Gardening Jobs for December

We’re in winter, so the weather continues to dictate just what we can do in the garden. If conditions are suitable finish any winter digging and gather up any fallen leaves left after autumn. • Fruit trees such as apples and pears can be pruned, but not stone fruit trees like plums and cherries. These types need to be pruned during the warmer months to prevent silver leaf disease. Pruning usually involves removing dead, diseased and damaged growth, and cuts should be made just above an outward facing bud. At the same time you can check on the conditions of any tree stakes. • Indoors, sheds and greenhouses can be tidied up and trays and pots cleaned ready for next year’s sowings and plantings. • Undercover broad beans and shallots can be started in pots, modules or root trainers ready to be planted out later in the new year. • If the weather permits, continue planting new shrubs and trees and divide and replant rhubarb. • Plan ahead for next year and order new seeds, potatoes, plants, fertilizers and composts. • Do some serious daydreaming about your most successful gardening year yet in 2017. For more tips why not join your local gardening group? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meet at 7.30pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. All welcome. Members of the Society free, visitors £1.50. N.B. No meeting in December. The next meeting is 16th January 2017 with a talk “The Development of the Bishop’s Palace Gardens in Wells” by Head Gardener James Cross.

East Huntspill Garden Club wishes all

their members, friends, supporters a very happy Christmas and productive and happy 2017. Entry is £1.50, to include refreshments. There will also be a raffle.

The Huntspill Art Group wish everyone a very happy Christmas and look forward to seeing you at the Village Hall, East Huntspill on alternate Wednesday afternoons. Nearly There The organisations which make up the Bathing Water Quality Group are pleased that the beach at Brean has been classed as Excellent, and Berrow as Good, under the tougher Bathing Water standards. The group is disappointed that the bathing water quality at Burnham Jetty North Beach has again been classified as ‘Poor’. However, the very good news is that all the work that has been going on means the water quality is continuing to improve. Wessex Water work to enhance the sewerage system in and around Bridgwater and Highbridge should be one of the final pieces in the jigsaw to improve things together with all the work by the partners and the local community. Analysis over the past five years has been done to investigate a range of pollution sources. These include household plumbing wrongly connected to surface water systems, overflows from sewerage infrastructure, agricultural inputs, run-off from agricultural land, dog waste, sewage treatment works and septic tanks. There is a huge catchment area related to the sea at Burnham-on-Sea, and the bathing beach is located at the mouth of the two large rivers that drain this area. There is not one discharge source causing the problems; there are ‘thousands’ of sources of pollution across a huge catchment area of the Rivers Parrett and Brue. Six years of concerted effort by members of the group have brought Burnham Jetty North much closer to passing the tougher standards. The group will continue its efforts to tackle the problems across the catchment area. This includes a multi-million pound investment by Wessex Water to help improve the bathing water quality. A spokesman for the Bathing Water Quality Group said, “We are so pleased that we are very nearly there with the classification at Burnham Beach. A huge amount of work has been done over the season and the results are paying off. Everyone has a part to play in protecting and improving our local bathing waters. If we continue to work together to reduce pollution, we can improve water quality and ensure our bathing waters and coastal communities continue to thrive.” Harriet Yates-Smith, Litter Free Coast and Sea Somerset said, “The Environment Agency’s results have shown that Burnham Jetty North’s bathing water is continuing to improve, and this year the community has been part of this progress. Lots of people have shown a real passion for protecting their environment by working with Litter Free Coast and Sea Somerset to set up key groups like the Friends of Burnham Beach clean group or helping to spread the word about responsible dog ownership through the Burnham Pooper Troopers. Businesses have also been a part of the movement towards cleaner seas and beaches through their involvement in the ‘Don’t Feed the Locals’ campaign, helping to spread the word about the negative effects of feeding seagulls. I want to thank everyone who has been involved with Litter Free Coast and Sea Somerset so far and remind people that you don’t have to be part of a group to help protect bathing water. You can help at home too by making sure you don’t put fats, oils and greases down the sink as it can cause blockages. Blockages affect waterways causing raw sewage to flow into our rivers and oceans. Make sure you let them cool and scrape or pour into your food waste bin for recycling or into your household waste. You can help in the loo too by only flushing the three Ps – pee, poo and paper - everything else should go in the bin!”

Burnham Mobile Foot Health Clinic - Treatments in the comfort of your own home.

Feet can be a problem: Do you ever have problems with your feet? If so, now is a good time to look for a solution. In extreme cases, unattended minor difficulties can begin to spoil your enjoyment of life and even limit mobility. Very often, the causes are easily identified but the solutions are difficult to apply unaided, particularly as we get older. Let’s face it, feet are inconveniently located! We are visiting foot health practitioners and complementary therapists, operating across Burnham and surrounding areas, attending people in their own homes or work places. If you are plagued by discomfort with your feet, however great or small it may seem, you might well find that your situation can be substantially improved by one of the treatments we offer. Experience has shown that the provision of foot health care offers a significant improvement to many people’s lifestyles, helping them remain active and energetic, whether at work, engaging in recreational activities, or simply as a way of enjoying their homes and gardens. It has also shown us that this form of care needs to be delivered at a time and place that suits each individual’s lifestyle. Check feet daily: People with diabetes are at much greater risk of developing problems with their feet, due to the damage high blood glucose levels (also called blood sugar levels) can cause to sensation and circulation (blood flow). If they aren’t treated, these problems can cause foot ulcers and infections, and at worst may lead to amputation. However, most foot problems are preventable with good, regular foot care. We look forward to treating you. Please refer to our treatments as listed below: Nail conditions: Thickening of the nail, nail fungal infections, nail cutting & filing, ingrowing nails. Skin conditions: Callus, corns, verruca’s, athletes foot.

Motor Neurone Disease is a totally debilitating disease at the present time. The association can help with advice, a person to ask questions of, meetings for carers and patient, and most of all, fundraising to help provide specialised equipment that the NHS cannot provide, if required in a short space of time. Much research is ongoing, again this requires funding. Classed as a rare disease, almost everyone has heard of someone who has suffered from MND. At any one time 5,000 people have MND in Britain. Please come to see the film The Dressmaker with Kate Winslet at the Ritz cinema on Monday 16th January from 1.30pm and help the local branch. South and West Somerset MNDA. Charity no: 294354.

Bulb Planting in Apex Park - That’s blooming lovely!

Staff from Sedgemoor District Council and the Friends of Apex Park braved the grey and cold weather to plant over a thousand bulbs in awardwinning Apex Park in Burnham and Highbridge during November. In a bid to make Apex Park even more bright and colourful come spring, three 25kg bags of daffodils and 75 bluebell bulbs were dug and planted by the volunteers and staff around various parts of the park. A spokesperson for Sedgemoor District Council said, “We would like to thank all of the Friends of Apex Park who braved the chilly weather and gave up their own time to help. We would also like to thank Friends of Apex Park and local ward councillors, Mr and Mrs Roger and Janet Keen who kindly donated the bluebells to the park. We hope the new bulbs will add to the beautiful spring scenes in Apex and encourage even more visitors to enjoy this wonderful lake and park.” To find out more about joining the Friends of Apex Park, please visit: www.sedgemoor.gov.uk/6350 or call 0300 303 7800 - ask for the Parks team. Contact the Elderly - Brighten Up Your Sunday! One Sunday afternoon a month, local older people and volunteers OF ALL AGES get together for afternoon tea. Our guests are aged 75 and over, live alone, often without family nearby, so the teas are a nice opportunity to leave the four walls behind.

A couple of months ago we launched the first Contact the Elderly tea party group in the Mendips area. The group has older guests and volunteers from Wells, Shepton and lots of surrounding villages. It’s going really well, and has a full house of older guests already. We’d love to get a second group going so we don’t have to keep people on the waiting list. Can you help by volunteering, or spreading the word? We are looking for: DRIVERS: You will collect a couple of older people, in your own car, and take them to a host’s home, joining the rest of the group for tea HOSTS: Offer to hold a tea party for the local group in your family home once or twice a year (downstairs loo and easy access required). COORDINATORS: just a bit of admin and organising makes the party happen. It is a simple yet very effective idea, and it gives our older guests the knowledge that someone really cares. Most importantly it changes lives - maybe yours too. To volunteer or to find out more about being a guest, please contact: Helen Ker-Bridges. Burnham-on-Sea Trefoil Guild

Burnham-on-Sea Trefoil Guild, a branch of the Girl Guide Movement, have been meeting monthly in St. Andrew's Church Hall for the last 14 years. We are a happy, friendly bunch of ladies, but at the moment we have a BIG WORRY on our minds. Our Annual meeting will be held in January, but the New Year may be a sad time for the Trefoil ladies as it appears that we will not be able to elect a Treasurer. Unfortunately without a Treasurer we cannot operate and will have to close. We are hoping that someone, or even two people would offer to be our Treasurer/s and help us with our very small accounts. Thus making a group of ladies happy again. We would be very grateful. If anyone is interested please phone June Garton on 01278 794638 for a chat.
