with the wonderful performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (21 – 22 June) performed by the Bridgwater College’s Drama Academy. Cost Clipping If your home is like mine, you live in an unspoken cloud of inanimate reproach from all the tools, gadgets and electronics that squat spurned and lifeless in corners and cupboards.

“Use me!”, they silently cry as we pass by; “switch me on!”, they implore as we ignore that drawer; and, worst of all, they moan and mutter in the clutter: “If only you had not lost that small bit, you could make me work once more.”

Between the ease of purchase, the pressure of advertising and the self-deception that a new and costly thingamajig will transform our lives, save us time and make us better looking, we all have a lot of stuff.

It may be apocryphal, but some insist that the average power drill is used for a mere few minutes during its entire lifetime before being thrown out, for recycling at best, and costly, polluting, wasteful landfill at worst.

But what is the alternative to a consumerist life of clutter and waste? Actually, there are plenty of easy options when it comes to the things that we need intermittently at best, and Somerset’s Green Routine waste prevention campaign has collated a quick guide to those available in the county.

Under the theme for May of ‘make money, save money, cut waste’, it sets out the simple question for everyone in Bridgwater: ‘Why buy when you can hire, borrow or share?’

Ignoring the Shakespearean ‘neither a borrower nor lender be’, the starting point could be checking with neighbours and friends before setting out to buy that bit of kit for kitchen, car or garden. They may well be happy that you borrow something that they rarely use, especially if you have something to lend in return.

And the campaign offers simple tools to help you identify what you have that could bring in cash and so earn their place and space among your stuff.

Of course, a quick check online or in the phone book can track down hire shops and DIY or garden stores where much of what you need could be rented for far less than the purchase price.

And Bridgwater has a fantastic, free or low-cost and always highly-efficient service that supplies all manner of media: its library. As well as browsing the shelves, you can even go online to search and order from many thousands of the library books held in stock – just like shopping, but so much cheaper, and no waste.

Summer Fit The clocks have gone back, and we officially find ourselves in the season that promises some warmer days, which for most of us also means the pressure has risen and it will soon be shorts and bikini time!

Life Music Festival Life Festival will return to Taunton Academy on Saturday 22 June. The festival, which is now in its second year, looks set to be bigger and better for 2013!

The range of acts promises something to suit all music tastes and there will be family entertainment including a bouncy castle and various stalls.

The headline act will be Andy Abraham from X Factor; he will be supported by Jamie

Lawson who recently enjoyed a number one hit in Ireland.

One of the stars from the 2012 event, Hattie Keane, will return by popular demand. Local blues band, Got Legs will also perform alongside tribute bands including Antarctic Monkeys and Oasis Forever.

Local schools are being invited to take to the stage to make this a true community partnership. Tickets are priced at £6 for an adult, £4 for children and £15 for a family

ticket (2 adults and 2 children; or 1 adult and 3 children).

Fundraise for Renegades!

This is a Time Bank based at Sunny Side Up - a not for profit organisation that operates a FREE help service. It is free to join and all they ask in return is for you to become a member to receive and offer free help, such as giving another member a lift to an appointment, or a more difficult task such as decorating. You can use the Time Bank as little or as often you would like. There is no money exchanged, the only exchange is Time Credits; one hour of work equals one Time Credit, which is deposited or withdrawn from your Time Bank ‘account’.

Here is an example on how Time Bank works: A member who wants help to decorate a room, contacts the Time Bank. They look through the membership of who can offer and be best matched to carry out the service. Both members (the provider and recipient) are introduced to one another, a contract is drawn up for both members to agree to, based on what the task is and what is expected from both members. Before any task can begin, a risk assessment has to be done at the recipient's home. All the recipient has to do, is to provide the materials and tools for the decorating such as paint and the brushes etc. After the task has been completed, both members will have their accounts debited and credited. Music Exhibition Students from Bridgwater College studying the Foundation Degree in Creative Audio Technology and BTEC Extended Diploma Music Technology, will be presenting an exhibition of their work on Tuesday 21 May at 7pm in the Arts and Technology Foyer at Bridgwater College.

This multimedia sound installation showcases the second year project work from both courses. It will feature a wide range of electronic composition, ranging from live DJs and performance art, through to music for video and film. Fancy a Paddle?

Enjoy a leisurely evening paddle along the historic Bridgwater to Taunton canal! Bridgwater YMCA is starting paddling sessions on a Monday, 6pm – 7.30pm from Monday 13 May. The sheltered, shallow waters and using open Canadian canoes, makes this an activity that requires no previous experience of water sports and the flexible nature of the activity makes it accessible to all activity levels. All paddling and safety equipment will be provided and you will be accompanied by two British Canoe Union coaches and lifeguards. It costs £5 per person per session or £40 upfront for ten weeks. This is an adult program, but discussion can take place regarding accompanied children and dogs! Exercise at YMCA

The Opening of the Museum On the opening day of the museum in April, a table was dedicated by the Mayor of Bridgwater, Councillor Graham Granter, in memory of Bryan Gillard, past Chairman of the Friends of Blake Museum and previous Councillor, who spent a lot of time at the museum.

The museum has a newly refurbished Archaeology room with many more exhibits on display for the first time, and a new display of textiles and costume. The costume display will only be for six months, so go along and view them before the costumes are put back in storage.

I’ve been running local Music classes for babies, toddlers & preschool children for 9 years.

Jolly Babies classes are baby’s first singing and musical experience from birth to 14 months.

Classes are small and carefully structured to stimulate your baby’s senses, using singing, movement, small percussion instruments and props. It’s a chance to get away from it all and enjoy quality time with your baby.

Music with Mummy classes from 14 months to 3 years aim to teach basic aspects of music whilst having fun.

Classes are small, which builds children’s confidence and familiarity. We encourage language, listening, movement, rhythm using fun topics, musical games, props & percussion instruments.

Three Four Time classes are for children from 3 years upwards. Each half term has a different story eg. Elves & Shoemaker. The main aim is to teach the children basic musical terms e.g. Lento & Presto . Children act out parts of a story using their imagination, encouraging sharing, building confidence, using language, listening skills and preparing the children for the next step, school.
