A warm welcome to this, the penultimate issue of 2017 … where has it gone?!

Tree of Light On Thursday 7th December from 5.30pm to 6.30pm, people are invited to gather around the Market Place Christmas Tree in memory of loved ones, to sing carols and reflect on their memories at what can be a challenging time of year.

Helena Gowler, Community Engagement Officer for Macclesfield Town Council said ‘We have decided to move the event from the Crematorium to the Market Place. The Christmas Tree in Town is a focal point for the festivities so holding carols around the tree in memory of loved ones will give it an extra special meaning this year. Leading up to the event, people are invited to write a message on a star which will be hung on the tree. Stars can be collected from the Visitor Information Centre, the United Reformed Church, Park Green, St Michael’s Church and Macclesfield Cemetery Office. They must be returned to one of these hubs by Friday 10th November so that they can be prepared and hung on the tree.

Please come along to the event on the 7th December to see all of the memory stars on the tree, to join in with the carols led by All Hallows Catholic College, and reflect in memory of someone special. St Michaels Church will be open for an hour after the event for anyone seeking some quiet time.

Local History

by John Langdill of Macclesfield Historical Society (see our Community Noticeboard on Page 40 for details of their regular meetings) and volunteer at Macclesfield Museum A number of years ago I was involved in a research project about Byrons Lane, which runs from the start of London Road to Gurnet. One of the houses I investigated was The Elms, which is about half way along the Lane on the south side. I found out that The Elms was built in the late 1830s for a man called Charles Wood, who I had never heard of before but who, it seemed, was a cotton manufacturer. I started to try to find something out about Charles and was able to make contact with Eric Wood, one of his descendants. Eric had researched his family's history and had contacted the Macclesfield Historical Society for help in the 1970s. He lived in Worcester but had visited Macclesfield at that time and corresponded with the secretary of the Society.

For about the last 150 years Macclesfield residents would have been most likely to have heard of the Wood family through the name of Wood's Cut, which ran from near Gurnet, over to London Road opposite the football ground and then across the road, past St. Edward's Church and along the back of High Street to finish at Wood's Pool, on the edge of South Park. The Pool, which was filled in and had houses built on the site in the 1990s, was originally a reservoir supplying the Wood's cotton mills, which were built around 1810 and sited between Old Mill Lane and Gunco Lane. Most of The Cut has also disappeared now, but some short stretches are still visible.

The Wood family should be better known locally. They were one of the most important families in Macclesfield in the first half of the 19th century. Two of them were mayors, they were linked by marriage to the Ryle and Roe families and the Woods and their cotton business were also linked to the failure of Daintry and Ryles Bank in 1841, which caused shock waves through the town.

Eric Wood had produced a family tree which took his ancestors back to Samuel Wood who was a dealer in silk and mohair, married in Macclesfield in 1699 and was Macclesfield churchwarden in 1700. Before Samuel there had been an Edward Wodde or Woode who was an alderman and may have operated Macclesfield manorial corn mill. He had links with the Savage family of Rocksavage House near Runcorn around 1600. The Savages were one of the most important local families throughout the 16th century. Thomas Savage had been Archbishop of York around 1500AD and had built the Savage Chapel onto Macclesfield Parish Church around 1504.

Another Edward Wood had been Mayor of Macclesfield in the 1670s, but Eric was unable to establish a link between these earlier Woods and Samuel. This may have been because during the period of The Commonwealth, in the later 1640s and 1650s, parish records generally ceased to be kept, so it is often difficult to bridge this period when tracing your ancestry.

Pain in your foot? Is it plantarfasciitis?

by Simon Hogan & Ross Mitchell Have you got pain in your foot? You could have plantar fasciitis, plantar fascia pain or plantar fasciopathy. What do all those things actually mean? And why just stretching is not going to help your plantar fascia pain go away?

What is the plantar fascia?

The plantar fascia is a soft tissue structure most similar to tendons. It runs from the under part of your heel bone (calcaneum) and then fans out to attach to the base of each of your toes. It comes under load when we are on our feet and helps us to walk normally.

Unfortunately it can sometimes cause pain and there are various terms to describe the different states of the tissue.

Plantar fasciitis

This, in it’s truest sense, is an acute (less than 6 weeks) inflammatory reaction of the tissue in response to being suddenly overloaded - lots of walking, jumping, running, being on your feet beyond what you’d normally do. If this is what you have got, back off from being on your feet as much, rest up for a couple of days or weeks, and then as your pain settles gradually get going again. Job done!

Now most people unfortunately don’t have this presentation, they just describe a gradual onset of symptoms over time. This is typically not inflammatory therefore not an ‘itis’ (meaning ‘inflammation of’).

Plantar fasciopathy

It sounds terrible but plantar fasciopathy is a term to describe the tissue when it is in a degenerative state. It is similar in it’s features to how long standing tendon problems present, where changes in the tissue called collagen (the stuff it’s made up of) can happen where it breaks down, can calcify and nerve or blood supply can grow in. Degenerative categorically does not mean it will snap or

that all hope is lost, it just means that the tissue is not in great shape. But the wonderful thing about our bodies is we can change and adapt!

There are often fasciopathy:

Pain dominant phase

Painful and stiff first thing in the morning, painful on start up from sitting, walking longer distances or standing too long. The aim in this phase is to reduce the load, so get off your feet in a similar way to a true plantar faci ‘itis’.

Load dominant phase

Basically overall it’s better (less painful) unless you overdo it. So what now? Simple, load it.

Gradually and progressively get the tissue stronger to make it more resilient and tough.

Some people may benefit from losing weight if it's indicated, often you may be tight in your calves, but stretching alone will not resolve the problem. Sometimes people are stiff into toe extension although the jury is out in terms of the research on this one. Ultimately if it’s tight stretch it, it will do no harm.

There has been found to be some association with reduced toe flexor and evertor muscle strength, and tight hamstrings. Again it will cause you no harm to get stronger in your foot and looser in your hamstrings. Often footwear with a hard insole can make things painful so if it helps a soft insole or trainers can help.

Runners are a group that sometimes get this problem. It can be due to an increased pace, or alteration in your footwear or strike pattern.

Initially follow the general advice above.

Cake and Bake A Traditional Christmas Pudding

All ready for Stir Up Sunday at the end of November … see what that's all about on the next page!

Ingredients

Preparation: 20 minutes Cook: 8 hours

In a mixing bowl, combine the suet, flour, breadcrumbs, sugar, fuit and spices and mix well. In a separate bowl combine the eggs, brandy, stout and black treacle and mix well. Add the liquid to the dry ingredients and stir. Cover the bowl with a plate and leave in the fridge overnight.

The next day, grease a 1L pudding basin and add the pudding mixture. Cover with two sheets of pleated baking parchment then cover with a sheet of tin foil and secure around the rim of the basin with kitchen string.

3.

Place on a trivet inside a large pan over a medium heat then pour in enough water to come half way up the side of the pudding basin. Cover, then simmer for 8 hours, topping up the water when necessary. Remove from the pan and serve or store.

110g shredded suet 55g self raising flour, sifted 120g white breadcrumbs 265g demerara sugar 140g sultanas 140g raisins 140g currants zest and juice of 1 orange zest and juice of 1 lemon 160g glace cherries 1 teaspoon mixed spice 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 eggs, beaten 150ml brandy 70ml stout 1 tablespoon black treacle

Serves 6

TIPS Always warn your family or guests if you have added any charms or a sixpences to the pudding.

To store and reheat, re-wrap in clean baking parchment and a muslin cloth. The pudding can be stored for several months. To reheat, steam in the same way as Step 3 for 3 hours. The pudding can also be steamed for the first time in a slow cooker for 8 hours.

Local People - A Teenage Perspective ……

A small group of students from various year groups at Macclesfield Academy meets regularly to discuss ideas, work together and support each other as writers. The articles they write for us look at life from a sometimes refreshingly alternative perspective!

This issue's article is by a student with a passion and a bit of an appeal ….

The Leap to Success I’m Meggie Bradley from the Macclesfield Academy and I’ve been a gymnast since I was five.

Recently, I started coaching recreational gymnasts at my club once a week. I train at the Macclesfield School of Gymnastics and have always done so, despite the fact that we can’t practise as much as gymnasts from other clubs. Why? Simply because we train in the leisure centre and the sports hall is often being used.

This puts us at a severe disadvantage against other clubs as they practise for 20 hours a week, as opposed to 8, like we do. However, we still come out of competitions with medals and rosettes and some of our gymnasts partake and pass in the prestigious NDP Grades.

As well as the lack of training time, we can’t get the specialist equipment required to progress and learn harder skills as equipment has to be quickly put away at the end of each session.

We have to find alternatives to useful and common pieces of equipment like spring floors and foam pits, and the alternatives don’t work as well, thus taking longer to learn skills, putting us at even more of a disadvantage to other clubs.

So why do we train there? Surely it would make more sense to just move to another club?

We train there because it’s like a family. We train there because it’s home.

Even if we’re never going to become elite, even if we can’t learn skills as easily, even if we’re at a disadvantage. I’m there because I love it. And I know everyone else there does too.

We compete and show the world that yes, we can keep up with other gymnasts with over double the training time that we have. That yes, we can continue learning to leap higher and tumble faster. That yes, we can fly.

When we’re training, there’s so much encouragement and support for others. If someone can’t get a skill, or has a mental block, they’ll be given tips and drills to help with it - from not just the coaches, but from other gymnasts. When someone gets a skill, the whole gym will clap and cheer. Everyone knows parts of everyone else’s floor routines, everyone will dance when the music’s on.

There’s gymnasts that train and coach, like me. I coach the beginners classes on Tuesdays, and the girls are all so excited even doing simple skills like forwards rolls, and it reminds me of when I started, almost ten years ago. They come back each week wanting to learn all the skills at once, wanting to get all of their badges. Their journey is just beginning.

It doesn’t matter what level you are, or what gym you go to. A skill considered basic is something that the average person could only dream of doing. Our warm up is features skills that are unthinkable to most.

I’m proud to be a Macclesfield gymnast. We need you to be proud of us and someone to help us.

65 years young Many mature adults are finding themselves in a situation where they are asset rich and cash poor; the wealth they have accumulated over the years may be reflected in the spiraling value of their home, but not necessarily in their monthly income. This can be a frustrating situation for the millions of over 65s that wish to make the most of the opportunities that retirement brings.

One option is to sell and downsize the home, however this can be costly and emotionally very difficult. Mortgages in retirement are therefore becoming more popular. This can be done through a traditional method or through a lifetime mortgage.

Lifetime Mortgages Lifetime mortgages typically allow the borrower to make no repayments of either interest or capital whilst they are alive – these mortgages are known as interest roll-up. Whilst this avoids the need to budget for monthly payments, debt can quickly grow as unpaid interest is added to the loan. These mortgages normally have a ‘no-negative equity’ guarantee and the borrower cannot be repossessed whilst living in the home. The interest rates and fees can be relatively high in order to pay for these guarantees. The loan amount and the interest that has accrued is paid back when the borrower dies or moves home.

Traditional mortgages This option could suit a borrower with guaranteed pension income however, due to most mainstream lenders having inflexible upper age limits, it can be difficult to borrow money on a traditional mortgage in retirement. The flexible approach offered by smaller building societies such as the Vernon is most likely to cater for this type of borrower. As well as capital and interest repayment loans, it is possible to get a mortgage where only the interest is repaid each month with the capital being repaid from the sale of the property on death or downsizing. As with all traditional mortgages the home can be repossessed if payments are not kept up.

Treehouse Project Treehouse Food Kitchen is a service provided to the homeless, socially isolated, and those in financial difficulty based in Macclesfield. Established over 3 years ago, Treehouse provides a hot meal, drinks, sleeping bags, bedding, toiletries, underwear, socks, clothing, a non-judgemental listening ear, and referrals or information of other services.

Tree house has the support of many churches, businesses and individuals in the local area. They are a non-profit organisation run by volunteers who tirelessly give up their time to help all that attend.

"Donkeys in the Furniture"

Our invitation series looks at businesses that have been around in Macclesfield for a long, long time - which perhaps we take a little for granted!

Part of the furniture for donkeys years ‌..

This issue, we talked to David Dooley from Dooleys Hi-Fi and Audio Visual on Mill Street To start off our conversation, David took me through the timeline of events which culminated in their 33 and ongoing years at 106 Mill Street but cleverly, simultaneously tied this in to the developments in technology, which over the years in the business have been momentous and huge and probably at the time David's father Philip started the business, unimaginable!

After leaving military service in the RAF, Philip was working as a TV engineer and supplying and repairing sets from his parents' farm in Gawsworth. The enterprise proved so successful that around 1960, he took on premises in Mill Lane and Dooleys Hi-Fi and Audio Visual really took off!

Obviously during the Mill Lane era, TVs were still black and white but the move to the Mill Street premises in 1984 coincided with the advent of colour television and indeed, the business expanded during the 1980s boom year, partly through offering televisions on rental as this was the way it was done to the greater part back then. It proved to be a good move and the business grew.

In the 1970s, video recorders entered the market, balanced by the introduction of music centres on the audio side. The arrival of CDs and the demise of vinyl records, coupled with the introduction of DVD players, meant massive change and developments on the audio side of the shop in the 1990s, until around 2000 when the next significant shift came when flat panel TVs began pushing the big and bulky CRT TVs into the history books of technology.

Indeed, 'flat panel' heralded the digital revolution of 2009. With each wave of new technology, Dooleys rose to the challenge and this has sustained them against the economic background which has often been challenging in recent years, as we all know.

David himself took over the business officially once his father stepped back due to illness.

However, having helped out in both shops since being a young

teenager, he had absorbed the industry without even thinking about it and his knowledge has grown alongside the technology.

We finally went on to talk about what Dooleys offer now and what sets them apart from the big stores ‌.

David explained that television and all related aspects still play an important part in the business. TV chip technology makes year on year advancements and although TVs work off the same signal, more and more can be done with that signal due to the electronics actually inside the TV set. Increasingly, more is being done in terms of streaming and linking with the internet and David told me that this is the direction in which TV is taking us. He can see the eventual demise altogether of the arial with the advent of 4K technology, for example, which gives a much higher quality and detailed picture which is only achievable via broadband. Indeed, on looking at an example which they have on the wall in the shop, it is noticeably different and quite awe inspiring.

On the audio and hi-fi side, they excel in equipment which gives performance and quality.

David explained that they cater for all price brackets, although their entry level equipment, whilst still very affordable, is probably a stage up from the entry level equipment elsewhere. They cater mainly for the dedicated audio and hi-fi customer. With the renewed interest in black vinyl, they also do a steady trade in servicing old turntables (mine would be a challenge!!) and regard the renovation of a once-decent turntable as a "project"!! The sky is the limit - the difference is the knowledge, the experience and the time taken to get the customer experience perfect.

This even includes sometimes demonstrating in situ in a prospective customer's home to suit the equipment to the exact environment. Finally, they stock a good range of support products, from DAB radios, to headphones to styli (is that the plural of stylus?!). Thanks, David!

Research shows that more than 50% of under 25’s will, at some point, experience bullying. As a result, 1 in 3 will self-harm, grades will drop and 37% will experience social anxiety and depression. In some cases, as with the tragic case of Felix Alexander, they take their own life. Bullying is a national emergency and continues to undermine the self-esteem, health and potential of millions in the UK. Anti-Bullying Week is an annual national event co-ordinated by the Anti-Bullying Alliance (www.anti-bullyingalliance.org) which this year takes place from the 13th to 17th November. Each year there is a different theme and this year the theme has been announced by the Anti-Bullying Alliance as promoting difference and equality in schools with the tag-line,

‘All Different, All Equal’.

The theme is based on a survey taken by nearly 600 young people who shared that they wanted the annual week of awareness to tackle bullying based on perceived differences: to focus on celebrating what makes us all unique. Being able to express yourself should be every child’s right, free from fear of bullying or ridicule, and yet many children struggle to find that acceptance. The aim of the week is therefore to encourage people to speak up about bullying, take action and build safer environments for pupils.

We are pleased that Rob Heys, General Manager of MTFC, has taken time out from his busy schedule to write a few words for Local People ….

We’re top of the league! Well we are at the time of writing, and hopefully will be at the time you are reading this too. Either way, it has been a great start to the season.

Obviously it is important we keep our feet on the ground, still early days, taking it one game at a time, and all those other clichés.

However, while we are all well aware that there is a long way to go, it is important to take a little time out to celebrate our successes along the way, and finding ourselves topping the table with just under a third of the season completed is certainly worth shouting about.

Also worth shouting about (seamless link there!) is our nomination for Best Club Marketing, Sponsorship and Engagement in the North West Football Awards. Our 'We’re Going' campaign ahead of our FA Trophy Final appearance undoubtedly had a big impact on the number of Silkmen at Wembley, and really did see the

whole town get behind the club.

We owe a huge thank you to Big Brand Ideas and Spiral Print for their help with coming up with the idea, and helping us to deliver it, and to the likes of Nick Bianchi for really getting behind what we were looking to achieve. Once again, well done to all who worked so hard to make it happen.

Our position at the top of the table – did I mention that – is fantastic, but equally as exciting is the amount of great work going on behind the scenes too.

In particular, our suite has never looked so good, with a range of new products available, including a fantastic wine list.

We have a new Events and Hospitality Manager, Elli Denton, who is busy taking bookings and arranging christenings, weddings, and birthday parties, as well as developing our conferencing business during the week.

We also have our new head chef, Alex Thomson, who prepares all the food that we produce from fresh ingredients in our on site kitchen.

Finally, a mention for our Youth Engagement Officer, Marty Irvine, who is working hard in and around Macclesfield to promote the club to the young people of the area. Our website has lots more details about the work that he is on with, everything from school holiday activities to regular Friday night training sessions.

So who did invent Duct Tape?

Vesta Stoudt, of course!

In the 1940s Vesta, who had two sons in the Navy, went to work in a US ammunition factory in Illinois. Her job was to inspect and pack cartridges used to launch the rifle grenades used by soldiers. The cartridges were packed eleven to a box, and the boxes were taped and waxed to make them waterproof and damp-proof. The box flaps were sealed with thin paper tape, and a tab of tape was left loose so that it could be pulled to release the waterproof wax coating and open the box. But the thin paper tape wasn’t strong enough, so the tabs frequently tore off when soldiers pulled on them. This left them frantically scrambling to claw the boxes open while under enemy fire, which put lives at risk, including those of Vesta's sons.

So Vesta came up with a solution: seal the boxes with a strong, cloth-based waterproof tape instead of thin paper tape. She raised

the issue with her supervisors but, as is often the way with such things, nothing was actually implemented.

So Vesta took matters into her own hands and wrote directly to President Roosevelt, outlining the problem and explaining her idea. She appealed to the fact he was a father himself.

Roosevelt sent Vesta’s letter to the War Production Board in Washington, D.C., and a few weeks later in March, she received a series of replies culminating with one which told her that the recommendation for the new tape had been approved and was “...of exceptional merit.”

The War Production Board asked Johnson & Johnson to make the new tape. It was originally called 'Duck Tape' because of the fact it was waterproof and made with a heavy woven type of fabric called cotton duck. Vesta Stoudt received a letter from President Roosevelt and earned the Chicago Tribune’s War Worker Award for her idea and her persistence.
