Dear Readers!

Well, my holiday is just a dim and distant memory now, good as it was, and the days are already becoming autumnal as I write. I always have good intentions going forward into this part of the year … get my accounts done in good time, buy presents (and, of course, wrap them, hide them, forget where they are …) and, more to the point, send them off in good time, do all the autumnal things (Illuminations, Halloween, bonfire night, etc) in an unhurried, laid back, yummy-mummy sort of way … but it never happens despite my optimism and always ends up in a sort of mad, rolling stone type hurtling downwards towards you-know-what. And then it’s all over! Which is why, as there are only now two more issues of Local People before the end of the year - and my elves and I sleep in January - you should seriously think now, if you have anything festive to get out there, about how you are going to do it!! LPM can help as both our November and December/January issues will each go out directly through over 23,500 local doors and more besides. Just saying! We will always work around you and your budget, so don’t be shy - give us a ring, we can have a chat (no hard sell!) and see if we can help your business to achieve a bit of a boost. Some excellent editorial this issue, new advertisers and special offers, all sorts of goings-on in the community and bargains to be had! But be warned, not everything is in its usual place!!

Have a good month, Heather

flour and baking powder into a large bowl and add the sugar, butter and eggs. Beat with an electric mixer until the mixture is pale, smooth and creamy.

fold the orange rind and juice into one bowl and the blended cocoa powder into the other.

3. Spoon each mixture into separate greased and base-

lined 18cm square shallow cake tins and level the surface. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until the cakes are risen and just firm to the touch. Cool for 5 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

4. Trim the edges from each cake then cut each cake

into four even-sized strips. Using a little of the jam, sandwich 2 of the chocolate strips with 2 of the orange flavoured strips to create a chequered effect oblong cake.

5. Roll out half the marzipan on a surface dusted lightly

with icing sugar to an 18 x 30cm rectangle. Brush the top of the assembled cake with a little more jam and press onto the marzipan. Brush the remaining sides of the cake with jam and carefully wrap the marzipan all around the cake. Use your fingertips to crimp along the top edges of the cake. Repeat with the remaining cake strips and marzipan to make a second cake.

Local People … from the past!

Danika Lloyd, family historian, from local company Family History Helpers will be kindly giving us an insight over the next few issues about what life was really like for local people of the past.

Here’s an article that will certainly shock and amaze!! Taken from the ‘Stockport Advertiser’, dated October 1823. This is a photo of the original clipping from that year but we have reproduced the text below. What more can we say ….!! Extraordinary and Singular Procreation – There is now living in the neighbourhood of Bollington, Cheshire, a man of the name of John Jackson; the following particulars of whose history, together with that of his wife, were related by himself, and can be easily substantiated; - He relates, that he was married the first time in the year 1763, to one Betty Brown, by whom he had 12 children, six boys and six girls. In 15 weeks after her death, he married his present wife, who before their marriage was a widow, and had had five children, which were then all living; by her he had 22 children in 20 years and 46 weeks, the time and circumstances of whose birth were equally singular, and probably unprecedented. He hired a cow from a neighbour every year during that period (in which he had but two different cows), and in three or four weeks after the cows had calved, each time his wife was delivered of a child; but in the 21st year the cow had two calves at the same time, and his wife was then pregnant; the people in the neighbourhood began to predict that his wife also would have two children, which in about three or four weeks was realized in the birth of two boys. When he took them to church at Prestbury to be baptized, the Minister smiled (as he had had 32 children baptized there before) and said, “Well, John, have you another?” “Yes, two, Sir,” was the reply. “Well, what must they be called?” “Abraham and Isaac,” said John. When the children had been baptized and the ceremony was over, the Minister said, “Well, John, we should have another, and call it Jacob;” and, faithful, as in times past, in about twelve months afterwards, John’s wife blest him with another boy, which was called Jacob; so that he had 35 children baptized in Prestbury church, 23 of whom in the space of 22 years. – Stockport Advertiser

Tools Of The Trade by Pippa Greenwood

Autumn is well and truly here. There is plenty to do in the garden and if you want to make jobs as easy and speedy as possible, it is essential that you have the right equipment. Whether you are just out to buy a few new tools or are setting up a selection of equipment for the first time, it really does pay to choose the right things in the first place. What you choose is going to depend to an extent on how often you are likely to do any one job and on the size and type of garden you have. It really is worth buying as good a quality garden tool as possible. Poorly made and badly designed tools can work out a lot more expensive (and frustrating!) in the long run, so start with a few good ones and build up gradually. Try handling any gardening tools before you buy them, so that you can ensure that they are the right size and weight for you and that the handles are comfortable to

hold. If the tools do carry a guarantee then make sure that you keep the receipt and any relevant label from the tool itself or else it may well be difficult to prove precisely when you bought it. A good quality fork and spade are essential and they need to be sturdily built if they are to do jobs such as digging, turning over soil and so forth. The neck and head of the spade should be moulded from one piece of metal for added strength. The shaft is usually constructed from wood or metal and make sure that it is firmly attached at both the head end and the handle. Some traditionalstyle garden tools may have wooden handles but most now have D-shaped plastic handles. Choose forks and blades whose metal parts have been treated to prevent rust. A hand fork and trowel

are essential for smaller jobs such as weeding or gardening in confined spaces, and they are also great for moving and dividing smaller plants, for planting bulbs and for mixing up small amounts of compost. These are a tool where it is definitely worth feeling the handle to ensure that that the grip is comfortable. Most garden centres offer stainless steel or coated steel garden tools. Stainless steel does not rust and many people find they move through the soil better, but the price is usually considerably higher. Coated steel tools are much cheaper and provided you keep them clean and oil them at the end of each season and periodically throughout the year, they last well. A hoe is useful for weeding between small and established plants and for aerating the surface of the soil. Keep your Continued on Page 16 ...

hoe sharpened at regular intervals and it will last for ages and slide rapidly and easily through the soil. Most hoes have a 1.5 metre (5 foot) or longer shaft which is comfortable for most gardeners to use. However, if you are very tall, then longer ones may be available from some manufacturers. My favourite is the SpeedHoe, UK designed and with an unusual almost heartshaped head with a blade running around all edges and a pronged rear, making it the easiest and most effective hoe I’ve ever used. A spring-tined rake is really useful because it has thin flexible wire tines which

make it perfect for raking up lightweight debris and fallen leaves or, of course, lawnmower clippings. A garden rake can also be used to rake up leaves although the job is slightly harder, but its main use is to break up lumps of soil and help you to create a fine level area for sowing seed, whilst at the same time removing stones, lumps and other debris. You can then use the head of the rake to help level off the soil. If you plan to grow vegetables, then a small hoe known as an onion hoe is an invaluable tool and allows you to weed quickly and easily, even between fairly closely spaced crops.

You can also use it to weed in amongst ornamental plants of course. For really tight spaces and weeding between paving, and in gravel in asparagus beds etc, I’m addicted to my SpeedWeeder, a small redhandled tool l which is the best I have used for hoiking out dandelion roots in one piece too! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com and book Pippa for a gardening talk or peruse the really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including Nemaslug to control slugs, pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, pull-out EasyTunnels, biocontrols for vine weevils, leatherjackets and chafergrubs, signed books and lots more.

Home & Interiors Art Deco Style

DecaDent Deco

By Katherine Sorrell

The Roaring Twenties saw the jazz age in full swing from London to Berlin and Paris to Chicago. Just think flappers, slick automobiles, the talkies and skyscrapers: it was all about glamour, drama and modernity. Consumerism had arrived, and the timing was just right for a brand new style.

Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, an exhibition which aimed to modernise French interior design. As they moved into a new era, French designers were combining classical features and rare, luxury materials with exciting new influences such as contemporary art (Cubism and Fauvism), the exotic Ballets Russes and a fascination with all things Egyptian, as well as the art and artefacts of Japan, Africa, native America, Mexico and the Middle East. The result? An irresistible new style that perfectly expressed the excitement of the changing times.

Also known as Art Moderne, Jazz Moderne or simply Deco, Art Deco style was rooted in the world of pre-First World War leading French design, but only became widely recognised after the 1925 Paris

Early Art Deco furniture was exclusive and luxurious, made from costly materials such as hardwoods, lacquer, mother of pearl, shark skin, tortoiseshell and leather, and frequently featured extravagant

veneering and inlaid decoration. For collectors, then, this period is highly desirable and correspondingly expensive. However, as the style spread around Europe and became hugely popular across the Atlantic, designers gave the look a twist, employing the latest technologies and less expensive materials, such as stainless steel, chrome and Bakelite plastic. In the States it became known as Streamlining, and its curvy lines were the must-have look for a host of new buildings from Miami to New York – one of the finest examples being the 102storey Empire State Building, completed in 1931. In terms of furniture, the Art Deco look was low and upright in design, featuring geometric outlines with rounded corners, and often the shell, fan or sunburst shapes that are key to this style. Two completely new pieces had recently been invented: the coffee table and the cocktail cabinet, the latter something that has become inextricably associated with the style. Functional and spacesaving, fitted kitchens became increasingly widespread, while the Art Deco bathroom (still a relatively new room in most homes) featured solid yet elegant shapes and glamorous looks, with plenty of chrome and bevelled-edge mirror. To decorate walls, botanicals or geometrics were frequent motifs, while upmarket homes might have lacquer or wood panelling, mirror tiles or even Continued on Page 22 ...

trompe l’oeil murals. And this was the era of fabulous parquet flooring, perhaps with the addition of a zebra skin or a boldly abstract rug (today’s fashionable chevrons are a descendant). Soft furnishings were, in high-end interiors at least, sumptuous and costly, with silk and velvet (tasselled and fringed, of course) especially desirable. However, as the look filtered down it was cotton, chenille and moquette that gained in popularity, often featuring graphic patterns in bold colours or the monochrome of black, white and grey. Everything was bathed in a new form of artificial light – electricity – and the widespread use of new-fangled electric fittings meant that designers paid increasing attention to their appearance. Often strikingly dramatic, they were made from

ground-breaking materials such as aluminium, plywood, tubular steel, plastic or pressed glass; typical styles included pendant lights in the form of an inverted bowl made from marbled glass and hung from chains, ziggurat, shell or fan-shaped wall lights, and column-based table lamps boasting Art Deco motifs such as a sunray, borzoi dog or stylised naked figurines. And, since this was, essentially, a decorative style, the right accessories and ornaments were key, from Clarice Cliff’s ground-breaking ceramics to Bakelite radios, cocktail shakers and silver dressing table sets. As time went on, and Art Deco design was more widely disseminated, it became less sophisticated and more mass-produced. Those initial qualities of opulence and luxury

became, especially in 1930s Britain, more utilitarian and suburban. Though essentially still a ground-breaking style that bridged the old world and the new, it was commercialised to the point of kitsch. House builders employed features such as rounded bay windows, doorways with stepped surrounds and garden gates with sunrise motifs. The vocabulary of brightly coloured zigzags, chevrons, exotic animals and stylised flowers was added to furnishings, accessories and practically any type of homeware possible – and thus what had been a luxurious look available only to the few had become an everyday style that was found in all sorts of ordinary homes. What it’s like living without a mother. Most people can imagine what it’s like to live without a parent figure present in their lives but no one really knows what it’s like living daily life without their mum or dad, at a young age, because they have passed away. I was nearly 13 when it happened. My mum had lived with Crohn’s disease since she was 16 (Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease of the intestines, especially the colon and ileum, associated with ulcers and fistulae.). Crohn’s disease had fully taken over her life by the age of 18 to 20. At the age of 26 she gave birth to me and at 27 she gave birth to my sister Jaime. She had been told she wouldn’t be able to have children because of the Crohn’s but a few years later, along came me and Jaime. We were her little miracles. On Monday 9th February 2015, at 5.27pm, my mum passed away. I was broken without her. She had always been there and then the next minute she was gone. The idea that she was no longer with us anymore hurt more than anything else in the world. The first week was hell. I spent countless days and nights wondering how I was going to cope. Now I’m two years in and I wonder how I got this far without her. For me living without a mum is hard especially since I’m a girl. Living with just my dad can be hard and can get awkward at times for all of us, since my dad doesn’t really understand how to handle periods and girly stuff. Also, I feel like there are things I would have felt more comfortable saying to my mum rather than my dad. You also have to remember my dad is suffering his own loss of his partner so some days he can be different in the way he acts. He tries really hard. For me, I get really annoyed when people say they know what it’s like to live in this situation when in actual fact they have no idea at all. They think you are getting out of control or just way too emotional but they don’t understand how much of you is missing. The fact that the person who gave birth to you is gone hurts because you are a part of your mother; losing her is like losing an arm, or a leg, or worse losing you… I’m not going to say it’s easy because it really isn’t. Sure some days can be good and you can be the happiest person in the world and the next day you can be a mess and you don’t want to socialise or have any contact with anyone because you hurt so much and you don’t know how to handle it. So there are good days and bad days and my life will never be the same again but I will get through it.

Cat is 14 years old and is interested in football. 42

Local People …. talks Bullying at School & College Communication and Drama specialist Kalini Kent is also a Parent and Youth Coach and writes a bi-monthly piece for LPM about common issues we all face – family relationships, coping with stress, communicating more effectively, building confidence and resilience, and other problems LPM readers wish to be tackled. In this issue Kalini looks at different forms of bullying for young people, signs, symptoms and effects and gives practical suggestions to manage and support.

Bullying has distressing and damaging effects on a young person, with detrimental long-term impact which often lasts into adulthood. It is equally rife amongst adults; and workplace bullying and harassment is a huge topic in itself. This article will be focusing on children and young people, though many of the points apply to adults.

WHAT IS BULLYING?

Whilst there is no legal definition, it is usually a repeated pattern of intentional behaviour and can happen anywhere and at any time: e.g. at school, in sports teams, on the school bus or walking; and it can take many different forms: Physical: any contact or violence including pushing, kicking, hitting, pinching, biting; Verbal: criticism, taunts, teasing, name calling, rumours, threats, blackmailing; Emotional: making a person feel threatened, frightened, intimidated, or humiliated, or being excluded from social events, networks and playtime; Verbal Harassment: silent or abusive phone calls, offensive texts or emails; Possessions: stealing or damaging possessions, stealing money; Cyberbullying: any online bullying on social media - Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat – and includes shaming, posting degrading images and nasty profile comments. With the increase of social networking sites CB is on the increase, and unlike other forms of bullying, can happen 24/7 and go viral very quickly; Race, Religion, Physical Disability, Nationality or Sexual Orientation: this can be sinister, as it is picking on something that the victim is unable to change.

HOW DO YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD IS BEING BULLIED?

Often, children don’t tell their parents or carers they are being bullied because they don’t want to upset them, or for fear the bullying will get worse if the parent tries to do something about it. But research shows that knowing or suspecting your child is being bullied is one of the biggest concerns for parents. Some of the SIGNS OF BULLYING to look out for are: Coming home with physical injuries, unexplained bruises, with damaged or missing clothes or without money they should have, and asking for money (for the bully); Reluctance to go to school or being mysteriously “ill” in the morning; Unexpected changes like having trouble with homework for no apparent reason and poor academic achievement; Feeling unusually irritable, easily upset, particularly emotional, and upset generally; Being more withdrawn, uncommunicative and not participating in things;; Difficulty sleeping, nightmares, bed wetting or soiling cloths.

EFFECTS OF BULLYING

Whatever the age, persistent or daily bullying will have a definite effect on wellbeing as it will be chipping away at confidence and self-esteem. Often a young person might act as if they are ok on the outside but they can be feeling depressed, anxious, isolated, upset, humiliated, angry or frustrated. They can start believing the bullying and blame themselves, causing them to withdraw socially, have fewer friendships and become isolated, becoming wary and suspicious of others. 44 To advertise with us, just call 01625 265551

It can also affect their behaviour, especially if they bottle up their emotions, which could lead to showing aggressive tendencies including bullying others (just like the bully), or turning their anger inwards, becoming self-destructive - engaging in self-harm, developing eating disorders, turning to drinking or taking drugs, substance abuse, and in extreme cases feeling so low that they commit suicide.

HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD DEAL WITH BULLYING/ STRATEGIES TO ADOPT

LISTEN AND TALK: It is vitally important that the young person is encouraged to talk about the problem and that they have someone they trust to talk to who can give them emotional support. They should be encouraged to express their feelings: “I feel .... because.... They may be feeling scared or ashamed that they are being bullied, so it is important that they know that they don’t have to tackle the problem by themselves and they have people to turn to. BOOST THEIR CONFIDENCE: Help them realise that it is not their fault they are being bullied but it is to do with the bully’s personal issues. Find opportunities to build their confidence and self-esteem like helping them realise all the great qualities they have that makes them stand out from the crowd. Also show them that they are loved and valued and help them feel good about themselves. BUILD THEIR ARMY: Help the child surround themselves with people with similar interests and who care about them. If needs be, engage in new activities or clubs where friendships can be built and where they can be appreciated for who they are. IGNORE THE BULLY / FOGGING: However difficult, they should try to ignore it or appear confused by what is being said or done and walk away – often what the bully wants is a reaction so if there is none, hopefully they will get bored and stop. TRAVEL IN PACKS / SAFE PEOPLE: They should not get caught alone with the bully but stay close to friends or people where it is unlikely that they will be bullied. SAFE PLACES: Stay in places where they are safe and not alone or vulnerable TALK TO THEIR SCHOOL: Whether the bullying is taking place at school or not, make sure their school knows so that they can give support and try to prevent it.

WHAT IF YOUR CHILD IS THE BULLY?

It can be devastating for a parent to find that their child has been bullying and can lead to feelings of disappointment and anger. But it is important to stay calm and deal with it. It may be that the child may not realise that they are bullying or the impact of their actions. It is important to get them to understand how it would feel to be on the receiving end and why their actions need to change. Also, understanding WHY they are bullying would be good for parent and child, so as to stop it continuing, and to formulate a plan to change the pattern of behaviour.

Overcoming bullying can be a very hard thing to do but it is important to try, as many adults bear the scars of bullying from childhood. Nobody has the right to bully another but unfortunately it happens, so if you or someone you know needs help and support, please contact me. and Pictures

by Simon Brown of Travelling Simon Photography

A slightly different slant on our Words and Pictures feature this month. Many of you will know – or at least heard of – our ‘victim’, Antony Allen. A Macclesfield lad born and bred, he hit the headlines a couple of years ago when he spearheaded the campaign to set up and run a traditional youth club for the teenagers of the area. A very successful venture, it was only unfortunate that due to circumstances beyond Ant’s control, it had to close down. People still talk about it now as having been a great place, fulfilling an obvious need. The youth club idea was one of those that you might have a wistful chat about over a pint as being something that could be good - but then only a few will have the vision and the drive to actually bring such an idea to fruition with very little to start with other than enthusiasm and optimism, turning ‘could be’ into ‘can be’. So, Antony Allen has spent 20 years in media (everyone’s dream, obviously!!) drawing on his optimistic and sunny personality to work at selling ad space, PR, marketing communications and more recently, 10 years in online recruiting for a local company involved in jobs in the food manufacturing industry. When this reached a natural conclusion, not one to be deterred (and we all still have bills to pay!!), he took himself off to AZ on a temporary contract, working shifts in the production sector. In the back of his mind, however, there was still a nagging sense of unfulfillment, that something better was around the corner ….

Those of you who know Ant will know that he is a mod. I looked up the definition of a ‘mod’ and it (that is Google, the fount of all knowledge!) told me that it is, “a young person of a subculture characterized by a smart stylish appearance, the riding of motor scooters, and a liking for soul music.” I think this just about sums it up (I won’t be cruel as he is still a lot younger than me, so young is good!!). He has the scooter (still goes out on rides), he likes music and has, he told me, a ‘passion for fashion’. Indeed, just like the protagonist Jimmy in the iconic film ‘Quadrophenia’, Ant had always dreamt of owning a hand-made, bepoke suit. Call it fate, but as he was mulling over his next move in life, an opportunity presented itself which was ‘bespoke’ for Antony and one BESPOKE TAILORING FOR ALL IN CHESHIRE which he just had to Call Antony on 07804 027398 or email embrace!

Antony has just launched his new venture as the local Fit Expert for “A Suit that Fits”. He is now a qualified, travelling tailor and talked to me very enthusiastically about the whole process which will result in a fully bespoke garment for around the same price as you might find on the high street for a similar suit. In other words, a suit which fits you – and no one else – as perfectly as possible from around £399! But not only suits, Antony can also fit you for an overcoat, shirts, waistcoats, trousers and not only the chaps, but also the ladies! He can offer over 400 different fabrics from your traditional tweeds and worsteds right through to linen, silk and sharkskin! Once you have your main material sorted, there are a whole host of different upgrades – collars, lapels, vents, piping! You can even have a photograph screen printed on your jacket lining – a bit wacky but quite individual for a wedding or special occasion! The aim is to get as perfect a fit as possible so the process takes around 6 – 8 weeks, starting with a visit to you to take all measurements according to a tried and tested algorithm and consult about the fabric and style. The garments themselves are made in Nepal in a completely ethical set up. The workshop there is owned by A Suit That Fits and the local Master Tailor has over 35 years experience. All the individual tailors are paid a 50% higher rate than the local norm and on top of that, the company contributes 5% of its profit into the local education system, so beneficial all round. Once the garments are returned, Ant will make a second visit to ensure that everything is completely satisfactory, with any final alterations being made at the workshop in London. His enthusiasm for and happiness about his new venture was plain to see and I think this is really the ‘moral’ of this feature – regardless of your age, if you put your mind to it, you can see a dream through to fulfilment, even if it doesn’t happen straight away and you have to go off on some tangents along the way! Thank you – and good luck – to Antony Allen … watch out Saville Row! www.facebook.com/ASTFcheshire Please mention this magazine when responding to advertisements!

October 2016

Jobling Gowler has once again been recommended nationally for the quality of the advice it gives to its clients.

Making a Lasting Power of Attorney in Time

(Or shutting the stable door before the horse has bolted)

A common phone call that we receive is one that asks us if we can help “get Power of Attorney for mum or dad as they’ve gone into care”. It is a common misconception that someone can ‘get’ Power of Attorney. It is not something that anyone acquires. Rather, it is something that is given away. The Legal 500 assesses the strengths of law firms based on the feedback of clients and other leading professionals. Following this detailed appraisal Jobling Gowler has been ranked as one of the leading firms in the country. You can be reassured that the advice that we provide is of the highest quality.

50

There are essentially two ways in which someone is given legal authority to look after someone else’s affairs. The route chosen depends entirely on whether or not the person in question (the person whose affairs need to be looked after) has the mental capacity to make their own choices and decisions; whether or not they are able to make an informed choice to make a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) and appoint an attorney themselves. Making an LPA is definitely the easier and cheapest option for all concerned. It is something someone creates in anticipation of losing the ability to look after their own affairs at a later date. The problems arise when a person has already started to deteriorate mentally. It is then a question of whether they have the mental capacity to still make an LPA.

To advertise with us, just call 01625 265551

To have the required capacity a person, at the very least, would have to be able to tell us, unprompted, that they wanted to make a LPA, demonstrate that they understood what one was and be able to tell us who they wanted to be their attorneys. If someone is not able to do this we are then left with making an application to the Court of Protection to appoint (usually) the family member who called us in the first instance, as a deputy for that person. A deputy, to all intents and purposes, is a supervised attorney. How difficult a deputyship is to obtain has been exaggerated somewhat by horror stories in certain newspapers but the reality is that it is definitely a more difficult, time consuming and costly way to ultimately look after someone’s affairs. Therefore, if you do have an opinion on who you would want to look after your affairs, in the event that you are not able to do so yourself, then you should speak to us about making a LPA as soon as possible. Provided you are over 18 years old it is never too early to make one, and you can rest safe in the knowledge that you have secured the stable door before the metaphorical horse has bolted! If you would like to discuss this further, or would like to find out about our complimentary attorney workshops which provide valuable training on the responsibilities of an attorney, then please contact Tessa Whiskard or Simon Heapy on 01625 614250 or via e-mail at enquiries@jobling-gowler.co.uk. We look forward to hearing from you.

Your Local Legal Experts Tessa Whiskard & Simon Heapy are both experienced specialist solicitors, recommended for the quality of the advice they provide. By instructing a solicitor at Jobling Gowler, our clients can be assured of getting qualified, experienced and specialist advice of the highest quality.

Finance

What Benefits And Concessions Are You Entitled To In Later Life? element, Savings Credit, is for people who have saved a small amount towards their retirement.

As you grow older, you become entitled to certain age-related public benefits and concessions that can help with day-to-day living. The most obvious is the state retirement pension, but what are the other less well-known top-ups and concessions that might be available? Although pension credit is a well-established benefit, not everyone realises they are eligible to claim it, so it’s worth checking whether you’re missing out on this valuable supplement to your state pension. Additionally, there may be local authority concessions available in the area where you live - for adult education or fitness classes, for example. Here are some of the benefits that you might be missing out on, plus a brief guide as to the current eligibility criteria. Pension credit There are two elements to pension credit – Guarantee Credit which guarantees a minimum income of £155.60 if you’re single, and £237.55 for couples. The second

Single people and couples could receive up to £13.07 and £14.75 of Savings Credit per week respectively. You may be entitled to one or both elements if you’ve reached state pension age, and are on a low income. AttendAnce AllowAnce Attendance Allowance is a benefit available to people aged 65 or older, who have care needs at home. You don’t have to receive professional care to be eligible for this benefit, and it’s often the case that a careprovider is a spouse or family member. There are two different rates available, depending on the level of care needed: • Lower rate: £55.10 per week. • Higher rate: £82.30 per week. People who claim the lower rate often need help with washing and dressing, and the higher rate reflects greater care needs during the day and night. cArer’s AllowAnce If you care for someone for 35 hours a week or more, and they are in receipt of certain benefits, you could get Carer’s Allowance at a weekly rate of £62.10. If you’re eligible, you will also automatically receive National Insurance credits. It’s worth noting that Carer’s Allowance can affect other benefits that you and the person you are caring for

receive, so you should factor in the possibility that these may reduce or be taken away. winter fuel AllowAnce You can receive between £100 and £300 from the government to help with your winter heating bills. To qualify for the winter payment this year, you need to have been born before 5th May 1953. Once you’ve claimed, you should receive the payment automatically between November and December in future years. cold weAther PAyment If you’re in receipt of pension credit, you could also be eligible for a cold weather payment if the average temperature where you live falls, or is expected to fall, to 0°C. This must be for seven consecutive days between 1st November and 31st March, and the payment is £25 for each such period. AnnuAl flu VAccinAtions The annual flu vaccination is free for anyone over the age of 65 years old. It is available in pharmacies as well as from your GP, and is usually provided between September and February each year. tV licence You can apply for a free TV licence if you are aged 75 and over. The government also offers concessions to older people in residential care, and the cost for a licence in these circumstances is £7.50.

Public trAnsPort free bus pass There are various concessions available for older people using public transport. Both men and women are entitled to a bus pass at the female state pension age, giving free offpeak travel on local buses. london 60+ oyster card People over the age of 60 living in London, can apply for the 60+ London Oyster photo card, and enjoy free travel on London buses, tubes, and a range of other types of local transport. senior railcard and coachcard The senior railcard allows people aged 60 and over to save money on rail fares in the UK. There is a one-off cost to buy the card, and it is available online. The senior coachcard currently costs £10 plus £2 p&p, and will save you a third

off standard fares in the UK if you are over 60.

and evening classes for retired people of state pension age and older.

PrescriPtions Those aged over 60 are also entitled to free prescriptions and NHS sight tests. You will need to complete the back of your prescription and let the pharmacist know that you’re eligible – you may also need to provide proof of age in this respect.

The government website (www. gov.uk) is a good resource for finding out more about these benefits, and you may be able to make a claim for them online. https://www.gov.uk/pensioncredit https://www.gov.uk/attendanceallowance https://www.gov.uk/carersallowance https://www.gov.uk/winter-fuelpayment/overview https://www.gov.uk/coldweather-payment https://www.gov.uk/freediscount-tv-licence https://www.gov.uk/apply-forelderly-person-bus-pass http://www.nationalexpress. com/offers/coachcards/seniorcoachcard.aspx

locAl Authority fAcilities Some local authorities provide free or discounted access for older people to their leisure and educational facilities. You may find that your local sports and leisure centre offers concessions to people over state pension age, for fitness classes and swim sessions. Additionally, some colleges provide discounts on daytime

Meet our Presenters!

Continuing our series on the good folk who give up their time to produce and present the wide variety of programming that is loved by listeners of Canalside’s the Thread 102.8FM, this month, we tell you a bit more about Trish Napier …. Trish has been with Canalside for 6 years now and presents The Reggae Show which goes out every Thursday evening at 8 pm and again on Saturday evenings at midnight. She’s 66 years old, originally from London and moved to Macclesfield 20 years ago. With three married children and six grandchildren who all live up here in the area - besides her tasks at Canalside, she is kept very busy!! She told us, “after coming through a serious illness, I needed to do something with myself so I started volunteering at Canalside. I hasten to add that I had never had any previous Radio experience! My first job was to research the ‘What's On’ listings but since then, with the help of Nick, Mark and Brian, my confidence has grown and I've learned lots of new skills. I feel privileged to be part of such a great community project with such a friendly and experienced team.” Please note that the advertisements on these two pages are selected and provided to us by Canalside’s The Thread and as such, any queries arising from such should be addressed to Canalside direct via the contact details supplied on previous Page 59. 61 Please mention this magazine when responding to advertisements!

So, why advertise in Local People Macclesfield? Our own team delivers every issue (10 of these each year!) DIRECTLY THROUGH the doors of around 23,500 homes and businesses, covering most of Macclesfield, Tytherington and the surrounding villages of Rainow, Sutton, Langley, Gawsworth, Henbury and now Prestbury too! We believe this to be the largest but most concentrated distribution of its kind in the area. Additional copies are left at collection points in Chelford village plus Macclesfield library, Visitor Information Centre and train station. We are currently also incorporating our other magazine, Compass Wilmslow, into Local People on an interim basis and thus leaving even more copies at collection points only in Alderley Edge, Wilmslow and Bollington bi-monthly at no extra charge! We don’t do hard sell, we’re very easy to deal with, we will never, ever classify people according to letters of the alphabet, we work with you to get the best for your business, we can do simple artwork for you and don’t generally charge, we know the area well, we’ve been doing this for over 10 years now with over 100 issues under our belts, there is a good value price to suit every business, what you see is what you get and it works!! Phew!
