Welcome to LocalReach Community Magazine... Welcome to the March edition of LocalReach. And what a packed edition we have for you this month. New articles from recent events are included in this month’s edition along with driving advice from our local Institute of Advanced Motoring for the month ahead. There are lots of events being organised during March and into April and I hope you will be able to attend some of these. The Highbridge Festival of the Arts is probably the largest event during March and gives the chance for people in our community to showcase their talents and abilities through the Arts. Many of our local groups were successful as part of SPARKS Dragon’s Den style fundraising evening which was an enjoyable event and hope it can be replicated in the future - congratulations to all groups who were successful and braved the stage to shout about their projects. Coffee Morning Saturday 3rd March - The next Friends of the Community Centre coffee morning will be held on Saturday 3rd March at 9.45am – 11.45am at the Community Centre, Berrow Road (near the swimming pool), Burnham-on-Sea. There will be all the usual items, nearly-new clothes, books, jigsaws, bric-a-brac, jewellery, handmade cards, raffle and refreshments (including homemade cakes). Please come along for a browse and support this monthly event. No admission charge.

‘Messy Church’ Burnham-on-Sea Methodist Church Saturday 3rd March - We hold a Messy Church on the first Saturday of each month. It’s an occasion for the whole family. It includes activities, crafts, quizzes, etc. for all ages, and a light tea to finish with. Entry is free. Our next event is on Saturday 3rd March at 4pm. Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s Brass Quintet Friday 9th March – We are very fortunate to have been able to engage the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra`s Brass Quintet to play in Mark Parish Church on Friday 9th March at 7.30pm. This is a Somerset ‘Take Art’ project supported on this occasion by both Mark Parish Church and Mark Village Hall & Community Association.

Celebrating Women Thursday 8th March: An evening of poetry for International Women’s Day, 7.30pm – 9pm at Cordis Mundi (house name), Bovetown, Glastonbury BA6 8JG. Plus a launch of the #MeToo Anthology. All profits go to Women’s Aid UK. Ama Bolton, Rachel Buchanon, Rachael Clyne and Deborah Harvey will read their own and other poems from the book. #MeToo arose from a recent wave of women sharing experiences of sexual harassment, on social media. Poet Deborah Alma has gathered work from some of our finest women poets into a powerful anthology. Local poets Rosie Jackson, Dawn Gorman, Morag Kiziewicz, Michelle O Donell, Jinny Fisher and Sara Butler will offer readings in celebration of women, and musician Julie Patchouli will grace us with song. Drinks and copies of the book are available for purchase. We hope to raise the roof and a donation for Women’s Aid. West Mendip Orchestra Friday 16th March – The West Mendip Orchestra are delighted to announce our Spring Concert on Friday 16th March at Christchurch, Chapel Hill Clevedon starting at 7.45 pm. We shall be playing an attractive programme of music by English composers, starting with the Overture to The Gondoliers by Sullivan and ending with Walton’s dramatic Spitfire prelude and fugue. The concert also includes music by Butterworth, Holst, Arnold and Coates as well as Delius’s evergreen A walk to the Paradise Garden and Nimrod from the Enigma variations by Elgar.

Somerset Choral Society ‘Come & Sing Messiah’

Spring has arrived! At The Walled Gardens of Cannington, the arrival of spring is marked by a flurry of events and longer opening hours. With 12,000 bulbs planted at the Gardens every year, many of them will be unveiling themselves this March, as we head into the season of Mothering Sunday, Lambing Fun Day and Easter celebrations. The Gardens are open daily and are a lovely place to spend some quality time. On Mothering Sunday on 11 March, all mothers visiting will receive a special gift (whilst stocks last), and free entry with an accompanied paying adult. On Sunday 18 March, entry to the Gardens is free (this day only) if you have a valid ticket for Lambing Fun Day, also taking place on this date at Bridgwater & Taunton College’s Rodway Farm in Cannington. If you’re in the village, why not pay the Gardens a visit on the same day, and witness them blooming into the springtime season. Saturday 24th March – Somerset Choral Society and our Musical Director Ed Goater invite you to a ‘Come & Sing Messiah’ as a choral workshop and performance on Saturday 24th March in St. Mary’s Church, Wedmore from 10.30am to 4.30pm approx. with registration commencing at 10am. The workshop will consist of selected choruses including the ‘Hallelujah Chorus’ with rehearsals followed by a short performance. Rotary Young Chef District Competition Eight talented young chefs from across the District gathered at King Alfred’s school, Highbridge to compete in the annual Rotary Young Chef District competition. Burnham-on-Sea was represented by Izaak Strong who had won the local heat. Competitors came from all across the area, from Wells, Yeovil, Crewkerne and Devizes. Each of the entrants had to produce a three-course healthy and balanced meal for two people in two hours using a maximum budget of £15. Head judge Kevin Smokcum, who has been judging the Rotary competition for the past 12 years, commented that the standard this year was “superb.” Phil Parker, the Rotary District Organiser agreed with Kevin’s view adding: “The quality of entries this year was really excellent, it gets better every year.” The winners were Olivia Lovell representing The Rotary Club of Dorchester Casterbridge, Eloisa Lloyd representing Yeovil, and Eleanor Penny from the Rotary Club of Crewkerne. All three go forward to the Regional Finals on the 17th March at Bridgwater & Taunton College. Rotary would like to thank the Head and Governors of King Alfred School who once again provided the venue, and the ladies of Burnham Inner Wheel who provided refreshments and lunch for all the families and supporters.

Tracing the story of Barnabas, a largely overlooked character who contributed so much to the life of the early church, the evening will call you to live the everyday life in a beautiful way. Automatic light settings will not always activate in bad weather conditions, so it is up to you to make a sensible decision as to whether these need to be turned on. Aquaplaning:

Heavy rain: •Heavy rain will affect your visibility, so take it slow. Rule 126 of the Highway Code states that the braking distance between yourself and the vehicle in front of you should be two seconds when driving on a dry road, and at least four seconds in the wet. •If the water is standing in puddles on the road surface, your car is at risk of aquaplaning. Aquaplaning is where a wedge of water forms in front of the tyre and lifts it up off the road surface. This is caused by the tread not being able to displace the amount of water present. If your steering becomes very light you could very well be aquaplaning. To recover from aquaplaning, ease gently off your accelerator, have a firm grip of the steering wheel and be sure not to make any sudden steering actions. The car will eventually regain its grip as the water clears.

Two Local Groups First to Benefit from Hinkley Point C Small Grants Programme Following the first Hinkley Point C Community Fund Small Grants Programme panel meeting in January, two local groups are the first to have been awarded grants from the programme, which is administered by Somerset Community Foundation. Grants have been awarded to Middlezoy Arts and Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge Men’s Shed (BOSHed), which together total nearly £10,000. To apply for the funding, charities, voluntary groups or social enterprises that normally operate on less than £100,000 a year must show that the projects they are seeking to support will help to mitigate the impacts and take advantage of the opportunities of the Hinkley Point C project. The Middlezoy Arts project focuses on connecting with the arts through the surrounding environment. The additional space will allow for more new members, as well as a weekly session for women ‘shedders’. Volunteering Ever considered volunteering but not sure what to do, or concerned that the commitment might be too much? Well I might have the answer! I work with a great group of volunteers (working with Contact the Elderly) from the East Huntspill, Bason Bridge, Mark and Burnham-on-Sea area who provide afternoon tea on one Sunday per month for two groups of older (over 75) isolated people, and we have a waiting list. If we are to start a third group I need to find the following volunteers and it would be great to go into 2018 with an additional group supporting even more older isolated people in the area. The roles: Hosts - once or twice a year you would host a group of up to eight older people and four drivers, providing afternoon tea, homemade or shop bought, and good conversation. You will need to have enough chairs either at a table and/or in the living room, in one or more rooms, and a downstairs toilet (many of our guests struggle with stairs). Drivers - once a month or every other, depending on what you can commit to, you would transport approx. two guests to the events, enjoy a cuppa and good conversation. You would need to be DBS checked as you will be working with vulnerable adults, but we take care of that. And, of course, you need a road worthy car, that is taxed and insured. Every Tuesday, 9.30am - The annual festivities are over and we welcome 2018 into our lives after indulging ourselves with treat after treat! Perhaps it’s time to start appreciating our bodies and treating it to the numerous health benefits of swimming. The Penguin Swimming Club is there for the over 60s, meeting weekly at the Sports & Swimming Academy Pool, Berrow Road, Burnham-on-Sea (next to the Community Centre). Our members consist of ladies and gents of all abilities, confident swimmers, less confident swimmers and non-swimmers. They have exclusive use of the pool between 9.30am and 10.25am every Tuesday. To avoid overcrowding, our membership is limited and we maintain a waiting list for potential new members. However, at present we have a small number of spaces available. If you would like more information, why not come along on a Tuesday morning between 9.15am and 10am and meet a member of our committee who will be happy to discuss membership with you. Unfortunately, we find that this equipment does often not allow the speeds that your line could achieve and a wireless signal with far less range than the television adverts would suggest. Another issue that we find very frequently is that most routers over the age of three years old, often do not run at the speeds of their modern equivalent. Sometimes this is due to the technology within the router and other times we find that equipment is degraded due to heat and power fluctuations.

Somerset Time For Youth

Every Friday - This is a drop-in IT clinic held at the Bay Centre, Cassis Close – every Friday. We are open on a Friday and aim to help our clients solve IT problems and offer them a social meeting place where we can help and support in a relaxed atmosphere. We can support and help with most problems – Windows, Apple, tablets and smart phones. We are open from 10.30am to 12.30pm and again from 1pm to 3pm. We have our own laptops that people can use if they need and there is always a refreshment break with tea, coffee and biscuits. We charge a nominal fee of £2 per session. Somerset Time For Youth is a club for children and young adults aged 0-25 years of age, with special/additional needs, with or without a diagnosis. Club sessions are from 10.30am - 1pm every Saturday morning alternating between Balliol Hall in West Huntspill and Morland Community Hall in Highbridge. We offer a safe and supported environment for our members and their families to participate in recreational activities and socialise. There are tuck shops where you can purchase light refreshments. Weekend Walks - Sedgemoor Ramblers Our new programme is now published online, with walks from December through to March. The Valuation: What to expect If you have decided to sell your home, and have arranged for a few estate agents to come around to value the property, what can you expect from these appointments? What type of preparation should you make? Firstly, try to set aside about an hour for a valuation appointment. “Your home is likely to be your biggest asset so it’s worth investing the time to discover its value,” says Andrew Stoppani of Westcoast Properties in Burnham-on-Sea. “Whilst the agent will appreciate some time to explore alone, it’s best if you’re available to answer any questions, rather than making dinner at the same time or trying to get the kids out of the house to school.” Does the house have to be immaculate at this stage? “As agents we have the capacity to look beyond a bit of clutter,” says Andrew. “We can see potential in a way that many buyers can’t, and the valuation is an ideal opportunity to ask what needs to be done to achieve the best price. For example, will putting in a new bathroom bring a worthwhile return?” Whilst the agent may take some measurements to gauge room size, photographs would not be taken at this stage so if your home isn’t pristine don’t worry - the agent will understand it’s a work in progress. It’s important for you to ask questions during and after the valuation. Ask the agent whether they have sold any properties like yours recently, what their marketing strategy involves, and what their fee includes. Do they give the impression of having the correct knowledge and expertise? “Make sure you continue to question them once they have given a valuation,” Andrew advises. “It is crucial that they are able to evidence how and why they have arrived at this figure. Remember that you’ll be working in collaboration with your estate agent during the weeks ahead so trust and cooperation between all parties is imperative. Choose the estate agent who you believe will sell your home within a timescale and at a price that works for you.”

Reminder for dog walkers in Burnham-on-Sea Sedgemoor District Council are reminding all dog walkers that there is a year-round dog ban on Burnhamon-Sea beach between the jetty and the Pavilion. Over the past year, 24 fixed penalty notices have been issued in this area. It is an offence to take a dog onto this part of the beach at any time and the fine is £75. There is clear signage in place to show the banned area. Dogs are allowed between the Jetty and the Yacht Club and from the Pavilion to Maddocks Slade between September to the end of April each year.
