Last year a great majority of us were stifled by the chilling polar vortex that swung through just after the new year. With temperatures hitting a shocking low for the area, morning delays turned into days off and left many of us house-bound with cabin fever. Here are some seasonal maintenance tips that will keep everyone—and everything, especially your furniture— starting the year off right.

We sit in our sofas as much as we lay in our beds. You want to invest thoughtfully.

How Well Do You Know Your Pet? Pets are individuals—each has it’s own tendencies. There are questions you should ask yourself while considering what kind of investment you want to make on your upholstery choice with your pet in mind.

Decorate in a forest theme, it will have you in a camp -fire state of mind . Keep a monit ored warm pot on the stove full of your favorite herb s for a homema de potpouri. Keep out yo ur wool and your fla nnels.

eter. Keep a pair of cozy slippers by th e door. Keep your te a kettle full of hot water for an accessible wa rm beverage. (see page 29 for a recipe)

Tip: If you’re not sure, watch your pet for a week and learn about them.

Tip: Ask your sales rep to let you take a swatch home overnight. See how your pet reacts to it. If the sales rep declines, it’s not the material for you.

Keeping the “Piece”

Ultimately, you make the choices for your home—your pet just lives there. Considering the ideas above, help keep your stress at a low and your pet from being resented. Be conscious of your pet’s characteristics while understanding the textiles you are considering. Lastly, be honest with yourself about what sacrifices you are willing to make—to take care of your investment and your co-existence with your pet. * IF you find your animal to be a dominating personality, consider this. It is natural for animals to claim their territory. Even though a leather hide is not alive, it still gives off an animal energy to another animal.

ynonymous with beautifully crafted lifestyle collections, Ten Thousand Villages (TTV)—the fair trade retailer celebrating 16 years in the heart of the Squirrel Hill shopping district—has worldwide wares under one roof. From handmade artisan goods to one-of-akind fashion finds, TTV is one-stop shopping reinvented for grown-ups and kids alike. In return for shopping—in December and beyond—customers help create opportunities for artisans in developing countries to earn an income and promote fair trade. TTV shares its mission through great shopping in—and out of the store. “We want our customers and the community to know that we’re available to engage groups about fair trade, women's empowerment and related shopping topics,” says Jennifer Legler, store manager. Legler encourages organizations to use the store’s education service where they will speak to groups, businesses and more about fair trade. The visit comes with an option for groups to fundraise with TTV products, from original jewelry designs to handmade home décor. For more information, email offsite. pittsburgh@tenthousandvillages.com or call 412-421-2160.

Proud to support

remarkable local kids Various life circumstances bring clients to the Pantry. Some need help stretching a fixed income budget. Others come when unemployment runs out. Over 45% are disabled. “If you live in the Northside area and you need help, don’t wait,” says Jay Poliziani, Executive Director. “Bring your ID, your social security number, a bill or any document with your name and address on it, and any document showing your income.” Open every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, the Pantry sees a 20% increase in the number of people served during the winter. In many instances, this is because people have to make the decision between paying utilities and buying food. What makes the Northside Food Pantry unique is its progressive model. It offers a supermarket-style experience for those it serves. “Allowing people to shop for what they will use empowers them,” says Poliziani. “Most of the people that rely on our pantry are forced

into situations on a daily basis where they are dis-empowered, waiting in lines for items and services that the rest of us easily access and take for granted.” How does the Pantry stay open on a shoestring budget? Cash donations, food drives and volunteers. If you want to contribute, here are some ideas. Plan a food drive at your workplace. Purchase food from the Food Pantry’s Amazon Wish List. Volunteer to help organize visitors, push grocery carts for clients and restock shelves. Even if you have a traditional 9–5 job, volunteers sort and bag food from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on the second and fourth Monday of every month. It’s physical work (think: unpacking and sorting boxes) but your efforts will make it easier for volunteers to keep the shelves stocked.

SPENCER LATTERMAN by jenifer schweitzer By raising donations in honor of his Bar Mitzvah, Spencer has raised a little under $17,000 to date assisting 400 orphans in Uganda with the gift of fertile goats. These goats are raised and bred by the orphans. Their offspring create compassion projects, pay-it-forward community growth, and monies for schooling, food and medicine. Spencer is not stopping here. Find out more and how to donate.

NFL KICK HUNGER CHALLENGE

A way for the sports fan to donate is through the Kick Hunger Challenge, sponsored by the NFL. The Challenge is an online fundraiser for food banks in each of the 32 NFL cities. Donations are made through the website under the donor’s favorite team, creating a competition between teams to raise the most money. Here in Pittsburgh, former Steeler player Andy Russell heads up the cause, and all donations benefit the Food Bank. Make a donation to our home team at support.tasteofthenfl.com
