The Journey of The Silkmen! Into the Seventies on a High!

Macclesfield Town were founder members of the Northern Premier League, finishing as champions in each of the first two seasons of the competition, finishing twelve points clear in 1968–69, and by goal average in 1969–70. The 1969–70 season also resulted in a trip to Wembley for the inaugural final of the FA Trophy, a knockout competition for nonleague clubs. Macclesfield Town defeated Telford United 2–0 in front of more than 28,000 spectators to win the competition. Many long time fans still remember the day out to Wembley clearly. This was to prove to be a peak for the club as a period of decline then followed, despite heroic performances by the great Willie Mailey in goal, and the side’s fortunes reached rock bottom when they finished bottom of the Northern Premier League in 1979, a year when the stronger teams from the division formed the national Alliance Premier League, the league that was to later become known as the Conference). The 1980s saw a slow but steady reverse in fortunes. The Silkmen finished as Northern Premier League runners-up in the 1984–85 season, and two years later Macclesfield Town’s third Northern Premier League title resulted in promotion to the Conference. Macclesfield Town finished in mid-table in their first Conference season, and eliminated two League teams, Carlisle and Rotherham from the FA Cup. The club reached the FA Trophy final for the second time in 1989, facing Telford United, the same opponents as Macclesfield Town’s first final nineteen years earlier. However, this time they were to lose out 1–0. From a high of a fourth place league finish in 1989–90, the Silkmen’s final standing diminished each season, and following a struggle against relegation in 1992–93, manager Peter Wragg was sacked, and replaced with former Manchester United and Northern Ireland midfielder Sammy McIlroy... their fortunes were about to change for the better!...Next Month: The Sammy Mac Years.

Seed Sowing on the Cheap by Pippa Greenwood If you want your garden full of colour, interest, perfume and perhaps even tasty crops, there’s no doubt that the least expensive way to do it is to raise your plants from seed. But what can be done to ensure the results in the garden are just as impressive? Start with a little self-restraint. It’s all too easy to buy enough seed to fill a tennis court when you have an average-sized garden. Make a list of what you actually need and put a limit on how many un-planned purchases you’ll allow yourself. Think about sharing. Each packet of seed often contains tens or even hundreds of seeds, so why not agree to swap a few with friends and relatives. This will not only save you money, but will also maximise the range of plants you can grow without increasing your outlay. Don’t be tempted to sow too many seeds at one time. By sowing little and often you’ll maximise flower time of annual flowers and cropping time for vegetables and herbs. It also means that if the conditions are not right for germination on one occasion, all is not lost. You may not need to buy what

you want. Collect seed from your garden or from gardens of friends and neighbours, making sure that the plants are healthy and that they’re ready and ripe or they won’t germinate. Seeds labelled as ‘F1’ will produce flowers whose seeds will not ‘come true’, meaning that the offspring will not be the same as the original plant and will often be less productive. Try to harvest the seed when the plants and the weather are dry, remove any bits of plant debris and allow them to dry off naturally, not becoming too warm or cold. If you can’t sow the seeds immediately, make sure you store them, well labelled, in a cool, dry place. A small heated or even un-heated propagator can help you reliably raise a far wider range of plants from seed. Choose one which is sturdily built and has proper ventilation in the clear plastic lid, otherwise seedlings may die on hot days. We stock some of the lovely UK-made Stewart propagators at www. pippagreenwood.com. Seeds do best if not sown too closely, and by sowing thinly you’ll also save yourself time and money. Wider spacing

makes for less thinning out but if you do have to thin out a bit, remember that most seedlings will perform well if looked after properly. Many herbaceous perennials can successfully be divided into several new plants. Indeed most herbaceous plants do better when occasionally divided as the plant does not become so congested and you can dispose of the grotty bits and plant the good sections into fresh soil. Many plants are also easily propagated from cuttings, and over the next few weeks, you could get some great cuttings from summer favourites such as fuchsias for virtually no cost at all. They’ll be flowering later this year too. Visit www.pippagreenwood. com and sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ where you can choose from a fantastic selection of vegetables for planting AND receive an email each week telling you all you need to know to ensure great results – from just £29. You can also sign up for Pippa’s newsletter and receive a free ebook on organic gardening, and buy Nemaslug and other garden products.

Time For A Spring Clean By Claudia Leaf I had invited an old school friend around for coffee and was trying hard to make a good impression. Suddenly a shaft of spring sunlight flooded my lounge, making me cringe with embarrassment. With a growing sense of shame I watched as this unforgiving shaft of light slid across the room, showing up the grubby finger marks on the door, the ring marks on my glass table and a thick layer of dust on the mantelpiece. When it finally landed at my friend’s feet, close to a dirty paw mark our dog had left on the carpet, I saw a look of alarm on her face. “I’m so sorry, I’ve just noticed. Did I do that?” I had a nanosecond to decide whether I should openly confess my domestic shortcomings or keep quiet. “Oh, don’t worry”, I replied. “It’ll brush off when it’s dry.” She left soon afterwards, still apologising. I took a deep breath and realised it was time for some spring cleaning. An article in the Manufacturer and Builder magazine of 1872 (a “practical journal of industrial progress”) describes spring cleaning as “The season of general cleaning, when all the corners and

closets are overturned and hidden things are brought to light”. Whilst period dramas such as “Downton Abbey” have inspired a new generation to revive traditional kitchen skills, it’s questionable whether 21st century householders will be tempted to adopt the cleaning methods recommended by the magazine, which include black-leading grates, whitewashing walls and scalding bedsteads. The Victorians may have excelled at spring cleaning but they certainly didn’t invent it. Some historians believe that the origins of this tradition date back to the ancient Persian New Year, the Iranian Norouz, which falls on the first day of spring. Iranians still practice “khooneh tekouni” – which literally translates as ‘shaking the house’ – at this time. The Jewish feast of Passover is a religious festival that also hints at a possible origin for spring cleaning. During the holiday the faithful are instructed to refrain from eating any leavened foodstuffs (‘chametz’). The Bible commands that even tiny crumbs must be removed from the house and this results in a ritual hunt for crumbs by candlelight during the evening before the holiday begins.

Christianity has its own spring cleaning traditions. In Greece, householders clean everything thoroughly either before or during the first week of Lent, as a physical manifestation of Lent’s message of spiritual cleansing and renewal. For the ancient Chinese, the concept of New Year cleaning is associated with good fortune. They believed that people should sweep their floors and clean their houses to rid them of any negative influences that may have accumulated during the last twelve months. Householders then locked up the broom for a few days to prevent sweeping away any good luck that might have entered at the turn of the year. When ancient cultures share such similar traditions it’s hard to say exactly when and where the idea of ‘spring cleaning’ originated. However, it’s obvious that the urge to clear away the cobwebs of winter and prepare for the summer months is hard-wired into human DNA. Personally I believe that our seasonal enthusiasm to get busy with a mop and broom is always motivated by the same thing: it’s that accusing beam of sunlight that shows us up in front of guests.

The true cost of a kitchen Painted Ivory is a new colourway for John Lewis’s popular Vermont kitchen, from its Core Collection.

Designing your kitchen

Using a designer is the most expensive option. Check whether they price per hour or per job, and what’s included. A much cheaper option is to design it yourself, as well as source all components such as units, worktops and appliances. Many people choose the middle option of using their kitchen supplier’s design and installation service. If you’re asked to take your own measurements, be careful: even in a new-build, walls are not always true and the surfaces flat. Take at least three measurements at floor, work-surface and wall unit height, and work to the smallest width. If you’re using a mid-range or luxury kitchen supplier, you may be asked to pay a fee for them to measure up and produce a set of drawings.

Comparing prices

When comparing prices, ensure that you know exactly what you’re buying – a cheap option can cost considerably more if you end up paying for extra work. Ask the right questions. Will they dispose of existing fittings? Prepare plumbing and electrical work? Carry out associated building work? Fit floor and wall finishes? What about final decorating, electrical work

How do you ensure value for money when fitting a new kitchen?

and other carpentry such as shelving? Who will fit worktops, sinks, taps and appliances? Is there a guarantee and aftersales service?

Checking for quality

Budget suppliers will give you machine-made units, whereas luxury ones offer hand-built cupboards by cabinet-makers. These aren’t necessarily poor quality, though they will have “plant-on” doors that sit in front of the frame, rather than “in-frame” doors, individually made to fit perfectly inside their frames.

Doors

Solid-wood doors with traditional mortise and tenon joints are the highest quality. In-frame doors may expand and contract with the humidity. Good suppliers offer an aftersales service to check their fitting after a few months. Veneered doors are cheaper and easier to maintain. Check whether painted doors are machine-sprayed, or painted by hand with a brush.

Carcasses

Top-of-the-range carcasses are made of solid wood. Nextlevel-down ones are usually made from plywood or MDF veneer, while cheaper ones are chipboard, sometimes with just hardboard backs. Check the thickness of the chipboard – 18-20mm is a good guide.

Hinges

Poor hinges are usually made from thin metal and will wear so thin that the doors hang unevenly. While many people are happy with good quality Blum or Blumstyle hinges (concealed, adjustable and available in a variety of specifications), solid brass butts are better. Check whether hinges open through a complete 180 degree angle.

Worktops

Very cheap laminate worktops can burn, scratch and wear out quickly. High-pressure laminates are more durable than low-pressure ones; check that the underside is sealed to prevent water damage from appliances beneath. In a more luxurious kitchen package, you’ll be offered solid wood (at least 4cm thick is best), granite (3cm), man-made solid surfaces (such as Corian) or even glass or concrete.

Installation

A good fitter can make an average kitchen appear fantastic, whereas poor fitting will make the most luxurious kitchen look terrible. Consider this if you’re planning on doing it yourself. If you’re using a fitter, ask to see examples of their work. When buying an expensive, bespoke kitchen, it’s wise to use the company’s own fitters.

To read or not to read ‌.. ! Do you like to read? If so, how much do you read? If not (and I will try not to be too abrupt when I ask you this), why the hell not? Reading is amazing! I love to read. I love the fact that with just a few simple words conjured from someone’s brilliant, or absolutely rubbish, imagination you can be transported to a new and exciting world full of fairies and werewolves, or pretentious detectives. You can read about a cool, outspoken character or someone timid and shy, you can go on a fantastical journey accompanied by a heroine with an uncanny ability to be in the right place at the right time or a villain with an extraordinary talent for mischief. I have read numerous books over the years, all of them varying in genre and context. Some of them were better and more engaging than others, but all of them had great ideas whether they were unique, or classic. I’ve read books about lost islands filled with undiscovered treasures, mysteries with unsolved crimes and humorous novels about the seven deadly sins personified! Even if these types of genres aren’t to your liking, there are thousands of assorted books out there just waiting for someone to pick them up and start reading such as biographies, horror or even romance! Of course, reading isn’t just for fun. Reading can help you with your writing skills, and can give you information on practically anything. If you are an aspiring author or journalist, you are probably

encouraged to read things out of your comfort zone to ‘expand your vocabulary’ and whatnot. You can mock but I’ve found that this is actually true and has probably helped make me the amazing writer I am today, not to blow my own horn or anything ha-ha! Reading can also provide an escape for many people, whether they are unhappy at home or at school, or maybe they just have too many responsibilities on their shoulders. Whatever the reason, sometimes losing yourself in a new and exciting world is just what some people need. So, after reading this article (see, you can do it!), why don’t you get up and read something else? Instead of lounging around in front of the television or the computer, why don’t you head down to your local library and open the doorway into a brand new world? You can read anything you want; you just have to put your mind to it. If you’re stuck for what to read you can find a review on the internet or a magazine, and remember! Books aren’t the only thing you can read. If you’re new to this whole page-turning malarkey then you can just read a magazine or even read books on a Kindle or ipad for those technology nuts out there. Well, it’s been absolutely lovely attempting to convince you that reading is fun, but I’ve gotta run. There’s a mystery novel calling my name!

Head for the Hills The gadgets that make the great outdoors even greater Technology isn’t just something you use at home - it can be handy when you’re out and about too, even if your idea of out and about means going far off the beaten track. One of the most useful kinds of outdoor technology is GPS, the satellite system that can work out where we are and help us find where we want to go. There are all kinds of dedicated GPS receivers, ranging from cheaper devices such as Garmin’s £100 eTrex 10 to more expensive navigators such as Magellan’s Explorist 710, which currently costs around £350. You don’t necessarily need to invest in stand-alone GPS kit, however, especially now that smartphones and tablets can run very accurate mapping apps - although if you’re taking a phone or tablet into the wilds, onto a boat or anywhere else nature can destroy it, it’s a very good idea to invest in some protection. You can spend ridiculous sums on all-weather protection, but cases such as Griffin’s Survivor (around £25 for phones, £29 for tablets) - something Griffin admits is “ridiculously over-engineered” - wraps your device in militaryspec protection for a very

reasonable price. It isn’t pretty, but it’s tough - and that’s what really matters here. Technology has even made its way into the humble torch, which these days boasts LED illumination and innovative designs. Nite Ize’s BugLit LED (around £13) has low, high and strobe modes, is visible from a mile away and has rubber feet that you can twist to attach to almost anything, while head-mounted LED lights range in price from around £35 to well over £100. Petzl’s Nao Headtorch (£135) is a bit over the top for the odd walk in the woods, but for serious running and other sports its sensor ensures a uniform level of brightness irrespective of how light or dark conditions become. The most famous outdoors gadget is probably the Swiss Army Knife with its array of tools, but these days you’re more likely to carry a Leatherman or one of its many imitators. With prices ranging from around £30 to £100 for originals and considerably less for clones, the range offers all-in-one devices with tools such as pliers, knives, saws, bottle and can openers, wire cutters, screwdrivers and even

scissors. If you’re planning to be outside for a long time, you’ll need to eat - and gadgets can help you with that too. Jetboil’s Zip Stove (£75) is a gas stove given a high-tech twist: its heat exchanger means it can boil half a litre in just over two minutes, and its neoprene jacket keeps things warmer for longer. Meanwhile the BioLite CampStove (£150) takes the humble campfire into the 21st century: as it burns twigs, bark or pinecones it generates electricity, which powers a fan, which fans the flames for better heat efficiency and less smoke - and there’s enough power left over to recharge your lights, phone or MP3 player. If you need to recharge gadgets but don’t fancy lugging a stove around, no matter how portable, you might be better off with a monkey - and by monkey we mean a Powermonkey, such as the Powermonkey Discovery. Charge it before you go, and when your phone or other digital device runs out of puff the Powermonkey can recharge it twice if it’s an iPhone and three to four times if it’s a standard mobile phone. Expect to pay around £45.

A Matter of Trust

Gary Lee, an IFA from Mulberry Financial Ltd in Macclesfield One of the hardest parts of my job is gaining the trust of prospective clients. The problem that I face is that financial services in the UK have a horrendous reputation for misleading and disappointing their customers. The overwhelming majority of unsuitable advice in the past was given by ‘tied’ salesmen (often linked to a bank) who were limited to a small range of products from one company. I am, and always have been, an independent financial adviser who looks at all available options before choosing the most suitable one for my client. There is no financial incentive for me to choose one pension or investment product provider over another. Since the start of 2013, all adviser fees must be agreed with the client prior to any paid work commencing. So how do I gain your trust? Please look at the testimonials on our website. I can also provide telephone numbers of clients who you can ask about their experience of Mulberry Financial. The reputation of my business and the satisfaction of my customers is the most important thing to me. I am not trying to build an empire – I just want to provide sound advice to local people and to be fairly rewarded for my services. One comment I often get from new clients is that they ’should have come to see me sooner’. Don’t put it off any longer - call me on 01625 427522. Don’t expect things to be too formal – I prefer to speak in plain English, and pressure selling is not on the agenda.

because Macclesfield Youth Club, (MYC for short) will open its doors for the first time!! Based at the Fermain Youth Centre on Oxford Road Road, MYC is described by the founders as a normal youth club but with a BIG 21st century twist! The idea for MYC came about one day last July when Antony Allen, Founder and Chairman, was looking at what provision was on offer for his own 12 year old son and was shocked to discover all the “old” youth clubs of his experience had shut. Thinking back, Antony recalled;

“It was hard to take. They had all ceased operating and it genuinely stirred something inside me. I don’t want to sounds like a hippy or something but I just knew I had to do something about it.” He took to social media to see what the rest of the town felt about the situation and the message received was loud and clear; another youth club was needed and quickly. So in Antony’s head, the decision was made. Immediately and thankfully up stepped a good friend, Nick Pettigrew who loved the idea so one became two and they set out to open MYC as soon as they could. Within weeks, more fell under the “MYC spell” so a committee was formed with Amanda Whittaker (Treasurer) and Ross Massey (Events & Fundraising Manager) completing the management team. MYC was officially alive – but not quite kicking. Co-founder and Club Secretary Nick said; “From the feedback we got,

yes it was obvious that a youth club would be a welcome addition to the current youth provision portfolio the town has. But what was less apparent was why the old clubs disappeared. Our research soon highlighted it wasn’t necessarily a case of no money, no volunteers, no buildings although these factors played a small part. It was more )XQGUDLVLQJ HYHQLQJ ¶0DGH LQ 0DFF· to do with the old ‘table tennis and tuck shop’ model of youth clubs had failed to move with the times. Young People have a million & one possibilities to engage with nowadays. So we knew from day one, if we were to succeed we had to take what was good about old youth clubs but inject a 21st century infusion.” Nick aims to ensure the club engages with today’s tech-savvy young people; “We have created what we call the ‘MYC Alliance’ and this will be the conduit that enables us to team up with as many local groups or individuals that run activities for young people. So, if you want to come down and just chill out and yes, play table tennis and use the tuck shop, fantastic. But, if you want to write music, street-dance, paint – whatever! We will try to make it happen via our continuous outreach programs.”

Thanks to its affiliation with the Youth Federation, parents will be pleased to know that the club conforms to all youth voluntary group guidelines with every policy and procedure in place. Ensuring young people are free to develop and enjoy themselves in a well-run, secure yet fun environment. Although more is always needed, funds have been raised through its own activity and a grant from Peaks & Plains. Plus, subsequent social media activity means the MYC team can now boast to be an impressive 15-strong following the successful volunteer recruitment drive. MYC will open from 7pm to 9pm each Monday and Thursday starting on Thursday 7th March. (11- 16 year olds only), If you would like membership forms (11 are interested in volunteering, can help financially or run activities that you would like to be part of the MYC Alliance, please email all enquiries to maccyouthclub@hotmail.co.uk &R IRXQGHUV $QW DQG 1LFN or visit facebook.com/maccyouthclub 29

Who can you turn to when the medical profession has let you down? Leading Cheshire law firm Jobling Gowler, say changes to legislation being made by the Government on 1st April 2013, will lead to significant restrictions on the availability of legal aid funding for many medical negligence claims. Partner Simon Gowler says that, “Legal Aid will no longer be available for medical negligence claims except in a very limited number of cases involving children who have suffered a brain injury during their mother’s pregnancy, during the course of their delivery/birth or during the first 8 weeks after their birth. Any other victims of medical negligence who do not satisfy those criteria will be unable to use Legal Aid to pursue their medical negligence claims. In addition there are further changes to the funding of medical negligence claims from 1st April 2013 which will make it less attractive for Claimants to bring medical negligence claims. This is because it is unlikely that they will retain 100% of their compensation and will have to contribute towards their legal costs in most cases. Mr Gowler says “the implications are clear – if you or a loved one has been injured as a result of medical negligence DO NOT DELAY in seeking immediate professional advice. Jobling Gowler Solicitors are your local specialist medical negligence lawyers. They have four specialist medical negligence solicitors each with over 15 years’ experience of medical negligence claims. The firm holds a contract with the Legal Services Commission and is able to offer Legal Aid for medical negligence cases, while it remains available. DO NOT DELAY, contact one of their specialist medical negligence solicitors today on 01625 614250 or by email – enquiries@jobling-gowler.co.uk
