Welcome to LocalReach! Welcome to the February edition of LocalReach. With Valentine’s Day this month, then maybe taking up a new hobby and joining the Burnham Evening Flower Group will generate some ideas for the big day! The Highbridge Festival of the Arts is next month, so be sure to make a note in your diaries from this month’s edition. There are plenty of groups encouraging you to get active, with either joining the Sedgemoor Ramblers or Penguin Swimming Group – alternatively why not help Berrow Conservation Group by getting outdoors and assisting with the dune clearance towards the end of the month. We are keen to hear from any groups who would like to have a piece written and documented by inviting me along to your events – please get in touch. Quiz Night, Friends of Burnham Hospital

Scout Group Prize Bingo Evening

Friday 9th February

Saturday 10th February

Join us for a Quiz Night at the Ritz on Friday 9th February and our grand Party Night entitled ‘Starry, Starry Nite’ with the ever popular ‘Lipinski Band’ at the Oaktree on Saturday 24th March. Don’t miss out on this event, contact Bernie on 01278 785727 to reserve tickets.

Join us at the Burnham Scout Group hut at BASC ground Burnham-on-Sea on Saturday 10th February at 6.30pm for 7pm start. All proceeds will go towards the Scout Group.

2017 was a successful year with so many events organised. Highlights included our garden party at the hospital, quiz nights at the Ritz, party night and music night at the Oaktree, as well as our Christmas music concert. We also purchased many items during 2017, the slit lamp and the scoop stretcher being the latest additions. Over the year we had help from other organisations. We had an offer to work with the Hornby Exhibition Group resulting in us receiving a donation from them, The Masons in Burnham arranged for the War Memorial to be upgraded for us. However, the biggest surprise came from Burnham & Berrow Golf Club, Captains - Peter Amos and Jane Moreton nominated the Friends to be their major charity for 2017. Throughout the year they ran many fundraising events including a full day charity tournament in the summer which ‘The Friends’ were invited to (we sold items to raise additional funds for the hospital). Another initiative was to place our collection buckets in various bunkers on the golf course and anyone landing in the bunker had to put a £1 in! There were also raffles and a silent auction. Peter and Jane presented a cheque for £9600, a truly outstanding amount of money for the Friends to use on projects within the hospital. We were amazed at the generosity of the people and golf members within the club who have donated and for all the hard work that was put in by Peter and Jane on our behalf. If you would like to support the ‘Friends of Burnham Hospital’ or become a member, then you can contact Bernard on 01278 785727 or 07856 213289.

The group can offer friendship, advice, information and social activity. At our next meeting on February 12th, Lisa Dollery will be talking to us about her seated Pilates class, demonstrating how easy and beneficial this type of exercise can be. Some of our members already attend and can recommend it. If you enjoy singing, then our sea-shanty group is for you - we need more voices! Don’t worry if you are not a great singer, just be prepared to have fun! The sessions are on alternate Tuesdays. Contact Carole for more info on 782428. Hope to see members old and new at our next meeting. If you are thinking of coming along for the first time, please feel free to get in touch first on any of the contact numbers: Christine Manners 783696; Malcolm Conyers 01934 740282; Kim Lewis 787022.

February Flower Frenzy Tuesday 13th February The club ended 2017 on a high with a wonderful demonstration by the talented international demonstrator, broadcaster and TV judge, Jonathan Moseley at The Princess Theatre. We had a nearly full house and it is believed everyone that attended really enjoyed it; the floral displays were ‘out of this world’ and a few people were lucky to go home with them as raffle prizes. 2018 brings changes to the Club; we are moving to the Catholic Church Hall on the second Tuesday of the month. This venue has ample parking at the rear of the building which should make things easier for everyone, so you have no reason not to come! Our first demonstration for this year is on 13th February when Ashley Stockton from Taunton will delight us with his flowers and chat depicting ‘February Frenzy’. The demonstration commences at 7.30pm but arrive a bit earlier to enjoy a complimentary tea/coffee and a biscuit beforehand. New members will be most welcome; the fee for the year is £37, visitors are welcome for a £6.50 charge, and the flowers are raffled at the end of the evening. If you come as a visitor and decide to become a member, your visitor fees will be refunded. It is hoped you will come and join us, as it’s a very pleasurable and informative evening at the Burnham Evening Flower Group.

Diamonds a cut above the rest Clevedon Salerooms Jewellery Specialist John Kelly, Fellow of the Gemmological Association has been appraising fine jewellery and silver for more than three decades. With the demand for diamond jewellery at an all time high, fuelled by the expansion of a class of wealthy consumers from the East, now is a very good time to have a rummage in that jewellery box or safe and perhaps consider realising the value of that unworn jewellery. While diamonds are valued on the Four C’s: Cut, Clarity, Colour and Carat, it can be argued that there exists a fifth ‘C’ that can dramatically affect value; Cartier, one of the most famous jewellery companies in the world, founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-Francois Cartier. This graduated five stone baguette cut diamond ring bears the highly regarded name Cartier and was sold at Clevedon Salerooms for £5,000, comfortably more than double what you would expect for a similar ring without that all-important ‘fifth C.’ If you would like John to have a no-obligation look through the contents of your jewellery box to reveal what treasures may be hidden within, why not come and meet him on Friday 16th February at the Salerooms between 10am – 4pm at the Specialist Jewellery, Silver and Watch Free Valuation Day. No appointment is necessary and there is ample free parking.

Customer Service and Best Employer awards for local estate agency Staff feel right ‘at home’ in the spotlight! Westcoast Properties enjoyed a winning evening at the Experts in Property gala awards dinner on Thursday 30th November. Held at Woodbury Park Golf and Country Club, the prestigious event was a celebration of service excellence across more than eighty west country agents who belong to the Experts in Property network. Gemma Pugsley from Westcoast’s Nailsea office picked up Employee of the Month (November) for going above and beyond for her clients. “Gemma coordinated a recent successful sale with incredible sensitivity,” Gemma’s manager, Rachael Yeates, explains. “She was liaising with buyers and vendors across different time zones, communicating with contractors on-site and reassuring all stakeholders at every stage. This award is very well deserved!” Sue Picton of Burnham-on-Sea won the Champagne Prize as the most frequently named staff member in complimentary comments on client feedback forms. The Burnham office also went on to win recognition in the ‘Best all round for customer service’ category (silver). Andrew Stoppani, Associate Director who runs the Burnham branch said: “This award is voted for by the clients and demonstrates that the service that Sue and the rest of the team offers is amongst the best in the whole of the west country.” Westcoast’s awards were rounded off by Martin Crees, Westcoast’s MD, being announced Best Employer (silver). “It is the hard work of the staff that is key to the company’s success,” Martin says. “We strive to provide an environment where our people develop professionally and encourage promotion from within to ensure a strong future for both individuals and the business as a whole.” For further information please contact Nicholas Webber, Director:

Have you heard of Office 365? Tired of purchasing expensive Microsoft Office software for all of your devices individually, only to find when later versions are released, you have to pay full price to upgrade? Thankfully, for households with 5 computers or fewer, Microsoft is offering an affordable new way to attain the latest Office software, with version upgrades free, across all of your devices, under one simple annual subscription, along with a great solution to help sync data between devices. Office 365 is a subscription offered by Microsoft that allows for up to 5 different computers to install the latest version of Office, with all Office upgrades free. For example, the current latest version is Office 2016, but when 2019 is released (Estimated second half of 2018), Office 365 users will be able to instantly upgrade at no extra cost, saving potentially big money. Furthermore, Office 365 also allows for 5 tablet installations and 5 smartphone installations, further increasing the value of this package. Another major benefit of subscribing to Office 365 over the purchasing of one-time Office suites, is the bundled 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage, which not only works as an excellent off-site data backup, but works flawlessly to provide easy file syncing between all of your devices, allowing the user to create documents on one device, and have them appear on all synced devices almost instantly. Note this is 1TB allowance per user, allowing up to 4 other family members to share the same benefits, totalling 5TB of data. No more usb flash drives needed to travel around with your data! It may interest some that Office 365 also includes 60 skype talk minutes (to both landlines and mobiles) for up to 5 users also. This services costs £90 annually, but considering what is included, we find Office 365 to be a great option, particularly for those with numerous laptops/computers/smart devices who want a very sturdy and comprehensive Office solution, with the other great benefits sprinkled on top. If interested, call us on 01278 787846 as we can supply Office 365 and help set it up to suit your needs. Neil Buzzard, Director, Computer Problem Solutions Ltd

Share a little love this February

Sedgemoor Opens Second Round of Grant Scheme for Small Businesses

Valentine's Day can be a waste nightmare unless you choose gifts that will last. Recycle everything by adding empty bottles to your kerbside box, fading flowers to the compost bin, and every last chocolate to your waistline. But there is plenty of love out there that can help you waste far less, recycle much more and save money, from the delights or disasters of your dinner table to the crowded rails in the deepest recesses of your wardrobe, according to Somerset Waste Partnership.

More small and medium sized businesses in Sedgemoor are set to gain a financial boost as the Council reopens its popular grant scheme aimed at helping local enterprises grow and prosper. A sum of £100,000 has been ear-marked by Sedgemoor for allocating grants of up to £5,000 per business to fund a range of activities from recruitment, staff retention and marketing to research and diversification or to pay for new facilities and equipment. Opened on 1st January, the second round of grants closes on 9th February and there is more information about what the money can cover and which businesses are eligible on the Council website: The scheme will prioritise funding for those small or medium sized businesses with the potential for growth and needing a little additional help to develop. Grants cannot be used to supplement a loss of income and only one application per business can be considered. The first round of the grant scheme was launched last summer and a panel of assessors looked at applications from dozens of companies and individuals of which ten were successful including those from a builder, a taxi firm, a rugby club, a tree surgeon and an engineer.

Given that the average family with children wastes around £60 a month of food that could have been eaten, Love Food Hate Waste at is a great free online resource with a feast of ideas about planning meals, shopping carefully, label dates, and portion sizes and Love Your Clothes at aims to cut the estimated 300,000 tonnes of clothes that end up in landfill each year with advice on buying better, care and repair, and how to donate, sell or recycle every scrap of fabric you no longer need. Meanwhile, Somerset hosts dozens of places, from charity stores to vintage outlets to Taunton Recycling Centre’s Reuse Shop, where pre-loved clothes and other items, many hardly if ever used, can be found at great prices. A SWP spokesperson said: “Between them, these lovely sites and shops could save you plenty, free up space, give you a new style, create great family meals, offer you bargains, and help you cut back on costly waste.” SWP is hoping that this month, when the weather and road conditions remain poor, you could spare a little love for your waste crews by being patient if you get held up in traffic behind a truck that is not pulling over to let motorists go by. The SWP spokesperson said: “After near-misses from aggressive drivers squeezing past, crews are told to prioritise safety for all road users as they move heavy loads from both sides of the street, while taking no longer than necessary.” For all information on waste, including the dozen materials recycled in kerbside collections and dozens taken at recycling sites, visit or check out Somersetwaste on Facebook and Twitter.

Bridgwater-based, family-owned Monmouth Scientific is one of the UK’s leading designers, manufacturers and suppliers of Clean Air Solutions and received a grant from Sedgemoor towards research and development. David Pomeroy of Monmouth Scientific said: “The new system will ensure ongoing growth within our business whilst offering a more efficient bespoke product design service to our whole customer base. Thank you SDC!” Drinkwater Tree Services of Lympsham is using its grant to pay for training and equipment that will mean it can work more efficiently, take on more contracts and employ more people, according to office manager Genevieve Drinkwater who said the team was excited about the opportunities it would bring. Engineer Mark Smeed from Othery applied for funding to buy a motive water pump to show how his company could assist businesses using Water Jet Cutting Processes and he says that without this help he would struggle to demonstrate his approach and win new business.

Underground Cathedrals

The Arts Society Sedgemoor were treated to a fascinating December talk on the architecture, design and posters of the London underground by Ian Swankie. The present underground is in fact 55% above ground! In 1800 80% was in the city, 20 years later the reverse was true. The mainline trains stopped on the outskirts because of the destruction of houses required to extend and the disturbance it would cause. Charles Pearson was the first to propose the idea in 1845 and an act of parliament in 1853 approved the building of a subterranean line between Paddington and Farringdon. Excavation began in 1860 with a shallow trench dug beneath Euston Road and then covered over. Many residents were displaced. In Bayswater even today 22-23 Leinster Gardens is merely a façade. It was not very deep and even today a mobile phone signal is obtainable. The Metropolitan line opened in 1863 to the public with Gladstone making an inspection tour in1862. Steam trains were used causing much condensation and smoke. Further lines were added with the Circle being the first to be electrified in 1905. In 1900 there came a big push with Piccadilly, Bakerloo and Northern lines being opened. Above ground stations were built in an attempt to get people to use it. Leslie Green in 1907 designed nine stations, and later Charles Holden 40. He used Arts and Crafts oxblood tiles as a uniform design but adapted to fit the local vernacular. Outside he commissioned statues by Henry Moore and Epstein. Inside he used different tiling for each station for recognition. The typeface was very clear for signs and each had their own logo. In 1908 Frank Pick was publicity officer. Posters advertising exhibitions, the zoo, rugby etc. appeared. Henry Beck developed the tube map in 1932. Commercial artists were used e.g. Polozzi 1982 mural; mosaics, labyrinths. It is still developing with the Jubilee line, 1993-99, Elizabeth line and the new Crossrail line. The tube is the most famous and respected transport system in the World. Rosie Lishman
