Welcome to the joint July/August “summer” issue of Local People, particularly to any new readers, and indeed, advertisers. We are Macclesfield’s very own local magazine which has been bridging the gap between local residents and local businesses for nearly 11 years now! Where has it gone!? This week I have been reminiscing in a whimsical way about the summer of 1976 … exams under the belt, summer spent working in Lekermans (or Leks as it was called in Wilmslow!), ‘Sing Baby Sing’ blasting out on the radio cassette player, good times with good friends … and blisteringly, searingly hot!! Hmm! At the time of being whimsical, I was at Goostrey Rose Queen with the Local People Junior Editor aka visiting Rose Princess dodging rain of the monsoon variety!! Was I looking back through rose tinted spectacles? Time will tell!! Anyway, this issue, before you do the Cash Competition, you will have to find it .. clue, it is towards the back of the magazine! Along the route you’ll find some interesting editorial, new advertisers and a plethora of happenings going on over the summer, so take a good look along the way. If you have a local business, why not get your message out there where it counts - in the hands of local residents! And if you fancy giving it a go, we will have our regular summer ‘special offer’ going on … give us a ring to find out how you can save money whilst giving your ad the best chance of working by appearing in several consecutive issues. Repetition breeds recognition, so they say!! You heard it here first, folks!!! Watch out for our earlier deadline though for the September issue! If you’re going away, have a great time! If you’re not, take a look at what’s going on locally and do something different! If you’re waiting for exam results, good luck! If you’re leaving school, you will be fine! I will be taking a train to Spain again so see you with the September issue!

Have a lovely summer, Heather

Cake and Bake Chocolate Mousse Brownies Take the classic rich and squidgy chocolate brownie recipe a step further with a creamy milk chocolate mousse topping for the ultimate chocolate lover’s dessert!

Ingredients: BROWNIE BASE

• 150g dark chocolate, broken into pieces • 225g unsalted butter, diced • 350g light muscovado sugar • 4 medium eggs, beaten • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 225g plain flour

MOUSSE TOPPING

• 100g milk chocolate, broken into pieces • 100ml double cream • 1 large egg, separated • Fresh raspberries, chocolate drops and mint sprigs, to decorate

Makes 12 Ready in 1hour 30mins plus cooling and chilling

TIP

Add a few drops of mint extract to the chocolate mousse mixture for an after dinner mint flavour.

1. Preheat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/Gas 4.

Grease an 18 x 28cm tray bake tin and line the base and sides with baking paper.

2. Place the dark chocolate and butter in a large

heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove from the heat and stir until smooth. Leave to cool for 10 minutes, then whisk in the sugar, eggs and vanilla extract.

3. Sift over the flour and fold into the chocolate

mixture with a metal spoon. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and level the surface. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until just firm to the touch - it should still be a little squidgy in the centre. Leave to cool completely in the tin.

4. To make the mousse topping, melt the milk

chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Remove from the heat, cool for 5 minutes then stir in the cream until smooth. Cool for a further 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, then beat in the egg yolk.

5. Whisk the egg white in a clean grease-free bowl

until holding stiff peaks, then gently fold into the chocolate mixture. Spread the mousse in an even layer over the top of the cold brownie and chill in the fridge for 3-4 hours (or overnight) until set. Remove from the tin and cut into 12 squares. Serve topped with fresh raspberries, chocolate drops and mint sprigs.

Does your Will protect your family?

Many of us, despite good intentions, have relegated drawing up a Will to the bottom of our to-do list. Given the potential significance of not having such a document place, the Law Society recommends we should give this task greater priority. The Law Society recommends that “Everyone should have a will, but it is even more important if you have children, you own property or have savings, investments, insurance policies or you own a business.” Surprisingly research commissioned by the Law Society reveals that 73% of 16 – 54 year olds don’t have a Will while 64% over the age of 55 have made a Will: still leaving 36% of those people dying “intestate” (without having made a Will). If you die having not made a Will, you will have no say in how your estate is divided. This may mean that it does not go to the people your wish or that it is distributed in the most tax efficient way. It is possible through legal action to pursue a claim on the basis of financial dependency, unmarried partners and those not in a civil partnership have no rights in relation to their deceased partner’s estate – however long they might have been living together. The Inheritance & Trustees Powers Act 2014 came into force on 1st October 2014. This changed the rules slightly as to who will benefit in various situations.

To advertise with us, just call 01625 265551

… If there is nobody that meets the criteria for benefiting under the intestacy rules, the deceased’s estate will ultimately pass to the Crown (i.e. the government). Whilst you may think that this is unlikely, £8m went to the government last year because people died intestate. (Furthermore, it is estimated that by 2018, the government will receive nearly £6b from inheritance tax. Wills can also assist in reducing the ultimate inheritance tax liability). As more people are choosing to live together without actually marrying or becoming civil partners, making a Will is a topic that should not be overlooked. We have seen many situations where individuals have come to us after a person has died intestate. Frequently unfortunate results have arisen as a consequence of a failure by unmarried couples to make appropriate Wills which provide for their circumstances. If all of the assets are held jointly, there is less cause for concern. However, frequently, houses are held in the name of one person only and bank accounts etc. are held in individual names. You can imagine the stress that can arise in this situation – particularly when someone has just lost their long term partner and will be feeling vulnerable anyway. If you are in this situation yourself or you perhaps have children who may be co-habiting, please do feel free to contact us so that we can discuss your individual situation. We offer a free initial appointment to discuss your circumstances and to advise you of the options open to you. Alternatively if you have an existing Will that you would like to review to ensure that it is still meets the current legal requirements whilst also meeting your exiting wishing, Jobling Gowler offer a free Will review service to our clients. Ensure that your family are protected and contact us on 01625 614250 or via e-mail at enquiries@jobling-gowler.co.uk. We look forward to hearing from you.

Local People ‌. talks Transition Helping your child cope with transition and change

Communication and Drama specialist Kalini Kent is also a Parent and Youth Coach and will be writing an occasional series for LPM about common issues we all face family relationships, coping with stress, bullying and conflict, communicating more effectively, building confidence and other problems LPM readers wish to be tackled. In this issue she explores the common types of transition young people face, the stresses that result and strategies to cope and build resilience in young people. Transition and Change are an inevitable and important part of life, especially where it leads to progression and growth. It can be gradual or sudden and last for differing periods of time, but always involves a movement from an old/known situation to another. Children and young people face many types of transition and change and research supports what parents have long since known: transitions are as stressful for children and young people as they are for adults; and the resulting stress can have far-reaching effects on their emotional wellbeing and academic achievements. Transitions young people face can be: Physical: moving to a new home, a new class, new school; Emotional: leaving friends behind, losing a loved one, parental divorce or separation; Intellectual: moving from nursery to primary, to secondary, to 6th form then university; or entering the workplace, change of teacher, first exams; Physiological: going through puberty, or a long term medical diagnosis. Some situations may be more challenging than others, but whatever the changes, any excitement and curiosity can be tainted by fear and uncertainty, which is unsettling and can take young people way out of their comfort zone, causing high levels of anxiety and stress. This can manifest itself in many ways including sleep problems, headaches, poor concentration, lack of motivation, pessimism, feeling overwhelmed and aggressive or angry behaviour. Many young people find it impossible to ask for help, and some who appear to be coping are not, choosing to withdraw. It is at times like these that parents might find it difficult to connect with their children, but it is probably the time when they need the support the most. Reducing difficulties during change and giving support and coping strategies can make a huge difference to the young people and their families. If young people can develop strategies to cope with these transitions, it is a skill that will help them through life, giving them a positive experience of managing change and the resilience to overcome adverse circumstances. In fact research has shown that how well a person deals with new situations depends on their resilience levels the ability to face tough situations and bounce back, feel good about themselves, have focus, confidence and independence. There are many positive ways that a parent can help their child develop resilience 16 and coping strategies and here are a few: To advertise with us, just call 01625 265551

Be a strong role model and focus on the positives - Young people flourish with an optimistic attitude and staying positive during stressful times gives them confidence and a pattern of behaviour to follow. Be involved – spend quality time with your child, sharing life stories and experiences – this helps to keep the lines of communication open so they feel reassured that you are there for them physically and emotionally. Listen to them – especially when they are unhappy or protesting, as it aids deeper understanding and shows concern, which will encourage them to share their fears and ask for help. Acknowledge their anxiety – show you understand their fears and concerns and follow up with reassurance to help ease the stress. Arm them with Information – where, what, when, who, etc about their new situation so that they are prepared well beforehand and ready for the change. Maintain routines - Young people ideally need consistency, routine, reliability and familiarity - known regular things will help give them security during periods of change. Small Steps – break what may seem a huge step to them into bite size chunks, taking it one step at a time, to help them cope and reduce feelings of overwhelm. Instil Confidence – help them feel secure and confident in their capabilities to tackle any new situations. Use stress reduction techniques – such as mindfulness, meditation or breathing exercises.

The important thing to acknowledge is that nothing stays the same: the transition is a phase and they will come out the other end. Our job as parents is to help them make that passage as easy as possible. Local People - A Teenage Perspective …… Local People - A Teenage Perspective A small group of students from various year groups at Macclesfield

A small group studentstofrom various year groups at MacclesAcademy meetsofregularly discuss ideas, work together and support field meets The regularly tothey discuss together each Academy other as writers. articles writeideas, for us work look at life from a sometimes refreshingly alternative and support each other as writers. perspective! Our at life a sometimes refreshingly Thisarticles issue, look the end offrom an era! Tristan Staszko was different one of our earliest contributors, we wish him the best of luck in the future!

The beginning of the end … So, it’s almost the end of the year (at least where I am, anyway). Luckily for me, I only have a few exams left at school but I know there are students who still have many more to do. Exam period is always a stressful time for students – we study hard for exams we have worked our whole educational life towards. We do not have much time free and it is a demanding time with many students sitting up to three exams a day! So, in coming to the end of my time at The Macclesfield Academy it is good to reflect back on what I have done with my time and where the next part of my journey will take me. In the not too distant future, there are going to be some interesting events happening (for me, anyway) at the end of the year. We are due to have our leavers assembly soon, where we will come together as a year group and celebrate all the positive things we have achieved whilst at The Macclesfield Academy – it’s a good way to reflect back on our time at school and look forward to what our future holds. This will mark our ‘last day’ (but, technically we will be coming back into school for exams and revision classes). So, we will sign our shirts – sharing our best wishes with each other. Also, coming up, we’ll have the signature ‘prom’ for people who want to go and say goodbye to friends. This will be happening after all our exams have finished so it’s a great way to celebrate all our hard work we have invested. Also, it is a good time to see each other and be together as our year and friendship groups one last time before we go in our separate directions. It marks the beginning of the end, as it is an event that happens just for the students leaving this year. Don’t forget the fact that we’re all going away – for me, I’ll be going to Tytherington Sixth Form. But I know many other students in my year will be pursuing other avenues. So, yes, I may see some of my peers again next year when we start sixth form together but for others this may mark the end of our unity as a year group. Hey, some of us are even going into jobs! Whatever the future holds for us ‘leavers’ we have all been on our journey together and all have our futures to look forward

Travelling Abroad This Year?

What’s the best way to spend your money? compared with other payment methods. • You pay a fee when you buy them, and also commission when they’re exchanged.

It used to be a simple choice between traveller’s cheques or cash, but now there’s a variety of cards that offer more convenience and security when spending money abroad. In fact there are so many, it can be a bit of a minefield when trying to choose the right one. So here’s a brief explanation of the choices available for this summer’s getaway, plus the pros and cons of each.

Traveller’s Cheques

Good old-fashioned traveller’s cheques can be useful as a backup. Fee levels and exchange rates vary greatly according to the country you’re in, however, and also between individual banks. Pros • Handy if you don’t want to carry large amounts of cash around, or are worried about using cards abroad. • Can be replaced within 24 hours if they’re lost or stolen. • They can be used as cash in some outlets, and you get change in the local currency. Cons • Exchange rates can fluctuate widely, and are generally poor when

It’s a good idea to make a separate note of each cheque number as soon as you get them - if they’re lost or stolen, it’s easier to arrange replacements.

PrePaid Cards

Some of the newer prepaid cards offer very competitive exchange rates, as well as extra features such as a smartphone app. A word of warning though - there have been problems accessing money abroad using some prepaid cards, as it’s not always made clear that the first time you use the card, it has to be at a cash point. Many people have also found they get ‘Pin Unrecognised’ messages, even though they’re using the correct number. If you withdraw too much cash you’ll get a 2% service charge, and support is only provided during UK business hours. Pros • They’re pre-loaded, so it’s easier to budget and you can lock in a good exchange rate. • Convenient and easy to use, but check the rules carefully. • Widely accepted abroad. • Safer than carrying lots of cash. Cons • If the card is lost or stolen

you may be charged for a replacement. • Some providers charge high fees. • Potential fees include application, transaction and even an inactivity charge if you don’t use the card for a while. The main message here is to carefully check all the small print before you sign up for a prepaid card.

CrediT Cards

Still one of the most popular ways to spend money abroad, credit cards give you interestfree credit as well as valuable consumer protection. You also have the same fraud protection as in the UK, so if the card is lost or stolen you should be covered. Some providers don’t charge for transactions abroad (as long as you don’t withdraw cash), so it’s well worth researching these rather than using your everyday credit card. Pros • Some protection for goods over £100 via Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. • They’re safe and secure, but make sure payment is taken in front of you. • Interest-free credit on your holiday spend. Cons • There’s a risk of fraud or ‘cloning’ if the card is taken out of sight when you pay. • If you withdraw cash you’ll be charged daily interest.

Why should you seriously consider a Pre-Paid Funeral Plan? According to the Sun Life Dying Report 2013, the cost of an average funeral has risen by 225% since 1997 and a conservative estimate suggests that by 2024, an average funeral will cost between £7,000 and £8,000. The benefit of pre-paying your funeral costs now is the peace of mind that, no matter how much funeral costs increase over the years, your funeral has been paid for at today’s prices. This ensures that, at the time of death, loved ones can grieve for the deceased without having to worry about where the money for the funeral is going to come from and reduces the chance of family squabbles over the funeral arrangements. The Funeral Plan Provider keeps your payment safe and will wrap a trust around the money, ensuring it only goes to the Funeral Director and giving you total peace of mind. There are many providers offering funeral plans, but Peace of Mind Funeral Plans can arrange the most suitable cost -effective plan from all the major providers such as Golden Charter, Golden Leaves, Dignity and Safe Hands. With a simple plan starting from only £2,075 and various monthly payment options available, starting from just £21.29 per month, it makes sense to contact them today on 01625 410688.

• Some shops have a minimum transaction amount for using credit cards.

with credit cards. • Charges can quickly add up if you withdraw cash regularly.

Finding a credit card that’s geared up for use abroad is key - you’ll have lower or no fees, and six weeks to pay off your spending interest-free.

debiT Cards

You can use a debit card to pay for goods or withdraw cash abroad, but you’ll probably have to pay a non-sterling transaction fee. There’s no daily interest on cash withdrawals, but you might be charged a cash machine transaction fee each time you use one. Pros • Easily blocked if the card is lost or stolen. • Chip and pin protection. Cons • No consumer protection as

For the sake of safety and simplicity, you might want to pay using the local currency rather than in sterling because of the huge disparity in exchange rates.

Cash

Although it’s not a good idea to carry lots of cash with you, you’ll need to pay for some smaller items this way, and organising it before you go will save money. Bear in mind though, that insurance policies only cover around £200 to £500 of cash on average. Pros • You can shop around for a good exchange rate before you go. • Can be used anywhere.

Cons • May not be fully covered by your insurance policy. • Not as safe as carrying a plastic card. It’s a good idea to take some cash as backup for your plastic card(s) and traveller’s cheques, and buying it well before you leave means you can track down the best rates of exchange. https://www.moneyadvice service.org.uk/en/articles/travelmoney-options-cash-cards-andtravellers-cheques http://www.moneysavingexpert. com/credit-cards/prepaid-travelcards http://www.money.co.uk/travelmoney/what-is-the-best-way-tospend-abroad.htm http://blog.moneysavingexpert. com/2013/03/12/using-plasticoverseas-always-pay-in-euroseven-if-it-says-0-commission/

Local People ‌ from the past

Danika Lloyd, family historian, from local company Family History Helpers will be kindly giving us an insight over the next few issues about what life was really like for local people of the past.

Cheshire’s Royal Military Asylum Children Eighty-two children were sent to Cheshire from the Chelsea Royal Military Asylum (RMA), mostly between 1805 and 1825 - the majority of whom were orphans whose father s had died in military service. The RMA opened in 1803 to care for such children but quickly became overcrowded. What to do with boys who did not want to enlist and girls once they reached 14 and were supposed to leave the asylum was a growing concern as they had no means to provide for themselves. The indentured apprenticeship programme was a solution to this problem; there were over 300 trades at the time which required indentured apprentices. Seventy seven girls and five boys came to Cheshire. One boy James Donnaly, was apprenticed to a Macclesfield silk weaver when he was 11 years old, the other boys served in the Cheshire Regiment. The majority of the girls were apprenticed to Mellor Mill, a six story cotton mill in Marple; a few went to Quarry Bank Mill, Styal; and one girl, Elizabeth Booth, arrived in Congleton aged 13 as a domestic servant to complete a housewifery apprenticeship . The children were awarded £5 5s on completing their apprenticeship (a significant sum for them in those days), however this was dependent on their master writing a letter to the asylum but that was not always the case - some missed out on the award, records show at least two girls were docked pay for bad behaviour and one had been charged for broken windows on two separate occasions! I ve recently been researching one of the girls, Elizabeth McGinn, who arrived at Quarry Bank in 1815 aged 13; she had been admitted to the RMA at just 3 years old and was there during a severe outbreak of Egyptian opthalmia (which causes severe inflammation of the eyes). Quarry Bank s records show she saw the doctor at least 6 times for eye troubles during her time at the Apprentice House although I doubt the treatment of induced blisters on her temples would have helped! Elizabeth went on to marry a fellow Quarry Bank apprentice and they had 8 children. She and her family moved from Quarry Bank to Lowerhouse, Bollington in the early 1830s (when Samuel Greg Junior opened his mill there); her husband and those of her children who were aged 10 and over all worked in Lowerhouse Mill. Many of Elizabeth s children and grandchildren remained in Bollington and some of her descendants will likely still be there to this day! Could she be your ancestor?

Once again, our feature this month is about someone that we think we have known for a long time …. yet we have realised in a very short time recently, that we really don’t know them at all! Dave Smith is one of our stalwarts, having advertised with Local People since the beginning when it was almost unrecognisable from the magazine it is today. We have exchanged a few emails over that time, we have done the odd extra feature, but it was only recently that Dave emailed and asked if I would be interested in reading the book which he had written… “The Psychic Driving Instructor”! Sounded interesting, I thought, so I invited him to speak at Macclesfield Free Business Networking (see Page 5). Wow! Absolutely fascinating! We asked him to tell us more …. Dave is an ‘ordinary bloke’ as he puts it. Moved from Manchester to Macclesfield when he was little, was one of the first pupils to go to Ivy Bank School (in the same class as Olympic hockey player Sean Kerly!!) and from there went to Kings School where his biggest achievement was Grade 8 Classical Guitar! He went on to Macclesfield College to do A levels, and had a crazy time, doing what students do! In time, he ended up working for the Macclesfield Mercedes Garages, having worked his up via Halfords and BMW in Crewe and found a vocation for training, working with people and getting the best from them and their particular abilities and personalities through his approach. At the same time, with a love of driving, he decided to train as a driving instructor alongside his hectic life amongst the posh cars! One day, much to everyone’s disbelief, he just walked out of Mercedes to set up as a driving instructor full time.

And very successful he is at it too … but why exactly? Dave told me that, in hindsight, he only trained people back then in the same way that he approaches his driving lessons now. He just didn’t realise why at the time! Right from the start, he realised that pupils were coming to him who weren’t your average pupil. There was something different going on and they were being sent to him for a reason. It was only at the end of 2010 when he had a massive awakening when all become clearer and reasons were put into context. Dave realised that he was being guided by a higher force Spirit - and in the following few months, his life was turned upside down as he learned lots about life, spirituality and how all these things fitted into place. David believes that there is a global awakening going on and that he himself has been awakened spiritually to help people. This spiritual energy is enabling people to take control of their lives in a way they’ve not been able to do before. As a now committed spiritualist, Dave believes he teaches in a way which self empowers people to work out why they are doing what they are doing, in the driving context, and not to just do things by rote. He was subsequently attracted to a spiritualist church to find out more. He explained how he had been feeling and they encouraged him to keep a diary of all the strange and, as he puts it, crazy things he had been noticing and feeling and eventually, this has manifested itself in the publication of his book, “The Psychic Driving Instructor” which he hopes will help other people to recognise events and realise that they are not going mad but that the spirits are guiding them. Spiritualism, he has found, is an uplifting and helpful phenomenon and certainly nothing to do with horror films! One should trust one’s own instincts and inner feelings to make one’s own judgements - and basically be kind to people. He firmly believes in self empowerment and that in 2012, there was a big change. Many people would have come to watersheds in their lives, without actually realizing it. This is all to do with intense energy shifts and a new consciousness spreading around the world. It is all very fascinating stuff and far too much to write about in this very short article. However, Dave firmly believes that he is being guided to diversify his own energies into new channels to enable him to help others so another book is on the cards, together with group driving ’clinics’ to understand more about driving and answer particular questions. He is also happy to come and talk about his experiences to any group who may be interested - but he would also like to assure you that he is still a down to earth, ordinary bloke. He plays in a heavy rock band (Social Orphan, soon to appear at Swan with 2 Necks!), football every Sunday and dances salsa and ballroom at Mykita. But he does know more about why now …..

We have 3 copies of The Psychic Driving Instructor to give away to the first three people to get in contact with us by email or telephone. Otherwise, it is available from Dave himself, from 29 WaterstonesPlease in Macclesfield from Amazon. when An extraordinary read! mentionorthis magazine responding to advertisements!

How will you be spending your summer holiday? Did you know that in the 1300’s, St Michael’s Church was home to an anchoress. In Christianity, an anchoress is a woman who chooses to withdraw from the world to live a solitary life of prayer and mortification. The word comes from the Greek “anachoreo” meaning to withdraw. In the Savage Tower there is a small cell where she lived and prayed for the Town. It was home to another in the early 1500’s. For two weeks this summer, URC Minister Rev Marion Tugwood will revive the tradition, living in the cell to experience the life of one who has retired from the world. In the Germanic lands, from at least the tenth century it was customary for the bishop to say the office of the dead as the anchorite/anchoress entered his/her cell (or stronghold), to signify death to the world and rebirth to a spiritual life of solitary communion with God and the angels. Sometimes, if the anchorite was walled up inside the cell, the bishop would put his seal upon the wall to stamp it with his authority. But some anchorites freely moved between their cell and the adjoining church. Rev Marion will not be walled in, but intends to remain in the cell rather than joining the activities of the Church. Most anchoritic strongholds were small, with three windows. Viewing the altar, hearing Mass, and receiving Holy Communion was possible through one small, shuttered window in the common wall facing the sanctuary, called a "squint". Anchorites would also provide spiritual advice and counsel to visitors through this window, as the anchorites gained a reputation for wisdom. There was another small window that would have allowed access to those who saw to the anchorite's physical needs, like food and other necessities. The third window quite possibly faced the street but was covered with translucent cloth to allow light into the cell. They ate frugal meals, and spent their days both in contemplative prayer and interceding on behalf of others. Rev Marion will pray over prayer requests left in the Savage Chapel during the two weeks of her confinement in the cell, August 21st to September 3rd.

Plan Your Planting by Pippa Greenwood

Many gardens are now looking a little tired, as summer flowers try hard to put on a reasonable show despite the tougher conditions and the fact that their season is drawing to a close. It is not a good time for planting shrubs or trees, as the soil tends to be fairly dry, so you can’t even make things look better with a shrub or two. So, do what you can to perk up flower beds and borders and then start to plan ahead for spring - right now garden centres are starting to take delivery of huge quantities of fabulous bulbs, just ready for planting, and a sure fire way to get your garden looking fabulous in those first few months of next year, and indeed for years to come. Get down to the garden centre sooner rather than later, so that you can have the pick of the bunch. Many bulbs will actually start to put down roots at the back end of summer and into autumn, giving them a head start and ensuring a fabulous display in spring, so prompt planting is advisable. The

only thing you need to delay is the planting of tulips; these are best planted in October to help them avoid a nasty infection called tulip fire. Don’t forget that many mail order catalogues are available and these have an even bigger array of bulbs, often including many of the more unusual varieties, so send off for a few of these to ensure you have something particularly special to enjoy - and to show off to your friends and neighbours! If ordering from catalogues you will need to get a move on, however, so send off for a few as soon as possible. Then enjoy putting your feet up with a cuppa and a pile of catalogues, ready to choose some delightful bulbs ready for planting in the next month or so. Before you set off to the garden centre, take a look at your borders - and indeed anywhere else in the garden - and decide where you can cram in a few bulbs. Remember, the great thing is they are often in flower before the rest of the garden gets going, and so they

can be used to under-plant existing trees, shrubs and herbaceous flowers. Bulbs are an excellent way to make the most of every square metre of garden soil, and to ensure that your garden looks lovely as early as possible in the year. Many bulbs do really well in containers, so if you have a permanently planted up container this too can be under-planted with several layers of spring flowering bulbs. Use a transplanting trowel to plant in these tight spaces and that way you’ll minimise damage to the existing plants’ roots. If you are new to using bulbs and feel unsure of what goes together, don’t feel frightened to experiment. Alternatively, many catalogues and even some garden centres offer mixed selections of bulbs for specific purposes and there are also some lovely packs of bulbs following colour themes. These usually represent good value for money too. Have you got a dull patch of lawn? Brighten it up in the Continued on Page 42

early months by planting some small bulbs. Things like crocus or miniature narcissus are particularly useful, as once the flowers have faded you don’t have too much deteriorating foliage to cope with. In larger areas, consider planting up drifts of fullsized daffodils, but make sure that the grass beneath these trees or shrubs is not something you want to keep regularly mown, as you will have to wait for at least six weeks after flowering before you can safely remove the leaves of the daffodils. When choosing bulbs, always make sure they are in good condition before you buy. With a quick look through the packaging (bulbs are often hidden by large

quantities of sawdust or wood shavings) you should be able to find the bulbs itself. Avoid any which are showing even the slightest signs of deterioration such as sunken brown spots, excessive softness or the presence of patches of bluish mould on their surface. Larger bulbs generally seem to do better than smaller versions of the same variety so, if possible, choose really good sized plump ones.

you keep them in a cool and well ventilated spot before planting, as this is essential to reduce the risk of them deteriorating. Next month I’ll be looking at novel ways to make the best use of the gorgeous array of available bulbs, so plant some now and then treat yourself to a few more for September planting! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for Pippa’s ‘Winter thru’ Spring’ collection of vegetables for planting next month, a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including Nemaslug to control slugs, pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, pull-out mini tunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

If you want to buy large quantities of the same variety, then it may be possible to buy a net of bulbs from your garden centre or direct from a mail order specialist nursery. Ideally bulbs should be planted promptly, but if this isn’t possible make sure that

Home & Interiors Come Back To Carpet

no longer a dull or dated option, modern carpet can be both practical and fashionable, offering an almost unlimited choice of colour and pattern and, perhaps surprisingly, an enormous range of textures, too. Why choose carpet? Wood floors are timeless and durable, tiles practical and laminates and vinyls inexpensive. So why opt for carpet? Well, carpet is, indisputably, soft and comfortable underfoot – especially in a bedroom or if there are small children crawling around. It absorbs sound – which helps if you have teenagers who are prone to clattering up and down the stairs. And it is non-slip and forgiving if you have a fall, and it is insulating against

By Katherine Sorrell

heat loss and draughts. On the downside, although carpet won’t scratch, scuff or splinter, it may stain and wear. Regular vacuuming is the only maintenance it needs, but accidental spills can be a nightmare to deal with, and it’s unlikely to last longer than stone, tiles or wood.

If you choose a carpet that is suitable for general use, you can lay it throughout to create a seamless look that pulls a decorating scheme together. Carpets are inadvisable in kitchens, and best avoided in bathrooms, though if you insist, there are splash-proof types available.

choosing a carpet Deciding which carpet to buy can be a complex and confusing business. As a general rule, the deeper the pile and the more luxurious the finish, the greater care the carpet will need. The shorter and denser the pile, the better it is likely to wear – if you fold the carpet back and part the pile, you should not be able to see the backing. So your final choice will probably involve trading off softness and comfort against durability and resilience. Standard carpet descriptions are for light, moderate, general, heavy and extra heavy domestic use, which will give you a good indication of how suitable a carpet will be for each room. Obviously, a carpet in a hallway will need to be very tough – perhaps a high-end 80:20 twist classified for heavy domestic use, while in a living room (general domestic) you’ll probably require a combination of a luxury look with a robust performance, such as a loop or velvet, and a spare bedroom could be much more delicate – a velvet or Saxony classified for light domestic, for example.

When it comes to choosing a carpet style, ask your retailer for samples and take them home where you can see them in your own environment and your own light. If you are redecorating from floor to ceiling, it’s a good idea to choose the carpet first and ensure that the rest of the scheme co-ordinates with its colour and pattern – remember, the floor is the largest area you will see in a room, so it’s important to get it right. When you are doing building work, however, always install the carpet last, to protect it from splashes and spills. Last, but by no means least, when you work out your budget don’t forget the cost of underlay and fitting. Get your room professionally measured to ensure that you don’t over- or under-order and when replacing a carpet, always buy new underlay. Not only will it ensure that your new carpet sits properly and wears evenly, but it could prolong its life by up to 40 per cent. image - Padstow candy spot carpet, £69.99 per square metre, Brintons, tel 0800 505055, www.brintons.co.uk.

carpet fibres

carpet pile

Wool: Naturally flame-retardant and resilient to compression, wool is warm, soft, durable and does not soil easily. 100% wool is a sumptuous choice. The best wools come from Britain and New Zealand.

loop: Pile tufts are left uncut and can either feel smooth or are like natural flooring such as sisal and Loop: The pile tufts are left uncut and can either feel smooth or may replicate the appearance of natural flooring such as sisal and coir. Not a good idea if you have pets, as animal claws and loop piles do not mix.

nylon: Extremely hard-wearing, nylon has the greatest abrasion resistance of all fibres. It takes dye and stain-resistance treatments well. polypropylene: Inherently resistant to stains and abrasions, polypropylene wears well and is valuefor-money. It is used mainly in plain twists, loop patterns and saxonies. polyester: Stain-resistant, light and bulky, polyester has a lustrous appearance and is mainly used in plain, thick saxonies. mixes: In order to enhance performance, give a particular feel or reduce price, the four fibres may be blended together. Pure wool, for example, is very expensive, so cheaper options mix a synthetic fibre with wool. The most common blends are 80% wool with 20% nylon (often recommended as the ideal combination of softness and strength); 80% wool with 10% nylon and 10% polyester; and 50% wool with 50% polypropylene.

Cord: The loops are pulled tight against the backing, giving a very low pile. Saxony: A deeper pile with a soft, sensuous feel and appearance. Very popular in bedrooms. Shag: Extra-long pile – watch out for high heels. Twist: A loop pile that uses yarn with a higher twist than usual to give a coarse, rugged surface. The best types twist two yarn ends tightly together for a very hardwearing carpet. Velvet: A sheared, short pile with a smooth, luxurious finish.
